threats to national parks

Let's get one thing straight:

Badlands National Park is not in defiance of the president, they are in support of the American People. They don’t work for him, they work for US. Climate change is a direct threat to our national resources, and the most severe threat facing our parks today. This is not a political issue, this is not Democrats vs. Republicans, this is data-backed endangerment of our open spaces and federal lands. If a building is deemed structurally unsound, you fix it, you don’t claim that scientists are lying to you about serious fatigue in the load-bearing members, or else it comes crashing down around you. Climate change is no different, nobody has ever tried to claim that forest fires are a myth invented by the Chinese.

The fact that the National Park Service had to tweet from an alternate twitter account to avoid censorship shows that the Trump administration is not only lying about climate change, but that they are afraid of the truth. The National Park service educates people about nature, including threats to the environment and the complex ecosystems that make up our planet. Climate change, according to the NPS, is the greatest threat to the parks system. The fact that Trump expects them and the EPA to ignore the greatest threat to not only the parks system, but humanity as well in the next thousand years is appalling. If your platform relies on miseducation and lies to be taken seriously, then you honestly don’t have much of a platform at all.

Dear President Obama,

You are not a climate change champion if you go to Alaska and give a climate change speech on one day and then on the next day OK drilling in the Arctic. You are not being honest if you say that climate change is our greatest threat while at the same time opening our national parks to hydrofracking. I know I can speak for a lot of folks that actually voted for you and believed the words you have said when I say to you [that] you cannot have it both ways. Respectfully, you cannot continue to make America the number-one producer of fossil fuels and say that you are doing something to battle climate change. You may say that you are doing the best you can. But that simply isn’t good enough. We have seen to what lengths you will go to get behind something you really believe is worthy, like the Iran nuclear deal or the TPP; you fight tooth and nail to make those things happen.

I guess what I am asking you to do today as the leader of this great nation is really take it to the mat for my kids and yours and all the beautiful children in the world who are looking up to you and counting on you to do the right thing.

I know it may sound audacious to you and that my hopes are very high, but if you approached this problem like other presidents approached wars they wanted to fight, then I would say there was a heck of a lot more that you could be doing. I would say that you could even take it as far as beginning to enact a gradual elimination of all fossil fuel extraction in the USA and make a strong push for it globally. A global drawdown of what all of science is nearly unanimous about, which is keeping that carbon in the ground.

Sincerely and respectfully yours,
My children’s generation.

This is my first ever trip to Yellowstone National Park. Several times on this journey, I’ve found myself walking away from wild animals as they approach too close for comfort. last week, this bull elk sauntered out of the woods and began casually walking down the middle of the highway, causing somewhat of a frenzied tourist traffic jam. Established in 1872, Yellowstone is considered the world’s first national park. Many generations of animals have now thrived within park boundaries without experiencing humans as a serious threat.
