Fairytales. I love them. I love them to the core. Now I’ve always been interested in mythologies, whether they are Nordic, Greek, Japanese or freaking American Indian, but fairytales fascinate me a thousand times more. And considering how much I love mythology… that’s pretty gigantic - Castellaffron

VIETNAM. Ho Chi Minh City. 1996. Cholon district shortly after sunrise, thousands of geese and ducks are brought to the street market near the Cha Tam Catholic Church. All are sold within the hour.

I can promise you this—it’s all about attention. If you pay attention to things other people ignore, if you just be there and look, at times you will see and experience things no one else does. This morning I walked half a block down to the alley while everyone else was in their houses, probably asleep, and as the sun colored the clouds, a huge flock of snow geese flew right over me and all across the sky for a long time. I stopped taking pictures and just stood there in awe as thousands and thousands of geese passed by.

Then later when I took a short walk down to Black Rock woods to look for wildflowers and listen for phoebes (none yet), in a quiet moment I heard a rustle to my left, and not fifteen feet from me I saw a small bird of prey (sharpshin?) fly at a log, reach under with its talons and come out with with what may have been a chipmunk. Then I watched it fly low over the forest floor with its prize until it disappeared. It all happened in less than two seconds. If I’d fumbled for my camera, I’d have missed it. It was so close to me, then gone. I just stood there saying thank you in my heart.

Sure, often on walks I don’t see anything like that, but these wonders happen often enough that I would never give it up, or even take a dog, at least not every time, because then wildlife makes itself scarce. Even with a friend, it usually only happens if we’re both quiet.

So I want to encourage some of you: just be out there. Take pictures, look, walk. You’ll see things. Probably some people won’t believe you when you tell them, but you’ll know. It’s between you and the world. <3
