Like everyone else I am absolutely in love with this scene and all the weight it carries. Tons of amazing, poetic meta has been written about this. Keith’s soft look, full of love and also a calm acceptance and determination. Wanting Shiro to be the last thing he sees as he lets the light engulf them, never letting go. At this point, he thinks everyone else is dead. They are alone in the universe, and Keith still chooses Shiro and chooses for them to be together. This is a scene that will haunt me forever, in the best way.
But my actual favourite thing about this, is what comes after and how it transitions into the next episode. As Keith closes his eyes he thinks back on Shiro one last time. Specifically, he thinks back on Shiro’s promise, and Shiro’s plea.
Shiro promises he’ll be there for him, forever, but also asks Keith to always believe in himself. And once again, Keith’s determination rekindles. The universe has been trying to tear him and Shiro apart from the start, and here Keith opens his eyes, ready to fight it all over again. Ready to defy the stars. To save them both.
And next episode where do we start? Keith opening is eyes in the astral plane, answering Shiro’s call.
Keith’s determination, Keith’s love, led him back to Shiro, and led Shiro back to him in turn. Keith and Shiro found and saved each other.
Their bond was never a weakness that would lead to their fall, like Honerva thought. It was a strength that made them soar.
Some redraws of my favourite screen shots from season 6 ( arguably the best episode/season of vld) with a little added angst cause there weren’t enough tears. I hope they find time to talk about everything that happened.
could you possibly please rec a couple of your fave fics? ♥️
Ok, so I’m assuming: klance fics? Alright, here we go:
texting fics (I love those kind of fics. They almost always seem to nail characters’ personalities and texting style and are so funny to read. The ones I’ll mention now are my absolute fav from this category):
Completed. Keith and Lance are stucked on a planet which citizens believe they are heroes destined to save them. The thing is they have to get married. Aka: Lance, Pidge, Hunk, Allura and Shiro are texting while Keith.exe stopped working. I don’t remember it very well, but I know I had fun while reading. Also, @xxxkaseixxx recommended it to me, so I already knew it’s a good one before starting.
Ok, so it’s not really texting fic but it’s a first part of a series where second part is texting fic. You don’t have to read that one to enjoy it’s continuation but I’m strongly reccomending it, because it’s a joy, I remember that one quote (about Keith’s mullet) made me laugh histerically at 3 a.m.
The story is: Voltron is a Radio Station beloging to Allura and her family and: Black, Green, Yellow, Red and Blue are it’s hosts. The station menagers decide that if all radio hosts specialize in certian topics and have already established base of listeners then Station can be even more popular if hosts would be paired with each other. Turns out they were right. Completed.
One of the first fics I’ve read in this fandom. I don’t remember it very well but the general impression is that it was quite enjoyable. Except that…pining!lance was…very extremaley thirsty and I’m not very fond of Keith being pictured as some sex object. The fic is well written, it’s not like Keith is dumb but pretty. It’s just when you see him through Lance’s eyes it may be uncomfortable for some people.
Lance, Hunk and Pidge are dancers who strongly admire dancing duo Keith and Shiro. Some stuff happens, Lance goes on dancing camp and guess who’s an instructor? Completed.
Ongoing. Shiro and Allura are getting married and Keith - as Shiro’s best man - needs to take some dance lesson because it’s important part of a wedding. So he takes them from Allura’s maid of honor - Lance. There is some actual knowledge about dances so it’s cool. Also, Keith’s a florist.
Also one of the first fics I started reading in this fandom and only recently completed.
Lance is a college student who tries to cut of his addiction to coffee and maybe switch for tea… Keith conviniently is a hot as hell barista in a bubble tea shop. And also college student, double majoring because he’s awesome and perfect and dead inside.
Slow burn torture. Like, really. Agony, but don’t we love it?
Anyway, title kinda tells what it’s about. Hunk decided that Lance as a roommate is too distracing so he moves out but finds Lance a new roommate so he can pay his rent. New roommate turns out to be Keith, Lance’s highschool rival and bisexual awakening. Another one of those where Keith thinks Lance is straight.
*sigh* Probably will never be completed and, unfortunetly, it WILL leave you hanging. So keep it in mind if you’ll decide to give it a try.
But I had to put it on a list becacuse it’s one of the first etc etc and there is a sentence that will probably stay with me forever: „Lance is a person of many acqaintances, but very few friends”. And I get it, I so get it. When you’re charismatic you attract people easily. But only some of them will stay with you after knowing you better.
Keith falls in love at first sight but will he still like that charming stranger who’s actually rude, obnoxious and tactless when he’ll spend more time in his company?
This one is about how on every planet that Paladins visit citizens mistake Keith and Lance as a couple. It happens so often that Pidge decides to collect data and analize it from scientfic point of view. Completed.
I hope it was a helpful list~
Edit: I don’t know how could it happen but I forgot to add one more of my most favourite fanfics:
Keith witness Lance’s “death” and that experience traumatize him. Later when Lance is A-okay he still needs to check on him and can’t get any sleep due to terrible nightmares. Turns out sleeping near Lance helps him get some rest at night, when he can always make sure his friend’s alive.
Great writing. Interesting study in depression (Lance) and feeling alienated in group (Keith). Ongoing- and I’m personally dying to know what happens next, because resent events sort of left us hanging.
I think my favourite thing about older Keith is that he’s so much more confident than he used to be.
When Kuron went off the rails, he always knew what to do. Keith has always been a quick-thinker but in this season he seemed to be more confident with his plans. He knew what he had to do and did it.
And don’t even get me started on his fight with Kuron. That’s where his maturity really shined. Anyone who knows Keith knows that he doesn’t have great control over his emotions. He often lets his anger get the best of him. Or sadness when his family is brought up.
In his fight with Kuron, he may have gone “galran” twice but he was able to control it and turn back to himself. He didn’t let his anger control him. And when Kuron brought up how Keith’s parents didn’t love him, it didn’t affect him. He didn’t show any reaction. It didn’t mess with his head. He just ignored it and kept going. This is a big improvement from when the mere mention of his mother was able to bring him to tears.
Another example of how Keith has been able to control his emotions is how he never backed down in the fight with Kuron. Keith loves Shiro and as we all know, he’d never do anything to hurt him. If the Shiro and Keith fight happened when Keith was younger, he probably would’ve lost due to his hesitance to hurt Shiro.
But he didn’t do that in this fight. Yes, he wasn’t trying to hurt Kuron but he didn’t let Kuron hurt him either. He defended himself but he also fought back enough so that Kuron wouldn’t get the upper hand.
Keith’s changed and it’s so evident in all of his scenes post-episode 2. He’s more confident. More tactical. More how Shiro believed he could be.
Some people are pissed about him ageing two years, but in my opinion, it was needed. It was needed for him to become the person he is now. And even though we didn’t see it, we can guess that it was most likely Krolia’s influence that guided him. Her being in his life did a lot for him (honestly, I would’ve loved to see more than just a quick montage, but hey, you can’t have everything)
Don’t get me wrong. I love awkward, shy, isn’t good in social situations Keith but I love confident, mature, knows what to do Keith better.
Keith needed this. Needed to grow. And I think that’s why the writers aged him up. Not just for the hell of it but because they needed him to mature. I know they cut it short because they don’t have time to dedicate to showing Keith changing but they still put it in because it was necessary.
Keith’s becoming so much better than he thought he could be. And even though Shiro was the main influence for Keith changing his ways, it was those two years he spent with his mother that really completed his transformation. Those two years were crucial to his character development.
I would rather have a two-year-older Keith who finally believes in himself and his abilities than the same aged Keith who always doubted himself and felt like he wasn’t good enough.
Because this Keith, the older keith, knows that he’s good enough.
Keith is finally the person Shiro always knew he could be.
okay here’s the 3 roots to all the problems in the writing in vld s4:
hi so right from the bat i was realising all these problems with uh. everything (including the art style?? who the fuck was in charge of drawing keith?? he has the same inaccuracy as fucking clone!shiro lmao). anyway if there are problems in writing, then you can actually trace it back to its roots and address the problem there, instead of just judging the outcome of the roots.
I’m still doing this because I still can’t get over this season. For more spoiler-filled ranting, check out the cut below to see what I’m raving about when it comes to VoltronSeason 3, Episode 3: The Hunted. I went a bit overboard with this one, apologies ahead of time :D
I haven't watched the new season and don't plan on doing it, but I do wanna what are the episodes worth watching or the good parts could you tell me please? Also would you do a review of the season? I'd like to know what you think of it please?
the only episode i actually enjoyed was 7x09 (which was written by josh hamilton, so no surprise there) but check out my dragons liveblogs for more details.
as for my review, here are the things i liked about the season:
keith and acxa. i was unexpectedly charmed and never minded the idea of them before, so now that she’s on their side i’m down for them to get more development. i am also so, so very gay for acxa and her new haircut, holy shit. plus i have a weakness for enemies-to-friends-to-lovers and idk… they’re both cool galra and she was always my favourite general, and they made good right hands of their respective teams. (new tag for them, otp: it led me to you)
hunk got a lot of great moments and development, holding the team together, flashbacks with his family, new bayard upgrade.
sam holt is a good dude
i liked iverson, although i’m not sure how in character everything was
i ship krolia/kolivan, and ezor/zethrid now oops
pretty animation all througout
never had a problem with shiro’s hair
allura not only making shiro a new arm, but sacrificing her circlet crystal to do so, holy shit
shiro and allura having a one-on-one scene together
shiro defending his work wife space princess (yes this is just going to be everything from 7x09 by now)
hunk and shay reunion
krolia and keith visiting texas kogane’s grave
if we’re not getting endgame shallura, at least klantis can’t be obnoxious as hell bc they got blown out of the water too
things i didn’t like:
too much keith
the way the attack on earth was handled; it should have happened once the paladins were already there, not a year beforehand or whatever
how dirty they did shiro’s character. absolutely awful, but i’m sure i’ll be blogging much about in the coming days
the team suddenly all doing eye glows with their lions? multiple times? like let them all their individual moments, nevermind that keith, lance, and allura shouldn’t be able to do it with ‘their lions’ because they’ve never bonded with them
shiro not being a paladin
even more romantic shallura parallels that clearly aren’t going to go anywhere bc allura blushed at lance out of fucking nowhere
yeah, allur@nce is just Bad
still no background on the druids
voltron confuses to raise the stakes in the biggest way possible (having a season end with the lions being stolen)
the last three episodes were so boring; a lot of episodes were pretty boring actually
lance and keith being discount shiros
vld assuming i’ll care about the cadets even tho i don’t give a shit
killing adam off after what, 6 seconds of screentime? what the hell was that
the admiral was pointless
can vld stop introducing new characters and actually develop the ones we have
romelle just felt like an extra; i didn’t mind what we got from her, but she, like shiro in the first 8 eps of the season, really seemed to just Be There and it was bad
they didn’t let keith die out in space
the placement of the game show ep felt so out of place, i just wanted to get back to the main plot
listen this season was somehow worse and both better than s3 and i don’t even know how that’s possible but they managed it
yeah s7 finally made me (and many, many others) drop the show congrats voltron you really just lost like 90% of your fandom
okay so like i’ve been able to mostly stay out of fandom life here on tumblr for a while, but this new season has left me with a lot of thoughts.
okay so there were a lot of moments I liked from the season. First, the animation was breathtaking. Vehicle Voltron, the weird Altean robeast, that episode where they’re stranded in space???? took my soul. Then there was that friendship between Romelle and Hunk, Kosmo (need I say more), that fever dream of an episode which gave me a brain aneurysm, Hunk and Keith friendship and support, Shiro litTERALLY SINGLE-HANDEDLY GIVING LIFE TO VEHICLE VOLTRON, hunk actually developing a personality that isn’t food, like him actually crying for is family, coran saving the team. all great
however, this season fell drastically short of my expectations when compared to season 6 (the pinnacle of teir work rn imo). there are so many threads for me to pick at, idk where to start.
how about the most obvious let down. THEY KILLED ADAM. honestly, all that press was such nonsense, what pray tell is the point of making the team leader a gay person if he doesn’t get even a semblance of a reunion with his s/o. media consistently kills of gay characters and call it “representation” and that’s not done. it lures the lgbt community into a false sense of hope, and like with an as it is scanty amount of popular media with actual queer rep that’s really not cool. i genuinely thought that LM and JDS would actually pull through after korrasami, ya know?? like that is canon, but they only kiss in the books and i thought we’d actually get the soft reunion tha should’ve been. instead they fueled shiro’s tragic past with more tragedy ‾\_(ツ)_/‾ the man is disabled, has ptsd from being in a fight ring and being captured and tortured, has DIED and is technically not even in his actual body, the least that could’ve been done to make him less of an emotional sob story and more of a functional human is to give him his lost love back in some way. like honestly, a reunion, and then adam fighting alongside shiro and dying would’ve been so much better (also more angsty, y’all missed that fucking opportunity)
next: acxa and keith. what the fresh fucking hell. right now it (thankfully) looks like this is one-sided, but honestly if they end up together i’ll be ultra mad. why, you ask? they’ve had like three scenes together prior, in two she tried to kill him, in one she saved him cause she owed him. and now after disappearing for three years, suddenly she like him?????? acxa is a disposable character, and keith either deserves no canon romance, or someone who’ll actually support him. i mean, i literally can’t think of a more badly done relationship than that.
well actually maybe i can cause watch me segue into my next point of annoyance, which is allurance. until season 5, allurance was LITERALLY my secondary lance ship. i thought they were cute, i thought “both hella hot so why not”. season 6 gave us lotor and allura, and from there i was like “if she gets with lance, it’ll only be because he’s still pining and she needs comfort”. that. is. exactly. what. is. happening. not only does this do injustice to my literal favourite character, it actually shits on allura too. with lance, he really deserves someone who’ll pick him first, and that person is not allura. for six seasons straight shhe showed zero interest, and now because it’s convenient and lance is a big-hearted heartsick fool rn she likes him?????? and for allura, her getting with lance will literally discredit her heartbreak so much. one hug isn’t a cure, and one line spoken with someone else who fell for lotor isn’t closure. heartbreak takes a while to heal form, and if she gets together with lance while she’s still hurting, while the pressure to be strong as the only magical person in the coalition, while she has to come to terms again that her race is being used against her….she’ll hurt both of them. they aren’t right for each other anymore. additionally, i really would be fine with this if they’d at least coded them earlier!!! hunk and shay were coded, allura and lotor were coded, hell even at the begining keith and allura were coded so i’d understand this happening. but lance an allura??? we’ve only got our blue paladin’s unrequited crush which is suddenly requited and it just perpetuates that terrible trope of “if i helplessly pine at this girl and comfort her when she’s hurt, then she’ll fall for me”. they had chances to do this well, and they didn’t. i’m not anti-allurance in fanon, i wouldn’t even be in canon if there was just some indicator that she liked him too. like their interactions have been her breaking down in front of him after he’s felt extra low, and him being the bigger person and comforting her instead of letting himself be visibly vulnerable.
actually in general i feel like lance was handles poorly. not to say that he didn’t do anyting, but he didn’t fulfill his character potential. the feud particularly annoyed me in this because lance isn’t stupid he’s a great at tactics and is so selfless with his camaraderie (he literally jumped at ezor to save pidge??? after she relentlessly made fun of his crush). he unlocked a new bayard FORM in s5. not just new capability like hunk, but an entirely differnt form, and he didn’t get to use it???? at all??????? what was the point of that, to get allura to see him as worthy of her father??? again, not healthy, he shouldn’t have to measure up to anyone to be worthy.
and now to my last point of dissatisifaction. i am a klance shipper, and i held not much hope for this season because i knew that the theme for this season was reunion and going home to defend it. i actually really only headcanoned because i love the ship (still do) and it was fun. we got a lot of heartwarming co-leadership that proves that the two of them trust each other to keep everyone safe. for example, keith knowing lance would make the shot and make it into the cave in the second episode, lance choosing keith in the feud because he would be “the future”, keith trusting lance to get the team back to the lions, him trusting him to give cover during the discovery of the zaiforge canons. like i said, so much trust. and also some nice parallels to previous seasons, like “team leader”, and them both supporting coran in a way very similar to the shiro rescue. which is amazing except…… for the fact that they’re coding these two boys - who trust each other completely now, despite being estranged for months (years on keith’s part) - with two girls that they just don’t have that level of confidence with. with allura and lance, maybe there is to some degree (but not really, allura never really listens to lance except in battle), but look me in the eye and tell me that keith trusts acxa wholly and truly. i think not. and like despite their support, there is so much visual evidence showing how desperately the sowrunners tried to keep them from each other physically (like in the feud there was pidge in the middle, in space keith held hunk and allura, their duo mission was in their lions) what the show did (imo) is code two more straight relationships to bury the already coded queer relationship. attributing it to dreamworks not wanting to idk taint kids with homosexuality or whatever hthat bs is is possible, but also the show streams on netflix which is rank with lgbt shows so it’s more likely that this was planned, and i hate it.
overall, so much injustice was done. allura was pretty useless this season, they kinda forgot about shiro in the first half, and then forgot about romelle in the second. they did this stupid thing of literally paralleling keith and pidge’s infiltration to keith and lance’s balmera fight which sucked. an ngl, imo going back to earth introduced too many new characters that the show just can’t handle. like i loved the reunions and all, but there are now like twenty new cast (even if they’re only recurring) and a show like this isn’t capable of handling so many new faces, especially in the final two seasons. i know Legendary Defender had vehicle voltron from the start, but from watching 80s voltron i can confirm that it hindered the show kinda.
despite having like 13 episodes, i came out of this feeling like it was less accomplished than season 6. the first half of the season which focused on the paladins’ bonds with each other was nice, but honestly once they got to earth everything tilted sideways. too much plot was crammed in where it didn’t need to be. with only 13 episodes left in the show, there is still time to remedy some of this imo damage.
for example, pls keep acxa away from my red boy keith, he deserves someone equally as talented but definitely more reliable. i won’t deny, i can see the appeal, but also it’s trash and would much rather canonically have sheith (which i dislike, but can understand if it happens) than that.
second, let lance use is fucking sword, what is the point of him having it otherwise, bragging rights??????? actually, please give me some actual lance x paladin bonding, everyting to do with him was so forced, even his sister and also the wonders that the show would do if they broadcast a suave male actually getting over a crush healthily would be astounding. and please remove the unhealthy comdeic relief trope from him, there’s still time. y’all worked on atla and did sokka justice, do this one thing for my nihilistic blue paladin. he’s developed so much, but there’s still a ways to go.
as a whole, DON’T SERVICE RELATIONSHIPS THAT LITERALLY JUST WALKED INTO THE RESTAURANT DESPITE OTHER ONES ACTUALLY WAITING FOR A TABLE FOR AGES.
but also please don’t let my precious boy hunk fall back into the foodie trope. and don’t introduce a new pidge arc (i love her but she got five seasons of arc man)
I watched Gigguk’s new video “My Hero Academia Fights are Actually Dull”. Despite what the click-baity title might suggest at first, the video didn’t bash on Hero Aca. To abridge things, Gigguk said that while the fights may not be as spectacular compared to other Shonen anime like Hunter x Hunter, Yu Yu Hakusho, JoJo and the like, that’s okay, because that’s not the point of the series. Hero Aca is about characters on the journey to becoming the hero that they want to be. Because of this, the fight scenes still great because they all have weight to them, adding to the world building or further character development. So when you watch a fight scene in the series, it makes you still go, “Fuck ya!” After he said all that, my thoughts drifted back to VLD.
One complaint I hear mainly from die hard mecha fans is “Why is there hardly any mecha fights in this series?! Why is there hardly any Voltron in a series called Voltron?! The series lied to us!!!” While I do think there are plenty of flaws with this series, I always found this criticism rather dumb. Like Gigguk said with Hero Aca, that mindset seems to be missing the point.
On top of the facts that it’s super hard to make a mech in universe and modern mecha series needing to focus on other aspects because of shorter episode counts like @nomadicism pointed out in a post awhile back, VLD isn’t about Voltron. Voltron itself is merely a plot device to aid the heroes and a symbol in universe. (Hell, the lions have more personality than the mecha itself). Instead, the series is about a war against a galactic dictatorship and the people living through it.
In a lot of mecha series, the pilots are either destined for greatness or trained for it. The paladins in VLD are just five kids from Earth shoved into a situation they hardly understand and are expected to fight. They each are struggling with their own emotional baggage and conflicts, trying to do the right thing while growing more and more each season. They are desperate to win the fight, despite being shoved into it. We slowly see them over coming these issues. We see this within a lot of character interactions, especially between Shiro and Keith and Pidge and her family/the team.
Because of this, these internal struggles and relationships are what mainly drive the plot forward, not Voltron punching things. This, in turn, makes Voltron less important and only used when it’s needed, so there are less mech fights and give us more hand to hand combat ones.
While the mecha fights capping off the story arcs are good, my favourite fight in the series is the Shiro vs Keith fight, because it had the most weight to it. Hell, S6 dropped the day before the All for One vs All Might fight, and I ended up liking the season 6 fight more, because it was that much more powerful. I know people who got into the series because of the Shiro vs Keith fight. I think that fact alone says a fair bit about the intentions of the series, since more emphasis is put on fights like these compared to the more standard mecha ones.
In short: Like Gigguk said in his new video, while Voltron may not feature a ton of mecha action nor have the best mecha fights in anime, and that’s okay, since that’s not really the focus of the series in the first place. Instead, the bonds and character development are the focus of the series and drive the plot forward.
Ok, so this is a Warblers AU, meaning I’m focusing on the acepllea glee club, you know from Glee. Kaline was one of my favourite relationships and I really wanted to do ‘Baby it’s cold outside’ with these three boys, but I didn’t really put it in here. One I didn’t think it correlated with the theme, even with the beginning part, and two, I wanted a lot of action during the song but the way i do songs is give each character a thing with their words, like bolded or underlined, but they lyrics would be spread apart by action, I decided not to. If i can figure out a better way to do this, I’d like to write that scene. Tell me what you think and enjoy. Winter Decorating/Snow Day
in front of a Christmas tree in the Paladin room.
rule about newbies having to decorate the whole room. Whose idea was that
anyway and why does the tree have to be so damn tall?”
Lance was a
student at Voltron Academy, a private school well known for its sciences and
arts. It was the type of school that had a sister school, Altea Academy, they
were that posh. Lance entered the school when the bullying at his school got
much more violent. Being bisexual wasn’t really accepted by the popular
students and the only person who seemed to care was Mr. Coran, his old glee
club coach. His parents, sick of seeing him coming home with bruises, used
their vacation money to pay for the first year at Voltron.
joined the school’s acapella group, the Paladins. He felt safe at the school.
It acted as a boarding school as well and he never got any grief about his
sexually orientation from his roommate Hunk. Then again, Hunk was the sweetest
person alive so… anyway, while he felt guilty that his family couldn’t go on
their vacation because his parents wanted him safe, he felt like he couldn’t
trade his time here for anything. The friends that he made here felt much more
real than the friends he had at his old school. Not that crushes were any
Shirogane and Keith Gyeong, two of the lead singers in the Paladins and Lance’s
current crushes. Problem, they were going out with each other. Good side to it,
apparently the two had been in polygamist relationships before. Lance wanted to
be with them both, but his insecurities didn’t help. The two always got either
solos or lead duets in any performances and they were amazing together as a
couple. What could he bring to the relationship? He was sure Keith wouldn’t
want him in it; the two got along enough, but could argue for ages. Honestly,
it felt like the only way to get his attention. And Shiro, he was so kind and nice
to him, making sure he was ok, but he was like that to everyone. What made
Lance so special?
I know you've talked a bit about Voltron Force's character design, but how you feel about the Lions? To me, the VF lions do have their own aesthetic appeal of being very angular and individually distinct, but I also feel like they make Voltron itself have a very cluttered design (the legs really don't fold in and they stick out, plus the colors are really saturated). Also, do you have a favorite version of the Lions (out of any series)?
oooh, this is a really interesting thing to ask about! :0
i do like how distinctive the VF lions are, and personally i like to think that’s because pidge and hunk have had upwards of a decade to tinker with them and develop them from basic vessels to something which really captures and enhances each individual pilot’s strengths (which is also how i can justify allura’s blue lion looking about twice as feminine as the others for some reason, you KNOW it wouldn’t have been designed that way for VF if sven was still piloting).
(i also feel like the colours are so saturated because pidge chose them, and those are the shades he could see “normally” through his tinted goggles. or it’s intentionally to blind their enemies, lotor would probably be furious at being defeated by something so gaudy)
i’ve got to say i really enjoy the addition of a mane on black lion which indicates it as the leader, too! i absolutely understand (and agree with) what you mean about the cluttered fully-formed design which comes with the other lions being visually distinct, but as the central head of the pack (literally) it’s nice to give black lion that bit of extra pep to show it’s something special. i wish they wouldn’t use CGI for them though, i understand why they did it but all the VF CGI is so glaringly blatant and untextured…
each different version of the lions has its own strengths and weaknesses, but i think my favourite is probably VLD because of how it hearkens back to the golion origin story of “voltron” being sentient (before it was split into pieces and forced to rely on teamwork with others operating its lion parts if it was ever to reform). VLD really plays up the concept of the “chosen paladins” and the tangible bond between lion and pilot, which is something i didn’t like that VF played down to the point where anyone could just jump into any lion, no problem. like, sure, the cadets have got to train to be able to fly a lion in the first place, but it seems to boil down to “handling the temperamental machine” instead of forming a bond with an individual lion. they can sense who isn’t worthy to fly them but there’s a huge amount of interchangeability between the current pilots, and while that’s an interesting concept it really cuts out the magic.
there’s even a scene in golion (and possibly voltron, i haven’t watched the episode dubbed) where it’s shown allura literally cannot fly black lion because she doesn’t have the bond with it that keith does, and i love that element of importance in the relationships between the lions and their chosen pilots. VF portrays the current pilots as… not exactly throwaway elements, but certainly easily replaceable ones, and that doubles as the lions not having an intricate say in who pilots them. i mean, you know VLD’s black lion wouldn’t have let keith give it up to daniel even for a second and that would have saved a whole lot of shit (i also like to imagine green lion wouldn’t have let pidge go because that was WRONG and BAD and i’m still not over the injustice).
yeah, like… i enjoy the concept behind VLD best because it presents the lions as ancient celestial beings with unique consciousnesses and their own choice of pilots instead of just silent machines to fight with, mess around with, misuse/exploit without defense and play Musical Lions with. VF’s approach is a very literal interpretation of “robots”, which is also fun in its own way, but i still like that element of old magic in amongst all the wires and gears and other futuristic technology.
