Hi. Thank You for answering my ask about the research on shrooms and depression. I found it intriguing that the volunteers used computer metaphors to describe the treatment. What do you think of the theory that the brain is a computer?
I don’t think the brain is a computer. It is far more complex and to call it a computer would be a very limiting and tbf inaccurate metaphor. Theres this cool quote which explains why we have a tendency to draw paralells between the brain and various technological developments which is pretty interesting:
“Because we do not understand the brain very well we are constantly tempted to use the latest technology as a model for trying to understand it. In my childhood we were always assured that the brain was a telephone switchboard…Sherrington, the great British neuroscientist, thought the brain worked like a telegraph system. Freud often compared the brain to hydraulic and electromagnetic systems. Leibniz compared it to a mill…At present, obviously, the metaphor is the digital computer.”
