this will make your summer better

some self-care/mental health tips for the upcoming school year

with school coming soon or already starting for some people i figured i’d share some of my tips for a healthier lifestyle. i know in the past i’ve struggled so much with being good to myself once school starts, both mentally, emotionally, and physically!

keep a clean room

i know how hard this is. i’m absolutely awful at it, even in the summer but it really makes the biggest difference. coming home to a mess when your life is already stressful and messy enough just makes things worse. i know when i have a clean space i’m way more productive and at peace with my situation.

take a break from social media

just doing this every once in awhile makes the hugest difference. social media is a wonderful world but it’s easy to get caught up in how everyone is doing things without you or having more fun or how someone’s prettier or whatever. it’s not worth it. i’ve learned that just deleting the apps for even a few hours can make my mental state 10x better. it’s important to realize that while people are out doing things all the time, you can never be as fun as all the 162 people you follow combined.

don’t be afraid to invite people out

one of the biggest things i struggle with is being social, simply because i overthink inviting people to do things with me too much and just wait to be invited by someone else instead. remember that even if someone says they can’t do something, it’s not the end of the world. at least you opened up a possibility!!! by being someone who invites others to do things, people will feel more appreciated and like you actually want to hang out with them! but also always save time for yourself as well!

create a self-care routine with motivation

by giving yourself some type of reward to wash your face, brush your teeth and shower, such as only watching your favorite tv show afterwards, it will feel a bit easier to accomplish the tasks that seem simple but can be terribly hard, especially if you suffer from depression. i’ve learned that combining things into one task also makes it easier, such as once you get in the shower, do everything. wash your face, brush your teeth, shave, all in the shower. it makes self-care so much easier.

get outside, stay out of bed

laying in bed is the best thing ever, i know, but it can be so easy to get in there and never get out. this is my biggest bad habit. i feel more productive even just sitting on the couch. my bed is like a black hole of lost motivation. go outside for twenty minutes a day if you can. sunlight makes things a little better and staying inside all day does nothing for you.

do one thing that scares you everyday, big or small.

i’m someone who has struggled with social anxiety for years now, but i’m slowly getting better because i’m making a conscious (and very terrifying effort) everyday. this won’t work for everyone, i know, but it’s helped me a little bit. i try to challenge myself everyday to do one thing that scares me, whether it’s asking someone to do something after school or agreeing to get coffee with a friend you’re not super close to yet, or even just making conversation with someone next to me in class. don’t push yourself too far but don’t make zero effort either.

cut the negative language/mindset

anytime you have a negative thought find a reverse positive. even saying “i’m not happy with how my hair looks but my ass looks great in these jeans” is better than saying “i look awful today”. stop the constant internal bullying! think of it this way, if your best friend said the things you say to yourself, how would you feel? you’re your own best friend, so cut the shit! compliment yourself like you do your best friend. complimenting myself and finding things i find beautiful on my own body even once a day has increased my confidence exponentially. a negative language towards yourself leads to a negative mindset.

find someone who motivates you

if you need motivation to work out, study, anything, find a buddy. having someone to do things with and hold you accountable makes a world of difference. this summer i got together with a friend and made a deal that we would work out 2-3 times a week. it worked so much better than if i had just made that goal for myself because she was always there to text me to ask to workout when we needed to but i lacked the desire. and i did the same for her. now we actually both got a job at a gym together this fall and are working out consistently because we have that mutual  accountability with each other! plus just having someone you enjoy seeing makes doing the hard task more fun!

accept your individuality

you don’t need to look like society’s ideal of beautiful. there’s millions of types of flowers, and just because one kind is pretty to someone, does that make all the others ugly? no. there’s tons of species of dogs too and they all look totally different. is a poodle ugly just because a golden retriever is cute? NO. your individuality is you. everyone is beautiful in the very own unique way. don’t try to look like someone ellse. your beauty is not measured by how perfect your features are.

drink some fucking water

and eat some food too

understand that a bad week doesn’t mean a bad life

we’re all going to go through those weird ass time periods where it feels like everything sucks and nothing can go right. accept that although it’s pretty bad right now, it won’t be forever.

good luck with this school year everyone! hope my tips help even just one person. take care of yourselves, kiddos.

Health and Hygiene

1.  Switch out coffee for tea.  You still get your caffeine fix without compromising the calories, sugars, and fats.   There are also various flavors and sugar/calorie free sweeteners for tea if you don’t like the taste.

2.  Cut all sodas, energy drinks, and artificial juices out of your diet.  Switching to just water is insanely beneficial for weight loss, nutrition, and to generally feel better.

3.   Use mouthwash before your brush your teeth, not after.   Mouthwash helps to break down colonies of bacteria in your mouth, and loosens them from your teeth and gum surfaces.   Brushing your teeth is what completely gets the bacteria out of your mouth.    Mouthwash before brushing=whiter, cleaner, healthier teeth.

4.   Switch to unscented men’s deodorant.   Women’s deodorant is generally weak af, stains clothes, and doesn’t last nearly as long as men’s.

5.  Switch to men’s razors for shaving your legs/armpits/pussy.  It has finer, sharper blades for a clean shave without nicking your skin.

6.   Never ever ever use douches, scented pads/tampons, or strongly scented soap for your pussy.  It fucks with your natural pH and can cause yeast infections, UTI’s, and just generally throws off your pussy ’s health.

7.   Lotion/moisturize your skin (preferably with SPF) every single day.   Aside from easing dry and dead skin, it helps you tan better and more evenly during the summer.   Using SPF protects your skin from harmful UV rays and makes your skin younger, more radiant, and more flexible.

8.   Do a mini workout in your bathroom right before your shower.   I like to do 50 squats, and then 30 sec side planks on each side while waiting for my water to warm up.  It kills any “no time to workout” excuses, and you can wash any sweat or grime right off immediately after.

9.   Switch up your workouts every 3 months to avoid plateuing.   Keep your body challenged and excited during your workout.

10.    Eat at least 3 meals a day, each with a serving of protein and fiber.   Don’t skimp on fruits and vegetables, and try to cut unnecessary starches and complex carbs.

11.   Make some bomb ass workout playlists to keep you jamming and motivated when you exercise.   Be sure to switch up playlists and songs to keep it interesting, too.   I like to use songs I don’t know the lyrics to; I learn the lyrics through working out, and when I know the song word for word I switch it out for another song.

12.   Stretch before bed every night for a better nights sleep and less soreness in the morning.

13.   Be sure to have an even balance of weight training and cardio in your workouts, to strengthen your muscles, bones, and your heart without exhausting or neglecting any one part of your body.

14.   If your insurance covers it, or you can afford to, go to a chiropractor every few months for a regular adjustment.  It releases endorphins, fixes your posture, relieves any pent up spinal pressure, and feels just as satisfying as a massage.

15.  I like to make sure my feet are smooth, soft, and pedicured at all times.   Buy a small pumice stone to rub your heels and soles in the shower with soap and water.   Always moisturize your feet after you shower, and avoid being barefoot in wet, populated surfaces (public bathrooms, showerhouses, etc)

16.  Before brushing your teeth, dip a cotton swab in some diluted hydrogen peroxide and run it over the surface of your teeth and gums. Hydrogen peroxide kills many harmful bacteria in your mouth. This will leave your teeth cleaner, whiter, and stronger.

5 Ways to Feel Better in 5 Minutes

I know at least one person who has lost all motivation now that summer has begun. There’s something about not being in a regular, structured environment full of like-minded peers that just kinda brings people down, you know? However, you don’t have to succumb to feeling gross now that summer is here. Here are five tips that can be completed in five minutes to make life feel a little better.

Wash your face.

It doesn’t have to even be a full wash. In summer, sometimes a facial wipe-down with a damp cloth can do wonders. It’s cool, it’s refreshing, and it can help energize you to do whatever you wanna get done.

Put away three items.

Right now, look to your right and put away the first three items you see that are out of place. You can keep going if you want. It’s not required, though! Just three seems to be enough for me to feel useful but not put-upon. Plus, now your living space is three items tidier, which is good for morale.

Light a candle and watch it flicker.

Meditation is boring. That’s fair. However, watching a candle burn is similar, in that it allows your mind to empty out and focus on nothing. I could watch a fire burn for ages, lost in my thoughts. Plus, most candles smell nice. Bonus!

Change clothes.

If you’re in a summer funk, I’d bet money you’re wearing at least one article of clothing that you’ve been living in for about a day too long. Go change, now. I feel the most human on days where I dress nice and wear my fancy linen cardigan. You probably have a similar outfit. Go wear it.

Drink a glass of water.

I have once again lost my good water bottle, so I have a new one coming in the mail. Until then, and for the past few weeks, I will be and have been dehydrated. Dehydration can mess with your head in a bunch of ways, none of them good. My willpower decreases, I get lazier, and I don’t sleep as well. So drink a glass of water for me and maybe we’ll both feel better.

Obviously none of these are cure-alls or quick fixes for something more than a minor slump. But for a quick mood boost, there’s few things I’ve found that are more effective. Go kick that summer slump’s butt. You got this!

The new school year is slowly but surely approaching, so I wanted to make a list of some things that could help you to prepare for the new school year and make going back to school easier.

1. Start fixing your sleep schedule early
We all love to sleep in late during the summer, but once school starts we cannot really stay up until 3am and still be in bed at 11am. Try to start fixing your sleep schedule at least two weeks before school starts. Start with going to bed 30 minutes earlier or sleep with the blinds open.

2. Finish all summer homework
Please, please, pretty please, finish your summer homework as early as possible. You will be so happy and feel so relaxed when you don’t have to rush finishing your summer homework and pull an all-nighter during the first week.

3. Buy new school supplies
No matter how much you hate school, getting new school supplies just feels so good! You don’t need to get anything fancy (or expensive), even something as little as a new pen or a notebook can make you feel so ready for school.

4. Clean your room/study space
By cleaning, I don’t mean pushing your papers and notebooks to the back of the closet. Go through every single box and drawer and throw away everything that you don’t need. You will feel so much better when your room and/or study space is clean and not full of old papers and pens that don’t even work.

5. Do some pre-reading
You don’t have to read the whole textbook before your class starts or do anything crazy like that. Something as simple as reading the titles and subtitles, or summaries of the chapters will help you to get an idea of what you will study during the year.

life tips ??

1. coat your feet in coconut oil or cocoa butter and put your socks on while you sleep. Your feet will be sooooo smooth the next morning

2. shave your legs w a men’s razor because they have more blades so you will get a closer shave

3. after shaving lather up in coconut oil (this shit is even safe for yo vagina) 10/10 would recommend

4. whitening strips and treatments are hella expensive, diy version of this is brushing w baking soda and lemon juice (it doesn’t taste that bad)

5. peppermint tea helps sooo much with bloating (and tastes bomb with some honey)

6. adding ½ cup of apple cider vinegar to your bath helps to balance your bodies ph and is really good for vaginal health

7. coffee grounds + coconut oil makes a great exfoliater

8. put vaseline and/or coconut oil on your eyebrows before you go to bed makes them so easy to style if you’re about that bomb eyebrow lifestyle

9. drinking water is the #1 best thing for you; it clears skin, boosts metabolism, and is overall really healthy for your body (esp in the summer)

10. coconut oil is really good for your hair but it can make yo roots greasy, a little bit on the ends goes a long way

11. cranberry juice, yogurt, and water works wayy better than pineapple, but fruit in general will improve yo smell/taste down there

12. if you have a car, keep a change of clothes, chapstick, gum, condoms, makeup wipes, wispies (portable toothbrushes !!!), and some spare change

13. after shaving yo vagina ( if you choose to do so) use coconut oil to avoid irritation/itchiness

14. moisturize yo booty and boobs extra bc the only thing better boobs + booty is super smooth boobs + booty

15. tea tree oil can be super helpful for pimples plus it smells super good

16. if your inner thighs chafe in the summer, put deodorant there it helps so much

17. pee after sex/masturbation ( super important to avoid UTIs)

19. treat yo self

some cheeky fuckin wanker of an insect: i can get in through the smallest gap in your window. i can traverse around your curtains or blinds and make it into your house. you can shut your door all you like, fool. i will simply find my way under the gap in the door and into your bedroom, where i will throw myself noisily at the wall nearest your head.

me, holding the front door wide open, a light on outside to further draw attention to the escape route: hey dude out

the same cheeky fuckin wanker of an insect: what is this? i cannot conceive of this massive gap, better go repeatedly hurl myself at the closed window

  • bookdepository.com (Good for English majors, discounted books shipped around the world)
  • gen.lib.rus.ec (free digital copies of books)
  • HERE is a huge list of textbook PDFs.

Textbook tips

  • ALWAYS check to see if textbook websites have online coupons. Check outside websites like RetailMeNot.com but also sign up for their email listing. They often send you a coupon for just signing up and will continually send you other coupon deals.
  • Amazon has good deals on books sometimes and they offer college students temporary free membership. Here’s a link explaining some of the details.
  • Amazon and other retailers, like Barnes and Noble also offer textbook rental. You get the book for a certain amount of time (30 days, 60 days, 90 days, etc., then mail it back to them.) Much cheaper than buying.
  • Some professors put textbooks on reserve in the library so you can check them out for an hour or two instead of actually buying them.
  • If your class textbooks are at the library and you need them for longer than allowed, you can always photocopy them.
  • Look for Facebook pages/groups with your school name and year, people are always posting online to get rid of their textbooks.
  • If your books are older/literature type books they are often available as e-books for free or easy to find at used bookstore or thrift stores.
  • Ask your professor after hours if you can borrow and make copies of the class textbook.
  • Many colleges use the Link+ library sharing program or something similar. If the textbook you need isn’t offered in the library, another school within the program can deliver the book for free. Ask you school’s librarians about it.
  • If you have a class that requires a “reader,” which is just a bunch of articles, you can usually find them at the school library or online.
  • Keep your textbooks in the best condition possible, so they sell for higher when you no longer need them.
  • If you can access your class list and the emails of your classmates early, ask if anyone would like to share a textbook. Split the price and share it or just ask to copy the chapters needed.

General tips

  • If you get financial aid, set it up to deposit into your own checking account because FAFSA ATMs are frustrating.
  • Check out the dollar stores for some college supplies. They have pens, notebooks, planners, etc.
  • Find upperclassmen who are moving out of their dorms/apartments, they often sell/give away items they are no longer going to be using.
  • Find out if your department offers free printing to undergrads. If yours doesn’t, find a friend whose department does.
  • Pretty much every school offers a MS Office license to students for free. It may not be well advertised but make sure to find out before paying for the programs on your own.
  • Bulk supply stores are usually cheaper.
  • Use your phone’s planner and alerts for assignments.
  • If you need energy boosts, it’s definitely cheaper to brew your own coffee and tea, then use a travel mug. But if you need to go to places like Starbucks, sign up for the Starbucks card so you can get free refills on certain items and get discounts for members only.
  • Find out what free courses your school offers and go to them instead of paying for a tutor.
  • At many universities there are conferences and talks almost daily, which often offer free lunches and dinners.
  • Some colleges offer free cab services so make sure to look into that.
  • Most school health care places give out free condoms and they are often given out at events too.
  • Besides math, older editions of textbooks are usually just fine and much cheaper.
  • Thrift stores are great if you need items for your dorm or apartment, they have appliances and offer testing areas in a section of the store.
  • Specific to Seattle: There’s a place called Seattle ReCreative and you can get school supplies for extremely cheap.
  • Check when stores offer back to school sales and get supplies then for cheaper than usual.
  • Get your syllabus as soon as possible so you can photocopy all the needed pages in textbooks.
  • Look for websites that offer similar information in the textbook, sometimes it’s explained better online, gives examples, or just generally better worded.
  • Buy school supplies during tax-free weekend.
  • Apply for as many local scholarships as possible and do it every year in college, not just freshman year.
  • Ask absolutely every place you go if they offer student discounts. Many places don’t advertise this, but will offer some kind of discount if you show your student ID.
  • Find out if your school has assistance options for lower income students.
  • HERE is a list of food budget tips, recipes, and websites to help.
  • Some classes have extra fees for whatever reason, for example they will charge more if certain equipment will be used. If it’s not a course you need, sometimes it’s better to find cheaper elective classes.
  • Consider community college to save money, and then transfer to a 4 year school. Or attend community college classes during the summer but make sure to always check if the credits transfer.
  • If you need to use a credit card, try to get on with cash back rewards. Also check which banks offer perks for students, like free checking or a no-free policy for low minimum balances.
  • Check out your college newspaper and signs around campus. You will often find information about free events or find coupons with discounts on near by businesses.
  • School supplies that don’t sell at stores like Walmart and Target are extremely discounted during the last week of August.
  • Always check if stores price check.

Summary: There’s quite possibly nothing you hate more than Min Yoongi and his stupid, stupid face—and the stupid, stupid way he makes you feel.
Pairing: Yoongi | Reader
Genre: Fluff/Smut, Camp Counselor AU
Word Count: 11,371
Author’s Note: What better way to celebrate the summer than to mix Min Yoongi and camp counseling? Also, this is my first time getting to write really sarcastic Yoongi and I was really living. And to @minsvga – hEY thanks for encouraging sarcastic Yoongi in the first place, and lots of sinning; this is all your fault.

.

As soon as you step off the bus at the top of the mountain, surrounded by trees and forest and the fresh smell of pine, miles and miles away from your family and the troubles of everyday life—there is without a doubt in your mind that you’re reached your home. The sun is bright, hitting your eyes as soon as you depart from the vehicle, which only serves as a benchmark for what the next few weeks would consist of. And for the most part, you cannot wait to bask in the freedom and the responsibility and the adventure of resuming your counselor position at Camp Bulletproof for the fourth year in a row.

There’s an endearing aspect of being a regular at Camp Bulletproof, one that comes with smiles and waves exchanged with counselors who share the same experience as you, ones you’ve known for many years and have a friendship that can transcend the fact that you all didn’t see each other a lot more than you actually saw each other but that doesn’t stop any of you from spending hours on end supplying backstories for stories or sharing tales from school. It’s a gesture that is done very willingly given that some of these people have plagued your childhood and some of your most fond memories. For the most part, you can’t wait until after hours so the counselors could all have some time to catch up.

For the most part.

Innocence

Pairing: Richie Tozier x Reader

Summary: How does someone so innocent end up with someone like Richie?

___________

Many times, the loser’s Club asked themselves one question.

How does someone like you, an innocent, pure soul, end up with a trash mouth like Richie Tozier?

And unfortunately, they were never able to answer the question.

You had been apart of the Loser’s Club for a long time before you started dating Richie. Of course, not long after Richie joined, you couldn’t help but be attracted to him. His hair, his freckles, his glasses, everything. You might’ve even been in love.

Except, you never understood his jokes.

Even though you were all in high school and you probably should’ve know a lot more, you didn’t. A lot of times, it caused you to be teased, but you could care less.

Though, it did make it hard during times when you were with your friends and joking around. For example, when Eddie complained about Richie spending his summer inside an arcade and Richie responded with, “It’s better than spending it inside your mom.”

As soon as the words left his mouth, Stan immediately shoved his hands on top of your ears while him and Bill glared at Richie.

“D-don’t ruin our precious (Y/n),” Bill said.

So, when you and Richie admitted to liking each other and agreeing to go out, the Losers lost their shit.

“You’re going to ruin her!”

“You’re going to take away her innocence!”

“Don’t mess this up!”

After about a month of dating, they finally got over it. They could see how much Richie tried to limit himself around you and how much he actually cared.

Until one day, everything went wrong.

You and the Losers had been riding your bikes around town, going to get ice cream and then going to the park. You had only been there for about 30 minutes when it happened.

Eddie and Richie had been arguing about the homework you received from your English class when Eddie said, “What in the world did you do with your life to become this stupid?”

“Your mom.”

As soon as the words left your mouth, your eyes widened as did everyone else’s. Hell, even Richie seemed shocked.

The group stared at you for what felt like hours before all hell broke loose. The all immediately started talking (screaming) over each other, completely freaking out. Some of them asked what made you say that while others accused Richie of corrupting “your innocent brain”.

In the midst of all the chaos, Richie suddenly grinned at you from the bench he was sitting on before yelling, “That’s my girl!” Bev then proceeded to slap him on the head.

You blushed bright red at this, wanting nothing more than to disappear. You did not like all the attention and wished you hadn’t even opened your mouth.

Finally, after about an hour of the group freaking out, you all agreed to start heading home. The group went their separate ways while you and Richie walked home together.

The two of you walked side by side in a comfortable silence. That was until Richie spoke up.

“That was hot.”

You looked at him incredulously.

“What?”

“What you said earlier. That was hot.”

You blushed slightly, looking down.

“Thanks, I guess.”

The rest of the walk home was silent, up until you got to your house. You and Richie stood outside, facing each other.

“I had fun today, we should do it again.”

“Only if it includes you talking back like that again.”

“Then maybe I will.”

Giving him a quick peck on the cheek, you rushed inside, leaving a smiling (and slightly red) Richie Tozier on your front porch.

The Night Before School Starts Routine:

Hello Study Buddies! I go back to school on Wednesday so I want to share how I plan to get ready the next before!

Step One: Clear your floors and have an outfit picked out! This will make waking up calmer and cut your time picking out and changing into your school clothes easier!

Step Two: Do a scalp/hair treatments and face mask! Stress can cause acne so doing a face mask will help your skin and relax. I also do a hair mask because I tend to have a lot of product buildup from soap, sweat and school so doing the hair mask is really nice before school starts and I usually do it a couple times a month!

Step Three: Pack your backpack and sports bag. I personally have sports practice after school and need to pack my stuff so I will pick that out and set them to the side along with all of my school supplies!

Step Four: Destress as much as possible. Put on some calming music or read a book. School is stressful enough so being as relaxed as you can before hand is really great!

Step Five: Make sure all your summer work is done!!! This could throw the whole relaxation out the window but better doing it last minute than never!

Step Six: Go to bed early and try to keep your phone off! The light from your phone will make it harder for you to fall asleep. Also you will most likely have a lot on your mind because of school and nerves so the sooner you try to go to sleep the more sleep you’re going to get. (tip maybe consider having a natural sleep remedy like a nighttime tea or melatonin)

Step Seven: Know your schedule and set your alarm. I personally put a screensaver of my schedule on my phone and set my alarm for 5am!

masterpost of iconic lines/moments in Froot (2015) by Marina and the Diamonds

Happy:

  • when the chorus effect starts on the line “melted away like I was free” and my soul escaped my body, went to hell, and was immediately forgiven by the benevolent god that is marina diamandis
  • “I realize to be happy, maybe I need a little company” and I started crying one minute and forty seconds into the album
  • the sheer force with which my head was ejected from my body when she hits the high note on “I believe someone’s watching over me”
  • the chord changes in the bridge making me feel melancholy realness, honey
  • invented the piano, invented happy songs that sound sad, invented music
  • I’ve fallen asleep crying to this song an uncountable amount of times

Froot:

  • THE FUCKING BASS RIFF IN THE FIRST TWO SECONDS which precisely and methodically severed my ear canal from my cranium
  • everything about this song
  • “ju-u-u-uice, la la la la la la la” >>> the entire discography of the rolling stones, the beatles, led zeppelin, and all of your dusty-ass “iconic” faves
  • the sultriness of the fucking low G she hits perfectly and consistently throughout the verses
  • “but I ain’t in a patient phase” probably the most iconic modern music will get
  • the way she sings “come on fill your cup uuuuuuuUUUUUPP” shattering my femur
  • “i’ve been saving all my summers for you” assassinates all of the poetry by William Shakespeare combined
  • every part of the second verse, especially “baby I am plump and ripe, I’m pinker than shepard’s delight, sweet like honeysuckle late at night” which was better sex-ed than I received throughout my entire adolescent academic career
  • “birds and worms will come for me, the cycle of life is complete” making fucking DECOMPOSITION the sexiest thing anyone has ever said in the compendium of human history
  • The Fucking Bridge Melody that she sings well beyond the troposphere, above the stratosphere, and sitting sexily in the mesosphere
  • “oh my body is ready, yeah it’s ready, yeah it’s ready”

I’m a Ruin

  • marina single-handedly addressing the complexities of young-adult relationships with “I could treat you better but I’m not that smart”
  • the insane degree to which I scream “yeah yeah, uh huh, woo hoo, yeah yeah” at the end of the chorus, thus startling my neighbors and setting off car alarms
  • “It’s difficult to move on when nothing was right and nothing was wrong” making me spray tears out of my eyes like a machine gun
  • the way the back up vocals come in on “I’ve had my share of beautiful men, but I’m still young and I want to love again”
  • the dichotomy of “I’ll ruin you” and “I’m a ruin” are proven to be one and the same, thus ending the careers of marriage counselors across the world

Blue

  • the iconic and instantly-memorable backing track
  • the continuity between the themes of the last song with the opening line “we’ve broken up and now I regret it”
  • the FORESHADOWING of “and I don’t know why but I can’t forget it” which alludes to the themes of the NEXT song, Forget, basically proving Marina doesn’t need references to any body of literature but her own goddamn songs
  • “gimme love, gimme dreams, gimme a good self-esteem” ejecting my wig at mach 3 into another dimension
  • the sheer craftsmanship of the pre-chorus, which is perfectly catchy and memorable while refraining from cliches
  • the way the beat picks up on the chorus and I demand my non-existent ex to “gimme one more night”
  • “I’m sick of looking after you, I need a man to hold on to, I’m bored of everything we do, but I just keep coming back to you” proving marina is just as fed up with fuckboys as we are, but is just as flawed and hypocritical as us, showing her imperfections and making her more worthy of our worship
  • ending the song on the pre-chorus like the fucking INNOVATOR of MODERN MUSIC she is??? like please tell me WHEN will your fave

Forget

  • this list doesn’t include the visuals from the music videos but I will make an exception for the ICONIC wig she wears in the video
  • the vocals for “never heal” sending me into a tailspin and crashing into a ditch at 70 mph
  • 50% of the chorus is the word “forget” and it is STILL the height of modern literature
  • after her mention of an “abacus” in the second verse, abacus sales went up 2000% and surpassed their unprecedented popularity in ancient Greece
  • “yeah it’s time to be letting go, yeah baby you know what I’m talking about” probably the most iconique start to a bridge physically possible in this dimension
  • “YEAH I’VE BEEN DANCING WITH THE DEVIL I LOVE THAT HE PRETENDS TO CARE IF I’LL EVER GET TO HEAVEN WHEN A MILLION DOLLARS GETS YOU THERE OH ALL THE TIME THAT I HAVE WASTED CHASING RABBITS DOWN A HOLE WHEN I WAS BORN TO BE THE TORTOISE I WAS BORN TO WALK ALONE” is not supposed to be a high-intensity part of the song but I don’t fucking care obviously
  • the way she fucking develops the lyrics of the chorus throughout the song and makes each line the best life lesson you ever heard??? who is this woman?????

Gold

  • by FAR the most underrated song on the album for no goddamn reason like, have you demons even listened to it?? hmmmmm????
  • i have no idea how the accompaniment was made for the song but whoever did it was a genius and needs to be remembered for the rest of time
  • “doesn’t matter long as I am your star, sta-AAARRRR” melodically groundbreaking, please take notes everyone
  • “don’t think i want what I used to want, don’t think I need what i used to need” addressing the pains of growing out of old friendships and passions in a fun approach
  • “you can’t take away the Midas touch, so you better make way for a GREEK GOLD RUSH” YES MAMA REPRESENT YOUR COUNTRY LIKE THE GODDESS YOU AAAARE
  • knew she could rhyme “El Dorado” with “Colorado” and fucking did
  • the fade out at the end of the song painting her as a con-artist or corrupt gold-dealer being hauled off to jail while reveling in the near success of her schemes is what???? I C O N I C

Can’t Pin Me Down

  • this song is direct proof that marina is a straight up motherfucking KUNT in charge of her destiny. the album is labeled as explicit because of this ONE song and only ONE line: “you might think I’m one thing, but I am another. You can’t call my bluff, TIME TO BACKUP MOTHERFUCKER” like not only is this the most badass line in the history of language, but this line was so important to her that she made the album explicit JUST FOR THIS ONE LINE. SHE IS AN ICON. END OF STORY.
  • she is a feminist! BUT! “Do you really want me to write a feminist anthem, I’m happy in the kitchen cooking dinner for my husband” proving that you do NOT know this bitch. she is nothing you think she is. except that she is an I C O N.
  • the meter of “just another girl in the twenty-first century” has me unpredictably and immeasurably shook because she is just! that! kind! of! girl!
  • “You think I’m like the others, boy you need to get your eyes che-e-e-e-e-e-ecked, che-e-e-e-e-e-e-ecked” blew the skin clean off of my face
  • “i can be your russian doll” like,,,, gag
  • the entire concept and existence of this song is revolutionary and cements her position as the strongest female artist of our generation

Solitaire

  • holy FUCK you guys love to hate amazing songs, don’t you?? this song is without a doubt one of my favorites and you fuckers have the NERVE
  • the production on this song is one of a kind and continues to prove her versatility in style on this album. any reservations you had about her from electra heart better be EVAPORATED by this point.
  • the melodies on this song are, besides Froot, the catchiest on the album for me. they are so well crafted and inventive, i am shaking
  • “hard like a rock, cold like stone, white like a diamond, black like coal, cut like a jewel, yeah I repair myself when you’re not there” is such an amazing pre-chorus for this song like it could no possibly be better than that
  • the way the mood shifts from the verse to the chorus cut off my arms with raw blunt force
  • the flourish on the line “and I’ll admit all I wanna do is get drunk and silent” gave me an aneurysm
  • holy fucking SHIT the end of the bridge is for sure a highlight on the album. “but I’m not cursed, i’m not cursed, I was just covered in dirt” like damn marina go all the way off
  • the extra-dimensional high notes on this song are second to none, babes

Better Than That

  • “You’re just another in a long line of men she screwed” is the FUCKING WAY TO START A SONG, GIRLS. ARE YOU JOTTING THIS DOWN??
  • “So why’s she looking like a cat who got the cream?” ugh marina is so perfect I cannot deal with this bitch anymore
  • the sheer vocal talent on the chorus, like how high can this girl go? someday she’s going to rupture my eardrums and I will thank her personally
  • “with an angel voice, devil in disguise” the vocal production for this is perfect and successfully made me shit myself
  • “and she’ll network till her dreams come true, even if it means getting in a bed with you” miss marina is out for BLOOD everyone, the music industry is cowering in fear of her objective talent and lack of fucks
  • “i’m not passing judgment on her sexual life, I’m passing judgement on the way she always stuck her knife in my back” whoever this woman is she is getting READ for FILTH by lady diamandis and you all need to watch your backs

Weeds

  • this song is straight out of a sappy rom-com and I am fully living for it
  • “but it keeps growing back like WEEDS” I am currently screaming please give me a moment
  • “and God knows what sex is, a way to feel a bit, a little bit less lonely” marina chose sex to be a prominent theme on this album but she has shown she can handle it in the moment mature way any woman in the industry can. it’s subtle, it’s methodical, it isn’t vulgar, it’s just straight real and honest and such an important thing to discuss! this song is another aspect of how sex can be important in our lives. she better preach tbh
  • the aesthetics can reserved character on this song are a beautiful contrast that the album needed. filler tracks who???

Savages

  • full disclosure, this song blew a hole right through my body with the sheer impact of its lyrics and chorus
  • there are so many fucking good lyrics on this song, it’s truly baffling that anyone has a career in the music industry after this was dropped
  • “I’m not afraid of God, I am afraid of man” I am Screeching
  • the first beat of the chorus, my bodily fluids are already dripping from the ceiling and my bones are crushed into a fine powder
  • “underneath it all, we’re just savages hidden behind shirts, ties, and marriages” she is prophet, the chosen one, the woman who will deliver us from our mortal coils
  • “another day, another tale of rape, another ticking bomb to bury deep and detonate” Marina is fully aware of the important problems our nation is facing at the time the album was released and even to today. she isn’t a shallow artist like the persona she created in electra heart, she has become almost the exact opposite. She is taking on these issues with a clear judgment and grace and I am so proud and appreciative of her work.
  • “are you killing for yourself or killing for your savior?” YES YOU BETTER ASSASSINATE THESE MOTHERFUCKERS
  • the buildup in the last chorus to the E T H E R E A L ending is clearly the climax of modern pop music

Immortal

  • you could play this song for me and tell me it’s a message from an angel and I would 200% believe you
  • the melody on this track is so fucking pristine it’s like a glacier melting in your mouth
  • it continues the themes of humanity from Savages but looks at a completely different issue about it. this album is cohesive, planned out, and a complete and full body of work
  • the moment the chorus hits with “I’m forever chasing after time” my limbs are being forcibly extended by a device of love and torture
  • “but if the earth ends in fire, and the seas are frozen in time, there will be just one survivor, the memory that I was yours and you were mine” ok not kidding anymore this is STRAIGHT up MOTHER fucking POETIC genius and innovation at its most concentrated and talented moment
  • when she says “twice” on the high note in the chorus, it’s like the most beautiful bell shattering in my ear, tbqh
  • THE FUCKING BRIDGE is actual art. “I just wanna be able to say the I live my life” the way she executes this melody is cold-blooded and frankly she should be charged with manslaughter for it

bottom line, Marina Diamandis released the biggest breakthrough in pop music to date in 2015 and all of you demons let it flop. if you have the nerve to call this album a failure, I have literally 0 respect for you and no one is ever going to love you

Things I learned in my first year of college

This is more for my reference than anything else, but if you find this info helpful then cool. The ones with *** are the one I found most important or didn’t find on the internet when I was looking for tips.

  • ***Your feet will hurt from walking around so much. Don’t bother getting new shoes to cope because by the time you break those in you’ll be used to walking around. Save that money for food.
  • ***Go to career fair. You’ll probably not get the internship or job your first year, but at least you’ll know how to dress yourself, research companies, and present yourself.
  • Go to club meeting where a company rep is present. Company reps have insane memory. They’ll remember you. Especially if you go see them every time. Helpful for when you’re applying.
  • Get a foam mattress topper
  • Don’t have a crush. You’ll waste so much time thinking about it it’s not even funny.
  • Make friends. Make connections. Have fun. Get lit (safely).
  • Always plan your safe ride home or you’ll spend $56.50 on an uber at 3 am.
  • Use the free bus rides you get with your tuition.
  • Always ask for student discounts.
  • ***Don’t just do academics. Having a 4.0 is cool and all, but no company or grad school wants you if that’s the ONLY thing you did.
  • ***Be busy. When you’re busy, you manage your time better and be more productive instead of procrastinating because “oh that test is in like a week and I have nothing to do besides that so I’ll do it later.”
  • ***Know your limits. You can’t handle being actively involved in 5 clubs and school. You’ll kill yourself in the process. Limit yourself to 3 clubs because it only gets harder from here.
  • Join clubs. Find something besides just academics that peaks your interests. It’ll make you a better student and expand your views.
    • Join one fun club like a sorority and one serious club like business council.
  • Work out. You’ll gain weight if you don’t. Set a routine in the summer so you can follow during the year when things get busy.
  • Be safe. Let’s be real, it’s college and there’s drugs and alcohol everywhere. If you choose to do it, be safe about it. Here’s some safety tips.
    • Always use a condom. Get them free from your university health center.
    • If you’re gonna drink for the first time, do it at home or somewhere that you are comfortable and know
    • If you’re gonna do drugs, again do it at home or a safe environment
    • Don’t ever leave your open drink unattended. Get a new one if you do.
    • You know when someone is sleazy or creepy. Stay away. If they’re persistent, give a fake name or number, get some random girls to let you (Oh jessica we’re leaving lets go), or straight up get away
    • Never go somewhere alone at night. Even if you have pepper spray.
  • Visit your family at least twice a semester if you can. They miss you and do a lot for you. Go visit them. I visited mine once a month because empty nest syndrome is real.
  • Don’t study where your friends are. You’ll get distracted because when it’s 3 am and your getting sick of studying, procrastinating with friends seems super fun.
  • ***Study with a group. Sounds counter intuitive considering my last tip, but for things like ochem, engineering classes, business projects, or whatever, the classes are designed that if you don’t work in groups you will fail. Find a group of people/friends that are actually productive for studying and stick with it. Form a study squad. Join with other squads from time to time.
  • Don’t eat out a lot. You’ll get fat and broke.
  • Drink lots of water. Refillable water bottles ftw.
  • Get off your phone in class. No you can’t pay attention and listen at the same time.
  • Email your professors. Go to extra review sessions. When you’re .04 off from getting an A this will help you.
  • ***ONLY go to TA sessions if they grade the work and/or actually help you learn. Some TA’s are garbage because they’re required to do it for grad school. But they grade your stuff and if you’re one the few people who’s name they know, that’ll definitely help you. If you learn nothing from them and they don’t grade your stuff, don’t waste your time.
  • Sleep. That all nighter is worse for you than not knowing anything. Cram the best you can and at least get 3 hours.
  • Save your notes. You’ll never know when you’ll need it, if your friend needs it, or sell it.
  • ***Use a notebook. Don’t write notes on loose leaf paper. You’ll lose track of it. If you take notes on a laptop, use onenote or something idk I have math and science notes, I can’t take that on a laptop.
  • If you’re business or something along the line of that, look nice to class. Everyone else is too. Don’t have a professor notice you for your scrubbiness. Comb your hair, throw on some mascara, and wear whatever makes you feel good to class.
  • ***If you’re stem or something like that, don’t worry to much about looking nice. Unlike business, the professor is probably dressed scrubbier than you. If you look nice, cool, you’ll get noticed for not being scrubby like everyone else.
  • ***Have desk space. You’re gonna have your laptop, a million papers, and studying utensils out. Have the space for it so you don’t go crazy trying to look for stuff.
  • ***Have a planner. The most important one. Whether it is hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, or whatever, have one. You have a lot of stuff to do, and you can’t remember it all. Buy one, print one, use google calender, doesn’t matter just have it.

This might not work for everyone, because some of you are these highly motivated studious students that has their life together, which is awesome please teach me your ways, but if you’re a mess like me, these are some tips I wish I found on a studyblr or college tips.

Check out Motivational Quotes Part 1 and Part 2

i’m on summer break right now.

relaxing

▸ cleaning out last year’s papers. separate everything into things you may need next year (important papers, prerequisite course papers, etc.) and things to throw out. it feels so so refreshing to get old papers out of the way

▸ going outside. schoolwork sometimes makes it difficult to get outside during the school year so I take advantage of the summer break to get some fresh air and unwind. I like to garden and go for runs / walks. nature makes me very happy.

▸ eating good food. it’s so so great to be able to take the time and enjoy what I eat and try seasonal foods and new things. also: fruit always tastes so much sweeter during the summer + there’s a lot of fruit picking going on so I usually go with friends and family to pick and eat together. and there are usually more vendors that come to farmers markets during the summer so check those out!

▸ catching up on books. during the school year I don’t get time to read a lot so every summer I look forward to going to the library and getting books to read.

▸ visit new places you’ve always wanted to go to. I’m planning on going to a couple cool places downtown with friends + family and there’s a botanical garden in my area that holds fun summer events. you can have fun without it costing you much at all!

learning

▸ skills. try something new, start a new project! I’m going to try and learn something new on the piano and work on a scarf for the winter time.

▸ preview for the upcoming school year. don’t stress about it. go at a relaxed pace and skim through the material a bit. you’ll get a better understanding of the topics and it will be easier to grasp concepts during the school year. Here’s a post I’ve made on summer studies.

▸ learn something you’re interested in. if there is a topic you’re really passionate about or something you really like, learn more about it. I’ve always wanted to know more about the evolution of language so I’ll be reading about that during the summer time.

▸ visit museums. they often have cool and interesting exhibits. if you hear about one you think you would like, go for it!!

▸ writing. if you like that sort of thing. I like writing poems and I’m also working on a story. I feel like my brain is more open during summer break and just works better in general.

reminders

▸ hydration hydration. drink lots of water and try different lemonades and teas.

▸ skin care. sunblock is necessary for healthy skin and you need to put some on so that you don’t get a painful sunburn. also be sure to moisturize your skin during the summer so that it doesn’t dry out. I like to use a ginger cream because it smells wonderful and it’s very light (I don’t like sticky and thick moisturizers).

▸ don’t stress. just relax and go about your day, don’t make a confining schedule because it’s often stressful when you aren’t able to do things exactly at that time and suddenly summer doesn’t feel so relaxing or free anymore. you need to find the balance between being productive and having a day that flows smoothly.

have a lovely summer! -hana from kiyoko-studies

Activities for Litha

Since I am a solitary witch, I am unable to celebrate the Sabbats with other witches or a coven. So, I have activities that any witch - solitary, stuck in the broom closet, non-solitary, etc. - can do in celebration of Litha.

Litha is Sabbat that focuses on love (yourself, your family, your friends, your partner), abundance, and letting go. It is a sabbat to take action in your affairs, as the primary element is the Sun/Fire. Even if you cannot soak up the sun, there’s plenty to do for Litha:

1) Admire Summer: Whether it’s a hot, bright summer day or a summer storm, enjoy the Solstice! Stop to smell the flowers, bask in the weather and full bloom of nature, or just enjoy the longest day of the year.

2) Light a candle: As Fire is the primary element, simply lighting a candle is a great way to celebrate! Some choose to light it during the day and allow it to burn throughout the day. But for some witches, like myself, who cannot stay at home to watch the candle and are worried about a fire hazard, I choose to light my candle when I return home. Praying to the candle is another aspect to consider. Bonus if you a light a candle that is made from beeswax!

3) Use Summer herbs: This year, I’m focusing on three main summer herbs: Lavender, Chamomile, and Sage. Lavender and Chamomile for relaxing and enjoying the summer, while Sage is for cleansing and letting go. I love Litha for the aspect of doing a 6-month review of the year and deciding what needs to be let go and what I need to change. I’m choosing to use bath salts that contain these herbs, as water is another cleansing tool. You can use these herbs for teas, baking, harvesting, tool making (such as dream pillows or charm bottles), and incense.

4) Color-coordinate and accessorize: Yellows, oranges, and other similar summer colors are a low-key way to celebrate. Wear these colored clothing or accessories in celebration. If you have accessories or clothing that have butterflies, bees, other pollinators, and birds, even better! Got sun-theme jewelry? Also good!

5) Watch the sunrise/sunset: Many suggest watching the sunrise on Litha, and others say watch the sunset. Your choice! Just enjoy the beautiful colors and scenery of a sunrise/sunset.

6) Focus on yourself: Figure out what you want to let go. We’re 6 months in and it’s time for a review. Are you happy? Are there things you can let go of? Take the time to review yourself, your path, and your life. See what you want out of your life and make a plan to achieve it.

7) Celebrate love: Love yourself, your family, your friends, and/or your partner. Single? Say a prayer to search for love. Cast a love-magnet spell, or a self-love spell. Hell, do some divination on the topic of love (romantic, platonic, and/or familial) Most importantly, express your love. Do things that promote self-love. Tell your family, friends, and/or partner you love them.

Enjoy Litha and blessings to you all!

A few things occurred to me the day I wore my new red gingham dress to go to a cute cafe and indulge in cappuccinos and chocolate cake.

One: You can never be too old for a good hair bow. Especially if it is velvet. I’m wearing a hair bow at 32 and I’ll wear one at 64.

Two: Red and pink is a dream combination for all things cute, romantic and retro. You can’t go overboard with red and pink because it’s already there. You can only make it greater and better. I went the classic route with this ASOS Curve red gingham dress and added touches of pink and more red everywhere else. (Red gingham for summer, how original etc.!)

Three: This dress is massive. I mean I love massive but this is too big even for my preferences. I generally wear a 18-20 at ASOS, this is a Curve 20. I had to get this dress hemmed by about 3 inches so it wasn’t swamping me. If you have your eye on this piece, sizing down would probably be a good idea.

And four: I’m a ridiculously dressed fatty eating chocolate cake all by myself at a cafe while my photographer snaps photos of this event. This is what living my best life looks like. And I don’t mean that in a self deprecating way. Outfits that verge on the ridiculous are my jam. Cake is my favourite food of all time. When the two meet, I’m in heaven. As a fat person, however, I’ve had my share of anxieties about eating in public. It’s hard to enjoy your food when you can feel the scrutiny every time you take a bite.

It’s taken me a great deal of time, above anything else, to feel comfortable with and actually enjoy eating in public. Apart from that, here’s what also helped: having supportive friends with whom I could go out for a meal without being judged for my food choices. This is so very important. For women, especially, diet talk at the table is pretty much inescapable. But don’t give in to the pressure to participate! Let your friends and family know why you aren’t comfortable going out to dinner with them. And if you don’t have anyone you’re comfortable eating with, go out for a meal on your own. This might sound terrifying thanks to all the lonely fatty tropes but it really is surprisingly liberating.

Several years ago when I was at University in the UK I got into the habit of taking myself out to dinner maybe once a month. Being my hermity self, I didn’t really know anyone there, so I’d just go out on my own. Browse the bookstores, have a walk around town, get myself a bite to eat. And those are some of my fondest memories from that time - spending a peaceful few hours by myself in the company of good food and a good book.

If you’re fat, there’s a certain species of person that’ll always judge you no matter whether you’re eating salad or cake. They judge us for daring to exist in their field of vision - there’s no winning with this lot. Rather, the only way to win is by ignoring their garbage opinions and living your best life anyway. Revenge is a life well-lived, so eat the salad and the cake with joy!
