this was such an epic award show
How Fifth Harmony Moved On and Took Control of Their Music: 'The Fans Are Our Fifth Member'
They may be down one sister since Camila Cabello’s messy exit from the group in December, but the women of Fifth Harmony are counting their blessings.

Ally Brooke Hernandez, 24, has a two-tone thing happening, with a black leather hat and skirt paired with a fuzzy pink sweater and pumps. Normani Kordei, 21, has accented herself with huge chrome hoop earrings and silver-dipped nails. Lauren Jauregui, 21, wears a lacy boho-chic blouse and carries her puppy, a rescue mutt named Leo. Then there’s Dinah Jane Hansen, 20, who peels off a trippy floral jacket to reveal a bright yellow tee that reads, in big block letters, “I’M A RAY OF FUCKING SUNSHINE.”

Fifth Harmony used to tour malls like this: shopped from town to town, crammed between kiosks for tchotchkes and lit by department store signs. That was in 2013, less than a year after its lineup was now-famously chosen by Simon Cowell and Antonio “L.A.” Reid flipping through the headshots of X Factor contestants on the verge of washing out. The teens twice tried to christen themselves, but the first name (LYLAS, for “Love You Like a Sister”) was already in use, and the judges hated the second (1432, pager code for “I love you, too”), so Cowell asked viewers to submit ideas online. Rebranded Fifth Harmony, they took third place and stepped off the show into a joint deal with Reid’s Epic Records and Cowell’s Syco Music.

But those are all tales of an earlier era, before 2016, the group’s biggest year yet – and the one that ended in shambles when, exhausted and unfulfilled, 5H lost Camila Cabello to a solo career. Last year’s 7/27 debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, propelled by “Work From Home,” the first top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit from a girl group in nearly a decade. But the acrimonious December split made even bigger news, with 5H accusing Cabello of quitting through her reps, and Cabello denying the accusations. It was… awkward.

“Try experiencing it,” retorts Jauregui when I volunteer as much. The rest of the group, as it so often does, rushes in to complete her thought. “I was literally going to say that,” Kordei quickly adds. “I get to sleep at night knowing we did everything in our power as friends, bandmates and human beings” to make it work. Then Hernandez: “You can’t change people.” And finally, Hansen: “Let’s just say we’re in a better place now – there are no secrets in this circle.”

Jauregui admits she nearly threw up from anxiety before the downsized 5H’s first performance, at the People’s Choice Awards in January. But today, the members are quick to (literally) high-five each other as they talk about their ongoing 7/27 Tour, the first in which they’ve built in real downtime, and a third album, due later this year on Epic. “Honestly, in this very moment, we could not be happier,” says Hernandez with more assertiveness than the Pollyanna-ish cheer that’s her trademark. Their first new single as a foursome, “Down” – a neon-edged dancehall bubbler featuring a warmly romantic verse from Gucci Mane (“Got me showing off my [engagement] ring like I’m Jordan”) – reached No. 42 on the Hot 100. Meanwhile, Cabello’s “Crying in the Club,” which entered the charts two weeks earlier, peaked at No. 47. Both are still active on the Mainstream Top 40 list.

“Crying in the Club” is a wide-screen, Sia-style ballad and “Down” is an airy dance track, but the two have more in common than just a chart trajectory: They’re both grown-up songs for longtime professional “girls” now expected to be seductive women. The 5H video, which racked up 21.6 million views in two weeks, even seems to offer some sly commentary on this, with the group pulling up to a seedy motel and writhing on beds in separate rooms. But the women have come up with their own narrative for the lyrics, which came to them from “Work From Home” co-creators Ammo and DallasK, and include “You the type that I could bake for/’Cause baby, you know how to take that cake” – as well as the chorus, “Long as you’re holding me down/I’m going to keep loving you down.”

“We dedicate it to each other,” says Hansen. “We’ve been together five years, so that message is powerful to us. We’ve been there for each other through ups and downs.” Hernandez hits her with an “Amen.”

The single is only a slice of what’s to come, because for the first time, 5H is co-writing its songs – over half, in fact, of those destined for the new album. Since January, it has been holding songwriting camps between tour stops, mostly at Windmark Recording, just two miles from here. The group typically breaks into pairs, then takes turns with that day’s writers and producers like 5H alums Monsters & Strangerz and pop and R&B producers Harmony Samuels (Ariana Grande) and Sebastian Kole (Alessia Cara).

“It’s not like they came in at the end and started riffing,” says Leah Haywood of Dreamlab, which has two songs on the album. “We sat and wrote verses together, because they’re empowered women who want to be pushing the agenda.” Justin Bieber’s go-to hook man Poo Bear, who worked with Skrillex on a 5H session, adds, “I was pretty blown away. They were hungry and excited and seemed like they had a serious new point to prove.”

Those collaborators create “safe spaces,” says Jauregui, where they can try ideas without fear of judgment. But the world outside isn’t so cushy. Plenty of popular girl groups have lost members and carried on, but none have found more success. En Vogue withered commercially without Dawn Robinson. Destiny’s Child hit peak sales just before LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson were ousted. And the one Spice Girls album that followed the departure of Geri Halliwell was an abject flop.

One Direction provides a hopeful example – Made in the A.M. handily outsold its predecessor even without Zayn Malik. But the industry is perhaps kinder to boy bands. As much as its music (and videos) might be maturing, 5H is dedicating itself to an idea almost radical in its innocence: that four pop stars are better off as a single group – albeit with a name that, at this point, feels a bit silly. “The fans,” quips Hernandez, “are our fifth member.”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, whose 15-year-old daughter Simone is “pretty tight” with Hansen, says 5H is “aspirational to so many young girls around the world.” He adds, “Once the drama [of Cabello’s exit] settles, instead of looking at it as a devastating loss, I look at it as an amazing opportunity for growth.”

We’re now inside, aprons on, at The Gourmandise School of Sweets & Savories. The women chat about how much they love SZA’s Ctrl as they pioneer new ways to Snapchat themselves, chopping scallions for quesadillas, charring tandoori-style chicken wings and deep-frying homemade potato chips. Overseen by a chef named Jamie, they share kitchen duties with an almost psychic ease – except for the cookies. The plan is for everyone to pitch in on a batch of the classic chocolate-chip variety, and that’s how it starts. But then Jauregui asks for white chocolate, Hansen requests pretzels, and Hernandez wants her Texas pecans (she’s from San Antonio). Soon one mixing bowl becomes four, and Kordei is in the pantry foraging hazelnuts, Rice Krispies and almond extract.

It’s a cute metaphor for how 5H’s members are cultivating their independence not only from their corporate minders but from one another. It’s also woefully inadequate in addressing Jauregui’s personal journey during the last few months, starting with a declaration she defiantly slid into an open letter to Trump voters, which she wrote for Billboard in November: “I am a bisexual Cuban-American woman, and I am so proud of it … I am proud to feel the whole spectrum of my feelings, and I will gladly take the label of ‘bitch’ and ‘problematic’ for speaking my mind.”

In March, Jauregui shared photos from a November “coming-out” shoot, as photographer Nicole Cartolano characterized it to MTV, with her then-girlfriend Lucy Vives (daughter of Colombian singer Carlos Vives). Her sexual identity has since cropped up in her music. Jauregui briefly made an appearance on the Hot 100 as a guest on Halsey’s “Strangers,” which, as a duet about an it’s-complicated same-sex romance, has inspired more than a few think pieces.

Jauregui’s openness speaks not only to the accepting nature of 5H but also to the potential for a mainstream girl group in an era where many minorities feel under attack. 5H is still a place for purity rings. Hernandez is wearing a “TRUE LOVE WAITS” band. She and Kordei identify as Christian, while Hansen is Mormon. But all insist Jauregui’s expression is “supported.” And Jauregui, who believes in “the universe and a god source, like an energy,” seems content with this. But asked if she would be comfortable singing about a relationship with a woman in a 5H song, she says she doesn’t know, “because it has to do with me personally. It doesn’t speak for everyone in the group, which is its own entity as an artist. That’s the whole reason for doing your own thing.”

Kordei has recently added a new chapter to her story, too. She competed on Dancing With the Stars this past spring, returning to a childhood passion. “I grew up dancing competitively and being in pageants, and my grandma made all my costumes and dresses. I remember watching the show on the couch with her, and she’d pause the TV to create sketches based off what she saw,” she says. Kordei and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, finished third, which is all the more impressive when you consider that for the first three weeks she flew to the Los Angeles tapings direct from 5H’s Asia tour, popping melatonin on the plane and chugging coffee (a new habit) before doing the cha-cha.

Hernandez recently dropped a summery song with DJ duo Lost Kings and A$AP Ferg. She also clocked a writing session with Christian country-folk singer Cindy Morgan and touts the acting career she plans to launch this year. Hansen has an unreleased RedOne cut featuring Fetty Wap and French Montana, and she loves tennis and jokes about becoming a volleyball star. “I’m at a place where I’m continuing to identify myself,” she says. In other words: find her part in what could become a multidisciplinary 5H empire.

“Last year, we all learned a lesson about mental health and making sure you step away from something. It just makes this stronger,” says Jauregui. “Fifth Harmony is the home base,” offers Kordei, “where we always come back.” “Yasss,” says Hernandez.

Of course, when your break from work is more work, there isn’t much room for, like, life. They all describe their days as a “blur,” and Hansen says she doesn’t know “what vacation means.” For those who keep asking: No, Kordei still hasn’t had a chance to go on that date with DWTS’ Bonner Bolton. And in a quiet moment in the kitchen, Hernandez confesses that there’s nothing she wants more than to get married. But the women don’t even have homes apart from their families – the houses would sit empty.

It was only 14 months ago, in the middle of my interview with the group for its first Billboard cover, that the same four sitting here broke down in tears detailing the extent of their fatigue and stress. “Jesus Christ, dark times,” recalls Jauregui, and they didn’t let up. The same day Cabello’s exit was announced, there was a leak of what seemed to be a recording of Jauregui telling Hernandez the band was treated like “literal slaves.” “I don’t know where that [audio] came from,” says Jauregui, “but that’s what the game does to you sometimes: runs you dry.” But it was a bit more than that.

“We were little girls coming off of a TV show and had a team of people trying to sculpt us into something we weren’t,” says Hansen. “They took advantage, like, ‘Get in there and record this, you thing,’ ” says Jauregui.

“If you’re told you can’t do something when there’s a creative desire to do it, that’s depressing,” says Geri Horner – nee Halliwell, aka Ginger Spice – who just released her first single in 12 years. “Spice Girls always wrote our own stuff, but I can relate to that.”

The long road to liberation began with 5H hiring outspoken music lawyer Dina LaPolt at the end of 2015. “I sat the girls in a hotel conference room and for five hours educated them on trademarks, copyrights and rights of publicity,” says LaPolt, who soon helped secure them new management with the preeminent firm Maverick (Madonna, U2, Miley Cyrus). “Then I educated them about every agreement they signed, which [were] the worst I’ve ever seen in the music business.”

LaPolt successfully transferred the Fifth Harmony trademark from Cowell to the group, meaning the women now own the name, along with the right to control how it is used and to profit from any deals. (The agreement – signed in April 2016, months ahead of Cabello’s exit – doesn’t name Cabello in the “Fifth Harmony Partnership.” “I don’t represent Camila,” is all LaPolt will say.) She then renegotiated 5H’s contract with Epic, which she characterized as “a very adversarial” process.

LaPolt and 5H stress that the group’s relationship with Epic is now good. The women count among their “saviors” the label’s senior vp A&R Chris Anokute, who came onboard near the end of making 7/27. (Reid left Epic in May amid sexual-harassment allegations.) “We raised our voices,” says Hansen, “and to have someone in our corner like Chris, who believes in us, is the most important element to make the wheels go.”

Which allows 5H to meet the challenges of being Women of Pop in the late 20-teens. Rihanna, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez and Lorde have all shown how much artistry, agency and album-building matter. Basically, the band needs to pursue the authenticity Cabello secured by going it alone. The challenge is not only doing that in a group, but also while relying on familiar themes, like girl power, diversity, body positivity and inclusion.

Jauregui is the first to admit she was scared about 5H’s future without Cabello. “We’d put blood, sweat and tears – and birthdays and funerals we missed – into this thing,” she says. “It’s our livelihoods and our families.’ This is the train, and now you’re like, ‘Is the conductor going to come through with the coals, or are we left here to die?’ ”

Hernandez says there were “many therapy sessions.” Hansen, at least, quit worrying when they released their first press photo as a quartet and everyone, including Ellen DeGeneres, started editing themselves into the frame, “trying to recruit themselves into the squad.” Which raises the question: Have they considered bringing in a new member? They answer in unison: “Heeeell naaaw!”

After watching Amy’s epic scene from Sonic booms “Knine to five Knuckles” episode I was like DAMN give this hedgewoman an award or something 😆💖🏆i made this for her lol …Sonic and sticks shoulda totally just let her go so she’d kill em all with that hammer! We love you Amy ,yer a savage ❤️💪

I list of seriously under-rated animated movies that Tumblr needs to scream about as much as The Big Four but don’t for some reason:

Reason: It had an openly gay charector. And did not make him into a stereotype, they made him the complete opposite of a “gay stereotype”.They also taught very important lessons about not sinking down to other peoples’ levels, how scarey it can be to be different, why adults have such a big problem with people who are different, ghosts, witches, zombies, the antagonist is literally the ghost of a little girl who was KILLED FOR BEING A WITCH IN SALEM TIMES AND ALL SHE WANTED WAS A FREIND Tumblr you scream about these themes in movies you want and here they are

External image

Reason: Johnny Depp plays a pet chameleon who is terribly lonely and doesn’t know who he is as a person who ends up stuck in a desert pretending to be a sheriff battling a sharp-shooter snake, that should be reason enough, but it includes Beans, who has a type of panic disorder (yes she’s a lizard and alot of lizards do but the way they made a big deal of it sort of made me think of it more in this term) and the entire story is really centered on finding yourself and that’s precious, plus Johnny Depp plays a lonely lizard do I really need to say anything else?

Ice Age

Reason: Well to begin with Scrat is the living embodiment of someone from Tumblr, as is Sid, it has Dodo Birds who have a fighting style called “Tai Kwan Dodo”, the first movie is about a mammoth, a sloth, and a Sabertooth Tiger taking care of a human baby, it also deals with alot of dark points like the food chain, betrayal, family genocide, neglect/abandonment on Sid’s part, the death of a mother trying to save her baby (well let’s be honest most animated movies have that for some reason) and these themes tend to persist (although not as heavily) in the other three films, paticuarly, the theme of loneliness and forming your own family out of odds and ends because your blood family isn’t healthy (abusive like Deigo’s, neglectfull like Sid’s, dead like Manny’s oops) Deigo is the king of sarcasm and is somehow charming, let’s be honest Ice Age is gold

Reason: Shrek DOES appear on Tumblr more than anything else but mostly as a joke and I don’t understand that because Shrek has all the themes Tumblr cries about wanting in movies/kids movies, non-traditional princesses, non-traditional female leads, non-traditional romances, a princess not conforming to beauty standards and a male-lead her loves her not “despite that” but FOR that, he doesn’t “accept her”, he LOVES her, Shrek himself is the definition of a charector Tumblr should love, anti-social, sarcastic, awkward, passionate about food, and Donkey, the sarcasm machine who had hybrid babies with a dragon (again laughing in the face of traditional gender roles y the way) a cross-dressing wolf, a prince who’s actually a selfish mama’s boy, Puss In Boots- and if you don’t love him I just want to know, WHY?- who has his own spinoff movie with another BAMF, non-traditional female-lead who, instead of having to be a loyal princess, is more of a “I love you but let’s not make a big deal of it so I’ll come around when I come around” bandit in her own right, and although I honestly think the hay-day was the first two movies, the latest one DOES have Fiona as the leader of a rebellion war group…

The Croods

Reason: Besides the explosive humor and adorable animals, it has an amazing female lead, the male lead isn’t just some pretty-boy love interest, he’s actually USEFULL, but I think what I love the most is actually the father role, because he isn’t presented as a clueless push-over, nor a stereotypical “No daughter of mine will __!” type, he actually represents a very accurate portrayal of the difficult to walk line between “I need to protect my family” and “I need to loosen up and let my kids make their own decisions”, he doesn’t do anything out of the “power of being a man” or just wanting his family to do what he says because he’s the leader, he very genuienly is afraid of losing his family because as the days pass the population IS getting thinner and thinner, and like most people, especially most parents, he doesn’t know how to handle that fear without going overboard, it also represents the fear of change without making that in it’s self a joke

The Secret World Of Arrietty

Reason: No animated movie list would be complete without a Ghibli film, but I’m really surprised that Arrietty doesn’t get the same love on Tumblr that Holw’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Ponyo, Spirited Away, and other Ghibli films get, it was almost swept under the rug, besides having a common thread on this list with the female lead being strong and independant and having a great family dynamic, I’m mostly impressed with the male lead, who doesn’t take the typical role of a male protagonist by using strength to overcome his obstacles as much as he uses cleverness, Sho (Shawn in the English dub) has a very strong since of compassion and moral values that isn’t usually there in the beginning of the movie for male protagonists, it’s usually a learned trait, but he’s very understanding to start with of Arrietty’s compromising position and only wants a freind, he also has a heart condition that plays a part in his loneliness in the movie, Arrietty, like many Ghibli movies, also ends with the leads remaining only close freinds and not love interests, as well as with going their own ways but hoping to see eachother again, they do so in a way that leaves the ending still sweet, rather than the usual bitter-sweet feel of these sorts of things, not to mention the breath-taking animation is enough to keep your eyes on the screen even if the sweet story doesn’t interest you

Hotel Transylvania

Reason: With Monster High being the sensation it is, paticuarly on Tumblr, I’m increasingly shocked that Hotel Transylvania hasn’t made a splash, besides the absolutely adorable personality of Mavis- and Dracula makes it easy to see where she got that from- most of the charectors that so much as have speaking roles have some level of amusement to them, Mr. Wolf’s family on it’s own could be a movie as far as I’m concerned, but what really makes me love the movie is the plot, it’s more than the typical vampire/human soul mate romance (although the quirkiness of this one and the awkwardness of Johnathan) it’s more than anything about Dracula, like The Croods it shows the father role as more than the typical “I don’t want my daughter to date because of reasons” thing, it depicts a very justified fear of humans and how the death of his wife pushed his already astoundingly strong love for his daughter into a hyper-drive of overprotectiveness, and it shows that, although he is willing to go to any length to protect her, he very often has a hard time justifying his extreme actions to himself, and unlike most fathers in this sort of plot, he doesn’t just “accept” his daughter’s decisions, he actively seeks to help her get what she wants from them, and if nothing else I’d have thought that the references to cosplayers and Twilight would make Tumblr giggle, but really Dracula wins the Best Dad Ever award

Reason: Following the trends of strong female leads, we have this peice of gold, I would think Beyonce playing a Faery Queen would have put Epic on Tumblr’s radar but apparently not, the animation is stunning, by far one of, if not the, best movie on this list in terms of the animation quality, the charectors are all clever and unique, with a familiar sense of searching for where “home” is and what’s really important in life, it also puts a new spin on the faery/human relationships that we so often see repeats of, it isn’t the classic “Humans hunt faeries but learn their lesson” movie, nor is it quite as innocent as Arrietty, not to mention that the concept of the Queen and the Leaf Men are very unique in their construction

Tinkerbell and Disney Fairies movies

Reason: All I ever see of Tinkerbell (this one atleast) on Tumblr is hate about wishing she was the same amount of sassy and bad attitude that she was in Peter Pan’s world, but two things aren’t being taken into consideration here (and I think the reason for that is that most people on Tumblr don’t bother to see the movies) and those are 1. Tinkerbell DID have alot more attitude in the first two movies, paticuarly the second, and she was very easily riled and very easily frustrated, traits shown in Peter Pan (although I have honestly not watched Peter Pan in yeaaaaars so I don’t remember her from there very well) in Tinkerbell’s second solo movie it was highlighted the most and she also saw just how strong those traits were in her and she decided to change, 2. This PRECEEDS Peter Pan, if I’m not mistaken Pan’s Tinkerbell had been cast out of Pixie Hollow, it would be understandable that Tinkerbell, who already had these qualities in a lower dose, would only increase in frustration and jealousy if she had been an outcast, the thing is, people change, something obviously happened for Tinkerbell to decide to join Peter and leave Pixie Hollow, the Disney Fairy movies don’t demonstrate that, they show her adventures from before she joined Pan, they may eventually show a flittering relationship/meeting between the two but I doubt it, the Fairy movies have alot of classic Disney qualities and speak out most against following rules and conformity, from the first movie when she found herself put down for being a Tinker fairy and wanting to change her talent, to Secret Of The Wings when she meets her fraternal twin sister Periwinkle against the rules of Pixie Hollow, to The Pirate Fairy when the story centers not on Tinkerbell, but on Zerena, who was constantly spoken down to and made to feel unwelcomed just for wanting to experiment with the laws of Pixie Dust, it has a carefully strung balence between “The rules are in place for a reason” and “Sometimes you need to break them and that’s ok” and it’s done quite nicely

Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron

Reason: If I had to pick ONE movie that is the most underrated from this list, it would be Spirit, although it may look like a cute little movie about horses and rebellion, that really isn’t the case, the theme is very strong throughout the movie that the white men fighting against the Lakota tribe were in essence trying to break/imprison them just as much as they were the horses, Spirit is the only movie I know of that shows just how wrong the attack from Europeans on Native Americans was without it being a documentry of some sort, and although I think Disney’s version of Pocahontas TRIED to give off this vibe, I think it did poorly with it and gave a little too much (ok, alot too much) credit to the white men who came in and took everything the native people had,Spirit had none of that, I myself am white, but with some strong Native roots, I may be missing something that someone who’s purely/mostly Native American would find offensive, but as far as I can tell, Spirit does very well at representing the severely underrepresented group of people, and very accurately represented the cruelty of the Europeans, especially during that horrible war, even more than that though, it gave, in my opinion, a representation of Spirit and Little Creek’s relationship without making it corny or stereotyped, honestly, if I get pick any animated movie to get as much reckognition as Frozen does, Spirit would be it, because it isn’t JUST a good movie, JUST gorgeous animation, JUST a cute story… it’s all of those things, but more than anything, it’s a message that DESPERATELY needs to be heard in America, that just keeps getting shushed: Native representation, white power and how wrong it is- and was most especially when the Europeans took over- treating ALL people, as well as animals, with respect, free will, and I could just go on and on…

As much as I love the popular animation on Tumblr, Disney Princesses, Frozen,Rise Of The Guardians, How To Train Your Dragon, Finding Nemo, etc, these movies REALLY need to get out there, they have some important things to say

mycrawft  asked:

Hi! New to the Mendo community after watching him in Rogue One. :) What movies of his do you recommend checking out and why?

Hello and welcome!!!!

the must-sees for new Ben fans (amazing fantastic incredible movies)

  • Mississippi Grind: watch Ben and Ryan Reynolds act their socks off together in this wonderfully intimate and loose character study of a sad, sad gambling addict and his mysterious new boyfriend best friend. Their chemistry is fantastic and Ben’s character is one of the most painfully real I’ve ever seen on screen.
  • Starred Up: a sublime prison movie with forces-of-nature performances from Jack O’Connell and Ben. Very violent and explosive but also very touching and emotional (I highly suggest subtitles).
  • Animal Kingdom: the Australian crime epic that won a shit-ton of awards and catapulted the careers of most of those involved. The whole cast is great and characters extremely well-crafted. If you want to know why Ben’s always playing sketchy people nowadays look no further, he’s terrifying in this.

worth watching just to see Ben steal the show as side characters

  • The Place Beyond the Pines: it’s a decent movie and Ben’s freakin’ fantastic in it. Ryan Gosling’s obsession with him began here, for good reason.
  • Killing Them Softly: your mileage may vary with this one. A crime/gangster story with political/economic allusions, directed by Ben’s best friend Andrew Dominik. Ben plays a really gross low-life heroin addict and he’s phenomenal. If you don’t want to watch the whole thing, at least check out the heroin scene
  • Lost River: you’ll probably be okay with this if you like Nicolas Winding Refn. Even if you aren’t, you get to see Ben sing and dance
  • Slow West: Ben’s distractingly magnificent fur coat aside, it’s a very interesting revisionist Western with some gorgeous cinematography.
  • Black Sea: a solid enough submarine thriller, where Ben’s another weirdly almost-sympathetic scary mofo.

when you’re in deeper you’ll end up looking for these rather obscure but still good Australian films (Ben has lead/major roles in all of them)

  • Amy: Ben has a nice wholesome role in this surprisingly depressing movie about a traumatized deaf girl.
  • The Big Steal and Spotswood: they’re rather typical teen movies but Ben is a baby and cute as **** in both. They’re watchable and fun.
  • Beautiful Kate: the subject matter is off-putting but it’s a very well-acted low-key drama.
  • Cosi: random and kind of weird, but also kinda cute and Ben looks SO GOOD
  • Hunt Angels: a cool and surprisingly engaging little docudrama on Rupert Kathner, an early Aussie filmmaker.
  • Idiot Box: a dark comedy about suburban delinquents that’s probably not going to be to everyone’s tastes, but it’s a fairly iconic part of Ben’s filmography from what I can tell.
  • Metal Skin: strange, nihilistic and unpleasant but young long-haired womanizing Ben is 👌 👌 👌 👌
  • The Year My Voice Broke: Ben’s breakthrough film role at age 17. A melancholic coming-of-age teen movie that pulls no punches, I’m really not joking.

for true Mendo completionists that still have some respect for their own time

  • Black and White: a meh movie with admirable intent and a tiny bit of Ben. It’s okay at best.
  • The Dark Knight Rises: watch it if if you haven’t seen it by now I guess?
  • Secret Men’s Business: it’s an unremarkable made-for-tv movie, but Ben looks great…….. beach and shower scenes……..
  • Quigley Down Under and Sirens: Ben’s barely in these and they’re so-so movies, go for it if you want?
  • Knowing: it’s not the worst thing ever but it’s really not good and Ben gets very little screentime. Nic Cage isn’t that entertaining either.

anything not mentioned here is either terrible, or I just haven’t seen yet so can’t judge. have fun descending into Mendelhell!

Can you even conceive of the magnitude of Kitsowitz’s dumbfuckery?

You are running an aging, dying TV show. You know you have a couple that was, in your show’s glory days, by far the most popular thing you’ve ever offered, and they are portrayed by two incredible actors with incendiary chemistry. (Sure, you’ve backburnered and deconstructed them for the last two seasons, but you’re starting to plot your sixth season with them in a pretty good place. They’re even having a longed-for baby.)

And this couple has a tie-in to an upcoming movie that has every sign of becoming a genuine cultural phenomenon–it’s a high-budget live-action version of an animated classic, starring an adored child star in her first leading adult major film and a guy who participated in driving another cultural phenomenon. It’s going to get SO MUCH PROMOTION for months before it’s even released.

AND! The male half of your couple is concurrently starring as an iconic and unforgettable character in the sequel to a cult classic, helmed by a now universally acclaimed director. Sure, the common audience between the cult classic and your flimsy piece of crap is almost nonexistent, but your actor has a very good chance of being award bait, and the cult classic’s audience now has kids who might watch your show.

Has any TV show in memory been handed such incredible good fortune? Maybe Downton Abbey and/or Sherlock (whose leads were making blockbusters). At best a handful of shows have been remotely as lucky.

So what do you do? Do you make the most of this windfall? Do you put your couple at the forefront of your show in an “epic adventure full of danger and romance”? Do you show them fighting for their child and each other?

Nah. Let’s spend ten episodes destroying both characters in increasingly OOC ways in order to prop a one-note Gary Stu (a Stu who, btw, helped lead your show into the pit it’s in) and let’s have their pregnancy be nothing but misery and horror, leaching away much of the fanbase’s enthusiasm for the baby, culminating in an adult child who’s a odisposable villain given the thankless task of propping the Stu’s codependent relationship.

It’s just …flabbergasting.

How many brain cells have to have shriveled and died for you to consider that a good idea?

Aries - “Don’t forget, brush your teeth before you go to bed. And if you’re driving. don’t forget your car.”

Taurus - Phil’s clothes being stolen, some people take him to an army surplus store, and he wears camo for the next part of the tour.

Gemini - Joe trying to form a supergroup with Duran Duran

Cancer - Robert Plant going undercover and wheeling the boys to the stage in laundry baskets

Leo - ‘The Sav Show’

Virgo - Viv’s first public performance with Leppard at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert

Libra - Joe getting the name of an MTV award wrong CONSTANTLY

Scorpio - Steve and Phil kiss

Sagittarius - Sav and Joe’s rooting for opposing soccer teams

Capricorn - Rick Allen’s epic comeback

Aquarius - Steve as ‘Chef Leppard’

Pisces - The tour manager videos from 1988

Hi! So I'm not a Kehlani troll. Lmao. What's the point of promoting her on a Camren blog??? I'm honestly a CS and big fan of Nikki's blog. Truly sorry if my opinions on Camila's BBMA performance offended you. Not my intention at all! Just offering constructive feedback on what I felt was missing! Saw an amazing live show from Kehlani yesterday and thought it was interesting feedback. Camila is perfect! She's a fantastic singer okay? Just thinking she can polish a few performance things IMHO. 😌

I’m not offended munchkin. Mila is growing everyday as an artist. She will get stronger and her performances will become epic. I remember watching a video of Beyoncé’s first solo performance on the BET awards…not gonna lie it wasnt great…but look at her now. She sits down in a chair on stage and hoes just start passing out and crying. 😩😂😂😂 Mila will get there. She just needs time to grow and develop her own stage persona.

Being invited to the KCAS is exciting enough but being nominated for an award is mind-blowingly awesome. At least, that’s what it feels like.

As you’re sitting nervously in your seat with sweaty palms and nervous breathing you suddenly realise. You’ve got it all.

To your right are your fellow youtubers but to your left are a string of four empty seats. Whoever’s gonna sit there better hurry up and get here, you think to yourself

These anons don't realize that epic is only a small problem they deal only with the music end(producers, songs) It's maverick their management that in charge of their promo and tours!!! It's their job to book them appearances and endorsements. Their the ones who are the problem, not to compare but c has a better team outside of epic, not just roger, she part of the biggest pr firms and talent agencies.. point your frustration at maverick not epic!!! It's their job to promote the girls..

Yup. We can’t blame the big bad epic for this. Maverick is the one who’s supposed to be getting them award show performances, tv appearances, and promoting Down.

Bruno Mars Opens the BET Awards in Epic Fashion, Hilariously Calls Out Fans for Filming Performance

No one brings more 24K Magic into our lives than Bruno Mars and the Hooligans.

The “That’s What I Like” singer won Best Male R&B/Pop Artist at Sunday night’s BET Awards, but not before he and his backing band kicked off the night (take note awards shows, this is a perfect way to start your show) with an impeccably choreographed medley performance.

At two points during the show, the 31-year-old artist put things on pause for some charming crowd work (all right, it was almost definitely a canned bit but it was very fun.) On the second of those pauses, Mars hilariously called out fans filming the show.

Come on, Bruno! They just wanted that social media moment. Mars acknowledged as much, when he said to one fan, “It’s for Instagram, huh?”

Mars, Hooligans, please keep doing your thing forever and ever.

Current sexuality: pics/videos that have been taken/shot in Tom Hiddleston’s flat.

Disclaimer: I can only really guess that these have been taken at his flat (other than the kitchen vid, because he says in the video that it’s his kitchen), and i could very well be wrong. I am just a simple Hiddlestoner, and make no claim at all that I actually know what Tom Hiddleston’s flat looks like. (maybe one day…)

Exhibit C: UNICEF “Packing for Guinea Trip” video, featuring “The Headlamp that Flashes”

Also the pic of him and the Three If By Space award:

and the very round Petri Dish-looking Award ( I cannot for the life of me remember what he won it for):

and let’s not forget The Classic Loki T-Shirt Pic:

Reasons why I love these pics/videos: have you ever seen any other celebrity take pictures or have someone take a video or pic of themselves in their own home that wasn’t for a tv show? I didn’t think so. I LOVE that Tom does this - lets his fans see a tiny piece of himself and his life (and quite frankly, a rather private one at that). Even if it’s just him in front of his kitchen cabinets, or one of the non-descript, aged-looking wooden doors or him standing in a corner with all his stuff laid out on the living room floor before going to Africa for a bit.

It’s HIS place. He doesn’t have to show any part of it to us. But he does. And I think that’s pretty damn cool of him.
Cartoon Network's 'Adventure Time' Ending in 2018

“Cartoon Network just announced the impending series finale of Adventure Time, the sci-fi/fantasy post-apocalyptic musical fairy-tale rom-com coming-of-age sitcom epic starring Jake the Dog and Finn the Human.

In an official statement, Cartoon Network promised the final run of Adventure Time episodes will encompass ‘142 half-hours of content,’ which includes new episodes, miniseries, specials, and some mysterious “more.” (By comparison, the complete run of Game of Thrones so far only represents about 120 half-hours of content.)

Created by Pendleton Ward, Adventure Time premiered in 2010 and became a hit for the network, drawing large audiences and earning a raft of awards. The show garnered critical praise and occupied a unique nexus between hip alt-comedy and Comic-Con friendly geekdom, with guest stars including Marc Maron and Ron Perlman.”

N: Well, since he’s the leader of a boy band he would first teach the kids about leadership, speaking in a way that the children understand. When he finishes that segment of his presentation, he’d then introduce them to the fun part of his job, which would be to teach them a dance, roughly two eight counts to a song really popular children’s song. “So what’s the lesson we learned today? If you see someone steal your animal crackers…*the class* tell the teacher, but don’t do it yourself. *N* Very good!”

Leo: Leo would love going to career day, supporting his offspring and teaching the other children about his awesome job. Well, that is until he gets there and realizes that he actually has to participate. So, he’d sing a really popular children’s song and ask his kid’s class to join him. “What would you all like for me to sing? *The class* Beyonceeeee! No! Selena Gomez! No! Justin Bieber my sister has a picture of him on her wall at home and she kisses it every night. *Clears his throat* How about Old McDonald?”

Ken: Ken would walk in the classroom with the intention of singing for the children, but once he cracks a joke to make sure the kids are awake and paying attention, he’ll turn into Ken the Jokester instead of Ken the cute main vocal due to their interest in his jokes. He’ll have all the kids in stiches; even the teacher and soon he’ll turn into Ken the artist. Lesson of the day: You can be anything and anyone you want to be. “Who wants to hear me sing the Batman song and draw him at the same time? *The class* Yes! Please! *That one kid* I don’t like Batman, I like Iron Man. *Ken* I can draw him, too.”

Ravi: Cool dad vibe engaged. He’s going to make up stuff on the spot because of course he didn’t come prepared, but the kids and not even the teacher would be able to tell the difference. Since he’s a rapper, he’d probably explain to the children the composition side of his career and grab the toy maracas from the shelf and then spit the rap remix version of some nursery rhyme. “*Shake shake* Hey little, little. The cat ate a skittle, the cow jumped over the- *The class* Noooooo! That’s not how it goes. *Ravi* Well course of not. That was a ‘composition’! *The class* Ohhhh.”

HongBin: HongBin is that one parent that’s going to sit there staring at the kids, and have the kids stare back at him because for some reason he forgot everything he rehearsed for the presentation. Once he snaps out of it, he’ll ask the kids what they know about acting, and then give a mini workshop on acting, before asking for volunteers to help him in a little skit. “I need three volunteers! We’re going to act out a scene I like to call, ‘The Lunchroom robbery”. *The class* Ahhhhh! Pick me! Pick me!”

Hyuk: Hyuk would have scoped out the presentations of the other parents before doing his. Why make the kids sit through generally the same presentation? So, he’s going to try to win the Best Dad Award by making his presentation even more epic, which means he’s going to let the children in on his secret…that he’s a superhero. “That’s right. My name Mr. Han Superstar. *The class* You’re not really a superhero! *Hyuk* But, I am. I’m a singing and dancing superhero that makes people all over the world really happy. Plus, I have my own comic book.*Shows the drawings he drew last night* *The class* He really is a superhero! Your dad is so cool.”

TCA 2014

So I finally wrote a thing. It’s not very long and the ending is super cheesy, but it popped into my head so I wrote it down. I dunno. It’s nothing epic, but Z won her style icon award at the TCAs tonight and it’s late and just… yeah. Here ya go.

I’m putting it under my drabbles/answered prompts because it’s pretty much that- drabble. Yay.

A note about twitter

Guys, can we please find our collective chill over the recent spoilers blowing up twitter. I get that it’s sucky for our ship, but ya’ll need to cool it until we know something for sure. Constant overanalysis and speculation over every minute detail is doing far more harm than good at this point in time.

And if it does turn out to be true, who gives an actual fuck? We KNOW that TVD and TO have gone to absolute shit these past few seasons, and that our characters have regressed so much that they’re unrecognisable. Let the Ster0line and Klamille fandoms have their basic ass ships and whatever paltry and OOC endgame the writers can scrape together for their dying shows.

Because let’s be honest, the writers will never be able to do Klaroline like we do. I think we’ve more than proven it for the past few years.

Enjoy Klaroline as it was when the show was actually good, the storylines compelling, and the characters rich and intriguing and full of purpose. Think of all the wonderful people you’ve met because of this amazing fandom, the friends you’ve made.

Guys seriously, even if the worst happens think of all the amazing things this fandom has achieved. Charity drives, gift exchanges, Countless world wide twitter trends. The highly successful Klaroline Awards. The AMAZING Klaroline magazine, Smutmas, AU weeks, fanfiction quotes events, an ENTIRE blog dedicated to spreading positivity amongst the fandom. Think of all of the amazing and epic stories, gifsets, covers, graphics, youtube videos, metas that we write on the daily.

Even if the show runners and writers are so set in their ways and stubborn to the quick, and determined to continue with problematic, shitty, and downright fucking creepy storylines (calaric anyone?), remember that we have celebrated authors and media that are on our side. That counts far more than the fuckery going on behind the scenes on those shows right now.

Prove the assholes that think we should stop shipping Klaroline wrong. Our ship is not dead. It is still alive, for all of the reasons I’ve said above.

I am seriously so grateful to be part of a fandom like this one, and I appreciate each and every one of you. You are welcome in my inbox anytime, that goes for all of you.

Twitter might be fucking lit right now, and things might suck for us, but I’m still not going anywhere, I’m still going to do that writing thing, and I will, as always, go down with this fucking ship if I have to.

You’re more than welcome to join me.

Peace out xx

Meeting Jim and Mayim

Wow guys, What can I say! A dream come true. I can’t say how it came about, However I’m happy to tell you guys what happened.

When I was introduced to Jim, I can’t describe how I felt, He was just so warming and happy. He greeted me, shook my hand and was just a genuine human being. Mayim then came up to me, Being me I just held my hand out to hand shake but nope, She greeted me with a hug. Mayim was so welcoming and very very kind. She told Jim I had written an article for her website, Groknation, Which to me, was incredible. From the first second I felt completely comfortable and relaxed.

We posed for a photo and again I was so taken back that they were both so willing to take photos with me. Jim was just the kindest person. After the photos I thanked him and he rushed off to get home like he does after tapings. I was truly honoured to took the time to stay for those few moments to meet me.

I continued to talk to Mayim for a while, We spoke about the show, About Groknation and she was just so excitable and kind. I showed her my I’m with Mayim T-shirt I was wearing underneath my shirt. And we posed for more photo’s. We hugged goodbye and she wished me luck for my upcoming Surgery and added to come back as soon as I can. I told her she was my hero and inspiration as well, I’m glad I was able to do so :)

They say never meet your hero’s. I did. And do you know what? Im so glad I got to meet mine. They were just so human and kind. I felt I was treated as human being myself. You get nervous and you don’t know what to say.. But with these guys? I felt completely accepted and calm. I’m just a fan, Just a nobody and here I was stood wth these 2 incredible award winning human beings feeling like a human being myself.

It was such an honour, It was such an experience. I will continue to support Jim, Mayim and the Show for a long as I can breath.
