The Duchess of Cambridge carried out her first engagement of the year, attending the National Portrait Gallery’s Gala. The Duchess was wearing a magnificent necklace loaned to her by the Queen - the jewel is known as the Nizam of Hyderabad necklace and was given to Elizabeth II as a wedding gift. The evening raised money for the Gallery’s work to deliver exhibitions and displays and carry out research, with some going towards the acquisition of new portraits. Celebrities such as Alan Rickman, Elizabeth Hurley, photographer David Bailer, Olympian Katherine Grainger, Grayson Perry and Jonathan Yeo also were in attendance. The Duchess made a speech, in which she praised the NPG and its “outreach and research programmes [which] makes it one of the leading centres for the important study into Portraiture.” Kate slightly stumbled upon her lines at the end of her speech.
