National Zoo Panda Tian Tian Gets Checkup For Weight Loss And Sore Shoulder

It’s tough getting old, and that goes as much for giant pandas as people.

Veterinarians at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., say Tian Tian, an adult male panda, received laser treatment and acupuncture for what they initially thought was a touch of arthritis in his left shoulder.

During the exam earlier this week while the 20-year-old Tian Tian (pronounced t-YEN t-YEN) was under anesthesia, vets also took blood and urine samples and performed X-rays.

“Veterinarians did not find anything abnormal, but Tian Tian may be starting to show some changes that are normal for an older bear,” according to the zoo’s website. “The biggest change that the keepers have noticed is that he has lost some weight during the past several months. He weighs 260 pounds, and his weight has been holding steady for the past month. His behavior and appetite are normal, but the panda team wanted to take a closer look as an extra precaution.”

Veterinarians said they also took the opportunity while Tian Tian was under “to perform acupuncture and laser treatment — both are complementary treatments. The acupuncture may help improve some of Tian Tian’s overall muscle tone, and the laser treatment may help suspected arthritis in his left shoulder.”

The Beach City “Filler” episodes are about to pay off.

Here me out just for a minute, One of the biggest complaints in the Steven Universe fandom usually involves the episodes revolving around the beach city residents. As we can see in the trailer for the new Steven Bomb, Homeworld is abducting these very characters. I cant be the only one that got chills when Steven said “Sadie never came home?” and it’s probably because we know Sadie so well. Imagine the shock and emotion we’ll feel seeing Sadie, one of the nicest characters in the show, scared and alone in the Zoo. Basically what I’m saying is: without the “slice of life” episodes, this upcoming arc would have a much lesser impact.

Fort Gibson High School sophomores used historical events of native people being used in human zoos as a way to show “school rivalry”.

This school is Cherokee nation, at a school with a large number of native people, and they mocked the trauma and oppression of native people.

The school principal and superintendent brushed off the issue. I’m tired of white people getting away with this stuff. White people and POC (including natives) with a colonized mindset will always use the excuse “well I’m not offended so you shouldn’t be” as a way to silence racism.

Guess what? Native American oppression is not an accessory.

Things I want to see from Steven Universe:
•White Diamond
•Steven having an actual growth spurt
•Bismuth return/redemption
•AMEDOT
•The shattering of Pink Diamond
•Peridot somehow poofing and reforming with Crystal Gem wear
•All of those Rose Quartz being un-bubbled
•Collecting the Rubies from space and seeing what the hell to do with them
•PEARL CALLING MYSTERY GIRL AND THEM GOING ON A DATE
•Revelation of if gem location is meaningful or random
•Return of the Amethysts and Skinny and Carnelian
•Jasper being healed
•Steven composing a song that will reverse the effects of corruption
•Temple fusion (you know what I mean. Whoever that gem is that their temple is modeled after)
•The inhabitants of the Human Zoo being shown Earth for the first time
•What happens if Steven poofs?
•Honestly just more fusions in general

This show has so many open plot lines it’s amazing. I can’t wait to get more answers. I never want it to end

how to make a kids show dystopia

1. make it colorful

2. slight reference to familiar things

3. appeal to the younger generations underlying but present sense of anxiety about a world plagued by random acts of violence and an overwhelming problem of climate change and pollution. ‘The world is going to end’ is a very present mentality and the colorful optimism of kids-apocalypse assures them that it will still be okay after all that.

4. make it gay.

So for this whole month I haven’t gotten to really sit down and celebrate Halloween, and at the rate things are going, I don’t think I’ll get to do much on the actual holiday either. To make it up to myself, though..well, you see what happened. 4 times. ..With 13 characters.

Anyway; had a huge amount of fun doing these! Don’t count out the chance of another one showing up before the holiday’s over!

Joan Beauchamp Procter: her best friend was a Komodo dragon and if that doesn’t entice you to read this, I don’t know what will

Joan Beauchamp Procter is a scientist every reptile enthusiast should admire.

Joan was an incredibly intelligent young woman who was chronically ill (and as a result of her chronic illness, physically disabled by her early thirties). Her health issues kept her from going to college, but that did not stop her from studying and keeping reptiles. She presented her first paper to the Zoological Society of London at the tender age of nineteen, and the society was so impressed that they hired her to help design their aquarium. In 1923, despite having no formal secondary education and despite being only 26 years old, she was hired as the London Zoo’s curator of reptiles. Now, that in and of itself is an awesome accomplishment, but Joan was absolutely not content to maintain the status quo. Nosiree, by the age of 26 Joan had already kept many exotic pets (including a crocodile!) and knew a thing or two about what needed to be done to improve their lives in captivity. So Joan got together with an architect, Edward Guy Dawber, and designed the world’s first building designed solely for the keeping of reptiles. She had some really, really great ideas. Her first big idea was to make the building differentially heated- different areas and enclosures would have different heat zones, instead of having the whole building heated to one warm temperature. She also set up aquarium lighting- the gallery itself was dark, with dim lights on individual enclosures to make things less stressful for the inhabitants. She also insisted on the use of special glass that didn’t filter out UVB. This meant that reptiles could synthesize vitamin D and prevented cases of MBD in her charges.

But advances in enclosure design weren’t Joan’s only contribution to reptile keeping. She was also one of the first herpetologists to study albinism in snakes- she was the first to publish an identification how albinism manifests in reptile eyes differently than in mammal eyes, and stressed the importance of making accurate color plates of reptiles during life because study specimens often lose pigmentation. She also was really hands-on with many species, including crocodiles, large constrictors, and monitor lizards. Joan had this idea that if you socialize an animal and get it used to handling, then when you need to give it a vet checkup, things tend to go a lot better. This really hadn’t been done with reptiles before. She was able to identify many unstudied diseases, thanks to her patient handling of live specimens, and by being patient and going slow, she managed to get a lot of very large, dangerous creatures to trust her. One of them (that we know of) even came to like her- a Komodo dragon named Sumbawa.

In 1928, two of the first Komodo dragons to be imported to Europe arrived at the London Zoo. One of them, named Sumbawa, came in with a nasty mouth infection. His first several months at the zoo were a steady stream of antibiotics and gentle care, and by the time he’d recovered enough for display, he had come to be tolerant of handling and human interaction. In particular, he seemed to be genuinely fond of Joan. She was their primary caretaker and wrote many of the first popular accounts of Komodo dragon behavior in captivity. While recognizing their lethal capacity, she also wrote about how smart they are and how inquisitive they could be. In her account published in The Wonders of Animal Life, she said that "they could no doubt kill one if they wished, or give a terrible bite" but also that they were “as tame as dogs and even seem to show affection.” To demonstrate this, she would take Sumbawa around on a leash and let zoo visitors interact with him. She would also hand-feed Sumbawa- pigeons and chickens were noted to be favorite food, as were eggs.

Joan died in 1931 at the age of 34. By that time she was Doctor Procter, as the University of Chicago had awarded her an honorary doctorate. Until her death, she still remained active with the Zoological Society of London- and she was still in charge of her beloved reptiles. Towards the end of her life, Joan needed a wheelchair. But that didn’t stop her from hanging out with her giant lizard friend. Sumbawa would walk out in front of the wheelchair or beside it, still on leash- she’d steer him by touching his tail. At her death, she was one of the best-known and respected herpetologists in the world, and her innovative techniques helped shape the future of reptile care.

anonymous asked:

this might be a bit off a topic, but do you remember the first episode with the strawberry fields where we first saw hints on roses fight in the background of the pyramid - with all the new knowledge we now have about homeworld and the diamonds, do you have any new thoughts on it? Or do you think that entire thing will be retconed since they maybe changed things after getting so many seasons?

I actually think about the temple in “Serious Steven” a lot, it was really the first very lore-heavy episode we ever got and it foreshadowed quite a lot about what we’ve since found out. I do not think it’s retconned at all, while the show has definitely become a different beast than what it started as (the crew have said as much) the core storyline has to be the same, or else none of the foreshadowing would work, but so far it has. I see no reason to think that the show isn’t following a storyline set from when it started.

I talked about this originally a very long time ago, back when “Jail Break” first aired (here), but one of the really, really interesting things about the pyramid temple to me is that it appears to be a spaceship or similar Gem structure, due to it’s similarities with Peridot’s ship. The really fascinating thing to me is that the temple contains the revised Diamond Authority symbol, the three triangles one, instead of the four diamonds symbol. It has the very same symbol that’s present on Peridot’s ship

This means that the pyramid was made after Pink Diamond was shattered but before the Diamond’s final attack on Earth. This also means that the temple was, at least originally, Homeworld’s and unless the Crystal Gems commandeered it and altered it, the mural may not the depiction of “Rose Quartz saving Earth/humans,” as we thought, but more of “Rose Quartz shattering Pink Diamond” - meaning, in the mural Rose is the villain. The mural is depicting the (fabricated) events of Pink Diamond’s shattering, perhaps as a motivator to Homeworld forces, or just a way to lament Pink Diamond’s passing. The temple might’ve even been a sort of memorial to Pink Diamond.

Another very interesting thing about this mural is that it’s very explicitly referenced in “The Zoo,” when the humans are crying and pleading for the hurt to be taken away. It’s a very deliberate reference and it’s telling us something about this mural and the events it’s depicting (consider the popular theory that Pink Diamond may’ve sympathized with the rebellion and humanity, in the end at least)

Lastly, I’ll point out one more thing I find really really interesting and that has been an extremely curious thing I’ve thought about for years now. A few years ago, the crew used to post the storyboards for the episodes after they aired. The “Serious Steven” storyboard showed the mural, except it didn’t look quite like the mural we see in the show. Curiously, it does not show Rose Quartz at all. Instead, there’s a different figure. It’s very specific, so it wasn’t a stand-in. We’ve not yet seen a Gem that looks quite like it, but there is one very fascinating thing about it, given recent revelations:

They have a rather distinctly diamond-shaped symbol on their chest.
