What We once were

I truly hope so much that you like this story. It’s based of what was for months my reality.

Plot: Y/N is in love with Harry and doesn’t understand why he cuts her off.

Warnings: Mentions of violent behavior, however not in detail.

Picture isn’t mine which is quite sad.

It was safe to say that I loved him far too much for my own good. Maybe it was the way he looked at me, eyes wide and full of warmth and with a hint of… wonder. He looked at me as though he was the only one who saw me as me, the person I truly was. And yet at the same time I know now that he also always saw me as somebody I couldn’t possibly be. Somebody I didn’t even want to be and now am glad I never became, even if it resulted in costing me him. To this day I think it was this misperception of his that doomed the two of us to fail.

Harry caused me so much unnecessary pain, forced me through a seemingly infinite amount of sleepless nights.

How had I ever made that man to somebody I cared about so deeply? I truly wish I hadn’t.

….Then.
I stumbled into Harry’s life at a time when the both of us felt terribly out of place. He’d befriended a friend of mine and was soon thrown into a new group of friends, one that I happened to be part of a well. Of course he was on good terms with everybody and held the attention of everyone.

It caught me by surprise when Harry and I became friends. I’d expected to be just as much of a bystander in his life as I was in the lives of the other’s but for some reason he made an effort to know me. I let him of course, gladly in fact since I was just as much pulled under his spell as the rest of us were and greedy for any bit of attention he could spare.

Soon I discovered that he was funny, kind and not half as cocky as he always pretended to be. Harry made me happy. It was far too easy to fall in love with him it happened without me even noticing.

….Now.
It would be nice if this story would turn into one of those that end with the two friends looking closely at each other, smile and then realize at the same time that the partner they had been dreaming of had been right there in front of them all along. What’s more beautiful than mindless flirtations turning into true words of love? I’ll say it right now this is definitely not that kind of story. If anything it’s the opposite.

….Then.
“You should come with us,“ Harry suggested one day.

We were queueing for coffee, something we did at least once a week since he’d introduced me to this part of the city where we’d found what was undoubtedly the best cafe ever. I’d somehow hoped he would invite me to the party tonight, but at the same time I dreaded the thought of going.

I bit my lip. “Wouldn’t I be a bit out of place?“

“Next!“ Moving quickly I informed the barista of our orders and payed for them both before following Harry who’d already walked over to the side of the counter where our coffee’s would be served. He smiled when I followed him.

“Rubbish,“ Harry spoke, grinning at me with that smile I thought about far too often when alone, “You’d just stick to my side like you usually do.“

This idea I liked. Harry’s grin widened when I nodded. “Okay.“

“Great!“

Harry squeezed my shoulder before glancing to our right when’re a beautiful young woman came to a stand, checked something on her phone and then moved to sit down at a table near the wall. A sour taste settled on my tongue and I cleared my throat.

“Only so that somebody’s looking after you, which isn’t a piece of cake,“ I  said, smiling when I successfully distracted his attention away form the pretty female and back to me, “Drunk Harry is a pain in the arse I’ll tell you that much.“

Harry shook his head with arched brows. „Watch it love, ’nother comment like that one and m’gonna pinch you.“

“As if you’d dare,“ I laughed, but shrieked and moved away when his fingers reached out to assault my hips. “Ouch! Be nice!“

We waited another minute or two before he thanked the barista with a warm smile while handing me my coffee.

“How much do I owe you?“ he asked, taking a sip from his mug.

“Don’t worry about it. You payed for both of us last time.“

“Oh, so now you can be nice to me, huh?“ Harry playfully nudged my side with his arm and nodded towards the exit, silently asking for us to leave. Well, less asking than demanding it.

My heart sank a little. I’d hoped we would sit down and enjoy our coffees together and through that prolong our time spent alone with one another, but I assumed he already had other plans.

“I’ll pick you up at ten,“ Harry informed me out on the street, his hand a constant warmth at the small of my back. “That way we’ll be an hour later than everybody else and there when the fun really starts.“

I rolled my eyes. “Sure. Whatever you say.“

“That’s the spirit,“ Harry joked, laughing when I glared at him, “I’ll see you then.“

My heart skipped a beat when he leaned in, lips finding my cheek in a lingering kiss before he allowed his arms to wrap around my waist in a tight embrace. The untamable curls of his tickled my neck when he let his face nuzzle my skin momentarily and I giggled in delight, heart thrumming heavily upon hearing him quietly chuckle.

“I’ll see you later,“ I confirmed, more to myself than to him in order to soften the sting of us having to part, “Bye, Harry.“

I squeezed him to me one more time before letting him release me. He stepped back and for a moment I believed to see something change in his eyes. With a final wave he made his way towards the taxi station nearby while I turned to walk to the nearest bus stop.

..

Harry’s hand was holding mine tightly (his doing, not mine), our fingers intertwined and my heart singing. I smiled and let him pull me with him as he went to say hello to all of the people he knew at the bar, which were many. Nobody questioned our interlaced hands and my cheeks warmed at the thought of people not doubting for a moment that I could belong to Harry’s side.
While Harry spoke to one of his friends my eyes scanned the faces of the people around us and to my distaste found the all too familiar and rather attractive features of Cherry, Her evil eyes glared at me briefly before widening upon noticing Harry, her desire for him as clear to see for everybody as her red painted lips were. I shuddered and turned more into Harry’s side, reminding myself that it was me he’d asked to come with him and not her. I didn’t look but I could feel her angered gaze of jealously on my frame. I couldn’t fight the smile pulling at my lips. The next person I was was Jake, a friend, who smiled and raised his hand in a short wave. I waved back. Him I quite liked.

“Y/N!“

Harry’s eyes found mine briefly before he released my hand and let my friend Lucy embrace me so tightly I could hardly breathe.
When she let go again I was immediately forced into a conversation with her and before I could do anything to stop her she pulled me away and out of Harry’s sight.

The night turned out to be fun though, especially when Harry joined me shortly after saying hello to Cherry and only left my side after an hour when our friend Riley suddenly came hurrying towards us, saying that he needed to talk to Harry. I watched him walk away longingly.

“You know,“ Lucy began while biting onto the blue straw of her drink, “he really likes you.“

“We’re best friends,“ I shrugged, turning to her, “He better like me.“

“No, silly,“ Lucy rolled her eyes and nudged my arm, “I mean he fancies you. Maybe not as much as you do him since you’re practically head over heels for that guy, but still. I’m sure if you were to say anything he’d be happy to go out with you.“

With flushed cheeks I looked around us, hoping nobody had heard her words.

“I don’t want to risk anything,“ I confessed quietly, “I’d rather be his friend than be nothing at all. Besides, it’s the guy who has to take the first step, not the girl.“

At that Lucy laughed loudly, her long hair fell over her shoulders and I briefly admired how pretty she was.

“Welcome to the 21st century, Y/N. And don’t you think he already made the first step? Several times, actually? Think about it. He invited you here to come with him. He escorts you home every time you’re out late with us and he constantly calls or texts you. Jake told me the other day that he drove past the two of you when Harry was walking you home and he didn’t dare stop to say Hi, thinking he might otherwise interrupt something.

“Jake is being funny then,“ I replied, ignoring the heavy squeeze my heart gave, “Harry is like that with many girls.“

“But only with you it is real.“

I didn’t reply any further and did my best to change the subject, silently urging my heart to calm down. I wished Lucy’s words were true. I wanted Harry to adore me as much as I adored him.

….Now.
Harry didn’t adore me as much as I adored him. It was about one week after that night that he told Lucy he hated me.
Her expression had been one of pity and I could tell it was hard for her to speak the words, fully aware that they would break my heart, but I’d begged her to tell me what it was I had done to make Harry draw away from me. And that was all she got out of him.
Harry hated me, wanted nothing to do with me and felt as though he had absolutely no place for me in his life anymore.
And while my world shattered at his sudden change of heart, he seemingly stayed unaffected.

“What can I say,“ Lucy recalled his words were, “I guess when one door closes, another one opens.“

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

….Then.
I continued to speak to Lucy and drink, though I made sure not to get drunk so I would be sober should Harry decide to get wasted. I was to keep my word and take care of him, which I didn’t mind at all.

“Can’t believe you’re doing this for him,“ Lucy said, brows arched, “Make sure that he’s actually drunk this time.“

I rolled my eyes, remembering with a foul taste in my mouth when Harry had pretended to be drunk and forced me to drag him home, making me then walk back to my apartment alone and in the middle of the night only to later on reveal that it had all been an act.

“Wanted to see if you were a good friend or not,“ Harry had laughed after humiliating me in front of everybody, “And you passed!“

It hurt me how easily he could play with my feelings for him and I know that I should have left him then. But of course I had instead forgiven Harry without thinking about it twice.

We were interrupted by a guy named Cory. His tall figure loomed over the two of us and he looked very much out of breath. Though he didn’t know me it was my face his eyes instantly found.

“Y/N, right? You need to come with me. Now.“

I was grabbed without further explanation and dragged with such quick steps it was difficult for me to keep up. I was confused and wondered what a guy I didn’t even knew could want from me.

Though when we reached outside I realized it wasn’t Cory who needed something from me, but Jake.

My good and kind friend Jake was crying. His body shook and his face resembled the color of a sheet of paper. The blue of his eyes was swimming in tears and the evident fear in his orbs frightened me. My stomach turned when I noticed how his right cheek shone with a flaming shade of red. I stumbled towards him, heart beating heavily in my chest.

“Jake, what-“

“Y/N. No.“

I flinched at Harry’s rough words and when my surprised eyes met his I froze. With his back stood against the brick wall of the building I hadn’t noticed his presence at first but now that I looked at him not even the dark could hide the heavy movements of his chest, the raw anger in his burning eyes. Instantly my worry was for him.

“Harry? What happened?“

My eyes wandered down and the racing of my heart increased at the sight of his trembling fingers, the knuckles of his hand already swollen.

I moved towards him and reached out for his arm before my brain could catch up. “Oh god, Harry, are you alright?“

Tears threatened to form at the sight of the one I loved in pain. Harry gently squeezed my fingers.

“I’m okay, love, don’t worry. Go. I don’t need you to see this.“ This time his tone was kind.

I turned to look at Jake. He’d shrunk back when I’d moved to stand by Harry’s side instead of his and I noticed how his tears increased, smearing his flaming cheek. I didn’t understand and desperately searched for answers in Harry’s face, but his expression had already hardened again. It was when his dark eyes found Jake’s trembling form that I realized what had happened. There was no kindness in his stare.

I let go of Harry’s hand and stepped back. “Harry, what did you do?“

Jake sobbed, breaking my heart further. I felt tears burn my eyes and roll onto my cheeks before I could stop them and I turned to look at the friend I felt was like my brother. With my entirety shaking I stepped closer and tried to reach for his hand.

“Are you okay?“ It was a stupid question to ask somebody who was so clearly devastated.

Jake nodded.

“Y/N,“ Harry growled form behind me, “Leave him be and go back inside. You have no business here so stay out of it.“

His voice was back to being harsh.

Still I pressed on.

“Did Harry do that?“

I didn’t need Jake’s nod to know the answer to my question.

It wasn’t the first time I’d been a witness to Harry’s short temper. He’d lashed out at people before my eyes more times than I liked to admit, but never before at one of our friends.
Never somebody we cared about.

At first he would always scream and if the person confronted then didn’t step back, Harry would let his muscular physic do the talking.
I’d been so frightened when it had happened for the first time as I before that incident only knew him as a kind, warm and loving guy who did everything he could for his friends. Upon meeting him I wouldn’t have ever believed he’d be the type to solve his problems with physical strength, but over time I’d learned that if you push the false buttons, he could get as angry as a hurricane and destroy everything around him.
Normally he always tried to make sure I didn’t see.

“Oh Jake,“ I cried and moved to hug him.

Harry made a sound like I imagined a wild tiger would right before killing his prey.

“Y/N, I swear to god, go the fuck inside!“

“Stop it, Harry! Can’t you see you’ve done enough?“ I was properly sobbing now, “What the hell were you thinking? You hit Jake!“

“That prick deserved it,“ Harry spoke cruelly, “Didn’t you, you little shit?“

“Hey man, calm down, okay? I think he gets it,“ Cory intervined.

He’d stayed silent until now.

Jake’s swimming orbs found my face. “I’m going home.“

I brushed my hands against the wet skin of my cheeks and nodded. My friend’s scared eyes found the man’s who stood behind me before quietly continuing.

“Come with me.“

“She’s staying, aren’t you, Y/N?“ Harry’s tone was almost mocking, “She came here with me so she stays until I take her home. She doesn’t need you to do that.“

My head hurt and I shook my head. Breathing was difficult.

“Jake,“ I whimpered, “Just go, okay? Text me when you’re home.“

I knew my reply disappointed him but at the same time it was hardly a surprise. Of course I would stand by Harry’s side still. Of course there wasn’t anyone who I would choose over him. Harry knew it, too and grinned at the both of us with an unfamiliar shade of evil in his eyes.

I faintly heard him mumble the words Good girl.

My stomach turned.

“I can go home by myself.“

Jake moved to leave and when I turned to look at Harry his expression had changed from one of anger to one of surprise. I noticed that his eyes were back to their clear green color that wasn’t at all frightening and when I took a step back and out of his reach he frowned.

“Y/N,“ he spoke softly, “C’mon. I’ll take you home later.“

I shook my head. “I want to leave now.“

He sighed. “We’ll leave now, then.“

Once more he reached out to touch me and just like before I flinched away from his touch. The blood on his hand made me sick.

“I said I can go by myself, Harry.“

..

Any other person would have understood.

Of course I couldn’t bear to be in the presence of the male who’d just inflicted such pain and fear on one of my closest friends. It was all too much and I cried on my way home, thankful that the taxi driver didn’t dare asking what the matter was.

Jake texted me that he was fine and though none of what happened was my fault I apologized profoundly for what Harry had done.
But that was it. I didn’t offer to come over and take care of him, in fact I didn’t address the subject at all anymore the moment I found out what had happened.
Apperaantly Jake had run his mouth about something Harry didn’t like and before he’d been able to react or apologize Harry’d already begun to inflict physical pain on him, completely void of any compassion for his friend.

I felt bad, I really did, and though I was angry and upset with Harry, the fear of him resenting me should I side too much with Jake kept me from being a good friend to him.

I picked Harry without even consciously making the choice.

..

When I went to tell Lucy about what happened the night before she said that she already knew. Harry had told her everything after I’d left him standing outside the bar.

“He was pretty pissed at you,“ she said with worried eyes, “Said he doesn’t want to see you anymore.“

I shuddered. “Maybe I should call him. Talk things out.“

But he didn’t pick up. Not the first time I tried and not the fifth either. He didn’t even respond to my messages.

Slowly I could feel myself freak out. We’d had some spats here and there, arguments that had made him shut me out and avoid talking to me, but so far whenever I reached out to apologize he warmed up and welcomed me back at his side.

Only this time I honestly felt like there was nothing for me to apologize for. I wasn’t the one who’d laid hand on Jake, who’d commanded a friend around as though they were my property and I hadn’t been the one to spoil the whole night for everyone.

“Just apologize to him,“ Lucy advised after I’d spent three days with absolutely no word from Harry, “He’s on good terms with Jake again. After letting out his aggression Harry accepted Jake’s effort of making things okay.“

“Good for them,“ I said, genuinely meaning it, “But there is nothing I could apologize for and nothing that I did wrong that night. Harry knows that, too.“

In all honesty I felt as though it was Harry’s turn to apologize to me. So many times before had it been me who’d tried and tried to reach out for him to make things right, often I even let myself down just to please him and that just couldn’t happen again.
I would wait, I decided, wait for him to respond to one of my innocent messages, hoping desperately that this choice wouldn’t cost me him.

But of course that was exactly the price I had to pay for not backing down this time.

….Now.
Harry could be so kind. He was the first person to be there for me when I was in trouble, he always protected me against anything and anyone who made me uneasy and most importantly through him I experienced a never before encountered feeling of being needed.

To him I was important and he appreciated me every day.

At times he was gentle and funny, blushing whenever he managed to make me laugh and his eyes would sparkle so lovingly it made my heart flutter.

He wasn’t all manipulative, arrogant and selfish.

I think Harry liked to think of me as an obedient and kind girl that wasn’t difficult to keep around. And he most certainly knew I was in love with him. So when I chose not to let myself down and apologize for standing up to him he was surprised and angry.
I’d proven his perception of me wrong and this newly discovered girl wasn’t who he had much use to.

….Then.
Never before in my life had I cried so hard. It was like I couldn’t breathe, my chest was crushed under an immense weight and I was robbed of any feeling of comfort. Some nights it got so bad I was hysterical and trashed around in my bed with no hope of finding rest. It felt like I was forcefully ripped open and everything Harry had left in my heart was taken away. Left was a sickening emptiness.

I was devastated.

Harry hadn’t responded to any attempt I’d made at reaching out and after a while I had been forced to give up. So instead I sent Lucy to talk to him and find out what he believed I did wrong only for her to come back with the most awful news.

“Harry was so angry, Y/N,“ Lucy had said, voice quiet and careful, “So much so he acted completely indifferent. He said that you know exactly what you did, that he hates you for it and never wants to see you again.“

She might as well have knocked me out.

Lucy nervously toyed with her hands. “I’m so sorry, Y/N. There really was nothing I could do to calm him.“

..

Hearing that the person you love feels hate towards you is the most intense kind of heart break that can be inflicted upon you by a loved one. Any sense of warmth is sucked out of you, your skin is in a constant state of shudder and your heart might as well not be there. The sickness you may feel before sitting through an important exam or before your first day at a new job, that kind of nerve wrecking sickness doesn’t ever go away again.

Your body is always on alert. Not even sleep brings rest.
It is pure torture to bear a broken heart and it takes so much time until it gets better.

..

The crying didn’t stop and I had no control over it. My eyes began to tear up without me noticing and due to the constant ache in my heart it was difficult to tell when my body was overwhelmed by it. During those times I searched for solitude and refused to spend time with the large group of people I’d once called my friends. Lucy and a small handful of them were the only ones I wanted to be around, anyone else I knew would instantly go and tell Harry about the pitiful state I was in.
And he didn’t need to know how much him leaving me had shattered my entire being.

To my luck the intense pain, confusion and disappointment followed a lot of anger. Like, more anger than I ever knew I was capable of feeling. That helped so much and for the first time I could feel myself slowly getting close to feeling okay again.

Because honestly: How dare he put me aside like I was a used doll to him? How dare he pretend like I wasn’t the best friend he had? How dare he act as if I hadn’t always put him first, before myself even?

I hissed in anger at the mere thought of all the things I’d done for him, every sacrifice, every time I let myself down to please him. If he messed up, I was there to help make things right, if he was upset, I was there to cheer him up. Me, me me. Always Me.
And now what? I had cried at the sight of my friend in pain and that made ma a traitor?

“I’m okay,“ I told Lucy one afternoon after she asked me how I was coping. Five weeks had passed since Harry had stopped talking to me and I was happy to admit that my words were only half a lie.

“That’s good,“ she gave me a small smile before her expression hardened and she looked away. “He asked about you today.“

I almost chocked on my tea. Lucy elaborated: “I ran into him at the cafe he likes so much. He asked where I was going and when I told him he wanted to know how you were doing.“

“What did you say?“ I wondered, my voice much steadier than I expected.

She peered up at me form under her lashes. “That you were good.“

I nodded. “Good.“

“I also asked if I should talk to you and help him make things right again.“ Lucy looked at me expectantly.

With brows arched in surprise I cleared my throat. “You did? What did he say?“

“Nothing he just shook his head. But that’s only because he’s prideful, Y/N, trust me. If you were to call him now I’m certain he would want to talk.“

Slowly I raised the mug I held in both hands to my lips and took a sip. When I looked at her again I knew my slightly puffy eyes were hard.

“Well, I’m not going to.“

“You should,“ Lucy protested, “Put you both out of your misery.“

I shook my head. “He’s the one who acts as if I did the worst possible thing to him when in reality I have done nothing. No, I am definitely not going to crawl back to him like a whipped dog that learned its lesson and damn him if he thinks I will. Maybe he regrets being a dick to me but then it sure as hell means that it’s his turn to come back. After all, he’s the one that left.“

When I finished I was out of breath and my hands trembled.

“I didn’t know you were this angry,“ Lucy admitted, her eyes holding surprise, “I expected you to be happy about these news.“

“Well I’m not,“ I answered, “This is just another stupid test of his and after crying every night for almost a month now I no longer care if I fail it.“

“He told me you were the one who left.“

I gaped at her. “What?“

She shrugged. “In his version of the story you’re the one who backed away form him after what happened to Jake. He thinks you are the one who left.“

Once more my body was set on fire with anger.
“That’s what this is about?“ I cried, “He hates me for not holding the hand he used to beat my friend with?“

Lucy bit her lip, then she nodded.

“Fuck him then,“ I said harshly, “What a self centered prick. I was frightened sick and he is so selfish that me taking a step back and insisting that I needed a moment alone is enough for him to throw us away?“

There was a pause of silence and slowly my breathing calmed again.

Lucy cleared her throat. “Okay, well… it’s your choice. I just know how much you care for him and even after everything he did I’m sure he cares about you just as much. And as your friend I must say that I can’t bear to see you so hurt all the time.“

At that I smiled kindly. “If he cared as much about me as I do for him he wouldn’t be spending all of his time with Cherry at his side.“

Lucy’s face fell. “I didn’t think you knew about that.“

I shrugged. “Hard not to. Her Instagram is full with pictures of them together. Her hugging him, him holding her waist, them dancing. He doesn’t seem to miss me too much.“

“She’s a distraction and has a pretty head that is as empty as a head can be,“ Lucy spoke harshly, “He knows that she is nothing compared to the friendship he had with you.“

I shrugged once more. “He doesn’t seem to mind. And as long as he doesn’t try to come back to me with a solid apology I couldn’t care less if Cherry bores him out of his mind.“

..

Nights were still the worst. That was when my head was haunted by every moment I ever spent with Harry, every laugh we shared, every touch. My poor heart was tortured with the memory of him kissing my cheek, leaving the skin hot and burning. I was reminded of the wide smile he wore whenever he saw me and the look of his arms held open wide for me to step into.

What I found myself missing most though was his smell. I’d grown to love his scent, found it comforting and every night I feared I would forget it one day.

Nights were when I allowed myself to cry and mourn the hope of love I’d lost with him.

I missed laughing with him, because he was still the funniest person I knew. I longed to hear him talk, because he had such a smart mind. I couldn’t bear to think that I would never get to feel his arms around me again and it hurt to imagine that I would never have his protection again.

After giving him so much importance in my life it was difficult to cope without him. But I did. And after two months of no word of him, it truly was no longer a lie when I said that I was feeling good.

..

It was almost like he knew that my heard had mended and I believed he understood that as his cue to come back and fuck me up again.
I stared at my phone with shock. I had one missed call from Harry and four new texts.

Hey.

How are you?

Can we talk?

Sorry.

Almost three months. That was how long he’d waited to reach out again. More than 40 nights of crying, more than 30 days of feeling like I was only a shell of myself.
And all I got was a Hey. How are you? Can we talk? Sorry.
A ‘Sorry’ was all that my pain was worth.

„Fuck you, Harry,“ I muttered.

I reached for the device sitting before me, unlocked the screen and pressed onto the message until the small window popped up.

Are you sure you want to delete this chat? My phone asked.

I didn’t hesitate to press yes.

….Now.
To this day I knew that there was nobody I loved as deeply as I did Harry.

Even after doing everything in his power to break my heart, I can’t help the small jump out of rhythm and the tiny squeeze it gives whenever I happen to see his face somewhere. So many years have past and both of our lives are so different now.

We don’t speak. We don’t reach out.

But his stare lingers when he sees my face and so does mine. It’s as if we’re both reminded of who we once were and for a moment we wonder what we’ve become.

“stuck spending the evening with Terrible Relatives. send me cute…”

Jack and terrible flirting. He doesn’t know the effect it has on poor Bits

a/n: this took an unexpected turn, but i hope you like!

Bitty should have known better than to investigate the strangled shouts coming from the kitchen, but he was procrastinating on a paper and had run out of excuses not to start working. It was probably just Ransom and Holster, who’d then beg Bitty to make them bagel bites — “You’re the only one who can make them without burning them. You’re an oven whisperer!” — and then at that point he’d feel obligated to stick around and listen to their antics while the bagel bites cooked. It was foolproof.

Who: KJ Apa
Quote: I turned out liking you a lot more than I originally planned.

[Y/N] playfully rolled her eyes as she walked past KJ and Cole repeatedly singing her name. Jumping over the back of the couch of the school lounge room set, she nestled next to Lili and Camila.

Lili looked over her shoulder, smirking as KJ pouted that [Y/N] ignored him. Turning back around, she bumped into her shoulder. “Girl, he’s hooked.”

Scoffing, [Y/N] shook her head. “I think you’re delirious.”

Camila spoke up, snorting. “No, you’re delirious if you can’t see it.”

“KJ doesn’t like me,” [Y/N] said sternly, cocking a brow at the two girls she would consider her best friends. It had been a complete and total whirlwind since she joined the Riverdale cast and she appreciated everyone who welcomed her into warm arms. “He’s just being KJ.”

Camila leaned back onto the couch, smirking. “I mean normally yes we’d agree but come on, [Y/N]. KJ has been up your butt since day one. Borderline obsessed, borderline a mess.”

Lili agreed, “KJ’s friendly but not that friendly.” Scrolling through his Instagram she pulled up a picture that he had posted a few days ago of himself and [Y/N] at a cute little cafe the group of them had gone to for lunch. “I’m quoting this word for word since you’re a grandma and haven’t made an Instagram yet.” She rolled her eyes but it was clear by her laugh that it was not meant to be taken any other way but playfully. Clearing her throat, she started to read, “’Friends are great to have, especially ones that are this pretty’” Looking at [Y/N], she quirked a brow with that famous Lili smirk across her lips, “And I should mention the amount of heart shaped eyes emoji’s he put after that is a little excessive but I’m not judging.”

[Y/N] squinted her eyes, gently taking Lili’s phone from her hands, she needed to see it for herself. Chewing on her lip, she looked up at Lili and Camila’s smug faces. “KJ thinks all of us are pretty, you know that.”

Camila groaned while she too rolled her eyes. “Okay, give me a second.” Quickly searching through KJ’s twitter, she pulled up a boomerang video of KJ videoing [Y/N] up close with the flash on while she rolled her eyes and smiled. “I do believe this caption states, ‘Those eyes and smile though’ and look, another excessive amount of heart shaped eye emoji.”

Standing up, [Y/N] gave them a slightly stern look. “I promise you, he doesn’t like me.”

“And we promise you, he does.” Camila countered. “Big time, too. We’ve been with KJ long enough to know that he’s got the love bug bad.”

“Real bad.” Lili chimed in, smirking.

Camila crossed her legs, blinking a million times. “You also can’t argue with the fans either. They ship you two a lot. I’ve seen some really cute tribute videos.”

Lili nodded, looking over at Camila she pointed randomly. “Oh yeah! I really like the one where they used that super cute James Arthur song-”

“-you two are mental.” [Y/N] shook her head and walked away. Walking over towards the table where they had coffee and snacks set up for everyone. She poured herself a coffee and about had a heart attack when she heard KJ say her name from behind her. “Jesus!”

“Oh, shit. I didn’t mean to scare you!” KJ placed a warm hand on her shoulder, his face completely apologetic.

Chuckling, she took a deep breath and shrugged. “It’s okay, but damn, you need some bells or something.”

Taking his hand off of her shoulder, he ran it through his hair. “Yeah, ha, I’ll get on that.” KJ bit his lip, “So, uh, want to go grab lunch or something?”

“Sure,” empty a few sugar packets into her cup, she looked at him sideways, “are they coming too?”

“Oh, uh, well, uh.” KJ stumbled over his words, something he usually never did.

Raising a brow, [Y/N] looked at him with a confused look. “You okay, KJ? You’re acting a bit strange.”

“Yeah, I’m fine, great actually….” KJ closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, he had rehearsed this ten times better in his head. Taking a deep breath, he finally opened his eyes and went for it. “Okay, listen. So, uh, I turned out liking you a lot more than I originally planned and I’ve been trying really hard to ignore these feelings but you make it so damn hard. I love our friendship and it’s something that I will cherish forever but I have to know if you feel the same or at least somewhat because I can work with the somewhat and if you don’t, I just hope I didn’t ruin us being friends-”

“-KJ,” [Y/N] interrupted, shaking her head while smiling. “Slow down.” Using her free hand, she grabbed his arm gently. “I like you too.”

“What? Really? You do? That’s great, I mean.” He cleared his throat and tried to act nonchalant.

[Y/N] was about to respond but she could see Lili and Camila behind him giving her their smug smirks and quirked brows. Narrowing her eyes at them, she had to fight back a laugh when they both turned on their heel and scurried in the other direction.

KJ noticing that she was looking at something behind, turned slightly just in time to see his friends running off. “What was that about?”

Returning her attention, she shook her head. “Nothing, um, did you say something about lunch?”

Smiling, he nodded. “Yeah, do you want to get some?”

“You spoke the magic words.” [Y/N] mimicked his smile and motioned for him to lead the way. “After you.”

Nice, the power is finally back on in my house so I can post this ;7;

Seventeen Reaction to: Taking A Bath With You

some smuttiness ahead, you have been warned! ~

S.Coups: Not even shy about checking you out. His eyes bore into you, drinking in every inch of your body while you’re madly scrubbing away dead skin cells with a loofah. “Babe, you look so good right now.”

You scrub his hair while he talks about his day, then it’s your turn, getting to vent as he massages sweet smelling shampoo into your hair (Or just gives a scalp massage if you have no hair). Not only do you get to spend time together but if you have hair, it is now luxurious and glossy.

Summary: Bucky meets a sassy barista

Word Count: 1809

A/N: no one requested this but i wanted to do something else w the coffee shop au!/ story line idk

Pairings: bucky x reader

Fuck, this is the longest day ever, you complained to yourself as you foamed the milk for the thousandth time for the thousandth latte of the day. Your thoughts were interrupted by an angry customer yelling ‘why are you taking so long!’ Your grip on the cup tightened before loosening it up and turning around to face the person.

“We’re almost done,” your friend muttered next to you before you took a deep breath and plastered a fake smile on your face along with a fake apology for taking up their time. Returning back to the register you call up the next person, grabbing an empty plastic cup and the black sharpie, ready to jot down their order -Venti Iced Skinny Hazelnut Macchiato, Sugar- Free Syrup, Extra Shot, Light Ice, No whip.

Ignoring the pretentiousness of the order you couldn’t help let out a huff at the ridiculously long list of instructions, but nonetheless you created the order, mentally cursing at those who decided to create fancy names for coffees. You tried to not scoff when you yelled, “Bucky, your order is ready!” while setting the drink on the counter in front of you. What kind of a name is Bucky, you wondered.

“Did you follow the instructions?” A quiet but raspy voice asked as a hand reached for the drink.

“Yes. I do know how to do my job,” you replied without looking up at the customer as you cleaned your station.

“Wow, employees really changed since I last came around,” the voice said and you could practically hear the smirk that was on the man’s face. You dropped your wash cloth on the counter rather dramatically, ready to give a whole speech to the stranger but when you looked up you couldn’t help but be in awe of him. The man named Bucky was wearing a red henley that showed off his muscles perfectly along with low riding running shorts and shoes. His brown fluffy chocolate colored hair fell gracefully to his shoulders and framed his face, exaggerating the blueness of his eyes, a juxtaposition to his rigid look.

“See something you like?” Bucky said with a shit-eating grin, raising an eyebrow at you.

“I- I don’t know what you’re talking about,” you replied, ducking your head in hopes that the stranger doesn’t see you blush.

“Right, okay. I’ll see you tomorrow macchiato girl,” he said, raising his drink while he winked at you before taking his first sip and letting out a satisfied sigh.

First Impressions Are Overrated by  Leslie_Knope | 14.6K

In Stiles’ defense, he didn’t deliberately ram his grocery cart into the (evidently precarious) pyramid of oranges.

Tell Me No More Lies by  TroubleIWant | 4.9K

Derek had sworn to serve the revolution against Queen Katherine knowing full well that the cost of such treason could be dear. He’d thought he was ready to sacrifice anything for freedom… But he wasn’t counting on the sacrifice being his marriage to Stiles.

Help Wanted (But Not Really) by  reillyblack | 20.5K

“Stiles, I’ll clear up your confusion about the position. Derek here needs someone to live with him. He’s a difficult person to live with, so I won’t sugarcoat that. But his responsibilities at the company right now make it impossible for him to actually take care of himself and his home. That would be your job,” Laura explained.

Both Stiles and Derek objected at the same time.

Millstone by  eleanor_lavish | 31.3K

Derek waits until the door is shut behind him before he turns around. He holds out his hand, plants his ‘if you’re not weird about it, I won’t be’ smile on his face and says, “Nice to meet you, Stiles. I’m Michael. What kind of a good time are you looking for tonight?”

Hide by  dr_girlfriend | 12.4K

Stiles has been rejected so many times that it doesn’t really surprise him when it happens again. Hurts, yeah, because dammit — he’d thought Derek was the one. Heartbreak sucks, and he’s not so sure he’s going to get over it this time.

Misinterpret Me Like Lolita by  KuriKuri | 10.9K

“You don’t even know the course name?” Derek growls after the guy blushes and stutters out an answer, because, Jesus, he thought the university had standards.

And it sounds like the course the guy is describing is his. Isn’t it just his lucky day? No breakfast and another student who doesn’t give a shit about the course material.

This class is going to be hell – he’s calling it now.

Wishful Thinking by  Inell | 2.6K

Stiles needs to learn how to think before he speaks so he doesn’t risk ruining a wonderful friendship with Derek due to his stupid feelings.

The Payoff Pitch by  Leslie_Knope | 83.9K

Derek is on the cusp of his second season with the LA Dodgers, and as the reigning runner-up Rookie of the Year, the pressure’s on him to become the team’s star pitcher and lead them to the playoffs for the first time in five years. He’s trying to deal with the burden of expectations and really has zero desire to spend any extra time or energy on anything that isn’t baseball.

But then he meets Stiles.

Word By Word by  Cobrilee | 11.8K

The first time Derek sees the words, he’s had a really shitty day. Laura was on his case again, all in the name of sisterly love, of course, and Cora was wielding her usual acerbic wit like a rapier. He’d gotten to the scene of a shooting too late and the victim had died before Derek could call for an ambulance. His Camaro had gotten a flat and while he was attempting to change the tire on the side of the road, someone drove by and sent a wave of muddy water arcing, drenching him, and he was cold, muddy, and miserable.

Then, as he was sliding into the front seat after toweling off as best as he could, he felt something prickling on his arm and glanced down. Shaky, thin lines began appearing, little by little, and he could do no more than stare as the infamous phrase formed on his arm.

Are you 18?

Sundae Mornings by  raisesomehale | 5.4K

“Derek had had his doubts when Cora first suggested their family play host to a foreign exchange student from Poland, but it wasn’t until the kid arrived that Derek really began to resent the entire program.

Sure, Stiles Stilinski cleans up after himself – never not a perfect gentleman around the house – and gets straight A’s while still somehow managing to make friends insanely fast. But he’s also cocky and sarcastic; quick witted in a way that can tangle Derek into a neat, flustered little bow with only a few choice quips.

The worst part is that English isn’t even Stiles’ native tongue, and he still manages to be better with it than Derek. Bested at his own damn language.”

Semblance of Hope by  Dexterous_Sinistrous | 14.8K

“Have a drink,” John offered, looking over Derek’s shoulder at the bar. “I know that a certain someone would be happy to see you again.”

Derek turned to look over his shoulder, catching sight of a familiar head of messy hair, pale skin, and moles. The exact person he wanted to see behind the bar.

Stiles.

It had been almost five years since Derek saw Stiles, remembering the last night he saw him. How much of a coward he had been, sneaking out of the room before Stiles could wake. He wasn’t any good—for anyone.

And he knew, more than anything, he didn’t deserve Stiles.

Full On Rainstorm by  BarlowGirl | 10.5K

He catches Derek by the arm and Derek lets himself be turned, surprised when Stiles shoves a small box into his hands. “I don’t know if you still celebrate it or what but… I wanted you to know someone was thinking about you. Happy birthday.”

Then he squeezes Derek’s arm and bolts, gone before Derek can think to stop him.

He opens the box standing there, only to find one singular, misshapen, sloppily-frosted, cupcake, with a candle in the box next to it. It’s kind of squished despite the paper towel all around it to keep it from banging around in the box.

Derek has to take a moment to sit down because yeah, he can’t deny it anymore.

He’s gone on Stiles.

A/N: Okay so warning this has smut also I started this at 4:30pm and now it’s 4:24am like this looks like it was done in one second

Harry always made sure everything in his life was how he preferred it. If he wanted something he got it, if he wanted certain things changed they were changed in a heartbeat. Now, Harry wasn’t cocky about it this was just something he had grown accustom to, so getting what ever he wanted came like second nature. Although it wasn’t just him getting “special treatment” he made sure his family always had what they needed in a matter of seconds.

The only thing Harry actually wanted was someone to be with, share his thoughts with, and put his love into. Don’t get me wrong, Harry put his life and soul into his music no questions asked but he just wanted someone  that could share their feelings with him and every thought they had ever come across. And that’s where you came along, well in Harry’s book. When Harry first saw you it was at a smoothie place near his house. You were ordering a Groovy Goji with a grilled chicken wrap.

Harry didn’t know what attracted him to you he didn’t think it was your face seeing half of it were covered by Hangover styled Aviators. Maybe it was your voice, while it did sound beautiful it was the perfect mix of nasally, soft, and filled with confidence. The only words he heard there ‘goji’ 'also’ 'chicken’ since the strong wind was impairing most of his hearing. Goji and chicken sounded great to Harry but that wasn’t it either. So Harry decided it was the way you carried yourself, you stood tall and determined not to mention the natural glow you had.

Harry quickly ordered his food and sat at the table in front of you hoping to catch a glimpse of your face. A little after you both got settled you took off your sunglasses and he finally saw your full face. Harry was completely floored, it was obvious your beauty wasn’t the reason you attracted him but it was just a little bonus to finally see your face. Harry sipped on his antioxidant smoothie and tried to get a your attention buy dropping things and and coughing very loudly but you never made an effort to look up. Harry grow frustrated very quickly, everyone in the damned store looked at him with the “Oh my gosh it’s the Harry Styles” but the one girl he wanted wouldn’t even glance at him.

As said before Harry always got what he wanted, right now Harry wanted this girl to notice him and he got none of that. A hour passed of Harry ordering numerous drinks and still no contact from this girl. When he almost gave up the girl closed her laptop, shoved it in her bag and walked toward the door.

“See you again Y/N” the barista called out behind her. So that was her name it most definitely fit her face. Now Harry had a name and a face but he still seeked more. It was obvious he could have came back tomorrow and seen you, the barista’s words as evidence, but that just wasn’t enough. So the only thing that made sense to Harry was to follow you yes full on stalker follow you.

Harry made sure you were out of sight of the shop windows before towing after you. He pressed in his mind which direction you were going he all so made sure he was a good ten feet behind you at all times. While in this pursuit of you he’s learned a lot if things, everyone and he means everyone knew who were he watched as you received “Hi Y/N!” “Hello love, how are ya?” You replied with smiles, waves, and answers to those question. This whole ordeal made Harry more curious as to who you are. As he pondered who you might be he didn’t notice you stopped and turned to face him, causing Harry to crash into you.

“Okay listen here mister, I let it slide when you stared at me back at the shop even when you followed me for two blocks. But now you’re just being creepy so can you just please leave me alone?”

Harry’s heart dropped down to his stomach, blinded by the thought of this girl he completely forgot right and wrong. For god’s sake he had followed this poor girl. “ ’M so sorry. I didn’t mean ta freak yeh out I just wanted to talk to yeh.” Harry explained. “Mmm really? Ever tried 'Hey wanna talk’?”

“I’m sorry. Can I please make it up to you? I just wanna talk to yeh a bit. Maybe over a goji berry smoothie?” Harry proposed, hoping for a positive response.

“Nope sorry I’m allergic” with that she turned on her heel and kept walking down the street. Harry had properly blew it and he was more than frustrated. On his walk home he thought about what he could do to try and make the situation better. The last thing Harry wanted to do was leave a bad taste in your mouth, that’s when he thought about the barista’s words “See you again Y/N!”

Harry woke up the next day with a plan already in his head, it wasn’t that elaborate but it was a start. He woke up and put on his best outfit, with the help of his sister, and walked to the shop that got him in the mess in the first place. Harry ordered his antioxidant smoothie and a sandwich for himself with a groovy goji and a grilled chicken wrap for Y/N. Merely minutes later you walked in  “Hey! Over here.” Harry called. You looked in the direction of the voice, once you saw who it was you tried to leave immediately, but Harry was too fast. “Please jus sit down with meh so we can talk.”

“No, I don’t talk to people like you.”

Harry has never gotten that response before when he asked to talk to someone. This girl really put up a challenge but that just enticed him more. “Just because ’m famous doesn’t mean ’m stuck up if tha’s what yeh think”

Y/N looked up at Harry with dulled slow blinking eyes. “Famous?” she chuckled “ When I said people like you I meant creepy, if we’re being honest here I have no idea who you are.” Now that was a huge blow to Harry’s ego, not only did she not know him, she called him creepy. “Yeh don’t know who I am? ’M Harry Styles I’m from the band One Direction well I’m doing my own thing for the time being but.”

Y/N racked her brain for 'Harry Styles' or 'One Direction’ but nothing came up. Of course Y/N didn’t live under a rock she always knew the latest songs and Netflix TV shows but she had never heard of Harry and his band. Now she was being pursued by this hot shot since yesterday that she hasn’t heard of mainly because their prime years were covered by her emo phase which left no room for boy bands. Since My Chemical Romance and One Direction didn’t mesh well on a playlist she was left completely clueless “Yeah dude, I don’t know who you are.” Harry sighed but maybe this was a good thing, since Y/N didn’t know him she may not associate him with the womanizer image that didn’t represent him at all. “Okay well maybe we could chat about it ovar some food and such?”

Y/N thought about it, if this guy really was a creep she could rely on the employees to save her since she’s on a first name basis with all of them and even texts a few of the baristas from time to time. There was no doubt his name held weight because yesterday everyone flocked to him as soon as they walked in. At first she just thought he was a local like her self but some people asked for pictures and autographs, she thought that was odd but the letter she was writing to her brother overseas was way more important than some pretty boy local.

After a long sigh Y/N says “I guess so.” with a smile that made Harry’s heart flutter. Harry lead you to the table where your food was set up “ I got what I heard you order yesterday. That’s not really helping the creep case but.” Harry said while he sat her down and pushed her chair into the table. “Yeah no it’s fine, really sweet actually.”

Harry and Y/N talked about a lot first was about his first band and his experience on the X Factor. Harry’s talk lead more into One Direction and the great times he’s had with all four guys and even giving Y/N insight on some of the worst. Then Harry let Y/N have the spotlight where she talked about her upbringing. She told Harry just about every embarrassing story in her life because that’s what made him laugh the most. Y/N and Harry talked the whole entire day, in fact they didn’t even notice until one of the employees told them the place was closing.

They walked outside the shop to bid a goodbye to one another but they both didn’t want the night to end so Harry had an idea “Come ovar my place for a bit? We could talk some more.” Harry leaned his forehead on to hers and intertwined their fingers.

“Yeah”

Harry and Y/N walked back to his house, they talked some more about TV shows Harry spewed out his favorite in a heartbeat since he barely watched TV but he always had a few he tuned to immediately. Y/N however recommend every show on HGTV like Flip or Flop and Vintage Flip just to name a few. Harry never heard of these shows but seeing the excitement in her eyes made him want to watch them more so they agreed to watch it when they got to his place.

They got to his place in a matter of minutes he ushered her in just incase any paps were waiting to catch a glimpse of him.“So this is my place, it’s not much but I call it home.” This place looked beautiful to Y/N different art pieces decorated the white walls, different crystals sat on side tables each were different in shapes and sizes but were all connected by a common color of red. The living room and a color plan of yellow, black, and red it was weird but Harry made it work. The two walked to his couch and took a seat “Now show me this House Hunters you go on about.”

After about four episodes and Harry yelling at the wifes when they complained about the light fixtures our the shower head, the two found themselves cuddling on his couch. Y/N lifted her self from his chest to get to his face “H, calm down show’s fake anyways she’s just bitchin’ for no reason.” Harry looked up at her, her eyes were glazed over and her hair was a hot mess because Harry ran his fingers through her hair, getting it tangled, but she looked absolutely adorable. “It is? Tha’s upsetting.”

Y/N chuckled and started to ramble about something but Harry was too focused on her lips, they were puffy and looked so soft Harry couldn’t help himself. Harry reached up to capture her lips Y/N was caught off guard but it felt right and she quickly melted into the kiss. This wasn’t the 'sparks are flying’ 'fireworks in my stomach’ type of kisses because those just didn’t happen, but this was the best kiss Y/N has ever had in her life no doubt. Push came to shove and they’re in his living room making out like horny teenagers.Y/N was the one to break the kiss “Can we, I don’t know. Go to your room or something?” she said gasping for air

Harry didn’t hesitate before he lifted Y/N up and wrapped her thighs around him. He ran upstairs and dropped Y/N on the bed before crawling over her. “So beautiful love, jus’ layin’ here fo’ meh.” Harry kissed her cheek trailing down to her jawline then neck. Y/N started to moan when he sucked a sweet spot under her ear. “Oh babe that feels amazing!” she moaned and grabbed a hold of his hair. Her moans ignited something in Harry that caused him to rut his cock on her thigh.

Harry made sure he had two beautifully colored marks on her neck and collar bone before continuing. He lifted the bottom of her shirt to under her breast. Harry kissed, sucked, and kitten licked her lower stomach. Different profanities including fuck and shit leaving her mouth her skirt created no barrier as Harry continued his assault while rubbing her panty clad clit. Y/N took her shirt off and massaged her breast through her bra “Fuck Harry do something please I need you!”

Harry decided to give her what she wanted, he reached up to undo the clasps on her bra and slid it off her arms. “You’re such a fooken sight to see petal. Your tits are so perfect, let me get us situated then I’ll get back to those, okay beautiful?” Harry went down to her lower region he pulled down the zipper on her skirt and slid them down her legs. Then Harry leaned in to place a kiss her her clit he licked and sucked as much as he could seeing she still had underwear on. “Sweetheart, these little thongs yeh have on are so beautiful pet, bet they make ya ass look incredible. In fact turn around and let me see it babe.”

Y/N whined “Baby please I just want you in me please H I’ll do anything!”

“Love when I say do something, yeh do it. I don’t wanna spank that pretty ass red. But I will.”

Y/N groaned but turned around on her stomach. “Christ sweetheart I was right.” Y/N’s ass was beautiful it was the perfect size for Harry her ass turned Harry’s semi hard straight into a raging hard on. He dove into her ass, Harry licked and kissed under her left ass cheek while the right hand grabbed onto her other ass cheek. Y/N never thought someone paying this much attention to her ass would feel so good but now that it’s happened she doesn’t want to have sex again if it didn’t include this part. Most of her moans were muffled by Harry’s pillows but they both knew how aroused she was especially Harry since he could smell her dipping in between her legs.

“Sweetheart, yeh smell absolutely wonderful take off those pretty panties fo’ meh.” While Y/N took care of that, Harry quickly stripped out of his clothes, leaving his cock angry red and throbbing. Harry laid down between her spread legs as she still laid. Harry spread her pussy lips apart and blew cold air on her opening. “Har baby that feels so good, you’re doing me so good but please baby fuck me.”

“In a second love.” Harry tongued her entrance. He took his time while he ate her out he’d smack her ass a few times just to watch it bounce luckily it turned her on so it was a win-win. After Harry ate her to the verge of tears “Harry baby I’m gonna cum I’m so close babe I’m right there jus- Harry!”

“Yeh aren’t cummin’ 'till I’m deep inside you pet. But I got one more thing to do.” Harry flipped her over to see her face, her face was flushed she she was sweating, not to mention the tears going down her face. Harry cooed and wiped her tears away “I’ll let you cum in a second pet, just let me play with those pretty tits first.” Harry leaned up to circle his tongue around her nipples, making them hard. He took her pointed nipples in between his teeth and tugged on them. Y/N wanted him to fuck her so bad but this felt almost as good almost. “Harry please fuck me!”

“Okay love I gotcha. Hand meh a condom outta that drawer.” after Harry got the condom on he rubbed the head of his cock on her slit. He got whines in return from Y/N so he finally thrusted in. “Fuck Harry! You’re so big my gosh fuck me baby” The words coming from her mouth made him thrust faster, her cunt was heavenly around his cock since he had a condom on he couldn’t feel everything he’d like but he still felt on top of the world inside of her. Harry held her legs at his hips then reached down to capture this girls lips. Harry got his deepest and thrusted his hardest into Y/N and he could cum at any second. “Harry please I’m almost there!” that’s all he needed before reaching down to rub her clit. That’s what pushed her over the edged, Y/N came on his cock “Tha’s it baby cum all over Daddy’s cock I got you pet I’m right here.”

Y/N’s climax crashed down on her while Harry’s followed shortly after. Harry laid down beside his lover. “Stay tha night, I’ll make you breakfast in the morning and maybe we can have a round two.” Y/N obviously didn’t need to think twice about this offer. “Okay but next time I want to be in charge.”

“I think we can work sum out.”

Noisy resort neighbor gets his secret spilled.

(warning: long story)

Happened a few days ago.

My wife and I decided to go to Southern California for the holidays. We found ourselves a nice resort and checked in. All was well until we noticed that the walls in our room were very thin. As we entered our room we could hear our next door neighbor talking and having an argument with his girlfriend (we shared one common wall with them). They were shouting pretty loud and we could hear everything through the wall. We’ll refer to this guy as Noisy Neighbor (NN). NN kept fighting with his girlfriend about something she said earlier. We didn’t follow, wasn’t interested and decided to go eat and explore around the town we were in.

We came back around 10 at night and all was quiet. We figured that NN and his girlfriend already went to bed so we went to bed as well. Turns out he was out.

But maybe every time you hit the reblog or the like button, your brain is whispering “this isn’t about you” and “yes people can do amazing things, but not you” and “ah yes amazing stories, too bad it will never happen to you” and you listen to these whisperings and you laugh and shake your head…

Because you know exactly where you stand: worthless. irredeemable. a loser. a lost cause.

Please.

Please.

Listen to me.

As your friend.

As a stranger who doesn’t know you. Who doesn’t have to know you, or your failings, or your depression, or your anxiety, or your embarrassments, or your deepest darkest most heinous crimes.

Stop.

Just stop.

Look up. Look around you. Open. Your. Eyes. Are they open? Good. Keep them open. Don’t ever close them again. See the world. See you: a human being, valid, flawed, journeying, changing, growing, scraping, failing, rising, a masterpiece that will never be made again.

You are beautiful. You who think you are overweight and lazy. You are beautiful. You who think you are stupid and uneducated. You are beautiful. You who think you are a loser, and amount to nothing. You are beautiful. You who bleed and ache and never rest. You are beautiful.

You have worth.

Want to know a secret? If you wake up in the morning and tell yourself you’re not going to amount to anything that day, then you aren’t going to. If you go to bed at night thinking nothing will change tomorrow, then you are going to change nothing.

Because you’ve resigned yourself to that lie. And it is a lie, friend. A straight-out, soul-condemning, out-of-the-pit, self-deprecating, self-pitying lie. A lie you don’t have to believe. A lie you should not believe.

If you stand in the corner and bow your head and stare at the ground, you’ve already lost the battle without fighting. This is a surrender in which there is no honor, and in it there is no hope.

Life isn’t easy, friend. Life isn’t fair. It’s hard. And getting things done is hard. Some days, just getting up out of bed is hard. Just breathing. Just doing homework. Just going to work. Just trying to keep the dishes and trash from overflowing.

But we do it anyway.

Why? Because there’s life to live. There are choices to be made. Jokes to laugh at. Awkward conversations to be had. Art to mess up and start over on. Jobs to work. Pizza to be eaten.

We do it anyway.

So guess what?

You do it anyway too.

Why? Because of this:

You are special.

Right now, this second, turn off the voice that hears these Disney-fied words and scoffs and ignores them. Listen.

There is not a human being who has ever lived or ever will live on this planet that is not important, that is not here for a reason. No life is worthless, and most certainly not yours. My God doesn’t make worthless things, and he doesn’t make mistakes. There are no extra pieces in this universe, no spare parts. He made you. And he made you for a purpose, and that purpose is not to sit in your room, afraid to try, afraid to love, afraid to hope, afraid to climb and fall and hurt and get back up again.

Want to know another secret? You aren’t alone. Every single human being in the history of everything has struggled with feeling worthless at some point in their life. Every single one. That is not a lie. Your feelings of worthlessness are not what is special about you. You are what is special about you. The God who created you is what is special about you.

No matter what you’re going through, no matter what you’ve done, no matter what you have failed to do, someone else has gone through worse. Sometimes, a lot worse.

Oh, now you feel invalidated. “Why can’t I just believe in myself? Other people have it worse, I shouldn’t complain, I should just try harder, but I know trying harder isn’t going to help, so what’s the point.”

Guess what?

Stop that too.

Stop it dead in its tracks.

Kill that thought. Every day. Every morning. Every minute it shows its ugly lying face. Kill it and put it to rest. Stack headstones on top of it and move away, far far way, friend.

Don’t tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about. I don’t know where you’ve been, but you don’t know where I’ve been either. Don’t ignore hope because you think it’s for other people. Don’t keep yourself from making an effort, and pushing yourself forward. Bury the lie. You have worth. You are loved. You are important. God does not make worthless things.

One of my favorite lyrics says “How does it end when the war that you’re in is just you against you against you? You’ve got to learn to love, learn to love your enemies too.”

Learn to love.

Your enemy.

Yourself.

Start learning to see you the way God sees you.

See you the way I see you.

Perfect.

Worthwhile.

Amazing.

Just at the very beginning.

Every single day you wake up is a brand new start.

A bright new chance. Every. Single. One. You will never stop getting chances for as long as you are here, so why dismiss them? Isn’t that the most beautiful thing there is? You get to keep trying. Every single day. You have the gift to go again, try again, start again, live again, breathe again, hope again.

Guess what. When the morning is wasted, the afternoon is still there. When the afternoon is wasted, the evening is still there. When the evening is wasted, the night is still there. And then morning comes again.

So the next time you see a motivational post, an inspiring reblog, a story about how someone overcame something horrible, and turned it into something amazing, look long and hard and take courage, find hope in that. Stop dismissing it as being from a universe you have no part in. Stop putting yourself to that measuring stick and turning away because you’re not there yet.

You’re looking at the end result. At some point, they were standing in your shoes. They couldn’t see the end. They couldn’t see what they might or might not amount to. They had no idea, just like you now. Just exactly like you.

Hope, my friend. Every time you start to think “I can/will never” do this or that or amount to anything or accomplish anything… Hope. Stop those thoughts immediately. Kill them. Bury them. Never stop burying them. They are lies and you are better than them.

Drive them out. Open your eyes. Look around. Pick yourself up. Brush away the tears. “I will try. My God doesn’t make worthless things, so I am not worthless. My God does not create without meaning, so I have meaning. I am here for a reason. Today I will live to find out what that reason is for today. And tomorrow I will hope again.”

Life is hard, my friend. Stop beating yourself up. You are worth more and capable of more than you can ever imagine or hope or dream. Don’t let your past or present failures stop you or beat you down. Keep going, keep hoping, keep killing the lies. You are bigger than them, you go beyond them. And God is greater, and he knows your heart. Trust him. Wake up. Open your eyes. Move forward. Keep your eyes open.

“You’ve got all that emotion that’s heaving like an ocean
And you’re drowning in a deep, dark well
I can hear it in your voice that if you only had a choice
You would rather be anyone else

I love you just the way that you are
I love the way He made your precious heart

Be kind to yourself
Be kind to yourself

I know it’s hard to hear it when that anger in your spirit
Is pointed like an arrow at your chest
When the voices in your mind are anything but kind
And you can’t believe your Father knows best

I love you just the way that you are
I love the way He’s shaping your heart

Be kind to yourself
Be kind to yourself

Well how does it end when the war that you’re in
Is just you against you against you
Gotta learn to love, learn to love
Learn to love your enemies too

You can’t expect to be perfect
It’s a fight you’ve gotta forfeit
You belong to me whatever you do
So lay down your weapon, darling
Take a deep breath and believe that I love you

Be kind to yourself
Be kind to yourself
Be kind to yourself

Gotta learn to love, learn to love
Learn to love your enemies
Gotta learn to love, learn to love
Learn to love your enemies too

PART 2  PART 3

MASTERLIST

TAKING REQUESTS

Request: Can I request one where Bruce Banner has a daughter he kept hidden but then has to bring her to the tower cause her mom and step dad kicked her out? Tony knew about her and she looked to him like an uncle. She feels unwanted and unloved but it all changes with her new family with the team. I’m needing some fluff

I changed it so that not even Tony knew about her and I hope that’s okay!

Warnings: None.

Words: 2 974

A/N: Oooooh my god I absolutely loved writing this! It’s 100% fluff with a bit of feels if you’re a sucker for broken families :))))))) Read at your own, fucking risk cause as I’m from a broken home myself this is amazing to read. (I don’t care that I’m self promoting my own work just read it damn it).

She sat waiting on the steps leading up the the front porch of her house, her overpacked duffel bag by her side and her phone clutched in her hands. It was mid dusk and the sun was setting in the distance, the sky turning darker for every minute passing.

She had been kicked out by her own mother and her new husband. She didn’t know how to feel about it. Her mom treated her like crap. Ever since Y/N had began resembling her father more and more as the years went by, her mom had progressively began to dislike her.

Y/N wasn’t the usual kind of girl, however cliché that sounded it was true nonetheless. She went freely to a biochemical science class long after school was over simply because she loved the subject. Her room was covered with a dozen of projects made from scrap material she had scoured the city for. She filled entire notebooks up with difficult equations simply for the joy being able to solve them so effortlessly.

Y/N was so much like her father that her mother could barely stand being around her own daughter at times. It hurt, more than her mother would ever understand, to be treated like a misfit in her own home.

His small car rolled up to he street before her house and she rose to her feet, bringing the duffel bag up with her.

They hadn’t seen each other in almost half a year. He was busy with his work, his new associates and dealing with personal struggling Y/N could only begin to understand the difficulty of.

She made her way up to the car and watched as the door opened up and Bruce got out, smiling nervously. “Hi kid.” He huffed, shoving his hands down into the pockets of his jacket.

“Hey.” She smiled back, her stomach feeling hollow from the happiness she was feeling simply from seeing her dad. “I’ve missed you.”

His heart ached by her simple confession. “I’ve missed you too, and… I’m so sorry about your mother.”

Y/N had been kicked out. Her mom had found a new guy who owned a private island in the Bahamas. The second the two of them met, her mom was gone. Y/N didn’t have any choice but to call up her dad and beg for help.

Bruce hadn’t hesitated. All he had ever wanted was to be around his daughter but her mother had prevented him from doing it, and he had always been submissive. When her mother had yelled at him that the other guy could lash out at any time and kill his daughter, he hadn’t argued with her for a second. He agreed if anything, but he loved his daughter too much to deny her to live with him when her mother practically gave her no other choice.

“Don’t be.” She smiled reassuringly, doing her best to forget about her mom for the time being. “Should we get going?”

She didn’t want to stick around her house anymore. It stood eerily empty from her mom packing her things and just waking out the door. Y/N didn’t know what would happen to it, but nor did she care. Few memories from that home were truly happy once and the ones that were involved Bruce in one way or another. She would rather watch it disappear in the rear view mirror of her dad’s car than anything.

“Of course, let me take that.” He reached out and grabbed her bag, furrowing his brows as he heard a clinking noise before a smile began to creep up his face. “Is that what I think it is?”

“The self-running generator I built in freshmen year, yeah.” She smiled proudly. “I use it to power up my computer, or used to…”

He huffed, putting her bag carefully in the trunk of the car. “Believe me, sweetie, you can have as many computers as you want when you come home.”

Her heart skipped a beat at that simple word. Home she had never considered to be the small house in northern Queens. If anything, home had been in school. That was the only place she had felt like she could be herself and where others accepted her for just that. At home, she felt out of place and abnormal and was judged for her hobbies and interests as well as her pure skills both in the scientific and technical field. Coming to a place where people shared her interests and where she would hopefully be accepted sounded like heaven.

They got into the car and Bruce started the engine, slowly driving out on the street and starting their drive back to the Tower. She looked up at the rear view mirror, seeing her childhood house become smaller and smaller before disappearing behind the nearby homes. As it did, she felt a weight fall off of her shoulders, a burden she hadn’t realized she had been carrying. It was the burden of her mother, the constant suppression of who she was. It was all lifted off her back and stayed behind with the Murray Hill house

“I have to confess something…” Bruce broke the silence and Y/N glanced over to him worryingly. She was preparing for the worst as he found herself doing more often than not. “I might have asked Tony to give you a workshop, and he might have done it…”

She gasped before letting out a short groan of disapproval. “What? No, why? I don’t need one!”

“But you sure would like one. I know you, Y/N. You have barely been able to put down a glass of water in your bedroom because you’ve had so many of your projects laying around… I think it’s time you separate where you sleep from where you tinker.” He looked at her briefly from the corner of his eyes, knowing she was indescribably happy even if she objected. He just wanted her to have what she deserved, which was the entire world if he had a say in it. “It’s the least I can do…”

She didn’t like that tone he had to the last sentence. He was feeling guilty and responsible for the way her childhood had turned out. She didn’t blame him for as much as a second however. If anyone had done anything wrong, it was her mother.

“Don’t guilt trip me here. You know I’m an easy crier.” She laughed in hopes to lighten the mood. “Let’s just focus on the present and the future, like how I got the annual scholarship from Columbia University.”

Bruce almost slammed the breaks of the car. Instead, he paid an alarming amount of time looking at her with blown wide eyes instead of focusing on the road. “No…”

“Yes.” She smiled, even prouder this time as Columbia University had been a dream of hers since she first came to Midtown high school and was told that she had a natural gift. She had competed with four others in a three hour long exam-like test and had been judged by a Colombia University represent. When she was sent the letter stating she got the scholarship, her mom had barely blinked. Y/N hadn’t cared however. She knew her dad would have been proud, and he had proven her so.

“That’s- That’s incredible!” He exclaimed, a big smile on his face that he couldn’t get rid of. “You deserve it. You’ve worked so hard for it.”

“I’ve had some help.” She said suggestively, leaning her elbow against the small ledge by the door window.

He glanced over at her in confusion before slowly puzzling it together. “What? The boxsets of build-you-own things I have you for your birthdays when you were, what, ten?”

“Hey, building rocket ship models and creating baking soda volcanos really helped!” She chuckled as recalled building and making half a dozen of those kinds of things all on the same night she had gotten them.

Bruce sighed in content, his heart warm like never before. “I’m so happy for you, kid. You turned out better than I could ever have hoped for.”

“Thanks, dad.” She said and let her head lean against the back of her seat. Bruce let out a short breath, barely remembering the last time he had been called dad in person. He liked the sound of it more than he would ever care to admit.

“Can I confess another thing?” He asked as they made their way into the elevator at the garage floor at the bottom of the Stark Tower.

“You haven’t gotten me something else, have you?” She questioned worryingly as she didn’t want him to spent his time and money on her.

“No…” His voice wasn’t as joyful as it had been and that truly made her worry. Was he getting cold feet? Did he not want her to live with him anymore? “I actually haven’t told anyone that I have a daughter.”

She raised her eyebrows in surprise. “But how- you said Tony fixed a workshop for me?”

“He did.” Bruce assured, looking down at his feet, ashamed, which was far from necessary. She didn’t mind but she was a bit taken back however.

“Wait… Does that mean they don’t even know that I’m coming?” She tried to look at him but he avoided her eyes which resembled his own. “Dad?”

He looked at her upon hearing that word again, slowly beginning to nod his head yes. “I didn’t know if I was ever going to see you again, so I saved myself the struggle of having explain our whole situation to the team.”

That was a very fair point. He could have told her it was because he simply didn’t want to and she would have been equally as fine with the answer. “Then you have some explaining to do when we get up, I assume.” She said as she looked up at the glowing level numbers above the elevator door which surpassed seventy.

“A whole lot.” Bruce sighed, hoping the team would understand. He didn’t doubt it however. If anyone would understand and accept the situation with Bruce and Y/N, it would be the team. They were far more supportive than they usually let show and he knew he could count on them even if he still worried about it.

The elevator came to a stop at the ninety sixth floor and the metal doors moved aside with a ding. The floor appeared empty at first but chatter was heard from further inside, echoing through the spacious lounge area.

Y/N examined the room with amazement. The architecture was unique with walkways and split levels along with highly modern interior. It was such a drastic change from her mother’s house that she could barely wrap her head around it.

As they came around a corner, an area with multiple sofas and armchairs surrounding a low table appeared, the Avengers themselves seated. As Y/N and Bruce appeared the table fell quiet and turned towards them. She felt like a deer in the headlights of a car but felt a surge of confidence as she had Bruce by her side.

“Banner!” Tony exclaimed, rising from his seat as he had sat with his back towards Bruce at first. “We didn’t think you’d make it… And who’s this? That assistant you talked about?”

Bruce took a deep breath. He hadn’t kept Y/N a secret because of her. He wished he would have been able to talk about his daughter and brag about her smarts, how beautiful she was and how well she was doing. He just hadn’t found it in himself to share his largest pride. The words that Y/N'a mother had told him, about the Other Guy being so dangerous in a world with Y/N, had rattled him into silence. It was time to break that silence however. Y/N was with him now.

“Everyone, this is Y/N… My daughter.”

Scott got a peanut stuck in his throat and coughed violently. The rest of the team were equally as shocked but showed it more discreetly. Everyone shared one thing however, and that was their loss of words. None of them could come up with a single thing to say but simply stared at Bruce and at Y/N which stood slightly behind her father.

“Hello.” She said quietly to the team, glancing up at Bruce that was looking back her way but not meeting her eyes once again.

“You have a daughter?” Tony questioned. “You’re not acting like you’ve just found out this fact like the rest of us…”

“I’ve known about her since the day she was born, and about nine months before that as well if I’m going to be honest.” He admitted and looked from Tony to Steve, to Bucky and Natasha. The others were still staring as well. Scott, Thor, Wanda, Vision, Clint, Sam and Rhodes. The only one who didn’t have the same look of pure surprise was Peter.

Y/N…” Peter said breathlessly and she looked over at the teen who she hadn’t seen until then, her eyes widening upon seeing his face.

“Peter?” She questioned, almost feeling dizzy by how strange of a direction things had suddenly taken.

“You know him?” Steve stood up as well, wanting to try and get a hold of the situation and properly get his head around things.

“Our biochemical science teacher, Professor Lloyd, has these optional, enclosed, seminars after hours for any students that have a passion… We’re both in it.”

“We have English and electrical engineering together as well, but why is he-” Y/N cut herself off, rephrasing her own words as she realized Peter was very much present. “Why are you here?”

Everyone looked over to Peter like they were waiting for him to reply. As he hesitated, Y/N’s mind raced as usual. She knew everyone on the team as their superhero personas and most of them had gotten their true identity connected with their alternative one, if they had ever had two to begin with. Tony being Iron Man was probably the easiest one, but she could put a name to the face with everyone else, but one superhero was left on her mind and Peter was the only one left in the room.

“You’re Spider-Man.” She accused and Peter began to stutter in panic, confirming her theory without using a single word.

“Bruce?” Tony dragged out the name and looked at Banner with hesitation. “Does your kid have, you know… Gifts?”

Bruce barely understood what he had been asked at first but then immediately began shaking his head. “No! No, no… Well, nothing that isn’t natural at least, if that’s what we’re referring to.”

“Oh thank god…” Scott suddenly let out along with a long sigh of relief. “I don’t know if I can handle any more super-teens in this group.”

“There’s one?” Rhodes questioned, not understanding Lang’s logic.

“Look.” Bruce called out to gain the attention of everyone again, looking back to Y/N for permission as they both knew that Bruce needed to explain. She nodded, and he understood. “Her- Her mom ditched her… She doesn’t have anywhere else to go and no one else to turn to…”

“You don’t have to explain.” Steve said to Bruce, a faint smile meant for Y/N as reassurance. “Of course you’re welcome here, Y/N.”

Steve walked through the gatherings of furniture where he had been sat and went up to Y/N, reaching his hand out and shaking hers. She smiled back, feeling like she might finally be in the right place.

“We already know each other, so I think we’re good.” Peter said, joining Steve and her with a smile of his own.

“Any family of Bruce is family of mine.” Natasha stood up and also made her way to Y/N. As Y/N though she would shake Natasha’s hand, the spy wrapped her arms around the startled teen for a brief hug. “I hope you like it here…”

One after another, the team rose to their feet, an act of approval that Y/N had a clear place in the Tower and with them. Had she been able to feel that amount of joy and acceptance on when alone, she would have been crying rivers, but she managed to hold them in.

Everyone began to make their way towards her at that point and left the couches and armchairs. Peter held his clutched hand up and requested a fist bump which Y/N happily gave him.

“You’ll fit in just great, and I’m always available if you wanna talk.” Wanda promised Y/N and also gave her a hug.

She had never felt at home, like she was truly meant to be somewhere. Perhaps it was part of her relatively shy and withheld personality, or it was simply because of where and how she had been raised. Her mom had never been supportive. She barely said hi after Y/N came home after school. She might have been Y/N’s mom, but Y/N had gotten ten times the love from a group of strangers in five minutes than she had ever gotten from her own mother through out her entire life.

Bruce looked down at his daughter that for far too long had lived a life so far away from what she deserved that it was almost humorous. He tried think of the advice she had given him, to focus on the present and the future, which to his joy seemed to consist of a lot more father and daughter time. Y/N wouldn’t mind having more of that time. Neither would she mind calling wherever the Avengers were as her new home.

Do you ship Shiro x Matt? How about a fluffy love filled reunion after Matt is rescued from the galra.

There was no way Shiro would fall asleep anytime soon. Everyone else had already retired, exhausted from the long battle and rescue mission that tipped the scales in their favour yet again, gave them just a little more hope that this rebellion could be successful in the end.
Pidge’s reunion with their father and brother had been heartbreakingly beautiful, crying out for each other as they stumbled through the wreckage of the huge galran ship, panicked or disbelieving prisoners shrieking around them as they fell into each others arms, sobbing with relief.
And even though Shiro had wanted to do nothing but join in he let them have that private moment to themselves, busy with herding prisoners to safety anyway.

Then had come the introductions and the forging of immediate plans to take the prisoners to a habitable planet for the time being, then the showers and a tired meal and between all of that there had barely been any time for a heartfelt but very brief greeting.
There were still so many things on Shiro’s mind, things he wanted to say and ask, that kept him wide awake in spite of the exhaustion weighing down his limbs. In the end he rolled out of bed and set to wander the hallways. Aimlessly at first until he felt a suspicion squirm to life in the back of his mind.

He found Matt on the bridge, sitting cross legged on the floor in front of the huge windows, head tipped back to gaze at the nebula extending along the ship’s right side, blues swirling into greens and purples in mesmerizing, gorgeous patterns.
He didn’t react to the sound of the doors hissing open, neither to Shiro’s steps as he moved closer and finally crouched down next to his old friend.

They were silent for a while. Matt’s lips curved into a soft, relaxed smile as he kept staring out into the endless depths. Shiro hummed and sat down as well.

“How is your leg?”, he asked, voice low and careful, not quite sure if he really wanted to disturb the serene silence just yet. Matt frowned.
“My … oh, yeah.” It was a laugh, the same, breathy, carefree sound it always had been and Shiro felt his heart skip a beat. “Almost forgot about that. It’s fine. Has been for a while, don’t worry.”
Shiro let out a stuttering breath, his shoulders dropping with relief as he nodded slowly, trying to turn to the breathtaking expanse of open space in front of them but failing when his eyes were drawn back to Matt’s profile again and again. The eerie, blue glow of the castle turned him into something otherworldly. Shiro felt like his hand might go right through him, should he try to reach out and touch.

Then, before he could even think about his next words, his lips parted and he breathed a soft: “I’m sorry.”
That was what finally got Matt to turn his head, regarding him with a strange blend of sadness and incredulity.
“For what?”, he asked with another, breathy laugh. Shiro wanted to kiss him. “Saving my life? Cause that’s what you did and I don’t wanna hear any more about this. So how about you explain the weird cat robots instead?”

That made Shiro laugh. Finally.
“They’re lions”, he said and watched Matt roll his eyes with an exasperated huff. Oh he’d gotten so beautiful… “And you should talk to the princess if you want to know more. She’s way better at explaining this mess than I am.”
Matt hummed thoughtfully, turning to look out of the window again:
“Princess Allura”, he said, tipping his head to the side just slightly, opening the side of his neck to Shiro. “She seems nice.”
“Oh, she’s terrifying.”

They laughed and just like that it was easy again, both of them slowly drifting back into what once had been. Tentative and slow but so very hopeful.
“Do you like her?”, Matt asked and he sounded so carefree he almost had Shiro fooled.
“Not…” Like you. “Like that”, he said instead, voice just a little throaty as he managed to shift his gaze away from Matt. Maybe it was too early. A lot had happened since they’d last seen each other. There were so many things to talk about and what they’d once been probably belonged on the bottom of that list.

But then Matt shifted, sliding closer to him until he could rest his head against Shiro’s shoulder, one of his elegant but calloused hands coming to rest on Shiro’s knee.
“Then why don’t you…”, he whispered, tipping his head back until he could breathe the words right into Shiro’s ear, making a shudder run down his spine. “…take me to your room, paladin?”
Shiro swallowed, hard, feeling heat flush into his cheeks. He nodded, very slowly.
“I … I can do that…”
“Good”, Matt smiled, breathing a feather light kiss against his cheek. Then: “I missed you…” and Shiro all but melted.

Nothing really happened that night. But with Matt back in his arms, breathing softly against his neck, Shiro finally found sleep as well.

Ive had this idea on my mind for a while. What if Sans stumbles upon a human that can do magic, and of course he's wary, so he keeps an "eyesocket out for them", but the more he watches them the fonder he grows of them.(turns out they're a huge dork)

better late than never, right?

….right?

(hope you like this, i had so much fun and i kinda got carried away with it)

read me before following!

Pairing: Sans/Reader

Summary: Given the complicated history between monsters and humans, wariness of each other is nothing personal. Well, except between you and Sans. That’s very personal for one big reason: you can use magic.

After moving up to the surface, Sans sort of noticed that he’d been more reserved than usual.

He couldn’t really blame himself for that. Trust…was a hard thing to muster. Especially when he spent most his life watching not only over his brother, but himself.

It wasn’t as if the Underground was a harsh place to life. The camaraderie of monsters was simply more prevalent than it was on the surface. Humans had so much to learn. They focused more on what was different between them than what was the same. Despite being trapped on a small planet in the middle of nowhere, they still managed to create new wars over old ideologies.

…well. Maybe he shouldn’t have been so harsh on them for that. After all…monsters held on to a certain kind of hatred for so long that it warped their realities and morals, too.

Back to the point: Sans wasn’t as friendly to humans as he was to other monsters. He hid it well with casual banter and whacky jokes. Anything to make people comfortable with his presence. If he could make himself seem safer by putting on a façade, then he would do it with the fakest smile he could muster.

But…living on edge all the time was tiring.

Especially since nothing had changed. When he was part of the sentry back in Snowdin, he would watch the world go by and keep his upbeat attitude for his brother.

Now, everyone he interacted with – aside from Papyrus – received the same treatment. Keep the humans away. Make sure your SOUL was locked up tight. And never let your guard down.

Even here, in the park, he couldn’t rest his bones. Seated on the bench, the sun raining down on his bleached skull, there was still a prickle of uncertainty flitting down his spine. He let his eyelights go dark in his sockets, relishing the warmth of this heady summer day, and absorbed every shred of stimuli that swept through him.

Flinch.

“Whoa! Are you okay? I’m so sorry!” you shouted, having nearly mowed down the skeleton.

The gaggle of dogs continued to sniff and prod at him with wet, slimy noses, snuffling at his clothes and their tails growing stiff from pinpointing the source of the smell. You had your hands full. Literally. Their leashes were tangled up and around your wrist and fingers.

He had to admit, for a dogwalker, you were bold. Rollerblades strapped to your feet, wristguards and a helmet to keep you safe. You were already drenched with sweat trying to keep up with them, but luckily the tanktop and shorts were there to help you cool off from being worked so hard.

“heya, pups.” Sans reached out and patted one of them on the snout. They immediately reared back and barked playfully. “heh, yep. figured you’d get a kick outta me.”

“Sorry about that,” you repeated, burning from both the weather and sheer embarrassment. “I didn’t even see you here. The park is usually empty this type of day since it’s during school.”

“yeah, guess both of us don’t have that commitment then, huh?”

“Nope. I’m living the dream, as you can see.” You nodded to the group. “I work at the…well, it’s a nonprofit organization for rescued dogs. Maybe you’ve heard of us. ‘Bark Over Bite’?”

He hadn’t, but nodded anyway. “sure have. doin’ great work out there.” He figured as much, based on how comfortable the pups were with you.

“Anyway, gotta get back out there. I’m on a tight schedule. Thanks for not scolding me! You wouldn’t believe some of the nasty things old people say when you get in their personal bubble. I’m guessing you’re a little on the younger side, then.” You smiled politely. “See you!”

He didn’t bother saying anything back, already relieved you were gone.

Sans was content to spend the rest of the afternoon by himself, like he’d planned, but you obviously had other plans.

“WHOA! Slow down, guys! Wait!”

Even from this far away, he heard the sheer panic in your voice. Something that sent an unpleasant skittering along his bones. He glanced over and saw how wobbly your stance was, how your muscles strained as you did your best to come to a stop. But the full weight of your horde of dogs was enough to tear you from that hope and put you back into a dangerous reality.

Sans followed your trajectory and saw where you were headed. There was a small crowd of kids with ice cream cones wrapped in their sticky hands, lapping at the treats. They spotted the dogs and decided to call them all over with their afternoon sweet as an incentive. Between the high-pitched cooing and the whooping and cheering as the dogs zeroed in on the ice cream, Sans saw a recipe for disaster.

“HEEL! SIT! STAY! GUYS, PLEASE!”

By some miracle, you’d managed to stay upright despite the leashes propelling you forward at breakneck speed. Sans stood on top of the bench to get a better view, his SOUL flaring to life in the middle of his chest, and his fingers ready to snap into action despite how little he really cared.

In a split second, he felt the CRACK! of magic.

Your body turned light blue. So did the dogs. And kids. Their SOULs were drawn out of their chests, so heavy and thick with excess magic that they ran in slow motion. None of them knew what was happening to their bodies so they all hesitated…just long enough that you passed through each other.

He couldn’t believe it.

Sans didn’t do that.

So who did?

He searched around but couldn’t find any other monster. It was just humans here.

At the end of the path, you had managed to stop long enough to tear the rollerblades from your feet. You’d met a rough stop by crashing into a tree and flopping into the grass, but the dogs were completely fine. The kids were shocked. Shaken up a bit. Some of them jumped up and down and shook out their limbs as best they could, at least not hard enough to have the scoop of ice cream fall from their cones.

Sans scanned the perimeter but for some reason he couldn’t take his eyes off you.

Maybe it was because…

You were the one who used the magic.

No.

Way.

You approached the kids more calmly this time. The dogs panted and wagged their tails, licking the fallen ice cream cones and tears from the kids’ faces. The teacher, who must’ve stepped away for just a minute to help another kid with a bloody nose, saw the commotion and rushed over.

“Are they all trained? Will they bite?”

“Nah. These are our best-behaved dogs. Err, I mean, they’re still learning boundaries, but none of them are aggressive and work closely with kids.”

Sans watched you check the kids secretly for wounds. And then…

“Hey, I think I’ve got a few leaves in my hair.” You approached a child with a slight scrape on their elbow. “Can you help me get it out?”

She nodded and reached up, pudgy fingers tangled in your locks. You winced from her rough handling, but she managed to grab one. It looked…especially green. Almost like fresh grass sprouting in the spring after a long, earth-quenching rain. And after she took it, it almost…faded away. Her scrape didn’t look so red any more…wait, where did it go?

If he had a stomach, it would’ve dropped.

“See you later, puppy!” one of the kids cried. “Bye bye!”

You waved and the dogs followed you, satisfied with their midmorning treat and the overwhelming affection of the kids.

Sans wasn’t going to ignore this. It was crucial information.

A human. Could use. Magic.

And maybe it wasn’t that well developed. Maybe you were just the freak product of some ridiculously recessive gene soup. But he knew one thing: humans with magic once wrought havoc on monsterkind hundreds of years ago. If they had the advantage now, who knew what kind of selfish, horrible things they could accomplish?

“WHERE ARE YOU GOING TODAY, SANS?”

“heading over to the animal shelter.”

“OH, EXCELLENT! I HAVE SOME EXTRA CANNED FOOD THEY MIGHT USE. FRISK DROPPED IT OFF BECAUSE TORIEL MADE THEM GIVE BACK THE PUPPY THEY TOOK FROM THE SHELTER. NYEH HEH HEH! IT IS NOT THEIR FAULT, I DON’T THINK…ANIMALS ARE DRAWN TO THEM. I THINK THEY CAN SENSE WHEN KIDS ARE GOOD. DON’T YOU THINK?”

Sans poked at his breakfast. The milk in his cereal bowl bubbled at him in response.

“you’re awesome, bro. i’ll make sure to ask if they want it.”

“HOORAY! THEN EAT UP. YOU’LL NEED YOUR STRENGTH. I’LL LOAD THE FOOD IN THE BACK OF YOUR MOPED. MAKE SURE THAT THE TRUNK IS LOCKED THIS TIME.”

Papyrus was busy on the surface. Which was good. He had his own business going and made a lot of friends. Sans knew that his brother would flourish so long as he held on to his boundless optimism and confidence. He met so many cool people in town after seeking out friends, and Frisk introduced him to the more proper way of expanding his social network. By now, he had far more friends than he did strangers in his life – and Sans was very proud of him for that.

Sans, on the other hand, mainly kept in contact with old pals through his phone. He and Toriel texted often. Alphys tagged him in bad memes on Undernet. And he was always typing up bad jokes on the selfies his old buddies took.

For right now, he worked by himself on some independent science projects. He never thought he’d jump back into it, but after Undyne bought him that kid’s chemistry set as a joke one year, he was determined to create something that would knock the big grin off her smug face.

He parked in front of the place and managed to pull the box full of food out. He was sure that the shelter wouldn’t reject the donation.

The atmosphere inside was…nice. Seemed like a clean and friendly enough place. There was a playpen off to the corner where several puppies were barking and wrestling with each other. A cat seated on top of the counter stared at him, slow blinks and all, as it repositioned itself to lean toward the bell at the counter.

Ring me! it read.

He did as he was told, but not before setting down the box on the ground so he wouldn’t have to deal with it any more.

“Coming!”

He recognized your voice. He hadn’t expected you to be here today; he thought maybe he’d snoop and try to pick up on some clues. Not that you would actually show up. He really hoped that you didn’t—

“Hey! It’s you!”

—recognize him.

You grinned and leaned over the counter, your hair in disarray. It looked like one of the animals had gotten sick all over your shirt. That or it was paint. “Nice to see you again. I’m glad you decided to check us out! What can I do for you?”

Sans bent down and brought up the case full of food. “got some donations for ya, courtesy of my bro. he was real touched when i told him about what you do, so this is from him.”

“Oh man, tell your brother he’s the best!” You reached over and snatched it from him without any hesitation. You must’ve been used to hauling dog food back and forth, because you didn’t even flinch from the added weight in your arms. “Hey, he should stop by sometime. The dogs would probably thank him personally. How does he feel about wet puppy smooches?”

That got a smile out of him. “eh. think he’d rather they don’t. he’s got a thing about affection.”

“Ah, no problem, then. We’ve got some oldies here who don’t wanna do anything but cuddle. Did you want to take a tour?”

“ok.”

He wasn’t sure why he said it. He meant to do some light spying and then take off. Not interfere with what you were doing. Maybe he was just curious because he wanted to see the extent of your powers.

As far as he knew, you could do two: blue and green magic. That was more than what he had control over, and it was unheard of for anyone to use more than one. What was your deal?

The rest of the building was basic. There were a few acres of land in the back with a tall enough fence that the dogs couldn’t jump over it. Lots of worn toys strewn everywhere. Drool around every corner, some pictures of the dogs that some kids drew hanging over their beds. It smelled bad, and the place looked like it’d seen better days, but you were trying your best to keep it together.

“crazy what happened yesterday, huh?”

You paused. Finished stacking the cans in the cupboard. “Oh, the kids? You saw that?”

“yeah. it’s real lucky no one got hurt.”

“I know. I should’ve been more careful.” Your voice was soft now. “Sometimes it’s hard to control…the dogs. You know. And they can be a little…wild, when they’re distracted. I think all they need is…practice? I can help them the best they can.”

“sounds like you’re stretched thin here.”

“Kind of. One of our supervisors quit. He moved away to retire somewhere warm and tropical with his husband. Not that I blame him. But that means longer nights for me! Which, I don’t mind, I practically live here. And overtime pay is great. Still kinda lonely though.”

He stared at your dejected expression.

“But I mean. Anyway. It’s not that big of a deal.” You shoved it all aside. But even from here he could see the uncertain waver to your SOUL. “So, uh, where do you work, Sans?”

“right now i’m takin’ a break. who knows. might end up teaching a few courses down at the community center. but eh. besides that, don’t really got a plan.”

“Man, that’s so cool. I mean. You seem pretty well put together. I never would’ve guessed.”

“heh. uh, thanks?”

It started to get dark outside. Sans hadn’t learned much about you in terms of what your magical skill was like, save for the very clear uncertainty from your awkward runaround about yesterday’s near mishap. So this was a bust.

“I gotta get back to painting this new playroom. I’ll see you around, hopefully.”

“yeah. see ya.”

From the corner of his eye, he watched you stare hard at the blank wall you’d been working on. Your clothes were a mess, the paintbrushes frayed, and it looked like you’d all but given up on trying to preserve the floor from your wrath. In the middle of it all, you managed to let out a weary sigh and push yourself to finish.

Sans headed home and found Papyrus already setting the table for dinner.

“SANS! HOW DID IT GO? DID THEY ACCEPT THE FOOD?”

“yep. a girl at the front desk told me to tell you that you’re super cool for thinkin’ of them. think you’ve got a new fan.”

“WOWIE! I SHOULD STOP BY AND GIVE HER ONE OF MY GLAMOR SHOTS. IT WOULD HELP SPICE UP THE BUILDING! EVERY PLACE IN THE CITY NEEDS A PIECE OF PAPYRUS, BUT ONLY THE MOST HONORED WILL RECEIVE IT!”

Beep.

“YOUR PHONE IS MAKING NOISES AGAIN. IS IT ALPHYS?”

“think so.” He drew the text up to read it and respond before he shoved his phone away.

aly aly oxenfree: snas, i found the info ur lookin 4!!!

snas: ok, so what’s the deal?

aly aly oxenfree: the organization is legit. right now there are only 3 employees. they pay a little above the minimum wage, but rely on public donations and fundraisers to keep their doors open.

snas: and the girl?

aly aly oxenfree: found out where she lives. that’s about it. are u sure that u saw what u said u did?

snas: i’m sure

aly aly oxenfree: & u don’t wanna tell toriel???

snas: gotta make sure she’s ok with monsters before all that.

aly aly oxenfree: she can take care of herself, oh my god

snas: yeah but she’s too nice sometimes

aly aly oxenfree: & ur not?

snas: g2g

Maybe it was cowardly to snoop around while you were at work. But he had to know just who it was that he was dealing with.

Your apartment wasn’t too far from the shelter. It was probably a ten-minute walk. Not the best neighborhood, but not the worst either. It looked like you lived alone. And you forgot to close the curtains before you left. He was just lucky you were on the ground floor.

Inside, your place was somewhat of a mess. Wrappers and empty fast food containers piled up in the kitchen. Your décor was a little…weird. Lots of figurines and collections from various fandoms. Alphys would’ve gotten a kick out of this if she came.

In the corner of the room, almost indiscernible among the thick layers of dust, was a statue of a figure so familiar it made him sick.

A human mage.

So that explained it. You knew about your magic use. This wasn’t some sort of weird coincidence where you were discovering your powers. You had stacks of library books around the statue – maybe references about the history of your talents. Maybe techniques to help you refine your craft.

Whatever the case, this only furthered his suspicion that you needed to be kept in check.

It didn’t take him long to get to the shelter.

“Hey, it’s you!”

“name’s sans. here for a job.” He planted the flier on the counter. “you still need help takin’ care of the animals?”

For the most part, you were always suspicious of people that wanted to work at your shelter. Mostly because so many people had flaked out before. It wasn’t easy introducing a lot of traumatized dogs to new people.

But Sans seemed different, in a way. And not because he was a skeleton or a monster. It was…more because of his attitude. A little laissez-faire. A little cynical, from what you could tell. Despite all of that, he seemed genuine in his desire to work with all the dogs. It…wasn’t as if you could afford to turn anyone else away. Not when the flu was going around and the person covering your days off was sick to their stomach.

“So…what made you wanna apply here?”

The interview was incredibly informal since you were the only one who could give it.

“seems like a neat place. you’ve got a good thing going. met some of your pups, and i think all they need is some tlc.”

“Do you have any experience with pets?”

“course i do. we got our own dog back home. he mostly sleeps in my room.”

“Aww, cute. So, let’s go through some scenarios…”

Suffice it to say, Sans passed with flying colors. He was so damn charismatic despite acting so casual. It was an admirable trait.

“When can you start?”

“you got time to train me today?”

“Sure! Let’s do it!”

You had already given him a tour, so some basics wasn’t that bad. Showing him the chart of all the dogs’ diets, where the food and water was kept, the schedules with everyone’s exercise and play time. Sans approached them carefully and always respected their boundaries, especially when you included him in the scheduled fun.

Over the next few weeks, Sans performed way above your expectations, which was already high to begin with. But you noticed something…weird.

For one, Sans would barely make eye contact with you. Hey, everyone had their issues and interacted with the world differently. But it felt like he was so engaging with possible foster parents and adopters. Not you. Which kind of hurt your feelings.

Second, he never wanted to hang out with you after work. Which. Okay. You sort of understood why he wouldn’t, since work and personal lives were easiest when kept separate. But he was so cool with you before, when you first met, so you wondered why his tune had changed.

Third, and weirdest of all, Sans was never alone with you. If you needed his help with something, he would find another task to do and complete it on his own. There was no small talk between you anymore. If anything, it felt like he was keeping you at arm’s length on purpose. As if he was just around the corner, observing but never engaging. How weird was that?

“Hey, Sans. You want to grab something to eat?” It was bath day for the dogs, which meant you were in no position to cook tonight. Not with your aching body. “I know this really cool place down the street.”

“thanks for the offer, but i’m good. my bro is comin’ to pick me up. we’ve got a dinner to get to.”

“Oh. Sounds awesome. I hope you have fun.”

You were putting on your shoes when the door burst open. “SANS! THE CAR IS RUNNING OUTSIDE AND YOUR FAVORITE SONG IS ON! WE HAVE TO HURRY BEFORE IT’S OVER!”

Whoa!

Who was that?!

Well, obviously it was Sans’ brother. But he was so TALL. He and his brother looked like exact opposites. You expected another slouchy monster with a weird sense of humor, definitely not this ridiculously handsome and cool dude who peered at you like you’d just grown another head.

“YOU!!!”

“Me???”

“YOU!!! I HAVE SOMETHING FOR YOU.” He dug into his pocket and grinned as he handed it to you. An autographed picture of himself. “I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THE PERFECT MOMENT TO GIVE THIS TO YOU.”

“Wait a second, you’re the brother who donated food to my pups?”

“THAT WOULD BE ME, PAPYRUS!!!”

“Whoa.” That was all you could muster before he reached out to shake your hand, which you returned warmly. “I’m gonna put this on my list of STAR donors! Is that okay?”

“A-ABSOLUTELY!” He put his hands up to his chin and you laughed at the faint blush dusting his cheekbones. “I WOULD EXPECT NOTHING LESS, FOR I AM THE MOST GENEROUS OF PEOPLE.”

“Seems like it. Hey Sans, your brother is just as awesome as you said he was! He’s getting washed up, I think, we were knee-deep in soapy water all day.”

“YOU HAVE DONE WONDERS WITH HIM. ONCE UPON A TIME HE USED TO FEAST ON CRUMBS IN-BETWEEN COUCH CUSHIONS BECAUSE HE WAS TOO LAZY TO GET A NEW BAG OF CHIPS.”

“Uhhh…”

“INDEED! NOW HE IS ACTIVE AND HELPFUL HERE. I HAVE YOU TO THANK FOR THAT. YOU MUST BE AN INCREDIBLE TEACHER!”

“Ah, I’m okay….”

“I HAVE A SPECTACULAR AND AMAZING IDEA!!! PERHAPS YOU COULD COME WIH US TO DINNER TONIGHT. WE WILL HAVE LOTS OF FUN!”

“bro.”

Papyrus glanced over. Sans stood in the doorway, suspicion written all over his face.

“you’re here early.”

“YUPPIE! I CAME TO MAKE SURE YOU WERE PRESENTABLE. BUT GIVEN YOUR WORKLOAD TODAY, I’LL GIVE YOU A HARD PASS. OH! I WAS INVITING YOUR COWORKER TO COME WITH US. I’M SURE THE OTHERS WOULD LOVE TO MEET HER!”

“Oh, I don’t know…” You chewed on your lower lip. “I—I uh, don’t think Sans will want me there.”

“WHAT? PREPOSTEROUS. YOU TWO ARE COWORKERS. SANS HAS ALWAYS BEEN CLOSE TO THE PEOPLE HE WORKS WITH. IN FACT, HE WAS VOTED ‘FRIENDLIEST SKELETON’ IN SNOWDIN! ONLY BECAUSE I RELINQUISHED MY TROPHY TO HIM, OF COURSE.”

You couldn’t believe what you were hearing. Sans? Being nice and amicable with his coworkers? Treating them like friends? Seriously?

“SO IT’S SETTLED. WE’LL GO TO THE BAR TOGETHER! I CAN GIVE YOU A RIDE. COME WITH US.”

You knew Sans didn’t want you there. But you were starving. And it would be nice to get out of the house. Your couch was going to have buttprints soon with how much time you spent there.

“Sure. Thanks, Papyrus!”

“NO PROBLEMO. YOU CAN RIDE IN THE BACKSEAT! LET’S GO!”

Oh. The air was tense. Sans was so uncomfortable the entire ride there. Which…you really didn’t understand. Was he embarrassed of his friends? Of the place? Or…was he embarrassed of you?

The bar was one you’d walked by probably a hundred times. A cozy place that wasn’t too busy at night, at least not enough that you wouldn’t be able to hear yourself think.

“I’LL INTRODUCE YOU. THIS IS ALPHYS AND UNDYNE. THEY ARE VERY MUCH IN LOVE!!! I HAVE TO TELL EVERYONE THAT BECAUSE IT EMBARRASSES THEM. TORIEL IS UNABLE TO MAKE IT SINCE FRISK HAS THE STOMACH FLU. HAVE YOU HEARD IT’S GOING AROUND?”

“Yeah, my other coworker caught it not too long ago. She got over it, but now she’s taking care of her kids.”

“SKELETONS ARE LUCKY THEY’RE SAFE FROM CONTAGIONS. OH. UNDYNE, ALPHYS, THIS IS THE HUMAN GIRL THAT SANS WORKS WITH AT THE SHELTER!!!”

It was awkward at first, sure, but Papyrus did his best to make you feel welcome. Alphys and Sans were texting on their phones all night. You were…like ninety-nine percent sure that it was to each other. Maybe they were in a group chat with this Toriel person to check up on her. Undyne wasn’t really interested in you very much, since she was watching a swimming competition on the TV. Papyrus was the one to engage you the most, asking you all sorts of questions about working at the shelter.

“AND WHAT IF THE DOGS ARE RESTLESS? HOW DO YOU HELP THEM?”

“…she sings to ‘em.”

What.

“I—I definitely do not,” you laughed nervously, taking another long drink. “I just take them for a little walk, that’s all.”

“heh. not really. she’ll sing ‘my only sunshine’ to ‘em and snuggle with them in their rooms.”

“I definitely DON’T do that?”

“yeah you do. they like her voice. mostly ‘cuz she gets so passionate.”

“PASSIONATE HOW?”

“she dances, too. then they howl with her.”

He was exposing all your secrets! What the hell! You made sure to only do that kind of shit when he said he was going on break!

“THIS SOUNDS ADORABLE. STOP, I CAN’T TAKE MUCH MORE OF THIS.”

“didn’t even tell ya the best part. she has nicknames for all of ‘em. and she trains ‘em to give high fives to people when they take a lot during adoption drives.”

“W-what?” Alphys giggled. “That’s so cool!”

“It’s really not a big deal…”

Sans continued, not bothered in the slightest by your panicked protests. “she makes flower crowns for ‘em, too. most of ‘em let her put it on and then she takes photos for the website. then she backs out on uploadin’ ‘em because she thinks the crowns aren’t good enough.”

“It’s because they eat most of the flowers in the backyard or they wilt them!”

Sans locked eyes with you. The suddenness of his eye contact was jarring, to say the least.

“you care a lot about those animals. that’s real clear.”

“Oh…um. Thanks.”

“just statin’ the obvious.”

After eating a hearty meal, which Papyrus insisted he pay for in exchange for you dealing with his brother at work, he offered to drive you home. You agreed.

“OH! I WANT TO WASH MY HANDS. IS IT OKAY IF I USE YOUR BATHROOM?”

“Sure. Come on in. Uh, mind the mess. I wasn’t expecting company.”

The apartment was quiet, too much for your taste. You always needed the TV on to make it seem less lonely. Sans was lucky – he had a sibling to share his life with.

“OKIE DOKIE, BE RIGHT BACK!” Papyrus dashed off after you pointed him in the right direction. It was…nice?…to see him so enthusiastic about proper hygiene.

Sans stood in front of your bookshelf. A collection of all sorts of things that you were interested in. He seemed to fixate specifically on a leather book wedged between several young adult novels, though he wasn’t going to mention anything to you.

“That’s…um. Well. I borrowed that from the library that closed not too long ago.”

the precision of magic control, huh?”

“Um. Yeah.”

Awkward silence.

“Monsters are really cool. Being able to do magic. It’s normal for you guys. For humans, that sort of thing was debunked a long time ago. Now people are only beginning to understand it. Hopefully we can learn more from you.”

“hope so.”

You flinched at the coldness to his tone. “Sans?”

“yeah?”

“Do you not like me?”

He paused for a moment, but didn’t even bother looking at you. “what makes you say that?”

“Just a feeling. It’s okay if you don’t. I’m kind of weird. I talk to animals a lot, I spend most of my time playing around, and I work my ass off to give away dogs that I really do love and am attached to. It’s kind of dumb. The two of us have grown up in different places, so…I can see why you’d have a hard time getting along with me.”

Sans reached out and plucked the book from the shelf. There were scribbled notes in it.

“why do you read about this kinda stuff? looks like it’s been here longer than we’ve lived on the surface.”

You swallowed. “Well. Actually. Uh. The thing is…I want to learn about it because…I…”

A long silence. Sans waited a few more seconds before he spoke.

“that day, in the park. saw you use magic.”

“You did.” Of course he did. You weren’t exactly subtle. “It was so stupid. But I didn’t know what else to do.”

“humans don’t even have that ability any more.”

“They don’t. I’m a freak.”

He wasn’t sure why, but his chest ached at that accusation. “nah.”

“No, really. I am. I’ve had magic for as long as I can remember. I’ve taught myself so much. But it feels like all I ever do is hurt people with it. Unless I’m alone. Then the only person at risk is myself. And it’s not like anyone would care.”

That last bit wasn’t what you meant to say. It just fell out.

But Sans closed his eyes and stuffed the book back to its rightful place.

“that’s where yer wrong.”

“I am?”

“yeah.”

He turned toward you. Hands in his pockets. Eyes locked with yours. That signature grin of his fading to more of a grimace.

“Sans?”

“i gotta apologize. i got you all wrong. had this…notion of ya in my head. about what you’d be like. what kinda person you were. looks like i’m just…a bonehead.”

“It’s okay, Sans.”

“…”

“Was that a pun?”

“heh.”

“Ewww, I regret this immediately!” you laughed. “I don’t wanna be friends any more.”

“aw, c’mon. throw me a bone here.”

“No???”

Papyrus came out to the both of you laughing. “WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? HAVE I ENTERED A PARALLEL UNIVERSE?! OH NO. NOT AGAIN!”

Sans grinned. “relax, bro. we’re just doin’ what coworkers do. rib each other.”

“Get him out of my house!” you joked.

“OF COURSE. I DON’T KNOW WHY I EVEN THOUGHT HE COULD BEHAVE HIMSELF!”

“Wait, Papyrus, no! I was kidding!!!” You chased after him as he carted Sans out the door over his shoulder, already starting what looked like an hour-long lecture.

It was funny how a simple forced hand could be the turning point you were looking for. After that night, Sans seemed…more like himself, if that made any sense. He joked more often, smiled more wholeheartedly, and…

Couldn’t leave you alone for a second.

“so how old were you when you first realized you could use magic?”

“Um, maybe four or five? There was this butterfly with a crippled wing. So I healed it with a shower of leaves. I thought I could show it how to fly and it would take off again. Turns out I just used the leaves as a…conduit so I could use healing magic on it.”

“so you know green is for healing?”

“Yup. I do read monster literature, you know. It’s helped me a lot.”

“ok. what about the blue magic?”

“That one came a little later. I almost got hit by some creep on one of those scooters. He was trying to scare me and get me to jump into the lake to avoid him, but I ended up choking. I just stood there when he came full force. Then he passed right through me.”

“neat.”

You handed him the fresh bowl of food as he dropped them down one by one. You’d trained the dogs to all wait their turn eating, and spread the bowls across the lawn so no one would have an issue with you. And some careful redirecting would be in order in case any of them decided to be greedy, but they’d been much more well-behaved lately.

“So what are we? Blue buddies?”

“heh. what?”

“Blue buddies. We both have blue magic.”

“oh my god.”

“Whaaaat. Don’t laugh at me, Sans! It could be a thing!”

“hey, i can think of something else that could be a thing.”

“Oh yeah? What?”

“you…n’ me…” He started to sweat. Was he okay? Could skeletons overheat? “uh…heh…grabbin’ those tennis balls we lost over the fence.”

“Shit, I forgot about that. Let’s go right after the dogs are done.”

Movie nights. Dog walks in the park. Touring the city’s restaurants. It was all uphill from there. Sans was always looking for an excuse to hang out, a far cry from what you experienced firsthand. He and Papyrus were experts with blue magic, so a lot of the time you would stop by their place and learn more about control and finesse. Papyrus was far more helpful in that sense, since he showed you how to do things, while Sans just distracted you from the sidelines and tried to make you laugh.

You and Sans took overnight shifts waiting for a new litter of puppies to be born. One of the strays you took in from the shelter this past week was pregnant and ready to burst, but you just knew that the breed of dog was going to be hard to adopt out, so they handed them all over to you.

It was about four in the morning when you took the phone call. It was Sans.

“hey, you wanna come down here for this?”

“Yeah,” you mumbled. “I’ll be there.”

Fifteen minutes later, you joined him on the floor, at a comfortable distance from the mother as she did her best to deliver her litter. Sans had his back against the wall, knees drawn up, watching the sight in morbid fascination. Probably not at all how monster deliveries worked.

“You okay?”

“heh. sure.”

You could tell something was bothering him. “Are you sure? You seem a little out of it. I can sort of tell these things now. You have different smiles.”

“do i?” That one was for amusement. “guess you would know. yer gettin’ to be a little too perceptive for me to pull one over on ya.”

“I guess I am.” You glanced over at his hand, which twitched against the cool tile of the sterile room. “Hey, Sans?”

“what’s up.”

“Being here with you is like green magic.”

“uh….” He stammered. “i don’t get it.”

“Feels good. Like…the feeling I get when I heal someone. It’s warm in a good way. Starts out in the center of your chest, then goes all the way down to the tips of your toes…and your fingers.”

Sans nearly choked. He looked down and saw your hand resting on top of his. He could see his reflection in your eyes. Scared. Confused. What were you doing?

“And it’s kinda weird, but blue magic too. Where you have to stop and take everything in, otherwise you might get hurt. You take your time and wait it out to see where it goes.”

Oh man. He blushed. Hard. This was not happening. Was it?

“I think maybe I might get experience with orange magic soon. Where you look at the path ahead and just…go for it. Because sometimes you have to be brave to progress.”

He didn’t have a chance to ask you if you were being serious, because you had promptly kissed him just hard enough that yeah, he knew exactly what you meant. Warmth. Hesitation. Excitement. All of it wrapped up in a bundle of static that settled in the center of his chest, sparking outwards and sending every last part of his body on fire.

You pulled back. Lips swollen from the kiss. He hadn’t even realized this earlier, but your face was flushed too.

“whoa.”

“Whoa…is right. Is it…um…a whoa of approval?”

He could barely nod.

You laughed and your nose wrinkled, leaning forward to plant another one on him. “Oh. That’s good to know.”

At five in the morning, eight puppies were born. Sans named them after all the magical traits. Of course, you gave them silly nicknames everyone would use around the building.

At six in the morning, you and Sans left the shelter. Your coworker’s shift started and she would watch over the new mom and her pups.

At seven in the morning, you both went out for breakfast. Apparently, there was even a fight in the restaurant, but the both of you were so engrossed in each other that you hadn’t noticed. Sans picked up the bill and you promised you’d get it next time.

At eight in the morning, Sans stood outside your apartment as you sealed your new relationship with another long, ardent kiss. You struggled with the mechanics of it still, but nothing a few bouts of awkward laughter wouldn’t fix.

Sans walked on air as he made his way home to share the good news with his brother. Maybe moving to the surface wasn’t a mistake after all.
