Here’s the full transcript of Mark talking Darkiplier in the livestream
(Time approx. 3 hours, 52 minutes to 4 hours, 4 minutes into the stream. And, yes, this took forever). Thought you’d like this, maybe.
I’ve bolded stuff I find especially interesting.
Mark: Long ago, a long time ago, I liked to do these scary
edits because I just felt like doing scary edits and this is how Darkiplier got
born. And then what happened was over time Darkiplier became less and less
about the scary figure and more about this romantic figure, and it always
rubbed me the wrong way. And I kind of shied away from Darkiplier for a while.
And I really really really- if I was going to bring Darkiplier, and when we
thought about this, we thought, okay there should be a Darkiplier route. And that
was there from the beginning, and so when I wanted to do it I wanted to do it
my way, and I wanted to do it right, and I wanted to have this unending level
of creepiness. And at the same time, I didn’t want to step on the toes of Antisepticeye
because I know there’s a big fan base of that, and I didn’t want to get in the
way of that at all and I really don’t care that there’s more than one dark
personalities of people. But when I saw the opportunity to have this character
here, I spent like 8 hours editing this, like just meticulously every single
RBG. This is a layer, we green screened this one, I color corrected it, I
separated the RBG layers I added the shakes and glitchiness every frame. I worked
on the voice, too. The voice took me the longest to figure out. Like the
shakes! And my computer was dying this whole time cause I put my effects on
Tyler: The amount of time you had to spend rendering this.
Mark: And so, the audio’s actually three separate layers. It
would have been two, but Kathryn helped me out on that one to make it more
clear. It’s a normal pitched layer that’s edited, echoed, reverbed, mastered,
and convoluted which means it’s just thrown off to the left and right, and then
it’s a deep layer of that. But then to make it really come together- it didn’t
live without this center channel that wasn’t convoluted but was centered. But
getting that voice right was so pinnacle, so paramount to what I wanted to come
out of this. And we did like thirty minutes of shooting various versions of me
talking to the camera and I wanted to pick the exact dialogue that really kind
of gave away my idea of what Dark is in not a terribly obvious way.
Tyler: The other thing, this was supposed to all be one
Mark: But YouTube annotations, this new version doesn’t
allow you to link the same video multiple times, so these are literally the old
videos that I first did when Darkiplier first came about, like, these are the
ones, especially this one here, and then this is my cheap knockoff Darkiplier.
Amy: Canon Darkiplier.
Mark: Canon Darkiplier. And I’m going
to readily admit something. I joked about Darkiplier because it didn’t seem
like something people wanted to take seriously, and I’m okay with that on
certain aspects but it had diverged into multiple different facets and multiple
different personalities, and everyone had their own version of Darkiplier, and I
thought it was hilarious that, “Hey, here’s my version of Darkiplier, and he’s
an idiot.” Like, he’s just this weird emo kid. And then I stepped back from
that, like, I stepped back. And you can even- in that time, when I was doing
those videos, in this era, I was not very happy. I was kind of… I was
pessimistic about a lot of things. And I felt like that bled through in a lot
of things I did. And that’s why even October of last year I literally made Darkiplier
an emo character. And then when we were getting to this, I thought about it
like very carefully and I thought back to why I did it originally, and I did it
originally because, well, Darkiplier wasn’t even a thing. Darkiplier was not a
thing when I was making those videos. I just wanted to make some creepy stuff.
And then I thought about that, and I was like if I want to make a statement
about who this is, I need to own that and I need to put something out there
that is not ambiguous, because I realize that’s where I went wrong. I didn’t
have a solid character so obviously, people would come up with their own
versions, they would fill in the gaps where they saw fit. So, when I made this I
had to embrace it fully and fine-tune it down to exactly where I wanted. When you
choose the “fake” choice carrying through to this one, I really wanted that to
come through, except at the end to this video, where it gets silly, but that’s
because the real me comes in and the real me’s an idiot. And I’ve actually
watched this over and over again because I’m listening to the takes I put in
here and I’m listening to my inflection and my tone, my demeanor and I’m
imagining like how to refine it better next time when I bring him back, like
how to do it better.
Tyler: I remember now, I set up
Mark: Yeah, you did. You set up
the table we had to change it out for clear glasses because the green screen
was reflecting through. But yeah, even this, like the intersplices of anger, and
this is me getting real deep in the meta of Darkiplier, like if that’s even a
thing that can be- let me just pause it here. I don’t read too much into this
but if there’s something that I want to take seriously, I want to actually do right.
So, in my mind, Darkiplier is an entirely different person from me. But, much
like Warfstache, doesn’t obey the laws of physics. He exists in another world
entirely and bleeds through into this one. This is sounding really nerdy of me.
Tyler: I remember the Warfstache
Mark: So Completely unironically,
Darkiplier is a completely separate entity from who I am. But, he admires what
I’ve accomplished, and he’s very much… people picked up on this, and people
thought it was really creepy, because it’s what I wanted. He’s a social
manipulator. He is literally, 100% manipulative. He leads you into this false
sense of security, and he wants you to trust him because he wants to take
advantage of you. That is literally what I wanted for Darkiplier. And how
creepy and scary that actually is from the surface. Especially in this first
bit, where he says, “If dinner is what you want, then I can provide.” And I wanted
this to come across in a seductive way while also masking, like, this burning
rage inside that breaks through the suave nature of it. That was my clue to
reveal he’s not your friend. He’s not here to help you. He’s here to use you. And
that also came across when I was thinking about, like, the effects. Like, his
image shatters, he separates because he’s not entirely kept together, you know
what I mean? So, I wanted like the drastic impacts of the rage pulling back
suddenly to the calm nature and the demeanor and this last one, I was thinking
was especially telling. It’s not me trying to break through, it’s his shell
Kathryn: I love that.
Mark: Yeah? It’s my favorite of
all of them.
Kathryn: That’s one’s my favorite.
I have legitimately just gone and watched that bit.
Kathryn: It’s really good.
Mark: Oh, thank you.
Kathryn: I really like that.
Mark: Yeah. And number 1 the
visuals work hard on this one, but nailing the audio- that high-pitched ringing
that a lot of people were like wow that really hurts my ears, that was by
design. That was supposed to hurt because listening to him- a lot if
inspiration for him comes from G-man from Half-life 2 and 1, like this weird interdimensional
person that seems human but is obviously not and doesn’t obey the laws of
physics, and is just like this shell of a person that’s in a suit. Not a suit,
literally a human suit, and is trying to figure out how to puppet it right that
you believe him, but he’s really good at it. And that’s where the scariness of Darkiplier,
I think, really comes from, is because he seems like someone you can trust, and
he will manipulate you, and take advantage of you, and literally use you, and
to me that’s terrifying. Like that’s the antithesis of what I want to be and so
if I’m going to make an opposite version of me, he’s gonna be the fucking worst.
Like worse than any romantic story can ever bring about. He’s fucking awful.
Amy: It was convenient, though, I like
the way it goes from Relax to this, like the video “Relax,” because then people
were not expecting this. But it’s so nice to have it on Valentine’s Day. It
works so well.
Mark: And then came the bullshit
transition that we had to do. So, this is comical in a way.
Amy: It doesn’t drag it though.
Mark: Yeah it doesn’t drag. You
get the scary. Tyler’s here-
Tyler: In Mark’s suit, which I
have fit in, but not the pants.
Mark: He didn’t fit, we forgot to
get a tie, like, we printed out a mask, and I looked at this and was like I could
try to make this creepy, and then I went, I objectively can’t. Let me throw in
some punch sound effects.
Tyler: I have to make sure, cause-
Mark: He couldn’t see shoot.
Tyler: No, I couldn’t, and I had
to keep moving the mask cause there was one time we did this that the mask
ended up completely on the side of my head and I was just like, hey Mark, you can’t
touch my face.
Amy: The convenient thing about this,
though, with all the glitches is that you can hide stuff with it.
Tyler: Yeah, and there’s a reason I
never let go of Mark I have no clue where anything is.
Mark: Yeah, oh man. Oh, this, oh
my god. Oh, and secret Easter egg- you know who Dark is because he doesn’t have
a shadow. Totally intentional and by design.
i have so many requests, and i’m gonna write them all, but this story is very true. I have legit had a migraine for three days and I don’t want to write a request and it be absolutely terrible. I want to give you all the best request I can give you. So enjoy this imagine that is going to be complete shit.
You knew it was going to be a bad day, considering your headache from yesterday has yet to go away. Yesterday you were able to stay home, in the dark, drinking coffee and water, watching movies. Today, not so much.
You promised Shawn that you would go with him to his press stuff, and then once he was done he was going to take you out.
You get out of bed, bracing yourself against the wall as the movements made you dizzy. The pounding in your head taking over all you can hear.
“BABE!” Shawn shouts as he walks into your apartment. You groan and rub your forehead. “Are you up?” He asks walking into your bedroom. “Oh good morning.”
“Why are you yelling?” You ask grabbing jeans from your dresser.
“Am I yelling? I’m sorry.” He says quieter.
“Good morning.” You smile at him.
“Still coming today, so excited to introduce you to a few people.” He says beaming at you. You smile slightly and nod, walking to the bathroom.
You quickly change and down some water and an Excedrin.
“Ready?” He asks as you walk out.
“Yep.” You say taking his hand and following him out to his jeep.
“So we are talking about SM3 today and then,” Shawn goes on about his day and looks over smiling. You aren’t really paying attention, the pounding in your head becoming to over powering, but you smile and nod at him.
He went off on his interviews and other promo stunts. You lean against the wall next to you, after a woman walked by with a plate full of food and wave of nausea hit you.
You rest your hand against your forehead and sigh, you really wish you could go lay down right now.
“Baby! Are you ready for lunch?” Shawn asks, really loudly.
“Shawn stop yelling.” You groan standing straighter.
“Am I yelling again?” He asks himself looking over at Geoff, who just shrugs.
“Yes.” You groan and take a seat on the couch.
“Here want a sandwich.” He asks offering you one.
“No, no thanks.” You push his hand away.
He stares at you and then looks at his team and he must say something because they all leave silently.
“Baby?” He says softly sitting next to you. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah I’m fine.” You lie.
“No you aren’t, you a short with me today. Don’t want to eat anything and you keep leaning against the wall closing your eyes, rubbing your forehead.”
“Fine, honestly I have a migraine and you’re making it worse.” You whisper.
“What?” He whispers.
“I’m sorry, that was rude.”
“No don’t be sorry, I’m sorry. I didn’t know you weren’t feeling good. I’m sorry I’m making it worse.” He says looking away.
“Shawn stop, I should have told you before I came with you today.”
“Come on.” He says standing up and offering his hand. You take is and he pulls you up.
“Whoa wait a second.” You say leaning against him, the dizziness back.
“What?” He asks concerned.
“I just got a little dizzy, give me a second and it will go away.”
“Are you sure?”
“Shawn it’s been like this all day, it will go away”
When you think you’re good you start to walk, him following closely. When you stumble on your feet and reaches out and grabs you so don’t fall.
“That’s it.” He says picking you up.
He is now holding you bridal style and you tuck your face into his neck wrapping your arms around his neck.
“Hey Andrew.” He calls out softly. Andrew walks over. “Cancel the rest of my day, I’m going home.”
“If she isn’t feeling good I can have Geoff take her so you can finish.” Andrew says.
Andrew has never really enjoyed the fact that you distract Shawn so easily.
“No she’s fine, I’m the one not feeling well.”
“Then why are you carrying her?”
“Why aren’t you carrying her?” Shawn sasses back.
“Shawn.” You hiss into his neck.
“Cancel it okay?” He says walking past Andrew.
Once out side he lets out a breathy laugh and helps you into his car.
“Shawn why did you do that?” You ask.
“Priorities.” He shrugs closing your door. You smile to yourself and wait for him to get in.
“Love.” Shawn slightly shakes your shoulder. You roll over and notice that you are in bed.
“How did I get here?”
“You fell asleep on the car ride home, I brought you in here. You’ve been asleep for about two hours. I’m sorry to wake you but I need to know if you’re feeling better, it’s eating me alive.”
“No my head still hurts.” You sigh rolling closer to him. He lets his hand start to feel your forehead and then combs his fingers through your hair.
“When was the last time you took something?”
“This morning when you picked me up.”
“That was like almost 8 fucking hours ago.” He says getting up and rushing to his bathroom. He comes back with a glass of water and pills.
“Thank you.” You whisper as you take the medication.
“Can I do anything else? I can go to the store and get you your favorite snacks and a few movies.” He says pacing around the room.
“Shawn.” You say making him stop. Which you silently thank god because it was making you dizzy again. “Can you just cuddle?”
“Fucks sake, I’ve been dying to do that since we got home.” He says climbing into bed.
“Why didn’t you?”
“I didn’t want to wake you or make it worse.” He says laying next to you. You roll over into his side and practically wrap yourself around him. Legs tangling.
“I didn’t mean it.” You whisper against his chest.
“When I said you were making it worse, I didn’t mean it. I don’t know why I said it. I didn’t,” You take a breath. “You always make me feel better, and at the time I just wanted you to hold me and you couldn’t and that’s what was making it worse, that you couldn’t hold me.”
“Y/n, if you would have just told me I would have stopped and did what ever you needed. You come first, how many times do I have to tell you that.”
“I know I just hate being sick around you.” You whisper.
“Because when you’re sick you are so strong, you still perform and travel and go around and be The Shawn Mendes.” You say sighing.
“Okay, yeah I still perform when I have a stuffed nose, but when I have a migraine I stop every thing and stay in my hotel. You still go to work and school when you have a cold. You still went to Aaliyah’s tournament when you felt like throwing up, you are the superhero here.”
“Sure. Because you aren’t a superhero at all.”
“When have I ever ‘saved the day’?”
“Today, with Andrew. You told him you were the one feeling sick when he didn’t want you to leave because I was the one sick. When that guy at the party tried to grab me.” You say starting to go down your list. “Every morning when you call or wake up next to me.”
“Ok that was really cute.” He says smiling at you.
“You’re really cute.”
“How’s the head?”
“Not much better.”
“Come here.” He says pulling you up onto his chest. He starts rubbing your back and you hide yourself into his neck. “Go back to sleep babe, I’m here.” He says kissing the top of your head.
don’t ever remember my dad being normal. He was always a little
strange. The man was secretive and closed off, and all his attempts at
acting like a father rose the hairs on the back of my neck. It seemed
forced. I don’t think I ever got used to that. There was no need,
because he didn’t keep that up for long. By the time I was 5, I didn’t
have a dad. What I had after that was a boss. Maybe an owner. Definitely
not a dad.
He fully opened up as a person around that time. He brought a little
girl into our home. She was small, but she was older than myself, too.
Maybe 7 or 8. Her face was red and raw with tears. “Sam, this is your
new little sister, Maria.” Before I could react, she spoke up between
small sobs. “No, mister. I don’t know you. My name is Claire. Please
take me home to my mommy, I promise that I won’t tell.” By the time she
finished what she was saying, she was barely forming coherent sentences.
That’s when I saw my Dad stop being my dad. With one fluid motion, he
swung his arm, hitting her in the face and knocking her back on her ass.
I jumped up, too afraid and confused to do much of anything, but
still frightened nonetheless. I was young, but I’d seen enough
television to know that normal families didn’t do these things. “Sam,
you sit your ass down or I’ll put you in the ground, you hear me?” Thus
marked the loss of my father. Later, as I listened to the quiet cries of
the girl, now locked in the room next to mine, he sat me down and
explained that he wasn’t my father. He told me things a 5 year old
should never hear. My life changed forever. I was a mistake.
The little girl was with us for a while. My dad left me at home while
he went to the mall, buying all kinds of nice things for Maria. Claire.
Whatever. He probably blew $500. The weeks afterward were strange,
disgusting, and violent all at the same time. At the best, she would
play along with his games and he would be happy. At the worst, I would
have to listen to her screams as he did unspeakable things to her in the
next room. After, when the screaming would stop, he would come to me
and give me the same speech.
“This happens because you aren’t right, you understand? You should
have been born a girl. We wouldn’t have to do this. She’s going to die
someday because you’re trash.” He would walk to the door and finish with
“Remember, Sam. No one out in that world will ever love you. If you try
to leave, I’ll find you and I’ll kill you.”
Maria died about three months after my dad took her. This day wasn’t
her first attempt at escape, but instead it was her last. Truly, I do
not know if my father meant to kill her or not. He became consumed in
his rage and I fought back tears as he continued to hit her and hit her,
over and over again. Her little light went out as she choked on blood,
gurgling sounds coming from her throat. She was buried in our back yard,
right next to the playset that my father bought a year before. After
that, he became nervous to the point where he packed me up and we
started off on the road.
We lived like that for years. Sometimes, we’d live somewhere as long
as a year, but that was the extent of it. On a good year, he’d take two
or three girls without so much as a second look. People didn’t
necessarily suspect him, though. He was a psycho, but the man was smart
too. He would falsify documents and references, getting himself jobs as
close to children as possible. I remember, one time, he was hired on to
be an ice cream truck driver. He snatched up a little girl he called
Gloria right in front of her house. He somehow managed to finish his
route, too. She only lasted two months.
We Fight, We Breakup, We Fuck, We Makeup- Derek Luh Smut
Request: Could I request an imagine with Derek where we’ve been together for 2 years and we get into a huge fight but we make up with something a bit smutty
Warnings: Cursing and I’ve never written smut before so this might be crappy 🙈😩
I was sitting at home scrolling through Instagram and checking out my Twitter mentions while watching Catfish simultaneously. I put my phone down for a couple seconds to channel surf when I hear a car pull into the driveway.
Derek’s home from the studio. Finally. Lately Derek has been going to the studio and coming back late, but I’ve always fallen asleep before he gets back. I hope there’s nothing I should be worried about.
My thoughts are soon stopped in place when I hear the keys jingle in the door it opens ever so slightly. He walks in and a gust of wind blows through the house. I’m suddenly slapped in the face by a strong scent of alcohol mixed with… weed.
Is he serious right now? We’ve talked about this shit, over and over and he thinks he can get away with it?! No. Not today. Before he sees me, I turn around and walk towards the staircase and sit on the fourth step, my feet resting on the third. Phone in hand, and ready to yell.
He closes the door behind him and stops in his tracks when he sees me sitting on the steps. “Hey baby. How are you,” Derek smiles. I look at him up and down and notice that his eyes are bloodshot red. He’s high right now.
When he notices that I don’t reply, he asks, “What’s wrong, baby?” Still ignoring his questions, I finally speak up. “Did you have fun at the ‘studio’, Derek?,” I ask putting air quotes around studio. “Um, yeah. I got a lot done today,“he lied straight through his teeth. His perfect white teeth that seemed to blind people whenever he smiled. Fuck, Y/N focus.
“Oh really, like what?,” I challenged. I wanted to catch him in his dirty ass lie. “Um, I published a song, wrote some more lyrics, and here I am.”
“Really, Derek? Because you were gone since 8 tonight and currently it’s 2 in the morning. You’re trying to tell me that it took you 6 hours to write a couple songs and publish one? Do you think I’m stupid Derek?,” I ranted standing up on the stairs from getting angry.
“Okay, I’m gonna need you to chill because you’re raising your voice.” Was I raising my voice? I didn’t even notice.
I stepped down that stairs and made my way over to Derek, bringing his clothes towards my nose. Just to show him that I knew he was lying. I look up at him and I see he has a worried expression on his face.
“Huh, smells a little familiar don’t you think? The perfect mix of alcohol and oh what’s that? Weed?,” I say with anger and irritation laced in my voice. “So Derek, is the studio your final answer because I caught you in a damn lie and right now I’m very aggravated.”
He stays silent.“That’s what I thought. You know what Derek, I am so fucking tired of you always lying to me! I’m over it,” I say raising my voice. Yeah, I noticed this time.
“Woah, what do you mean always lying to you? When have I ever lied to you, Y/N?,” Derek asked raising his voice to same level as I did.
“Hmm,” I pretended to think. “How about the fact that you told me you were going to the studio when in reality you went to the club, you promised you’d stop smoking but look at where we are right now and let’s not forget - -.” He cut me off,“OK hold up, who said I smoked weed. You’re always assuming shit, and it’s getting on my fucking nerves,” he yelled at the top of his weed filled lungs. He can’t fool me.
“Oh, I’m assuming shit? Derek, your eyes are bloodshot red, you smell like fucking weed. I’m so done with your shit,” I say walking up the stairs. I get into our shared bedroom, grab my Adidas duffel bag and start stuffing my shit in there.
I jump up in fear when I feel snake their way around my waist. As soon as my brain proceses that it’s Derek, I immediately shake him off of me considering I was still pissed at him. “C'mon babe it was one blunt,” Derek whined. “So you did lie, you’re a fucking, ugh,” I grunted being too angry to finish my sentence.
“Come on, Y/N, we’ve been together for 2 fucking years and you want to leave just because I smoked a blunt tonight,” Derek protested. “It’s not even that Derek,” I say turning around. “It’s the fact that you promised me you’d stop smoking and you went behind my back and still did it. You probably even smoked this whole week, but got away with it because I fell asleep before you got back. So you know what, yes I am leaving,” I say ever so calmly and turning back around to finish packing my stuff.
I’m almost done packing when I am pulled from behind and spun around. I feel pain in my back when I am slammed against the wall with two hands on each side of my body.
I am confused as to what’s going on when I hear Derek whisper,“ I guess now I have to fuck you to remind you how good I am when I’m high.” I almost moan at his words. He moves his lips down to my neck and starts kissing it roughly. I can tell there going to be hickies there in the morning.
Derek continues his actions until I moan. He whispers in my ear again,“Bounce.” I jump up and wrap my legs around Derek’s waist.
Let’s just say we had a lot of fun that night. Maybe I’ll let Derek keep smoking weed.
A/N: Thanks you guys so much for reading. This was requested by the lovely lady: almoststupendousparadise. I love you guys and I’ll talk to y'all soon ✌️🤘👋
hello shukamod this is embarrassing but what is a UO that you and other people that watch the live is talking about?
Nononono it’s totally fine! I’ve found that it’s actually really hard to learn about this stuff unless you’ve actually been to a live concert or viewing. Which… as some of you may know from experience, is excruciatingly difficult if you’re an overseas fan (꒪⌓꒪)
The short answer: UO stands for “Ultra Orange”, and is a chemical glowstick that glows bright orange, often only for a couple of minutes before it burns out. Because of how short-lived they are, people usually save them for their favorite songs at concerts.
The long answer: I’m gonna talk about glowsticks under the cut! Yayyy :D Skip to the Cyalume section for the full explanation on UOs :)
Guy: Exactly bae just like i told u i had to work late at the office
Girl: Well we have Dove soap, Dove soap scent fades in 6 hours and 33 minutes, you left at 8 am this morning its 9 pm now… your soap scent is 19 minutes and 33 seconds old
Girl: Probably took u about 8 minutes to dry off and get dressed and about 1 minute for a goodbye hug and kiss, so I know she live only 10 minutes away, SO WHATS THE BITCH NAME AND WHERE DID U MEET HER
i've been puzzled by Critical Role for such a long time like i know it's a bunch of people playing D&D but how does it WORK??? and how can you binge it?? i checked an episode at random and it wAS 4 HOURS LONG HOW ???
Oh man, I honestly had these same exact questions/concerns before I started watching. It literally took me 8 months to finally decide to give the show a try and I just cannot express how glad I am I did. It seems so massive and overwhelming, but I’m gonna legit answer these questions and only hijack your ask to gush about the show a little to tempt you in.
how does it WORK??? I knew veryyyy little about the mechanics of D&D going in. I’d never played any tabletop RPG (though I’d been interested in trying one for a long time), and pretty much my understanding was the really general ‘it’s whatever you can imagine/you do whatever you want to do and you roll dice to see if you’re successful’ etc., and the Community episodes where they play D&D. I was not quite sure how this was going to logistically be something you watch long term (as a non-participant) nor if I was going to be interested in/connect with characters that I can’t really see—I’m a pretty visual person. The idea of D&D made sense to me logically before I watched Critical Role, but I didn’t really get it until I started watching. So, tbh the best way to understand how it works is to give it a shot. (If you’re like me you won’t understand everything immediately—you pick it up as you go, and what you don’t understand of the mechanics really doesn’t matter because you can still understand the story they’re telling.)
Logistically speaking, everyone is visible on screen at the same time: 7-8 players on one half of the screen, and the Dungeon Master (DM), Matt, on the other side. Matt basically describes where the characters are (physically and narratively), and presents them with a catalyst (e.g., a character asking them for help, a villain attacking, etc.) that starts the action and the players decide how to respond. Really, the three core aspects in my opinion are 1) collaborative storytelling, 2) improvisational theatre, and 3) logic puzzles.
and how can you binge it?? Oh man. I mean this literally: I was watching/listening to Critical Role every single chance I got. I devoured it. Minimum of three episodes a day, and forcing myself to go to sleep and leave it. There are a lot of reasons I could binge it:
The storytelling. It’s so damn good. One of the most narratively rewarding stories I’ve watched or read in years. The world-building is fantastic and has no loose ends (while feeling MASSIVE and open and real). The plot is interesting, well-planned, and character-driven; everything feels meaningful in one way or another. The NPCs Matt introduces are all rich and compelling and unique. And—something I value immensely in story that I rarely get—there are consequences. Honest-to-god consequences for everything, and it always feels appropriate for the action, and well-timed (things don’t always bite you immediately! But also sometimes they do!).
The players. They make such ridiculous, amazing choices that keep the story unpredictable but realistic. All of them have stellar comedic timing, but can also make me cry at the drop of a hat. They care so deeply about the characters and invest everything into the game/their interactions, and it just feels rewarding to invest my time in them and their world. Not a single issue connecting to the characters—they sell them 100%, but they do feel separate from the actors in a good way.
Found family. The chemistry of this group is amazing—it’s a group of real life best friends and it feels like it, constantly—and it comes through in both the players’ relationships and the characters’. It’s just fun, and warm, and comforting to see people (real and fictional) who care as much about each other as these guys do. It’s just a good time. I see my friends in them, and I see friends I would like to have.
You can have it on in the background. Logistically speaking, this is how you can binge it. While it can be something you sit and watch—trust me—it’s also essentially a filmed podcast, so you have have it in the background, or listen to it without video like I did while I was doing my dumb data entry job. (Bless my boss for letting me listen to stuff.) And, as much as the completist in me hates to say this, it’s likely you’ll tune out occasionally; the long fights can become number-crunching heavy/repetitive, and they do have some circuitous conversations when they’re planning what to do.
You’ll wanna go into the tag. If you don’t care about spoilers this won’t mean as much to you, but I was dying to dip into tumblr to find fanart and headcanons and gifs and stuff, but I didn’t want to spoil myself. So there was that kind of urgent push for me to catch up AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE!!! so I could go looking. Plus, because there is a new episode every single week, there’s none of that pesky urge to put off watching something until a hiatus, you know?
i checked an episode at random and it wAS 4 HOURS LONG HOW ??? And sometimes more than that! They do SO MUCH STUFF each week (plot and character development and fighting and relationship progression and they don’t rush ANYTHING), they have to make so many decisions, and they just burn through those 3+ hours. (And they usually end up stepping in it somehow and having to make a detour to clean up their own mess, lbr.) Honestly, these episodes look fucking long, and they are, really. But the time stamps are a bit off at a quick glance; about the first half of the series has inflated run times—fans started sending in gifts they would open at the end, they did Q&As, they had subscriber milestone awards, etc.—so some of that is skip-able. It’s fun, but definitely stuff you can go back and watch once you’re caught up and out of content. There are also a few one-shot episodes here and there that you can also skip until you catch up. (Definitely worth watching though, later!)
So, it is a little less than it looks like. But truthfully, it just goes by really fast. You get sucked in. The action goes fast. You’re dying to see what happens next. The biggest issue I had with this series was starting it, so honestly for anyone interested in this series I recommend just watching the first episode. Don’t worry about reading up on what happened before they started streaming the show, don’t worry about knowing who the characters are, or what it’s going to look like. It won’t make full sense until you just dive in. (That being said, if you want a reference theargentumlupine’s primer is fantastic and was very comforting to have going in.) It seems unthinkable when you’re looking at 2384975987295 hours of canon, but as early as episode ~40 I started worrying about being out of episodes
As some of you may have seen on my Instagram stories, I spent the past week painting these murals on the walls of my lil’ sister’s house. They were a belated gift for her marriage and her first child. Her family moved from Colorado to Alabama last year for her husband’s work. She, like me, misses her home state and the beautiful nature found there.
Thus, I painted these iconic scenes. Pine trees for the new baby’s room, aspens for the master bedroom, a waterfall for my niece’s room, and the continental divide for the guest room. Each room is 8 feet tall, except the master which is significantly taller. (Largest paintings I’ve ever made!)
This project took up many hours and tubes of paint, but I enjoyed it, and they loved the end result. Win-win!
6 hour/page comic jam was a mistake and i took like 8 hours bc i couldn’t think of anything for half of these pages- :’)))) i blame @captainjellyroll for dragging me into this— also hello style inconsistencies how are you doing?
so tl;dr on the “plot”: alfie falls in love with artie, who is already dating someone, but artie dumps his bf to be with alfie. they date for a while but obviously they have a lot of ups and downs. artie pulls the same thing on alfie that he did to his previous bf(s) where he makes’em fall in love with him and then leaves them for someone else. alfie comes to that realization and decides to let artie go despite still loving him and his asshole self. <3
sorry i needed some angst and this is how it ended up- also i had to pick and choose lyrics bc i really wanted to do the final lyrics from the song for the ending so if they seem kinda out of place, that’s why. :’^)
