Most of us guessed that Navy would end up betraying everyone by the end of the episode. 

I don’t think most of us expected that having her go from this:

would be really good for Lapis’ mental health.

And despite certain people’s fears about certain story boarders… this was actually very much in character for her. I think it’s pretty safe to assume that Lapis has always been cynical, even in her pre mirror days. After she escaped she went from cynical to detached and apathetic. Not an unexpected defense mechanism for someone who was trapped in an inanimate object for 6,000 years. But she has made progress. She trusts Steven and Peridot. Enough not only to express her concerns, but to essentially make a confession.

Life on Earth is really confusing. It took me a long time to get use to it. I’m still getting use to it.

Given everything that’s happened to her on Earth, it’s only natural that she’s having a hard time adjusting. But she’s just confessed her biggest insecurity: she knows she’s having a hard time dealing with what she’s been through, while having to get use to to living a normal life on the planet where her greatest traumas happened. Before the rebellion she would have done her job and left for the next planet, Earth having been a distant memory by this time. But now she can never leave. Earth has to become home. 

She wants to move on, but feels guilty about how difficult actually doing that is.

So here comes this I-Insta-Love-All-Things-Earth ruby, who seems freakishly well adjusted from the moment she crashes face first into the planet. Never mind that she was lied to not once, but twice, by the crystal gems. Never mind that she was blasted out into space and abandoned while they stole her ship. All is instantly forgiven and she just wants to be a part of their happy family.

Worse yet? The people Lapis cares most about just buy it. They go right along with it as though Navy’s behavior is perfectly normal. It took time for Lapis to even begin to be okay with the idea of living in Earth and forgiving the crystal gems- she’s still working on it, and it’s painful. She’s worked so hard for every inch of progress she’s made, and here’s someone who’s seemingly able to move on the same day they got to Earth.

I just don’t get it. Why is it so easy for her when it was so hard for me? 

So when the perfectly well adjusted Navy turned out to be a gleeful sociopath  gleefully hell bent on revenge, everything fell into place.

Navy’s sudden but inevitable betrayal was the best thing to happen for Lapis’ mental health to date.

So what’s the take away from this? 1) People react differently to trauma. 2) Just because someone seems well adjusted doesn’t mean they are. 3) It’s okay to take a long time to heal from your traumas. It’s okay for it to be a constant work in progress. It’s okay not to be okay. 

And at the end of the day, that realization can almost feel like happiness. 

Over the years I have struggled tremendously with my sexuality, and have been in a state of denial about who I really am for a long long time. I thought that maybe if I just gave another guy a chance it would all make sense, and it would feel right.. when this didn’t happen I would beat myself up endlessly over it, not mention all the understanding I got from fellow peers about me exploring my sexuality (this is heavy sarcasm folks PEOPLE IN HIGHSCHOOL WERE FUCKING TERRIBLE). Eventually I started to realize that maybe it’ll never be that way for me, and that’s okay. It took moving to another city entirely to embrace myself fully. I am blessed to have an amazing support system of friends, and some family, by my side. Each day that passes I become more in touch with who I really am, and slowly gain more happiness. It has been a hell of a fucking journey, but I’m happy to finally be here AND BE QUEER. HAPPY #nationalcomingoutday MY FELLOW PEEPS

i lived my life open garden. i loved weeds and wildflowers. something about you seemed better, all stable walls and home decor. it took me a long time to realize that you can paint a room yellow but you can’t make it warm. when i kissed you i always had to kiss first. holding your hand was an exercise in timing. i only had so many minutes before you let go. sorry, can’t hear you, the connection is dying. i really wanted to be yours. i really wanted it to work.

so we are about to enter the final hall, and we know this is the big one- the minions say the boss is here, it’s the last room, it has one way in, and it’s a throne room.

the only goal is to kill one spell-caster/dragon sage dudebro, so we develop a plan to have the main of the party attack in a typical fashion while my rouge sneaks to the back while invisible and lays a surprise deathblow.

Then, assuming combat doesn’t just end by the enemy’s morale- I would go full defense and make my way back with my killer acrobatics and caution. We were all mid level, so it wasn’t a terrible idea, and from the level of the mooks, it could save the meat-shields from a lot of smackdown.

so we cast all the necessary buffs and kicked open the ridiculously ornate throneroom door and begin combat

DM: (stopping for a sec to describe the room) there is a massive hall in front of you- the far side is a lofty stage formed of a tasteful combination of granite pilllars and decorative freezes. there are five beefy humans standing on the only stairs to the top of this 15 foot high area, where there’s a kinda scaly dude, who looks somewhere between exasperated and bored. [Me], you won initiative- you are invisible, what do you do?

Me: *observing that I would have to pass through the beef-bros square to get to scaleman* there’s a bonus for running up to a jump right?

DM: Uh, well, yes, but what does that-

Me: I run across the hall and jump up onto the stage.

DM: …*consults jumping rules*…okay, roll me that acrobatics.

Me: *rolls* so with my bonuses I got 29, how much is the run up worth again?

DM: well, you jumped. You broke records for how high humans have jumped in one go, and got like 8 foot off the ground, but you didn’t land on the platform or anything.

Me: I’m listed as 6 foot and change- can I grab the ledge?

DM: … okay, that’s reasonable. roll another acrobatics, minus 10 for quickened, I guess.

Me: *nat 20*

DM: *sigh* you’re on the platform.

Then the round proper hits and the party tries to draw the mooks off the stairs (since they don’t know I’m already past, and because it’s useful for them too) but it doesn’t work. the scale-bro casts a potshot at the fighter, but he makes the save. then it’s my turn again.

Me: I step up and sneak attack the guy *rolls well*

DM: unfortunately, before you do that, he takes an attack of opportunity and *rolls* hits you. *rolls* take 36.

Me: *slack jawed*

Me: wasn’t I invisble??

DM: yes? and you took damage.

Me: how did-

DM: he had see invisible up this entire time. that’s a really standard buff among dragons, and I didn’t make you roll stealth checks. Honestly, I thought you would pick it up- but then you ran right up to him.

and that is how I ended up spending almost the entire battle, invisible and pretending to be unconscious at the villain’s feet because I had 4 HP.

1D Rebranding and Eventual Reunion: GP vs. Fandom Perception

So I’m seeing a lot of tension an unrest over the way that the members of 1D, Harry in particular, are distancing themselves from the band as they embark upon their solo careers (ie, Harry, or whatever intern runs Harry’s sm scrubbing his twitter clean of 1D mentions). I know people are anxious about this, and I understand that anxiety, but I want to offer a different perspective: I think this could be a good thing, not just for their solo ventures, but for 1D as a whole. Hear me out on this one, long windily and under the cut.

How to Annotate Literature

Many times language and literature classes require students to annotate the books that are given to them, but in many cases tips and advice on how to do so is lacking. I will be sharing my personal strategy for efficient and successful annotating that will not only help your understanding of the text but also gain the love of your teachers!

The tips have been divided into 5 components, each with their own explanation.

Sticky Tabs are Your Best Friend

I don’t know how I would manage to annotate without my sticky tabs. They help me organize and navigate the book before the reading, remind me what to look for while i’m going through the text and help me find whatever I may need once I get to further analysis for the class. 

Create a key for your tabs, personally I use five colors each having a few specific purposes based on where I place them in the book. Most stickies are accompanied by a specific note that will remind me of what I wanted to point out, these stick out of the right margin. 

  • Pink- Anything to do with characters, be it development or certain traits to remember. It can also be used for when you have questions about character related aspects of the text.
  • Orange- Refers to setting, in plays it is also applicable for stage directions.
  • Yellow- Is used for literary devices and use of language (tone, diction, patterns) and syntax, if there is a particular word the author used or a structure you want to take note of, this is the color to use. 
  • Green- Applicable to any important plot events, notable scenes or things that you think will be significant later in the story.
  • Blue- Themes and context of said ideas, anything to do with time, place and space in which the text takes place. It can also relate to how your context (a student reading a book for a literature course) impacts your perception of the text.

These are the things teachers usually look out for and it is certainly useful in any kind of further task! 

The top and bottom margins can be used to divide the book in to sections, such as chapters or scenes, mark the most important pages and to also highlight text to text connections. These colors you can pick yourself!

I do not recommend having more than 5 sticky tabs per page, otherwise it gets too crowded and they lose their purpose! (but you will still need to buy aaa lloootttt)

This is my key for the book I am currently annotating, Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. 

Don’t Overdo it With the Highlighter

Find one color highlighter that you like the most and use it to mark explicit words or phrases that catch your attention, you can also use them in correlation with you sticky tabs! 

I prefer to use a yellow highlighter because it seems to bleed the least, and I usually use it in relation to the the yellow and blue tabs because those are the ones that relate to the most detailed and minute parts of the text. Once again you can find your own preference! But don’t overdo it, otherwise, like the tabs, the highlighter will lose its function to highlight important points. 

This is an example of how much highlighting I usually do. For non-fictional texts or parts of a book (like in the introduction you see here) I reserved highlighter for dates and names. 

Have a Conversation With the Author

This is one of the first tips that my high school teacher gave me and it’s really one of the most important ones to remember. And I know, it may sound kinda silly, but I find that it really helps me in developing my ideas and remembering exactly how I felt about a certain aspect of part of the text. 

Whether the text is fiction of non fiction, anything in between, you can always do these few things

  • Ask questions- As if you were going to get an answer, ask questions, write them down and write down as many as you want. Writing things down helps people remember so then it is more likely that in a class discussion you will be able to recall your queries or wonders. 
  • If you don’t like something, or you’re surprised by something, write it down! Use exclamation marks, use words that you would use in a regular conversation. I always write ‘WOW!!’ or ‘OMG’ when i’m especially impressed, and having such vocal- well written vocally- emotions will bring you closer to the subject of the text. 
  • Talk to the characters as well, if you are questioning a character’s actions ask them and provide an explanation as to why you speculate they may have acted a certain way. Not only does that further contribute to your involvement (also making things more entertaining) but it also deepens your thought!

What i’m trying to say is write down anything that comes to mind, your first response is your true response, and it is a valuable addition to your notes! And if you want to write a whole essay in between the lines… Actually, i’ll come back to that later! 

Pens, not Pencils 

I used to make notes completely in pencil but my approach changed when I realized that overtime the pencil would rub off and get illegible. I think it was because I used my book so much, but having switched to pen I realized that it helps me in quite a few other things as well. 

The good thing about pen is that you can’t erase it and let’s say you started writing down a note, scan down the page and realize what you are taking a note of is completely wrong. That’s ok! That’s actually really good! Don’t scribble out what you just wrote down, but instead continue and explain why you may have thought a certain way and what your understanding is now. That relates really closely to the previous note. 

Evidently pen also appears darker on the page, then there’s no possibility of it ever disappearing. It also won’t smudge or bleed as long as it’s ballpoint! That’s a good thing when drawing arrows between lines, underlining in addition to your highlights and circling/boxing whatever you deem necessary.

Time, Effort and Commitment

It’s clear that this post took me a while to make, and it took me a while to develop this system with all of the things that I have considered. So it must be self evident that using this type of annotation won’t be quick. It might get tiring at some times, and for me it really does, but at the end I find that it always pays off! You have to stay committed to this technique, you have to put in the same amount of effort for every page, which means you need time. So here are a few final general tips I will leave you with.

  • Don’t procrastinate! As goes for any task, and this one more than any, don’t waste time getting to it! I advice you check how many pages you have in total and make sure that you do a certain amount per day (usually 5-10 pages a day is good!)
  • If you go off on massive tangents in the side bars, make sure that you don’t get too distracted by them because they will take up a lot of your time. But one now and then may be good! Be sure to mark it for later reference!
  • Play mind games with yourself. This one is actually pretty interesting but it personally gets me a long way. If you have 20 pages left, don’t look at it as 20 pages but instead as 4 times 5, then the amount will seem a lot more manageable! It’s a kind of self encouragement!
  • That can also be said by looking now and then at how far your bookmark has moved through the book and giving yourself a pat on the back for all of you hard work!

Yuri on Ice BD booklet translation (with Jun Shishido & Yuusuke Tannawa interview) - Volume 4

The full translation of the booklet of vol.4 is finally done… Actually, one of the reasons it took me so long is that I spent most of the time I was home from Thursday to Sunday watching Fuji TV’s live coverage of the World Championships, lol. And I’m glad I did because it was really exciting. It does make a difference to watch it live without knowing the results… I will work on the audio commentary and choreography part in the next few days, and hopefully on other stuff too.

The booklet has 3 parts:
1) Character introduction for Phichit, Chris and Guang-Hong.
2) “Topics”, in other words random curiosities. 
3) Interview with chief director Jun Shishido and screen designer Yuusuke Tannawa. Most of you will probably have no idea who they are (and their titles are by no means a good explanation of what their actual role was), but I really recommend reading this interview because it gives more insight on the creation process of YOI and maybe it helps understand how hard it is to animate figure skating. The parts in round brackets are exactly like they are in the original text, it’s not something I added.

The success rate of his quadruple jumps, which he started training for this season, is also high, and as China’s new ace he is expected to grow further in the second half of the season.
He has a shy personality, but at the same time he also uploads many selfies on the SNS. It seems that he also bought a lot of clothes during his training camp in Canada. Together with his friend Chulanont from Thailand and Japan’s Minami, he is called by fans “one of Asia’s 3 cutest skaters”.

TOPIC 1: Grand Prix Series

The 6 tournaments are always held in the same countries (the order may vary), but the location of the final changes every year, and this season it’s Barcelona in Spain. The participants are chosen based on their results in tournaments regulated by ISU (International Skating Union), their world ranking, recommendations by the host country etc.; however, each skater can only participate in a maximum of 2 tournaments. In addition, only up to 3 skaters from the same country can participate in the same category of the same tournament. The period when the skaters’ allocation is announced is somewhat of a festival among skating fans.

TOPIC 2: Quadruple Jump
(*at the moment of the Russia tournament)
One of the techniques that decide the game in male figure skating is quadruple jumps. Since the number and type of jumps greatly influences the score, recently it’s common for skaters to include multiple quadruple jumps in their programs. However, according to the rules the same jump can only be repeated a limited number of times, therefore skaters try new types of jumps and train hard to be able to have more quadruple jumps to put in their programs. Currently, 5 types of jumps except for the Axel have been successfully landed in official competitions. The one with the highest score is the Lutz, which top skaters such as Victor, Giacometti and JJ are using in their programs. The quadruple toeloop, which has the lowest score, is successfully used by young skaters such as Kenjirou Minami, Guang-Hong and Phichit too. Yuuri can jump the toeloop and Salchow and is currently training to master Victor’s trademark flip. After the Lutz, the flip is the jump with the highest score.

TOPIC 3: Support Item (cheering goods)
It often happens to spot flags and banners used as cheering goods in figure skating venues. After a performance flower bouquets and plushes are also thrown into the rink. Banners do not only feature the skater’s name and flag; sometimes they have a message or a portrait of the skater with which people try to show their support, and in some cases they are even made using photographs. Yuuri is often thrown plushes of food. The bouquets and plushes are picked up by children who are learning skating, usually called “flower girls” and “flower boys”.

TOPIC 4: Kiss & Cry
The kiss & cry is where skaters wait for their score after a performance. The name comes from the fact that it’s a place where athletes can experience both happy and sad feelings. Normally the skater and their coach will sit there, but in some cases there might be people from a country’s federation or the choreographer too. In many venues there will be a microphone, therefore skaters can also send messages to their family and fans. If you listen to the broadcast closely you might be able to hear the athlete and coach reviewing the performance or other conversations.

Shishido: I’m the chief director, but in fact I did a lot of things. Director Yamamoto was too busy, so she mainly did sound and editing, and then since it’s an original story she focused on the story composition…
Tannawa: Shishido-san was like the site supervisor. We would ask things related to the story itself to director Yamamoto, but the one who actually took action and gave directions was Shishido-san. Though in the credits I appear as “screen designer”, the anime’s screen design was created by the director of photography, and my job in this series mainly consisted in creating the footage for PVs, OP etc. and checking the final product before delivery. I started working on the PV at the beginning of 2016. I asked director Yamamoto what kind of layout she had in mind, and decided how to set the visuals of the series. Regarding the contents of the episodes I also discussed with Shishido-san about various topics – for example, “this processing can be done with camerawork, this expression can be recreated with CG” – and shared this information with the involved work groups.

-Trial and error to create the huge amount of skating scenes.-

T: In figure skating athletes perform while continuously moving around, therefore it was extremely difficult to understand where an athlete was and in what direction he was skating in each frame. In the 1st episode we created a CG model of the skater based on the real choreography footage and had it skate in a rink created with 3DCG, then we followed it with tridimensional camerawork and used that footage as a base for the animation. It was a very elaborate process. However, we realized that it was impossible to continue using this method with the production schedule of a TV series, therefore we switched to a different method where we would create camerawork on a general background map. Also, after episode 5, for certain characters we preceded the creation of the key animation with 3DCG. The final animation is all done by hand, but by having a base to use as a reference it was possible to calculate the available time frame and create the animations accordingly, thus shortening the working time.
S: Even if you suddently ask the 3D staff to create figure skating animation, of course they have almost no knowledge of the jumps and techniques. They create the animation based on the reference footage, but they cannot express complex details such as how athletes balance their feet the moment they jump, so for that I and (figure skating animators) Abiko-san and Tatenaka-san adjusted the animation. Among the people working on the series, the only ones who had technical knowledge about figure skating were the 3 of us and director Yamamoto. And it’s not something that you can just explain verbally, so we took on all those jobs ourselves. We checked… everything, probably. Actually, until episode 4 the skating scenes were all created by Abiko-san and Tatenaka-san, so I didn’t need to check them, but from episode 5 the amount of skating scenes became so huge that we asked Tannawa-san and the others whether we could get help from the CG team… I completely trusted Tannawa-san, because I knew that if we explained what to do he would understand what was needed.
T: I basically asked what they couldn’t do, and we did all we could to make up for that and reduce their workload. We would never have finished the series otherwise. That’s why for this anime no one ever said “isn’t that your job?”. For every episode, everyone just fought toward completion.
S: Everyone took responsibility for their job and worked with extreme care, like no one was going to double-check what they did afterwards. We thought, “if we don’t do our best, this series will not make it to the broadcast, therefore we must all be responsible and work hard”…

-A scene you especially paid attention to.-

S: All the storyboards for the skating scenes were drawn by the director, but I drew them for quite a lot of daily life scenes. I especially like the scene where Yurio gives a pirozhki to Yuuri (in episode 9). I was particularly careful to make Yurio look cute. I wanted to show that, even though normally he is rude (to Yuuri), he actually rather trusts him and they do get along. I also like gag scenes, so I had fun with scenes such as the hug competition at the end of episode 9. Gag scenes do not need to be drawn as neatly as serious scenes, therefore I decided to animate them in a very comical and dynamic way.
T: I paid a lot of attention to the opening. The way we changed it in episode 11 to reflect the current story development is something I myself suggested to the director. Actually, only the opening of episode 1 was still incomplete when it was broadcasted. From episode 2 onwards it was always the same footage, but the viewers wrote a lot of comments about it (and were wondering whether it was changing every time). Since everyone was watching it every time without skipping it, we decided to really change it in the end.
S: My favorite character is Georgi Popovich! He’s a man who can talk about love seriously. He actually makes a few appearances since the 1st episode. When we were working on episode 1 we only had Kubo-sensei’s character plans and the storyboard saying “a character named Popovich is standing here”. We made him stand out a little because we understood that he would show up in the story later on. And what a character he was, when he was introduced in episode 6!
T: He was so striking that I was actually shocked! I like Popovich too. Also, among the programs, I like Yuuri’s FS “Yuri on ICE”. It’s the first song I listened to working for this series, and at that time I used it for the PV without knowing that it was going to be Yuuri’s FS. In the PV Yuuri is skating in Hasetsu with his slender appearance from episode 3 onwards, and (the character designer) Hiramatsu-san commented “it’s a wonderful video, but now we have to make him fat”. I remember thinking “what is he saying??” (LOL).

-The power of the support that reached the studio.-

S: When we were creating the anime we were so busy with the work at hand that we didn’t really realize how much of a response the series was having. However, we received lots of presents, food, goods and letters of support from fans.
T: Even items based on the contents of the series, like (retort-packed) borscht. That made us feel that fans were really supporting us because they liked the series, and it boosted our morale. Knowing that there were so many people watching and cheering on us motivated us to our best even it meant working overnight without sleeping.
S: The charm of this series is the love of the original creators, director Yamamoto and Kubo-sensei, that you can feel from it. It’s just so strong.
T: It also feels like you are touring various countries to follow Yuuri and the others and watch their matches. You can watch it with the eyes of a spectator and think “I didn’t know a lot about this athlete, but now I see how he skates”. I think that another element that allows viewers to really get into the world of the series is how not only the matches but also the skaters’ practice scenes and the back yard are drawn with lots of details. Everything is detailed, even the different shape of each skater’s blades. The director herself is full of very sincere love for figure skating, and that was transmitted to both the staff and the viewers.
S: The animation studio had a very nice atmosphere. It’s the first time that I’m working with Tannawa-san, but when I saw his work I realized right away that he was someone I could trust. Trust and unity are something you find in the staff of many series, but for this one it was especially strong.


On a side note, Kubo & Yamamoto went to see the Worlds in Helsinki and are now in St.Petersburg. I am confident it’s tourism but with a spoonful of location hunting… (What a timing, though. I hope none of you or your acquaintances were personally affected by what happened the other day in the subway)

I'd love to hear your thoughts on La La Land's ending! If you don't mind.

SO HERE WE GO. I’ve heard a lot of think pieces/complaining about how the movie is about hollywood, or white men saving jazz, or unrealistically fulfilling your dreams all at once, etc., but I don’t see how you can watch that ending and come away with those things. Sure, the movie dabbles in all of that, and you can make commentary on how unrealistic that is, or in the case of John Legend’s role in the movie, how shitty it is—but then, there’s that ending. That glorious, perfect pitched ending.

The last we see of Mia and Sebastian together, they’re making a choice many of us have or will make in our lives; a turning point in a relationship, where you have to choose what you’re willing to sacrifice, or give to keep the love that you have. They make what I would say, as a person who has made this very choice, the right choice, and seperate for the good of their careers. And realistically, painfully so, that is a lasting break—we jump five years, and things have happened that make their separation permanent (Mia is married, she has a child). That’s startling and, because it happens so quickly instead of the slow and quiet way that it occurs in real life, unbelievable. We think, they’re playing a trick on us, this can’t possibly be where this movie of sparkling lights and love songs is going to end. But the longer the scene goes on, and we see Mia in the car with her husband, so comfortable, it starts to set in, and then, even though we know it’s coming, when she sees the sign at his club—the sign she made for him—we feel the way she does. It’s been five years for her, and she has that space that we, as an audience, were not given from the main storyline, so she’s surprised, and suddenly longing, and that’s an emotion we can feel. 

But the ending isn’t about where Mia finds herself, it’s about Sebastian. He plays his song, and the fantasy begins for him and we get to go along with it. Mia may have moved on, but Sebastian is closer to us, he still feels that sting when he sees her, much worse then she felt. The cinematography here is beautiful, and the music carries us through it, and it’s satisfying, just to retrace the steps of where we have already been with these characters, to hear the same cords they sang together. You can’t tell me it didn’t hit you when, in the bar, the music swelled and he walked right up to kiss her. 

Because this is from Sebastian’s point of view, we see the way he wished it had been, how they could have stayed together, and it is so firmly planted in what he could have done differently. Mia still takes the audition, gets the job, goes to Paris, but he never takes that job with the band, he’s there at her show, he goes to Paris with her. His fantasy includes being there for her, in a way that he never really was during their relationship. He puts her, her dreams and ambitions, first, so that in the end, Mia ends up exactly where she is now, where she’s meant to be, but she’s married to him instead. And even while he’s thinking of it, the unreality of that situation bleeds in—through the film set, the Van Gogh-esque swirls of Paris. It could never have been real, because he was a different man then, he would have always made those choices. He had yet to learn his lesson.

In the end, they are able to smile at each other and part again, because this isn’t a love story. This is a story about growing up. It’s a story about how a person can mean so much to you during one point in your life, how they can change you, can take up all of the space in your world completely, and how much you can love them in that moment—and how beautiful that is. It isn’t lasting, it’s not guaranteed, it’s something you may regret and dwell on over and over later, but it is beautiful. Sebastian’s dream looks so unreal because not only did it not happen, it couldn’t have happened; there were a gulf of reasons why the two of them never would have worked out, even if he had gone with her to Paris. 

But they changed each other. They nudged each other towards their futures. They were each other’s turning point, towards success, their dreams, all the things that felt out of reach when they met. So when they said, before they parted, I will always love you, what they really meant was; I will always love what you have given me.

You guys had been friends for enough time for Damian to realize that what he felt for you wasn’t simple tolerance.

Oh no. Everyone could see it and it made him wish he could murder all his brothers in their sleep. That technically he could, but not without getting a really long lecture from Alfred or something.

The whole family was excited to meet the girl that made the demon blush and smile, even Bruce. So when they found out you were coming over to the manor to work on an English project, there was nothing he could do.

Damian tried to cancel or set it up somewhere else but you weren’t having none of it. After the mess you were raised in, how bad could his family honestly be?

The thought of Damian just being ashamed of introducing his new poor friend to his wealthy famous family crossed your mind but he assured you several times that he was ashamed of his family, not you.

He talked to you about his father, who you were already intimidated by. Her eldest brother, Dick, apparently the only decent sibling he had according to him. The one who followed, Jason, the black sheep of the family with a terrible common sense. Tim, the one he hated the most for some reason. And Alfred, the butler.

A butler… you weren’t even sure you currently had milk.

You had seen the old british man a couple of times when he picked up Damian from school but he never let you get close enough to introduce yourself, so this was gonna be new.

The atmosphere in the limo was more awkward than you expected.

Alfred said a polite “Good morning, miss Y/L/N. I’ve heard a lot about you, it’s nice to finally meet you” that was received with Damian watching him cautiously.

During the ride, you could notice Damian avoided eye contact by looking out the window. His jaw was clenched and brows slightly furrowed.

This change might have gone unnoticed by someone who hadn’t gotten to know Damian’s mannerisms as well as you through all these months.

You reached for one of his hands and covered it with yours, gently squeezing it. “It’s gonna be fine, Dami. Quit worrying that much.”

Once you arrived at the manor, Damian started walking in front of instinctively as if protecting you from something. It didn’t take long to realize what it was.

You had to admit you hadn’t given much thought to what could be expecting you at the Wayne Manor, but this still startled you.

Questions like “Are you friends with him because of the fame and money?”, “Did he hire you?”, “Is he threatening you? Blink twice for yes, once for no”, “Are you some kind of witch?”, “Do you owe him a favor?” were being thrown all around.

Damian tried to get you as away from his brothers as possible, his face was red with rage and embarrassment and he kept yelling at everyone to leave you alone. Finally, he managed to escape and pulled you toward an empty garden.

When he made sure no one was following you, he turned around biting the inside of his lip.

“I’m sorry for that, Y/N.”

Damian wasn’t sure if you were gonna stay quiet, change the topic or leave. But he was greatly surprised when you opened your mouth and let out a whole-heartedly laugh that made his heart swell.

“Well, I can’t say you didn’t warn me.” You joked.

“I promise I’ll make sure they never look in your direction again or else–” He started, getting more furious with every second.

“Damian! It’s fine, really.” You put both your hands over each of his shoulders, causing his muscles to tense, and shot a calming look his way. “I love them, your family is great.”

The Wayne boy softly shrugged your touch off and crossed his arms. “They are nothing but an inconvenience.”

“An inconvenience you love.” You commented, swiftly glancing at him and then looking at the beautiful growing trees that you were sure only Alfred took care of.

-TT- Whatever.”

After some minutes in a comfortable silence, just observing the beautiful plants, flowers and sunny sky. You decided to sit on the grass, against the prettiest tree you could spot.

“Maybe we could do our project here?”

He followed you and sat beside you, nodding as you started to unpack your bag.

“Thank you, by the way.” You murmured, unsure.

Damian examined you with confusion. “What do you mean?”

“For bringing me here, introducing me to your family… For being my friend, I guess.” You smiled shyly at him, shrugging and looking down at your lap, trying not to let him notice your face was probably boiling.

You hated the way Damian could make you feel, but you were also enchanted by it.

“Of course, Y/N. But I should be the one thanking you, you’ve helped me in ways I wish I could share with you.” Damian confessed, thinking back of all those times a text from you was enough to calm him down and seeing your smile would make all his frustrations go away.

You chuckled sweetly. “I don’t see how that’s possible but you are welcome.” And there it was, that warm and innocent grin that could light up his entire world in just one second.

None of you had realized how much time you spent looking into each other’s eyes, none of you was counting. But you could recall catching a glimpse of Damian glancing at your lips as you unconsciously licked the lower one.

It happened fast, but slow at the same time. Your breath halted due to the nervousness of Damian’s face approaching yours, but you could also experience the shock when you felt his lips on yours.

For a first kiss, there was nothing gross or awkward about it. His lips could look rough and chapped most of the time but you were gladly surprised to discover that they were actually really soft and sweet.

The kiss lasted for only a few seconds and soon you were pulling apart. You didn’t know where to look at but it was clearly pointless to try to hide your blushing anymore. Your mouth started to generate some small giggles and you had to stop before you punched yourself in the face.

Well if the kiss wasn’t awkward, the after-kiss would surely be.

Once you dared to look at Damian, you were surprised to learn that he wasn’t staring at you, he was staring at something behind you. You followed his gaze only to see a pair of heads and eyes through the bushes of the garden.

Realizing you had seen what he did, his expression turned more mortified than pissed off and he quickly stood up, taking steps towards his eldest brothers.

Your palm hit your mouth to muffle the loud laughing that was coming out of you as your eyes followed your crush chasing after his brothers who were calling out Alfred’s name.

Boy, you were gonna enjoy being part of this family.

There’s an old saying: “practice makes perfect.” Unfortunately, it’s a lie.

When you are learning a skill, you will make mistakes. This never stops – you will always make mistakes, your whole life. There’s no way around this. Perfection just is not something you can achieve.

But you can and will get better. As you improve your mastery of that skill, you will only notice more mistakes that you didn’t notice before. As a result, the number of mistakes you make (and realize you make) never really goes down. You’ll always screw up something.

And that’s absolutely wonderful.

Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice, good, worthwhile practice, where you are constantly challenging yourself and striving for improvement… makes better. And there is always room to get better – there is no roof. You can always improve, you can always be better than you are now; there is no ceiling to how high you can reach.

As you practice, you get better. As you get better, you notice more areas where you can improve. As you notice more areas to improve, you continue to practice.

If you ever get to the point where you are completely satisfied with something you’ve done, and you see no room for improvement, that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. It just means you haven’t practiced enough to find where else you can get better. Saying “it’s perfect” is just another way of saying “I’ve stopped growing.” You don’t have to settle for that.

Don’t shoot for perfect. Shoot for better. And never, ever EVER stop practicing.
