this song is one of the most beautiful things i've ever listened

Harry's interview on Quotidien
  • I: Can you hear me?
  • H: Yes
  • I: Welcome to Paris!
  • H: Thank you
  • I: How are you? Can you answer in French?
  • H: Good! A little bit. A tiny bit. Très bien et toi ?(very good and you?)
  • I: Very good, thank you. We start our interviews with “can you give us your five favourites words in English or French. Or a French sentence”. Someone told me you knew a French sentence.
  • H: Comment vous faites un café si délicieux? (How do you make such a delicious coffee?)
  • I: OK, that’s good.
  • H: That’s all I have.
  • I: Do you say it very often?
  • H: No... Yes
  • I: What does France mean to you? Is it something, someone etc...?
  • H: Best people I’ve known... I think her, *shows a fan* I guess. Fabien Barthez.
  • I: Yes, Fabien Barthez. Harry, you’re 23 years old and you’re one of the best known pop-star in the world. Everybody has expectations with your new album and single Sign Of The Times. Why did you choose that song? This is not what people were expecting.
  • H: I think I wanted to.. I've always liked music that made me feel something. You know I think writing it I could feet something I wanted to bring it out. I think it's a good indicator for me of what the album is to me. That's why I wanted to go with that first.
  • I: Billboard wrote that the single was "one of the more ambitious opening statements in pop this decade". Not bad, isn't it?
  • H: Thanks!
  • I: Do you have friends working at Billboard?
  • H: I don't know anyone at Billboard.
  • I: When we listen to the song we think of David Bowie, Queen, who else did you think of?
  • H: I mean, I think everyone, anything, any song you've ever listened to growing up or throughout your life or you've enjoyed, inspired you. There are a lot of different things. I wanted to just write and see what came out. I didn't know what I sounded like to make an album. So this process was as interesting for me as I think it will be for people listening to the album for the first time.
  • I: Do you know French singers other than Serge Gainsbourg? That's a tricky question.
  • H: I know Woodkid. He directed my music video.
  • I: Why him?
  • H: I think his videos are amazing, he's a really talented guy and I love French people so I worked with him.
  • I: When you're in Spain, do you say that you love Spanish people?
  • H: No!
  • I: It seems like everything has been easy...
  • H: Great tie.
  • I: You think so? It's French.
  • H: It's not a Spanish tie, isn't it?
  • I: Can I see your loafer? Oh yes! What is the brand? That's not French, isn't it? It's Italian.
  • H: No.
  • I: That's from the European Union!
  • H: Probably yeah.
  • I: It seems like everything has been easy for you, is it true?
  • H: Was what simple?
  • I: Your life, everybody wants a life like yours, with One Direction...
  • H: I mean, I feel very lucky to be able to make music, I feel very lucky to be able to make this, I feel very lucky today being in France and performing my song. I love this song. I can't complain.
  • I: What were the unpleasant things?
  • H: *thinking*
  • I: I don't know, say only one thing.
  • H: I think when you care so much about something, it's hard to get to the point where you feel like it's finished and it feels like you're adding and it never ends and it adds up. So I think the hardest part was getting into that point and be like "ok that's finished."
  • I: You said to the Rolling Stone magazine that most of the album was inspired by a woman. Really?
  • H: No I think, honestly, the album is much more about me than it is about anyone else. I think if I said the album is about a woman it kind of feels like, I don't know, I put a lot of work into this. I don't feel like it revolves around woman. It's a lot about me and things I've never said before. It's more about me.
  • I: How did you start with a boy band and end with a solo career? Is it complicated?
  • H: It's been a lot of fun. You know we were very lucky to get to do some amazing things and at the moment in our lives, we're in a time where everyone is trying their own thing and have a good time. It's been amazing to see everyone doing their own thing as well. If I can do as well as the others, it'd be amazing.
  • I: Do you call them everyday or text them? Do you use What's app?
  • H: I don't have that.
  • I: Why?
  • H: Yes we talk, absolutely. And everyone is bringing stuff out. It's been a lot going on. It's been a good time.
  • I: This is the album cover! Can you describe it? Why did you choose this picture?
  • H: Yeah. So, I don't know. I worked with photographer Harley Weir, I'm a massive fan of her work. And that's amazing and I was lucky enough to work with her. I felt like this was what I wanted.
  • I: Why is it pink? Why the water? Why your back? Why? It's beautiful but why is it pink?
  • H: I don't know, man!
  • I: Really? You don't know?
  • H: I don't know. I don't think I want...
  • I: Apparently pink is Rock'n'roll's colour.
  • H: Apparently so. I don't know. I think it means something to me and if it means anything to anyone else, I wouldn't want to take away from that by explaining it. I think the cool thing about stuff like photos and art is you can just leave it. You don't have to explain it.
  • I: Everybody sees what they want to see.
  • H: Yes exactly.
  • I: Have you seen this?
  • *video of people reacting to Harry's single*
  • I: Your fans record themselves while listening to the song for the first time. You can hear relevant analysis and apparently they all really liked it. Do you read what people say about you on social media? On Youtube, Twitter, Instagram? Do you use Instagram?
  • H: Yes I use it a little bit.
  • *The public disagrees with Harry*
  • H: Yes I use it a little bit. I mean I wish everyone was having as good time as the girl who was like that with her hands. That's what I do when I listen to the song.
  • I: Are you the one using your Instagram? Do you use your own fingers or someone else does it for you?
  • H: Yes, I do mine.
  • I: Do you still vote in Redditch?
  • H: In?
  • I: Redditch!
  • H: That's where I was born?
  • I: Yes.
  • H: I don't live in Redditch.
  • I: So you don't vote there. Where did you vote?
  • H: London, yeah.
  • I: What do you think of the Brexit? Welcome to Europe!
  • H: Thank you very much, thanks. I mean, I don't really comment on politics. To me, anything that brings people together is better than things that pull people apart. That's ... yeah.
  • I: Yet, you are in favour of equality of rights, men, women, gay people, straight people... That's politics.
  • H: I don't know. It doesn't feel like politics. I think stuff like equality feels much more fundamental. I feel like everyone is equal. That doesn't feel like politics to me.
  • I: Your fans are fetishists. They know all of your tattoos, piece of jewellery, they have heart attacks when you cut your hair. Right now you're playing with their feelings. Do you know that?
  • H: Oh ok.
  • I: Yes! What is your favourite tattoo?
  • H: I think... I have a.. probably. I don't know, actually.
  • I: Which one is the latest?
  • H: The latest is this one there. *shows Arlo* And this one. *shows Jackson*
  • I: Jackson? All of them?
  • H: Yes.
  • I: What's the story behind your haircut? How much did you spend on hair products with One Direction?
  • H: Yeah, like a lot. I used a lot, yeah.
  • I: You're in Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan's new movie.
  • H: Yes.
  • I: How did you do?
  • H: I auditioned.
  • I: Look at you there.
  • H: I am, that's me.
  • I: Yes.
  • H: I auditioned and it was great. It's going to be a really cool movie.
  • I: Harry, it feels like we know you since you're a baby. The whole world discovered you in 2010 on X Factor.
  • *video of Harry's X Factor audition*
  • I: You auditioned alone but Simon Cowell had an idea... he put you in a band with Zayn, Louis, Liam and Niall. You became One Direction. You found the name One Direction and you sold millions of albums. One Direction are soon considered as the new Beattles and you filled the biggest stadiums. The whole world was talking about you. When you go out we prayed for your eardrums. You became UK's pride. David Cameron is in one of your music videos, your sang for the Queen. But in 2015... bang! Zayn left the band, fans couldn't get over it. But don't worry, their favourite is now on the cover of the Rolling Stone magazine, he's in Christopher Nolan's new movie, he's Mick Jagger on SNL... What you don't know is that we've met in 2012. You were in France to promote an album and now I have questions. First one! When you're in a car and fans are all around you, do you see that?
  • *video of fans around a car*
  • H: I think I've actually lost my shoe there. When I got in the car... I got in the car and I was like "how many shoes do I have?" Yes I lost my shoe.
  • I: I have another question! Do you still do that before going on stage?
  • *video of Harry and Lou*
  • I: Can we do it?
  • H: No.
  • *does it anyway*
  • I: What is the weirdest question someone asked you?
  • H: I think it was actually a French interview. I got asked if I would pee in a sink... Yeah.
  • I: Ok, that's weird!
  • H: It was the first question, the first question.
  • I: It puts you in the mood.
  • H: Yeah.
  • I: What is the question you never want to be asked ever again? Did I asked you that question?
  • *Harry asks the public*
  • H: Which one? Oh crush.
  • I: What?
  • H: Crush.
  • I: Oh ok. I didn't ask it! Did you know that a French author wrote a novel about you. It's called "Styles", it's about his obsession with you. It's in French. You can translate it.
  • H: Oh! Is that true?
  • I: Yes it's true. He dedicated to you. It's called "Styles" and it's a really good book. Read it!
  • H: Thank you.
  • I: Thank you very much Harry Styles for coming tonight. His first eponymous album comes out on the 12th May. Thank you Harry Styles.
  • H: Thank you.
  • I: Have a safe journey home.
ok but listen... namseok

Have any of you ever considered the beautiful friendship between these two boys? I’m so sad that this amazing ship never gets any recognition when there’s so many beautiful things about Namjoon and Hoseok together. Allow me to tell you why Namseok is worth shipping.

They’re most comfortable around each other

First of all, Namjoon and Hoseok are the same age. When Hoseok was asked the question “who is the easiest to get along with?” Hoseok said:

“Namjoon, because we’re same age friends, and we’ve been living together for so long. When I look at him, I can feel what he wants to say and how he feels.”

When asked about their relationship, Namjoon once said:

“We’re like rice cakes. (Hoseok and I) we always stick together.”

In Bon Voyage, they were told they seem like “awkward friends” because they don’t really interact that much in videos. They both confirmed that on camera, their personalities won’t be the exact same. When the cameras are off, they talk all the time about even the stupidest things, but also the serious things, they confide in each other.

They respect each other immensely

While reviewing the WINGS album, Namjoon talked about the members and their individual songs and he kept telling how well Hoseok did and how hard he worked on his intro with both the dance and music. Later Hoseok walked in to tell Namjoon he was going home (how cute is that?!?!!!) and Namjoon complimented him again. Hoseok was too shy to function.

Or that time they had a heart to heart and told each other why they were envious of each other. Telling each other what the other meant to the group. They admitted their insecurities to one another and it was truly heartwarming to see how well they can talk with each other.

Okay, i need your help, You dragged me into the the beautiful mess that is red velvet, I've been spending the last few hours on a roadtrip blasting Body Talk, im in serious need of how to remember their names, PLS HELP ME HOW?????

How did i drag u into this!! This is pretty much a RV blog so you must have liked them already to find me HEH ;DDD but ok sit tight here we go this will be long and im sorry for replying late

Bae Joohyun aka IRENE | March 29 1991

She’s the leader. Yes she’s beautiful, the jewel of Daegu (where shes from) but that is ! not ! all ! She’s also a really good dancer and when she raps (listen to their song Zoo EDIT: OR OMG THEIR SONG CAMPFIRE HOW DID I FORGET) i die and when she SINGS i also die. She might seem a little ““““cold”””” but she’s just kind of shy (she’s opened up a lot more since debut) DONT BE FOOLED shes literally WILD when shes w/ the members. She ALWAYS wins when RV plays games and  she loves Wendy’s butt too! Fans refer to her using the bunny emoji (judy hopps)/watermelon emoji (her fruit in Red Summer era). She’s the oldest yet most flexible and likes to wear acupuncture slippers. Her hobbies include ironing and staying at home.

Kang Seulgi aka SEULGI | February 10 1994

This is the person in charge of CHARISMA in the group LOL She is the 2nd oldest and trained the longest out of all of them (a whopping 7 years!). Despite going through a slump (which she’s admitted multiple times) prior to debut she still managed to pull ! through ! and she is always so enthusiastic and precious! She sometimes has a delayed reaction to things skmfksd Many ppl consider her the best dancer in RV and her vocals are nothing to deny either!! I believe she’s supposed to be the best in Japanese out of the members?? She loves Pringles and her fav flavor is the original one (Pringles UK knows her). She’s apparently the least flexible member and fails at splits. Fans refer to her using a bear emoji (because shes soft like a bear) and the pineapple emoji! She also likes to draw!

Son Seungwan aka Wendy | February 21 1994 (shes my baby im going to write a lot)

She moved to US some time in 5th grade and attended middle school in Minnesota and then moved to Toronto Canada for high school! She was in her school’s choir and she did covers (legendary Halo cover) it’s really cute :(( She’s literally SONSHINE and is rlly nice to everyone and the members said their first impression of her was this incredibly kind person (at 33:55). She’s also really embarassing and awkward but it’s okay (watch their 4th ever v live). She also sings really well and has this amazing voice . Netizens attack her a lot for being the ‘’’ugly’’ member and call her fat etc which probably made her lose a lot of weight to look like how she is now which I don’t really like talking about because it makes me so sad… Her hobbies include baking and cooking food for other ppl (her seniors/staff/etc) and finding underrated songs! Fans refer to her using the hamster emoji/orange! Because I love her so much I’ve made like text posts w/ random info about her LOL so check it out if you’re feeling bored ( PART 1 / PART 2)

Park Sooyoung aka Joy | September 3 1996

She used to be the youngest before Yeri joined! She is “cutie sexy joy” pretty much the sexy member in RV and she loves introducing herself with a hair flip it’s amazing. She went on WGM and she’s imo the best member at variety ;) she is part of vocal line and has this really clear voice that makes you go </3 when you hear it!! She is also the tallest member and basically towers over everyone else lmfao Recently she turned into actress! Joy starred in a TVN drama called “The Liar and his Lover”. She is a troll and i love it (one time she told a fan to eat fart on UFO sadjkksk it was a joke obviously). She likes watching videos about training dogs and her dream is to become a dog trainer despite never having a dog beforejfdsksd Fans refer to her using a chicken emoji/ kiwi emoji!

Kim Yerim aka YERI | March 5 1999

She actually joined about 6-7 months after the others during the group’s cb with Ice Cream Cake. She got a lot of undeserved hate for it and OT4 stans can leave. She’s really improved her singing when RV made a cb with Rookie which Wendy has acknowledged and is rlly proud of her for (i can’t remember what time but its in this v live). She is also a good dancer! She got put with Seulrene for the dance intro during SMA 2016 . The fandom calls her a scammer lmao and she is literally the sassiest little shit but we love her for it. She’s also probably secretly the heir to SM if not the CEO already because she’s always really bold with her statements about SM LOL She also cackles and i love it; her dream is to become a vampire and she’s RV’s social butterfly and she likes making weird food combinations… Fans refer to her using the turtle emoji and the grape emoji!

Not that long ago Jenny Han surprised us with the news that her TATBILB duology would become a trilogy, as she wasn’t finished telling Lara Jean’s story. Yesterday, this beautiful cover of Always and Forever, Lara Jean was revealed by EW. The book will be in stores on April 4th, 2017!

Lara Jean is having the best senior year a girl could ever hope for. She is head over heels in love with her boyfriend, Peter; her dad’s finally getting remarried to their next door neighbor, Ms. Rothschild; and Margot’s coming home for the summer just in time for the wedding.

But change is looming on the horizon. And while Lara Jean is having fun and keeping busy helping plan her father’s wedding, she can’t ignore the big life decisions she has to make. Most pressingly, where she wants to go to college and what that means for her relationship with Peter. She watched her sister Margot go through these growing pains. Now Lara Jean’s the one who’ll be graduating high school and leaving for college and leaving her family—and possibly the boy she loves—behind.

ALL RIGHT, so jaywalkers (u know, that one haikyuu!! college AU) completes one year today! to celebrate, in addition to getting smashed this weekend, i’m setting up an FAQ post for all your queries about the universe, concerns about tsukishima kei’s wellbeing, and questions for bokuto koutarou.

i’d like to thank every single one of my readers for all the amazing responses and love this story has gotten! i’m very, very happy. i write jaywalkers to make people happy and when i see it working, i’m over the moon.

to begin with, i introduce the two people without whom not only this ‘verse, but i, as a person, would be sitting in one of those big recycling dumpster things with a bottle of absolut and three hundred packets of doritos:

teddy/ @soodyo who i went down on one knee and asked to govern the kingdom of this verse with me. that is to say, my co-artist and everything that is good and pure in my life. (she stopped me from breaking suga’s ribs during a performance. believe me when i say she is the one that keeps jaywalkers safe.)

ksenya/ @fyolette who i went down on the other knee and asked to be the iron hand beneath the velvet glove re: my writing endeavours. that is to say, she told me that the apocalyptic photoshoot scene made her laugh in the middle of a swedish airport and i fell in love and said PLEASE BE MY BETA. she is asking me to let you know that she loses her marbles at the mention of jaywalkers!akaashi.

NOW, ONTO THE QUESTIONS. under the cut that is under these goddamn amazing character profiles, again by teddy.

  • Question: What's your favorite song?
  • O'shea: The Perfect Beat by Afrika Bambatta
  • Q: What's the scariest movie you've ever seen?
  • O'shea: I don't get scared by movies, really. But I'm easily disturbed. When I first saw 'Hills Have Eyes', I couldn't get some images out of my head. Still actually
  • Q: What's your favorite movie starring your dad?
  • O'shea: All about the benjamins. Super Suuuuper underrated
  • Q: What's your favorite Ice Cube song?
  • O'shea: Natural Born Killaz
  • Q: Whe do you think you'll finish screenwriting at USC?
  • O'shea: When I feel like my writing is missing something. I'll know it's time to sharpen back up and get to my cinematic roots.
  • Q: When can we expect music from you?
  • O'shea: Ingratiate I would love to do music. I still snap over instruments to myself. But they might typecast ya mans if I put certain type record. For now I'm focused on my craft as an actor but my older brother and I have started a producing team.
  • Q: Why haven't you used your snap?
  • O'shea: Everytime I'm on any social media I'm just thinking. "Why am I not on instagram?"
  • Q: What is your favorite part in SOC?
  • O'shea: Smashing Bryan Turners office. We've all wanted to break things with a bat before.
  • Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
  • O'shea: Crush my enemies. Not really. But I'm a real Nerd and I am completely unapologetic. When I gotta unwind it's video game time.
  • Q: Why didn’t you release the video for ‘Ain’t No Place’? Was it because of being typecast?
  • O'shea: Yes. With the movie having buzz around the Academy I didn't want any possibility of the song affecting the film. And I didn't want it to look like I'm Ice Cube part 2 out here. lol.
  • Q: Were you nervous about trying out for the movie?
  • O'shea: I was extremely nervous. I had to audition for two years and when you've never been through the process. You don't know what could've made you or boke you during that little time you had auditioning. If I didn't take the role. The world woulda killed me. If I didn't win the role. The world woulda killed me. And I was it was as movie. The world woulda killed me. At the end of the day, nothing was gonna sop me from immortalizing my dad in film. A lot of people ain't want me to get the part. Be he did and that's all I needed.
  • Q: Celeb crush?
  • O'shea: She's taken already. Don't wanna start waves.
  • Q: Did you practice some of the songs with your father or did you learn on your own?
  • O'shea: The performance and studio scenes in SOC are me in my element. What I'm used to doing. So when I was there it's like, wait y'all want me to rap my DAD's songs? I BEEN DOIN THIS.
  • Q: Were any of the scenes hard to do?
  • O'shea: More cowbell #SNLjoke
  • Q: Actors you look up to?
  • O'shea: Denzel and Leo
  • Q: Did you re-record some of Cube's verses or lip sync?
  • O'shea: We recorded the whole album, fam
  • Q: Marvel or DC?
  • O'shea: If you gotta ask. Somethin must be wrong.
  • Q: Do you like your fathers older movies?
  • O'shea: of course. People don't appreciate what a great film Players Club is.
  • Q: Do you ever feel pressure to surpass all that your father has accomplished?
  • O'shea: I've felt it since I was in the 5th grade. (The pressure) it doesn't come from him. All of it comes from me because I don't want to feed into the narrative of talent skips a generation or the whole "was born on 3rd base, and thought he hit a triple." Aspect. I'm so appreciative of my blessings and the only way to ensure my own legacy is to perfect my craft.
  • Q: Worst movie you've ever seen?
  • O'shea: Movie 43
  • Q: Best compliment you've ever heard?
  • O'shea: When I hear that I inspire someone. Being a celebrity is cute and all but it's smoke and mirrors. I understand that this all can be taken away in an instant. FAME is a jellyfish. Yeah it's beautiful but don't you dare get wrapped up in it. So while I do have a platform, the best thing i can do is to encourage or inspire. If not i'm just being selfish.
  • Q: Are you going to see Kobe play his very last game?
  • O'shea: Yeah I'll be the guy crying uncontrollably being escorted by security
  • Q: Would you take a role in a Tyler Perry movie?
  • O'shea: Is it about a single parent overcoming obstacles while still maintaining their strong christian values?
  • Q: What artist would we be surprised you listen to?
  • O'shea: I love Imagine Dragons and F.U.N.
  • Q: How was it growing up as ice cubes son?
  • O'shea: It has it's perks of course. But kind of annoying until you grow up lol. I have to put people through so many trials in order for you to be considered my friend. You don't know people's motives. My friend Tanner was my very first friend EVER. Met in kindergarten. Just said 'hey I'm Shea lets be friends.' After that.....Everyone else know me as ice cubes son. But my friends. Call me Shea. And it's 5 of them. You just grow up thinking different being ice cubes son.
  • Q: Would you want your kids to follow in your footsteps?
  • O'shea: If it was their choice by all means. My parents allowed us to find our own paths. But give everything your best effort because if you don't, then why are you doing it?
  • Q: What advice would you give your younger self?
  • O'shea: learn how to dunk
  • Q: Fave Rappers?
  • O'shea: Dwayne Michael Carter and Sean Anderson
  • Q: Which Ice Cube verse is your fave?
  • O'shea: "G-d damn I'm glad y'all set it off....."
  • Q: What's your fave app?
  • O'shea: ESPN Radio
  • Q: Will you answer me on day? :(

One of my favorite things about the whole SKAM experience is the incredible music I've discovered thanks to this show. Like, I haven't stopped listening to Highasakite's "Lover, where do you live?" since I watched season 1 and it's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. And I'm not even gonna go into Gabrielle and "O Helga Natt"...

gallavich prompt: can you do something where one of them has an accident and forgets who the other is? :)

// ok I’ve given this my best shot…it’s a total standalone, full on oneshot, completely unrelated to my gallavich queer club universe (but trust me there is lots more of that coming!) enjoy //

‘Im sorry Mr Gallagher but he has amnesia.’

Ian sighed. 'But he’s going to remember? It’ll come back?’

'We can’t know anything for certain. I don’t want to promise something that may not happen. You’re free to visit him now, though. He’s awake.’

So Ian walked slowly down the corridor, breathing in the harsh chemical smell of the hospital. He just wanted to get to the room and see Mickey, yet he walked slower than ever. He knew that every step he took was a step closer to discovering something terrible.

'Can I come in?’, he called, knocking on the door. The man in the bed frowned at him, confused.

'I think you have the wrong room, man,’ he said, shrugging blankly.

Ian’s heart almost stopped. 'Mickey. It’s me. It’s Ian’, he whispered, shocked.

Mickey’s eyes widened. 'How the fuck do you know my name?’, he said, his tone suspicious and body inching away from Ian in caution, who had now entered the room.

Ian couldn’t believe what he was hearing. 'I know your name, Mickey Milkovich, because I have loved you for just shy of eight years.’

'I’m not a fucking fag,’ Mickey spat aggressively, but his eyes were fearful.

'You’ve got to be kidding me,’ Ian muttered incredulously. Mickey had reverted back to how he was before coming out. Before even knowing Ian. He walked up close to Mickey and got up close, the words falling slowly but piercingly out of his mouth. 'I don’t know what year you think you’re in, but back in 2014, you came out. You practically screamed it. Your dad beat the shit out of us, but we won. We went home and showered together and we didn’t fuck that night. We kissed with our broken faces and just lay side by side all night. Toe to toe, head to head. I held you. I kissed away your tears. And then, Mickey, then you rested your ear over my chest and you fell asleep listening to my heartbeat.’ Mickey was staring at him, paralysed. Ian wondered if he’d gone too far, but he didn’t stop. 'I know your name, Mickey Milkovich, because I can’t count the number of times I’ve fucking screamed out your name each time you coaxed my body into an orgasm…which you reciprocated nicely, might I add. Usually I top. But liking what you like don’t make you a bitch, isn’t that right?’

'I don’t know who the fuck you think you are but you need to shut your fucking mouth,’ Mickey practically whimpered. Then Ian calmed down a little. He realised that this wasn’t Mickey’s fault. So he spoke softly and less aggressively.

'I know your name, Mickey Milkovich, because six months ago, we got married. In the park here in Chicago. Our sisters were bridesmaids. Your brothers didn’t show up. But mine became yours. Lip was my best man. Kev was yours. And Yev was ring bearer. Your son - our son.’ Mickey was speechless. 'He’s almost five. And these are the rings he carried down the aisle to us,’ Ian said, holding up his hand to show the thick, plain silver band snug on his fourth finger. Then he tentatively reached out to run his thumb over Mickey’s identical ring. Mickey instinctively snatched his hand away like Ian’s touch burned him. 'In your vows, you told me that you loved me beyond any and all things. And you told me again later, when it was just us, because I still couldn’t believe it. It felt like a dream. Because I love you too, Mickey. So, so much,’ Ian told him, tears in his eyes, desperate. He clasped Mickey’s hand now and held on, his husband’s hand, the hand he knew better than his own, as he cried silently.

Mickey stared at their hands, fingering the ring on his finger, frowning. 'I don’t know where to even begin…they told me I had some amnesia but…how could I forget so much? There’s just, years and years missing. Years with you, apparently. You don’t seem like the sort of guy I could forget’, he whispered.

Ian raised his eyebrows. 'Was that - are you flirting?’ he almost laughed.

Mickey looked away awkwardly. 'Look, I know I’m gay. I’ve always known. I never kiss guys. Don’t want them to get attached…well. I don’t want to get attached to them, honestly.’

'You kiss me plenty. All of that playing-it-straight crap went to shit after a couple years with me.’

'Am I really married? To you?’ Ian reached for his wallet.

'I’ll bring more pictures from home, tomorrow - but I always have this one with me. This is us. Last May.’ Ian showed him the little rectangular picture.

'We look good,’ Mickey remarked, but the two men in tuxes with matching grins looked like strangers to him. There was a pause. 'Do I really have a kid?’

'Yes. He’s here,’ Ian said, flipping the pockets of the wallet over and revealing a photo from a year or so ago, of Yev sat on the couch at Ian and Mickey’s place. 'Yevgeny. We all call him Yev.’

'What kind of a -’

'Why?’ Ian considered how to answer. 'Who’s his mother?’

Ian sighed. 'It’s a long story. I’ll tell you another day.’ Mickey didn’t persist.

'How did we meet?’

Ian smiled. 'It was 2011. We were still living out our teenage years, though yours were nearly over. You thought I’d - hurt your sister and you just burst into the shop where I used to work, screaming out my name. Wouldn’t be the last time you did that…anyway. We didn’t really meet until I came to your place one morning. We started out fighting, pretty hard, but then you pinned me down and - I just remember our eyes locked and we just stared at each other, and we just knew. And then we were just doing it. Fucking in your twin bed. I was fifteen. Shit.’ He sighed. 'We kept hooking up in secret. Always rushing through the sex. Terrified of getting discovered. That was more you than me, but still. We didn’t even kiss for, like, two years. Not that I didn’t try. But we used to flirt shamelessly. That was more me than you. You were nothing like anyone I’d ever known. I didn’t think you could exist. But you did. Eventually you seemed to just accept that you wanted me and you weren’t going to deny yourself pleasure anymore. It was literally destroying you, Mick.’

Ian had gone to get them both coffee. On the walk back, he reflected. It was still unbelievable. And unfair. But when hadn’t things been with them? He didn’t know how he could tell Mickey everything. Svetlana. Terry. His bipolar. The accident. How could everything about them have been wiped clean out of his head?

As he returned, he was broken out of these thoughts by Mickey’s voice ringing down the corridor. He was…singing? Ian listened.

'And I don’t want the world to see me, cos I don’t think that they’d understand’, Mickey sang, scratchy but pure.

Ian stood in the doorway, frozen. Mickey noticed. 'Are you ok?’, he asked.

'Mick…why were you singing that song?’, he asked in a choked whisper.

Mickey shrugged. 'I don’t actually know. I seem to remember it from somewhere. And it’s - it’s nice. I guess,’ he said, puzzled. 'Why?’

Ian stepped inside the room slowly. 'That was the song we danced to at our wedding. It’s our song, it’s our fucking song’, he said, then sang the next line, voice shaking, 'when everything’s made to be broken, I just want you to know who I am.’

They didn’t say anything. They just stared at each other, both searching for things that the other didn’t know how to give.

Mickey slowly slipped off the ring and held it. 'So I can remember our wedding song but not the wedding’, he murmured bitterly.

Ian noticed Mickey’s eyes fill with tears. He knew him well enough to know that any second he would begin crying. He walked over and held Mickey, not caring if the gesture was too sudden - if his husband was crying, he was going to comfort him. Sure enough, Mickey gave a loud sob, then tears fell down his face as he began to cry. Ian absentmindedly stroked his neck, planted little kisses in his hair; it was second nature. 'Sorry,’ he said after a moment, worrying Mickey would react adversely to the affection.

Mickey shook his head. 'It’s fine. It’s - nice. That’s not it.’

'Then what?’

'It’s just…I want to remember it, all of it. Not only for my sake but for yours too, this isn’t fair to either of us’, Mickey sobbed.

Ian nodded. 'I know. I know’, he said, feeling tears sting his own eyes. After everything they’d been out through, this just felt like the sickest, most fucked up twist of fate.

Mickey slowly turned and looked at Ian. He had somehow ended up curled against Ian’s chest, a familiar position. They were so close; Ian could feel his breath on his neck and it took all the strength he had not to kiss Mickey. It was too soon, it was too soon, he kept telling himself.

But then Mickey reached up, slowly, tracing the outline of Ian’s face. Tentative at first, then coming to cradle Ian’s face in his palm. Mickey’s eyes fell to his lips.

'Oh fuck,’ Ian murmured, and gave in. He kissed him hard, and then Mickey returned the kiss, deepened it. Ian’s hands ran through Mickey’s hair and they really tasted each other. Ian couldn’t get enough of him, no matter how familiar he was. That was the beauty of it.

'Your kiss. I’ve had it before’, Mickey said breathlessly.

Ian smiled. 'My lips are clearly a pretty unforgettable experience’, he smiled through his tears. Mickey laughed.

Mickey had fallen asleep in his arms and Ian had stayed, holding him. It reminded him of old times, before the accident. They lay together on the bed, Ian breathing in the same old smell. The blood and the hospital couldn’t erase it; it was, unmistakably, home.

'Ian? Are you awake?’, he whispered.

Ian looked down at his husband. 'Yeah. I’m here.’

'I just want to say. I’m - I’m sorry. You don’t deserve this. I can’t imagine how hard it must be’, he said.

'It’s not your fault’, Ian began, but Mickey cut across -

'regardless. I’m sorry. And when the doctor sees me tomorrow, I’m going to find out how I can beat this thing - if I can. If I can’t, well…’, he trailed off, unsure what would happen.

'Then we’ll work through it. I vowed to take you in sickness and in health’, Ian reminded him. 'God knows you’ve done that for me. Look, I love you, Mickey. I will always love you. And I know you’ve forgotten how to love me, but I’ll remind you. I want you to remember, to feel it all again’, he whispered, kissing his neck.

Mickey smiled. 'Thank you, firecrotch,’ he muttered as his eyes closed, drifting back into sleep.

Ian’s heart jolted and he closed his eyes, grinning, as more tears came. 'You’re on your way back, aren’t you,’ he whispered, kissing Mickey’s forehead gently. He didn’t think his old nickname had ever made him cry before.

But that was their relationship. Expect the unexpected. Always.

Hello Adrien! I'm not looking for drama, just wondering. Why are you mad about YOI winning the CrunchyrRoll Anime Awards? I've seen you express more love for it than for MP100, and I'd just like your opinion on it since you're also an animator.

o boi, this might be long. (AFTER WRITING EDIT: god, yes it is.)

let me preface this by reiterating that i indeed love yuri on ice and would die for it. as a queer guy and as an anime fan in general, it was a much needed breath of fresh air in the industry.

now that the pleasantries are out of the way, lets get to the REAL shit/drama, award by award (that YOI won) from ok to unacceptable.

now, i havent watched any of the shows nominated for that scene but yoi, so i can only say ive heard the scene from erased was more fitting. to me, yoi winning here seems pretty good and deserving, since the kissing scene was not only heartwarming to watch but also pretty fucking legendary. im ok with that.

like- listen, im sorry but,,, yuri isnt that much of a strong character. yeah, he has anxiety and sometimes hes bitchy, but seriously, replace viktor by a random girl and yuri isnt all that interesting anymore. yuri becomes interesting only because of viktor. if anyone should have been the best boy of yoi, it shouldve been him, or yurio or literally anyone with more charisma. yes, even JJ. especially JJ.

on the other side, you have reigen arataka, who not only is a hilarious person but also the best goddamn mentor anime has ever seen. he acts in a crazy way, scams people for a living, but never actually hurts anyone and even improves the world he lives in by actually helping people even if theyre not receiving the aid they expected. reigen is the reason mob has grown to be such a great kid/character. hes a smart, responsible and caring adult who wants the kid he takes care of to be ok. best boy reigen.

o boi. i have one thing to say: who the hell remembered the ending theme of yoi? i sure as hell didnt. it was ok, but nothing really amazing or memorable about it. my dude. wtf.

meanwhile, mp100s ed, while not the absolute fucking best ever, was pretty goddamn good. it uses paint on glass, an obscure animation technique i utterly adore and its amazingly well animated, and just overall beautiful. the song is nice as well.

listen. i get it, we all know the words to the song by heart, and ive sang it way, way too many times to myself. its also colourful, but lets be honest for a sec here. the op was ok, to pretty nice. thats it. the only reason were freaking out about it is because the lyrics have become emotional when you relate them to the ending of the story, but show this op to anyone who doesnt know yuri on ice and theyll go “oh, nice.”, thats it.

mob psychos op is fucking insane, in the best possible way. it breaks the usual anime op conventions and looks absolutely fantastic. there is so much going on all the time on screen, so many easter eggs, so much beauty in the animation and in the colours. you can see the people who made it really liked the original material and wanted to honour it the best they could. and boy, did they honour it. the song is also pretty fucking great and it always makes me super hyped up, for literally anything. the only anime opening i saw this year that could compare to this one is kiznaivers, which is also kinda psychedelic and incredible-looking, and guesss what, it wasnt even fucking nominated!!! smh.

oh man. oh boi. o boi o man. this is where i get REALLY MAD.

listen. im an animator, i animate things, and even though im still learning i can tell bad from good, and bullshit from truth.

well, heres the truth. yuri on ices animation is average. sometimes its really good, but most of the time its average and sometimes downright shitty.

now, i know what youre gonna say: “oh but pgp they hired a professional choreographist to make these, they poured their souls in this and anyway they didnt have a high budget”.

well, first of all, yuri on ice aint the first sports anime to hire professionals to do the choreography of their shit. basically every popular sports anime do it, it aint special. second of all: you wanna know what other anime had low budget and fucking hellishly good animation? fucking kill la kill.

now, what did kill la kill do to make up for their budget? did they draw shit? of course no, ya idiot. they lowered their production costs by reducing the framerate on some scenes so they could work more on other scenes. so, some actions are less fluid, but the drawings still look good.

on yuri on ice, as i said, some drawings look fucking awful. where to look? the worst is probably with leo’s routines which are crippled with animation errors and shit drawings. next would probably be that korean dude and then, none other than yuri. yes, you heard me. yuri. some parts of eros are like, badly animated. sorry people. his free skating is way better animated, but its still not something i can call “very good animation”.

funnily enough, all 5 of the other final 6 have much better animation than yuri, and sometimes that animation becomes outstanding, like with yurio or chris’ routines, which are really well done.

TL;DR: yuri on ices animation overall isnt anywhere near the level required to be considered “great animation”.

and then, we come to mob psycho 100. oh boy. that show is an animation goldmine. there is never a frame standing out as ugly. if something is not looking “good”, its always on purpose. the different styles and techniques used are incredible and the fluidity and expressionness of the animation is absolutely insane. take a look at the fight scene that got mp100 an award: its so incredibly fluid and fast-paced, youd think it was animated on 1′s (meaning out of the 24 drawings shown in one second, every one of them was differently drawn), just like the sai/genos fight in opm? WRONG.

its almost entirely animated on 3′s (8 drawings out of 24 frames are differently drawn), which is the norm for anime during regular scenes, but a pretty amazing feat for an action scene. and all of the drawings look great.
so again, a low framerate, which is cheaper to produce, is in no way an excuse to animate badly.

mob psycho 100s animation is outstanding in so many ways and at no point while watching the show did i feel something looked badly animated.

yuri on ice is a great show but its extremely overhyped and its animation is not good enough to even be nominated for an award on it. mob psycho is the anime that is the closest to flawless ive had the chance to watch in a very long time. i know this award was just a popularity thing so the hypes got a lot to do with the results, but that wont prevent me from being salty. have a good day.

I think I can say Sleeping At Last has some of the most beautiful songs I can think of.

Each single song is so special. I always feel how huge the universe is and I tend to think about my place within it.

Please love yourself, listen to them, let me propose you those of Space I&II (with bonus Light bc it’s important):

’Сause you are loved. You are loved more than you know.
I hereby pledge all of my days to prove it so.
Though your heart is far too young to realize
The unimaginable light you hold inside,

I guess space, and time, takes violent things, angry things
and makes them kind.
We are the dust of dust., We are the apple of God’s eye.
We are infinite as the universe we hold inside.
Infinity times infinity.
Let there be light, let there be light, let me be right…

God knows, I am dissonance Waiting to be swiftly pulled into tune
I know the further I go, The harder I try, only keeps my eyes closed
And somehow I’ve fallen in love
With this middle ground at the cost of my soul
Yet I know, if I stepped aside,
Released the controls, you would open my eyes
That somehow, all of this mess
Is just my attempt to know the worth of my life…

Like a telescope, I will pull you so close 'til no space lies in between.
And suddenly I see you. Suddenly I see you.
I was a billion little pieces 'til you pulled me into focus.
Astronomy in reverse, It was me who was discovered.

Fault lines tremble underneath my glass house.
But I put it out of my mind long enough to call it courage
To live without a lifeline.
I bend the definition of faith to exonerate my blind eye.
‘Til the sirens sound, I’m safe.

Our nights have grown so long. Now we beg for sound advice.
“let the brokenness be felt 'til you reach the other side.
There is goodness in the heart of every broken man
Who comes right up to the edge of losing everything he has.”
We were young enough to sign along the dotted line.
Now we’re young enough to try to build a better life.

While collecting the stars, I connected the dots.
I don’t know who I am, but now I know who I’m not.
I’m just a curious speck that got caught up in orbit.
Like a magnet it beckoned my metals toward it.
Make my messes matter. Make this chaos count.
Let every little fracture in me shatter out loud.

You taught me the courage of stars before you left.
How light carries on endlessly, even after death.
With shortness of breath, you explained the infinite.
How rare and beautiful it is to even exist.
I couldn’t help but ask for you to say it all again.
I tried to write it down but I could never find a pen.
I’d give anything to hear you say it one more time,
That the universe was made Just to be seen by my eyes.
With shortness of breath, I’ll explain the infinite
How rare and beautiful it truly is that we exist.

Stitch by stitch I tear apart.
If brokenness is a form of art, I must be a poster child prodigy.
Thread by thread I come apart.
If brokenness is a work of art, Surely this must be my masterpiece.
I’m only honest when it rains. If I time it right, the thunder breaks
When I open my mouth. I want to tell you but I don’t know how.

I’ve been worried all my life, A nervous wreck most of the time.
I’ve always been afraid of heights, of falling backwards.
I’ve been worried all my life.
’Til one day I had enough of this exercise of trust.
I leaned in and let it hurt, Let my body feel the dirt.
When I break pattern, I break ground.
I rebuild when I break down.
I wake up more awake than I’ve ever been before.

Still I’m pinned under the weight of what I believed would keep me safe.
So show me where my armor ends, show me where my skin begins.
Like a final puzzle piece, It all makes perfect sense to me…
The heaviness that I hold in my heart belongs to gravity.
The heaviness in my heart belongs to gravity.

Hi! Forgive if this is a "duh" question or something, but I'm at a bit of a loss, and though I just found your blog a few days ago thanks to a friend sharing a certain tag and me digging through it for related things, you seem to know your stuff. I've been feeling drawn to particularly the Norse pantheon lately, but I'm a commitmentphobe when it comes things like worshiping and what not. I was wondering if you had any advice for putting "feelers" out to see if I'm cut out for this.

Hello friend, and welcome. I hope you find useful things here.

Having sat with your question for a bit, I find myself considering what ‘feelers’ actually are, and, more to the point, whether any of us are cut out for this.

Because ‘this’ is so much more than someone else’s outmoded ideas of bowing and praying and leaving the occasional offering on an altar. It’s so much more than echoes of dusty pulpits and priest’s robes.

If you wish to tend to altars, and to pray, you can. One can, in a sense, do whatever one wishes. No harm no foul. One can smile and call it whatever one wants. That’s the beauty and the terror of it, of the vertiginous abyss of nigh infinite possibility we find ourselves in. One can craft whatever what one wishes, and the terrible gaze of some Cosmic Overseer will no longer fall upon one’s shoulders, if indeed it ever would have.

The question, as ever comes, carried on dark and ominous wings: Will it stand up in the face of Nature? In the raw tumult of Being? In times of suffering and danger, loss and terror, in bone-shaking ecstasy and skin-flaying joy? In voiceless, strangled silences, in heated darknesses, in the desert of awful absence, the grip of terrible doubt? Doubt in the essence of oneself, in others, in the face of friends or foes?

In extremis, will it hold together, or will it disintegrate, leaving you naked, unprotected and afraid? Will the raw, untrammelled selection pressures of the mundane leach things of colour, or will mockery grow fat upon your efforts, like a leech?

Will you even care, in the end?

In the spaces occupied by the so-called Norse Pantheon, the ultimate end of us all, of our worlds, our dreams, is a thing which forms the very bedrock of sacred mythic time.

Gods die. Gods die. Gods. Bloody. Die.

And this isn’t some deathcult, some wannabe viking LARP, some WASP-Jesus-dressed-up-in-a-horned-helmet.

The death of gods is woven in tight. Whether Ragnarok be a Christian addition or not, the fact is that every spiral reaches a point where it can no longer to be on the same level, the same plane and place as it began. The End is the Beginning But Different:

catastrophe (n.) 1530s, “reversal of what is expected” (especially a fatal turning point in a drama), from Latin catastropha, from Greek katastrophe “an overturning; a sudden end,” from katastrephein “to overturn, turn down, trample on; to come to an end,” from kata “down” (see cata-) + strephein “turn” (see strophe). Extension to “sudden disaster” is first recorded 1748.

‘This’ acknowledges that. ‘This’ says that the End Is In All Things, and it is that  which brings forth poetry and song, which tasks us to live most fully, and most excellently, each in our own way.

It is said, many times over by others “Eat, drink, and be merry - for tomorrow we die!”

With apologies to one Shaker-of-Spear(s) from a devotee of another:

Fuck that.

Eat, drink, and be merry, for today we Live!

Today we Live in spite of all the bullshit politics and ten thousand forms of artificial death and destruction crammed into our skulls to move bits about which enrich the bank accounts of oligarchs and demagogues.

Today we Live in spite of all the lies we were told about the future, in spite of all the bombs being dropped and the people being murdered by those who were supposed to protect us, in spite of the wars fought and the innocents slaughtered, though we’ve cried out Not in our Name!

Today we Live in spite of the knowing of our Dying, in every heartbeat, every dividing cell, every drop of sweat, every movement of belly and breast, every blink of an eye, every tensing and movement of tendon and muscle. Every smile, every laugh, every sob every ache, every wave of pleasure, every streak of pain.

And we are not alone, for the trees thrum with Life, the Earth crackles with it, soiled filled with writhing business, each continental plate pressed against each other, every tremor every hot surge of magma. The light of distant stars pulses towards us, radiation caught and light pressing against our eyes as the heart of the sun boils and roars with Kosmic voice.

And the wheel turns, whirling with holy flame, seen for thousands of years across the globe, etched, painted on rock, pressed into metal, venerated in and on temples.

The spiral quickens and slows as it will.

Gods thought long dead now come again. Holy Powers, seemingly unworshipped for centuries - for tens of centuries - now reaching out to inspire mortals, to draw them once again into an ancient dance, just as a breeze may stir the leaves of an old, old tree into voice again.

These feelers, friend anon? How does one feel? How does one’s skin sense? Have you felt the Life in you, friend? Have you listened to yourself, so very, truly quick, in all senses?

Felt your bones in your flesh, your blood in your bones; the heat and light within which mirrors the sun, which you may feel as you throw your head back in surprise and joy, Or as you fall prostrate in ecstasy and miraculous wonder at the vastness of it All?

The world takes us out of ourselves, removes our thought, our expectation, our false, bloodless Images - replacing them with vibrant unexpectedness. We may not cling to them, let them go, to have them replaced with vibrant resonant Images which stir the Soul and bring us deeper into the Numinous. Or we may cling onto our constructs, our preconceptions, like a life-raft in a storm, each is a choice, but a storm proceeds as it will - with little mercy save when a certain, singular, eye is upon you.

These are our choices, but we cannot expect the kosmos to care one way or another - as the ancients said: Wyrd goes as it must.

All we can do is adjust the tiller, keep an eye on the horizon, and listen to the songs and stories the stars tell us as we sail the seas of Soul.

All poetry, all song,  all words and Images, are brought forth, from where we meet the kosmos.

The so-called Norse Pantheon are at your fingertips. Just don’t be surprised if they touch you, too!

  • Me: *Turns on song*
  • Me: Listen to that guitar in the beginning.
  • Me: Do you HEAR THAT PART?!?!?! So good.
  • Me: This is the best line. *Shouts lyrics as loud as humanly possible*
  • Me: Listen to that bass line. That is art. That's one of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard.
  • Me: Isn't the singer amazing?
  • *Song ends*
  • Me: Did you like that song?
  • Person: You talked through the whole thing.

Songs you relate with Swan Queen? With a little explanation or favorite part of the lyrics P.S You are great!

Songs that I relate to SQ as a couple? Because there are so many songs, too, that I relate to either Regina or Emma on their own as well. Ugh, this is so hard. I hope you’re ready for a long-ass list.

Here is part of my official SQ playlist (though it is ALWAYS growing).

Hey. So, possibly stupid question, but I've gone through the series, and scoured A Wiki of Ice and Fire, and I'm still a tad confused on what the others actually are. From what you can gather, are they an old race of magical PEOPLE, or are they more along the lines of demons, or djinn who have been waiting for winter to roll around? The same goes for the Children of the Forest... Magical race of PEOPLE or something more?

The Children of the Forest are people, yes, but they’re not human people. Like the giants, they are a non-human but humanoid race. You can see this in the description of Leaf in ADWD:

That was not Arya’s voice, nor any child’s. It was a woman’s voice, high and sweet, with a strange music in it like none that he had ever heard and a sadness that he thought might break his heart. Bran squinted, to see her better. It was a girl, but smaller than Arya, her skin dappled like a doe’s beneath a cloak of leaves. Her eyes were queer—large and liquid, gold and green, slitted like a cat’s eyes. No one has eyes like that. Her hair was a tangle of brown and red and gold, autumn colors, with vines and twigs and withered flowers woven through it.
“Who are you?” Meera Reed was asking.
Bran knew. “She’s a child. A child of the forest.” He shivered, as much from wonderment as cold. They had fallen into one of Old Nan’s tales.
“The First Men named us children,” the little woman said. “The giants called us woh dak nag gran, the squirrel people, because we were small and quick and fond of trees, but we are no squirrels, no children. Our name in the True Tongue means those who sing the song of earth. Before your Old Tongue was ever spoken, we had sung our songs ten thousand years.”
Meera said, “You speak the Common Tongue now.”
“For him. The Bran boy. I was born in the time of the dragon, and for two hundred years I walked the world of men, to watch and listen and learn. I might be walking still, but my legs were sore and my heart was weary, so I turned my feet for home.”
“Two hundred years?” said Meera.
The child smiled. “Men, they are the children.”

So, as the book says, the Children are small, child-size, with brown and white dappled skin and green-gold cat’s eyes. (You can also see some artistic depictions under this tag - I especially recommend the excerpt from TWOIAF.) If you had to compare them to any standard races of mythology and folklore, the Children would probably bear the most resemblance to elves — not the tall beautiful beings of faerie, but the kind that are small and close to nature.

The Others are more mysterious. GRRM has yet to explain exactly what they are, but he has said they are also non-human. Some description was given to the artist of the AGOT comic, which you can see here: “The Others are not dead. They are strange, beautiful… think, oh… the Sidhe made of ice, something like that… a different sort of life… inhuman, elegant, dangerous.” GRRM also recommended John Picacio’s painting of the Others for the comic artist to use as basis for his depiction.

Further descriptions are given in the prologue of AGOT:

A shadow emerged from the dark of the wood. It stood in front of Royce. Tall, it was, and gaunt and hard as old bones, with flesh pale as milk. Its armor seemed to change color as it moved; here it was white as new-fallen snow, there black as shadow, everywhere dappled with the deep grey-green of the trees. The patterns ran like moonlight on water with every step it took.
…The Other slid forward on silent feet. In its hand was a longsword like none that Will had ever seen. No human metal had gone into the forging of that blade. It was alive with moonlight, translucent, a shard of crystal so thin that it seemed almost to vanish when seen edge-on. There was a faint blue shimmer to the thing, a ghost-light that played around its edges, and somehow Will knew it was sharper than any razor.
…Will saw its eyes; blue, deeper and bluer than any human eyes, a blue that burned like ice. […] The Other said something in a language that Will did not know; his voice was like the cracking of ice on a winter lake, and the words were mocking. […] Far beneath him, he heard their voices and laughter sharp as icicles.

And in Sam’s confrontation in ASOS:

The Other slid gracefully from the saddle to stand upon the snow. Sword-slim it was, and milky white. Its armor rippled and shifted as it moved, and its feet did not break the crust of the new-fallen snow.
…And then he was stumbling forward, falling more than running, really, closing his eyes and shoving the dagger blindly out before him with both hands. He heard a crack, like the sound ice makes when it breaks beneath a man’s foot, and then a screech so shrill and sharp that he went staggering backward with his hands over his muffled ears, and fell hard on his arse.
When he opened his eyes the Other’s armor was running down its legs in rivulets as pale blue blood hissed and steamed around the black dragonglass dagger in its throat. It reached down with two bone-white hands to pull out the knife, but where its fingers touched the obsidian they smoked.
Sam rolled onto his side, eyes wide as the Other shrank and puddled, dissolving away. In twenty heartbeats its flesh was gone, swirling away in a fine white mist. Beneath were bones like milkglass, pale and shiny, and they were melting too. Finally only the dragonglass dagger remained, wreathed in steam as if it were alive and sweating.

Re standard fantasy/mythological races, GRRM himself brings up the Sidhe, the “Fair Folk” — and the idea of them stealing human infants certainly makes the comparison a strong one. It isn’t clear what they do with Craster’s sons, mind you — eat them? Turn them into themselves somehow? We just don’t know yet. We simply know that they seem to be made of ice, and use ice in ways humans can’t even imagine — as armor, as swords that can shatter steel… but this also leaves them vulnerable to “frozen fire”/dragonglass/obsidian, and when they’re stabbed with it they simply melt away into water. And per legend, they may be vulnerable to Valyrian steel (aka “dragonsteel”) as well.

I’m sure there will be much more to learn about them in further books, but hope this helps for now!

your writing and recommendations are my everything and i've listened to hamilton and in the heights because of you so i have to ask; do you have a rec list for musicals?? i have 0 knowledge on them (the above two are my firsts) and i'd love to know what your favorites are!!!

all right, this has taken some time because I have, as you have probably realised, A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT MUSICALS, and I have never been tasked with so great a responsibility before. you are a blank slate! so many joys await you!!

- in some of these cases I cannot divorce my childhood from the equation and so there is no objective guarantee of quality, per se, just…feelings
- I realise seeing musicals live often ranges from inconvenient to impossible so I’ll try and note whether or not you can get a good experience from the cast album (which you often can! HAMILTON, CASE IN POINT)
- there’s a lot of stuff on youtube. if you poke around.

ok ok
