this scene for all the feelings

All About Writing Dreams.

anonymous asked:

I’m having trouble writing a scene where the character is dreaming. The thing is the chapter opens up with the dream so neither the character nor the reader know that it’s a dream and I’ve no idea how to give the scene lucid feel of dreaming and I’m also having some trouble of have to transition smoothly from the dream to the character waking up :/

I take it what you have is a situation where the reader assumes the dream is the real world at first, but as stranger and stranger things happen, they slowly grow to understand it’s not real, until it’s undeniably a dream. Some pros and cons of this type of dream sequence are:

  • You don’t have to shove any dream-like things into the opening of the dream.
  • The reader has a sense of accomplishment for figuring out it’s a dream.
  • Alternatively, the reader may feel cheated if they don’t figure out it’s a dream by the time the dream ends.
  • If you so desire, you can transition into waking by having the dreamer realizes the dream is too weird to be real.

Your other options here are to:

1) Present the dream as a dream upfront, which you could do either by writing the character falling asleep, or by very specific inclusion of dream-like places and actions at the very beginning of the dream.

2) Not let the reader understand that the dream is a dream until after the dreamer wakes. This bares the issue that there really isn’t much in the way of a dream-like world which you can create, because it will be obvious to the reader that something is off. Dreams in all mediums of storytelling are too widely used to reasonably create a world which feels like a dream without the reader/viewer jumping to the conclusion that it is, in fact, a dream.

A list of some of the things I associate with dreaming, and with the world of dreams:

okay. okay.

first, it’s important to acknowledge: yeah, that is absolutely not the way to deal with a kid. snape goes too far here & it’s important to keep that in mind. examining his head space and why he reacts the way he does isn’t my way of trying to excuse his actions, simply to put them in context and examine why snape - who is portrayed as a very calm and stern character for the most part and who we’ve never seen physically harm a student before (or after) this moment - would react that way.

what harry sees is snape’s worst memory. and it’s important to remember that snape doesn’t give harry permission to view it in any way  - harry sees the pensieve and looks. harry’s fifteen; he should know not to look at people’s private memories, esp since he already does know what a pensieve is due to his accident with dumbledore’s pensieve, which was much more innocent.

however, to be fair, harry looks out of frustration, not bc he wants to view snape’s private memories; he assumes that, like dumbledore’s pensieve, snape’s memories won’t be of a personal nature or will concern the war. part of the reason i think this moment is so important is that it humanizes snape for harry - before this, harry undoubtedly only thought of snape as a nasty teacher or a member of the order. afterward, i don’t think that’s the case, bc he realizes that snape has his own demons, his own humiliations, an actual history.

so snape comes back to find harry potter viewing one of his most private and humiliating memories, to find harry potter - a student he has worked very hard into intimidating to keep in line, a student who he wants to respect or fear him - witnessing an abject humiliation at the hands of harry’s father. even if snape were as even-tempered and kind as, say, remus, that would probably inspire some amount of stern words. but we know that snape doesn’t handle intense emotions well ESPECIALLY when he feels that he’s being humiliated or made a joke of (see poa for instance) and he often reacts with a lot of anger.

my argument for snape’s reaction: he’s humiliated and he reaches for anger first bc it’s the most familiar for him. snape grew up seeing and probably being tossed around by an angry man - that’s how he knows how to handle humiliation, how he knows to handle disciple, the first tool he instinctively reaches for when under stress. does that make it right? absolutely not. but snape’s anger and lashing out doesn’t come from nowhere, it doesn’t exist in a void, and it has an explanation.

finally, i think it’s important to read beyond that moment to harry’s reaction. harry is the recepient of this rage, the one who is being tossed around - and doubtless that might inspire some triggered feelings for harry after his childhood. but this is what he says after snape has tossed him out of the office:

He had no desire at all to return to Gryffindor Tower so early, nor to tell Ron and Hermione what he had just seen. What was making Harry feel so horrified and unhappy was not being shouted at or having jars thrown at him; it was that he knew how it felt to be humiliated in the middle of a circle of onlookers, knew exactly how Snape had felt as his father had taunted him, and that judging from what he had just seen, his father had been every bit as arrogant as Snape had always told him.

oooh, miranda for the fic recs thing? this is a great idea!

literally every single goddamn thing @sea-changed has ever written because they all star miranda and she is a spectacular miranda. the prose is always so precise; there’s a fierce emotional clarity to everything that sea-changed produces. book of days is 9k of heart-wrenching post-london james/miranda angst. a more rational burning is a lovely, pensive character study set in london, delving into miranda’s thoughts in that canon scene where she’s sitting by the window holding The Book.

The Thing Is by @drivingsideways33, a series of two fics containing ENDLESS MIRANDA FEELINGS. pri writes such a gorgeous miranda. part 1, May it happen to me (all), is the imagining of miranda and thomas’ courtship that i’ve always wanted, terrifically nuanced and smart, and part 2, A Savor of the Heart, comprises three non-linear snapshots that will probably make you cry your damn heart out; reading them is like standing in a waterfall of light.

whalebone, rigged to stem the floods by @squid-inspiration, exceedingly lovely introspective james/miranda CORSET PORN, with blindingly cute moments of happiness and thought-provoking explorations of power dynamics and gender roles. squid’s lush, sensuous descriptions are the best and it’s so easy to immerse myself in her stories.

so many of @shirogiku’s fics! Let There Be Time is the miranda groundhog day AU, so beautiful and incredibly satisfying. What Is Best is a delightful thomas/miranda pegging fic where they sneak off at a party and quote poetry while they have sex and it’s fantastic!! The Captain’s Wife, or Dangerous Liaisons is the AU where miranda’s married to james, not thomas, and it’s so much fun, it’s absolutely exhilarating and i think about this fic all the time.

Hell Hath No Fury by @flintsredhair, a FABULOUS series where miranda survives charles town and becomes flint’s partner in piracy. i love that miranda gets to finally grow; she gets to rage and relate to flint, at last, and they both start to heal themselves and each other and the connection between them. and most of the stuff meg has written features miranda and it’s all brilliant, so <3

Vain Empires by @st4rlings: miranda goes to church on new providence and thinks about her life. painful, moody introspection with really stunning prose, and i ALWAYS appreciate mentions of domme!miranda!

Time Covers All Things by lilithilien: once upon a time there was a sad dearth of miranda’s fics and i considered this fic the essential miranda fic; it’s 12k and a pretty comprehensive look at miranda’s life, written with sharp, compelling emotional honesty. now there are a lot more miranda fics out there, but this fic is definitely still worth a read. it’s searing and heartbreaking and feels very very true.

ask me for fic recs!

Okay, so I've been very out of the loop lately (referring to most of the latest Walking Dead news) & I was wondering, if you don't mind, could you help me out & fill me in on where everybody is finding all of this information? From the matriarch thing, to the deleted scenes; anything you think is important for me to know. I feel like a terrible member of this fandom. Thanks in advance 💘

Hey, @richonnedaily. Of course I’m happy to help. And you’re a wonderful member of this fandom :)

I’ve tagged you in the deleted scene.

Andrew Lincoln’s commentary can be seen here, with thanks to @camillelasin

If I can think of anything else, I’ll tag you in it.

Also, if fellow Richonners would like to add anything, please do so.

Mixing magic and mundane in W.i.t.c.h.

I’ve been watching Precure, and I have to say that the lazy way the characters’ magical powers are written is getting pretty tiring. The story is split between non-magical stuff and magical fights. There might be some kind of toy the show wants to sell that the girls need to promote even outside an action scene (like the collectible cards to change outfits shoehorned into Happiness Charge Precure! all the time), but that’s about it. And in general often the magical elements kind of feel like an afterthought in the girls’ lives. I get that the show is aimed at a pretty young audience but I don’t think it excuses lazy writing, especially considering Precure has been around for over a decade and there should have been plenty of opportunities to be a bit more innovative (not that I’ve seen every season, but I’ve never heard about any of them being praised for their immersive magical elements). There are plenty of series for everyday drama, but I watch a fantasy series because I like fantasy, so it’s a shame if half of the show is just yet another “silly everyday escapades“ story with no sign that the characters can do magic.

It is at times like this I remember how good the W.i.t.c.h. comic was about this. In it the characters use their powers in mundane situations all the time, and the stress and time management problems from the fantastic adventures follow them to their ordinary life as well. While I’m not really a fan of the way the W.i.t.c.h. girls can learn whatever random magic the plot calls for (Telepathy! Teleportation! Invisibility! Creating clones! Kandrakar’s Heart ex machina!) and would rather like it if they just stuck to elemental powers, at least the varied abilities are used well.

So this post is a compilation some scenes of how the main characters in W.i.t.c.h. use their magical powers outside action scenes/super important plot events and how being a magical girl affects their life from the first thirty-something issues I glanced through.

In the beginning of the story there’s a scene where our heroes gather and actually practice their powers. Now that I think of it, it’s kind of really weird how rare this seems to be in magical girl stories in general.

But if you knew how to do magic, there are plenty of ways to use it outside combat, right? Our heroes use their powers for mundane things like cleaning…

…taking out bullies…

…chatting during class…

…planting flowers…

Are they that bitter Jmo decided to leave? Oh man, come on Regina's fans needs reassure? Please she will be there the whole fucking season! Rumbelle also got tons of reassure too, I don't think I ever saw this much promotion especifecilly for them... But Jmo is one episode "Oh lets talk about how R is there, she is center", some ask about cs: "Oh sorry NO SPOILER now stoping caring for her!"

Us: Is there a chance for us to ever see Emma again?

A&E: Nope!

Us: Well is Hook’s mission and the feeling he’s missing something about Emma?

A&E: No, it’s definitely not about her at all - it’s a totally new story.

Us: Can you give us literally anything positive about Emma at all?

A&E: Uh…she’ll be in more than two scenes in her very last episode! How’s that?

Us: Well I’m sure her last episode will be about her story and have a lot of her in it and it’s not about anybody else?

A&E: Regina will be featured in ALL the flashbacks in 7x02!

(I do think Eddy sounds bitter about Jen - he’s the one who has said the most angering stuff and he sounds really dismissive of her)

I know I’m not the only one, but looking at my dash, it feels like I am the only person who read Eddy’s “Regina appears in all flashbacks” as “Regina appears in all flashback plots” and not “all flashback scenes”. Because one just means she appears at various points in the flashback, and the other seems untenable.

Zude Week Day 3: Favourite Quotes

So, once again I feel like we’re spoilt for choice with this one, because damn, James gave the boys some brilliant lines. And there are so many quotes among my faves, including the, “I already have a family. You”, from my favourite scene post.

Some others I love are Jude’s sass with, “He has crabs” and “The baby’s room will go here”. And then their more romantic interactions like, “I can’t even imagine you being an afterthought. I think about you first all the time” and “You’re the single greatest thing that’s ever happened to me”. Or just their use of “Stupid” as a term of endearment.

But for a favourite quote for this post, I’m going to go with “Wifey came through.” Some of you may have already seen my meta post on this, just after the episode aired, which gives the reasons why I love this line so much. So I won’t reiterate them here - you can read them if you want ;-)

Instead, I’ll just leave you with these…

Song used during Kadena scene. When Kat calls Adena after her date:

Nighttime hunger eats at me like I’m supposed to be alone
Wish that he could fill me up so that I could feel whole
Now there’s something keeping me from falling asleep
Then each morning pulls me from the deep

When the darkness comes, w-w-w-when the darkness comes
When the darkness comes, w-w-w-when the darkness comes
When the darkness comes, w-w-w-when the darkness comes

Nighttime hunger and all the fears that it brings tend to fade in the light
In daytime I build a new me but still dread the night
I try to keep moving but I can’t seem to chase my monsters away
When the darkness comes it takes everything from me
When the when the when the when the

When the darkness comes, w-w-w-when the darkness comes
When the darkness comes, w-w-w-when the darkness comes
When the darkness comes, w-w-w-when the darkness comes

“I see you,” she whispered. “I see you, wolf child. Blood child. I thought it was the lord who smelled of death…” She began to sob, her little body shaking. “You are cruel to come to my hill, cruel. I gorged on grief at Summerhall, I need none of yours. Begone from here, dark heart. Begone!” (Arya, A Storm of Swords)

She shook it to make it move, but there was only death and blood in her mouth. By now she was tiring, and it was all she could do to pull the body back to shore. (Arya, A Storm of Swords)

I could be reaching, but I feel like there can be a connection made between the Ghost of High Heart claiming that Arya smells like death and the scene in which Arya-through-Nymeria pulls her mother out of the river, filling her mouth with “death and blood.” Just another interesting point in the way of Arya meeting her mother again one day…

So are any Jonerys shippers kind of salty about the Rhaegar and Lyanna scene being cut with the Jonerys scene? Like I’m sure epic boatsex will amazing no matter what but I feel all the build up for this just to put it with Rhaegar and Lyanna is weird to me. I’m still hyped though.

anonymous asked:

I think the fact that people that ship Jonerys are just happy about everything and just focus on enjoying them in contrast to Jonsa shippers being all bitter and hating on Dany in order to validate Sansa in good ole misogynistic fashion just speaks volumes tbh. It also just feels like Both Dany and Sansa deserve much better than to be roped into a love triangle and valued on whether or not they are good enough to get the guy COME ON.

Vive la feminisme

The part of the GoT fandom that used to be the punchline is now rejoycing.Let’s be honest, if the Jonerys scenes in this season were jonsa scenes they’d be building D&D a shrine.

Both Daenerys and Sansa are incredible women and do not deserve this bullshit

Fanfiction Writer's Pain

Dean and Cas on a boat cruise, catching crabs … Dean and Cas driving through 1922 NYC, Dean buying Cas orange soda at a selling stand on Brooklyn Bridge. It is a dark story but they have that happy and sweet moments together.

And I stare at the screen and want to cry. Because a wonderful scene popped into my mind, completely finished in my head and I am so unpatient to write it. I want to read that scene NOW, don’t want to wait, don’t want to write it myself.

But I am so proud that I have invented that scene all by myself and it is only in *my* head. Only *I* can squish it out of my brain onto paper. And I am so untwisted and can’t wait and am so afraid that it will be horrible to read bc I have not taken enough time to compose and to do research. I let myself be taken away by my own writing. love the feelings I get when I am writing a really good passage. But I am so so so frightened that I can’t transport those feelings to my readers and that my writing is just boring.

Get what I want to say? Am I an exception? Am I weird? (Of course I am weird, my dear!)

all i know is that this is not how it plays out
when it ends. with the sunlight like razors and
bones like wolf flutes staying up all night.

in every love scene, there is a morning
the mirror is not the crooked tower & the body
in it does not hold itself captive for darkness.

there is a morning, the castle does not
defeat the princess. and in it, she even tames the dragon,
crosses the roped bridge of fire and lives to write about it.

that morning, she lets the light survive
through the open window because it leans in like breeze &
if there is any red, it is blooming from the sun.

and in the final act, the princess is not at war
with the stones or the water &
her feet are dancing again.

they apparently changed the age demographic from YA to explicit NA (with a warning for mature content on the back I thi but STILL) from QoS to EoS. It was fine up until the halfway point & even though I knew about the 2 extensive graphic scenes before I read the book I was kinda hoping that my copy miraculously didn't have them? But oh boy was I wroooong. They are ENDLESS and SUPER EXPLICIT & ever since that first scene there's CONSTANT talking & thinking about fucking. #velvetwrappedsteel2k17

Yech. I feel bad for her younger readers who were into the series then had to stop (if their parents were like NO SUSAN YOU’RE NOT BUYING A BOOK WITH EXPLICIT CONTENT) bc she suddenly decided to go all in on the porn.

I'm the kind of hopeful and delusional one sometimes, I hope that as time goes by with the process of him filming this new season doing the stuff that he actualy love, with people that he actually love could be such an eye opener to him, and he gets to re evaluate his life choices, is it worth it his happiness? WA is also gonna be stronger than ever this season and it's like no way it wont affect his feelings and life, so he needs to work on that matter too~

I mean I would love for his eyes to finally be opened (been waiting for a long time) so if shooting more romantic WA scenes with CP this season can help then I’m all for it lol
