Why Fans Resonate With Lance So Much and Why We’re Mad He’s a False Protagonist (spoilers I guess)

So Lance has pretty much been my favorite character since about ten seconds after he came on screen, and I’ll try to get right to the point about why I feel that way and why a giant portion of the vld fandom feels that way as well.

Obviously, Lance has been openly shown to have insecurities about his self-worth. I can’t really think of another character from a cartoon show (except maybe, like, Sokka from A;TLA) to have this plotline to this degree, but it’s a very unique and sensitive characterization that should be handled a little more carefully than it has been.

As a recap, Lance doesn’t really contribute much in the way of “hyper-specialized skills” to Voltron (aside from occasional shots of underused Sniper!Lance.) But next to him, we see 1). An ace pilot with special alien heritage and advanced hand-to-hand fighting skills who has been picked as the successor to the team’s leader 2). An Earth hero/veteran with a special prosthetic that gives him valuable fighting abilities, who pilots the oh-so-special Black Lion 3). An engineering genius 4). A tech/ex machina genius 5). A space princess with magical powers, fighting skills, and shapeshifting abilities who can ‘sense’ and ‘channel’ whatever whenever the plot needs her to.

And then, oh yeah, we’ve got…Lance. Who cracks goofy jokes.

He’s NORMAL! And it SUCKS to feel ‘normal’ when everyone around you seems so effortlessly special!

I’ve struggled with that feeling my whole life—that habit of constantly measuring myself against others and obsessing over what I can “contribute”. For the longest time, I thought I was only as valuable as what I could bring to the table. So I was shocked and awed to see a character with that same affliction. It’s odd. I’ve never had a character I resonated so strongly with. I see myself in Lance so much.

Our own insecurities are validated and reflected through Lance’s character. It’s a real emotional issue that many of us struggle with, so to see it on the screen given representation means something.

ANYWAY—Onto why Lance is a false protagonist, and why I’m pissed about it. In fiction, a false protagonist is “a literary technique, often used to make the plot more jarring or more memorable by fooling the audience’s preconceptions, that constructs a character who the audience assumes is the protagonist but is later revealed not to be.”

Seriously, think about how books typically use their prologue+main story setup. We got our prologue (Shiro and the Holts being taken) and then it opens up to what the viewers assume is the start of the “Main Story” which typically follows the main character-to-be. This is a natural pattern to follow in storytelling because it helps the viewer understand and process what role each character plays overall. Lance is the first character we got a little bit of a read on with that whole “Blah blah remember you’re just a replacement for the dropout so don’t end up like him” Garrison test flight, so that’s another reason for the viewer to latch onto him.

Watching Voltron for the first time knowing literally nothing about it going in, I knew there would be a team dynamic as episode one unfolded but thought that there would be special emphasis on Lance as the main character (think Aang from A;TLA. Yeah, there was a team of main characters, but Aang was THE main character if you get what I’m saying).

Seriously, go back and watch the first episode again if you didn’t notice it the first time. By a writing standpoint, Lance is written in the most “This will be the main character!” way possible.

Which is why it’s so bizarre that he’s been pushed to the back-burner for so many seasons now. God, at this point, his back-burner isn’t even turned on anymore. He and Hunk are just the 3-day old pots of mac n’ cheese congealing by the sink while Shiro, Keith, and Pidge are lit up and ready to go at a moment’s notice, but at least Hunk’s Balmeran arc in season 1 spanned, like, 2 or 3 whole episodes when Lance is lucky to get anything beyond two minutes.

I’ve accepted that he’s not THE main character (I WAS starting to think it was Keith, but then he f’ed off for season 4 and I was like, no, Voltron, when we said we wanted less Keith we just meant we needed a better balance of characters not the entire removal of one) (and anyway how bad is it that even when Keith’s character is finally drawn back a little bit, WE STILL. GET. NO. LANCE (or Hunk). ARC.)

Still, the dynamic from a writer’s standpoint is a little clunky. In my experience, stories are best told when they revolve around a singular main character, or two, like Gravity Falls for example. But things fall apart and get messy, especially in a television format, if you try to sell 5 main characters (six if you count Allura) as equally important (story-wise) right from the start. It just doesn’t work. It’s only natural to latch onto one or two characters and that’s why we keep getting these “Just wait, Lance will get his (3 second, never mentioned again or brought forward into a new season) moment!” promises. Good storytelling just doesn’t evolve well when you try to juggle five characters as all equally THE main character. And it ESPECIALLY feels super-clunky since Lance was introduced in episode one of the whole show as the potential main character and then used mostly for comic-relief ever since.

And when I say I want a Lance arc, I don’t mean “I want a Lance arc where Lance helps Keith learn to lead” or whatever—NO, GODDAMMIT. I WANT. AN ARC. FOCUSED SPECIFICALLY ON LANCE. NOT ON LANCE GROWING AS A SUPPORT FOR OTHER CHARACTERS’ GROWTH.

I was actually hoping that whole “Lance Dies in season 4!” worry going around would be true because 1). Lance obviously wouldn’t die for-real, so I wasn’t even worried about that 2). It would mean we would actually be getting what could have been a very emotional and quality Lance-focused story arc longer than three minutes.

I’m actually starting to think Lance isn’t going to get a story arc that spans across a few episodes that also remains the driving theme of those episodes. I think it will be another tossed-out line regarding his insecurity and that will be it.

I wanted Lance to be the Black Paladin so freaking bad, you guys! It would have been such a twist, such a moment for him to show off the leadership skills he’s been quietly accumulating. AND HOW ANGRY WAS I IN SEASON 4 WHEN LANCE LOGICALLY SAID “HM, MAYBE WE SHOULDN’T STAND UNDER THESE GENERATOR THINGS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY COULD FORM A FORCE FIELD AT ANY TIME” AND SHIRO BASICALLY SAID “WAIT HOLD ON, WE HAVE TO INVESTIGATE WHAT IT IS BY STANDING EXACTLY WHERE WE ARE.” WTF. LANCE, WHY ARE YOU SO IGNORED.

Anyway, it’s late and I’m cranky and kind of forgot where I was going with this but I’m signing off, passively hoping that maybe Lance will one day get his huge “I’m Keith and I get whole seasons dedicated to me” arc.

But it probably won’t happen.

I’m going back to bed.

Next Generation HP Things
  • Teddy is “the cool cousin.”
  • James is “that little bastard who keeps messing up his potions on purpose to see the ‘pretty fireworks’”.
  • Albus is “oh god, not another one. He’s going to be just like his brother!” (except he’s not just like his brother. He actually tries.)
  • Lily is a sweetheart. Need I say more? She’s obviously a sweetheart. Except… she’s got a bit of her oldest brother’s mischievous streak, so she likes to explode potions, too.
  • Scorpius and Albus are friends and both in Slytherin, because I like the idea of a Potter being in Slytherin, but I’m not too fond of the “Scorpius HAS to be not Slytherin thing.”
  • Everyone thinks they’re dating. They’re THAT pair of friends that always sits really close together and steals each other’s pumpkin juice and shares books.
  • They aren’t? They are? Who knows?
  • Lysander and Lorcan are really popular in their houses. One is Ravenclaw and one is Hufflepuff and they’ve got a whole tutoring system set up with Rose.
  • Rose is, in the teachers’ books, “most likely to get out of here alive, just like her mom.”
  • Teddy gets a job at Hogwarts doing Merlin-knows-what because Harry has a life crisis and is like, “I NEED SOMEONE KEEPING AN EYE ON MY CHILDREN SO THEY DON’T DIE LIKE I NEARLY DID!!!!!”
  • Neville offers but Harry’s like, “Neville, you had enough dealing with me.” and Neville’s like, “You’re right. Good plan.”
  • Victoire is a healer. She’s really damn good at it.
  • George’s kids are banned from having any of their dad’s merchandise on campus. The teachers just aren’t taking the chance.
  • Draco and Harry are Quidditch Dads who have angry face-offs in the bleachers even though their kids are on the SAME DAMN TEAM. It’s ridiculous.
  • Headmistress McGonagall gives the two of them detention before remembering they graduated and have jobs and lives.
  • They’re nice guys (are they?) so they sit through two hours of detention with Aunt Minerva (but don’t call her that if you want to live).
  • Rose and Hugo are inseparable Hugo’s first year because he’s nervous as hell, but then he makes friends and starts a club devoted to continuing  his uncles’ (Fred and George’s) legacy as pranksters.
  • Everyone thinks it’s Roxanne and Fred II until Hugo feels guilty and turns himself in.
  • The teachers are SHOCKED.
  • He gives them the Sad Weasley Eyes and gets his detention time cut in half.
  • Scorpius and Albus get too close to each other during Quidditch and Albus knocks Scorpius off his broom. It looks like he could do one of two things: Catch the goddamn snitch or rescue his friend.
  • He doesn’t think twice before rescuing his friend.
  • Later everyone asks Scorpius if he was scared and he says, “For a second, but then I remembered Al was right there and I wasn’t scared anymore. I knew he’d help me, ‘cause I’d do the same for him.”
  • Cue the chorus of “aaaaaaaawwwwwwww!”
  • I’m done here. It’s midnight and I’m rambling and my sister would be so ashamed.

My headcanon for a Driftrod newspark is a figure eight shaped bean that develops into a sparkling with Rodimus's feet-and-calves and Drift's thighs, so the poor little thing is 80% leg. Rodi lets him sit in his lap in the captains chair when he's on deck duty and explains how everything on the bridge works, which leads to him being more productive so Magnus doesn't complain, and Drift wears the newspark in a sling so their sparks are close together and he can help the baby's aura develop

You know that kid is going to be all legs! Not only that but both Rodimus and Drift have huge shoulders and tiny waists, that kid would be the most adorable sparkbreaker to ever exist (wait is that cringe-y to say?)

Also I would love it if their First was an accident, I also would adore it if Drift carried I know, I know, but just think about how much Drift could absolutely annoy Ratchet talking about keeping it natural and such

And just… Drift talking about doing it like they did in the old days and Ratchets just like… they invented medicine for a reason you dolt! And it makes me happy

And to go back to the not knowing part, like I can’t imagine either of them would really start to consider kiddos at any point in time in the near future and like it’s not a bad surprise both of them are so happy! They find out and they cry, they hear the first sparkbeat and they cry, they start packing up a room for some space and they cry

Rodimus definitely cries for like the first three months, they’re just??? So cute???

Plus figure eight baby is perfect for chest cuddles, definitely adores being held, is also definitely a little terror sometimes

Rodimus and Drift would be the most caring empathic parents in the world, they care so much and love their kiddos with all their hearts

I know they’re often portrayed as hair brained parents who can’t control their kids but I’m not about that, I think they would care with everything they are and learn all they could, they also have a lot of friends who want them to do well!

Their kiddo would also definitely be super fast, you didn’t mention an alt mode so I’m just gonna with the :two speedsters: = :one speedster: human kinda thing because why not so like, I see the baby as a cute little light blue and white with some dark purple highlights? Probably has drifts little hip bubbles on both his arms and legs but a smoother hood like Rodimus in his alt mode but the little bubbles as wheel housing, also finials and a spoiler

Also I love the idea that Rodimus, despite his hatred for hats, gets his lil babe one to wear when he’s sitting up on the bridge, their own lil captains hat

Also he definitely calls the kiddo captain on the bridge and has definitely held them up to Magnus when he doesn’t really feel like answering something mundane and boring as the kiddo giggles and holds their arms out, even Ultra Magnus can’t resist the lil bean

Rodimus would definitely be more productive though, reads reports out loud to the kiddo and in doing so actually understands them better, also wants to prove now more then ever he’s a good captain, he wants his kid to be beyond proud of him one day

Drift on the other hand, is probably doing baby yoga with the kiddo, has read all the baby books 27 times, definitely does the sling thing that’s not even a joke, meditates with the babe in his lap, teaches the baby swords way to early, causally asks Ratchet 509 questions a day, whenever Rodimus does not have the baby Drift has the baby

Where I think Rodimus would be the ‘look at all this cool stuff you can do!’ Parent, Drift would be the ‘go have fun, here’s a knife’ parent, like I totally see Rodimus as the worrier and Drift as a more Primus will guide you where you need to go kind of parent

(Ok this is probably to much but I really like the idea of driftrod kiddos? I hope you didn’t hate this)

For pink-harajuku and two anons!

Like father like son…? Except Siegbert is super adorable and actually kind of innocent and sweet NOT LIKE HIS THIRSTY FATHER. Disclaimers as usual!

EDIT: Ack! I forgot to mention there are slight game spoilers in his S-Rank line kind of like Shinonome’s.

a reason why rey/finn didn't really click, for me, during TFA was simply the fact that it felt almost felt forced. They've known each other for a really limited amount of time. Though, I think after a second viewing I won't feel this way so much, because as I watched TFA I was so afraid that they would kiss and get together, but now knowing that doesn't happen, I can sit back and relax and enjoy their interactions. Idk i think i personally like slow build, it's more natural...

I MEAN i don’t want to be like, YOUR FEELINGS ARE WRONG because! everyone reads situations differently etc. but i did want to get a little into why they didn’t feel forced for me. i think you hit the main point on the head (and i do hope that it improves for you on the rewatch because of that), which is that they didn’t push a These Characters Are Totally In Love narrative on us in the course of one movie that happens over a few days (thankfully).

long ass meta below the cut im going to hell
