BTS Explain Concepts Behind ‘Love Yourself: Her’ Album: 'This Is the Beginning of Our Chapter Two’

Mere hours before the release of BTS'Love Yourself: Her, the album’s significance wasn’t lost on the group’s leader, Rap Monster.

“It’s really a huge, big step for us,” the 23-year-old rapper/songwriter/producer told Billboard during a phone call from Seoul. “Of course, every member is so excited about the album. We’ve been just practicing until now, day and night, to show these new songs and perfected performances. I left a message on our fan cafe, the other day, after we finished that 'this EP will mark the turning point of BTS’ and even though the wait felt really long with this album – I think it was the huge event, the BBMAs, were in May – so much has happened.”

The wait has been particularly anticipated for for the band’s famously passionate fan base, known as Army, who have been waiting for new tracks from Rap Monster, Jimin, Suga, J-Hope, Jin, V and Jungkook band after voting them Top Social Artist at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards over fellow pop juggernauts Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez and Shawn Mendes.

Since then, the BTS guys have landed distribution deals with Amazon and U.S.-based The Orchard (“We believe the physical album, still, really counts and it’s really important to connect with our fans around the world,” Rap Monster said) and hung out with worldwide chart-toppers like Major Lazer, Halsey, Charli XCX(“Maybe it’s just my sixth sense, but I think maybe we will be collaborating with even more interesting artists,” he added); even snagging The Chainsmokers to produce a beat for Love Yourself: Her.

One listen to the tightly produced record – which looks likely to make a big splash on the Billboard 200 next week – and the passion is palpable from the intense lead single “DNA,” the societal commentary in “Go Go,” among multiple lyrics and moments that feel ripped from the members’ personal journals. There’s also loads of passion in Rap Monster’s voice talking about these new songs as he sees and envisions the larger picture and message for his band’s latest batch of forward-thinking EDM, hip-hop and pop tracks. Let’s start right from the beginning with “Serendipity.” Why was this the right song to choose as the intro and kick off the era?

When I wrote the lyrics, melodies and the first themes of “Serendipity,” I tried to come up with some rare things you find in life, something very special, like the calico, three-striped cat; things that have extraordinary meanings in people’s lives. I wanted to share this moment.

I was reading the lyrics are gender neutral, which I think is really powerful. Was that a conscious decision?

The lyrics were based on rare and special things in life. So, I thought, those feelings transcend genders, cultures and barriers between people.

We always put out the “Intro” just before releasing our single, so the intro is taking the role of telling the concept of this album. But “Serendipity” was actually the right song to share the feelings of our single, “DNA.” The title is about how our DNA is connected in the universe, I think that was the right feel for this album.

Let’s talk about “DNA.” How does this single continue and progress the story of BTS?

When we’re talking about our title tracks, “DNA” is about the expression of a young, passionate love. The lyrics are like, “The two of us our connected fatefully from the start, our DNA was just the one thing.” At the same time, “DNA” is taking BTS to new ground. We tried to apply new grammar and perspectives – if you listen to the song, you’ll understand what I’m trying to say – it’s very different from our previous music, technically and musically. I believe it’s going to be the starting point of a second chapter of our career; the beginning of our Chapter Two.

“Best of Me” is really impressive. It sounds like The Chainsmokers, but it also sounds like BTS. You didn’t lose yourself which isn’t easy when collaborating with new artists. What was that process like?

I love that track! We met them at BBMAs, we were so lucky. Actually, they invited us to their concert just the other day – they had a huge concert in Korea and we sang “Closer” together. For “Best of Me,” they gave us several tracks and samples months ago, we and our producers picked one sample, like, “Okay, this is fit for our next album.” So we worked on it, we sent it to them, we asked them what they think of the track we developed and got their opinions. And we made it! I’m so excited for it. [Laughs]

Your albums always have deeper social and society commentaries. Let’s talk about some of the topics with this release. “Go Go” instantly comes to mind.

“Go Go” is a trendy song, but it’s about how our young generation are living their lives with low expectations and standards so people are upset with reality; they have little hope and there’s so much economic hardship. We wanted to say something about it and emphasize to the world that it’s not their choice, but brutal reality that forces people to live and spend as if there’s no future.

But in Korea, “YOLO” has become a big key word for young people because we don’t have money and it’s really hard to get a chance to earn a lot of money. I think society has a lot of problems for young people. Young people spend their money on claw crane machines at arcades and they spend like $30 on trying to win these dolls. And then it’s like, “Oh! I spent all my money…shit. But I don’t regret.” That’s the biggest luxury for Korea’s young people: collecting accessories, cosmetics, that’s what they think is a luxury. It’s “YOLO” because it’s like, “I’m gonna buy all this! I’m gonna buy all this food and I’m going to eat it! I’m going to do it!” I think it’s sad because it’s all we can. “Go Go” is just saying, “Okay, just do it, we won’t regret it. Just spend several bucks on the machine and eat the food!” But at the same time, the song is very easily to sing along to so I think many people will like that song, especially if they find the deeper meaning.

Of course, I have to ask about making a skit interlude out of your BBMAs acceptance speech.

You need to hear “Mic Drop” because the skit was my speech at BBMAs –  because that was a big moment for our history – and then we put “Mic Drop” next to that because it’s like a flex – like, “Okay, we’re done. We don’t need to give a shit about anything.” That was the right skit and follow-up song for this album.

The last song, “Outro: Her” really spoke to me. It almost reads like a diary.

After talking with you, it feels like it recaps the whole album and is really introspective.

I think that was the fastest work I did for this album. I wrote the verse in 20 minutes; it just came, very truthfully, from the bottom of my heart. I thought it was the right outro for this album because it is really a range of emotions – I’m saying I met this person that I really love, this person is the love of my life right now, I’m saying that I was confused and I was looking for love and this world is complex. But I think it’s you so, “I call you 'her,’ 'cause you’re my tear.” “I think you’re the start and the end of me.” That’s what I’m saying: You’re my wonder, but you’re also my answers. You’re my “her,” but you’re still the “tear.”

The hook is saying that love is not all about the happiness, it’s just not just about the joy, it’s not just about delight. If you want to love a person, you should know that there are tears and there can even be hatred inside of it. I think a love really includes all of that. That’s what I was trying to say. It’s complex.

And if fans are so lucky to own the physical album, they’ll hear two hidden tracks at the very. Why keep them secretive?

I think they’re hidden because you have to be a real fan of BTS to understand them. Otherwise, you won’t. Otherwise, you’d like be, “Why are they feeling so confused about things? They’re good?!? They’re No. 1 somewhere, they have so much stuff, why are they worried?” People always talk about that. But if you are true fan of BTS and you buy the album and you listen to the hidden track – if you are an Army and we spent time together from 2013, 2014 – they could understand. It’s kind of more special, more closer, to our true hearts.

How Sony deals with fandoms

I’ve been to an international in-house PR summit hosted by one of my clients this week and nearly fell off my chair when one of the guest speakers was a VERY important person from Sony Music Entertainment. Let’s call him John. I won’t disclose his function and real name because I don’t want to reveal where I was, but based on his title he definitely knows what he‘s saying and has a lot of industry experience.

His speech was mainly  about how to engage with a variety of different target audiences. Of bloody course one of the first slides he showed was a picture of 1D engaging with fans which was supposed to drive the point home that there are some audiences who are more passionate about a brand than others.He mentioned then that he’s worked with 1D on their albums which drove me into a bit of a freeze.

Because I’m embarrassing, I recorded parts of his speech on my phone and wrote the most important things down to share some interesting insights he gave about how Sony manages their artists’ target audiences, crafts their artists’ social media actions and deals with the fact that at the end of the day they always need to get people to buy music.

 

HOW DOES SONY UNDERSTAND AND MONITOR AUDIENCES (like fandoms for instance)?

According to John, they have their very own data-driven digital tool that helps them identify and manage different target groups for an artist (it’s not perfected yet but has been rolled out a lot of countries, I think he said 50?) and see where there might be connections to other artists, who the influencers are, what the specific target groups are or will be interested in and to identify collaboration opportunities.

Target groups are being split into four categories: Fanatics, enthusiasts, casuals, indifferents. These segments are being broken down into even smaller groups defined by age, genre preference, gender and country. They found that the older you get, the less likely you’ll be a fanatic or enthusiast.

How does Sony find this stuff out? Well, they survey polled music audiences of every age in a way that covers either nationally representatives or represent one of the major top tier cities. People shared their music preferences, consumption habits, lifestyle, media habits etc. Sony gathered all that information, analysed the insights and created their own audience understanding tool.

According to John, that way everyone at Sony has access to an interactive map of the world of Sony that looks into segmentations and audiences for every artist while being searchable in a number of different ways. The tool is pulling from real data, but they are also adding to that „with things like analytics of platforms like Spotify where we are able to gather lots of informations about user behaviours and reference that against things that we do“.

 

HOW SONY STRATEGICALLY SHAPES PR STORIES

John gave the example of Snoop Doggy Dog who had launched a new album (song? Idk) around that time: „There was a week-long debate in parliament around the legalization of Marihuana, so we just jumped on this conversation and did lots of social marketing around Snoop with his rolling papers and his spliffs… so maybe that’s bad taste, I’ll allow you to judge that for yourselves. The point is though that you are also marketing into a wider cultural context. [You need] an understanding how that works and where you can have a conversation that is seamless and not fake, genuineness is quite important.

“The way you can get people to connect is: You’ve got a lot of stuff that you want to say. Start under the assumption that people actually don’t give a shit about 95 percent of it. And then see which are the bits that might overlap. This is where the understanding of the audience really comes into its own. It forces us to think before we jump to execution. The quest for relevance is vitally important.”

Why are people to connect with a brand/band though? John thinks this is one of the most underused questions when planning an approach. Why is it that they do specific things? He gave an example: „We would normally take a record to radio because we always believe that radio is the thing that breaks the record. But if my core audience, my phase one audience – the people that are gonna give that band its first lift – are on Spotify, what am I doing on radio??“


ENGAGEMENT AROUND ARTIST IS KEY

„The thing is that you don’t start with a conversation around a product. The consumption of the product is the end point of a journey where you built an engagement and a fan. So again, for us that means that when we sit down and do our plan around our next Robbie Williams album, we start with „How are we gonna maximize the engagement around Robbie Williams“? because that will then sell us albums. Not „Okay, we’ll be releasing in a week in November, eight weeks out we need to be here, here and here“. So we’re not doing product launches anymore unless [it is suitable for the target demographic]. We have to built a tension and an engagement around an artist.“

 

ABOUT THEIR ARTISTS‘ SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS

„We run most of our artists social media channels or at least their official  pages, so we are involved in all of those conversations.“

Based on the situation we face in this fandom,with this band, feel free to draw your own conclusions about what this information means.

HERE ARE MY KEY TAKEAWAYS:

1.       It’s not news at all, but the existence of their own audience understandig tool confirms it: the 1D fandom is being monitored, segmented and analyzed. Sony’s strategies are tightly tied to that fact. Collaborations or artist interactions such as Louis/James Arthur or One Direction/ Little Mix are most likely the result of a data-driven analysis of whose fan groups are similar and whose are likely to be open towards that particular other artist too.

2.       Again no news, but the example of Snoop Doggy Dog shows that there are strategies behind even the most random photos. Often placements of specific pictures or stories serve a wider purpose. Hello pap walks, hello b**ygate, hello Louis Twitter, hello Liam visibly being linked to L.A.‘s cool singer/songwriter crowd before his first album drop.  

3.       The decision to not promote Louis‘ song could very well have been a logical outcome of the team asking themselves the question „Why?“: Why should we promote his song with huge effort when we KNOW his own fans are going to do it passionately, especially if they think  we don’t give a shit? Why not playing that game in order to make them promo it the hardest way they can?“ Why indeed??

4.       One Direction is a huge deal for Sony. John was talking about a lot of bands during his speech but whenever he was talking about major acts, he always listed One Direction amongst them (along with gems like Beyonce, David Bowie, Adele). He name-dropped them at least 5 -6 times in a 60 minute speech. He really didn’t have to because the audience was in no way whatsoever a target audience. So yes, they clearly have been and are a very huge deal for them.

5.       The part about social media? Well :))))))

Notebook ideas!

  •  make a 2017 read list of all the books (even fanfics!) of what you have read this year. especially good if you are doing the 50 books a year challenge. add things like a sentence of what you thought, anything special, a quote and the date when you finished reading it.
  •  a notebook full of your favourite recipes, could be easy pot noodle or grandmas christmas dinner. now you have a place to save them all, and you will always know where to look for them!!
  • the collection notebook: are you one of those people that collects anything, stamps, stickers or cards? put them in an unused notebook.
  • plant notebook: write down the progress of your plants, their english and latin name, dates. add pictures! Neville Longbottom probably has one of these.
  • plant notebook 2.0: fill it with loads of plants you either have or want to have and write how they should be taken care of or what you would like to name them. sort of like a guide.
  • the standard: travel journal. although, since you are probably on the road, only write a few lines every day and put all that love effort in when you come home! photos, cards, stickers, flight and train tickests, pressed flowers, even the bill from that lovely restuarant is something you can put in.
  • quote book: especially handy if it is a small pocket notebook one. all those quotes you love, put em here!
  • future destinations, places you want to go to.
  •  the everyday notebook: everything for everyday. daily lists or weekly. things you want to do this month.
  • the job book: future ideas for your next summer/part time job, where to go and tips and tricks.
  • photo album: make use of all those pictures and save them somewhere. write names, where and the date, your future self will thank you.
  • the random lists book: include list like healthy habits you want to develop, dishes you want to try, vehicles you want to travel in, festivals you want to go to, books you want to read.
  • books to read: if you are a big reader like me, you will probably find the need of this book. every single book title that sounded interesting, all the books you think you might wnat to read someday, put them in this book! Hermione Granger has this.
  • a word a day book: after each and every day you write a word, could be about anyhting! a perfect bedside table notebook.
  • the notebook with only good, positive things that you enjoy. could be things like the rain falling when you are studying in a cozy library or laughing until your tummy hurts with your friends, the feeling of being invincible.
  • different language phrases: Wie heisst du? Jag heter Sara. 
  • notebook for handwriting practise

To all of those who might need some insperation. This is usually not my thing, but give me your thoughts. Also, I am a huge fan of pretty notebooks, and I own quite a few.

Recap time! A few things happened on social medias these past few days with some of the Camren story protagonists, which ends up being this big confusing hilarious mess that I tried to figure out 😂

Disclaimer : I’ve checked all the posts myself, they all happened. And any opinion or theory I share in this post is completely personal.

First stop we have Alexa! One of Lauren’s best friend who liked one of Camila’s pics a couple days ago - it already happened before, which suggest that even though it seems like Camila and Lauren aren’t in good terms, they actually are - or Alexa is not a very loyal friend.

Then enters Lucy! Supposedly Lauren’s ex girlfriend or at the very least Lauren’s ex best friend, who also liked one of Camila’s pictures. Now we all pretty much know that Lucy and Lauren aren’t on the best terms right now - Lucy made it pretty clear by liking a few comments concerning Lauren. So that could be your classic “I’m pissed at you so I’m gonna like your ex girlfriend’s picture” move. Lucy already liked a couple of Camila’s picture in the past couple of months.

Next we have Lauren! Who liked a somehow confusing tweet who could either reference Camila or her “relationship” with Ty. 

Next stop we have Camila! Who liked one of Ty’s ig post. The post in itself is really weird - it’s for his new music video and the first few shots are of a hot girl coming out of a car (not Lauren) and then it’s him shaking hands with other rappers, and his caption of the post is “❤️ 😍 😘” - not sure if those emojis are for the girl or the rappers but it’s weird 😂  Anyhoo, Camila liked, and I get that it can be confusing, I was confused, I was like “what are you doing mija?” but then I thought about it for a sec and it actually makes a lot of sense, but I’ll get back to that in the conclusion of the post.

And next is Ty posting a Tyren pic dun dun dun! Well we’ve been waiting on that one for a while. A real Tyren pic, where you can actually see their faces and in which they actually look like a couple.

I’ll give you my thoughts on that in a sec

Coming up next is…. Captain Dinah Jane! Who liked and commented on the Tyren pic ! She also commented with seven black hearts, yes black hearts - seriously who comments on a happy couply pic with black hearts? I’m sure some will say that it’s because the pic is in black and white, but I’m not convinced by that.

Also some of you will tell me “Don’t call her Captain! She’s not captain anymore!” well, isn’t she though? 😏

And finally here comes out last act, which I only discovered this morning, Alessandro! Well technically not him directly, but the GUESS photographer who posted, I realize we don’t have a shit name for them, Camilandro? Camissandro? Alemila? pics, and captioning them “love birds” with also a black heart! What’s up with that?

Alright! Now I’m gonna give you my personal opinion, my theory, on what I think of all of this, and why it didn’t make my Camren heart waver for even a second.

Remember before anything else that 5H and Camila are still under the same label and that their p.r are very certainly working together.

As we all know, we are right now in quite a bit of a promotional time, with 5H announcing the release of their new album , Camila releasing Havana and OMG plus her GUESS and L’Oréal campaigns, and also Ty releasing a new music video. It’s the perfect time for their p.r teams to work their magic. 

Now, there’s nothing better than a little romance to attract the people! Making Tyren official at this particular moment assures them extra promotion. Because believe it or not, a lot of people are stupid enough to tell themselves “Oh Lauren is dating Ty! Wonder what is music is like? Maybe he’s gonna talk about Lauren in his new album! I gotta listen to that!” or “Oh Ty is dating Lauren! She’s hot, actually all the girls in 5H are hot! Oh they have an album coming out! Maybe Lauren wrote about Ty in it! I gotta listen to that!” - it’s idiotic but it’s true! And I’m no better tbh, even if Camila’s album was the worst album in the world (would never happen cause she’s a legend) I would still listen the shit out of it just for Camren, because “Maybe Camila wrote about Lauren in it! I gotta listen to that!” (she definitely did 🌚)

It’s a very simple strategy. Some of you will tell me “why haven’t they use it before for Down for example” - well Down wasn’t promoted at all and you don’t waste a p.r relationship on a unpromoted song. Making them official now will also earn them a few headlines, get them in the medias right before the album release. I’m betting that we’re gonna see more and more of Tyren in the next few weeks.

Now, how does Camila come into this? And why would she like a Ty pic?  Well just like always, you needs to shut those Camren shippers up! They pick up on everything don’t they?! Surely they’ll pick up on that! They just need one like, and that’s easily negotiated between p.r teams. The fact that the Tyren pic is in the exact position as the Laucy pic is just bonus for us, I mean sometimes I feel like they’re just giving us material 😂

Also having Dinah Jane, the captain, Camila’s best friend (yes, present time), like and comment on the pic is supposed to be the final nail in the Camren coffin. But we all remember that Dinah has already been an accessory in the p.r game back in Dorito Boy days, and I’m sure this time is no different. It’s also my very personal opinion that those black hearts aren’t a coincidence and that maybe Dinah is trying to slip us a little message, but that belongs in the higher delulu level.

And then we have Camilandro? Camissandro? Alemila? who couldn’t be more obvious if they wanted to. That’s your classic campaign promo p.r move - they’re in a hot photoshoot together, they’re close enough in it to make people fantasize about a possible relationship, which then will make people look closer at each of them, which will start speculations, then maybe the medias will get to it, which then will beneficiate the campaign and Camila’s career and straight image and blah blah blah…

So in conclusion, all of this happening at the same time during a very promotional period makes me strongly believe that most of it is bullshit. You may think that I’m trying to find excuses and what not, and that I’m just completely delulu, but tbh I don’t care. All of this is just too weird and well organized to be simply the work of fate. 

Theory time.........

There was something about this whole narrative, that wasn’t adding up for me. I was having a hard time putting my finger on it, then Camila released that description about her album, and it started making more sense.

They want us to believe, this whole narrative took place in 2016, but when you remember back and realize, the 2016 narrative was just a revamped version of the 2015 narrative, it all begins to fall into place.

Everyone latched on to that July 4 2016 Brazil snap, of her alone, writing in a hotel bathroom, while the girls were out celebrating together, as the time she began writing “I have questions”. That’s exactly what Management hoped you’d do. If one paid attention though, you would see that the more important snap happened back in October 2016. She snapped a photo of her writing in a bathroom, with the caption ”destroyed”. First, July - October does not equal 6 months, no matter how crappy your math is. Second, the 7/27 tour was coming to an end, and with that caption, I actually think, that is when she finished writing “I have questions”.

The only tour date they had in early 2016, was Dubai. So, unless she started writing it in a Dubai potty, the rest of early 2016 was spent promoting WFH. She stated she started writing that song, “a little over a year ago” while on tour. I think her “a little over a year ago” means the last few months of 2015, September-November. That she eventually had to face her problems, and she finally went back to the lyrics she started from the year before, and finished the song, then wrote a sad song every day until she got sick of writing sad shit. That song seems to be a catalyst for her, and I’m thinking it probably  “destroyed” her to finally finish it.

Camila was asked recently, in an interview, when her anxiety showed itself and started becoming a real problem for her. Her answer was, 2015. Everything started in 2015. Her anxiety, the fucking narrative, the division, EVERYTHING!!

Q: Let’s start right from the beginning with “Serendipity.” Why was this the right song to choose as the intro and kick off the era?

When I wrote the lyrics, melodies and the first themes of “Serendipity,” I tried to come up with some rare things you find in life, something very special, like the calico, three-striped cat; things that have extraordinary meanings in people’s lives. I wanted to share this moment.

Q: I was reading the lyrics are gender neutral, which I think is really powerful. Was that a conscious decision?

The lyrics were based on rare and special things in life. So, I thought, those feelings transcend genders, cultures and barriers between people.We always put out the “Intro” just before releasing our single, so the intro is taking the role of telling the concept of this album. But “Serendipity” was actually the right song to share the feelings of our single, “DNA.” The title is about how our DNA is connected in the universe, I think that was the right feel for this album.

Q: Let’s talk about “DNA.” How does this single continue and progress the story of BTS?

When we’re talking about our title tracks, “DNA” is about the expression of a young, passionate love. The lyrics are like, “The two of us our connected fatefully from the start, our DNA was just the one thing.” At the same time, “DNA” is taking BTS to new ground. We tried to apply new grammar and perspectives – if you listen to the song, you’ll understand what I’m trying to say – it’s very different from our previous music, technically and musically. I believe it’s going to be the starting point of a second chapter of our career; the beginning of our Chapter Two.

Q: “Best of Me” is really impressive. It sounds like The Chainsmokers, but it also sounds like BTS. You didn’t lose yourself which isn’t easy when collaborating with new artists. What was that process like?

I love that track! We met them at BBMAs, we were so lucky. Actually, they invited us to their concert just the other day – they had a huge concert in Korea and we sang “Closer” together. For “Best of Me,” they gave us several tracks and samples months ago, we and our producers picked one sample, like, “Okay, this is fit for our next album.” So we worked on it, we sent it to them, we asked them what they think of the track we developed and got their opinions. And we made it! I’m so excited for it. [Laughs]

Q: Your albums always have deeper social and society commentaries. Let’s talk about some of the topics with this release. “Go Go” instantly comes to mind.

“Go Go” is a trendy song, but it’s about how our young generation are living their lives with low expectations and standards so people are upset with reality; they have little hope and there’s so much economic hardship. We wanted to say something about it and emphasize to the world that it’s not their choice, but brutal reality that forces people to live and spend as if there’s no future. But in Korea, “YOLO” has become a big key word for young people because we don’t have money and it’s really hard to get a chance to earn a lot of money. I think society has a lot of problems for young people. Young people spend their money on claw crane machines at arcades and they spend like $30 on trying to win these dolls. And then it’s like, “Oh! I spent all my money…shit. But I don’t regret.” That’s the biggest luxury for Korea’s young people: collecting accessories, cosmetics, that’s what they think is a luxury. It’s “YOLO” because it’s like, “I’m gonna buy allthis! I’m gonna buy all this food and I’m going to eat it! I’m going to do it!” I think it’s sad because it’s all we can. “Go Go” is just saying, “Okay, just do it, we won’t regret it. Just spend several bucks on the machine and eat the food!” But at the same time, the song is very easily to sing along to so I think many people will like that song, especially if they find the deeper meaning.

Q: Of course, I have to ask about making a skit interlude out of your BBMAs acceptance speech.

You need to hear “Mic Drop” because the skit was my speech at BBMAs –  because that was a big moment for our history – and then we put “Mic Drop” next to that because it’s like a flex – like, “Okay, we’re done. We don’t need to give a shit about anything.” That was the right skit and follow-up song for this album.

The last song, “Outro: Her” really spoke to me. It almost reads like a diary.

Q: After talking with you, it feels like it recaps the whole album and is really introspective.

I think that was the fastest work I did for this album. I wrote the verse in 20 minutes; it just came, very truthfully, from the bottom of my heart. I thought it was the right outro for this album because it is really a range of emotions – I’m saying I met this person that I really love, this person is the love of my life right now, I’m saying that I was confused and I was looking for love and this world is complex. But I think it’s you so, “I call you 'her,’ 'cause you’re my tear.” “I think you’re the start and the end of me.” That’s what I’m saying: You’re my wonder, but you’re also my answers. You’re my “her,” but you’re still the “tear.”

The hook is saying that love is not all about the happiness, it’s just not just about the joy, it’s not just about delight. If you want to love a person, you should know that there are tears and there can even be hatred inside of it. I think a love really includes all of that. That’s what I was trying to say. It’s complex.

Q: And if fans are so lucky to own the physical album, they’ll hear two hidden tracks at the very. Why keep them secretive?

I think they’re hidden because you have to be a real fan of BTS to understand them. Otherwise, you won’t. Otherwise, you’d like be, “Why are they feeling so confused about things? They’re good?!? They’re No. 1 somewhere, they have so much stuff, why are they worried?” People always talk about that. But if you are true fan of BTS and you buy the album and you listen to the hidden track – if you are an Army and we spent time together from 2013, 2014 – they could understand. It’s kind of more special, more closer, to our true hearts.

“Fifth Harmony” as a self titled album represents for what they’ve created over the past 5 years. It’s a reminder of what they’ve overcome to be finally established as artists that are FINALLY taken seriously and accepted for their craft. I’m overwhelmed. The vocals are astounding. I’m never usually speechless but, wow. Their talent is endless. This is their year. For them as a group, and Camila as a solo artist. Sophisticated, raw and lyrically flawless. However, we’ve had the second single “He Like That” drop with a video yesterday. Now, A lot of you aren’t going to agree with me, but for the first time ever, I felt uncomfortable watching the girl’s visuals. There’s a great difference between sensuality and sexuality. Their team should have made it sensual and flirty instead of exploiting sex. I felt like I was subconsciously watching an orgy. Imitating sexual acts and been touched inappropriately, is disgusting. That’s all well and good, but when you’ve got a majority fanbase built out of younger children and teens, that’s completely inappropriate. The fact Ally had to set boundaries, to make sure she was comfortable with the touching says a lot. There shouldn’t need to be any boundaries at all because the girls shouldn’t be put in that position. Ally being the oldest member of the group feels the most uncomfortable, and it’s the same age representation as in the fandom. Older fans feel more embarrassed about the blatant sexualisation that the younger ones, and this is why its worrying. We talk a lot about the industry sexualising young women, this video is your prime example, and it all points back to the label. The girls are worth SO much more than imitating sexual acts on dancers for views. I feel genuinely disappointed that young teenage girls will see this and think it’s okay to emulate their behaviour. If they want to address sex/sexuality in their music videos, it should be done morally. The second single release is so important. Their team should have released “Bridges” as the next single for sure. That song is present, real and empowering. It would have been much more fundamental than the video they just dropped. I do think there’s major potential to come from the album. Yeah, “sex sells” but Management need to put the girl’s talent before their assets. I hope this isn’t a taster of what’s to come because if it is, I’d rather not have a visual to the soundtrack, just the music. Anyway, it’s inevitable that this will be their third and final album. They’ve reached their peak as a group, therefore now feels the right time to experience their individual musical endeavours. It’s a now or never kind of thing. The whole group dynamic has shifted and regardless of what people say, there’s a huge void left in result of Camila’s departure. The girls are persistently uncomfortable, and you can tell Dinah is still hurting. This album is much more real this time around. The girls are cherishing every moment together, and we can see just how much it means to them. I still believe the girls are in contact with Camila and I’ll explain why. Camila was the “it” girl since day one. She’s been coached and granted special permissions by the label. I do believe this was out of her control. When I say this, I mean she was potentially forced out of the group. Yes, she was unhappy for months prior to her departure, but we could tell that wasn’t anything to do personally with the girls. It was as a result of mistreatment and injustice from the label, the same mistreatment that the 5H girls speak so openly about. I do genuinely believe that when they speak of this, they are including her within. None of the girls, including Camila, will be fully free from the label until their contracts run out. There’s not a chance Camila would have resigned with EPIC as a solo artist if there wasn’t some sort of clause in her original Fifth Harmony contract. The girls would jump to another label if they could, and they’d do it quicker than they could deny camren. Until those initial contracts are up, they remain puppets to the label. And when we talk about contracts, we don’t just mean to be in a group, turn up for every show etc.. We mean a label that controls their whole life in the mainstream media. Everything is monitored, there given a scripted narrative to follow to prevent fans harassing the label. Those statements released on December 19th were BULLSHIT. Management attempted to replicate the girls writing styles and ways of speech to sell the split to fans. What changed from Dinah’s post to Camila on December 14th “don’t matter what they say, don’t matter what you do. I’m so proud of you. I mean it. I love u” to “we begun to formulate a plan and constructive path for Fifth Harmony”. That’s management speaking and you’re ignorant if you can’t tell that. The only ones that “formulate” things are the label and the big dicks at the top. 6 days between Dinah’s post and the statement released. 6 days. Do people genuinely believe that in the space of 6 days, things could change THAT drastically between the girls to the point where we are at now? Prior to this, the girls are comfortable, happy and their interactions are genuine. So how did they go from knowing about C’s departure in November, to stopping any public interaction with her the day she left? Read the statement, then read it again. It’s not the girl’s words, and we know that. This isn’t the way they’d have written nor announced it. The words are insulting, manufactured and are fabricated lies. We’ve all got to continue routing for them. Remember, everything that happens is completely out of their control. Let’s keep buying, keep voting and keep sending love to all 5 of our girls.

Writer/Producer Tyler Johnson on Working with Harry Styles

Harry’s album was so bold, and he asserts his personality on it so much, but that seems on paper to be one of those steep mountains to climb. What was it like going into those sessions with so much expectation…

The first day was just myself and [fellow producer] Alex Salibian, who worked with me on the album underneath Jeff Bhasker. It was like a normal day for us – show him some starts and musical ideas and write over them. I could tell he thought that we were really talented, and was intrigued, but wasn’t like, “This is the answer to my question of what I’m going to do next.”

Then we brought in our engineer at the time’s bandmate [Mitch Rowland] – who we’d seen live and knew played guitar and drums, and were really impressed by. And so I made a note to file it away, “Don’t forget this kid.” He plays a kind of ‘70s rock guitar really well, and plays drums phenomenally and writes songs. So I brought it up to Bhasker and Alex and he came in on the next day… and he sits down and Harry says, “Yes, great, start writing a song.” And then he sits behind the drums and Harry says, “Wait, you can drum too?”

Those are things you can’t predict, you can’t write, you can’t plan for. Once that happened we said, “Okay, Mitch is going to help write and drum and play guitar on all these songs, and Ryan’s going to engineer it, and we’re going to be like a band writing an album.”

That serendipity of a note on your phone that you’re able to put together with this need… that feels like the definition of a great producer or arranger who can take those disparate things and find the connections…

Well, yeah, Mitch is in the touring band and plays guitar and he sounds phenomenal live. It was the start of something bigger than what it was. It wasn’t just connecting the dots and then moving on to the next project. It was the creation of a team. It was very fun to see it come together. We were able in the first few days to write a ton of songs and finish them, and every single song was a team effort.

A funny story that’s been told is that it was a Tuesday or a Wednesday, and we’d gotten a lot done, and on Thursday Mitch couldn’t come in because he had to work at his other job at a pizza shop. And I think for Harry, that really resonated in a way, like, “This is what I needed, for not everything to be perfect and thought out and precise.” It’s odd to have this guy who is really the answer to my questions to be a part-time pizza shop guy. I think that hit Harry correctly that this is going to work out, and to see how quickly he was like, “Well, you might not need to do that anymore…"
