this looks like one of sokkas drawings

You know, I feel like A:tLA really found a way to resonate with the struggles that a lot of kids face.

Aang is the struggle of the “gifted child”. He’s told from a young age that he’s going to do incredible things that puts him under a lot of pressure until he finally pulls off the ultimate procrastination trying to avoid the stress. He shows a lot of talent in what he’s good at, but when he tries learning something he’s not immediately good at he is easily discouraged. He’s also almost paralyzed by the fear of failing. (To be fair, the stakes are very high in his case).

Katara is the child with all of the talent she could ever need, but none of the opportunity. She has a real natural talent for waterbending, but no place at home where she can get training to develop the talent. It reminds me of kids from my school who were extremely talented in theatre, but couldn’t afford to participate after they instated the $200 “pay to participate” rules on extracurriculars.

Toph is the child with plenty of talent, but physical limitations that she has to go beyond. She has to prove that she is twice as good to get the same respect (and boy does she ever)! And she has to balance making sure that no one treats her disability as her defining characteristic, while still making sure it’s accounted for. Her parents would have let her blindness rule her life and she had to fight just to get the chance to show her talents.

Sokka is like the kid with lots of talent, but in an area that’s not very valued. At least not when compared to the benders. Like the kid who draws incredible comics in their notebooks, but is looked down on because they just can’t get an A on their report cards. Or the kid who is a talented pianist that everyone asks about getting prepared for a “real career” while the kids on the football team are being told to watch for recruiters.

That’s just the Gaang, but you could keep doing this with so many characters (I mean, everything about Zuko!), but I’m just really grateful that even in this fantastic setting there were a lot of things people could identify with.

1, 11 and 12 for artist ask

12. Draw one of your favori1. What is your favourite colour to work with?

I work with pinks and purples a lot. Especially pink. Like it just goes with everything haha. If you ever look at a picture and go “hmmm this needs something”, I’ll always be yelling in the distance “throw some fucking pink in there!”

11. Warm or cool colours.

Cool colours. All the way. Whenever I try to do “warm afternoon lighting” it usually comes out as “nuclear waste site just exploded somewhere”.

Fuck orange basically.

12. Draw one of your favourite characters in 15 seconds

Sokka is so easy for me at this point.

Thanks for the ask!

I was going to post the last part (Part V) of That Night (Tokka fancomic) tonight but when I searched my hard drive I couldn’t find the finished pages. All I saw were pages in flat colors and without letters.
I’m not sure if I thought I’ve finished polishing those pages and lettered them together with Part 4 but I really couldn’t find the files so I assumed I probably haven’t actually finalized and lettered them yet…. OR they could probably be in my other drive. I’m not sure… it has been so long and I have been quite occupied with work that I couldn’t remember anymore. LOL! Sorry.

Anyway, if I couldn’t find the files, then I have no choice but to finalized the colors of the pages and lettered them again since I still got the ones in flat colors.

I’m really sorry about it… so let me make it up a little to you guys by posting this quick drawing of Toph and Sokka. I imagine them looking like this in “CHOICES” by @3holmes (it was the fanfic story set years after THAT NIGHT happened).

(Although my drawing style here seems a bit different here from That Night fancomic.)

Anyway, I apologize for making you guys wait a little more and thank you very much again for keep waiting. I will try my best to post Part 5 before this month ended.

In your Opposite Elements AU, would Katara and Sokka be Fire Nation royalty, since in A:tLA, they're the children of a Water Tribe chief? And have you considered making Hinata's hair golden to represent the sun, instead of white? I absolutely love this AU and your ideas. You've really brought something special to the fandom, so thank you for creating it :)

Sokka and Katara are from a noble family, but the Fire Lord is Arnook and Hinata is his heir. Katara met Hinata in the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, and the two became best friends (I really want to put more emphasis on female friendships in this AU, with Katara-Hinata and Toph-Suki); they often played together outside of school, and Sokka met Hinata on one of these playdates.

Since Hinata is more of a warrior princess in this AU, I imagine that she and Sokka spar often (while Katara is receiving fire bending instruction from Master Hama). Hinata’s hair color is actually very light orange (like Jasper from SU), and I tried gold but I didn’t think it looked as good.

Aww, thank you! I’m glad you’re enjoying this AU just as much as I’m having fun drawing it.
