Heya! What are some goals you have as a writer? (Ex. Write 2000 words a day. Read 100 pages of a book and analyze it.)
It’s very flexible, and depends a lot on what I’m working on at the moment.
Currently, my biggest goal as a writer is that I’d like to get my most recently completed manuscript published within the next year. I’m not going to disclose where I am in the query process at the moment, but I will say that I feel that will happen soon.
For my current manuscript, I’m currently trying to complete a chapter per day. Note that the chapters for this book are significantly shorter than my last manuscript, otherwise that wouldn’t be feasible.
When I was more new to the craft, I used to find it helpful to set a daily word count (which is why I still recommend it to newbies), but now that I’m a bit more adept I find that sucks the joy out of it somewhat.
The same goes for reading for pleasure: a year or two ago, when I was just getting back into reading, I would make myself read a chapter per day. Now that I’ve gotten back in the habit of it, I sit down and read whenever I feel like it (which is usually at least two chapters every evening, or more on weekends.)
Basically, when I was more of a newbie, I had to cater to a reading and writing schedule. Now that I’m more experienced, I find my schedule caters to me.
I’m not saying this will necessarily be what happens with you, or anyone, really: if there’s one thing I’ve learned as a writer, its that everyone’s different.
I hope this helps, and happy writing. <3
