this is when dean returns from vietnam

Welcome to the 8th edition of my Recommendation list for Cas!girls.

Check my Masterlist

Hello, fellow trashcans. It’s been a while since I updated my rec list. I’ve been catching up with my reading and since today’s the Supernatural Day, I decided to post to celebrate it! Now, please, get comfy because this one is a little longer than usual.

Note: The summary of the fics are in italics. Some of them are written by their authors, and some others are written/modified by me. All the series start on chapter one, except if they have their own masterpage. The text written after this “–” hyphen are just my lame ass comments.
If for any reason you want your username and/or fic to be removed from this list or you wish not to be tagged, just hit me a message and I’ll erase it/untag/stop tagging you. So yeah, let’s get started:

One shots

  • Office hours by @theinsandoutsofcastiel. You are professor!Castiel’s TA. –Unnnnggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!
  • Based on you viewing history by @sp-oops. Takes place during 11x04. When remnants of Rowena’s curse keep you from going to Oregon with Dean and Sam, you don’t mind that much. Cas is recovering, too. He’s happy to binge-watch Netflix with you. And happy to sit closer. And closer. It’s up to you to close the distance. –I’ve been looking for this one for ages! I love it, I love the slow build up, I love the sexy smut, the fluff and dorky Dean teasing the reader. Must read.
  • For the first time by @splendidcas. You lose your virginity to Cas. –This is so fluffy and sexy and perfect.
  • Sun is shining bright by @curliesallovertheplace. You go out to sunbath, Cas happens. –Yaaasss!
  • As seen on TV by @winchester-with-wings.  After an especially rough hunt, you just want to want to sleep off the pain but Castiel has a different idea on how to make you feel better. –Now I desperately have the need to be attacked by a monster so he’ll take care of me. (It seems like tumblr won’t let me tag ‘em but go and show ‘em your love<3)
  • Confessions at dawn by @bkwrm523. After a bad dream you’re starting to have a panic attack, cas helps you to calm down.

  • Good angles & Good angles part 2 by @divinitycas. (Smut) Misha x reader AU. Backstage shenanigans at VegasCon lead to an unexpected (but not unwelcome) break from the action–or is it? –I’m already in the trashcan, so why not go deeper?

  • Twist and shout by Hannah & Hawke. What begins as a transforming love between Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak in the summer of 1965 quickly derails into something far more tumultuous when Dean is drafted in the Vietnam War. Though the two both voice their relationship is one where saying goodbye is never a real truth, their story becomes fraught with the tragedy of circumstance. In an era where homosexuality was especially vulnerable, Twist and Shout is the story of the love transcending time, returning over and over in its many forms, as faithful as the sea. –I think it’s well known this is a classic. When I started reading it, I already had an idea of what I was going to face since I spoiled myself the ending, thanks, but what I knew was just the tip of the iceberg. It’s so beautiful, smutty and painful. I needed some time to recover from this, but IT’S TOTALLY WORTH IT! If you haven’t read it, come join me in my sea of tears, you won’t regret it.

That’s all for the reading material, folks! Now, allow me to introduce you to my collective Castiel playlist, so go and listen to it, submit your songs for me to add them to the list, share it with our fellow Cas entusiast and more importantly, get inspired!

If you want to be tagged from now on, send me a message, so I can make a Cas trash list to add here next times.

Reblog it, like it, send it to your friends, your teachers and your grandma, so we can all inhabit the same trashcan, and more importantly, send your love to the authors aaaaaand enjoy!

Hey y'all! I’ve been really itching to do a lil’ fic rec for you guys so let’s see how this goes! Note that this is no particularly order. Hope you guys like it!

1. Twist and Shout by gabriel, standbyme: What begins as a transforming love between Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak in the summer of 1965 quickly derails into something far more tumultuous when Dean is drafted in the Vietnam War.

2. Blackbird Fly by artsyUnderstudy: Nearly a year after starting the fire that claimed the lives of Ruby Darvelle and Anna Novak, fifteen year old Sam Winchester returns home from his stint in court ordered rehab. Sam and his older brother, Dean, struggle to remake their own complicated relationship and the home they’ve lost in the wake of this tragedy, while a chance meeting brings Anna’s brother, the troubled and secretive Castiel, into their lives. Fighting with his recovery, Sam finds himself drawn to the strong and lively Jess, while Castiel and Dean find comfort in one another. As consequences of their past emerge and threaten to tear apart what they’ve carefully rebuilt, they are all forced to reevaluate who their family really is, and to what lengths they’re willing to go to keep it safe.

3. All Things Shining by Askance, standbyme: Something in the world is waking up.

It isn’t long before it’s brought to the attention of the Winchesters and Castiel: miracles are spreading across the country, the paranormal seems to be shrinking back on itself—and it all has something to do with the missing prayer book of a traveling preacher who died over a century ago.

Dean is convinced it’s all the lead-up to another Apocalypse; Sam and Castiel aren’t so sure. Regardless, it sends them out on a less-than-typical road-trip, following the Mississippi and remnants of a very old story that seems increasingly to call to them. And along the way the trio learn much more about themselves—and the consequences and origins of love—than they’d ever have anticipated..

4. The Inexhaustible Silence of Houses by Askance: Almost two years after the world doesn’t end, Castiel falls from grace—and loses his voice in the process. It is the impetus for confession and change; before long, he is settling into a loving relationship with Dean, the Winchesters are tired, and hunting for a place to land has taken precedence to hunting anything else. Dean and Castiel fall in love with the strange little house on the end of Swallowtail Drive, and for a little while life is as it should be—sweet, affectionate, and beginning afresh.

But more and more Castiel sees and hears things in the house that beg the question of whether or not a place itself can be alive. The walls and rooms seem to shift and grow and breathe, and one night, Dean comes home from a hunt changed in a way that Castiel cannot explain. In the months that follow, their domestic bliss takes turns for the dark and sour, and the confusion of their circumstances will ultimately test everything Castiel knows about the man he loves, and everything he believes to be true.

5. Jump the Track by alysian_fields: High school AU. It’s Dean’s senior year at Lawrence High, and he’s already given up on himself. It takes the arrival of the strange, intense, awkward Castiel Delacroix at the school to prove to Dean that maybe his life is worth saving after all.

6. Thunder and Angels by  pm_lo:  Castiel’s family owns the shoddily-regulated coal mine where John Winchester works, so Dean storms Cas’s mansion, demanding answers from the drugged-out trust-fund kid. In exchange for his help repairing the mine, Cas demands Dean live with him for three months and give Cas a shot at seducing him by allowing him one kiss a day.

7. Smoke in the Mirror by letters_of_stars: It begins with the flier hung in the library: art model needed for thesis project, will pay. Castiel figures it’s an easy way to make some extra money, but modeling for Dean Winchester ends up complicating his life far beyond anything he could have imagined.

8. Little Motels by Lovely_Phrase: After John’s death, Dean must travel to California to find his estranged brother and deliver the bad news. He takes Castiel with him, despite the newness of their relationship, and finds himself falling in love while staying in a series of little motels. What he discovers after arriving at Stanford is enough to destroy what’s left of him, but Dean isn’t willing to give up what they have together that easily.

9. Après by imogenbynight: When the angels stop falling and Castiel makes his way out of the trees, he finds himself alone and oceans away from the Winchesters. For once, Dean flies to him.

10.  A Room of One’s Own by NorthernSparrow:  All Dean wants is a little privacy. Cas doesn’t understand.

11. Perditus by mkhunterz:  When Cas wakes up in the forest, human, he doesn’t know where to turn. Powerless, he is thrust into a world full of darkness and danger and thousands of fallen angels out for his blood. Struggling with his new emotions and having now only his own human strength and cunning to protect him, Cas finds himself pitted against human, monster and angel alike in his struggle to cross the world and find his way back home, to a family that may have already forsaken him. Lost and alone, battling against insurmountable odds, Castiel may finally learn the true meaning of ‘Fallen.‘

12. Sweaters and Cigarettes by lemonclefox: Dean Winchester is in high school, crushing hard on Castiel Novak, the unbelievably hot goth who Dean does his very best to convince himself he hates, despite the fact that he can’t really stop staring at him.

Dean tries, but when the two of them finally cross paths, their first conversation takes a surprising turn. And suddenly, they both find themselves falling harder and faster than they ever could have expected.

13. Do What Feels Good by Catchclaw, cymbalism: Castiel learns to love alone time in the shower. And then he learns to share.

14. The Story of You and Me by the_diggler:  Dean wakes up in bed next to a very human Castiel, and a journal in his own handwriting that tells him it’s two years in the future. The house looks a lot like Bobby’s, and Sam lives there too… He just can’t remember how they got from angels falling in the sky – to comfortable domesticity.

While there is much in the journal Dean doesn’t remember, there is much of their story he’s always known. And as he settles into the routine of his new life and relationship with Castiel, it quickly becomes something he doesn’t know how to live without.

15. Chasing Cars by ratherbehere: After an awkward accidental encounter at a local strip club, Castiel discovers his college roommate, Dean, has a secret career as a stripper, and their relationship begins to change and a bond begins to form. They face the joys and challenges of life together and discover along the way how deeply they’ve come to care for each other.

The neon sign for Tommy’s Girls was harsh in Sam’s eyes after burying the siren’s body in the dark of night. Dean was anxious to return though, and tell Tommy that his strip club was safe once again. Why was Dean anxious, though? The balding and shady owner had offered free services from the girls if they fixed the issues that kept the cops from sniffing around his place. A beer and some sleep were all that Sam wanted as his aching back held his large frame upright as he followed his elder brother back into the club.

Loud music assaulted the younger Winchester’s ears as the duo pushed their way to the back corner where Tommy had told them to return to. Sure enough, the short man sat with a few of “his coochie girls”. Swaggering with bravado, Dean pulled Tommy away and inconspicuously presented him the proof that the monster was dead. The owner eagerly and almost greedily nodded his head, causing Sam to sigh. Yes, women were a wonderful thing, and to have one to tangle up with in sheets was spectacular, but random hookups weren’t the Sam Winchester way. That was all his brother, or his soulless self, but he usually chose to not enter that part of his mind.

Sam found himself snapped out of his reverie by a hand pushing him by the shoulder. One of the bouncers was leading him and Dean into the main area where there were girls twirling on brass poles under colorful lights, and others cuddling up with men holding money on the floor. They passed thought the main area and down a narrow and duskily lit hallway. Dean was nudged through one doorway with a cheeky grin on his face, knowing what he was in store for. Sam sighed  exhaustedly on the outside while his mind and hormones took in the fact that he was about to touch a near naked woman, evident with a growing snugness in the crotch of  his jeans. Sitting on a questionably stained couch, the tall and shaggy haired hunter awaited something he would in all honesty enjoy.

You had just walked backstage from your turn taking a whirl up on the pole when you came face to face with your boss.

“Sugar, I have a task for you. Give room 2B the best damn dance that little ass can give.” You sighed inwardly and nodded. You really hated giving lap dances, but it was part of your job. Handsy men were not up your alley, but you needed the money that came from the job to support yourself and your recently discharged and newly invalid  brother since he and his convoy met a mine in Iraq.

“Yes, Tommy” You replied, moving to primp yourself again in the mirror, and feeling the balding pimp’s hand make contact with your bottom as he left. An annoyed noise escaped your lips as you slid some gloss on them before making your way to the VIP rooms.

When you came up to the plaque marking the doorway of your customer, you took a deep breath, steeling yourself for another grimy man with wandering hands and uncomfortable intentions. You were just a doll to them, a moving toy to enthrall their sexual urges and be cast away when sated. With a more grounded feeling, you drew up a more innocent look, the one all the girls said made the men say good things about you, and stepped into the doorway.

The man on the couch was definitely not like your usual people. He was tall with a puppy face that looked hardened by tough experiences. Hazel eyes were drinking your sparsely covered body as you took in his broad and muscular shoulders, long hair, and rugged outfit of plaids, denim, and heavy boots.

“Hello.” Hazel eyes said huskily. He rose from his seat and held out a hand, clearing his throat.  "I’m Sam.“ This threw you for a loop and you looked at him with total confusion. Men usually weren’t courteous when getting off on your appearance and dancing. "You are?”

“I- ah- I’m Y/N.” You stuttered, and shook his hand. An awkward silence enveloped you both and you broke it, blushing and breaking eye contact with this Sam guy by looking at your feet. “So you wanted a dance?” You asked. He brought his hand gently under you chin and guided your eyes back up to his. Sam smiled and shrugged.

“If you want to give one. Your boss and my brothers’ idea, I’m just along for the ride. We can just talk if you want, Y/N.” You smiled back at him. He gestured to the sofa and you two entered the room, him sitting and you straddling his lap.

“It’s my job, and if the bouncers see me slacking, Tommy will hear and I kinda badly need the job.” you explained,“  Anyhow, why does Tommy say you get a dance?” You asked him. Sam sighed let out a soft chuckle.

“My brother and I are consultants of sorts and we helped him end the disappearances of a few of your regular customers. My brother drove a hard bargain for helping him, though.” He had a fond annoyance in his voice as he mentioned his brother. “Why are you here?” Sam inquired of you, a fresh blush dusting his cheeks as you danced and the two of you chatted.

Dad’s long gone, mom’s dead, and my brother needs to still go through rehabilitation that his pension and benefits will not pay for. I’m the only breadwinner and this job pays very well for what it is, so here I am.“ Sam’s head cocked.

"You have a brother? What happened?” He grunted then as you ground you hips into his and he blushed, looking to you for the answer of his question.

“Yes, he was a marine. Staff Sargent Y/B/N Y/L/N. He was honorably discharged after losing his right leg when his convoy met an IED during a tour in Iraq. Y/B/N hates pity, though, he’s proud of what he did, and I’m proud of him.” You say, looking away as you run your hands from Sam’s shoulders, down his chest.

“Wow.” Sam murmurs. His hands meet yours at his waist and he squeezes them. You blush and then his hands are on your hips. You take it as a sign to kick it up a notch a move to, but are stopped as he gently pushes you off him and onto the couch. “I- I can’t let you do that, Y/N. It’s not right.” He says when you open your mouth to protest and question. You smile appreciatively at him and turn to better talk to him as he closes the curtain at the door to shield your conversation from they eyes around you. “Anyways, wow about your brother.” Sam lightly stated, returning to his seat on the couch. “My dad was a Corporal, got pretty well decorated in Vietnam.”

“Impressive. Did he get drafted or enlist?”

“I think it was enlistment at 17.” Sam was grinning at you, and you were grinning right back.

“Did you or your brother serve?” You ask.

“Us? No. Our dad did raise Dean and I like soldiers, though. After our mom died he was pretty strict. He hated it when I wanted to go to Stanford instead of being in the family business.” Sam now had a slightly distant look in his eyes.

“You went to Stanford? What were you studying?” Your mind went back to your degree, collecting dust on the wall of your shabby apartment.

“I was pre-law, left to help my brother find our dad on a hunting trip gone awry right before trying to get a full ride into law school.” You gave Sam a sympathetic look. “I could say I want that life, but I enjoy what I do. Traveling cross country with my brother and helping people is worth it.” He smiled and it made you happy to see his smile. “Did you study anything?’

"Oh, I uh, I actually have a degree in Y/Ma and Y/Mi.” You meekly admitted. Sam gave you a look of utter disbelief.

“Then what are you doing here?” Sam half yelled, throwing his hands in the air, “and doing this when you deserve and can do so much more!” He added, gesturing at you before lounging again on the couch.

“Economy tanked and it’s been tough to find a job. I took what I could, and it’s been getting Y/B/N and I by,”  You shrugged and sighed. Sam looked at you with empathy.

“I wish I knew some way to help.” He gently mused. You smiled and patted his shoulder.

“No pity. It’s a job. I get to have a roof over my head from it.” You said, surprising yourself with this positive outlook.

“You deserve better than being someone’s object, Y/N.” Sam emphasized. You nodded and smiled. Sam’s face crinkled with concern and he wiped a tear from your cheek. You hadn’t even noticed that you had begun to cry.

“Y/N, What’s wrong, sweetheart?” He asked.

“You are the kindest, Sam. I have never met someone here that has made me feel like a somebody. I feel like a person, thanks to you. Thank-Thank you.” You somewhat gushed, and then kissed him on the cheek. He blushed and put his hands on your shoulders.

“You are a person. You are a beautiful and smart woman, and deserve to be treated like such.” Sam told you, in his gentle tenor, his hazel eyes looking directly into yours. You nodded and wiped dry your eyes.

You had acted then on impulse, closing the distance and brushing your lips to his. He reacted almost immediately and you two shared a sweet kiss. Both of you broke apart with a blush, and with one look you and Sam were kissing again. Then there was a sudden knock from outside the room.

“Hey, Sammy! You in there?” A voice called. Sam groaned and you two broke apart enough for him to turn to the doorway. “They’re closing down, you’ve been in there for hours.” A figure’s silhouette shone through the curtain before a dirty blonde’s head poked in with brilliant green eyes and a shit-eating grin. “Hello there!” The man drawled at you.

“Y/N, this is my brother Dean. Dean this is Y/N.” Sam said, wiping his face with his hand, and brushing his hair away from his face.

“Nice to meet you, Sweetheart.” Dean said warmly before looking at his brother. “We’ve got to hit the road, Garth called with another case in Texas.” Sam groaned and nodded.

“I’ll meet you out by the car in five.” Sam said evenly.

“Sure. Just don’t do anything I would in the meantime.” Dean said cheekily before vanishing into the hall.

“I’m sorry about him.” Sam said as he stood up and helped you do the same. You waved you hand and smiled.

“It’s okay. Sounds like you have quite a drive.” Sam nodded.

“All part of the job.” He mumbled.

“Can I see your phone for a second?” you had randomly asked as you two walked down the hall.

“Yeah, here.” He said, handing you the now unlocked device. You quickly added your number and name into his contacts before returning the phone.

“If you ever find yourself in town again, feel free to give me a call, or any time really. You say, almost murmuring the last bit. Sam smiled.

"I’d like that.” He said. “It was nice talking to you, Y/N.” You nodded.

“Hey Sam?”

“Thank you. Thank you for reminding me that I’m a person.” You said, moving to kiss him on the cheek as you two stood at the open back door.

“You’re more than welcome. Don’t forget it, beautiful.” He smiled at you before looking out the door at the headlights shining in. “Take care, Y/N.” He said, and walked towards the waiting car. Sam gave you one more backwards glance and a tiny wave. Then, he was gone, leaving you, a smiling person in his place.

“Carry On My Wayward Son…” - On the Importance of Mary Winchester During Carver Era (with a Sidedish of Spec on the Season Finale)

“Our names are Dean and Sam Winchester. We’re named after your parents. When I would get sick, you would make me tomato-rice soup, because that’s what your mom made you. And instead of a lullaby, you would sing “Hey Jude”, ‘cause that’s your favorite Beatles song.”

5x13 “The Song Remains the Same”

Dean and his relationship to his mother has imo always been one of the most beautiful things about the show, therefore I loved how often during the Carver Era attention was drawn to Mary and especially in relation to Dean. After having seen the spoilery set pics and having read this post about Mary Winchester being listed on the season finale’s character sheet, I just had to make this set and write something down, because while this spoiler may turn out being false, I personlly would not be surprised if Mary Winchester was to make an appearance as imo she has been tied to Dean’s coming of age arc and hero’s journey quite heavily as the past seasons have shown.

I have been writing in the beginning of the season about the importance of mother figures and with that Mary Winchester here and also had posted a S10 scenario focusing on Mary Winchester’s love to be what would save Dean and bring him back since I thought that would have made sense for the show to do and well… We kind of got it in 10x03 “Soul Survivor” and 10x23 “Brother’s Keeper”, but I think the true pay off for such a scenario may happen this season finale in S11.

So let’s take a look back at all the little and big nods and shoutouts to Mary Winchester over the past three seasons (the ones above are actually just 12 instances, I had to narrow down to these from more than 20 instances) and what her emphasis may mean and in the end offer some theories on how she may factor in on the finale and why that may have everything to do with Dean.
