OK, so I watched the episode again when it hit me. Even though the glow of when “Castiel” arrived was orange implying that he came from the portal I think that’s what they want you to think. You’re probably wondering why I put Castiel in quotations. Simple answer:
That’s not our Castiel.
Take a look at this gif:
Castiel’s face seems determined but at the same time, he’s not responding to either Dean or Sam’s plea to stop.
Almost as if he doesn’t know who they are.
Why would Castiel not follow through with the plan when he knew Lucifer was meant to be trapped on the other side?
Because it’s not him.
The one that tried to kill Lucifer and then that was essentially murdered was the other world’s version of Cas. That explains why when he went through the portal at the end he seemed a little confused because he had no idea what was going on.
That world’s Castiel sensed something was wrong and decided to check out the situation. (That’s why there was a flash, it was him coming down from heaven). Tried to kill Lucifer, which failed because he didn’t know it wouldn’t work and then followed Sam and Dean to figure out why there was a sudden portal in his world.
You and Sam looked around the hallway you were standing in; there was nothing special about it. Just a hallway of what appeared to be an empty factory. Glancing over at Sam, you nodded at each other, silently communicating that you should move.
The two of you were looking for Dean who had been taken by the djinn who fed off of fear. Sam had killed it a day ago but Dean never woke up, which led to where you are now; walking in Dean’s nightmare, trying to find him so that he could wake himself up.
You had just turned the corner when you heard a voice chuckling from what sounded below you. Sam heard it too because he glanced at you before walking to the railing to view what was going on below you.
Your eyes widened as you took in the scene; the dream’s version of you and Sam were each tied to a chair while Dean stood five feet in front of you. A man, a demon with black eyes showing, stood off to the side a few feet away.
“The hell?” You heard Sam say next to you.
“What is going-” You began but stopped when you heard the demon begin to speak.
“Alright Dean, choose. Do you want to save your brother, the one you raised and spent your entire life looking after.” The demon paused, “Or your little half sister who you didn’t even know about until the apocalypse? Your choice.” He said while handing Dean a gun, “You better choose quickly, otherwise I might just kill them both.”
This in 12x16 felt like another solid character moment, to me; not just the fact that Dean left, but that Sam stayed. I think it’s the same difference in attitude that prompts Dean to squash down and deny the things that worry him (or, the flipside of the same coin, to accept them with fatalistic helplessness) whereas Sam will stare steely-eyed and insistent into the face of his problems. (Of course, that can certainly be problematic too.)
dean walks into the lakehouse’s bathroom. cas is there in the shower, perfectly fine but confused why dean is so shocked. dean joins him.
elsewhere, rowena is on a beach watching a gorgeous sunrise. the fiery rays of the sun in the sky do no justice to the lovely tones of her hair. she smiles at how easily fooled lucifer is. you’d think he’d have learned after last time, huh?
sam has decided to take a break from searching for jack. we see him wake up the next day with eileen in a hotel room and sneak out to get her breakfast in bed.
amara is raging. ‘really! so right after dean learns the lesson he needs, his mother flings herself into another dimension?! right when they’re to piece things together?!’ god is amused. amara decides she’s not too pleased about that and fwpps mary right back home.
dean and cas are still in the shower and showing no signs of going anywhere for now.
sam returns to the hotel room and is puzzled to see eileen gone. he turns at a sound in the hall and sees her approaching with a bag of bagels and coffee. they grin at their simultaneous breakfast in bed plans.
rowena grows her coven. everything she does, she does with grace and while looking fantastic. she doesn’t have to say a word to be dripping with sass.
god is mildly annoyed at amara’s ease of manipulating reality and decides to play along as well. he waves his hand and crowley is back for the sole reason he can choose his own relevant, non-pointless/meandering storyline.
dean has decided he loves this shower almost as much as he loves cas.
lucifer is cursing the whole “ever want to get out of the cage” idea because shit, this alternate universe sucks.
amara isn’t to be outdone. she brings back charlie.
rowena’s hair wins an emmy all on its own.
after breakfast, sam asks if eileen if she feels like going on a hunt. he’s been wanting to chase down these things called bu– “bucklemmings? yeah, I ran over a couple on my way to pick up the bagels,” she says with a casual sip of her coffee. “won’t be bothering anybody else again.” they high-five.
god resurrects benny. after he and amara bring back gabriel at the same time, they declare a truce.
dean and cas only get out of the shower in time to test out some newly-purchased bedsheets.
How is Sam handling all the deaths at the end of last season? (to Jared)
‘It’s a funny role reversal. Where Sam is usually the one who wants to talk it out or vocalise it - I think because Sam is so overwhelmed with Jack and what Jack might mean, cause Sam thinks that Dean is kinda resigned on Jack. That ‘Jack’s evil, Jack’s gonna’ be evil, it’s only a matter of time before I have to put a bullet in him’, whereas Sam sees a lot of himself in Jack. Because Sam was meant to do evil things as well. He had demon blood in him. Sam might wonder a little bit if that’s the way that Dean thinks about him still.
Sam hasn’t really dealt with Mom, Cas, Crowley, Rowena. Sam is like ‘we gotta’ figure out what we’re gonna’ do with Jack’ and Dean’s like ‘no we don’t, we gotta’ figure out Mom, Cas, etc’ and he’s pushing his feelings down a little bit’.’
Sounds like Sam is he optimist this season. (to Jared)
‘He’s hiding some things in his optimism but he’s also not dealing with some things he needs to deal with.’
Where do we catch up with the brothers in Season 13? (to Jensen)
‘Literally where we left off, with Cas at Dean’s feet. Mom is gone, Crowley killed himself, Cas is now lying dead, Kelly’s gone. There’s too much for Dean to process at the moment it picks up, so he does what he knows how to do best and neutralises it all. He’s just going to do what he knows and hit something hard. Sam is going to talk sense into him.’
Misha talking about Cas in Season 13
‘The most relevant aspect of Cas’ death is how the boys process Cas’ death. Ultimately as the season plays out, Cas’ death is going to be less important to him, because he was just dead, but Sam and Dean go through the whole grieving process and have to process the loss of their friend.
When Cas comes back, we find him in a realm that has been talked about on the show but never seen. He finds himself alone in this realm apart from a companion who is another powerful being.’
Jensen is not directing so that he can spend time with his kids.
Scoody-Doo episode is live action at the beginning to get them into that world, but the majority of the episode is animated.
Jared talking about Sam in S13, after he stepped up to more of a leadership role at the end of S12. I just really like this perspective on what I think has been a trait of later-seasons Sam, a tendency to defer and step back and let Dean lead from the front (SDCC 2017)
A/N: Not that anyone cares I’ve been hella busy and haven’t had time to literally write anything and I still really don’t, but I’m going to anyways bc I have some inspiration. Enjoy. Feedback is always appreciated(:

You loved your brothers more than anything in the world. I mean, you were practically raised by them. John was never around, your mom was just some quick fuck that John had on a hunt. As soon as demons got word that John Winchester knocked up some chick and he had another child, they came and killed your mother when you were only a few months old. Thankfully, your mom got John on the phone as they were trying to get in and he was in town so he saved you. Not your mom though. Dean had been 16 at the time, Sam was 12. You were by far the baby of the family and Sam and Dean made it their mission to protect you from everything. And when I say everything, I mean literally everything. You were never even supposed to have been born. But nevertheless, here you were seventeen years later, alive and kicking, living in the bunker with Sam and Dean, the two best brothers in the entire world.
