this is the only time i'm ever letting other people use my art

PSA: If you're looking to buy prints, posters, or merch and come across a site called TeeChip DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM, EVER

They steal artwork from artists without their permission and attempt to resell low quality crap of it, and trick people into buying it by stating “BEST SELLER, NOT AVAILABLE IN STORES, LIMITED TIME ONLY”

And hey, guess what? Someone messaged me earlier and I found out that this “company” is selling MY ART that I definitely did not give permission to use, sell, or distribute.

This “company” literally edited out my work from the original images, rotated a few, and slapped them all onto a poster.

Uh, NO. Not cool at all.

I have already filed a DMCA and hope to have it taken down within a day, but who knows if they’ll even do that seeing as their “DMCA form” is literally an email to “someone who takes care of these matters” 🙃

PLEASE don’t support shitty “companies” like TeeChip who steal the hard work of others! If you ever recognize artwork that you suspect is stolen on any site that sells artwork or merch, please let the original artist know if you’re able to! It’s always greatly appreciated when people let us know this kind of shit is happening and we can take actions to stop it

The Tiny Anthropologist's Advice for College:
  • 8 AM classes really aren't that bad: It may take some willpower (and coffee) to get there, but really, 8AMs aren't that bad. Get a decent amount of sleep the night before and you will be okay. If I can get myself and my 4 year old out of bed, get ready, drop her off at preschool and arrive on time for an 8am, you can too!
  • Taking classes that meet once a week for long blocks: If your learning style is such that sitting in a long lecture once a week is something you can handle, then these are the best classes to take. Personally, I have done 3 semesters of these and they have been my favorite and the ones I have gotten the best grades in.
  • Scheduling back-to-back class periods: These can be beneficial if you're the type of person that just likes to get everything out of the way at once. However, the downside is that you will not have time to eat between classes, and you may have to grab something and eat during lecture. If the buildings for your classes are far apart, this may not even be an option. Having breaks between classes is important to allow yourself mental relaxation and to eat, or catch up on work.
  • Don't be afraid to change your major: I've changed my major a lot, like maybe 8-10 times. The downside is that I am graduating a year late, but I took A LOT of fascinating classes and became a much better rounded student. Colleges know that student change their minds. If you switch majors 2-3 times, you won't end up behind. I'm a special case.
  • Take long-hand notes: You may feel strange taking long-hand notes while everyone else is typing away at their MacBooks, but long-hand notes are MUCH more beneficial as far as long-term memory goes, and you don't run the risk of being distracted by Facebook.
  • Dress appropriately for class: The college stereotype of everyone attending class in their pajamas isn't true. At least make the effort to throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Your professors will notice if you look like a slacker in class, and dressing nicely (or at least not in your pajamas) shows them that you value your education and respect their lectures. People wear anything from casual clothes to ties to class, and everything inbetween. Don't be afraid you'll be overdressed, being underdressed is much worse (in my opinion).
  • Cultivate relationships with professors: ATTEND OFFICE HOURS. Close relationships with professors are massively helpful! Professors are much more willing to write letters of recommendation, look over rough drafts, or help you out via email at 10pm for students that they know than ones that they don't. Additionally, professors can be some of the most interesting people you will ever meet.
  • Attend class: Along the same lines as above, attending class is very important. You (or your parents) are paying for you to be there. You should try to get the most out of that by attending lectures that you have signed up for. Additionally, when it comes finals time and you need to boost your grade, no professor is going to help you if you haven't attended their lectures.
  • Invest in a water bottle: Nothing is worse than sitting in a lecture dying of thirst.
  • Invest in a messenger bag, tote bag, or backpack: You don't have a locker in college and chances are your dorm will be far away from your classes. Make sure you have something to carry anything you'll need, from books, to pens and pencils, to a laptop, or even snacks like granola bars.
  • Take notes: Do it. Your professor knows more than you, that's why they are at the front of the room. Listen to them, and write down what they say. Then study it. This is how you learn.
  • Utilize the library: Other than during finals week, the library is pretty much a guaranteed quiet place to study. Additionally, college libraries have databases for research papers, printing services, and a whole lot more for students.
  • Eat alone if you want/have to: No one will judge you. I promise.
  • Annotate your books: Especially if you are an English/literature major! It is a lot easier to simply take all of your notes in the novel than to copy down page numbers and quotes into a notebook. Textbooks (like science ones) can be annotated too!
  • Don't let anyone shame you about your major: Each major is difficult in its own way. Don't let anyone make you feel like you're taking an "easy" major or that they are more intelligent than you because they are in a "hard" major. STEM majors are not better than Liberal Arts majors, and Liberal Arts majors are not better than STEM majors. Ignore anyone who says otherwise. Ignore anyone who says your major is pointless. This does not only apply to fellow students, but family, friends, and the world in general.
  • Prepare for advising periods: Class offerings are usually posted before registration is open. Take an hour to become familiar with the requirements of your department and the individual college it is in (if applicable), as well as University/institutional requirements (IE at UMass, my "college" is the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, while my department is Anthropology. The university itself, SBS, and Anthro all have different specific requirements I must meet to graduate) and make a list of classes you would like to take that satisfy these requirements. Advisors will appreciate it.
  • Take advantage of campus resources: Many colleges and universities have numerous extremely helpful resources, such as employment services which will help with resumes, or counselors for when you're having a hard time. Use these. They are there for you.
  • Keep yourself organized: Notebooks, highlighters, a planner, flashcards, an expandable file, binders, folders, literally whatever you need to keep track of all your papers, assignments, due dates, and what you need to help you study is important for you to have. If you don't know what helps you study or what keeps you organized, try some different systems or do some research.
  • Keep your syllabi: Every semester I buy a different notebook for each class I am taking, and I always keep my syllabus folded in half in the back of each notebook. It has saved my ass numerous times.
  • Check your email or the course website before class: Nothing sucks more than being the only kid who didn't know class was cancelled, especially if you're a commuter and you drove in/took the bus to a class that isn't happening.
  • Give yourself plenty of time: Whether its getting to class, doing homework, or writing a paper, make sure you give yourself enough time. This is especially important for commuters. I can promise you that you will need more time to drive to class than you think. I live less than 40 minutes away from UMass and I still leave 75-90 minutes before class starts.
  • Understand your learning style: Do flashcards work best? What about mindmaps? Answering questions at the end of the chapter? Understand what allows things to sink into your mind the best, and utilize that method of learning.
  • Honestly, you can get by with SparkNotes: I was an English major. We had to read, a lot and I didn't always read the novels. I used SparkNotes and skimmed chapters. While I wouldn't recommend relying on this entirely to graduate, it can help in a pinch.
  • Skipping class: I know I just told you to go, and I do mean that. But sometimes you need to skip class and be lazy or frivolous, and that's fine. Don't make it a habit. I usually allow myself 1-2 "mental health" days per semester. HOWEVER you should be VERY clear on the absence policy of your professors. Some don't take attendance, and others will kick you out if you miss 3 classes. It's always in the syllabus.
  • It's okay to withdraw from a class: Getting a W is better than getting an F. If a class is too much for you, then it's best to step out of it. Most professors will understand, and most grad schools and jobs will too.
  • Be kind to yourself: It's easy to only value yourself through school, as in what grade you got on a test, or how your GPA stacks up against others but we are all human and sometimes we fuck up and sometimes we do poorly and thats alright. Learn from it and move on.
  • Take care of yourself: !!!!! This is very important. Eat as well as you can/enough, sleep enough, don't become addicted to or dependent on drugs/alcohol, exercise (even if its just walking to class), take showers, etc. Sometimes taking care of yourself takes a back seat to taking care of your grades OR to having too much fun, and neither is a good strategy. Yes, college is a time to assert your independence and have fun and party, but if you do too much it will begin to affect your grades and your health.
  • Try to get internships or research assistantships/independent studies: These will look great on your resume and a lot of them are quite interesting/enjoyable. It shows initiative, drive, and motivation! Professors usually have independent studies and career/employment services (if your campus has that) can help with internship placement.
  • These are basic things that I have learned during my college career. I'm sure I could come up with more, but I hope this is helpful!

Sing, rap, dance, cook, act, write and produce music, play the guitar (classical, spanish, lead, and rhythm omg) and the piano and the drums, has the body of an elf king. He’s also AMAZING with children as shown [here - skip to 12:17 and WATCH you won’t regret it] and dogs too! All animals really. He’s Korean Snow White. With abs. And if Snow White was extra.

Also the kindest soul ever. He’s always smiling, even when he’s down. He literally said, and I quote; “No matter how difficult something is, I will always be positive and smile like an idiot.” His then-girlfriend nicknamed him “Happy Virus.” Constantly buys his members gifts, is very tall (well over six feet), and he’s the most extroverted and sociable person - actually friends with everyone. 10/10 amazing human.

His wit is unparalleled like omg, so sassy and hilarious and sharp. Also a huge nerd when it comes to anime, manga, and video games. Once gave a picture of himself to another member as a gift, the lil shit.

He’s incredibly passionate about his career and his members, and I think it was Kyungsoo who said that it’s Baek who keeps them all together at times. In summary: Byun Baekhyun is what happens when a demon and an angel do the do.

D.O./Do Kyungsoo:

First of all, he single-handedly saved the human race from extinction with his voice. He’s savage af, so much so that he’s affectionately nicknamed “Satansoo” and he will smack a bitch. He’s also so soft and squishy at the same time, you’ll get whiplash. And his acTING. Lord in heaven. And I believe he didn’t even have acting lessons?? The nerve of him. He, too, is sex on legs, and he might be quieter than the others, but y’all best listen when he talks cause boy bout to spill the tea.

He’s also very paternal in that he takes care of the other members a lot, like when Kai, his roommate, isn’t feeling well, he’ll care for him or go out to get food for him. And he can cook really well. I’m gonna stop now before I end up writing an entire dissertation ;’)

Oh my god. Anyway. Zhang Yixing is the perfect contradiction. On the one hand, he’s an actual baby lamb - laugh and all. On the other hand, he’s the human embodiment of the NC-17 rating. Like, hide yo kids. Yixing is also one of the Chinese members of EXO, so he often leaves to promote his solo music which is in Chinese, and he works so incredibly hard and deserves all the success. He also writes the lyrics, and composes and arranges the music!

And…his dancing. Proof that god exists. There is literally no part of his body that Yixing does not have absolute command over - and you can see it because he is so precise, confident, and sexy. :’)

Yup. Moving on.

Actually, back to his face (and the rest of him): Remember when Da Vinci was conceptualizing the Vitruvian Man (lol only 90′s kids will remember…1490′s kids, that is). You know that picture of the guy with another pair of arms and legs superimposed on him, inside a circle? The drawing theorizing the ideal proportions of the human body? Yup, true story: Junmyeon was Da Vinci’s muse. Suho’s face is so symmetrical, it inspired mathematicians to write the golden ratio. He is a genetic miracle, a statistical outlier, a national treasure–

Anyway *sweats*. ALSO. Let’s talk about his personality. Myeon is the mom of EXO, the leader, so he’s naturally very parental. He actually chose the stage name “Suho” because it means guardian. He always does his best to keep his kids the members together and doing what they need to be doing. Always pays for things ($Junmoney$), and is the person a lot of them confide in and go to for comfort or advice, especially Sehun.

He’s such a dad too - like his dad joke ratings are off the charts. 10/10 would build you a tree house and tuck you in at night.

People sometimes think he’s cold or reserved because of his face, but as you can see in the gif, he’s literal sunshine. He once cried on stage because he was knocked on the head by a camera - but he wasn’t crying because the injury hurt, he was crying because he wasn’t allowed to perform because of it, and he felt like he was disappointing his fans. He also cried during a radio show when asked about his other members - he said every night before he falls asleep, he prays for them and he prays that they all stay together and are successful and happy. And now I’m crying.

Everyone is in love with him

His dancing resurrected me from the dead, put my children through college, and ended world hunger because damn we are fed when that boy moves.

Sehun was once invited to Paris for a Louis Vuitton fashion show and became king of France. I’m not kidding. All he did was show up, and there was a huge crowd already there to greet him as if he were royalty, and he was voted best dressed at the show by Vogue. He went to the Louvre, and people were studying and appreciating him, the actual art.

1) His smile. It curls up at the corners like this :}

2) When he laughs, he literally goes HAHAHAHAHA like wow, amazing, I want this as my ringtone

3) He screams a lot. Nickelodeon once made a show about him called Jongdae: The Last Pterodactyl

4) HIS VOCALS. Un-freaking-believable. He’s the male version of Mariah Carey.

5) Speaks really good Chinese! (He’s Korean)

6) An amazing human?? He donates to charity so often and he doesn’t do it for publicity either. He takes good care of the other members too.

Jongdae, let me put a ring on it.

Is the least likely to cry

Was chubby (and so adorable!!) as a little kid, and now he has a six pack. Because of his weight as a kid though, he has spoken many times about the issue of body shaming and how people’s perceptions of a person shift based on how they look. He once said these words that made my cold, dead heart beat again: “I don’t have an ideal type. If our hearts match well, then she will look pretty to me.”

Has the strongest arms in EXO. They all arm wrestled and he won and it was the funniest thing ever.

Is not only an idol, he’s also getting his Ph.D. Dr. Kim. I can’t believe….

Wants to open his own coffee shop, and I don’t drink coffee, but I would chug any dish-water-coffee-grinds-filth that he would serve me because damn I love him.

His laugh. Astounding. Also don’t stand too close when he laughs because he will hit you. It’s just what he does lmao

He’s basically a hip young old man - so hot but so sleepy. He’ll sleep at any given opportunity.

Very fond of fried chicken. And dogs. But not in terms of eating, for the latter

Learned ballet for ten years and it shows, and I just wANT TO SEE HIM IN A LEOTARD DAMMIT

He has darker skin than the other members which people used to make fun of him for and still do comment on, but he says he loves it and he is proud of his body :’) we are too bby!!

Other random facts

EXO originally had 12 members but 3 left and we’re not going to talk about it okay? okay

- Kyungsoo once said to the camera that he is “not pure”

- Yixing starred in a gay sci-fi movie where he and this other dude have a baby

- Suho is a health nut. Just like how girls always have pads and tampons on them, Suho has multivitamins

For @the-porcelain-doll-xo because I’m the friend that wants to drag you into hell with me, and I can’t wait for you to get into EXO ahhhhh ily <33

A little love for the signs (From a Libra sun, Leo moon)
  • Dear Aries: It doesn't matter how dark times are, you are there for me. And I know you will always support me. You can make me happy like no one else can. You can say something that isn't even funny and I have to laugh with you. I could talk all night with you. About anything. You are full of light, full of life. You deserve everything bright.
  • Dear Taurus: Even though I've never really been so close to you to say that, I want you to know that you're worth it. You are beautiful, your smile helps people not to give up. So don't give up on yourself. You're strong and I know you smile through the pain, but it's okay. We all go through that and I wanted to tell you that you're not alone.
  • Dear Gemini: You are funny, you are witty, you always know how to make me laugh. I am inspired by you. You are so sociable, yet you know how to be alone and overthink things. You can do decisions by yourself, you don't hesistate to make the right choice. I admire you for that. Also, your art is beautiful. You are art.
  • Dear Cancer: I know we haven't been best friends. I know we had fights and that you broke my trust too often. But I realized, you are only a human being, just as me. Everyone keeps making mistakes, but no one wants to admit that. I hope for you that you'll be happy in the future. I want you to concentrate more on yourself, not on others because you are you, and no one can be that for you.
  • Dear Leo: Whenever I talk to you, it feels like we understand each other without saying a word. You are passionate and you are optimistic. You are the person I look up to, you brighten everyone's day, yet no one knows if you're dying inside. You are beautiful and you know it. You taught me it's completely fine to love yourself. So do it.
  • Dear Virgo: You're so selfless. You always try to help me, doesn't matter if you understand me or not. I know that sometimes it's hard for you to show that you care about me, but I notice in this little things you do for me that you do care. And that's fine. You're human. It's okay to break down. It's okay to talk to someone. You will get through this all. I'm right here by your side.
  • Dear Libra: I feel like everyone of you is my sister or my brother. You can make me feel special without knowing it. When we're talking about god and the world, it's like I've known you all my life, even if it's just hours. I want you to look at the mirror and say "I'm proud". Be confident. Believe in youself. Only if you try that, no one will stop you from loving yourself and the world.
  • Dear Scorpio: I don't even know where to start. You changed my life. You taught me things in an emotional way I never thought I'd experience. With every wise word you said you took my breath away. It doesn't matter how much time will fly, I will always remember you. You are my first love and you make everything feel so real. Everytime you look at me, I feel special. You taught me how to love someone and I taught you how to love yourself. Be happy. No matter how we're gonna end, I want you to remember us. You deserve the entire universe.
  • Dear Sagittarius: You doubt yourself more than anyone else. You wear that beautiful smile everyday, but inside you don't even know who you are. I have so much fun with you everytime we do something together. Don't let that happiness die. People look up on you. And you have to do your own thing. Don't give a shit what others think. Find out what you need, what you want and what you love. Everything else will come by time.
  • Dear Capricorn: You are one of the stongest yet most broken person I know. Or should I say, pretend to know? You hide your emotions, afraid of being hurt or replaced. I tell you something: There are people who love you and care about you. There is hope. You can have whatever you want in life, if you're just willing to accept your feelings and yourself.
  • Dear Aquarius: Being around you is like jumping from one cloud to another. Everything feels easier. Even maths. Life is easier with you. The weight of all the bad things in life are gone. I don't know how you're able to make me feel like this, but I'm sure it makes you very special and I hope you never stop making people feel like this because it's one of the best feelings ever.
  • Dear Pisces: If I'm sad, I know I can always talk to you. You always have a solution to my problem. Even if it's just a sentence like "It's okay, we will find a way.", it works. It makes me feel better. You're the most selfless person I've ever met and you're always there for your loved ones. Just take care of yourself, too, because your life is as important as the lives of everyone else.
My Love Letter to the Eorzean Art Exchange

As you all probably know by now, this past EAE was its last. And there’s been a lot of discussion going around about pisspoor attitudes in the FFXIV artist community, and how the ONLY TWO people who ran the EAE were seriously mistreated.

This is a huge problem, and I’m very disheartened to hear the things that have been said, not only about the AGAIN, TWO PEOPLE who ran the EAE, but also about the wonderful artists who dedicated themselves to producing something for someone else.

You’ve probably already seen things about that. I’m not here to talk about it.

Instead, I’m here to talk about how much the EAE meant to me.

I wasn’t part of it until its 2nd go. I’d never really done much as an artist before. Drawing was something I did a lot as a kid, but aside from one lone art class in college, I’d never had any formal training. Digital art was something I’d never tried, save for a brief foray in my youth in which I dubbed it “too hard.” So, when about a year and a half ago I finally purchased a tablet again, my art world changed from something I farted around with every eon or so to a real hobby I enjoyed.

I don’t consider myself an amazing artist (does any artist, really?) but I hear I’ve grown a lot. And, it’s true. My art has come a looooong long way from when I first struggled with learning how to digitally paint. And you can see it in the EAE pieces I did. Because my first one came not more than a month after I’d first gotten my hands on that tablet.

There was no judgment in the EAE. Not from the process. I stepped in, fumbling my way through with all the exhuberant enthusiasm of someone who was finally getting to do something. I’d never done an exchange like this- nor ever. Most probably wouldn’t have let me in. But in the EAE, I was as much an artist as any, and I was given the wonderful gift of getting to do something for someone else.

It was the best. Drawing someone’s character as a surprise- trying to capture the essence and give them something they’d like. It was a chance to spread my wings, to try something new, and to give a little bit of myself to a stranger and hope they’d come away happy.

I think they did- or at least I hope. But no matter what, all four times I particpated in the EAE felt like Christmas.

Getting someone new to paint. Putting out the drawing. Seeing the gallery spread out like a showcase. It was a celebration of us, the artists, the people in this community, drawings so lovingly presented from all skill levels.

From all. That’s the most important part of the EAE. As adults, we can lose touch with our hobbies when we feel we’re just not good enough. We become harder on ourselves, the self-conscious critic that never stymied us when we were young and couldn’t color between the lines. And so, we disconnect, because we become so attached to the quality we fail to love the process. To love our work. And to love ourselves.

But in the EAE no one was excluded. All were welcome. Because we all are artists.

The, again, two people who put on the EAE never failed to put their best foot forward. They were some of the kindest, most understanding organizers I’d ever had the fortune of interacting with. I knew multiple people who struggled to get their pieces out on time for one reason or another, but the EAE was nothing but supportive. Even when putting together a truly massive exchange, and all for us.

It’s easy to underestimate, standing from the outside, how much work goes into producing a collaborative community project like that. It’s easy to take it for granted.

But they did their best, and they did it well. And they gave this wonderful gift to the community five times, despite how hard it must have been- and how thankless such a job can be.

So, I’m thanking them now. Thank you for bringing this to us. Thank you for all your hard work, your passion, your energy. Your tireless support of all artists in the FFXIV community no matter where they’re at in their journey, your genuine care of others, your commitment in seeing your vision real.

The EAE may be over. But I hope your passion is not.

It really meant the world to me.

anonymous asked:

what exactly is that show with "Eliot"? I know him as Jacob Stone from Librarians, but all of a sudden I'm seeing this show on the librarians blog and other places but I have nO IDEA WHAT IT IS

Oh hon let me tell you a thing

It’s called leverage and it will change your life.

If you’ve seen the show Hustle it’s kind of like that but better. Which is saying something because Hustle is really good.

The premise:

A con artist, a hacker, a hitter, and a theif turn from a life of pure crime, to a life of crime for a good purpose, led by a former insurance investigator.

They target the rich and powerful that are picking on the little guy, and basically set them up due to their own greed and selfishness.

Then stand there and watch while the mark implodes on itself

The team:

Former insurance investigator, turned Mastermind and crime dad.

Is much smarter than he looks. Somhow manages to herd cats (aka his crime children) and get the job done, despite being a human dissaster.

Con artist, art theif, and crime mom.

Is the most incredible acress to grace this earth, when she’s not actually trying to act.

seriously don’t let her act on stage.

genius hacker, fountain of snark

giant adorable nerd.

Also pretty much the best dressed on the show which was refreshing, because as the huge computer nerd, that’s usually the stereotypical role of social outcast loner. Hardison has the best style and the best actual inter-personal skills and empathy of anyone on the show. Sophie can manipulate people, but hardison actually understands people. And cares about them. Biggest heart. Ray of sunshine.

parker my homegirl. Best thief in the world.

socially awkward and you never quite know what she’s going to do next. It could be eat cereal. It could be blowing up the building.

My dear eliot. The “muscle.” But also…the secret brain.

he’s much, much smarter than he looks. And everyone, including his team at times, underestimates him.

that’s code for “i love you”.

Bottom line:

Every.Single.Character has an incredible, organic character arc. And make progress that you could never see coming in season 1.

It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. A lot.

Watch it.

Stress that there is “only” five seasons, even though it finishes perfectly and wraps up better than almost any other series i’ve ever watched.

Watch it again.

retro-sci-fi-songbird  asked:

Do you ever get into these funks where u feel like ur art is always going to suck so what's the point or periods where you want reassurance/support from people, but you don't believe them when they do give you these things? And then you feel bad for even bringing it up at all bc 'what if I'm being *too needy* and just shitting on everyone's happiness/good moods'? Kinda where I'm at, debated even sending an ask at all bc I didn't want to bother anyone

Oh boy, oh dude -pained laugh- of course I do.

I don’t really struggle with needing other people’s reassurance, to be quite fair, I’ve never been a needy person in terms of validation because I’ve always been quite independent (or reclusive…..if you will.) But I struggle with my own validation of my own art. Put it this way; While you need for others to support you and remind you that what you do is good, and you’ve improved, I need that from myself. But I rarely get it, if I’m perfectly honest.

So yes, I do get into moods where I feel like my art has not improved at all. In ages. Or where it feels like there’s a certain technique I’m trying to learn, and struggling so much that I start believing I’ll never learn it at all. Or I’ll never be good at it. People who do art professionally can still struggle with these things, believe me.

I think part of being an artist is… never being 100% satisfied with what you do. Ever. Never good enough, you’re never happy enough with how it looks. Now this might not happen to everyone but it does happen to every artist I’ve met so… there you go.

If what you need is a little help in this department, let me tell how I try to fight those feelings myself.

First of all you can see that feeling of lack of satisfaction as something bad, a negative feeling that will do nothing but make you freeze in place and feel like there’s no point in trying because you’ll never be good enough. Which, by the way, is not true. Or… you can see it as one of the most useful traits of an artistic person. It is, I’m not bullshitting. Keeping a leveled head and realising there are always things to improve and learn is the best thing that can happen to you, if you think about it. Because there is always room for improvement. Always. No one’s art is perfect. So take it as a benign, humbling feeling, that will allow you to see the faults in your artwork so that you can then learn to correct them. So that you can always strive for more, to become better, improve in those areas that you lack more.

But the trick to this, is to pair that mentality with a positive attitude towards your work, as well. If you do nothing but think that you need to get better, you’ll obsess over your flaws and ignore your many talents. Which you do have. For every time you feel like something needs to be improved, try to find something else in which you have already improved. Realise that you’ve come a long way. Remember your art years ago, notice the many things you do better now. Notice the things you weren’t able to do before, but you’re able to do now.

So, your brain shouldn’t say “This is bad, I need to suck less.”, instead, train it to go “My art is good, let’s try to get even better.”

Your art will never suck as long as you put passion in it, alright? I promise you. And the more passion and the more time you put into it, the better it’ll get. There’s a point to it. Practice makes (near) perfect.

And needing validation is not a bad thing. Artists work with a visual medium but intangible emotions. We strive to provoke something inside people, feelings. To know that we’ve succeeded and that others enjoy what we do feels good. I believe anyone who works with a product that they’re putting out there for the public wants to see said public enjoy it, no? This is the same thing. Finding happiness in other people’s enjoyment is a very positive thing.

That said… please remember that, while having people enjoy your art is good, your art should be first and foremost for you. So many artists get tangled up in trying to please people, and lose their passion and start hating what they do because they stop creating for themselves. Draw to have fun. Draw for your personal enjoyment. Don’t care too much about other people’s reactions and don’t try to please every demand, because it will exhaust you. In short, don’t live for their reaction to your art only. Draw because it makes you happy.

(I really hope this works, its just showing me the title of my image but idk maybe that’s normal? Ive never  submitted anything before so :/)

I wanted to thank you for your unbelievable dedication to all your blogs, because, honestly, how do you have the time for all this? You have all these unbelievably well planned out concepts and storylines and all of you art just seems to ooze love and joy for what you do, and you put so much work into this. Like, someone sends you an ask about a funny thought they had and within five days it’s not only a meme but a whole comic and the best thing that has happened to most of us all year. And it’s honestly unreal how much you interact with us, your followers and fans. It feels like we’re all one big family, even if many of us don’t know each other, because we all interact with you, and you’re like that red silken string that ties all of us together. And whatever you do, it’s awesome. How do you do that?! Like, you tell us you’re gonna take a break and basically tell us you’re gonna go shitpost and it turns out what you consider ‘shitposting’ is the mutant AU none of us knew we needed in our lives. And, speaking of shitposting, your shitpost hours with the gang? Do you know how much I love those??? And you know, I noticed that all of the people who got their zines got a Legmon (Legfam saved my life™ through unbelievable wholesomeness, which is also the reason why I’m sending you this here and not on ask-kimdaily) thank-you card, and I thought if there ever was someone who deserved a thank-you, it’s you. So I borrowed a graphics tablet and drew you something. I know it’s not the prettiest (I downloaded the first free digital art program I came across, and it turns out the free version of Mischief doesn’t let you do layers) but I think the thought comes across well enough. I’d like to hug you in person, but alas, interscreenar travel is not invented yet, so Legmon will have to do it for me.

Admin: OMG I JUST SAW THIS AND IM CRYING ACTUAL REAL TEARS THIS IS SO SWEET???? I’m so so so thankful you took time to write all of this you don’t even know how much it means to me. I was feeling a bit down ‘cause of life these past few days but this just made my entire week :’-(((((( It’s so rewarding to know that my work has brought such a loving community together. Like no joke, all of you are literally the nicest and sweetest and I couldn’t be any luckier to have found such an amazing group of people to share my art with. I’ll work even harder in the future to create a space that gives you guys as much positive experience you guys can have. Making people happy with my art truly really is one of the greatest joys of my life and you guys never fail to let me know. For that, I’m eternally grateful. Anyway, I LOVE THIS IN ITS ENTIRETY AND I WILL FRAME AND PRINT IT AND STARE AT IT FOREVER thank you so much ily and all of u guys :’-(((( 💖💖💘💖💘💗

i know its nice being ship friendly and stuff but SOMEONE'S POINTING A GUN AT YOU, THEY HATE LEVIHAN AND THEY'RE GONNA KILL YOU IF YOU DON'T CONVINCE THEM OTHERWISE, YOU GOTTA DEFEND LEVIHAN WITH YOUR LIFE, WHAT'D YOU SAY? GO!

You know, that’s a really weird murderer. Anyway, THIS IS FUN! Honestly, i’d be dead already, because i don’t really care about convincing anyone when it comes to shipping. Before i start, i’m gonna state that ANYTHING I’LL SAY HERE IS BECAUSE I’M FIGHTING FOR MY LIFE, DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONAL, GUYS. These will be pretty much the reasons why i ship them. The first part is a bunch of “objective” reasons (well as objective as it can get, because shipping can’t be a totally objective thing) and the other one is personal, so is up to you when to stop reading this. I apologize in advance for my English.

1)      Levi and Hanji are both really interesting and complex characters. He isn’t just a typical shonen badass guy and she’s not a typical crazy scientist. Levi is actually , from my pov, the most caring and selfless character of all SnK, he literally sacrifices himself over and over for the sake of others. Hanji isn’t just this sweet cheerful character, she has a mesmerizing willpower, nothing can stop her.

2)      They complement each other amazingly. They are both strong and smart, but in different ways. Any virtue that Levi doesn’t have, Hanji has it. Every flaw that Hanji has, Levi doesn’t. And they share two really important virtues, which are the foundation of any healthy relationship: they are both so loyal and passionate. They are literally willing to give up their lives for the people they love.

3)      THEIR INTERACTIONS ARE SO FUN TO READ/WATCH. You just know that, whenever they are together, something great is going to happen. There’s something refreshing about them, about their bickering, about the way they work together, about the way they care about each other so deeply.

4)      I think nobody can understand them more than each other. They have experienced similar things as soldiers, they have lost people they love countless times. I bet they could be sharing each other stories all night long, reminiscing all of those good times with Moblit, Erwin and their old squads.

5)      Okay, i won’t force my ship to anyone, but since i’m fighting for my life here, i’ll say i think there are actual canon hints for Levihan. Like the “Levi bathes Hanji” thing, the “we tell each other everything” thing (don’t u dare telling me Hanji clearly said they’re just friends, cuz isn’t that what every Levihan shipper has as a headcanon? The idea of them not admitting their true feelings and say “we’re just friends” ‘cause they’re both awkward dorks), their interaction in ACWNR, their interaction in Shingeki! Chuugakkou, and the “Levihan is similar to Eremika” thing. It’s up to you, random killer, to decide if that means romance or not.

6)      I hate to fangirl here, but HAVE U SEEN THEM? They are both beautiful and would have babies as beautiful and brilliant as them. What a blessing. I love drawing them so much because their character design is gorgeous. Levi with his cold colors and Hanji with the warm colors, they even complement each other in that aspect.

7)      The Levihan fandom is amazing. Besides the fact that there’s no drama and everyone is so kind, I’m pretty sure this is the ship with the funniest fan art. Even the most serious person would smirk even a little bit while scrolling through the Levihan tag. I mean, we’re all about the laughs. All of the other ships usually focus on the classic romantic stuff (i say “classic” , because from my pov there’s nothing more romantic than the OTP having fun ❤). With Levihan, you’ll get from the most intense fan art to the most ridiculous headcanon, it’s so much fun. Some Levihan artists are pretty well known among non Levihan shippers because of that same reason, like @alemanriq, @trash-god or @drinkyourfuckingmilk . I mean, really, if you’re feeling down and need to cheer up a bit, they’re the way to go.

One of the main arguments people have against Levihan is that they’re too different, so it wouldn’t work. They even go as far as saying that Levi doesn’t really care that much about Hanji. My first response is that both Hanji and Levi are highly misunderstood characters. We don’t have to let our personal experience makes us decide what is love and what isn’t. We all show our love in very different ways.

Now heres my second argument to that idea and this is gonna get personal. If you don’t wanna read about my life, skip this.

So I've been looking at the tumblr lifting community's posts for awhile now and I'm obsessed and amazed; I've never lifted before but I really want to it looks so fun and I want free cute shit, but I'm so so scared!! How do I get over that and what/where would you recommend lifting for my very first time ever? Any tips or advice? I worship y'all 🙏🏼

oooookay lil nugget here we go.

first off - its okay to be scared. its actually better if you keep a little piece of you thats always scared, no matter if you’re experienced or a beginner. thats something that helps you keep track of what’s going on around you and helps you not get caught. when you get cocky or over confident, thats when trouble starts.

i cannot stress how important it is to start small.
start small.
start sosososososo small.
smol

like a lipgloss from walmart or one plain shirt from old navy. maybe a lil pack of beads from hobby lobby. whatever you do, do it small.

this lowers the chance of you getting caught, and the chance of you freaking out more.

do this a couple times. lil thing here, lil thing there. this builds confidence. the more confident you are with yourself, the more likely you are to start pulling in bigger hauls.

be patient. dont rush anything. this is by no means a competition. this whole process of confidence-gaining takes weeks, maybe months for some people.

and another thing - the majority of us on here that are pulling in a shit ton of stuff? we’ve been doing this for years. ive been lifting for 3/almost 4 years now. do not feel like you have to hurry and catch up to us.

secondly -do your homework. read through people’s tip pages on here. read about hooks, magnets, detachers, keys, all the different types of security tags, concealment methods, horror stories - ANYTHING. everything will be helpful down the road. read up on how other people got caught so you dont make the same mistakes. read up on how that girl managed to bag 3 naked palettes and 15 Kat Von D liquid lipsticks. learn about cam placement and how JCP Sephora is a place to stay away from. learn SA behavior and how to tell if they are being nice or plain sus. Learn how to tell if a bag is going to be a good lifting partner or if its going to be a hassle getting things inside. get familiar with every aspect of this community. follow as many people as you can. get inspiration from everyone. learn this life. live it. breathe it.

thirdly - try and pair up with an experienced buddy. i have found this to be so helpful. you get to see first hand how they do what they do. you get to see them in action, and learn their methods. however, know that going out with more than 2 other people is sure to get you noticed and tailed. keep the lil lifting group to either a pair or 3 people. make sure you can trust them. make sure you know them.

STORES:
Old Navy: they dont tag anything other than heavy coats and sweaters, some dresses, jeans, and in the summer some shorts. i re-vamped my whole wardrobe this summer courtesy of ON, but ive seen on here that they’ve started source tagging…. which makes me sad. so double check before you out anything into your bag.
Hobby Lobby: there are like 7 cams per store all focused on the cashiers. go crazy. get your much needed art supplies. this is a great store for beginners - and other lifters who love crafting.
Cotton On: nothing, and i mean NOTHING is tagged. idk why, but these hoes never tag anything and it makes me wonder what they’re even doing. i got christmas gifts for my brothers here this year, so i highly recommend this store. super easy.
Dillard’s: do not let the large size of the store intimidate you - this place is heaven. sometimes you’ll get lucky and somethings been left off the rack and untagged. sometimes theres that teally cute wallet that you’ve wanted for a while and it doesnt have a single tag on it. go for it. conceal in the dressing rooms. trust me. formal dresses? no tags. (from what ive seen, and ive been to 3 Dillard’s in 2 different cities.) their desinger jewelrythat they keep down there? go for it. none of its source tagged or anything. i walked out once with 5 pairs of mate spade earrings and 2 wallets worth the 100 each. just pay attention to your surroundings and you’ll do just fine.

TIPS:
- in the winter its cold as dicks, so wear sweaters. utilize these babies for all they’re worth. 1. sleeves are great for concealing small items like jewelry and lipsticks. 2. “i am so hot from all this shopping, is it okay if i have one of your bags to carry my sweater in? i would really appreciate it” (note: this only works with really nice SAs. some will be bitches and shut you down. you might have to try a couple of stores before you get one. and now you have a free shopping bag!) 3. put your purse in the crook of your elbow and drape your sweater over it. this helps conceal how big your purse is to begin with and hide how much its increased in size when you’re walking out. 4. idk they’re warm and fuzzy. they make me happy.
- boots: stick things in there in case you forgot your purse or something. you can stick small things like jewelry and face masks down in there, its great.
- go through your mom’s closet. or your aunt’s. grandmother’s. rich best friend, i dont care. more often than not, they have a couple of extra shopping bags from stores they’ve been too. my mom has Bath and Body Works for days, along with a couple of Coach bags and Ralph Lauren. these shopper bags can be used in the same way as a purse for hiding things in them. hide them in yoir bag on the way into a mall, and then in the bathroom, take out your lifted clothing and stuff one of the bags. that way, when you walk into other stores, the SAs think you’ve bought things from other stores. be careful and know the layout of the mall you’re in though, because if you’re carrying around an Urban Outfitters bag and theres no UO, then you’ve gone and fucked yourself.
- be cautious, be wary, and not get greedy. get in, get out, and live to lift another day.

hope you’ll find some use for all this nonsense, good luck on starting your hobby of lifting and i hope to see some beautiful hauls from you guys!

Question! I noticed - maybe I'm wrong - that in all the adaptations, the casting for the main characters is similar: Darcy is dark haired, and so is Lizzie; Jane is blonde and (for some fascinating reason) Bingley is ginger-y. Is there a reason? something in the books that I missed? Some extra source? It seemed too much a coincidence (although I do love Ginger Bingley) thanks!!!

First off, I’m going to refer back to Mullan’s What Matters in Jane Austen? again, because he’s done a whole chapter on what her characters look like (and starts off with a basic examination of casting choices in adaptations and the admiration or outrage which always follows.) “How people look is often suggested rather than specified in Austen’s novels.” He then goes on to quote Sterne’s Tristram Shandy, “…paint her to your own mind–as like your mistress as you can–as unlike your wife as your conscience will let you.”

All we know of Jane is that she is considered very beautiful–as much is said by Bingley, her mother (who has no difficulty criticizing her children when they displease her,) and even Darcy must admit it as a fact. Looks are important in novels where often penniless girls must rely on other attractions in their manners and person–”…words used so frequently about characters when we first meet them: handsome, pretty, gentlemanlike, elegant…”. And yet she avoids specifics–perhaps as a reaction to other novels of her era, where a heroine’s precise points of beauty are totted up among her other virtues to make her a peerless wonder. Austen’s heroines are often described by other characters, rather than the narration, as it’s important to consider who is looking, and how, when looking at their judgements. Some people use a mention in Jane Austen’s letters about Jane wearing the colour green and Elizabeth preferring yellow to be some kind of marker of what their haircolours must have been in Austen’s mind’s eye, but that’s a tenuous argument at best, and if Austen had wanted the world in general to know imagined particulars about Jane and Elizabeth, she would have set them down in the text.

We know Elizabeth’s eyes are fine, and dark, but beyond that, we are given no details. On a genetic level, dark eyes are far more likely to occur in people with darker hair, but Austen wasn’t working with genetics–and dark eyes paired with lighter hair can sometimes be a rare sign of remarkable beauty, as in the descriptions of Irene in Galsworthy’s Forsyte Saga books. (A description which was entirely ignored in the casting of my future wife Gina McKee, but then Irene’s beauty and her allure is such a pivotal force in the novels that to pin it down as necessarily belonging to certain shades of colouring is to make it more trite than it truly is. Irene’s beauty is something beyond what one sees at first glance–it is transcendent charm.)

Dark could mean brown, or also a very dark blue or grey–it’s impossible to tell, exactly. Anne Elliott’s eyes are mild and dark, Fanny Price’s are soft and light, Harriet Smith’s are blue, Jane Fairfax’s a deep grey, (and her lashes and eyebrows called dark, giving us some notion of the likely shade of her hair,) Mary Crawford’s are sparkling and dark…eyes are often the only thing near to a solid description we are given of physical attributes, and even then half of the description is more to do with the expression of the personality or feeling of the character through their glances and gazes, rather than specifically the colour of their irises. (Only Emma Woodhouse’s exact eye-colour is known–they are “hazle” and no adaptation so far has given enough of a shit to make certain of casting.) Marianne Dashwood has very dark eyes, and there is a general comparative description of the figures of the two sisters–but casting directors rarely, if ever, I think, take specifics of figures into account beyond an ‘acceptable’ level of Hollywood slimness.

Now, for the casting trends (exceptions to the pattern you laid out being the 1940 P&P’s Greer Garson being a dirty-blonde/light brown Elizabeth, while Maureen O’Sullivan’s Jane had very dark hair; and the 1980 miniseries with Elizabeth Garvie’s Eliza also having light brown hair while Sabina Franklyn’s Jane was several shades darker–but indeed, the two more recent and well-known adaptations of 1995 and 2005 have the colourings you mentioned,) it’s probably just down to Hollywood mechanics where you’re going to have to combine the tropes of a comparative Ugly Duckling sister as well as a Best Friend/Beta Couple plotline. Coding a blonde woman (or man) as ‘good’ and a darker-haired person as ‘less good’ has been a Thing since long before cinema showed up on the scene. There’s a reason Laura Ingalls spends so much time inwardly (and outwardly) bitching about her sister Mary’s luck in being blonde (and also better-behaved, though this is never explicitly tied to the fact that Mary is blonde, but just ties INTO the overall notion that Mary is The Better Daughter.) Dark-haired heroines throughout older literature have bemoaned their lack of golden locks (notably also in LM Montgomery’s works, with Anne Shirley’s famous sensitivity about her hair being red, but also briefly in Emily Starr’s contemplation of her own black hair and atypical looks, which gets a bit of verse thrown at it which I can’t find sourced anywhere else so must have been made up by Montgomery herself: “If the bards of old the truth have told the sirens had raven hair. But over the earth since art had birth, they paint the angels fair.“

So culturally, in the west, there’s a pervasive notion (especially when it comes to women,) that dark-haired women are the ‘darker’ side of their humanity…the temptresses, the more-likely-to-be-bad. (Though any reasonable reader would be like “…well, they’re human, you see, not out-and-out evil.”) But of course anyone compared to the fair-haired saintly paragon of womanhood would look bad–and so equally is the angelic blonde woman a trope in literature, often but not always used in comparisons against her brunette foil.

In cinema, quite often it’s just to better differentiate between characters, and to use these assumptions which are deeply entrenched in our cultures to play upon our immediate and almost instinctive reactions to visual cues. Jane is super-good, so she’s blonde. Bingley is likewise a bright and easy-going character, with more elements of comedy about him, so he’s got lighter hair, too, either as a strawberry blonde or redhead–but he is definitely the sidekick. I, personally, would be all for a ginger Darcy. Or a ginger-everybody P&P. (But that’s not going to happen, because redheaded men are culturally de-sexed/made less masculine or attractive, whereas redheaded women are more inclined to be overly-sexualized. Humanity is weird.) Darcy is a brooding brunette, because darker hair in the case of a male character gives them gravitas and mystery. It’s that damn Byronic thing coming into play. Dark hair, dark secrets. It’s a visual construct we’ve trapped ourselves into, at this point. Also, when you’ve got two love-stories running more or less concurrently, an audience needs visual markers to help them quickly identify and individualize (and therefore emotionally-invest in) the characters. More morally-dubious and fascinating hero and heroine Elizabeth and Darcy are brunettes because we see them making mistakes and drawing our attention by being fuck-ups. Lizzie can’t be the Prettier Sister, so she’s more automatically made the Brunette Underdog. Darcy is brooding and mysterious–so it’s very easy to make him dark-haired. Their contrasts are in their secondary characters–Jane and Bingley. Jane is prettier, and good-hearted (moreso than Eliza, anyway,) so she ascends to Blonde. Bingley is the Good Friend, and seemingly with fewer social defects compared to Darcy, so as the Nice Man, he gets lighter hair to also differentiate him from Darcy and make him more matchy-matchy with Jane. Our brains are making these connections based on visuals even before we’ve gotten half a dozen words of dialogue from any of these people.

This happens often in films and TV shows–in Coppola’s Dracula, Sadie Frost (a natural brunette) was made a vibrant redhead as Lucy to contrast to Winona Ryder’s more sedate and mysterious Mina. (Though this also had the fun effect of tying in a possible reference to the historical link between redhaired people and vampires, and the whole mythos of redhaired women in particular and sexual allure/witchcraft/spiritual evil–particularly as THIS version of Lucy is much more heavily sexualized compared to her book counterpart. I don’t know how much of the hair-colour-change was on purpose from Coppola’s perspective, and largely it’s just handwaved as being so people could really tell apart the ONLY TWO MAJOR FEMALE CHARACTERS IN THE FILM, but personally I think it’s an interesting choice–particularly compared to Katie McGrath’s blonde Lucy.) Again, we see the contrasting of virtue coded in hair-colouring, as Lucy is a character known for her sweetness and purity…as well as being a secondary female character to the heroine, and hence her more-virtuous foil…with lighter hair. Mina’s place as an educated, working, and married woman, with a more active part in the narrative, particularly as her brushes with dark forces mark her as ‘unholy’, makes it easier to code her as ‘complicated’, i.e. a brunette. Interestingly, this is set on its head in Penny Dreadful, where Mina becomes the blonde, doomed damsel, and her friend/lover Vanessa is the raven-haired woman at the center of a maelstrom of fucked up shit full of vampires, witches, and devils. Essentially if you want your heroine to go ‘bad’ a little (or a lot), give her a better-by-comparison blonde friend and have at it.

Of course, since these tropes are so pervasive, we do see stories where this is purposefully mirrored or mocked, where the icy blonde is the femme fatale or turncoat who uses her appeal to deceive others–but this relies just as heavily on the initial assumption that a fair-haired character is intrinsically ‘better’ on a moral level.

To conclude, this is why I think we see that general trend with colouring when it comes to casting/styling these characters in cinematic adaptations, as we have really very little in the text to go on, but from the characters themselves there are long traditions to draw from for visual cues to quickly and adeptly condition audiences to draw certain assumptions about these characters which enable us to rapidly bond with and understand them to some degree. I want to specify “Western” audiences because the blonde/brunette thing is at its roots kind of a colourism thing which is grossly pervasive in a white supremacist society going back for centuries, and Caucasian beauty standards do not and should not apply globally; but as the media most of us are familiar with is dominated by this white heteronormative patriarchal history, these tropes and codings exist for ultimately gross reasons. Frankly we could all do without them from this day forward, but change can be slow and so these stereotypes continue to exist and blonde people on-screen for now often continue to be the tacit code for ‘these people are the purest bestest people’ while the darker-haired people are almost always more morally-grey, complicated–even troubling–and made more ‘fascinating’ by their more flawed natures. It’s a shitty way of doing things, but we’ve been culturally conditioned to respond to things like that, and so it works.

Anyway, thanks for asking this one–my answer went to places I wasn’t fully expecting me to go, but I enjoyed blowing the dust off my film studies qualifications and I always love yelling about culture.

Hi Em! I'm a 23 y.o. self taught artist and art student currently in school. I've always felt self-conscious about posting pictures of my artwork online, but I'm starting to think it's necessary to gain any kind of traction as an artist. I would love start posting about my work, but I'm not sure what the best method or website is. How did you start exposing your work online? Would you recommend Tumblr as a starting point? And did you ever worry about plagiarism?

Hello! Hope its ok to publish this, figured it might be a little helpful   :)

posting artwork online is definitely a way to get your work noticed by a large audience, but it is absolutely not the only way! If you mean ‘traction’ by general people-seeing-your stuff then yes, the net is massive and you’ll probably be seen, but that said, a few of the projects I’ve worked on that I enjoyed the most came from word of mouth or other non-internet places. Sometimes I’ve felt like ‘if I don’t post my art online…did I ever really draw it?’ and I’ve had to remind myself that art exists without internet, and its ok to keep stuff to myself.

Something that is very under-valued is just telling people, friends and family, new people you meet. It might feel weird at first, but I’ve gotten used to saying ‘I draw!’or something along those lines, and if they’re interested, show them! I’ve gotten a few surprise commissions that way.

As far as sites go, I’m just on tumblr and instagram (too lazy to do twitter or deviantart or make the code for my own website and I’m not a fan of social media in general really but gee is it handy and fun sometimes). I would say just pick anything, tumblr is accessible and easy to use, as is instagram- but my best advice would be to just begin, try one, and go from there. You’ll get the hang of it, learn the ways of the online art jungle, and become more confident as time goes by! When I first started posting on tumblr I didn’t know what to expect or even what tumblr was really like (was stupid enough to make my art blog a side blog, don’t do that lmao tumblr won’t let you change it)- i just threw silm stuff out and some people were lovely enough to catch it, and sometimes tell me they liked it.

The key thing is remembering that whether or not you have 98329772363 followers, your artwork is still valid and important, and you’re still getting better with every artwork you post (or don’t post).

Plagiarism- I’m quite lucky, I think, in the way that my art is mostly too messy and strangely composed to be used for commercial purposes without my permission, and as of yet I haven’t seen anyone trying to sell it or anything…let me know tho

if you meant plagiarism in a stylistic/content way, sure it happens, a couple of times I’ve been confused and even incredulous. It’s exasperating sometimes but I figure in the long run, whoever it is is going to grow into their own way sooner or later. Naturally I’m not condoning it, I’m a believer in studying hard from other artists you love but keeping your studies to yourself!

The majority of the internet population don’t go in for plagiarism and other nastiness, so I wouldn’t worry too much. The support and feedback and friends you make vastly outweigh the cons of posting your art online :) Going on from that, when you’re an artist on tumblr, you can network, talk to other artists, do trades, commissions, zines, shower people with fanart of their characters, it goes on and on, and it’s wonderful. I was lucky enough to meet people I met on tumblr in the real only last weeks and it was the weirdest and best thing

Good luck!

Hi Leela! What do you think about this? "[...]Maybe I'm not just a ken doll for you to objectify and ship and wish I lived the life you wanted.[...]" I know he is talking about important topics here but the ship part caught my attention. I know that Dan and Phil deeply appreciate their fandom, and sometimes they push their own boundaries a little bit and laugh with us about the phan things we make: fanarts, fanfics, edits, etc. But after this little clip... I'm really getting concerned. [1/3]

What if this whole time I have been hurting them? I’m an artist and I have never tagged them in my phanarts, I just share my drawings with the people who like the idea of phan and that’s all. But even if my drawings are just innocent illustrations of them holding hands, they are phanarts, pieces of art about the idea of them being a couple. So, I have fueled the idea of phan, I have contributed to it. And I know D&P have embraced the phan thing too- as a funny part of their branding. But what if the shipping thing has reached a point where D&P no longer feel comfortable with it? Dan sounded so sincere… and I really don’t know how to feel right now tbh.

ahhhh let me start by just saying, it’s okay. i totally, completely understand why dan’s comment may have upset you or worried you but please don’t feel badly. i promise that all of the things you’re doing as a member of this fandom and just as a viewer of dnp generally are all okay. good and great, even, because they bring you happiness and that’s the point.

dan’s ken doll comment was nothing close to an original or new thought, and it’s a frustration he’s shared a number of times throughout the years. in his roast yourself video he asserts that he only gets views bc he’s a white guy in a cute ship. in the description of the pinof 7 bloopers he talks about how he’s a piece of meat for us vultures to consume and pick apart. a few years ago in live shows he’d say things like, “for those of you who only watch me because you like to fantasize about me being in a sexual relationship with my friend, i’ll go get my friend,” as a way of introducing a phil cameo. let’s just be completely honest here: dan’s relationship to the concept of people actively talking about, writing about, thinking about, his relationship with phil is not a positive one, and even more broadly than that, dan’s relationship to the concept of people following him and consuming his content due to anything personal about him (whether it be his pretty face or anything else) is not a positive one (unless of course the personal things are ones he’s shared himself in a very controlled/comedic exaggerated manner. aka basically every dinof vid.)

and his observations about this are valid because his career really is founded in part on his constant objectification and the flattening of his humanity by viewers, just as all persona-driven entertainment tends to be. in choosing to grow a following by making content about himself dan necessarily offers himself up for analysis and that is intrinsically dehumanizing. in choosing to remain ambiguous both in sexual orientation and in relationship status with phil, he unwittingly encourages speculation on both of those issues, a speculation which has stayed constant in its fervor over a remarkable number of years. his choices have led to intense scrutiny and a thirsty audience that uses him and his partner as vehicles for fantasy and speculation and that’s also dehumanizing.

all of this sounds bleak but let me just do a quick attempt at telling u why it is also okay. it is okay because it is dan’s choice ultimately. dan could recede from the public eye completely and make content that has nothing to do with himself as a person. he could divorce his real self from his on-screen persona even more. he could continue and even strengthen the boundaries he has drawn up between himself and phil in the public eye. he could just do behind-the-scenes writing or producing or filmmaking instead of continuing to be a youtuber. he could never collab with phil again because the pressure of being scrutinized through a romantic/sexual lens is too great. but. in truth dan has only chosen to become more open about how much he loves phil, closer to him in the public eye than he has ever been. he’s chosen to share more and more of his inner thoughts and monologues about his insecurities and his mental health struggles and his fears and his triumphs than ever before.

he’s chosen to continue inviting us into his life in various ways, on a number of levels because of at least two very important truths: first, that being reduced and objectified is not intrinsically harmful if the person still has control over their lives and everything in it and everything that’s important to them. second, that this same rabid audience is the one that makes dnp some of the most successful creators on youtube–their audience loyalty is completely unrivaled. and this is almost entirely, in my view, a result of how much they actually hold back in comparison to everyone else on the platform. bc of their restraint we go crazy over even like 3 seconds of footage of them in other people’s videos. we watch and re-watch their content and we analyze everything they do to the nth degree. this is their remarkable skill as public figures and entertainers. it’s GOOD for them, not bad, when we sit here at 11:30 pm writing essays about them and their behavior. it’s good for them that you make art celebrating them and their love. all of it is good. and they’re showing with each passing week that they care less and less that part of what we love about them is their connection and love for one another. because we’re not imagining it or creating it out of thin air or forcing two people who don’t love each other to act like they do in order to carry on being profitable. we celebrate it because it’s there and it exists in everything they do, and in return they’re realizing that it’s simply easier for everyone involved if they let themselves be more comfortable and open with it.

so yes, we objectify dan. that’s true and it’s important to be aware of it. yes dan becomes irritated about it at times because he has deep-set insecurities about this life as an entertainer and the aspects of his content that keep people watching (he doesn’t want it to be things that are personal to him. he wants people to watch for the content itself). and despite all of this, the objectification/dehumanization do not harm dan in any substantial way because ultimately dan still has complete control over what parts of his private life he shares and what sort of content he makes. knowing this, i think now more than ever before, you most certainly do not need to feel bad about your art or anything else you do as a follower of dan and phil who also “ships” dan and phil. just rewatch the pastel edits vid and ask yourself if that seems like a couple of dudes who are in any sort of pain/hurt about the idea that people like watching them together. nah.

Curious, what are some fics / writers you do recommend? You can include your own if you want:) I'm new here and I don't know where to begin

Hey, Anon! I have a LOT of them that I love, so here’s a general top 20 of my favorites. These are in NO particular order. I tried to include the full spectrum of smutty-to-platonic, one-shot-to-multichapter, etc. I’m also including 5 that I love of my own at the bottom, okay?

Let the Mermen Flirt with Me by @mythosethan . If you love MerRhett, you’ll love this fic. Rated E.

Hungry Ghosts by @ratchetrhink. A lot of great fluff, angst, and smut in this one. Rated E.

It’s the End of the World As We Know It by @awkwardkermitfrog . Okay, I’m just going to give you the warning now. This is a GREAT read, but it’s a hard one. I literally had to take a Xanax after because of a panic attack. IT’S SO REALISTIC AND AMAZING. Just go in prepared that it’s a hard read.

Five Days in May by @mythicaliz . This is such a good “what if?” story and I love the plot of them being away for 5 days. Rated M.

Flinch War Rematch by @themouthking . This one is just hot. I’ll leave it at that. It’s sexy and I love it. I’ve only read it about 30 times now. Rated E. Like all of the stuff by tmk ;)

This Pleases Rehtt by Rehtt using @festivalofpudding ’s ao3 ;) ;). Okay, I said no particular order, but this is easily one of my favorite fics on the entire dang site. It’s HILARIOUS. If you like @rehttno , you’ll LOVE This Pleases Rehtt.

late night messages by hello_human. Okay, this one is great, and it’s a quick read. Rhett has a pastel porn blog on tumblr, and Link is a very big fan. Obviously E.

Your Letter by @afangirlsplaylist . This is a work in progress, but it’s SO good so far. Link is writing letters to people in his life or people from his past, addressing his feelings honestly in his journal.

Mixtape by @magicbubblepipe . Oh man, this is so sweet and I just smile every time I read it! Link accidentally gives Rhett a mixtape that has a love song on it… and things kind of get out of hand from there. Rated T.

Comin’ on Strong by @clemwasjustagirl . Oh man, if you dig Cowboy Rhett, you’ll love this angsty deliciousness. Rated E.

We All Scream for Ice Cream by @themouthking . Come on, this one is just hot. Rhett turns Link into one yummy ice cream sandwich. Rated E. Because tmk.

Criminal by @rhinkipoo . Oh gosh. Oh gosh oh gosh this is good stuff. If you’re down for some asshole!link, you’ll like this. He’s a jerk for reasons. Go read it.

Life After by FamousWolf. This one is just… wow. Just wow. Powerful. I don’t even know how to describe it. You almost have to just read it and go from there. It’s 22 chapters, so be ready to have a sleepless night taking a peek.

Sugar Daddy by @themouthking . older!link wakes up in his dorm room and sees younger!rhett. It gets interesting (and rhinky).

Behind Door No. 2 by @mythicalseries . Rhett takes his chances at a high school party, and Link has to decide if he wants to be more than just friends. This is a follow-up to a previous fic where Link made a different decision, so be sure to read both (even though they can be enjoyed separately).

A Part of Me by @clemwasjustagirl . This broke me and put me back together. Clemwasjustagirl has heard a lot of expletives from me about this one. It’s so wonderful.

Two Fronts by @remembertherandler , illustrated by @valvenaut . Oh gosh. This one made me cry and smile and everything else. It’s a work in progress, but seriously, go read it. I didn’t sleep because I wanted to finish this one.

Screw it and do it by @themouthking . One of my favorite epistolary fics EVER. So good.

Burning by @ratchetrhink. Rhett and Link go to Burning Man. It’s HOT. (Definitely E).

Salt, Tequila, Lime by @rhinkipoo . So delicious. It’s all about body shots.

Overwater by FamousWolf. Link brings Rhett on a tropical vacation and… I mean, this one is just plain amazing. They’re in paradise and it’s a wonderful story of their love.

Okay, that was already more than 20. Sorry about that. I seriously could list so many more, but any one of those would be a great place to start.

There are so many other amazing authors, fics, and everything else in this fandom, but I couldn’t list every single fic I love or we’d be here for the next decade, honestly. @emmammg , @one-true-houselight , @heatgeneratingtechniques , and @the-average-bear are a few of my other favorites that I would recommend!

As for a few of my own…

Suit and Jacket- have to shamelessly plug this one. It’s my baby. Basically, Rhett’s dad says he has to choose a serious career, and afraid of what that means for the plans he and Link have together, they run away to pursue their dreams. Set in 1994. Rated T. Illustrations by @emmammg

He Is the Same- another long fic I’m writing. This is a modern AU set in the present, but RandL are 24 years old. Rhett is an NBA star, Link is a famous rapper. They’re home for 3 weeks and reconnect after 6 years apart. Rated M (will be E, likely, before the end).

Mixed Media. I’m co-writing this with the lovely @themouthking and it’s all about Rhett and Link being rival art school students… who might kind of be more into each other than they’re willing to admit.

Overpriced Coffee. This is just pure fluff. I mean, it’s a little cheesy and overcaffeinated and very, very fluffy. But hey, manbun!rhett is in it.

Rhinky Bits. These are my short one-shots that are usually written for prompts. It’s just a collection of ficlets and if you want short, bite-sized reading, any one of these stories fits the bill there. If you have an idea for one, send it to my asks and I’ll add it to my doc of prompt inspiration that I pull from when I need a new topic!

Thank you for asking! Sorry if I overwhelmed you with too many suggestions… I just couldn’t narrow it down.

(Oh, and if I mentioned you and your name is different here than on ao3, let me know and I can tag you here. I just don’t know what everyone’s name here compared to ao3 is!)

Part one!

Part two!

Part three!

It’s several hours later and I’m shifting awkwardly from foot to foot outside the door of the bedroom I’ve been told is Simon’s. In my arms is a soft white towel and a toothbrush, as well as clean underwear – which one of Negan’s wives begrudgingly bestowed on me – and fresh clothes for the next morning.

“I know what you’re thinking.” The blonde girl – Amber, someone called her, I think - whispered as she handed me the fragile lace undergarments, her fair brow furrowed. “It’s disgusting. But we chose this for ourselves. He wasn’t lying.”

“I didn’t mean that I thought you were gross.” I replied, ashamed as I accepted the clothes. “I meant him.”

“What’s the difference, really?” She shrugged, moving her long hair over her shoulder. “You’re lucky he didn’t kill you for talking like that.”

“Does he usually do that?” I asked after her, but she’d already disappeared into her own bedroom.

“Okay, so…” I murmur to myself, rolling the toothbrush between my fingers. “Hi, Simon! I know we just met but I got in trouble with your rampantly-sexual boss and now I have to sleep with you.” I say to the closed door. “Not with you, just in the same room as you. But it’s cool because I don’t take up much room – I can fold up like an accordion and just, like, slot under your bed. You won’t even know that I’m there, I’m super quiet. Like a ninja-”

“Who’re you talking to?” Says a familiar voice and I give a spasmodic jerk, almost dropping the objects in my arms.

I read Honenuki got in through recommendation like todoroki and yaoyorozu why do you think he ended up in class B instead of A?

Oh, I’m pretty sure the sorting is somewhat casual - I say somewhat because I think the classes are made trying to keep the overall strength balanced between the two groups, but that’s about it? It’s not like class A is inherently better than class B just because they’re called “A”, it’s mentioned more than once during the story that the potential should be overall the same and the only difference is the battle experience class A has

Is your OTP really your OTP?

Before you read on, this is NOT and attack and I’m NOT starting a war. You can of course, freely state your opinion like I stated mine if you wish.

I’ve been wanting to make this post for a while now and I finally got the chance.

Is your otp really your otp? that’s a weird question, right?

Let’s look at the definition of ‘otp’ first: One True Pairing. Meaning your favorite combination of characters in a fandom.

Or something like that anyway.

I realise that in my fandom (Naruto) most people have watched it from a very young age. Most of us including myself grew up shipping the standard ships a.k.a SasuSaku and NaruHina.

And there’s nothing wrong with that really.

But I feel like for some of us, they were forced to, or should I say, scared of considering other pairs. And you know what, they have every right to because it’s known for a fact that there are many assholes and disrespectful people in this fandom (unfortunately).

The canon ships are SasuSaku, NaruHina, SaiIno and ShikaTema

But I think you all need to be reminded that just because it’s canon, you don’t need to approve of it. or follow it. or like it (as you can follow it, ship it or like it. it’s your choice).

Allow yourself to criticise these ships (and any other ship for the matter), to see their weaknesses and imperfections.

This might sound silly because doesn’t everyone know this already? That you can ship whichever pairing?

No, actually, not everyone does. How do I know? I was one of them.

I grew up ‘shipping’ the canon ships because everyone ships those right?!! Because they’re the actual thing! Because fairy-tales and whatnot. (note the sarcasm)

I remember when I first stumbled upon KakaSaku and was like, holy shit I never considered this, this is amazing (same thing happened to me with NaruSasu and GenIno but lets stick to KS as an example). It took a few months to become a hardcore KS shipper. To be honest, I was scared, like don’t fall for this ship, they’re not canon, just stick with SasuSaku they’re cute.

I think it’s safe to assume there’s at least one person like me out there thus why this post exists.

And here’s the thing! That’s not how it should be, you don’t need to stick with canon.

Don’t ignore the imperfects of the canon ship, allow yourself to spot them and think about them.

I always said SasuSaku were perfect and turned a blind eye onto all their imperfects because they’re canon but that’s the farthest away possible from the truth. In reality, I think it’s a really fucked up ship.

If you think about it, at first, yes they were cute, because even though he’s a bit of an asshole, he cared for his team and for Sakura. But when he left it all went downhill. He tried to kill her multiple times, he rejected her feelings multiple times (and even tho he did it harshly, he does have the right to speak of his feelings, he doesn’t love her and he shouldn’t have to, she can’t force him.) He was absent from her life for years and particularly between the ages of 13 and 17, this a period where you change the most. This is when you grow a personality. There’s no way you could actually ignore everything he did and go back straight away to being best friends. Actually, if we use it as a real life example, you can’t have barely any interaction with someone and have them constantly hurt you and still be in love with them. I know this because I’ve been in a similar situation as Sakura where my childhood crush and first love was harsh and mean and dare I say abusive to me. I did love him for years after that but he left and I didn’t see him for long. I moved on. I started to think seriously about how shitty he is. This is how feelings work. I began to hate him for all the shit he did to me.

How will you ever feel safe living with someone who once tried to kill you? it makes zero sense to me.

Besides, it wasn’t like Sakura actually had any thoughts behind loving Sasuke, she was a child who one day decided to make Sasuke their crush. Mostly because he’s cool. There is nothing wrong with that really, but it leaves many plot holes and unexplained things.

I allowed myself to question these things. How is my ship ‘perfect’ when all they did is hurt each other? How is being a single mother to a little girl whose father is always absent and doesn’t recognise her perfect?

And before someone jumps and says he’s away to protect them, whatever his reason is, it doesn’t change the reality of the situation. He doesn’t recognise his daughter. He doesn’t visit them or keep in touch with them. If he truly loved them he’d find a way to communicate the way he found a way to keep Naruto updated. Or at least found out from Naruto if they’re doing okay. Showed in any way that he cared.

People who truly love each other would go lengths to show it, to be there, to care and if you don’t think so then I don’t think you’ve ever experienced true love.

That said, this is NOT a post to convince you that SasuSaku sucks, this is my experience with it. I’m using them as an example, NOT to attack their shippers.

You don’t have to agree with me and I don’t need to agree with you. We’re all entitled to our own opinion.

As someone who claimed to be a hardcore SasuSaku shipper, it was difficult and scary for me to acknowledge these things. My Tumblr started as an SS blog after all.

And I made this post to let you know not to be so, that when you do acknowledge a ship’s flaws and imperfections next to their good aspects, you begin to realise truly if you like them or not. I repeat, this applies to every canon ship, SasuSaku is JUST an example.

I still ship SasuSaku, but the fan fiction SasuSaku, the one with plot and feelings. Canon SasuSaku makes me feel sick to my stomach. I think it makes Sasuke a bigger asshole and Sakura a pathetic person and I hate it. (I’m not saying you should too, this is just MY opinion. The canon ship makes me feel bad and leaves a bad taste.)

So maybe be brave and give yourself the chance to think about this. Even if you personally believe there’s no way you’ll ever stop shipping your ship, don’t be scared of allowing yourself to think and criticise and like new things. Do take the time to think about it; this will either help you discover you don’t in fact like this ship as much as you thought or confirm that they’re indeed your otp. So no harm done,  really.

Don’t be scared of the assholes of this fandom who’d try to bully you or make you feel bad. You’ll most probably have your ship’s fandom, they will be there for you.

Lastly, from my experience, KakaSaku pair aside, I can truly say that their fandom has the nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever met in my life and I swear joining this fandom has been the best decision I’ve ever made. Not only are they super sweet but also super talented and chill. They’re a creative bunch who make the best art and write the best fan fiction. I’m blessed there are so many talented people who create amazing content featuring my favorite ship.

whoa, that was long man, if you read the entire thing cheers to your patience. If you’re new in the KS fandom, message me we can fangirl together. If you’re a SasuSaku shipper and were by any chance offended by this, sorry, but this is my opinion. By all means, keep doing you and shipping this pair.

Hey... this is a bit awkward but... are you doing OK? I've noticed recently that your artwork seems a bit forced, like you're only posting things to please your followers and not because you want to. I'm a psychology student and I've struggled with depression for half my life and you're showing so many of the symptoms - lower mood, less energy, even your personality seems different from the way it used to be. (1/?)

Normally I would ignore something like this… but in this case this person is absolutely right. It’s about time that I told you the truth because you deserve to know.

I don’t know when it happened but I know that my mental health is deteriorating and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. I’ve lost interest in things I used to love, like drawing, and I’m afraid that if I get any more stressed with school I’ll have to drop my art class. If I drop art, I’m finished. It’s over. I can’t go to university if that happens and my entire life is basically destroyed. It sounds over dramatic but it’s the truth.

I’d been trying to draw and post things whenever I possibly could in case someone guessed that I was ill, I thought I could conceal it until I got better but I can’t do it anymore. I can laugh and smile and thank everyone for being so nice to me and make stupid comic strips and act like this is the best I’ve ever been but it’s just not working. In fact, deep down I constantly feel like I’m not good enough, not just for other people but that I’m not good enough for myself.

Honestly, all I’m ever trying to do is pull myself together and try to fight through it because I don’t want to be a burden to anyone. I feel like I’m being selfish whenever I tell anyone I have a problem, so I keep it bottled up until eventually I just break.

I’m not sure I can even deal with any of this any more because it’s getting worse every day, I feel fine and then I want to cry and I’m exhausted and I feel sick all the time and I’m so, so cold and it’s terrifying but I can’t save myself and I don’t know what to do. I’m sorry I had to let it all out at once and I just want you to know I’m sorry for everything.

anonymous asked:

the last time I went to a con for fun was maybe 3 years ago, and I saw pricing like $15-20 for an 11x17 print. I went to a little con yesterday and bought one 11x17 for $5, and another for $10. I just want to know if this is a trend other people have seen? why? I half wanted to tell them to not undervalue themselves haha... (I'm in Canada btw)

Nattosoup:  Unfortunately that seems to be the trend, at least here for me in the Southern US con circuit.  As more people decide to go print only, or do only fanart prints, the competition gets steeper- you can either strive to be the best at the show, or the cheapest.   This forces prices down for everyone, as it trains the customer base to demand less, and hold out for less, than what the piece is worth.

The solution is to break away from what everyone else is offering, and cut your reliance on fanart for the bulk of your sales.

Please don’t ever tell another artist at a con not to under value themselves- you do not know why they’re pricing what they price.  It comes off as condescending, even if you have the best of intentions.  The reality is- you don’t want to see prices driven down because it hurts the bottom line of every artist in the alley, and if you want to help change that, you can:

1. Sell more original pieces of art, featuring your characters, reminding customers that the artist alley should be full of creators, and should focus on promoting local and area artists.

2. Sell more traditional pieces of art, and help cement the idea that original art can be affordable and attainable.

3. Offer a commission bracket (even if it’s just the tiniest, quickest sketch) that is more affordable, to help cultivate a love of original art and start a commission culture in your area.

These are all things that I’ve instituted in my con circuit that have helped me out a lot.  Yes, it is a LOT more work, and it takes a long time, but it will inspire other artists to try the same, and will teach customers (in a kind way) to value artists.

Kiriska: The $15-20 range for 11x17 prints is still what I see most often. Occasionally I’ll see them priced lower, but it honestly isn’t that often. It could well be regional differences though. I mainly hit larger shows on the west coast and in Texas, which are highly competitive and usually feature artists from all over the US and Canada.

I think the size of these conventions and their regular staple of artists help stablise prices because when a significant percentage of an alley features uniform prices, newcomers to the same show can more comfortably charge those same prices and the customers at those shows more readily accept that price as what the work is worth. While at smaller local shows, if only a few artists charge in that range, other artists may gun for the quick sale by charging less, which may prompt that race towards the bottom.

But if you think your $15-20 price is fair, then stick to it.

The overhead on prints is low, so prices can go pretty low, but artists who charge too little for their work do themselves in in the end. Short term profit at a particular show won’t sustain someone in the long run. If they’re letting themselves earn pennies for their long hours of hard work, they’ll either burn out or raise their prices, eventually.

But as Becca says, it’s better not to assume anyone’s circumstances; after all, maybe the prices are only low for the short run, to cover an emergency or something. Just worry about yourself and your own work and prices. If you feel strongly about it, you can always tip them when purchasing their work, but there’s no need to lecture anyone about low prices.
