Okay, I just have to ask. What is so bad about the Danny translation? asking as someone who hasn't read the book.

First and foremost, he is on record saying that Hugo “was a terrible author” and Les Mis “needed cleaning up”. If that’s you’re opinion, that’s fine, but I really don’t think anybody should be going into a translation project with such a disrespect for the original author. To me, at least, he seems to think he knows what Hugo was trying to say better than Hugo himself did, and I just….ugh.

He has a great way with language, I admit, but he ruins that by cutting A LOT, even from major scenes. I would even go so far to say that it’s abridged. More importantly though, I think a lot of the romanticism and thematic choices went right over his head, and in focusing on the story he missed the message. And there are many times where he completely reverses the intended meaning of a sentence. Have another spreadsheet where he brutally murders poetry. At one point he calls Grantaire “Hephaestion” rather than Pylades, completely missing a pretty fucking obvious metaphor. Also farouche = “madly serious” apparently. And I don’t think Jehan ever got shot?

I could go on for hours (I really could), but the point is not only is Denny an idiot, but he’s that infuriating kind of idiot that thinks he’s The Shit.

(Plus he ruined my boyfriend Combeferre’s speech, so I’ve always been salty about that.)

“I’m gonna tell you a story. […] Like all great stories, it’s a love story. And like all great stories, it’s terribly tragic.”

Lee Pace as Calpernia Addams in Soldier’s Girl (2003).

Okay, I saw this comment on a Calzona thread board and it had me thinking of how much backlash Arizona got. Of course, what she did wasn’t the best thing. Even though she thought she was genuinely doing what she did out of the goodness of her heart, she still told a secret that wasn’t her’s to tell.

Now, I’m honestly not trying to throw anyone under the bus here, I’m just trying to compare specific reactions in terms of how Arizona’s character is handled by the writers.

Again, what Arizona did was wrong, but Bailey went to the point of reprimanding her, telling her that what she did was worth losing her job over. That definitely surprised me for Bailey to even bring that up because:

-in season 10, when Bailey literally injected hiv (I’m pretty sure) into a child *without* the parents’ consent behind their back, her job wasn’t questioned. At least, not that I recall. It was a happy celebration, and even though it worked, she still did something that was against the rules.

-Maggie in the first ep of the season freaking pinched a patient’s mother! Lol. Of course I thought she deserved it (and I admit it was kind of funny) but Maggie punched someone! Maggie was then praised! I praised her too haha, but still, her job was never put into question.

-Owen and Riggs. Do I even need to elaborate? They literally do whatever they want in the hospital and that also includes physically handling things and unprofessionally screaming in front of patients.

-I’m pretty sure Amelia drank on the job this season as well. Wasn’t that what was revealed in 12x09? I’m not sure, someone can correct me if I’m wrong. However, I don’t remember Amelia’s position being threatened over it, at least not on screen.

The only people I really see having their job threatened over doing something against the rules, are doctors who make a mistake/do something and it leads to a patient’s death. Obviously Arizona didn’t kill someone, but (again I’m biased because she’s my cupcake lol) I feel as though Bailey was harsh in bringing that up.

Again, I’m not trying to throw anyone under the bus, that’s not my intention. My point is showing how crappy and weird I think Arizona’s character is written. How she is treated compared to other characters. When she does anything that even slightly tips the scale of perfection, she is seen as the bad guy. Her actions, imo, are always going to somehow but see terrible, that if she isn’t perfect or always doing the right thing, she’s going to be in trouble or hated/disliked/disappointed by so many people. I just…yes, what Arizona did was wrong, but I just feel like she always unfairly gets so much heat compared to the other characters.

I don’t know if I got what I was trying to say across here, but I just needed to get that off my chest.

I just saw Utsumi translation of her interview. I swear if she damages Makoto and Harus relationship in anyway I'll unmentionable things!! UGH I'm sorry but I personally don't like her. Her favoritism isn't fair to the fans.

yeah she’s not great

i mean she’s good at comedy and slice of life stuff but she’s terrible at DRAMA
well kyoani is pretty terrible with drama in general but anyway

i will never understand utsumi like rin is her favorite character but she turned him from the best shota into the biggest pissbaby in the show, pissing around about 90% of his screen time

and the fact that she’s a fujoshi makes her bias even worse tbh

why do you always gotta — the ‘hey’ has never worked.

Dear Scott Gimple,

I am starting to think that my definition of a “Favourite Character” is nothing like the one you seem to be operating under.

See - Carol is my favourite and I love her probably a little too much, which means that given the chance I would give her (aka write up) some HAPPY goodness every once in a while.
She deserves and I am pretty sure everyone would agree with me when I say that she’s surely earned a few nice things in her life after all the messed up stuff this show (you and others) has put her through.

You say that she is your favourite but the list of “let’s punch Carol in the heart awfulness" just keeps getting longer;

- Ed existing
- Sophia missing
- Sophia dying and then Sophia dying again right in front of HER!
- Trapping her and almost leaving her to die in the tombs
- Losing her friends - Jackie, Amy, Lori and Andrea
- Giving her two more children to lose
- Rick banishing her and making her cry
- The Grove and Grady
- The epitome of Ed 2.0 reminder in Pete ‘porch dick’
- Sam being so darn attachable and also ‘killable’
- Morgan and his guilt inducing “all life is precious” ways!
- Separating her from Daryl every darn Season

You know what I am saying…You KNOW!

Carol is a great, amazingly complex, inspirational, kick ass, beautiful character - you got me there!
And yes this is a show about terrible things and no happy endings BUT come on, somewhere in the middle of all this death, destruction and annoying man pain, you could write a scene where she takes a breather, maybe shares a moment with someone else that is about how she is, how she feels about things…
A scene where someone asks her about how she’s holding up.
A scene where someone says or shows in some way that she is appreciated, noticed…loved!
Just because….

She’s done enough crying. Made too many sacrifices.
Made one too many hard calls and been undervalued, underestimated and unappreciated….

Good news though - you Scott Gimple have the power to change all of this because you just happen to be the writer and showrunner of the world Carol lives in…
You can write her a happy moment - at least one tiny one!
She’s your favorite character and your favourite actress after all.

Plus you already know she can pull it off!

I have faith in you ❤️
