this is such a short and simple moment

I understand it’s Shoot week, and I’d really like to carve out some time to write for myself this weekend. A little short on ideas at the moment, so I’d be open to filling a prompt or two.

In the mood to keep it simple and sweet. Think acts of casual intimacy, like cuddling on a rainy morning, reading together, washing each other’s hair, or holding hands (admittedly I took some liberties with that last prompt).

While I don’t fill everything, I’m always pleased with the possibilities you open up, so if you have a thought, please drop by!

Fortune cookies written by neural network

I’ve been training a neural network (based on open-source char-rnn) on a variety of datasets, including recipes, Pokemon, knock-knock jokes, pick up lines, and D&D spells

The neural network trains itself by looking at chunks of text from the training dataset and trying to predict what comes next. Then, when you give it a bit of seed text (maybe even a single letter), it generates text by predicting what comes next. It does best with short, simple phrases because it only looks at a few tens of characters at a time. Also, its grammar isn’t always the best. So, fortune cookie messages would seem like a perfect task for a neural network - but I had the darndest time getting fortunes out of the neural network.

The problem is the dataset. At the moment, there aren’t that many unique fortunes you can find in a cookie, maybe only a few hundred or so in common enough use that you can find them online. Intrepid blog reader Kiwi Carlisle found pretty much all of them, and very kindly gave them to me as neural network food.

But annoyingly, the neural network went straight from nearly complete incomprehensibility:

A pleasant and on your pirents.
You will will have life, so the right thing.
The man where you wornd with a wind love to be procers.
Life is finally gime.
Hand is always on happiness.
The wind a fail is hondow on your parsone think you want.
A pleace khom yourself of ore cose from cowings are sheeping.
There is no right, don’t surprise
People will come true.

to word-for-word plagiarism of the complete input dataset of fortunes.

Finally, I managed to stymie it by giving it an even shorter-than-usual memory: it can only look at 35 characters at a time, which is shorter than your average cookie fortune. That finally prevented the neural network from memorizing the dataset, forcing it to come up with something unique.

And it was unique, all right.

First thing I learned is that for some reason the neural network likes fortunes with birds:

You cannot become better than a bird in the present.
Follow activaty will dramatically impossion bird work.
Mife is like a good listener in the mind of a flying birds.
Whange you have a lifetine of the flying birds.
A short pencil is usually better than a bird on the future.

It also is significantly more pessimistic than your average cookie fortune:

Now is the time to go ahead and not prepare to live.
Never understand.
Never upset the friends
Love will diss your changes.
Hell! It’s the onset of a friendship
Do not have a peaceful place where you will feel better.
There’s no success and friendship.
You cannot love life until you live the life you don’t good luck.

And it is full of impressive absolutely ancient wisdom:

A short simples are the suction for you.
Don’t love light, you will not always a pat.
Whale success is no high-lore will become tree.
Someday everything will be happy and proven a poet.
People are savituded.
Carve your name on your parents.
Be on the finest men like the floor.
You will make mead.
Our deeds determine up, the weather is wonderful.
Po Says: Pandan, like eating bamboo, but I prefer on the horizon.
Better ask doods when you can do it, you will never be disappointed.
Feep is never conquered by hate.

Wishing I was… dry jumping with Peter in my room after school and we were trying to be quiet because my parents were home

“Peter..” You moaned his name out, rolling your hips down harder on his. His gloved hand began to tug at the bottom of your shirt, causing you to pull pack. You looked at his swollen lips and the half pulled mask that was stretched over his head. You lifted your hands, pulling it completely off. Peter’s eyes were trained on you.

“We have to keep quiet. My parents are home.” You whispered, moving your hands to the back of his neck before tangling your fingers with the curls there.

“I can keep quiet.” He stated, reconnecting his lips with yours. Your tongues met once again, dancing with each other, his hands coming to move your hips down upon his. The sensation you felt drove you crazy. You wanted more. You wanted more contact and less layers. Your nails pulled at his curls before making your hips grind down harder. You smiled into the kiss when he groaned into the kiss, his fingers digging into your hips harder, making them roll down on him harder. You pulled away, your hips stilling.

“I thought you said you could keep quiet.” You teased. He rolled his eyes playfully before beginning to nip at your neck, his hands making your hips move back and forth again. You bit down on your lips, enjoying the way every time your rolled your hips, his cock would harden more. The feeling of his now fully hard dick moving almost in between your folds (if it weren’t for the pajama shorts and underwear). You mewled, throwing your head back when what you would assume was the tip of his dick came in some contact with your clit. Your hands flew to his knees, causing your chest to push out a little, granting him access to the tops of your boobs. He began leaving a trail of love bites over them, and usually you would worry about covering them but at the moment you didn’t care. The motion was so simple but it felt so good. Back and forth, back and forth. You swirled your hips in an eight figure now, feeling his dick occasionally, teasing both you and Peter a little before going back to straddling it again and grinding on top of it.

Your eyes fluttered close, enjoying the feeling. If Peter hadn’t groaned again, you would have gotten carried away. You tugged on his hair once again before reconnecting your lips with his. He pulled away, but now before having his bottom lip held in between your teeth. You pushed him back by the shoulders, encouraging him to lay back on your bed. He fell back with a loud thud.

“Ouch.” His hand lifted from your hip to go and rub at the back of his head. You moved your right hand to move the big calculus textbook from underneath him. His head turned to see your homework everywhere. You moved your pencils to the floor so you know they couldn’t hurt him. You were about to go down and kiss him again until he killed the mood.

“You got number seven wrong.”

“I’m Nino, and it’s time for you to start making some new friends dude.”

I decided to make a screenshot redraw of one of my favorite moments in ML. It was short, and simple, but set the precedent of something very essential to the show.

Kindness is key, loneliness is painful, and reaching out can sometimes be the most important thing you do. Because in this moment Nino didn’t have any other reason to reach out to Adrien besides the fact that he saw that he was being genuine and that he was lonely. It was to be kind, and in the end they both earned their best friend because of it.

Be kind. It’s worth doing.

Gotta Shave this Shit

Title: Gotta Shave this Shit

Characters: Negan x You/Reader

Synopsis: Negan wants to rid his beard and wants you to help.

Warnings: NSFW, swearing, Negan himself is a warning lol

Note: ‘Cause I think beardless Negan needs more love. Honestly feeling meh about this but I couldn’t get the idea out of my mind. Hope you guys would still enjoy!

“You busy tonight, sweetheart?”

It was only when Negan’s shadow loomed over your figure on the couch that you looked up and realized that it was you he was talking to. Even after noticing how Negan’s eyes were glued on you and you alone, you still bothered to look around the lounge area to make sure that you weren’t hallucinating. You weren’t a new wife, in fact, you were the third one (out of six) but you were aware that Negan has his favorites. Sherry and Amber topped Negan’s list but the other wives still get their share of Negan’s time.

You’ve had your moments with Negan too, but they weren’t as much as the rest so you assumed that you were that girl— one who was easily forgotten. It was really hard to believe that Negan was really talking to you.

Spanish Tenses

An anon asked me to explain the differences for the Spanish tenses so I’ll try to make this post as short as possible.

Indicative mood expresses actual situations and facts.
It parts in 2, simple tenses and perfect tenses:

SIMPLE

Present is used to express:

  • the actions that take place at the moment of speaking
  • frequent actions/habits
  • future actions

Imperfect is used to express:

  • an action that started in the past without being said if it has been finished or not.
  • past habits

Preterite is used to express completed actions from the past.

Future expresses action that will take place in the future

Conditional is used to express something that isn’t certain. (similar to would and could)

PERFECT

Present perfect is used to express:

  • an action that started in the past and it’s still going on
  • an action that took place in the past but it can repeat any time in the future

Past perfect is used for an action that was completed before another, both taking place in the past.

Preterite perfect is used for past actions that were completed before another past action. Usually it is used with apenas (barely) and it appears in literature.

Future perfect is for actions that will have taken place before another future event.

Conditional perfect is used for actions that would have been completed in the past. (But these actions aren’t because something stopped them, like that moment when you would have asked your crush out but you got scared)

Present Progresive Tense
This tense is for actions that are taking place in the moment you speak. (I’m talking to you now).

Subjunctive mood is for uncertain, possible, desired actions

SIMPLE

Present subjunctive is used after clauses that express intent, possibility, hope, wish, doubt.

Imperfect subjunctive is used just like the present subjective but the main verb is in the preterite, imperfect or conditional tense.

PERFECT

Present perfect subjunctive is used to describe
past actions that are connected to the present
actions that are expected to be done by a point in the future

Past perfect subjunctive is used to express hypothetical situations in the past, past conditionals and past actions that preceded other past actions.

Imperative mood is used to express orders.

If i have any mistakes please tell me, I’m not a native so i might have said something wrong.

He drove like nothing could stop him, the roads beckoned him closer and there was no end.
No end to the long night, the night that started at 2am and inevitably reached the early morning and the sunrise. The night we all drove around high off of teenage rebellion and green. The night we all confessed to each other our fears and our secrets and everything we were told to keep hidden away from the world, from everyone in it, but what ended up stumbling out of our throats into the night air.
That night, I told him how happiness was something temporary for me. Found in moments, and in people, but fading away as quickly as it came. I told him how I coated my face in powders and mascara to feel decent, to feel pretty. How without it looking at myself was a certain type of smothering pain, one I couldn’t explain.
He told me of acceptance. He told me how hard it was for him to come to the conclusion of loving himself, how hard it was for him to truly be okay with himself and everything he was. How his father had left him with bruises and his other relatives had left him with kids they weren’t capable of taking care of, due to their lack of reality lost in other types of powders, ones white and found on streets. He told me loving myself was the only way I would find real happiness, not in moments, but in everyday and in simple things. A permanent happiness rather than a temporary.
In this moment, sometime in the AM, I realized he was right. I couldn’t find happiness in moments, people, materialistic’s, or anything other than myself.
I took his hand and I let him guide me into the light, into the morning.

Coffee Confessions - Chris Evans Imagine

This is the cheesiest title but whatever XD

Summary: An ideal fourth date in February? Simple. A cup of coffee and maybe a confession or two that Chris has been keeping from you for long enough. He couldn’t wait another moment to tell you that he saw as the stars aligning for him; the moment he met you.

People: Chris / You

“Now, remind me again why we are doing this?”

“Because! Come on, what’s the worst that could happen?”

“I give you something that you’re allergic to and you die on my account and your fans stampede to my house and then they kill me too.”

“You’re quite creative…”

You shrugged and looked down at your dirty boots, “Some would call me cynical.” Chris smiled and just shook his head laughing quietly to himself. “Well, cynically creative it is then.”

A small smile on your face. He just grins down at you then looks up at the menu.“Okay, well I’m only allergic to two things; Shrimp, and Cats. So if you find a shrimp cocktail on the Starbucks menu, I suggest you divert to another food.”  A giggle flew out of your mouth, making the two dimples on the apples of your cheeks strike Chris’s eye. He looked in your direction as you stared up at the menu above the Barista when he saw the beauty next to him chuckling at his allergies. Chris looked at you, with a spark in his eyes, “What!”

“Shrimp? Really? Interesting…”

“Oh, well Ms. Perfect, what allergies do you have?”

“I’m allergic to men who wear t0o much Axe body spray.” Chris bellowed out a laugh and didn’t receive a wink of attention from anyone inside the cramped Starbucks.

It was a busy Monday morning in Manhattan, people didn’t have time to glare at the happy couple on a weird ‘eight in the morning on Monday’ date.

Slinging his arm over your shoulder, Chris brought you closer as soon as you two finally reached the register. Suddenly it felt a hundred degrees hotter in here than it did a second ago.

When you ordered for Chris you decided to get him an Americano iced, with milk and one sugar. Adding a cake pop to your order, much to Chris’s amusement. He knew that you’d steal it from him later.

“I’ll have a Venti, Iced Caramel Macchiato with skim milk, and one slice of lemon bread to go, please.”

Your mouth must’ve hit the dirty Starbuck’s floor once he finished his order. You looked at Chris and saw he was amused by your expression when he glanced down at you, out of the corner of his eye.

“How the hell did you know that was what I liked?”

“Babe, we’ve gone on three dates and I’ve known you for what, a year now? If it’s mid-spring, and you aren’t wearing a jacket it’s an Iced Caramel Macchiato with skim milk, but you hate the thickness of regular milk, and lemon bread because it’s fucking awesome. No matter how much hate lemon bread gets, you’d defend it to your last dying breath.”

“I just don’t understand why this generation has no respect for lemon bread. It’s disgraceful!” Smiling down at you, he rests his head on top of yours as you two wait for your orders to be filled in the sea of busy Bostonian’s.

“So, what does your daily horoscope say today…” He peaked over and smiled, leaning back so people couldn’t get a good look at his face. He didn’t want to be recognized on your date, he wanted it to be just you two.

“What does it say?”

“Well, Miss. Aquarius, you are having a five-star day- and hey! So am I, the Gentle and Genuinely Handsome Gemini, if I may add.” Rolling your eyes, you put your hand on your hip, rolling your hand forward for him to continue. “It says; Wait for opportunities to come your way. You are waiting for a sign but you will not receive one unless you shoot for your goals. You are going to cross paths with…” He pauses for a second and smiles, leaning back as he looks at you. “What? I’m gonna cross paths with what?”

“The love of your life.” He says quietly.

You stopped for a second, and don’t even care when your name is rung out, “Order for Steve and order for James.”

Your eyes are wide, even while Chris moves to grab both your orders, “It says that?” Chris nodded, bringing you the lemon bread and iced drink.

“Yeah…”

“Well, what does your’s say?”

Chris sighed in content, pulling the door to the streets of Pant Suits and Cabbie’s yelling at one another. As the harsh winter air hit your faces, the breeze takes your hair back. Brushing the curly strands off of your shoulders that we’re covered in a simple black peacoat. “It said, ‘Gemini, you have already met your one and only. Don’t let them walk away without telling them how you feel or it will haunt you. You’ll regret it the moment they turn away into another lover’s arms.’”

Smiling down at you while you two start the short walk back to his apartment, Chris couldn’t help but a breath escapes him at the side of your perfect, pinched pink cheeks and puckered lips from being chapped from the vicious blowing winds.   “Well do you think your horoscope is true?”

“Hell yeah…” Chris answered you coolly, although a wave of anxiety hit him when he paused for a second before shooting a glance at you and quietly repeating you back your question, “Do you?”

You don’t need to look up from your lemon bread to know he’s watching you, you could just feel the love of his eyes bearing deep into your heart, making it pump blood faster every time those blue eyes were looking in your direction. With a small sip of your drink to let the bread go down easily, you reply confidently to Chris, not even skipping a step. “Fuck yeah.”

Smiling at you no longer feels like enough for him, so letting all fucks fly into the wind, he stood in front of you and bent down to land an impassioned kiss on your stinging lips that now just felt numb. Numb with a bee’s sting of love.

Chris was kissing you at the traffic light, not bothering to worry whether the world was watching or not. When the walkers started across the street, your lips parted from each other and Chris guided you along, letting you lean on him as a bit of support. Still in shock of the electricity that now coursed through your veins bled straight into your heart. Your brain was a haze by the moment you two just shared with a thousand other people on the corner of Village Street.

Together, you walk silently now, no longer feeling the need to fill the silence. The sky was blue and the sun had risen high above you two. Feeling his hand reach yours, you hooked your fingers with his and felt them grasp stronger, intertwining his fingers with yours. Chris was clutching onto you as if he was gonna lose you in the bustling crowd. Suddenly it felt like your safety came before his own on the bustling streets.

After a while, when you finally reached his apartment, you two sat down and relax for a second with Dodger begging to play fetch with his favorite toy, a rubber turtle that didn’t bounce that bad but let Dodger get in a bit of a good exercise until you’d take him down to Berrington Park.

Chris suddenly gives you the look of the joker, with a wide grin that could almost appear as sinister.  He was too cute to be sinister, though.  You took a bite of the lemon bread that was barely left. You had one, maybe two bites before it’d be done. Scarfing it down in what you knew would be very unflattering paparazzi photos soon.

“You made those horoscopes up, didn’t you?” Smirking, Chris nods, taking an unauthorized sip of your macchiato. Not that you cared or anything.

“What did yours really say, Chris?”

“It said…I’d  fall in love with a lemon head.” Smacking him on the arm, you giggle before surprising him and bringing him forward with your hand on the back of his head.

“Your such a clown sometimes, Christopher.”

“Some call it more sarcastic or dry.”

A soft smile fell onto your lips as you press them barely to Chris’s. He felt like a feather now laid on his lips. Setting the two drinks on the coffee table, you just barely mumbled into his kiss as those large, beautiful, slightly chapped  lips brought you in, “The Sarcastically Dry Comedian it is then.”

Eurydice, Eat Your Heart Out (Adrino Percy Jackson AU)

In the dark of Cabin 10, staring up at the roof of his bunk, Adrien could hear the distant plucking of a harp as waves lapped lazily against the shoreline.

All things considered, it wasn’t surprising that he was having trouble sleeping; less than twenty-four hours earlier his father’s limo was nearly destroyed by a rampaging Cyclops that the middle-aged fashion mogul dispatched with a quick flick of a sword he drew from seemingly nowhere. From there, it was somewhat of a blur of packing, private jet rides, and clandestine car trips to the sunny shores of Long Island, New York, a silver pen containing the only means of protection he had in case other monsters attacked.

Monsters.

He could still scarcely believe it. If someone had told him that he was the product of an affair between his mother and the Greco-Roman goddess of love and beauty a few days ago, he would have been dialing Gorilla’s number as quickly as he could while backing away from them. Now, surrounded by dozens of half-siblings he never knew existed, Adrien didn’t quite know what to make of his current situation. He still thought he was going to wake up, home in Paris, and the whole thing would have been just a fever dream brought on by bad cheese; the attack, the journey, the music-

Sitting up in bed, Adrien strained his ears over the snoring of his bunkmate to hear the almost aimless melody that meandered its way across the waves. It was a song that sounded so familiar; like the chorus to something he had heard on the radio years ago. It couldnt’ve been coming from far, judging by the way it cut through the sound of twenty-five teenagers’ beauty sleep, so, clutching his pen and carrying his sneakers, Adrien tip-toed towards the door as quietly as possible, stepping out into the warm Long Island night.

Are You Two Dating Now?

“Love? Can you grab the plates?” Joe calls out, glancing up from the food he’s cooking.

“Yup.” Y/N closes her computer, jumping up from the couch, she crosses the floor, her hand sliding along Joe’s back as she passes him, reaching for the plates. “Smells delicious.”

“We went Italian tonight!” He replies proudly, smiling over his shoulder at her.

“Always wanted to go to Italy,” She sighs, pausing briefly, plates in hand.

“I’ll take you one day.”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep, Sugg.”

“Me? Never.” He chuckles, wrapping an arm around her waist as he pulls her to his side, placing a kiss on her temple. “This is one I will keep. I’ll get you to Italy, Y/N. Just you wait.”

“Mhm, sure.” She rolls her eyes, placing the plates on the counter. “Can we eat now?”

“Just have to dish it out. Go take a seat.”

“How did I get so lucky?” Y/N asks, sitting at the work top on the other side, “I have an amazing best friend who cooks me delicious food and promises a trip to Italy.”

“I know, I’m pretty amazing.” Joe answers, winking at her as he places a plate of food in front of her. “Enjoy!”

The little moments between them were so normal now, that they never paid attention to them.

Of course, the boys had noticed, wondering why the two best friends acted like a couple without actually dating, but Y/N and Joe just shrugged and said it was who they were.

How they acted with each other was just who they were, it felt right for them. They never considered that they might have real feelings, they were just part of each other’s lives, and it was left at that.

“You ready for bed?” Joe asks a couple hours later, looking down at Y/N, who’s practically asleep on his lap.

“Hmm, think so.” She mumbles, yawning lightly. “Unless you wanna finish the movie?”

“The movie will be there tomorrow, love. Let’s go to bed.”

Nodding, she sits up, stretching. “Your couch is too comfy. And so are you.”

“My beds much comfier though,” He tells her, holding out a hand to help her up.

“I know. I always sleep better in it than my own,” Y/N laughs leaning against him as he leads her up to his room.

Once they’re in the bedroom, she walks over to Joe’s closet, grabbing a random shirt before stripping out of her own clothes, slipping it over her head a moment later.

“Here,” He’s waiting for her outside of the closet, a warm facecloth in his hand, and she takes it with a smile, beginning to wipe the make up off of her face.

“Oh shit,” Joe curses softly, pausing in his movements of pulling the blankets back on the bed.

“What’s wrong?”

“I forgot to send an email. It’s pretty important, too.”

“Then go do it, and then come to bed.” Y/N tells him, walking over to wrap her arms around him, looking up at him. “You won’t relax until you do it.”

“Sorry,” He smiles sheepishly down at her, one hand reaching up to brush the hair out of her face, “I know you were all ready for bed.”

“It’s fine.” Lifting up, she places a simple kiss on his lips, “Go write your email. I’ll be here when you’re back.”

“Thanks, love.”

Neither think of the kiss that just occurred, another moment that just felt right for them.

And when Joe slips into bed beside her a short while later, he pulls her close, kissing her forehead softly.

“Night.” She mutters sleepily.

“Goodnight, Y/N.”

And when he kisses her good morning, they don’t think anything of it either.

The shift in their relationship simply happened, and both accept it without saying anything.

“The boys are coming over for brunch,” Joe tells her, his fingers running along her arm.

“Then we should probably get up and get dressed.”

“Probably.”

Yet they remain cuddled up in bed for a while longer, only dragging themselves out when Jack texts them to say that he and Josh will be there in ten minutes.

Y/N tosses her hair into a messy bun before pulling on her pants from last night, leaving Joe’s shirt on. He smiles over at her when she appears downstairs, commenting how nice she looks in his stuff.

“I should steal it more often.” She teases before going to answer the door as the boys arrive.

By now, the boys were used to the two acting like a couple, even if they didn’t really understand the relationship between the two, so no one batted an eye when they saw her wearing his shirt, or when Joe’s eyes followed her around the room.

And even when she wrapped her arms around him from behind, leaning against him while she chatted casually with Jack, the boys just took it in stride.

It wasn’t until they were cleaning up from brunch that the boys grew confused.

“You don’t have to do that, love.” Joe says to Y/N, trying to pull her away from the sink where she’s doing dishes.

“It needs to be done,” She laughs, flicking bubbles at him.

“Make one of them do it, then.” He grins, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her closer.

“Do you not want clean dishes?” She asks, her arms moving up to around his neck.

“Hmm, fair point.” Joe answers, leaning down to kiss her gently. “At least let me help?”

“Fine, you can dry.” Y/N tells him, lifting up to kiss him once more before she turns back to the sink.

The group of boys all stare over at them in shock and confusion, exchanging glances.

“Okay, what the fuck?” Caspar finally says, drawing the attention of the couple who aren’t a couple.

“What’s wrong?” Joe asks, taking the plate from Y/N, drying it.

“When did…that happen?” Conor asks, gesturing between the two.

“When did what happen?” Y/N glances over at Joe, but he shrugs, placing the plate onto the counter.

“You two just kissed.” Jack tells them, “I mean, we get you two are touchy and she wears your clothes and stays the night…but, you kissed.”

“Well, at least we know Jack can see.” Joe laughed, “But what’s the problem?”

“Are you two dating now?” Josh asks them, glancing between the two.

Y/N and Joe share a look, a silent conversation happening between them before she smiles, placing a soapy hand on his cheek as she reaches up to kiss him again.

“Suppose we are.”

“Guess so.” Joe shrugs, smiling fondly down at her.

“You two are so bloody confusing…” Oli mumbles, shaking his head.

Yet to Y/N and Joe, it all makes perfect sense.

Because it’s just who they are.

Part Four: Enriching the World Through Dialogue

We often think that world-building must be done through narration, that we only showcase our world and our world’s potential through the use of long paragraphs detailing the style of the carts and the architecture of the city, the clothing and hairstyles, and on and on with all the details our hearts desire. What we often forget is how tiring long paragraphs of these kinds of observations can be. Dialogue can be an extremely useful tool for introducing information about your world without feeling constrained to the narrative voice of the piece.

What’s normal and what’s not.

Have you ever been talking to someone and you mention a store you frequent or the flock of turkeys that forced you to stop on your way across town, and the other person gives you the blankest stare. Experiences across the world–even across town–are not the same (just to state the obvious for a minute). The variations found in everyone’s lives can become fantastic opportunities when you put two people from different places together because they will automatically be more likely to point out differences and ignore similarities.

Acknowledging things that are common vs. uncommon in a setting may not seem particularly important, but think of it this way: You’re writing a world entirely different than ours, which means that we can’t imagine all the things that are possible within this new world. How are we to know when something out of the ordinary presents itself to the characters unless the characters let us know? The way your characters talk about certain aspects of the world will help give the audience a better understanding of what normal life is like. To set up something scary and unnatural for the world, we need to know what the opposite looks like.

Remember that with movies, we can tell what the focus is and what the movie considers important by how much time is spent on/with it. Utilize the same concept to create the contrast of ordinary and extraordinary to help your audience easily make those distinctions. Of course, it’s not that you shouldn’t mention normal things at all, but that neither a full page conversation nor a full paragraph of description needs to be given to them. Draw attention to the extraordinary, coax it to the forefront.

Use dialogue to illustrate these little nuances. Have characters remark on things to each other and tell each other short stories that give the audience context. This is especially useful when you have a collection of character who aren’t from the same place. Regional variants on food, architecture, creatures, and customs give you great opportunities to build your world through quick moments between characters. “It’s strange to see all these grey horses. Most of ours are brown.” Even something as simple as this shows your audience that there’s more out there than what’s on-screen at the moment.

There are plenty of times when working these kinds of details into narration feel awkward. Remember that you have this other tool–dialogue–to utilize, too. Working it into conversation can work in a dynamic way not only building your world, but also your character. More on that another day.

Mechanics of the world.

When writing in worlds with some really complex systems like magic, or a very deeply developed set of cultures, religions, and all the rest that come with a whole new world, it can be very tempting to use our characters’ mouths to try to explain it to our readers. It’s a fantastic opportunity, especially when we’re able to put characters into a situation where they can ask, “Why? Why isn’t it working? Why did that happen? Why can’t we use that idea?” These platforms for information are so convenient, but without keeping a couple of things in mind when crafting these conversations, diary entries, letters, and other forms of communication, they can become info-dumps just as easily as narration can.

Keep voice in mind. Whether you’re trying to convey how something works through a written dialogue or a spoken one, your words are not actually yours. They belong to the character speaking them. Make sure you keep them in mind. You need to be using their vocabulary, their opinions, and most of all, their understanding of the world and how it functions. Just because we–as writers–know the very specific inner workings of why one magic works with another but doesn’t work with this other one doesn’t mean that your character does. Yes, it’s that very thing that enables us to set up these “why” scenarios, but it’s the same reason why answering those questions cannot and should not be a regurgitation of your planning notebook.

In a video game, we know the mechanics programmed into the server that allows for this or doesn’t allow for that, and we can explain it to each other, but our characters only know what they can see and observe through the technology available to them according to the time period of their story. Remember that. Remember that you can’t just have a character say, “I can’t cast that anymore today because I’m out of fifth level spells.” It needs to use words and an understanding of the world that are true to them, not true to us.

Lastly, with world mechanics and dialogue, keep it short, light, and in character. The more time you dwell on whatever it is you’re trying to explain, the more likely it will become uncharacteristic both for the speaking character and for the story’s tone. It’ll bog down a scene faster than a sinkhole in the road. Giving these kinds of world-building details are best done by showing the system in action rather than trying to explain it. Dialogue is the easy way out in this case. Challenge yourself to create scenarios that force your characters to use and showcase the abilities of the various systems in your world.

Next up: Character-building through dialogue!

This is how he would look at you when he catches you putting on chapstick or something at a red light. He would be in the middle of answering the question you just asked but it would drift off to him just kinda staring at you. He would just sit there for a moment admiring how you make simple acts like putting on chapstick, turning the dial on the radio or even just putting on sunglasses look so damn adorable. His little moment of admiration would be cut short by honking coming from behind him and you shaking your head laughing as he snaps back to reality.

Creepypasta #1114: Ducky

Length: Short

The first and most important role of a toy, any toy, is to take care of their child.

Little Leslie was enjoying her bath upstairs by herself. The novelty of unsupervised baths had not worn off on her, and she spent every possible moment splashing and playing with her toys. She knew, of course, that many toys did not make good bathtime playmates, but her favorite and oldest bathtime buddy was Ducky. Ducky had been among the first words she could say, and so had been named simply.

Being a simple rubber duck meant Ducky was sturdy. His smiling face easily survived the younger years where “playtime” meant grabbing hold and slamming him over and over into the water, the wall, and the side of the tub. Ducky never minded, and looked forward to bringing her joy however he could. His patience was well-rewarded, and now playtime included deep sea dives for brilliant fish, exploring underwater caves, and being a boat.

Tonight Ducky and Leslie were swimming with the mermaids in the Specific Ocean, when something unexpected interrupted. Ducky, above water that was filled with bubbles, couldn’t see the tentacle slither up from the drain and wrap itself around Leslie’s leg. He could certainly tell though when it yanked her down, her unexpected gasp of surprise followed by her head sinking below water and her hand releasing Ducky.

Ducky, ever the dutiful toy, quickly followed her under, diving beneath the bubbles. Shortly after, Leslie emerged, gasping and quickly jumping out of the tub. Leslie’s screams brought her mother running, who found her daughter dripping water all over the living room as she sprinted away from the bathroom.

“There’s a monster in the tub!”

More puzzled than alarmed, Mom allowed Leslie to drag her into the bathroom where puzzlement quickly gave way to fright. Draped over the edge of the tub was what appeared to be a thin black tentacle, the torn side of it dripping an inky blackness into the now cloudy water. And there, floating in the middle of the carnage, sat a smiling Ducky, pleased to have done his job.

The first and most important role of a toy, any toy, is to take care of their child.

“It upsets me to think this is our last day together for months.” I confessed to Shawn, who was currently laying on the couch with his head in my lap, engrossed in a movie. My words made him turn his head to look at me. He looked up at me through beautiful brown eyes.

“Then just don’t think about it and you won’t be upset.” he said with a shrug. Oh what a wonderful solution you have there, Shawn. I wish it were that easy.

“It’s just not that easy. You’re going on a world tour, I’m going to college. You have other friends, Shawn, I don’t. All I have is you.”

“You have friends other than me. There’s no way I’m your only friend.” he teased.

“I have acquaintances, not friends.” I informed. “These acquaintances also won’t be going to the same school as me.”

“Nobody else could get into the school you’re going to because not everyone can be a fucking mega genius like you.” Shawn said, sounded irritated.

“Is that any way to talk to your best friend who made sure you passed physics and graduated?” I asked, wiggling my eyebrows at him. His facial expression softened at my tone and he no longer seemed angry. We sat in silence for another hour or so, long enough for the movie to be over. Shawn’s friend had suggested the movie and it sucked, if I’m being honest. We decided on watching The Notebook after that, one we both always loved.

We sat next to each other, my head on Shawn’s shoulder but in a platonic, nothing-more-than-friends way. It had gotten to the scene where Allie was kissing ice cream off of Noah’s lips and I felt Shawn laughing. I pulled away from his shoulder to look at him.

“What is it?” I queried, not being able to avoid the smile spreading across my lips from hearing his laugh.

“Wouldn’t it be amazing to be that in love with somebody?” he said. It made my heart sink because, until just now, I had managed to put away my thoughts about how in love I am with Shawn. I had hoped that just this one time we could be together without my thoughts interrupting what should only be friendship with Shawn. My throat felt dry and my eyes stung after he said the words. It was just a simple question, but to me it showed that he wasn’t in love with anyone, including me.

I managed to nod my head then scoot a few inches away from Shawn. I continued watching the movie, not being able to help but imagine Shawn and I being that in love with each other. Sadly, the love was only one sided. We definitely loved each other, but he only loved me as a best friend and I loved him with all I had in me. I realized in this moment I should have told him a long time ago. I should have confessed my feelings because now, we won’t see each other for months so it’s too late.

Shawn and I had planned to spend the whole day together but once the movie was over I felt too lost in my thoughts to stick around.

“I guess I should head home now.” I said softly, starting to stand up.

“What? Why?” Shawn asked, sounding concerned. I looked back at him and he looked hurt that I wanted to leave so early. “I thought you were staying all day?” I wanted to stay, I wanted it more than anything but I couldn’t focus on being his best friend when I was too busy thinking about being his girlfriend. My face felt hot and my eyes stung again, I could feel that they were tearing up. “Hey, what’s wrong?”

Shawn grabbed my hand and rubbed his thumb over mine. I desperately tried to keep the tears in but I couldn’t help one from falling. A single tear ran down my left cheek and I wiped it away quickly.

“Y/N, please tell me what’s wrong? Did I do something or say something? Come here.” Shawn begged. He lead me to the couch and I sat across from him with my legs crossed.

This was it, this is when I have to tell him. I thought to myself.

I was a horrible liar and Shawn knew better than anyone when I was lying. My voice went higher than usual and my cheeks always turned pink after I realized how ridiculous the lie was. If I lied, he would know. I should just save myself the trouble of making up a lie and tell him.

“I just really don’t want us to have to leave each other because-”

“Because why?” He interrupted.

“Because I hate not being able to see you.” I said, stalling as long as I could.

“Why are you so upset though? I have to leave all the time and you don’t cry, do you?”

“No, but it’s different this time. I’m leaving for college so when you come home, I won’t be here. When I come home, you won’t be here, Shawn. It’s so different this time.”

“It’s not that much diff-”

“Yes, it is, Shawn! You don’t understand!” I said, raising my voice at him without meaning to.

“Then make me understand, Y/N. What is different about leaving this time?”

“Because I’m fucking in love with you and I have to leave you! You’re the reason why I’m going to college in Toronto, so I can be close to you when you come home.” I gasped when I realized that I told him. I actually told Shawn how I felt instead of keeping it to myself like I had for the past half of a year.

“Do you honestly think that I’m not in love with? Why do you think I’ve stayed here and haven’t gotten an apartment in New York or Los Angeles or wherever I want?” He paused. I only stared, waiting for him to continue. He ran his fingers through his thick hair out of frustration. “It kills me every time I have to leave you. You don’t even understand. I should have told you sooner, but I love you. I love you so damn much that it hurts. I’ve seen you get your heart broken multiple times and I have done absolutely nothing about it. I should have told you a long time ago, I’m sorry that we had to tell each other like this.”

“Shawn, don’t apologize. I should have told you a long time ago as well.” I cooed. I rubbed his arm in an attempt to calm him. “What does this mean for us?”

“What do you want it to mean?” He asked, looking up at me with his rich, caramel colored eyes. My own eyes stared into his for a moment, as if I was searching for the answer in his eyes. I exhaled sharply but slowly before giving him an answer.

“I want to make this work if you want to. I want to be with you. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.” I spoke. His eyes lit up at my words.

He moved closer to me and I didn’t move, I let him inch closer. I watched his every move and then he took my hand in his. Shawn’s fingers laced with mine and I waited for him to do something more. I knew I wouldn’t be able to force myself to initiate a kiss, so I waited for Shawn.

I stared into Shawn’s eyes and his face came closer to mine. A few small tears still lingered on my cheeks and Shawn kissed them away. The feeling of his lips on my skin felt phenomenal, I couldn’t describe the feeling. I breathed hard and sporadically. Shawn’s lips hovered over mine, our lips barely grazing against each other. I surprised myself when I closed the gap. I pressed my lips against his soft, smooth lips. We both smiled, causing us to bump our teeth together. We both laughed because it wasn’t awkward, it felt right. We knew each other so well already that this just felt right. This was how it was supposed to be all along.

Our lips moved together while Shawn’s hands rested on my waist. His soft skin lingered on my lips and he began to pull away. I grabbed the material of his shirt, pulling him back into me.

“Please. Don’t stop.” I breathed out against his lips. My breath was hot and short, I needed his lips on mine so badly that I couldn’t breathe properly. He smiled then kissed me once more. His tongue now traced over my bottom lip and I whimpered lightly at the feeling. Just simple touches from him were driving me insane. I had been craving kisses like these for so long now that this moment felt like pure bliss. His tongue moved against mine slowly and gently, but the kiss grew heated. Shawn’s teeth sunk into my bottom lip and I gasped at the feeling.

His lips now pressed against my neck and it felt delightful. My eyelids closed slowly at the feeling. I didn’t want to focus on anything but Shawn’s lips on my skin right now, but Shawn made that an easy task. His soft lips fluttering on my skin lightly made me shiver. His long fingers traced circles on my hips under my shirt. I now laid underneath him, he hovered over me but pressed his lower half into me. I could feel a slight bulge growing in his jeans and couldn’t help the smirk that grew on my lips.

We kept kissing for a while longer, until both our lips were raw and we had both kissed what little bit of skin that was exposed with all our clothing still on. Shawn’s fingers fidgeted with the hem of my shirt, obviously wanting to take it off.

“Bedroom?” He asked quickly in between sweet pecks on each other’s lips. I nodded and he grabbed my hand, I then followed to his room. Once in his room with the door closed, his fingers moved under my shirt again. He looked into my eyes to make sure it was okay and I gave him a look of approval. He peeled my shirt off and tossed it to the floor. Shawn moved over me on his bed. He kissed my still bra-clad chest delicately. My whole body erupted with a feeling I had never felt with any other guy before Shawn. He slipped his fingers under my bra straps and slid them down my shoulders. His hands were soon at my back to unclasp my bra.

Suddenly, I felt insecure. I felt like I wouldn’t be enough for him. I inhaled deeply while he removed my bra, hoping he wouldn’t be disappointed. Before I could process what was happening, Shawn’s mouth was on my breasts. His lips first kissed lightly, then sucked on my sensitive skin. His tongue teased my nipples and I ran my fingers through his hair. I moaned and whimpered from his touch and he hummed, his throat vibrating against me in response.

“God, you’re so beautiful.” Shawn kissed my stomach right above the button of my pants. I grew nervous because up until this point, I knew what I was doing and I knew what to expect. I’d had sex a couple times before, sure, but Shawn was much more experienced than I was. Even through the nerves, though, my centre throbbed for Shawn.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Shawn asked me. My nerves wanted me to say no, but I did want this. I had wanted it, needed it for so long. I told him yes and he continued. His kissed my hips while unbuttoning my pants. They slid down my legs and dropped to the floor with the rest of my clothing. I realized then that Shawn was still fully clothed. He hovered over me again to kiss me. His tongue played with mine and I pushed his shirt up while kissing him, hinting that I wanted it off. He pulled the fabric over his toned abdomen and chest and I nearly felt my heart stop in that moment.

I had seen Shawn shirtless many times but I never really could admire him like I wanted. This time, my eyes scanned over him slowly, taking in every detail of all the ridges and valleys of his body. Shawn asked again if I was sure that I wanted this, I told him again that I did. His long fingers rubbed my core through the damp cloth of my underwear. I squirmed under his touch, even though it was barely anything compared to what would come next. His hands hooked around my panties and removed them. I was now completely nude in front of Shawn for the very first time, something I thought would never happen.

He slipped his middle finger into me, causing me to gasp. His finger worked slowly inside me, trying not to build up the pressure too quickly. Shawn’s mouth made its way to my pussy, licking enthusiastically over my clit. I moaned for him over and over. I soon lost all control over holding off my orgasm. Shawn’s tongue flicked up and down my clit and his finger curled inside me. I arched my back and Shawn now had to hold my legs apart. I came so blissfully and Shawn drug out my orgasm until it was almost painful.

He moved from between my legs with a smile on his face. He wiped his mouth dry with his hand after licking my juices off his finger. A thought occurred to me, I wondered how many times he had done that to be so amazing at it. I also wondered how many times he had done what we were about to do. It was a stupid thing to think, but the experience I lacked in this area made me think this way.

I started to remove Shawn’s jeans. I unbuttoned them eagerly because I wanted to please him like he had just pleased me. Taking his jeans off revealed a prominent bulge in his underwear, which made me even wetter, if that was possible at this point. I inched the waistband of his boxers down until they were off him completely. I took his length in my hand, unsure of what to do but he seemed to enjoy it. I jerked my hand upwards on his cock and he moaned quietly. Shawn’s much larger hand pushed mine away, I thought that maybe it was because he didn’t like it as much as I had presumed.

“You’re going to have to stop. I want to last for you, Y/N.” he spoke. I felt my cheeks heat up at the thought of making him feel so good that he may cum. He searched in his nightstand drawer for a condom. He rolled it onto his hard length after tearing open the wrapper.

“Y/N, I’m only going to ask you one more time and please be honest, are you sure, absolutely sure you want to do this with me?” He said sweetly, lovingly. I started to second guess this whole thing. It was too soon, we just confessed our feelings for each other barely an hour ago. However, if we didn’t do this now, it would be months before we ever got to. I didn’t think I could wait that long.

“I’m completely sure, Shawn. I want this, I need this with you. I wouldn’t want to do this with anyone else.” I assured him. He lined himself up at my entrance and kissed my forehead before pushing into me. I winced at the slight discomfort but was no longer hurting after four very slow and steady thrusts.

“Are you okay?” Shawn said, sounding concerned. I nodded and he kept thrusting at a slow pace. I could tell his thrusts were shallow and I was no longer hurting, therefore I wrapped my legs around him. This pushed his length deeper inside me than it had previously been.

“Oh, Shawn.” I gasped. I looked up at Shawn to see him biting his lip while watching himself thrust in and out of me. He looked as if he was struggling with keeping it at such a slow pace from the way his chest was rising so rapidly. He slid into me with ease now and finally, finally bottomed out. We both moaned at the feeling.

“Faster,” I begged, once the feeling of pain and discomfort was completely gone. Shawn looked into my eyes first, just to be sure, then sped up the pace of his thrusts. I could tell this speed pleasured him much more than the previous one and it was a pleasurable feeling for me as well. Shawn’s moans were more frequent and drawn out now. I moaned just as often, maybe even more than Shawn did. He knew how to make this feel so wonderful and different than it had ever felt for me before.

One hand was in Shawn’s hair and the other gripped onto his bicep, my nails digging into his skin. With each thrust I came closer to my climax and Shawn made it hard to not come undone so soon. I tensed around him after a deep thrust. I became short of breath and Shawn could sense I was close. He thrusted faster and I could barely take it. I clenched around his dick, because I wanted to feel every inch of him and also because I couldn’t control it.

Shawn’s hands were placed on my waist in an attempt to get a better grip while he thrusted. Just one more hard, deep thrust pushed me over into euphoric bliss all because of Shawn. I couldn’t believe he could make me feel this way, make me feel like no one else ever had. I grew more sensitive with every second that passed while Shawn brought himself to his orgasm. He pushed in and out of me sloppily and by the time I felt warm liquid fill the condom, I was more sensitive than ever before. Shawn hissed profanities through his teeth.

Shawn threw the condom away then left to clean up. He returned some minutes later and gave me a shirt of his to throw on. I slipped into it and took in his scent. Shawn lay beside me and we just looked at each other with our arms wrapped around one another. We took in the beautiful sight of each other with that post-orgasm glow we now both had. Inevitably, I thought of how we were both leaving tomorrow. It made my heart break into tiny pieces.

“I wish you didn’t have to leave me tomorrow.” I whispered.

“I wish I didn’t either. But when we both come home, I’m yours and you’re mine, yeah?” He spoke. A smile spread across my lips and I nodded to agree. I pecked his lips softly. The feeling of being his was overwhelming.

You rolled over violently and looked at Jensen, his snoring keeping you awake as he laid there. You furrowed your eyebrows, grabbing for your pillow with thoughts about smacking him with it filling you up with enough peace to put you back to sleep. But as you gripped the corner of your pillow, another thought came to mind. Releasing the pillow, you spun around and grabbed your phone off the nightstand and pulling the charger out of it. Bringing up the camera, you began recording, putting you on the screen with a snoring Jensen just behind you.

You stared at Jensen on the phone for a solid ten seconds before releasing a sigh. “I love you, Jensen. Even if your loud snoring keeps me up at night, I’ll still love you. I’d rather be dead tired than to not sleep next to you. Love you, baby.” You turned around and kissed his cheek with a loud mwah before turning back to your phone and stopped the recording. You snuggled back into bed and forced Jensen’s arm around you, smiling widely as you closed your eyes and tried to fall asleep despite the snoring in your ear.

You know, I actually wanted to discuss this since the last chapter. What will Touka do if Yoriko is still alive? We don’t get definitive clarification regarding her status but since Mutsuki talked about “arrest” and suggested they have a talk in private I’ll assume she’s still alive. So Will Touka go rescue her? I think she will. Facing the possibility that her best friend is still alive but suffering a lot and all because of her, because she’s a ghoul and they’re friends - Touka can’t possibly just let her suffer and die if there’s a chance of saving her.

Soooo, the inner conflict will be that Touka doesn’t want to endanger the group. There’s a lot at risk if she goes to search and rescue her. Even if the whole gang goes, it’s still an unnecessary risks since they won’t gain any benefits from it. But then again, same goes for the lab operation to save Akira. It was a personal issue for Kaneki, but speaking from the perspective of the OEK and the group as a whole it was selfish as he could have saved themselves a lot of trouble if he stayed with the others instead if scattering the forces. And it’s different this time, since the goats are already in a tight spot rn and there might be traps everywhere as Mutsuki and co. are already awaiting them.
So i was wondering if she’d even consult the others about Yoriko. If she does, she can bet her ass that the others will support her to rescue Yoriko and she wouldn’t want to cause trouble for everyone bc of her own issues.

Now in this chapter we see Kaneki wondering if she’s ok/hurt and we know she isn’t. She’s in distress. She good at hiding it. Her facial expression looks completely neutral when she talks to Kaneki, just like when she told Mutsuki that she doesn’t know Kosoka. That leads me to assume that she doesn’t want to let anyone else know about it at all.
She probably gonna go save Yoriko herself and I’m super worried.
[The other, although less likely, possibilities here are that she won’t go save Yoriko bc if she gets captured or anything, you can bet hell will break lose on Kaneki and co’s side and that’s a lot of trouble for the group too.
Or, she figured it was just a bluff bc it didn’t smell like Yoriko? But she gets triggered and sad anyways :(

I can’t begin to fathom how worried and stressed she must feel now, especially having to act like nothing happened and shouldering it alone.
So she asks Kaneki about Hide. What does he feel, how would he act? She’s indirectly asking for advice. And Kaneki apologizes bc he’s not much of a help there. When he felt like seeing him he never did it or anything else to help fill that need (he’s probably referring to how he always kept his distance to not endanger Hide and well, you know, afterwards he could not go see him at all…) So he always just ends up missing him even more. *rips heart out*

And then she pins him down.
Might have to do with her missing and actually being thirsty for him for a long time, but what I think really was the trigger here is that she’s looking for relief from the pain both of them share. It just simple as that but then again it’s deep. It gives me feels bc they’re both hurting and she’s looking for a way to make it go away for even just a short moment. She might be a little desperate bc it hurts so much… So many emotions are overwhelming her.

Kaneki is right. They both need some rest…
