this is my favorite thing she's done

Arya Stark Appreciation Week - Day Two (Favorite Familial Relationship)

“I think [Arya] must be dead too.“ When she said that, it felt as though a giant hand were squeezing her chest. (ACOK)

And her lady mother, what would she say? Would she still want her back, after all the things she’d done? Arya chewed her lip and wondered. (ASOS)

arya and catelyn’s dynamic has been my favorite among the starks since the very beginning. i remember when i read a storm of swords i almost threw my book across the room as i got to the part where arya pulls cat’s body out of the river. and the first asoiaf graphic i ever made was a really ugly arya/cat picspam. its not exactly a warm fuzzy relationship. its complicated. arya worries her mother would not want her back because she didnt feel she could be a lady and cat does despair of arya at times (while still loving her as much as the rest of her children)  they dont even interact on page. but its my fave all the same. i think one of the reasons i love it so much is because they’re actually so similar and neither of them realizes it. on the surface they’re very different: cat has always comfortably embraced her role as a lady while arya has struggled to conform to it. but deep down? they’re both practical, intelligent, outspoken, no nonsense women with pragmatic minds. they are assertive and capable leaders. they act instinctively and boldly.they’re fiercely protective of those they love and vindictive against those who wrong them. it might be silly but i love how they both stan for the direwolves too. arya’s bond with her wolf (and her wolves) runs deep and catelyn has a great respect for their power. she “loves” summer for ripping out a man’s throat to save bran’s life. which feels a lot like something arya would think as well.

“She is a fierce little thing, my lord. I have never seen such anger in a girl.” (AGOT)

“Give me Cersei Lannister, Lord Karstark, and you would see how gentle a woman can be,” Catelyn replied. (AGOT)

the most important (and underrated) similarity between them is the devotion they show to their family. they are two of the most family orientated characters in this series. cat’s words are family, duty, honor and arya’s personal motto is the pack survives. this is what motivates them: the desire to get their family back. and they will do just about anything to accomplish that goal. they value this above all else, including vengeance. but when their families are completely gone they will come for those responsible.

I am a creature of grief and dust and bitter longings. There is an empty place within me where my heart was once. (ACOK)

It was a hollow place, an emptiness where her heart had been, where her brothers had lived, and her parents. (ASOS)

on a narrative level they are so deeply intertwined that i cannot believe its a coincidence. they share a strong water motif. arya spends a majority of her time in the riverlands which is not only catelyn homeland but its her current location too. arya fights so hard to reach riverrun, and her mother and robb. without knowing the other is fighting just as hard to find them. but the red wedding is where it all comes crashing down. inside the castle, cat has to watch as her last son is betrayed and murdered before she is killed by the freys. outside, arya finds herself in the middle of the slaughter too. she runs for the castle, to save her mother, but sandor clegane knocks her unconscience. this tragedy ends with arya and catelyn stark blacking out and when they awaken they are changed.

I’m not his daughter, Arya might have shouted, if she hadn’t felt so tired. She was no one’s daughter now. She was no one.

“She don’t speak,” said the big man in the yellow cloak. “You bloody bastards cut her throat too deep for that. But she remembers.” (ASOS)

arya is stricken with grief. her last hope to return home and be reunited with her family was destroyed. arya feels as if she is no one. her identity was built upon her pack and without them she is more lost then ever. catelyn stark never truly wakes up. arya and her wolf pulled the three day old corpse out of the river and beric dondarrion gave it the kiss of life, in a possible attempt to fulfill his oath to arya. lady stoneheart’s existence is a direct result of arya’s will.

The white thing lay facedown in the mud, her dead flesh wrinkled and pale, cold blood trickling from her throat. Rise, she thought. Rise and eat and run with us. (ASOS)

“The Freys slashed her throat from ear to ear. When we found her by the river she was three days dead. Harwin begged me to give her the kiss of life, but it had been too long. I would not do it, so Lord Beric put his lips to hers instead, and the flame of life passed from him to her. And … she rose. May the Lord of Light protect us. She rose.” (AFFC)

but she is not the woman she once was. she is a creature driven by nothing but revenge. she has no objectivity or remorse or sympathy. all she wants is to see hanged men. arya is also driven by revenge. its all she has left. this and the fact she has nowhere else to go brings her across the narrow sea to the house of black and white. there she begins to train in assassination and espionage. one of her responsibilities is caring for the dead. its a hard, bloody thing she’s doing. but she has nowhere else to turn. she’s lost and afraid and grieving. she takes on catelyn’s name as one of her aliases and mercy is also a nod to stoneheart who is known as mother merciless. arya is capable of violence and ruthlessness just like her mother’s revenant but she still has a heart. it is not gone or made of stone or even as hard as she likes to think. its still hurting and loving.

Needle was Robb and Bran and Rickon, her mother and her father, even Sansa. Needle was Winterfell’s grey walls, and the laughter of its people. Needle was the summer snows, Old Nan’s stories, the heart tree with its red leaves and scary face, the warm earthy smell of the glass gardens, the sound of the north wind rattling the shutters of her room. Needle was Jon Snow’s smile. He used to mess my hair and call me “little sister,” she remembered, and suddenly there were tears in her eyes. (AFFC)

lady catelyn stark is dead but arya is still alive. arya does not need to go down this road that lies before her with the faceless men. or even one outside of them where she pursues those on her list. she still has a life and a future and those who will love her. all she needs is to find that path again. and i think lady stoneheart will help her realize that. i very much believe they will cross paths. when they do it will be both a climax and a closure. arya will finally understand how much her mother loved her. many of her self doubts and fears about where she belongs will be conquered. she will finally be able to save her mother too. thats what she wanted more than her own life. the arya who walks away from this will be stronger and more confident. and lady stoneheart will finally be given her own mercy. she is a soul in torment but her daughter will be the one to give her peace. i can think of no better ending to this storyline. its a culmination of the themes in their both arcs coming together in one heartbreaking and cathartic event.

I’m in my mid-twenties, and honestly get so much hate over being childfree that I’ve started telling people I have an adopted daughter when they ask about my kids. I just conveniently leave out the fact that my adopted daughter is, in fact, a 40-pound sheep, one of roughly two dozen that live in my back yard.

It isn’t even a lie, I raised that lamb on a bottle from the day she was born, as far as she’s concerned I’m her mom. And as long as I’m vague enough, the problems of dealing with sheep sound totally believable as human toddler parenting problems. “Oh yeah, my daughter’s two, she always puts everything in her mouth.” “Ugh, my daughter is always climbing on stuff, I swear she’s part mountain goat!”

I live for seeing how long I can keep it up before someone asks to see a picture of my little darling. “Sure!” I say, “Here she is! Isn’t she adorable?” then relish the horrified confusion when they see this tiny little brown sheep like:

It’s the best thing. It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever done, next to raising sheep in the first place.

A Guide to The Adventure Zone metaplot

So recently, I re-listened to the entirety of TAZ in prep for the ending and took notes; as we head into the finale next week, I wanted to share them! This is a comprehensive look at every plot thread, bit of foreshadowing, and yet-unresolved ideas as we head into endgame. This involves heavy spoilers through the most recent episode (66) and assumes you have already listened or read the content before.

The full is under the cut!

Seventh tattoo! Took me three years since my last one to get it but it was worth the wait. The Raven Cycle became my favorite series last year. The story, the characters, the endless resources for memes… it makes me happy. @maggie-stiefvater and all the articles she writes, how she tells stories, really inspires me and meeting her at Hal-Con last year definitely helped my own writing and got me motivated again. Thank you for this quote and for putting Henry Cheng in book 4. I might be afraid of many things, but that isn’t going to stop me from being happy. (Tattoo done by Becky M)

I have Some Thoughts™ about actual Waverly’s behavior (non-Gooverly) from 2x03, so I’mma dump them here, as per usual.

Wynonna’s big theme regarding Waverly this episode is making sure she doesn’t lose herself. They come back to it several times, and even though Wynonna’s oblivious about whatever’s going on with this possession situation, she’s proving that being Waverly’s big sister is super important to her.

And Waverly is pretty much all about Nicole right now, when she’s not picking up shiny objects with her five-finger-discount to add to her kleptomania museum. Don’t get me wrong, it’s refreshing to see non-straight women on my tv who are unapologetic about just how into one another they are, but I think it’s also important to note that she’s lost herself in at least one other person before. This type of behavior is common for people with abandonment issues, and I think they’re doing a wonderful job of bringing it out subtly that perhaps a flaw of Waverly’s is that she latches on too tight in romantic relationships and might lose herself a little bit in that process.

The thing that stands out to me the most about this is the fine line that Wynonna’s trying to walk: being super supportive of her baby sister’s new relationship but also being vocal about Waverly being important without a relationship. (Her whole “you’re the best, remember that” comment reminded me of Cristina Yang telling Meredith Grey, “He’s not the sun, you are.”)

Wynonna doesn’t have any context for what’s happening other than seeing how Waverly is behaving. So, for instance, she’s not aware that when Waverly shows up to the high school while Nicole’s working, Nicole’s response is, “hey babe, I’m working just now, do you think you can self-entertain until I’m done?” It seems like she just assumes that Nicole is Champ 2.0, and she doesn’t want Waverly (who missed her own valedictorian speech to watch Champ play video games - what????) to go down this road again. I bet she’s imagining that Nicole is probably encouraging this kind of clinginess instead of what she’s actually doing - trying to find a good balance for them both while asserting that her job is very important to her and that she has a pretty clear boundary when it comes to her work. This is one of my favorite things about the conflict going on between Wynonna and Nicole right now. They both very clearly care for Waverly, but they’re very much not on the same page. It’s complicated.

And I love that they’re letting Waverly’s flaws and insecurities shine through. She’s clearly struggling with whatever’s inside of her, but when she’s not, she’s struggling with the very non-supernatural, very relatable issue of how to maintain your identity in a brand new relationship. And they’re not afraid to let her fail a little bit, and to use it as an opportunity to strengthen the bond that she and Wynonna share.

It’s good storytelling, is what I’m saying.

my absolute most favorite thing about mike wheeler is the amount of patience he has for eleven. when she doesn’t understand a concept as simple as that of telling time, he wastes not two seconds more in finding a way to rephrase himself rather than making her feel embarrassed for being so naive. he knows he’s done it when he sees that little smile curving into existence just beneath her gentle gaze.

Day 2 of Undyne Appreciation Week @undyne-appreciation

Running a day behind because I ended up falling asleep after my July 4th party and couldn’t do this yesterday. I’m gonna try to get Day 3 done before day 4, but no promises!

My favorite thing about Undyne is really tricky to pin down exactly, but I like how even though she’s a tough warrior heroine who will punch her problems in the face, suplex a boulder, and burn down her own house to make some INTENSE spaghetti, she’s also got this quiet, thoughtful side to her. She meditates, she’s clearly given a lot of careful thought to whether she should accept Papyrus into the Guard, she spends hours practicing speeches, she values a quiet cup of tea and conversation, and she writes a letter over and over again, because she can never find the right words.

She’s got this super caring, thoughtful, contemplative and romantic side to her that you might not expect, even though she seems afraid to completely show it. It’s a great juxtaposition with her toughness and more aggressive nature and high energy.

I love her.

part two

requests are open

When Jughead asked you to go out on your first date you were both surprised and really happy. You had always dreamed of dating Jughead, but the raven haired loner never seemed to go out with anyone. You weren’t sure if he wasn’t into anyone or was just really selective of who got close; which you for sure had to be one of the causes.

God I love your head canons and fics on spideychelle so much can you give me recs for some as good as yours?

hello! i’m so happy you like the things i write :))) as for fic recs, oh bOY, do i have some for you!

headcanons

so, basically any of spideyxchelle’s headcanons are good content. some of my personal favorites:

also read anything by my friend maggie. she’s got adorable and also slightly angsty headcanons and she also wrote a FIC that is adorable and i love it and i’m trying to convince her to write a second part.

there’s a ton of other headcanons and i reblog them a lot under my spideychelle tag if you wanna keep looking!

fanfic

so i bookmark stuff that i like on ao3, which you can search through here if you’d like. but some of my personal favorites:

that’s a LOT of stuff, but i figured you’d be happier having more fic than less! the spideychelle fandom is also just…super talented so i couldn’t contain myself. and the thing is there are so many other good fics/headcanons that i didn’t even include here! i regularly check the spideychelle tag on tumblr and the michelle jones/peter parker tag on ao3 haha.

but i hope you enjoy reading and have a good day :)

I am honestly very grateful to have Hermione. All throughout elementary school and middle school, I was teased and ignored because I loved to read and was basically a “teachers pet. ” When I read the Harry Potter books and Hermione was introduced, I was ecstatic. I had FINALLY found a character I could relate to. She is one of my favorite characters ever! ( PS. I know she has done bad things, but I try to focus on the good.)

I know we're all heartbroken about Steve (still crying a week later) but I was wondering if you think Steve should come back or if he should stay dead so that his sacrifice means something? Love your blog btw

Look, I was so sad when Steve died! But also, I was good with it. Patty Jenkins had to advocate for including Steve in Wonder Woman because she wanted Diana to have a fully realized superhero story. Part of being a superhero is having mangst, so killing off Steve to give the superhero motivation—while not my favorite—is a common superhero trope from which I’m glad Wonder Woman wasn’t excluded. #subvertallthetropes

And honestly, Steve’s death was so so sad but so beautifully done. He cheered for his lady until his dying breath.  “I can save today but you can save the world” is the most STEVE TREVOR thing ever. That was why he sacrificed himself, and I don’t think that bringing him back would negate that sacrifice. It served its purpose in the moment.  And if there’s one thing I have learned as a Steve Trevor fan it’s that he does the death/resurrection thing pretty well. WINK WINK.  Thanks for the question!
