this is more complex than it looks i promise

Why Ochako is Actually a Complex Character

 So leggo.

Now I won’t go into overall details about her because I already did that in this post that you can read right here, which I essentially discussed how she’s actually an amazing WSJ heroine and whoever voted her the worst should put their heads in sand because they don’t deserve to see the rest of the world (I kid I kid, promise!).

Rather, I wanted to challenge the viewpoints people have of her and really argue on the fact that Ochako Uraraka is actually more of a complex character than we give her credit for. Most often than not, the fandom looks towards Katsuki or Izuku or even Todoroki and they build them up and go on and on about their complexity in the series. Hell, those three are my friend’s favorite characters and they are fan favorites for a multitude of reasons that they deserve. I myself have made numerous posts about Katsuki since we are given such complex views of him as well as the others in the series. They are the main focus in the story and their growth has been some of the best we’ve ever seen in a series.

However, characters iike Ochako, who actually does have a lot of complexity and dimensionality, get lost in their wake and I really want to talk about that.

Most often than not, when we see Ochako, we see this bubbly smiling girl who has such a wonderful and positive attitude that sometimes comes off ditzy. One glance at her and the words that come to mind are cute, adorable, fluffy, etc because that is the type of character that she mostly is. She is the female support of Izuku and the way she contributes to the story is with her adorable attitude that lightens up the mood in certain situations like the Ground Zero fight and even the room competition (did you see how cute she was with Iida’s glasses!?).

Yet, what bothers me and possibly other really hardcore fans of her is that she isn’t just this bubbly character that smiles on the side but she does have complex issues that really makes her character more interesting in comparison to other characters.

I mean for starters, this girl is the QUEEN of keeping her emotions from people and really suppressing them in most situations and not letting them get in the way of what she wants to get done.

For example, the first real example of this is when she lost to her fight with Katsuki.

Now let’s remember situational factors going into this: we just found out her true goals into going to heroics (which was said in a much more serious tone than we had ever seen from her before)

we found out she was incredibly nervous to be facing Katsuki (and again WAS SUPPRESSING HER EMOTIONS)

we saw her rejecting Izuku’s help (as well as her little speech about feeling ashamed)

So seeing her crying when she’s speaking to her family isn’t just some small defeated thing but it really gives us so much insight in her character and who she is as a person. We finally see how truly hard she is on herself and the perfectionist personality that she usually keeps hidden from others. You can even see by her facial expression when Izuku left that she put on a face for him to not let him get more worried then he already was.

And then don’t even get me started with her attitude during the Hero License Exam because oh my gosh, that was so powerful from her.

From that, we first see her being so strategic af:

Then we get this amazing speech from Izuku about her and how he could have told the difference between her and Kemi (notice the plan part!)

Of course her being a BA here cuz eh why not, she’s really grown from her training

I just

There are so many moments of Ochako that I missed that would have proved my point even further than this but these moments here showcase how complex and really interesting Ochako is as a character.

The bubbly personality that we see from her is only a piece of the whole picture and you could even argue that she’s so good at suppressing her emotions that it’s the personality she chooses to portray to others to keep her other emotions away from people because she doesn’t want to burden others. I personally don’t know if that’s true at all and maybe it is, maybe it isn’t but the fact is that she isn’t just some character that sits on the side and looks cute and adorable. There are so elements about her that makes her different and the fight she had with Katsuki really changed her as well as her inspiration from Izuku. She took both of those interactions with those characters and used them to better herself and it’s just SO POWERFUL. Not many shounen female heroines do that so it’s so refreshing to have Ochako be the way she is.

Overall, as obvious as it must be, Ochako is one of my favorite characters and I’m so excited to see the growth she’s going to have more in the series. Her feelings for Izuku got cut off during the exam so that’s an arc we need to get from her and I know I want to see Ochako kicking Katsuki’s ass and actually winning to show how much she’s grown from the beginning. I have so much hope that Horikoshi has so many plans for her character and I’m so excited to see what he has in store for her and how he will continue to build upon her.

 Regardless, Happy Birthday Ochako!

TLDR: Ochako is a very complex character and I wish more people celebrated that.

If there’s something I love it’s hearing people’s book recommendations so today I’m giving you mine!

  • Only Ever Yours - this book is amazing and hardly anyone talks about it. The best way I can describe it is a feminist critique set in a dystopian society. Beware, it is not a happy read, but I do think it’s extremely eye-opening and something everyone should read.
  • Carry On - sort of a spin off of Fangirl (but not really) and kind of a Harry Potter rip off (but not really). The characters are lovable and the universe is actually pretty interesting in spite of being based off of HP. And the fluff. All the fluff.
  • We Were Liars – this is a mystery that starts with Cady going back to her family’s vacation island and meeting up with her childhood friend group, the Liars. May possibly make you flip a table. Also E. Lockhart’s writing style sets the pace for this novel so well. So much said in such few words.
  • The Darkest Minds – superpowers, concentration camps and a roadtrip, need I say more? It’s fast-paced, interesting and the heroine actually has a personality.
  • Vicious (actually all of VE Schwab’s books but let’s start here) - this book tells the story of the rivalry between two (super)villans. The superpower-holders are complex and the constant POV switch just makes the story a lot more interesting ALSO IT’S GETTING A SEQUEL AND I’M DYING
  • One of Us is Lying - a high school murder mystery à la PLL. The characters and the amount of development they go through alone make this read worthwhile.
  • The Raven Boys – if you haven’t heard about these books have you been living under a rock?, I promise you, you’ve never read anything like them  It’s technically about a boy looking for a ancient Welsh king but the characters make it so much more than that and also it’s just so atmospheric and aesthetic?
  • The Coldest Girl in Coldtown - aka a vampire book done right. The plot and situation is extremely believable and despite being a standalone, the world is well developed. Also the romance is so not in your face that you can just ignore it {but you won’t want to tbh).
  • Kill The Boy Band – hilarious commentary on fangirl culture that takes an unexpected turn (fine maybe not so unexpected). It’s short, fast-paced and if you’ve ever participated in fangirl culture (who hasn’t?),you’ll relate so much.
  • No Good Deed – written by the same author as Kill The Boy Band and equally as great. Follows a summer camp for young activists who, after a competition for a juicy prize is announced, begin sabotaging each other. If you’ve spent more than two minutes on Tumblr, the constant parody of extreme social justice should resonate with you.
  • Ready Player One – a scavenger hunt set in a virtual reality. The world is fascinating and well crafted and the plot’s sense of urgency will keep you turning the pages. (Also I just did a review on it if you want to know more).
  • The 5th Wave - the real selling point of this book is how it makes you second guess yourself until the very end. Also the main character’s sarcasm and sense of humor is on point. Yes it’s about an alien invasion but who cares.

Two recommendations that are probably not for everybody

  • Pretty Little Liars (yep the books) - if you like really immersive and realistic writing with well developed characters that deal with relatable problems, you will love these books. Also it’s an actual well-woven mistery with real answers, not a total tease like the TV show, and it delves much deeper into issues that the show shies away from. But beware, there are like 20 books in the series.
  • All of LJ Smith’s books ALL OF THEM. If you like your supernatural YA romance, these will be your jam. I specially recommend the Night World series (I’d actually say start with the second one and once you’re hooded read the first one), the Dark Visions trilogy and The Forbidden Game. Skip The Secret Circle and The Vampire Diaries if you’re not into slow reads.

Also!! Please give me book recs (put them in the tags if you want to, I’ll be reading them)!! it’s not like I already have a ridiculous TBR.

Thank you @nasa-hopeful for encouraging me to post this (it’s like eight months late but better late?)

Off Limits - Part 2

Pairing: Dean x Reader

Word Count: 2,377

Summary: Sam tells Dean that the reader is off limits. Dean’s never been one to follow the rules…

Part 1

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Sam grumbles loudly slamming his beer down onto the bar.

Dean doesn’t say a word in response, instead he just flashes his million dollar smile before downing the rest of his drink.

“I will literally kick your ass, man.” Sam narrows his eyes towards his older brother throwing him off.

“Whoa. You’re really worried aren’t you?”

“No, Dean. I’m just fucking bored. I figured this would fill my day.” Sam snaps feeling aggravated.

It’s rare when they both feel so strongly about something that it turns physical. It hasn’t happened in years but Dean knows all too well where this is headed.

“I’m not doing this to be a dick, man. I’m gonna be a father soon and it’s fucking freaking me out. I can’t be worrying about the bar. I can’t and I won’t.”

“Fine.” Dean growls, acting so fast he knocks his chair over making it crash to the ground.

she’s not bad, she’s just written that way

The more I see arguments over whether someone is a ‘bad character’ (as distinct from an antagonist or villain), the more red flags go up that tell me it’s a case of bad writing.

First, some context. This isn’t the kind of analysis I could comfortably make if we were only a few episodes in (unless the treatment is truly egregious). If VLD was a SF book, we’d be about halfway through the sequel. That’s plenty of room to look across and see patterns.

Putting my writer’s cap on, and the rest behind the cut.

A. Ryder: Log #4

They rescue the Moshae, and Jaal realizes he’s feeling more then admiration for the human Pathfinder.

Even more surprising, she seems to feel the same.

Pre/Just beginning relationship JaalxRyder, spoilers for main story and Jaal’s history/romance.

Also on AO3:

Somehow, despite the horror and rage running high during their attack on the Kett base, Jaal finds himself in awe of Ryder.

The Angara are not her people; she owes them nothing, has no reason to care, other than perhaps wanting to make a decent impression.

Yet she’s clearly just as disturbed and angry as he is, voice harsh as she tells SAM to hurry and open the chamber so they can help.

Ryder is a force of nature once they’re free - barreling through the Kett with biotics and gunning down those out of her reach - staying near while he mourns, briefly, the loss - before fighting further into the complex at his side.

They find the Moshae - save the Moshae - and then when she demands they destroy the facility, Ryder surprises him again.

By listening to him.

“I promised Jaal we would free everyone here; I won’t go back on that.”

It’s something more than awe and admiration he feels, then, though that realization is held back for the moment, concerned first with getting the Moshae back to the safety of Aya.

He finds himself speaking of her to his old teacher during their trip back, however, and she gives him a look that makes him wonder at himself.

It is only after they have returned the Moshae to Aya and Ryder has made certain comments to Evfra - ‘Jaal’s a valuable part of my crew, now. I’d like if he stayed with us.’ - that Jaal is sure of the things he is feeling, to a degree.

Ryder - Aria - is an interesting, lovely woman, and despite his past experience being rather disheartening, Jaal finds himself wanting to know her better.

To know what makes this feisty, easily flustered, brave human tick.

Jaal waits until after they’re finished on Voeld - the Vault opened, the planet significantly more livable, and the outpost up and running - before letting the topic come up, not wanting to push or scare her.

They’re talking as they often do, Jaal tinkering with his omni tool while Aria sits on the counter next to him, swinging her legs back and forth in what he believes is a nervous habit. (It’s adorable, regardless, but he keeps that thought to himself.)

She asks him questions, ever curious about his people - his history, his planet, his dreams - interested since he’d stepped on board.

This time, though, she asks if he has a partner. A mate?

Jaal smiles sadly, gaze still on the glowing tool on his wrist, “Not for a long time.”

And he tells her of the one woman he’d been entranced by - reflecting on the irony of how similar their names are, Allia and Aria - and how his brother had unintentionally stolen her, how she’d then joined his family as one of the Mothers.

Aria looks anguished, “You mean you have to see her every day?

“No,” Jaal responds softly, “They were taken by the Kett. Their children survived.”

“That’s… I’m so sorry, Jaal. I shouldn’t have asked.”

He chuckles, “Do not fret, Ryder; you have done nothing wrong. I do not mind sharing my past with you.”

“Okay… well. Just so you know… it was Allia’s loss not choosing you, in my opinion.”

That makes his fingers pause over his wrist, gaze sliding to the redhead sitting beside him, “Oh?”

Aria’s fidgeting, eyes locked firmly on her feet as they swing back and forth, “I think you’re interesting, and… well, great. Anyway, I’dliketogettoknowyoubetter.”

She says the words so quickly it’s a miracle that the translator is able to pick them apart, yet Jaal still stands a little taller, chest feeling a little lighter as a grin pulls at his lips.

She’d beaten him to asking, but more then that; his interest is reciprocated, and that alone thrills him.

Aria glances at him after a moment of quiet, amber gaze looking both hopeful and afraid, “What d’you think?”

“Yes,” Jaal responds easily, “I’d like that.”

She blinks in surprise, looking almost put out, “That’s it?”

“You are a lovely woman, fascinating, a brilliant risk-taker.” Jaal’s never been one to mince his words or hide his feelings, and now is no exception, “Knowing you better would be a gift. Sincerely.”

“Oh. Okay then.”

Aria’s face has turned a rather alarming shade of red, but she’s smiling, which tells Jaal he’s done well.

Their talk is interrupted by Cora requesting her presence over the comm, Aria murmuring something about ‘duty calls’ before flashing him another small smile and slipping down off the counter, heading up to the bio lab.

Jaal is grinning and typing out an email before she’s even left the room.

Aria breathes a small sigh of relief once the door of her quarters has slid shut behind her, mug of coffee cradled to her chest and the open, quiet space of the room making her relax.

You shouldn’t drink coffee right before bed, Ryder, the caffeine will mess with your sleep patterns. She could hear Lexi loud and clear, ignoring the memory and taking a long sip of the hot liquid.

Coffee was familiar, and it was as much a comfort these days as it was a stimulant. She would continue to drink it when she liked, thank you very much.

Grinning softly and heading for her computer terminal at SAM’s quiet chime of You have new emails, Pathfinder in her ear, Aria thought back on the day and smiles wider.

One specific part of the day, with one specific member of her crew. She hadn’t known what to expect, honestly, and wouldn’t have taken any offence had he not been interested.

Yet… somehow, he was. Interested in getting to know each other, open to talking about his past… it was strange. And wonderful.

And slightly terrifying.

She would be the first to admit she doesn’t know the first thing about flirting, or romance, or anything along those lines. The few crushes she’d had previously hadn’t gone anywhere, and she’d always been the workaholic type, so… she was flying blind with this.

But Jaal doesn’t seem to mind, so far. She can only hope her awkwardness won’t be to off putting.

Speaking of Jaal… Aria’s brows lift when she opens her email to find one at the top from the very Angara she’d just been thinking about, curious, What did he…?

She opens it, reads the first word, and promptly turns red, eyes going wide and mouth open in surprise.

Dearest, he’d called her.

Aria slaps her cheeks and spins around in her chair twice before looking at the screen again, trying to make sure she isn’t dreaming.

Nope, the email is still there, still beginning with Dearest, making a strange sort of giddiness rise up in her chest.

She reads the rest of the email, a grin stretching her lips as she takes in the words, going back to starting again once she’s finished.

Then again…. and then once more, surprised happiness making her feel lighter then she has since going to sleep over 600 years before.

Aria doesn’t know what to write back - she’s never been good at expressing her emotions, in person or via email - and yet Jaal makes her want to try.

Jaal with his open shows of emotion, his often blunt statements, and his acceptance of who she is, a Pathfinder with little experience who likely comes off as incompetent at times.

He cares, and he showed that he cared; all she can do is try to reply in kind.

Aria fires off a quick little response of her own before she can lose her nerve - It’s not strange, I rather like it, in fact - and then forces herself off the computer and into bed, knowing she has a long day ahead and needs the rest.

She’s still smiling as she drifts off, dreaming of blue eyes filled with stars and the landscape of Aya.

Consigliere Part III - Kitten and the Don

THIS IS THE FINAL PART of my three-parted series ‘Consigliere’, that is a tribute to the wonderful Undertale AU 'Kitten and The Don’ from @nyublackneko and @junkpilestuff . If you want to begin with the first part just click HERE or if you have missed the second you can click HERE.

Basically, this AU revolves around a 30-year old Frisk, who is mockingly called 'Kitten’ by their boss Don G. The story you are about to read focuses on one of Frisk’s missions, which is not what it seems to be. Just like their supposed enemy, the 'Golden Flower Gang’, who were actually trying to help and are now about to be interrogated. On the other hand, Frisk is getting more and more involved in the Dreemurr family business, while they try to find out more about their own kidnapping and their past.
Where will all this lead them?
After all, they say, curiosity kills the cat.

Thank you so much, to everyone out there, because you guys are so kind, supportive and patient! ;-;

I dedicate this story, which consumed my soul while I wrote it, to the sweetheart @candiedconstellations, who helped me so much with this story, continue to inspire me and simply is a wonderful friend!

Tbh this season was a little disappointing but shows promise, the characters look like they're going to be flushed out more.... maybe? At least they were more complex here than in season 2. And got some DEFINITE promise with Lotor (the Coran episode is pretty good too). They even make fun of themselves a little in the Coran episode! I understand you not wanting to watch this season tho because DW has hecked up too many times in these last seasons.

hmm meh

Did you know...Part 2

I believe i promised a new “Did you know” when Frozen hits 1 billion mark. And here it is, this time it’s about trivia and other fun stuff.

Did you know that…

Created from more than 400,000 individual threads, Elsa’s hair is the most complex of all characters.

Olaf was originally a name of a Mashmallow, Elsa’s snow monster.

Little details are awesome. If you look closely, Elsa’s hair glistens a little, like if it was made of snow.

Duke of Weselton was supposed to be an Anna and Elsa’s caretaker in the early script.

Naval officer is an occupation of Hans in one of the coloring books.

Elsa loves her sister. And the word “Love” repeats 56 times in a movie.

Very likely that Hans’ last name is Westerguard

Elsa, according to some early concept art, had blue skin.

Really early in the script, Anna was supposed to sit in Arendelle for several months before going to her sister.

Beauty and the Beast’s deleted scene was an inspiration to the scene of “The picture of sophisticated grace” in the song First Time in Forever.

Olaf’s thinking and humor were based on three principles: pure, simple, innocent.

That Kristoff’s last name is Bjorgman

Hans’ horse is named Sitron, which means “Lemon” in Norwegian.

Elsa had her own snow man army in the early version of a movie.

Really long time Disney wanted a The Snow Queen adaptation and it took them 4 tries and 70 years to make one.

Elsa has exactly 29 minutes and 30 seconds of screen time.

Door is used as a rhyme in 5 songs.

More than five days were needed to render a single frame of a movie.

Everything in a castle has some kind of a flowery or snowy motif.

Anna’s name means “full of grace”.

Never a Disney Prince was based on a female character. Before Kristoff. He was based on a Robber Girl from The Snow Queen.

You may noticed, that blankets that Hans give away to people, are in colors of two sisters: green and blue.

Wait, what? - This phrase repeats 6 times in a movie.

According to a director, Kristoff is 21

Year 1840 is an approximate time period when the story takes place.

Hope you enjoyed reading it as much as i enjoyed writing it.

What do you think of Gaider controversial portrayal of Isabela in the comics? To wich he pretty much rewrites her backstory and not only makes her a slaver (something she absolutely would never do in the games) but also have her kill said slaves just for her own convenience

I’m guessing from your tone that you won’t agree with this, which is fine - but I don’t see it as conflicting with the Isabela we get to know in DA2. And I’m not aware of anything that would make the comic a “rewrite” of her backstory. It expands on it, but it doesn’t disregard what she says in the game from what I recall (I went back and re-read the comic, read her WoT entry and watched an Isabela romance playthrough to refresh my memory.) I can understand seeing her actions as being OOC but I would argue that her past experiences shaped the woman we met in Kirkwall. The most objectionable part of her backstory, the time she allowed her ship to transport slaves, helped solidify her disgust with the slave trade (and herself for participating in it) and gave her even more motivation to free Castillon’s slaves despite the fact that it put her own life at risk.

I also think you’re seriously mischaracterizing what happens in Those Who Speak. She doesn’t kill the slaves “just for her own convenience.” Unless you think getting yourself and your crew killed is a minor inconvenience.

Before I dig into this, I will make this very clear: this is not a defense of what she did. This is just an examination of how her past decisions fit into her character arc. If you’re more comfortable just disregarding the comics altogether - have at. It’s just not how I choose to look at the series.

[Putting the rest under the cut because the images from the comic made this post pretty long.]

I feel like I need big boobs to be pretty, with media especially, a lot of guys recently have thrown around the 'it's like dating a 12 year old' and I try laugh it off but it makes me really self conscious.

Okay like fuck those guys. Boobs are boobs. They’re a thing that’s there to feed babies. Sure, they’re also rad and sexy and fun to play with, but they’re just boobs. If someone considers breast size a deal breaker, I promise you they are not worth your time.

Your body is amazing as it is. You don’t need to look a certain way to have value. And I promise you that there are people out there looking for more than how big your boobs are.

You’re way more than the sum of your parts. You’re not a checklist of physical attributes that then add up to your hotness score. You are a human being of infinite and incomprehensible depth and complexity. You’re an infinity of moments that have lead to you. Anyone who doesn’t see you that way isn’t looking hard enough. And you deserve someone who’s really looking.

The Iron Giant, as you may or may not know, is one of my most favourite films ever. And sadly, its not had a Blu Ray release yet. FOR SHAME WARNER BROTHERS!

Brad Bird, ace director, has been chatting to WB about it, but they are convinced that its only worthy of a bog standard one disk thing, maybe with one directors commentary on or something. FOR SHAME TWICE WARNER BROTHERS!

Personally, I’d love a great looking steel book, with a sleeve over the front with the scrap Superman logo, some postcards inside for different places in the film, maybe a little fact file from Ted Mansley about Giant sightings. One disk with the film, one .mov of the film on the other disk for use elsewhere, and a bonus disk filled with all the original bonus features, plus retrospectives from the cast and crew, updated commentaries, and a look into the complex process it was to make 2D and 3D animation work so seamlessly, and maybe even a short documentary into the history of Warner Brothers animation, and what was happening with the studio at that time to make them want to shut down.

But thats just me.

If you want something similar, tweet @WBHomeEnt, letting them know you want a Blu Ray version better than just your standard old thing. Hopefully they will listen, and hopefully I’ll get my SteelBook.

Thats been an update. I’ll have more posters one day I promise.

part one

By the end of visiting hours, Dean was mentally exhausted. He had told Castiel about their life over and over, constantly reintroducing himself and who he was to Cas; who Cas was. He had to remind himself that he had taken vows, through thick and thin, sickness and in health. He wouldn’t abandon Castiel simply because he couldn’t remember anything.

“Maybe you should 50 First Date him,” Sam suggested later that evening over dinner at Dean’s favorite diner. He wasn’t sure if Sam was joking or not.

“Like Adam Sandler him?” Dean shook his head and took another bite of his burger. “No way,” he said after swallowing the large bite. “I won’t subject him to that trash.”

“No, man, like… Make him a video about your life that he can watch. Maybe it’ll jog his memory. Show him the house, show him your life together. You guys take all of those videos, put them in a larger one. Like that trip we had to the Grand Canyon last summer. Put those videos in there.” Sam stabbed his salad a few times, twirling his fork a little as he thought out loud. “Or your wedding videos, the stupid home videos you guys take.”

“Hey,” Dean snapped, pointing his finger at Sam. “They’re not so stupid now that they could be useful… Just gotta make sure to keep the sexy ones out.”

Sam groaned and covered his face as if he were in pain. “Gross.”

Dean grinned. “What can I say, Cas has an exhibition complex.”

“Okay, dude, more than I needed to know… You going back tomorrow to see him?” Sam looked at him curiously. “I mean I know you were getting tired before, seeing him in a coma all the time, but he’s awake now.”

“Yeah… But it’s fucking exhausting telling him who I am every half hour,” Dean replied as his shoulders slumped. “He can’t even remember his own name. It’s really sad.”

“But he’s your husband,” Sam said quietly. “You promised you’d be there for him.”

“I know, Sammy, I know. I’m going back tomorrow.”

“I mean, imagine how he feels. You think you’re tired? Imagine waking up with no memory of anything. Not who you are, where you are, how you got there, the strange people around you…,” Sam gestured at him, “Imagine being him and seeing this strange man with you, telling you that he’s your husband, and then forgetting every thirty minutes. Just wiping your brain clean like a slate.”

Dean sighed and nodded. It was true; being in Castiel’s shoes had to be more terrifying than being in his. “You’re right.”

Sam pushed his plate aside once it was only remnants of dressing and small pieces of lettuce. “Not trying to say your issues aren’t relevant or important, just that he’s going through a lot too is all.”

“Yeah, I know.” Dean ran a hand down his face. “I’m just so fucking tired.”

“That’s understandable.” Sam nodded and reached over to grip his wrist for a moment. “Go home, get some rest. Maybe don’t go back tomorrow. Take a break. He won’t remember anyway.”

Dean flinched because Sam was right and he hated it.

I finally walked my five-year-old son through some of the crimes this country was founded upon in order to explain the Civil Rights Movement & celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s work today. I barely kept my composure showing Field the full video of I Have a Dream.

He could hardly get his head around the idea that racism exists. And I know he’ll never understand it, for it continues to confound me, and he’s better than I am, and lives in a better world than the one I grew up in. His school is taught in three languages. His closest friends aren’t mostly white, or even all boys.

“That’s SO LAME,” he said. Yep. It’s one of the dumbest, most useless, and most destructive ideas ever conceived. The best thing about racism, sexism, and homophobia is that those who hold to those diseased ideas will die, their numbers and power diminishing, if slowly, in the cold march of time and the hard light of day.

As a child, I remember being proud of the Stone Mountain shout-out in I Have a Dream, not knowing that it was one of the foundational locations of the KKK. I grew up buying glow-sticks and cotton candy there. I hiked to the top of that mountain in fourth grade. The idea of standing there, looking out from where those terrorists plotted their crimes now sickens me. Why didn’t anyone tell us?

There is more sad truth to impart as Field grows older. I think I’m particularly good at explaining things, and even better at explaining them to my son. I want him to know the truth early, and grow to grasp the complexities, rather than be blindsided by it like I was. But I believe he will become a man in a new dawn for our country, as so many fight inch by inch to make good on the promises of our founding documents.

I’m listening to the Mountaintop speech again now, myself. This one’s my favorite. “We as a people,” in the conclusion has always broken me, for Dr. King’s constant implication of inclusiveness. His hope for the future always included me and my son, living in a better nation, being made even better with every new foothold towards freedom in the Land we were all Promised.

Not nearly there yet. But climbing.

Getting out of the airport is still a hassle, even though it’s five in the fucking morning. He’s never been fond of mornings, especially before the sun’s up, but he hands his suitcases over and flags down a taxi with his normal exuberance, because what else is he going to do?

Beside, he made a promise.

He has the taxi stop in front of the apartment complex, pays without looking at the price (but judging by the driver’s face it’s more than what was going to be asked of him), and starts up the stairs.

Ugh, stairs. He’s too tired for this.

It’s been months, but he still remembers exactly where the room is. He grins when he finds it, knocks (loud, mind you, maybe a little too loud for not-even-six-why-am-I-awake in the morning), and waits.

get that flag out of my face

September 11 is my father’s birthday.

On that day, I was on the phone with him, frowning at the small TV hung up on the wall in our office. You seeing this, I asked, and he told me he was. An alarm went off in the building, and I said hey, I think something’s going on here and then we lost the line.

I figured he knew I was okay. I hadn’t said anything about being on the other side of the Potomac so there was no reason for him to think I wasn’t safe, but I worried more about him, and my mom, than I did the people I knew who were actually in proximity to danger.I ran into one of the hometown reporters on the Capitol steps and asked him to get a message back if he could.

Later, after the Members all went home, I walked from Rayburn past the White House (well, as close as you could get), through the GW campus to Georgetown, sat in the chapel at Holy Trinity until my ass was numb and then wandered up the hill to the Glover Park rowhouse. It was quiet, eerily so without air traffic.  The quiet before all the bad news to come.

I got a line out about 11:00 that night. Happy Birthday, Dad.

Our hometown football team is playing the neighboring town Friday night, and instead of wearing school colors everyone’s showing up in red, white, and blue.  They’re selling 9/11 gear in the Spirit Shop, or so the high school Twitter account tells me.

I typed about eighty different tweets in response to that one, but I didn’t send any of them.  I get that this year’s high school freshmen most likely weren’t even born when the towers fell, when the Pentagon burned. None of the kids in high school today have any context for what life was like before we surrendered our civil liberties in a desperate attempt to believe that the promise of safety is something more than a lie spoonfed us in exchange for our complacency.

Kind of hard to fit all that into a 140-character box anyway.

Besides, if I made my way to the 50-yard line screaming about manufactured terror and neverending war that benefits no one but the military-industrial complex and how the blood of thousands upon thousands upon thousands - ours and theirs - is on our hands and how the enemy is really ourselves I’d get arrested and the Carver County guys all look kinda mean, so.

I think I’ll just call the old man instead.

Hey! Are you excited about HTGAWM s3?

Excited is an understatement! :)

I will admit that the finale left me kind of reeling, especially the coliver moment (this post by Jules (@ramblesandreblogs) sums up my feelings perfectly).

But then came a relatively quiet hiatus, and I’ve just really missed watching the show and seeing all the characters every week.

We’ve gotten snippets of spoilers and promos that have made me more and more hopeful for what’s to come this season. It seems promising, and I can’t wait for this 12-day countdown to the premiere to just fly by! :)

In particular, I’m really looking forward to (listed in order of what I’m most excited about):

  • More Oliver!: The announcement that Conrad would become a regular in season 3 was one that really lifted my spirits! Oliver is such a complex character, and there’s so much more to him than meets the eye. It gave me hope that we might have a chance now to really delve into his character and understand his motivations, desires, etc., allowing us to get to know Oliver as his own person, as opposed to just Connor’s boyfriend.
  • More Quality Coliver!!: Okay, so this is more of a wish than an expectation, because I don’t actually have any solid spoilers to back this up, but I hope that with Conrad becoming a regular, this would also allow for more quality Coliver screen time, where they actually talk more? (lofty dreams, I know, but hope springs eternal - especially when your otp is on the line :D) I just really want things to come out into the open between them already (what with the murders and now Stanford), and I want them to grow in their relationship (which is really not very healthy right now, but we’ve all belabored this point countless times already, so I’ll just leave it at that).
  • A simpler and cleaner season: Last season was really messy, and it definitely suffered for it. We’ve all cribbed about it, and I’m glad to see the show itself acknowledging that as well. From the articles, I’m getting the sense that this might feel like a fresher and more streamlined season, with more of the depth I’ve really been craving to see.
  • Some semblance of normality: “Semblance” is the operative word here, because I’m not kidding myself, this show thrives on pushing its characters to the brink of the most unexpected and uncomfortable situations. That being said, Pete did say that he wants to explore the “everyday-ness of their relationships” and hopefully have a more “character-driven” season, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for that.
  • Seeing the Keating 5 in school!!!: Call me boring, but I love seeing scenes where the Keating 5 actually attend class. It’s fun to see them being law students. Maybe this also ties back to wanting some measure of normality back in the show. I am also intrigued about Annalise’s new Criminal Law Clinic and the pro bono cases! One thing I really missed last season was having a case-of-the-week, and now it looks like we’ll get to see the Keating 5 starting to take lead on their own pro bono cases in the courtroom as well!
  • Michaela’s Backstory: She’s such an amazingly fierce and empowering character, so any opportunity to see and learn more about her is very much welcome in my book!
  • Answers about Frank: Annalise, Bonnie, and Frank have always been this extremely tight and unbreakable unit, and now that dynamic has just been thrown into the fire. It will be interesting to see how they work this out, and it definitely doesn’t look like it’s going to be an easy fix from where the season 2 finale left off. Cue the drama and angst! ;)
