this is me trying to be creative and it totally fails

anonymous asked:

hey, can you break down the differences between the adventure zone and critical role for me? i haven't listened to either and now i'm curious

Oh gosh, okay. They’re delightful but… very different approaches to the same general idea (broadcasting a D&D game), and I think the fans of one show tend to have a sort of skewed impression of the other show, so here’s my thinking.

Just the basics, to begin with: The Adventure Zone started running in late 2014, and it’s an audio-only podcast in which the McElroy brothers and their dad start a brand-new D&D campaign from scratch. Critical Role started running in early 2015, and it’s a video podcast in which a bunch of best-friend voice actors started filming the D&D campaign they’d already been playing for years at home with the same characters. TAZ is (generally) prerecorded and lightly edited down, CR is 100% live. Both have a lot of howlingly funny and surprisingly touching moments, both get a lot more intense the more you get into them, and both are good shows that are a Good Time, especially when they make you feel things you didn’t sign up for. The main canon of TAZ is currently 56 one-hour-long episodes, with new episodes every two weeks, and CR is currently 85 four-hour-long episodes, with new episodes every week. Most of the reason for CR’s absurd length comes down to (a) three times as many players, and (b) no editing.

The DMs both put a ton of work into the world, but they also have very different approaches. Griffin (TAZ) is DMing for the first time, while Matt (CR) has talked about how DMing D&D games for the past 20 years is what got him interested in acting in the first place. The world of TAZ is much more of a sci-fi/fantasy hybrid, while CR sticks more to traditional fantasy.

TAZ plays fast and loose with the rules, which can be both a delight and a frustration for storytelling reasons—for instance, until the latest arc both spell slots and HP were not really tracked, which means (a) Griffin has had to come up with incredibly creative ways of introducing risk and limitations to the game, and (b) those incredibly creative ways can start to get pretty damn brutal. The mechanics of the game feel like an imposition on the story, most of the time—it’s rare that you get a dice roll that makes a huge difference to the plot (but when you do, as in the most recent episode, it’s pretty darn cool). As a result, the biggest spanner in the works of Griffin’s plans tends to be in the form of out-of-the-box thinking from his players, which they excel at; I think there is a tendency to railroad the plot as a result, but it’s a good story and it’s well worth a little bit of elbowing to keep everyone on track. Magical items also play a huge role, with viewers of the show submitting awesome new trinkets for the heroes of the story to use/abuse/completely forget about.

Because CR tilts more towards the rulebook (although Matt gets more than his fair share of shit for homebrewing and letting things slide and defaulting to the Rule of Cool), chance plays a much bigger role in the story. Matt’s simultaneously battling some incredibly creative players and dice that seem determined to roll as dramatically as possible. Entire subplots have been wiped out by a strategic roll, and in order to be able to adapt to that on the fly, Matt has to be hyper-prepared and have a lot of possible branching points. It’s absurdly open-world, especially now that the characters have the ability to travel instantly through different planes of existence, and Matt keeps pace with a story that feels more character-led than DM-led; railroading is practically nonexistent, which means you get incredible plot developments and super-deep characterization… but it also sometimes leads to long circular conversations trying to figure out what to do next. Because the players are all actors, there’s also a lot more that’s just straight-up improv theater: it’s not unusual (especially lately) to go for verrrry long stretches of riveting conversation without anybody rolling dice (I can think of a moment where Matt could’ve just had everyone fail a charisma saving throw against an NPC but instead just straight-up charmed them all in real life with words).

I’ll put it this way: CR is a basketball pickup game between friends who’ve been playing together so long that they kind of have their own home rules going and stick to them. TAZ is out there playing fuckin’ Calvinball. Both are great fun, but if you go into one expecting the other you’re in for a bad time.

Both shows have a lot of great NPCs, although Critical Role’s format gives them a lot more time and depth to shine (there are episodes where an NPC will have as much or more “screen time” than some of the player characters). Both shows have LGBT representation among player characters and NPCs alike that, while not perfect, is generally improving as the show goes on. For me personally, one of the more frustrating things about going from CR to TAZ was going from three female player characters and a metric fuckton of extremely deep characterization for all the female NPCs to no female player characters and many great and memorable female NPCs who nevertheless don’t get too much screentime or development just because of the the structure of the show.

TAZ is pretty shaky throughout the first arc (Griffin’s fighting a bit of an uphill battle getting everyone to sit down and actually play the game, which is funny in and of itself), but things slowly start to come together and the real potential of the show becomes clear once they break the heck out of the 5e Starter Set. I think the “Murder on the Rockport Limited” arc is what started to pull me in, and it’s not until the latest arc that I’m starting to get the character development I really crave in that show. Critical Role also takes a little while to find its footing, and to me the Briarwood arc (starting around episode 24) is where the mood of the show starts to solidify, with episode 40 and beyond really pushing from “this is cool, I’m enjoying how these interpretations of fantasy tropes are sometimes kinda unusual and off-the-wall!” to “how is this the most honest and genuine character development I’ve ever seen in media what the heck is happening here”.

So yeah. TAZ isn’t total chaos with no plot or effort put into it, CR isn’t a humorless wasteland of mathematical minutiae and rigid formulaic approaches. Both shows are great fun, both are IMO in an upswing and getting better and better as they go along, and I heartily recommend them both if you know what you’re getting into. Have fun!

Your hands feel like home

Request: Some college au lance and keith, where maybe keith gets like really badly sick (Up to you my friend how) and lance has to force him to stop going to classes/go to the hospital but keith gets so freaking stressed because he must have perfect grades (Klance if you want!!) Thank!!! C:

Summary: When Keith comes down sick, he assumes its nothing and carries on. But as classes and deadlines start to take their toll, it becomes more and more obvious to both Keith and his boyfriend Lance, that this ‘cold’ is anything but normal. How he made it to lectures with full blown pneumonia, he’ll never know, but something he does know is that no matter what, Lance will always be by his side.

‘Babe, did you get the coffee?’

Keith raised his head, pausing in his feeble attempt to remove his shoes without experiencing a rapid, unplanned introduction to the floor.

‘Huh?’ he called, a small wince seeping through his teeth at the irritable scrape in his throat. He had been feeling ill for days, sluggish and tired, with a growing wet cough that burned his airways and pounded his head like a hammer on an anvil. He knew he had a fever - that morning while Lance had still been sleeping he had snuck into his bathroom and borrowed his thermometer, only find that his temperature had risen to 38.5 degrees. But college was just too busy to take a day off from, and so he had popped a few fever reducers and paracetamol and gotten on with his day.

‘Coffee,’ Lance repeated, sticking his head out of the kitchen door to raise his eyebrows at Keith. ‘you said you were gonna stop by the store on your way here and pick some up. I’m nearly out,’

Keith groaned, leaning his head against the wall, second shoe all but forgotten. ‘Damnit.. I forgot, sorry. Want me to go back out and get some?’ he asked, but every fibre of his body was praying that Lance would say no. Apparently, whatever Gods were looking down on him chose to be kind, and Lance shook his head, at ease.

You tried to blame your restlessness on the faucet. The slow drops that echoed from your bathroom. A steady rhythm that matched your heartbeat. But in reality, couldn’t stop checking your phone. Reading and re-reading the same message over and over again. It had been at least an hour since he sent it.

It was like the text was haunting you. Causing your brain to be at war with your heart. You knew better than to respond. You knew that you would be playing with fire. You rolled to your side. The clock reading 5 AM. You had to be at work in 3 hours. You were screwed. The breathing technique you had learned during that one yoga class you took was failing you.

You reached over to you phone and scrolled to his message. Your fingers hovered over the delete button ask you contemplated what to do. He had already let you down once in the short time you knew if. If you could even consider what the two of you did as knowing each other. You took a deep breath and pressed delete.

The hour of sleep you ended up getting could only probably be considered a nap. You dragged your feet across the cold bedroom floor in search of clothes. You threw on the first sweater that smelled clean and a pair of jeans. The smell of coffee filled your nose as you walked towards the kitchen while you threw your hair into a ponytail. Thank god for programmable coffee pots, you thought to yourself as you poured your life source into a thermos.

I'm a little worried with the fact that you don't own Trish (or Glam to a lesser extent) even though she is a major part of your story. I've just seen so many oc artists have a falling out and then having to figure out what to do with the OCs they both use, and then one artist trying to pierce back together their story which relied heavily on their ex friends OC. What do you think you would do in the scenario(regardless how unlikely) that Trish's creator demanded you to not use Trish at all?

I can totally see why that would be concerning I personally have had that happen to a lot of my fav original pairings D’: BUT me and @goblinqueenbluebie have known each other for like 9 years and me and @munbbi for almost 10 years so it is really hard to imagine that, but id like to think I'm pretty creative story wise and I think I would be able to piece together my OC stories lol and if all else failed I could go back to the post-apocalyptic story Olly and Ruca originated from

Yoongi’s nights usually consisted of laughter and dancing, but it definitely was not him doing either of that. In fact, he was too busy yelling an annoyed “shut the fuck up” at the infatuated couple living adjacent to his apartment to ever engage in such frivolous activities. Why laugh and dance in his goddamn underwear when he could produce more music? He certainly could not understand how the people living next to him could ever waste such precious time on useless things such as love and happiness when you could be doing something productive. Like grumbling at the obnoxious sound of a squeaking bed from next door. If anyone asked if Yoongi was jealous, you would be sure to expect a proper bitching from him.

Inspirations, role models & more

I’ve received several questions concerning the above and so I thought I’d simply make an own post about it.
I love reading and just like my favourite author, Tess Gerritsen, has once told me: the best way to improve your own writing is to read a lot and try to understand how other writers do it.
And there is actually no one I admire as much as I admire Tess. I love everything about her work, the way she plays with words, creates tension from the first sentences to the end of her books to the very last and especially all the research she does for her stories to write as detailed as possible.
Another writer that has definitely helped me with my work is Chris Carter (Hunter & Garcia series). He has the ability to write dialogues in a way that make them appear very alive and reading his books actually feels like watching a movie because he can describe situations perfectly, without boring the reader with unnecessary details.
Moreover I really love the classics, like Goethe, who managed to find exceptionally good metaphors and images, or Schiller who never fails to amaze me.
And if you want to learn to write realistic, you should read some of Theodore Fontane’s books because he was one of the first to write integrally.
Concerning puns and plays on words, I also get inspired by Shakespeare (honestly, I was snorting SO LOUD whenever I e.g. read of Mercutio).
There is a reason why those writers are still considered amongst the best and as a young writer, you can definitely learn from them.
(If you are willing to really put effort in something but end up if a totally new idea of writing in general, try Kafka haha).

When it comes to writing poetry/poems, it may come as a surprise who inspires me the most; the queen herself, Lana del Rey.
I actually believe that she is one of the greatest poets of our time and the way she can create a certain atmosphere (I love the nostalgia) and write about love without ever just fulfilling a cliché amazes me.
I wish I’ll some day reach a point where my work affects the reader the way her songs affect me.

Of course, there are many more amazing authors and musicians which inspire my writing but if I’d list them all, it would probably take hours.
Therefore, this is just a short collections.
All the love,
Johanna

I really love AU fics, so I want to know what are your favourites (chaptered). But like really AU changing a lot the story (like That's Not My Name, You Don't Even Know Me, Half Blade and Half Silk... you know what I mean?) And I'm sending you love and luck <3

Thanks love :’) I’m sending both right back! ♥

Listen, you are lucky you only asked for chaptered fics, because otherwise this would be like 10 times longer (not that it’s not long as it is lmao). Have fun!

P.S. Those 3 you named are some of my favorites too, but I feel like I still need to list them anyway, I’m sure someone else will appreciate it ;)

CHAPTER SIX

It wasn’t until Jones upended the toolbox, its contents flying everywhere as he swore so loudly she could hear it from inside the cab, that Emma finally sighed and cracked open her door.

She hopped out and slammed the door after, crossing her arms and shivering at the chill, rounding the front of the rig. Not that it was that much warmer inside the cab, but at least there wasn’t a piercing wind, cutting through her coat and hat like they were nothing, driving tiny specks of frigid rain into her flesh.

hello appblr world!! I recently graduated high school (c/o 2015), and I will be attending Duke University in the fall, hoping to pursue a double major in English and Political Science with a minor in either Psychology or Neuroscience :’)

applying to colleges was one of the most stressful experiences of my life, so I really want to help out anyone who is now currently feeling those tidal waves of anxiety and panic. my intention is to help and hopefully alleviate any nerves about applying to college (in America)

the summer before my senior year, every time I read the word ‘college’, my heart rate spiked & I started internally freaking out. for me, the whole process was super overwhelming, and my distaste for the education system (specifically, the american education system) quadrupled. I remember feeling incredibly confused and alone because I didn’t know where to start, so here is a lil guide thingy!!!

THE SUMMER BEFORE SENIOR YEAR:

  • make sure and finish all your summer assignments – I know that college applications are a strong focus, but get what you’re supposed to do out of the way first + you will feel less overwhelmed and more productive
  • start making a list of colleges that you want to apply for – my best suggestion is to categorize them into safety schools, match schools, and reach schools
    • ref: generally people look at a school’s admitted profile (on the school website) and compare stats, which means gpa, rank, test scores, etc. if you can, it’s also helpful to read into their supplementary essay prompts and examples to give you a general idea of what a college is looking for (ex. UChicago is notoriously known for their quirky supplementary essay prompts; famous past prompts include: Find X, Where’s Waldo?, Why are you here?, What’s so odd about odd numbers?)
  • do lots of research on schools you’re interested in – ok now I know that reading these long paragraphs on school websites can get really tiring, so try watching some youtube videos or looking the school up on reddit, and be sure to talk to current students to get a first-hand account
    • look at location, diversity, the programs offered in relation to what you’re interested in, size, public vs private institutions, sports, social scene, political affiliations, financial aid offered, study abroad, etc)
  • try and figure out a general field of what you’re interested in – you do NOT need to know what you want to major in, but when you’re applying for colleges, you will most likely need to select an intended major; if not, you will apply as undeclared, which has its advantages and disadvantages!! but even with an intended major, most colleges don’t make you officially select a major until sophomore, sometimes even junior year, so it is okay to not know what you wanna do when you’re 16/17/18!!! but explore and reflect and try and figure out a general field of what you’re interested in. do NOT use your grades as a sole factor in deciding; if you are good at math and have really high grades, that does not necessarily mean that you should be a math major - pursue your passions!! if you know that you like writing and reading, then consider a major in english or literature. if you think you’d like to work with computer software, then consider a major in computer science or computer engineering. ALSO know that there are so many potential majors + even the option to create your own at some universities!! and also know that many people change majors, and that is totally ok :)
  • in august, common app will open, which is what many colleges use for the application process. certain schools will have specific websites themselves (i.e. MIT, University of California schools, etc) – if you make an account BEFORE august, it will be deleted by then, so be careful!! now, when you make ur account, you can add schools and you can look at their supplements and stuff. be sure and note deadlines!!

DURING SENIOR YEAR:

  • keep up with your school work – senioritis is REAL AND ALIVE, my friends. you will think it’s really bad first semester, but then it just explodes into a frenzy of apathy and indifference second semester + you basically don’t care about anything; this is normal, but still try and focus. colleges can rescind their acceptances, altho it’s not likely unless you suddenly fail everything, but overall, it’s just important to still try
  • keep good relations with your teachers (both current teachers and past teachers) & decide on which to ask for a rec – for many schools, they will require at least one teacher recommendation, so you must decide between which teachers you wanna ask. I would advise picking the teachers you’ve always had good relations with, and in a subject where you’re really passionate about learning the material. when asking, be respectful of deadlines (aka don’t ask them to write you a rec two days before the deadline. they are people too), and be sure and say thank you. if you can, make them a card or make/buy them a little gift; I promise you, they’ll appreciate it!!
    • if the school you’re applying to requires multiple teacher recs: many people advise asking teachers of different subjects to emphasize your well-roundedness – you can do that or you can ask teachers of one subject that you’re really interested in; weigh your options and politely ask. asking teachers can be really scary sometimes, especially if you’re very shy, but they’re there to help you and it’ll all work out :)
  • write a common app essay (if applicable) – common app has 4 prompts that you can choose from, and then you’ll submit that to all the colleges ur applying to thru common app. this is very important. if you’re not a good writer, do not fret!! most of the time, the subject of these essays are very personal. a lot of people write about some trying time in their lives, but plenty of other people write creatively about something small, but important. remember that essays are a way for admission directors to get to know the real you :’) that sounds super cliche, but keep in mind that you are more than ur gpa and ur sat/act score. prove that to them by writing about something you care about
    • if you are ok with it (and it’s totally ok to not be ok with it), ask someone you trust to read over it and edit it. a lot of people ask their language arts teachers just bc they’ll help with grammar and structure, but asking other trusted adults and peers will be helpful too!! keep in mind the potential of bias from parents + friends though
    • you will most likely write your common app essay multiple times. you will have lots of drafts & it can be really stressful, but patience. you will be so happy when you finally finish
  • finalize your college list and start writing supplementary essays – many colleges will have supplementary parts to the application on top of common app. this can range from totally separate essays to lil short-answer questions, so be prepared and give yourself plenty of time to write!! just as with your common app essay, getting feedback can be super helpful
    • also remember that many colleges accept arts supplements (this range depends on the college, but I’ve seen colleges accept writing, dance, music, visual art, etc) & these fall under a different deadline, usually. if you want to submit in an art supplement, you may have to submit in your essays and everything earlier
    • OH ALSO some colleges will have an early decision or early application deadline – this is basically an earlier deadline for ur app in exchange for an earlier decision. be careful on the difference between EA and ED!!! ED is BINDING, which means that if you get in, you have to go (you can get out of it for financial reasons tho), and EA is NONBINDING, which means that even if you get in, you can decide to go to another school
  • submit in your transcript and any test scores you need – different schools have different policies, but most fall under either the SAT + SAT 2 scores OR ACT + writing scores; I would suggest contacting the counseling office asap, but be super nice!! counselors are there to help you through this process, but it can be really overwhelming for them too
    • pay close attention to whether or not ur college requires a counseling rec or not
  • double check everything for small details – some colleges accept peer recs, but sometimes they don’t publicize that detail very much so just be observant! same with priority deadlines for interviews; you may have to submit in your app earlier if you want priority for an interview
  • accept ur interview opportunities – meet with an alumni or go on campus if you can and give an interview!! they’re really helpful sometimes bc it provides the school with a look into who you are as a person, not just as a student. also, from my experience, the alumni are super nice and really interested + it’s nice to just talk and nerd out about the school you like :’)
  • submit ur apps (hehehe of course!)
  • apply for scholarships – this is something that I wish I had taken more seriously, but really, college is expensive and scholarships can make all the difference. talk to your counselors if you don’t know where to start & literally just google for them!! be careful you are eligible for the ones you’re interested in and make sure you submit everything in by the deadline too

AFTER SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATIONS:

  • distract yourself like crazy – the wait is horrible and the anticipation is killer, if you’re anything like me at least. hang out with your friends and just enjoy your senior year!! this is the last of high school & i promise you that as much as you may hate it (if you do hate it), you will feel bittersweet by the end of the year. so make memories and make the best out of the time you have left in high school
  • check your email – colleges oftentimes send you emails if they need you to send them anything more, or they’ll update you about things. they’ll usually also email you with where you need to go to check your decision
  • don’t let the senioritis take over ur soul

RECEIVING YOUR DECISIONS:

  • acceptances – YAY CONGRATULATIONS!!! be proud of yourself and know that you deserve it 100000%, wholeheartedly. they did not make a mistake, and you ARE that amazing. celebrate your accomplishment, but also be humble. it’s likely that you have a friend that either got waitlisted or denied, so be careful what you say
  • rejections – i’m sorry, my dear!! but you are not meant to be at that school, and that is okay. even if it is your dream school. this does not reflect ur self-worth & this def does not mean that you aren’t good enough. this simply means you aren’t a good fit for the school!! most people have to deal with rejections, so take some time for yourself. eat some comfort food and watch some tv. read a book if that relaxes you. take a bath with lots of bubbles. do whatever is necessary to cleanse yourself of any negative thoughts you may have, and then realize that you can accomplish SO much wherever you end up!! UR A BRILLIANT SHINING STAR & I HAVE FAITH IN YOU :’)
  • waitlisted – being waitlisted (or deferred during EA/ED, which basically pushed you back to the regular decision time) sucks so much bc you just want to know; take a deep breath and consider all your options. make backup plans. if you’re really interested in the school, email them and tell them that!! make sure if you want to be on the waitlist, that you notify them of that (usually via mail or online somehow). if you don’t wanna be on the waitlist, make sure you take yourself off so you give everyone else a better chance :)
  • weigh your options through careful, careful consideration – there are so many factors that may come into play when finally deciding on which college to go to
    • money is usually a huge factor, and sometimes you won’t be able to go to a great school even though you got in bc it’s too expensive. but do not be sad about this. give yourself time to feel sad, but don’t let it dictate your life!! you need to stay logical and rational. think long-term. sit down with your guardians and discuss the option of taking out loans and so forth. if you’re planning on pursuing grad school afterwards, you need to keep that in the picture as well
    • talk to current-students and compare important things – if you’re really big on community service, ask the current students at different schools how it is there. this applies for everything!! first-hand accounts are incredibly helpful. you can also consider emailing professors of departments you’re interested in for a more professional and academic perspective
    • look into their programs and try and avoid putting too much emphasis on rankings - be specific and read up on the department that you’re interested and compare them with different schools. don’t blindly let an overall ranking mislead you!! (i.e. Duke is ranked higher overall than Georgia Tech, but Georgia Tech is ranked MUCH higher in many of its engineering programs)
    • talk to people – talk to your parents. talk to your counselors, your teachers, your peers. basically everyone is talking about college your senior year, so take advantage of it. talk with other people and get second, third, fourth, fifth opinions. expand your mind and consider everything!!

senior year is this giant conglomeration of sweat and tears and happiness and anger and jealous and confusion, so do not worry if you are feeling overwhelmed!! it is normal, and i promise that everyone has felt scared about the future at some point. but with that, be confident in yourself. you’re absolutely lovely + you will go far in life!!

ok 1) I apologize for how absurdly long this post is and 2) I am here to help if ANYONE has ANY questions about anything!! literally I would love giving advice, so feel free to msg me anytime (my main account is @naiveety though, so whichever works)

ALSO if anyone is interested in Duke, please please please come to me & I will help!!!

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE APPLYING TO COLLEGE & MAY YOU ALL HAVE A WONDERFUL, BRILLIANT FUTURE :’)

Cease, River.

*Trigger Warning: self harm and suicide is in the following chapter. DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE NEGATIVELY IMPACTED BY THIS SORT OF THING.*

It was just a little white line, but it would stay there for the rest of his life as a total reminder of what he had done.

It was honestly sort of silly, and felt even more so each time he had to share the story with a new counsellor.

A friend who cared.
A lover who asked.

Unless you were looking, you probably wouldn’t see it. The scar was maybe half an inch long, give or take.

But it held a dreadful story.

Lance stared at the little bracelet he held in his hands. He had gotten the stupid thing at an arcade for thirty tickets or something.

It was made of those ‘emo’ square things that were usually on belts, only this was one row of black and white.

Lance didn’t even know why he had gotten it, instead of another candy piece or something.

He didn’t know how attached he would become to the thing, unfortunately.

It had just been another hard day.

Tests failed.
Flaws shoved in his face by household members, the usual.

Lance had become so apathetic to the ordeal though that now it had no effect on him.

He was a walking and sometimes talking robot that went about his daily routine, never changing.

Now, Lance wouldn’t say his emotions were gone. Definitely not.

It had become, more so, that the emotions he did feel were just routine.

Constant anxiety the caused him to fidget and his chest to feel tight.

For bad thoughts to creep in.

That’s how Lace had discovered what this bracelet could do. In that moment.

The blue red boy had only been fidgeting with the thing when he realized he was bending back something sharp.

The bent material that kept the squares in place. It completely captivated him.

Lance did not know why the thought crossed his mind, but it did as he bent the tip from the bracelet and he stared.

He’d heard of cutting.
Some of his friends mentioned it in their past, but had always overcome it.

Lance knew it generated a feeling that wasn’t as routine as his entire life.

Physical pain.

Now, Lance knew that this would lead him to a complicated road that would give him more anxiety than he was previously dealing with.

You have to cover the scars.
You have to keep it secret.

So many burdens that came with doing this; and the decision making process.

What if he cut too deep?

Lance didn’t necessarily want to die, yet.

But the thought that he would feel something besides his day to day anxiety and depression drove him further.

He started on the top of his left arm.
Lance wasn’t sure why he had picked there, he just sorta went for it.

The boy made vertical scratches, about 7-8 of them, but they weren’t very deep.

It was a feeling. But maybe it was too much for him right now. He shook.

During the school day Lance wore the bracelet, but found himself scratching words or sometimes just lines into his arms with a pencil.

He laughed remembering the way people used to get creeped out by it, others asked him why he did it.

Lance didn’t know, he just found it creative and he liked it. The marks went away by the time he got home anyway.

Lance recalled when he transitioned from the pencil, back to the bracelet. It was a hard time for him.

He recalled the time when it went from light scratches on his wrist, to when he had to move to his thighs because he had gotten caught.

Oh how he had gotten caught.
His bracelet was quickly taken from him.

The first time Lance drew significant amount of blood, he was thrilled by the sight.

It hurt of course, but just seeing the blood like that gave him a sort of adrenaline rush that he just couldn’t get any other way.

Dopamine flooded his brain.

It never got better from there, but he always did get better at hiding it.

When he stayed at the Garrison, it got significantly worse. By a lot.

But Lance knew when too much was too much, and never let that sharp object dig deeper.

Without the bracelet, Lance had taken to stealing razors from the generals or in closets. Basically whatever he could.

When it came lights out, Lance would sit up in his room, blankets over him, and just blindly cut at his thighs.

He would go at it until his fingers were sticky and the blade end slick with dried and new blood.

Lances poker face during the whole ordeal was better than any legit poker player.

You would never guess what he was doing to himself, and no one did.

Until it was too late.

“Lance! Stop acting dumb, get back in formation! We trying to win this war, not have YOU lose it for us!” Allura shouted over the intercom of the castle.

The blue paladin flinched.

“You’ve hit me more times than you’ve hit any of the targets, some ‘sharpshooter’ you are.” Keith grumbled.

Shiros sigh is the best thing heard, “We’ve been training a lot today, how about we all go back inside for rest.”

He said it as an order.

When they all made it back, the mood was not positive. Everyone was tired and annoyed.

Why couldn’t this battle be over yet?

The blue eyed paladin excused himself to his room when asked about joining everyone for dinner.

'Stupid stupid stupid…’

Lance shook slightly, and familiar feelings started to work through his bloodstream.

Anxiety, from whatever he felt was gonna be said about him next.
Depressed, from the truth he knew behind the words spoken to him earlier.
Anger, that he had to feel this way.
Numb, because none of this was new.

Hot tears filled his eyes as he entered his room, letting the door close behind him and he sunk to the floor.

Useless.
Annoying.
In the way.
Stubborn.

The hatred Lande felt for his entire self grew stronger and he squeezed his eyes shut tight as the tears fell.

Lance took tufts of hair into his fists to pull at them in annoyance. Why couldn’t he do anything right?

His heartbeat picked up and Lance snivelled, he needed a distraction and quickly.

It was getting too much.

Useless.
Annoying.
In the way.
Stubborn.
Useless.
Annoying.
In the way.
Stubborn.
Useless.
Annoying.
In the way.
Stubborn.

U S E L E S S.
A N N O Y I N G.
I N  T H E  W A Y.
S T U B B O R N.

Lance flung open his small dresser of clothes and desperately dug through its contents for any of the razors and broken forks he had.

A cut to his finger allowed him to find him pretty quickly, and his pulse spiked.

Blood.
Pain.

Lance wheezed as the tears fell hot and and fast, streaming down his cheeks yet he made no sound.

He was done with all of this.

All of the names, the struggles.
Lance remembered when he didn’t want to die, at least not yet. Yet had come.

Lance wanted to do what benefitted the team. Not what he thought was best. For himself or the others.

If he were gone, then the team could find a better suited paladin for Voltron and they could finally beat Zarkon.

Go home.

They would never get that chance to improve if Lance were here, he decided.

The blue paladin backed himself up into the corner of his room, shaking all over from this attack he was having.

The blood on his finger trickled down to his wrist and Lance was finally able to do it.

Lance didn’t know how many vertical lines were in his arms when his legs gave out on him.

He knocked over his dresser in the process of trying to stay standing.

Lance wasn’t scared, but it was taking longer than he had anticipated and the boy didn’t feel like being caught.

It was for them, and if they stopped him his plan to what was best would be ruined.

He finally fell to his side, dropping his wound inflicted and paid attention to the way everything got fuzzy.

Maybe now he would be a hero.
Sure, at his own expense, but Lance had chosen this and it was his choice.

Heroes  have to make the tough choices, don’t they?

It was for the better.

There was a knocking on his door, his name being called. Of course he couldn’t answer.

He looked down to his wrists, where blood pulsed out in rhythm to his dying pulse. Lance hoped the others would wash his jacket before they got rid of his body.

The door burst open, Keith stood there with Shiro behind him. Both froze in their tracks and their faces dropped.

Lance’s eyes closed, his breath left him.
His heart stuttered to a stop like a dying engine of a motorcycle running out of gas.

For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one. A quote by Khalil Gibran.

The blue paladin has ceased.

Anon requested competitive!Minghao where you get into a contest and you’re kind of mean to each other during because you want to win, but you end up really respecting each other.

You were friends with Mingyu first, and now you’re friends with the rest of Seventeen through his introduction. You love them all, but the boy who seems to impact you most strongly is a certainly lanky member of the performance team. The one who takes any chance to dab, make a biting hilarious comment, or quickly reassure a sad friend in his no-nonsense voice. The one who is an intriguing balance of cool and cute. With perfect arms and a smile to die for. But also the most infuriating person you had ever met. Minghao.

You find your thoughts drifting to him even now, as you walk into the dorms with Mingyu. Your eyes linger on a familiar jacket hanging on a hook, and you remembered how unfairly good it looks on its owner. You almost want to try it on just to prove you would look better. Mingyu laughs.

“Oh god, you’re so obvious.” he says.

the art of numbers

Title: the art of numbers

Pairing: Choi Seunghyun/Reader

Summary: Youth doesn’t depend on numbers and Seunghyun learns that lesson quite late in life.

Request: Seunghyun has a girlfriend younger than him.

Numbers, Seunghyun even hates the mere thought of said word. If people asked him how great he did with numbers, then the answer would be that he doesn’t even understand them properly. Back in high school, he failed almost all his math classes and there’s a possibility that he promised to never have anything to deal with them for the rest of his life. Luckily, he didn’t end up studying math, instead following his dreams with music and art, which were subjects that he understood rather excellently; however, there were certain numbers that he really paid attention to. For example, how old he was getting. Seunghyun was barely reaching his thirties and that –to some- is extremely young, but when he’s already at his early thirties, it’s difficult to not feel bad when his girlfriend is at her early twenties. Not that it was much, but he felt extremely old, he doesn’t even believe that time went by that fast.

He remembers the times when he was twenty-something years old, drinking for the first time legally, trying out different hairstyles, getting to start his career. Seunghyun remembered that moment perfectly and he thinks back to them as something great, but he can’t help and feel a little insecure. He had his life planned out, in the matter of years he might want to start a family, he even might have to look at his hair closely to check if there’s any white locks and she was still young. Wouldn’t she prefer someone younger? Perhaps someone who wasn’t so comfortable with sitting around at home and doing nothing. He thinks of that as he continues to sketch on his notebook, Jiyong playing a track over and over again as he hears the voice of the younger Seunghyun.

“Are you gonna sit there and draw all night?” He asks and the oldest only look up at him, nodding his head quickly before returning his gaze to the –quite funny- sketch of an animal he was doing. The youngest sits right beside him, falling quiet for a few seconds as he looks at how Seunghyun was drawing, but the silence is cut short when he asks a question that was normal for him. “How’s your girlfriend?” He shouldn’t have been mad when he heard those words, but he really was a little bit saddened at the moment. He stops sketching so he can breathe out a small answer.

“Don’t even mention her.” Youngbae stops looking down at his phone when he hears those words. The two of them were really a good couple, they didn’t fight often, so if they ever got to break up…then it was going to be a big surprise.

Opinion time: YA for adults

Please forgive the length of this rant, but I’d really like to hear everyone’s thoughts on this topic. I see a lot of articles asking why so many adults are reading YA and what on earth is developmentally wrong with them. So… where are the fun books for adults then? (I’m not going into the whole “why are adults reading YA” mess here or asking what constitutes YA – I’m wondering why there aren’t more YA-type books featuring adults and marketed towards them).

I don’t particularly want to constantly read about teens, angst, and high school. Those are often the aspects of the books that I have to consciously work my way around in order to get to the story I want. But those of us who grew up reading YA and are now adults still want the adventure, escapism, creative worlds, and hope that those books inspire.

I have absolutely zero interest in reading about depressing careers, unhappy marriages, bratty children, cheating partners, failed dreams, and other “realistic” adult scenarios. I mean, not everyone who is single at 30 is upset about it. Possibility, adventure, and a sense of a malleable future do not come grinding to a halt at age 20 as we accept the reality that life sucks from there on out… and even if we are stuck in rather depressing lives, THAT IS WHY SO MANY OF US READ. To escape.

YA books have also become absolutely amazing at creating strong female characters, creative worlds, fast-paced plots, solid diversity, and stories that are just straight up fun to read. But “adult” fantasy books are super long-winded in their descriptions and don’t really write characters I can relate to. Plus, I don’t want to spend a week reading some heavy book I can barely lift. I want the pretty covers and shorter length of a YA book that I can finish in one sitting, but with older characters. Maybe that makes me immature, but I’m not going to stop watching Disney movies anytime soon either.

I really don’t think every adult reads YA because they want to “recapture their youth” or whatever… I think we just want a fast, fun read for a change. YA authors can create an entire strong world in like ¼ of the time it takes most “adult” books to describe a field outside the castle. Books targeted at teens are honestly some of the better stories I’ve found, so I’d love to see some of the YA elements expand into adult fiction.

I know YA books often need to focus on characters at a crossroads who are figuring out who they want to be versus who society wants them to be. Pretty sure this is a universal theme for all ages, though. The majority of adults I know could still use some plot arc where they evolve in both self-knowledge and awareness of the world. So why can’t we take the fast pace, strong characters, and concise plots that are so awesome in YA books and just add more mature characters?

Also: sexy times are not always necessary and are not the automatic recipe for “maturity.” The current “New Adult” books are probably my least favorite category in existence. I’d love to read about characters in their twenties, but I want an actual fun story and not just some excuse for a million sex scenes. And the characters… good grief. Like is it like some rule that when you reach your early 20s you lose all emotional stability and/or self-respect and are permanently scarred by your past? The New Adult books I’ve read have been disasters. Most of the guys are self-loathing abusive sociopaths (and some seriously disturbing behavior is romanticized). And most stories are still about dealing with a depressing, realistic life. So, no, the New Adult attempt to address my age range is not the answer I’m looking for.

I’m also tired of hearing that adults can’t be in these awesome YA-type plots because they’re tied down by responsibilities with kids or careers. I’m sorry, have you not seen Spy Kids?! Take the whole family on your adventure! Don’t tell me this isn’t realistic because guess what — neither are dragons, time travel, aliens, sparkly vampires, teen boys who look like they’re 25, or the idea that every other girl is a missing princess. But it’s still fun.

Adult fantasy novels take themselves way too seriously for me. I just want to see a YA-type plot for all ages. I would totally read about a middle-aged lawyer who gets swept into some epic paranormal adventure with a case and takes their whole family with them. Suspend reality, stop treating the child like a burden, and turn them into a little secret agent. Or give me a story about a bunch of genius hacker mothers in a dystopian world (because it’s possible someone besides a group of attractive teens could save the world). Why can’t the stereotypical lost princess in a fantasy world be in her late twenties? If she’s married, she can take her husband with her on the quest (because plots can continue after people get together and function without the angst of a love triangle). Harry Potter was so much fun because adult characters played a huge part too and didn’t spend the entire plot “out of town” or whatever.

I’m aware I’m coming up with really poor examples here but that is why I’m not an author. I’m just a reader who’s tired of trying to shift my expectations to cram myself into the wrong target audience. I’m not an English major who’s debated this topic a million times, nor someone who honestly knows much about publishing. I’ve just read over 500 YA books and would really like to read something fast-paced, creative, and fun with characters my age for a change. YA books are awesome and I’m thrilled that adult fiction exists for those who love it, but there’s this this big hole here for a new category of books I want to read.

So many aspiring adult authors have contacted me on Goodreads or Tumblr to say they’re confused about what to call their book if it has a 27 year old bisexual Indian princess assassin in a 400-page book that doesn’t spend forever on worldbuilding. It’s not the YA age range or the typical adult material, so they get rejected by publishers… but those are the exact books so many of us want to read!

I mean, there’s a reason A Court of Mist and Fury kind of took over the world. Sarah J Maas gets what teens and 20-somethings want to read. All of her books have incredibly creative and complex worlds with mature characters & strong heroines who face serious, realistic issues in a context that’s still adventurous and fun. I can’t even count how many messages I get each week asking for book recommendations that are similar to her series. And I’ve got nothing.

I might rephrase this rant to be somewhat more coherent as time goes by, but for now I’m just curious to see what others think!

Here’s some of the most amazing and invaluable advice you’ll most-likely ever get from one of my good colleagues and legends in comics/gaming, creator JOE MADUREIRA. It’s what i’ve been preaching to you aspiring artists since i arrived on DA, but i think his POV says it perfectly:

*WARNING: SOME MATURE LANGUAGE*

“DO YOU REALLY WANT TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST?

Or a successful WORKING PROFESSIONAL?

Believe it or not there is a difference. I’m not usually a soapbox type guy, I don’t like instructing people, and I think I’m a terrible teacher. But hey, it’s Friday and I’m in a strange mood. So here goes:

I’ve noticed that a good number of my fans happen to be aspiring artists themselves. This is for all you guys. I get asked constantly: "Where should I go to school?” “What classes should I take?” “What should I study for anatomy?” “What pencils and paper do you use?” “Should I be working digitally now instead of traditionally?” “How do I fix my poses? Learn composition? Perspective?” “When am I going to develop my own style?” “Who were your influences?” “Teach me how to draw hands!” The list goes on…

Here’s the deal. All of that stuff *is* important, and it may nudge you in the right direction. A lot of it you will discover for yourself. What works best for one person doesn’t work for another. That’s the beauty of art. It’s personal. It’s discovery. DON’T WORRY ABOUT ALL THAT CRAP!

Instead I’m going to answer the questions that you *SHOULD* be asking, but aren’t. These are things that have only recently occurred to me, after doing this for 20+ years. These things seem so obvious, but apparently they elude a lot of people, because I am surprised at how many ridiculously talented artists are ‘failing’ professionally. Or just unhappy. The beauty of what I’m about to tell you is that it doesn’t matter what field you’re in or what your art style is.

In no particular order:

1) DO WHAT YOU LOVE. If you are passionate about what you’re doing, it shows. If you’re having fun, it shows. If you’re bored, IT SHOWS. Some guys are able to work on stuff they have zero interest in, and still pull off great work, but I find that when I do this my motivation takes a huge hit. And Motivation is key. Money is not a great motivator. It’s temporary like everything else. And honestly, I’ve gotten paid the most money for some of the shittiest work I have ever done. That may sound awesome, but it’s not. And here’s why…

2) You MUST stay Excited and Motivated. Have you noticed that there are days you can’t draw a god damned thing? And some days you feel like you can draw anything? It’s 4am but you don’t notice because you are in the ZONE. Your hand is racing ahead of your mind and you can do no wrong?! Maybe it’s some new paper you got. Or a new program you’ve been wanting to try out. Or you just found some amazing shit on DeviantArt, or watched some movie that just makes you want to run straight to your board. This relates to the above because while it is possible to involve yourself in projects you aren’t excited about—maybe you need the cash, or think it will look good on your resume, whatever it is—it’s not going to last. You need to stay fresh. Expose yourself to new things. New techniques. You should be getting tired of your own shit on a fairly regular basis. Otherwise other people will.

3) Check your Ego. If you think you’re the shit, you’re already doomed. You may be really, really good at what you do, but there’s someone better. Sorry. There’s always plenty to learn, even for us old dogs. So when I meet young upstarts who have this sense of entitlement, or a know-it-all attitude, I just have to laugh. Some of the biggest egos I’ve ever witnessed were from people who have accomplished the least. Meanwhile, most guys who are supremely talented AND successful, and have EARNED the RIGHT to have an ego and throw their weight around, don’t. Why is that? It’s because…

External image

4) RELATIONSHIPS ARE IMPORTANT. This may be one of the biggest lessons I’ve had to learn. Early on, I didn’t value my relationships with people. Creatively or otherwise. I felt like I didn’t need anyone’s help and I could figure everything out on my own. Let’s face it, many of us become artists because we are reclusive, social misfits. We’d rather stay inside and draw shit than go outside and play. We like to live inside our own minds. Why not?! It’s awesome in there! And sometimes we don’t want to let other people in. But like I said—you can’t do it alone. I can honestly say that as much as I try to stay current, as much as I try to push my work and draw kick ass shit that will excite people, I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for all the other people I’ve met and learned from along the way. Guys who pulled strings for me. Took risks on me. Believed I was the right guy for the job. You need to manage your relationships. You need to network, and meet people. Drawing comics is still a pretty good place for reclusive types—but if you want to work in big studios—Making games, Films, animation, basically any other type of job on the planet, you’d better start making some connections. Be likeable. Be professional. That doesn’t mean be an opportunistic ladder climber. Fake people lose in the end. Be yourself, but be professional. It’s no secret that when people are hiring, our first instinct is to bring in people we know. It’s human nature. I don’t like unknowns, even if their portfolio is awesome. If we have a mutual connection, if they have great things to say about you, you’re in. If you have AMAZING artwork to show, and I call your last employer and they tell me what a pain in the ass you are to work with, you’re done. Talent and skill only get you so far. I am literally amazed at how often I meet guys that are total assholes and think they are going to get anywhere.

5) Here’s the BIG ONE. The greatest obstacle you will ever have to overcome IS YOURSELF. And the Fear that you are creating in your own head. Stay positive. Stop defeating yourself. There are artists I know that are so damn good they make me pee my pants. I look up to these mofos. I study their shit and I want to draw like them. And they are almost NEVER working on their DREAM project. And—big surprise, they aren’t happy in their job. “Why NOT?! WTF is WRONG WITH YOU?!” is usually my reaction. And the answer is almost always “The market isn’t great right now” “Other stories/games/comics like mine don’t do very well” “The shit that’s hot right now is nothing like mine, It’s just going to fail.” “I’m not sure I’m good enough.” “I need the money.” “Too Risky.” “I tried it before and failed. ” It doesn’t matter what words they use, they are afraid for one reason or another. I know. I’ve been there.

But here’s the deal. YOU NEED TO TAKE RISKS. Guess what? YOU ARE MOST LIKELY GOING TO FAIL. If you want it—REALLY want it, that won’t stop you. You will learn A LOT. My good friend Tim constantly jokes about how I jump out of planes without a parachute and worry about the landing on the way down. You may think that I’m lucky, that it’s easy for me to say because I’m already successful, that I’m in a different situation than you all are. But it’s not true. Risk is risk, no matter what level you’re at. If you’re already successful, you just take even bigger risks. But they never go away. Everything in life is Risk vs. Reward. Not just in your career. LIFE. You’d better get used to it.

I didn’t know what the hell I was doing when I got into comics. I left the #1 selling book at the time ( Uncanny X-men ) to work on Battle Chasers during a time when 'Conan’ was about the only fantasy comic people knew. And no one was buying it. I wanted to work in games, so I started a game company. I had NO IDEA WTF I was doing. I just wanted it, really bad. We tanked. It failed. No big surprise. But the people I worked with got hired elsewhere and rehired me. I started ANOTHER game Company. We had 4 people and a dream, and some publishers wouldn’t even meet with us, because their 'next gen console’ teams had 90+ people on them. I literally got hung up on. “Stick to handheld games, it’s smaller, maybe you can handle that…” one MAJOR publisher told us. I don’t blame them. But we didn’t let it stop us. Thank god we didn’t listen to them. Vigil was born. Darksiders happened, AND we got to make a sequel. It stands shoulder to shoulder with the best games in the industry, and the most elite and experienced game dev studios in the world. How is that possible?!!! Hardly any of us had even worked on a console game before. I’ll be honest, I was thinking we would fail the whole time. I just didn’t care. If I had to play the odds on this one, I’d bet against us.

External image

Why am I telling you all this shit? This is not me patting myself on the back. It’s just stuff that has somehow only dawned on me recently when it’s been staring me in the face for so long. I feel like I need to wake you guys up!!! I’ve been limiting myself. I’ve gotten afraid. I’ve taken less risks. I saw my career going places I didn’t want to go. I wasn’t happy and I wasn’t excited. And I’ve realized, that all that stuff I just talked about is the reason I am where I am today. Not because I have a manga style, or I draw cool hands, or there’s energy in my drawings, or all the other things people rattle off to me. There are other guys that do all that same shit, and do it better. And amazingly, those same guys constantly tell me “Man, I wish I could do what you are doing.” “SO DO IT!!!!!” PLEASE listen to me—because I want you guys to make it. I want to look to one of you people for inspiration some day when it’s 2am and I need to keep drawing. Stop worrying about all the other stuff—the pencils, the paper, the anatomy, all that shit. It will only get you so far. You’ve already got most of what you need. I hope this helps some people. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all the support over the years. You are all one of the greatest motivating forces in my life and my career. Sappy but true. Ok, let’s go draw some shit!!!“

Nepenthe (Anthony Ramos/Aspiring Actress!Reader)

Woah, I’m finally posting this! I’ve been working on this for weeks, but with everything that happened with my dad and a lot of other stuff that’s been going on, I never really had time to work on it. I’m really happy to post this, but it probably sucks, honestly.

I promised @lamsbur that I’d tag him in this… so here you go!

Warnings: Swearing, Starbucks, Anthony being awkward, and the reader being kind of a dick.

Words: 1400

Nepenthe (n.) something that makes one forget their sadness

“Okay, well, we’re all done. Thank you for coming in,” the woman behind the desk said, cutting your sentence that you had spent hours upon hours memorizing for the past few weeks. You had put your all into this audition, only to be cut off, and you weren’t sure when it would be any different. You inwardly sigh, but force a smile at the woman.

“Oh no, thank you for having me. Have a nice day,” you force out, trying to keep your eyes from reflecting how you were really feeling; like screaming about how much of your life you’d put into this damn thing to get thrown out of the room early by someone with eyeshadow that was too pigmented and a foundation three shades too light for her skin.
