Many fans, including myself, have pointed out that Sansa should have discussed this Umber/Karstark matter with Jon in private before this scene. But here’s a question: what detail in the scene makes us think she didn’t already?

Check out Jon’s reaction to Sansa speaking up in the Great Hall scene (above). Does he react like this is the first time he’s heard Sansa’s position on this? Or does he react like he knows what she’s launching into before she even says anything unsupportive?

Rewatching this scene, I found myself questioning my original assumption about the scene. After writing about it briefly in reply to winterfellchild’s fantastic Umber/Karstark meta, I got curious and took a closer look. In particular, I wondered what details of the scene I had missed originally, which contributed to changing my original assumption.

Below, I’ve broken down the scene line-by-line, matching each beat with the actor’s delivery and facial reactions (numbered with the corresponding screencap above bc tumblr is being stubborn and won’t let me insert them into a text post) to question the scene’s intentions and what they might suggest about the season ahead. Of course, standard disclaimers apply, this is just one interpretation and your mileage may vary.

You ever really think about how Amethyst knew nothing about herself prior to Rose dying? Because I do.

Amethyst has learned more since Rose died and Steven was born than she did in the thousands of years prior she’s been with them. More than that- she’s respected more now than she was before Rose died. They don’t carry her like a ragdoll or chuck sticks to make her leave them be. She’s not just Amethyst the troublemaker anymore. She’s Amethyst the Crystal Gem. 

It took them thousands of years to get to this point. Thousands.

But it’s always been that way for the newbie, hasn’t it? Steven is just as out of the loop. Steven has been ignored and refused information as a staple of his entire life. It’s a battle to get the simplest tidbit out of Pearl and Garnet, and they hold all the answers.

I repeat: Pearl and Garnet know everything (in a metaphorical sense). Steven and Amethyst know next to nothing.

It’s Amethyst who first gives Steven a glimpse into the reality of Gems. It’s Amethyst who shows Steven the Kindergarten, explains to him how Gems (or, at the very least, Quartzes) are made. Amethyst gives him the keys because she’s always been forced to hotwire the car, and she doesn’t want him to have to feel that rejection like she has.

Because, outside of this, what does she know about her own history? She doesn’t. She’s been denied access. 

Would knowing she was defective hurt? Of course it would. It hurts her now. But knowing isn’t a bad thing. It’s given her understanding. Amethyst finally understands why she’s felt off from Pearl and Garnet and Rose her whole life- it’s not all in her head, it’s also in her gemetics

So many bits and pieces of her life must make sense now. Why she couldn’t beat Pearl when Rose probably could. Why she’s flung more easily by corruptions and gets hurt and poofs more easily (not more often- that’s her recklessness)- her body isn’t quite normal. It doesn’t operate under normal Gem rules.

Would knowing more about Rose’s history hurt? Of course. But it’s also key to his character. Steven’s grown up idolizing Rose. Steven honestly thinks the Gems want him to be like Rose. And, one time, maybe he even wanted to be a little like Rose.

They didn’t have to tell him about Pink Diamond. They didn’t have to tell him she started a war. All they really needed to do was talk openly about her, about her flaws as a person, but, again, he’s been refused access. Pearl and Garnet don’t want Steven to know Rose the Gem, even now. Pearl and Garnet want Steven to know Rose the Idea. And, honestly, we’re past that point now. We can’t go back to that now. But they won’t go forward, either.

That’s one of the major differences between Steven and Amethyst- Amethyst has given up trying. Amethyst takes what she knows, the little bits and bobs, sticks them together with theory glue and hotwires the car. Steven has gotten the keys handed to him, once, and still has part of them now- he has Amethyst, who doesn’t lie about Gem things anymore, she just Doesn’t Know- and he doesn’t want to hotwire the car. He wants the full set of keys. 

More than that; he’s willing to fight for the full set of keys. 

He argues when Pearl and Garnet try to shut him out. He turns away from Garnet when she asks him to stay Just Because (he still would’ve gone if she had told him about BD, of course, but he doesn’t know that then). Amethyst?

Amethyst backs off and watches the drama. She doesn’t believe for a second that it’ll get him anywhere. She’s given up. In her mind, it’s only a matter of time before Steven does too.

  • it starts with angelica surrounded by people, seemingly satisfied and content, and ends with her all by herself on stage, privately devastated and unsatisfied
  • it’s framed like an essay. intro & thesis, three body paragraphs, conclusion and restatement of the thesis, showing her intelligence
  • while analyzing alexander, even in a lovestruck daze, angelica notes that he’s penniless. this comes up again in reason one, yet is once again dismissed. his financial state doesn’t matter—eliza does.
  • in the sia cover, the aforementioned singer sings both “and i knooow” and “helpless”, signifying that once angelica realizes eliza’s feelings, she is helpless to do anything but acknowledge them
  • helpless is repeated by eliza, three times, one for each reason.
  • angelica notes both alexander and eliza’s eyes, but never her own, symbolically linking them 
  • angelica also mentions “the first time i saw her face / then i turn and see my sister’s face” once again connecting the two people she loves more than anything
  • “intelligent eyes” she notices his mind first, a link to schuyler sisters, “i’m looking for a mind at work”
  • angelica says “mind” rather than heart during “i know my sister like i know my own mind”, showing that this is both a rational and emotional decision; she is using her head and her heart to manage this sacrifice
  • angelica only says “heart” once in the whole song, with ‘set my heart aflame’
  • in the first verse: “i remember that night/i remember those/i remember that dreamlike” angelica uses remember three times, and never forget for alexander, drawing attention to the line that “i have never been the same”—alexander is breaking the pattern of angelica’s world
  • the fire symbolism throughout the song, in comparison to helpless which uses “drowning”. angelica “match” wits, aflame, etc. there is also electricity (ben franklin with the key and the kite), another flame-filled metaphor. 
  • angelica also links alexander to icarus in BURN, in this case, angelica is icarus (clothed in orange), destined to fall, and alexander is the sun. eliza (clothed in blue) is the sea, this metaphor established by helpless and then by satisfied
  • angelica’s reiteration of the wedding toast is a reminder that this is all replaying with her mind; much like “i realize three fundamental truths at the exact same time”, this is all happening within a matter of seconds, showing how fast her brain truly works
  • “he’d be mine” / “that boy is mine”
  • angelica reflects on his eyes right before the reintroduced wedding toast, reiterating the feature she once again first noticed about him
  • satisfied is in many ways a revelation on a scene we thought we previously understood. this is another callback to schuyler sisters with angelica “you want a revolution? i want a revelation!” and the other wedding-goers go “union / to the revolution” what happens next? a revelation 
  • “i just might regret that night for the rest of my days / i’ll never forget the first time i saw your face” regret and forget are the first half of this rhyming scheme, connecting the two. if angelica could forget her feelings for hamilton, she would not have to regret this night.
  • “i’m sure you don’t know what you mean” “you’re like me: i’m never satisfied” / “nice going angelica, he was right: you will never be satisfied” angelica now painfully, acutely, understands what he was saying
  • at least my dear eliza’s his wife / at least i keep his eyes in my life—rhyming scheme, in addition to showing that, even when it comes to consoling herself about losing alexander, eliza still comes first
  • he will never be satisfied. i will never be satsified. is one of the only times in the song alexander and angelica are directly compared the same way that eliza & alexander are on numerous connections. a callback to “you’re like me: i’m never satisfied”

Taako calling everyone else dust… how badly did this entire experience of staying one step ahead of the apocalypse fuck him up? Taako’s not the kind of person who seems like he makes connections easily, but I don’t think he’s unfeeling - he cares about his sister, he seems like he cares about the other members of the IPRE too just by his tone and how receptive he is when they talk to him in this entire arc. Like when he was talking to Barry, and Barry asked if he could be frank - the tone he used to answer was the same as the tone he’s often used with his sister.

How much of who Taako is now is a result of not seeing other people as people anymore, because what’s the point? How often DID he care about people in those other planes, how many people did he have to lose before he stopped trying? Was there a noticeable change, or was there an assumption that he’d always felt that way because it used to be him and Lup, because of what happened in the world with the robots? Did he warm up to the people around him, only to grow cold again?

How yoi plays with sports story scheme

I was wondering recently why Yuri on Ice seemed to be so different and fresh to me and why so many people get so emotionally engaged with it. There is definitely a nice animation and great characters and representation and such a beautiful love story but I felt like there was something in the narration layer that I couldn’t name until I compared yoi storyline to the most common schemes.

When you look at most of the pop cultural stories, especially those where main plot focuses on sport, you’ll see that there is that one scheme they all follow - you have a hero who has talent but lacks something (like a good mentor or hard work or confidence), he finds a motivation to win (it may be anything from parent’s death to wish to impress a girl) and he finds a dedicated coach, he trains, he loses, he learns something about himself, he wins, he gets an award. This is the basic way of constructing such stories and it’s catchy because we all want to believe that we are able to fight our weaknesses and win by ourselves. You may modify this scheme to a large extent but the main core will always be a single hero who needs to grow in order to win and actually I think that this scheme is present in Yuri on Ice but in Yurio’s not Yuuri’s story. Yurio has talent, lacks hard work and needs to learn something about himself, his skate-off with Yuuri gives him a motivation to win, he trains hard, he loses, he grows, he wins. This doesn’t make his story or his character less interesting but I wanted to give you an example of what am I talking about so I could compare it to Yuuri’s story.

So now, where is Yuuri’s plot different you could say. Well, in a way you could find all those elements in Yuuri’s story too but his development is where it all turns to be innovative. You see in the basic scheme the hero needs to learn to win by himself while Yuuri has got to that point a long time ago. He had all of that: his motivation, his hard work, most of his abilities, his own strength before he met Victor. He was fighting by himself for five years before and even if his anxiety makes him look like a weak loser it is obvious he is already beyond that “learning about myself” phase. Even this confidence Victor helps him to find he already had just hidden. Yuuri knows his emotions and some of his strengths and most of the weak points himself and either he wins or loses those minor competitions it doesn’t change him too deeply. But what Victor gives him is the belief that he doesn’t have to fight by himself anymore. Not in a “you can learn from other people” or “teamwork is important” kind of way (’cause they are still used in most of the stories) but in acknowledging that you may become better if you let someone close to you (this lesson applies to Victor to btw but he is not the main hero so I’ll skip this part). 

I won’t say this reverses the scheme completely as this is still some kind of personal development that helps to win (though the fact that Yuuri does not finally win is interesting by itself) but it definitely changes the subtext of the whole story.  We like stories about heroes fighting by themselves because we often struggle with our problems alone and we need to believe me can do it. But Yuri on Ice gives us the idea that thought you are strong enough to fight maybe you don’t have to fight alone at all. I guess this is why it has such a great emotional impact because in a world that tells you all the time that it’s only for you to win the story of someone who still needed help even if he already was strong and beautiful is really hopeful, positive and in a way more realistic then the basic “hero can only win by himself” scheme. 

There is also the whole layer of how Victor doesn’t fit to the standard portrayal of a mentor figure but I think this is quite easy to spot and maybe let’s not make this longer than it has to be but the last quick reflection I had is that the most common way of portraying romantic relationships in the sports stories is either when the hero needs to sacrifice his relationship in order to focus (which is the trope I personally hate) or when he wins the attention of his love interest by winning the final competition (so the love is somehow a reward then). What is great in Yuuri and Victor’s relationship is how Yuuri doesn’t have to win to prove his worth to Victor. Almost from the beginning, Victor knows Yuuri’s flaws and he falls for him anyway. So Yuuri is not only given support that helps him to become better but also he doesn’t need to earn that support. Which I think again is quite moving because everyone dreams of this kind of relationship. We are all scared that we are not good enough to let someone help us in the first place and this is where yoi tells us it doesn’t have to be this way.

I’m sure there are much more tropes that are reversed in yoi and there is the whole narration layer that is also quite original but as storytelling is what I have the most experience with I decided to focus on this aspect only. And I may be wrong I just like to find and discuss narration schemes so please argue if you disagree but I love the fact that even when yoi takes those basic narration schemes it uses it to send a very positive message across and for me it could be a reason why there is such an enthusiastic fandom around it - because this anime exchanges the story of fighting alone for a story about growing in a relationship though it does not change a sports story for a cheaply romantic one.

On Greg's Age

After the Character Analysis post on Holly Blue, I just wanted to bring up something about age and SU characters.

From Adventures in Light Distortion:

Greg + 70 years = 110th birthday
Greg is 40 now
Steven is 14 years old
40-14= 26
Greg had Steven at 26

Given this information, the interactions between young Greg and Rose and also young Greg and baby Steven are clearer now.

It’s not to say that age is a determinant of maturity. But in most societies, certain ages are accompanied by life milestones. People are ushered into a new social environment at the dawn of certain years in their lives. We mark these years and generally we are able to pinpoint the kind of experiences someone has had by the time these years roll around.

Like how Greg was about done with college when he decided to drop out and be a rockstar.

Or how Rose may have been his very first serious relationship. And how he was Rose’s. 

And how Greg is still really young and is at the age most people are starting to reap the benefits of their work. Greg finally getting his royalty checks is doing just that.

But mostly how Greg gave up the years he was most hireable to raise Steven in a way that entered his son would always get to make his own choices in life, as he did.

Me regarding love in LWA

So.. anyone remember this? My very succinct review of Episode 10.

Because it is time to talk a bit about this character, Andrew Hanbridge. First things first:

I don’t dislike Andrew

I think he’s a decent character and have gotten better characterization after his first two appearances, but that he was implemented in a bad way and got put in a show where he wasn’t truly needed.

Because that is the thing, Andrew was introduced in the LWA series rather than in the OVAs.

A big appeal of Little Witch Academia’s OVAs for many people (myself included) was the fact that it had an all-girls cast. It is exceedingly rare for an anime to have an all-girls cast and to not be revolving around blatant ‘girly’ themes. Little Witch Academia is not inherently girly, it is just a bunch of teenage girls learning to become witches. By cutting away the boys, the series removed the need to include common teenage girl depiction tropes such as excessive focus on romance, boys, looks etc. Instead the series allows the different girls’ character traits and interests come to the fore.

However, with the introduction of Andrew in the series, Trigger regressed to rely on some of these clichés. In the first episode Andrew appears, all the students go gaga for this stoic, aloof guy solely because he is famous and rumoured to be handsome. So basically all the witch students of Luna Nova (except Lotte, Sucy and Diana) are shown to be gossipy, superficial teenage girls. This portrayal betrays the series earlier depiction of varied and multifaceted girl characters. If a pretty boy is around, then they get reduced to this one-dimensional clichéd stereotype. So the way Andrew was implemented into the series detracts from one of the strong points of the series.

What is Andrew’s role in the series? Reportedly, Trigger wanted him to be Akko’s connection to the ‘muggle’ world, so to speak. But personally, very seldom does he feel like he actually fulfils that purpose.

Instead, it feels like he mostly just behaves like a male ‘Diana’ and made to appear in scenarios where Diana couldn’t perform the same function. Both come from aristocratic families, both are well-spoken and rational-minded, both use careful rational rhetoric to solve problems and both of their character growths’ is because of them continually being amazed and inspired by Akko.

But why? Why would you keep around two characters that are so similar in personality and in character development (at least on paper)?

This is why Andrew being teased as a romantic interest to Akko feels like such a slap in the face to everyone who loved Akko and Diana’s chemistry already back in the OVAs. It makes it seem that Andrew wasn’t introduced despite Diana already existing, but because of it. Like Trigger wanted to cash in on Diana and Akko’s chemistry but turn it into something more ‘acceptable’ for the general audience.

But this is where Trigger confuses the hell out of me. If Andrew is the endgame romantic interest, why isn’t it more clearly established at this point? Why has there been so relatively little time for developing Akko and Andrew together then? Why did Trigger go full speed ahead to develope and show how much Akko and Diana deeply care for eachother rather than with Akko and Andrew instead? Why is there so much focus on and interaction between Akko and Diana in the openings, while Andrew is barely there and doesn’t appear together with Akko?

And to quote from this:

There is only one character holding hands with Akko in the OP. And that character isn’t Andrew.

Because there is one thing that makes me mad, and that is ‘Dianakko’ detractors that refuse to acknowledge Akko and Diana’s deeper connection.

Because the way Akko and Diana have grown so close, despite their differences and initial misunderstandings, shows that there is an unspoken deeper bond between them. Even when they looked down on eachother, they still both show admiration and care for eachother, with neither of them knowing why. There was something that slowly over time drew them closer.

So I must say, as a lesbian, the level of affection displayed by Diana and Akko is to me beyond than ‘just being friends’.

If anyone would carelessly throw themselves into danger to save me like Diana and Akko do for eachother;

if anyone would scream with a desperate worry for me like Diana and Akko do for eachother;

if anyone would keep looking at me with a look full of care and concern like how Akko and Diana look at eachother;

if anyone would tell me to keep trying and chase my dreams, while grabbing my hands and being moved to tears, like how Akko did to Diana;

if anyone would tell me “You continue to astonish me in unexpected ways” while them thinking about every time I’ve amazed and impressed them like Diana did to Akko;

if anyone invited me on a broom like this

or if anyone looked at me like this before replying to my invititation;

if anyone would do such things like these, I would consider them loving me.

However, some people will never accept two girl characters loving each other unless they are being intimately physically affectionate, like kissing eachother. Until they are, it can be handwaved away and be explained that they are just “Gal Pals”, “very good friends” and so on.

If we switched out Diana above for Andrew, so that Akko and Andrew had shared all those interactions, you would definitely see people claiming that they are in love based on those.

This is a double standard that is sadly very real in real life too. Girl-loving girls have to go great lengths for their love to be considered “real” in the eyes of some.

Something that made me feel like I had giant pit in my stomach around the time Episode 10 was released, was how some ‘Ankko’ posts included gifs like these:

What the actual fuck? These moments were somehow considered “sweet Ankko moments” by some fans. One shows Akko being hurt by Andrew, while the other show how Akko very uncomfortably gets forcibly pushed to the wall by a love-drugged Andrew.

Both of these moments made me feel highly uncomfortable and feel genuine distress for Akko in these situations when I watched them. Neither of these abusive moments should be considered sweet or romantic. It is not a good representation of ‘Ankko’ or even Andrew himself alone. And I feel I can’t take any criticism of Dianakko in any serious regard from anyone who did feel these moments were “romantic”.

For me, ‘Dianakko’ is not a case of fanservice, it is a matter of representation.

Either on purpose or by accident, Trigger has managed to write one of the most heartfelt and organic depictions in animation of two girls managing to put aside their vast differences and come to closely understand eachother through what at least I would describe as love. I don’t even ‘need’ A Big Damn Kiss or a dramatic declaration of love. I’d rather want an ending more like the ending of The Legend of Korra, with Akko and Diana leaving together on a broom, to work on a shared future and a shared dream, with room for them growing further closer together and figure out what it means for them. Depictions of girls deeply caring for each other and slowly falling in love are rare outside shows not specifically focusing on girls’ love, thus I feel Diana and Akko are important.

I hope that Trigger soon either finally cements a final pairing and gently lets one part down, or that there will be no confirmed endgame romance. Trigger’s vagueness is just tiring at this point.

So I’m sorry Trigger and Andrew, but I’ve actually had enough of this dude.

AND THEN THEY OVERPOWER THE LOST BOYS (APPARENTLY 3 VS 20 AND THE 3 WIN) AND THEY COME BACK TO STORYBROOKE IN LIKE TWO MINUTES. IT’S LITERALLY IN-AND-OUT.

SHE’S ALL WORRIED FOR KILLIAN’S WELLBEING AND GIVES BACK THE HOOK AND EVERYTHING AND I’M STILL REELING FROM HOW QUICKLY THAT HAPPENED LIKE IT FEELS LIKE A FUCKING DREAM I CAN’T

AND THEN HE APOLOGISES FOR EVERYTHING AND IS ALL “I SHOULD HAVE NEVER EVEN CONSIDERED RUNNING AWAY” THAT SPEECH OMG IT WAS WHAT I WANTED FOR AGES AND EMMA’S REACTION LIKE “IT’S FINE I FORGIVE YOU I DIDN’T REALLY GIVE YOU TIME TO TALK” AND I WAS LIKE YASS

AND THEN SHE’S LIKE WE GOTTA PATCH YOU UP AND HE’S LIKE “W8 I NEED TO TELL YOU SOMETHING” AND YOU SEE HER APPREHENSION LIKE “WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THIS GUY HE’S HURT AND HE’S PUTTING OFF GETTING BETTER KILLIAN R U OK”

I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW I NEEDED THIS EXACT SCENE UNTIL IT HAPPENED. AND I DIDN’T KNOW I NEEDED IT TO HAPPEN IN THIS WAY. THE ANGST IS OVER; THE TRUE LOVE IS BACK; AND CAPTAIN SWAN IS FUCKING ENGAGED WITH TRULY NO WALLS, NO SECRETS THIS TIME AND I CAN’T I’M GOING TO PASS OUT FROM THIS

Unpopular Hetalia Opinion: Violent RusAme

I know well RusAme is commonly known for Cold War, and often first things that come to mind when thinking about Cold War is hatred, sarcasm, and violence.

And that’s why it’s no wonder many RusAme canonverse fanfictions that’s based on history contains violence, ranging from verbal sarcasms to actual punching / shooting that’s very bloody and violent.

Seems reasonable. Cold War -> Hate and Rivalry ->  Violence. Easy to think.

But I just find it’s kind of exaggerating to “personify” Cold War as two men exchanging blows / bullets directly. Because direct combat between USA and USSR actually never officially happened. It’s more like lots of verbal threats and provoking other people to attack the other, but never directly make a move. Because making the first direct attack in the Cold War would make one of them (USA or USSR) as the “villain”.

And frankly speaking, USA and USSR were both superpower nations that were very cautious in their move, which explains why Cold War went on for decades without actually growed to the actual direct war between USA and USSR like Axis vs Allies in WW2.

True, there were few instances of indirect wars that made USA and USSR soldiers to oppose each other, but like I said before, it’s indirect as in they support opposing sides but not directly attack each other, like in Korean and Vietnam war. In other instances like Polar Bear Expedition, England tricked USA soldiers to make them end up facing Bolshevik’s soldiers which was not their original purpose being there, which made USA troops’ morale down and making it one of reasons that made the expedition failed. In short, yes they might be throwing few punches there but it’s all within indirect context like ‘you punched my friend so i’ll punch you’ or ‘sorry i was tricked by others to be here, i’m just defending myself here’ not just a mere shallow ‘you irritate me that’s why I punched you’.

So it just makes me think those over violent fighting portrayal between USA and USSR for Cold War in numerous hetalia fanworks are too exaggerating, since most of them were done in a mere shallow context of ‘you insulted me so i’ll punch you’. Lots of propaganda, threats, insults, yes. But actual direct punching / shooting until they’re badly bruised and bloody? I think that’s too unrealistic historically. Maybe a few punches here and there in the few indirect context I explained in previous paragraph but never directly.

Even in hetalia, Hima only draws Ivan and Alfred to be bickering and throwing insults / sarcasms at best, but never actually fighting by fists / guns.

They don’t even touch each other in those scenes. 

And before you drag these scenes to tell me I’m wrong that hima did portray them actually fighting:

I’m just gonna say, those are just AU and not the actual canonverse world, which doesn’t follow any historical facts at all.

Lastly, I understand that exaggeration sometimes is needed in writing fiction (even fiction that’s based on facts such as hetalia), to make the story spicier and more interesting. But still, it’s an exaggeration nonetheless and I just want that point to come across this part of fandom that loves portraying Cold War RusAme as an actual instinctive physical brawl fighting instead of intelligent calculating mind games like it actually was. 

How much alike Victor and Yuuri are (1/3)

So one thing I absolutely love is the fact that at the beginning of the anime it looks like Victor and Yuuri are complete opposites but then as the story goes and we learn more about them they turn out to have very similar ways of dealing with emotions and people. And I think this is one of the reasons why their relationship is so strong because they really are able to understand each other quite well.

Let me start with that “opposites attract” trope because I think that yoi creators play with that a lot at the beginning. It’s even in those obvious features like with the fact that Victor is taller and has light hair and blue eyes while Yuuri is smaller and dark-haired with brown eyes - it’s just so cliche? And there’s more of course, while Yuuri is shy Victor seems to be very open, Yuuri doesn’t believe in himself and Victor seems to be even over-confident, Yuuri gives up easily while Victor always pushed himself further, also Victor acts like he’d be very experienced with love while Yuuri never even thought about it and so on. Funny thing is that actually all of these things we think about both of them and especially about Victor turn out to be wrong at some point.

It’s so interesting to rewatch everything after ep 10 because it shows even more how unreliable Yuuri’s narration is. Yuuri learns very slowly that Victor is a human being too and I think that it’s not until ep 7 where he finally lets his idealised image of Victor go. But even then I think that most of the things we learn about Victor we know from the man himself in these rare moments of his narration and I love how much more Victor is willing to admit they’re alike. 

Like really willing to admit it. If he goes to Japan to find his inspiration it’s not because he lacks some technical or even presentation skills that Yuuri has. It’s because he sees in Yuuri someone who treats skating very similarly to Victor’s way, he sees that Yuuri puts his emotions into his routines and all his determination he puts in order to win and that’s something that Victor’s needs to get back as a skater. In other words, he sees in Yuuri his younger self, eager to win and challenge and brave enough to put all his soul into his performance. And that Victor knows from the very beginning (apart from the fact he probably thinks about them as soulmates since banquet).

And there’s another attitude they share as skaters – at some point, they both really gave up everything for skating. 

A lot of things, like including “life and love” maybe?

It not only gives us a hint of how much they’re both inexperienced with relationships and having fun they are also realising at the same moment that they are not satisfied with their lives and careers anymore. And this is so important because probably the most significant thing we learn about Victor in episode 10 is that he needed Yuuri as much or maybe even more than Yuuri needed him. The point is that they both lack exactly the same thing, they need their inspiration to skating back and they need someone to share their lives with and this is precisely what they find with each other.

So in firsts episodes, we are meant to think that Yuuri and Victor are very different but what we learn from Victor tells us a lot about how similar they are. And what they share as skaters is their determination to win and love for skating itself but also they way they sacrifice everything for skating to the point where it doesn’t make them happy anymore.

Another thing I’d like to discuss is how many traits they share and how similar are ways in which they express their love but I just feel this post is long enough and I’m very tired. Anyway, this for #victuuriweek and also for a wonderful @blue-phoenix-tears who suggested this topic long, long time ago.

hmm… It’s quite complicated to describe what kind of emotion I want to show in this piece, I was charmed by his dialog with Hisoka in ch 352, [This isn’t meant to be a taunt, but believe me when I say my victory is 100% certain. Even with that in mind, do you still wish to continue?] or in short, “dude, don’t fite, u’ll die.” “fite me.” “… m’kay..”
So it’s like a mix between hesitation and ‘as you wish, sir’. The first thing I had in mind is probably it’s his indirect way to express his gratitude to Hisoka (for helping him getting his Nen back) since the same attitude can be seen through his Troupe member several times, they’re not ashamed to show their gratitude to their enemies.

America+England Relationship Analysis

Time to get this post out before I die hyperventilating into my “Raven Reyes” paper bag because I honestly don’t know how to deal with her anymore, but here we go. You know that moment when Raven breaks down in front of her friends and how Bellamy then calmly speaks to her to build her up again?

I didn’t know how much I needed that type of scene until I saw it to be honest - I was fully unprepared let me tell yall lmao - but now that I’ve seen it and have witnessed in which context it unfolded itself it’s honestly become one of my favorite moments in the episode, because Raven gains back her strength through the presence of all her friends in that one minute of total weakness.

Like, the writers really do love to rough it up for our characters during very critical situations, but in this particular case it’s very touching because it’s seriously not a moment created for the kicks, but the kind of moment that wants to make room for “optimism” that brings this wild set of characters even closer.

And I love how we dial down through the stress there, especially when focusing on Raven, because her breaking point is the catalyst for the unity. I absolutely could go on and on about how significant that short conversation between Bellamy and Raven is for me alone, as he inspire her the same way he inspires Clarke or the others, but I am even more affected by the fact that Raven truly isn’t able to hide herself anymore, but, as I’ve said above, works herself out of her own insecurities with the help of her friends and gains back her strength.

I mean, just look at this moment when she gradually starts to snap while standing in the middle with everyone surrounding her, watching her: 

Or how she ends up so bound and buried deep inside her own fears that all she feels she can do is sit down and hate the situation she finds herself in:

It hurts and GOD I love it here, because Raven’s feelings carry the kind of realism that many can relate to, she hates failing and she hates not being able to pull things off so she puts distance between her and the issue by practically giving up. But the point of this scene as a whole is not that Raven isn’t smart enough - as she states - because she got rid of ALIE’s code in her brain. We are actually past that already. What this scene communicates on a fundamental level is that Raven comes to realize that she is not alone in this.

In fact, all of her friends are by her side:

The “We need you” line is so important for Raven (and me obviously), because it creates a very dramatic call-back to that one time when she wanted to leave camp in season one. You know that time when Finn - the boy she loved and pretty much considered her only family - couldn’t even see why she was doing certain things (like working on the bullets) and how useless she felt because of that reaction she got from him - essentially tried to shut herself completely off from everyone around her, because they, as she believed, didn’t *need* her. Bellamy though, our heart’s guy, is the one who reminds her that they do need her with intense honesty, twice - back in season one after her confrontation with Finn and now in 4x13 when she believes she is not enough.

Being faced with the full array of cards against you is one thing, Raven has been through that ever since she landed on the ground, especially thanks to Finn and how their relationship changed on earth, but actually coming to consciously develop a sense of “team culture” through emotional connection with her friends is something else for her since Raven used to have only one person to turn to and that person failed her back then. Bellamy does what Sinclair used to do. He doesn’t simply apply to Raven’s ego, instead the writer’s manage to open up a path to her heart through faith, love and understanding.

And that pushes her forward. That love she receives from Clarke, from Bellamy, hell even Murphy (4x09), that is the game changer for her in this moment. Raven loving herself and the things she’s capable of doing is otherworldly, but expanding that love and stretching it out over this little group of messy people - that’s what she really wants, not just for herself but for everyone in this lab:

So Raven goes for it. Through the presence of her friends she not only learns as much about having people to rely on and consider a family as she can, and resolves to continue operating in a way that not only shakes everyone free - which essentially creates this sense of teamwork because there is unwavering trust radiating from every important team player here and if ALIE, a computer, can do it, so can they - but it also makes her a leader in her own right.

She’s prepared to face these obstacles with them just in time, as she’s confronted with a more mature set of challenges with her friends - the emotional progression - and inspire everyone in the room to get back to work.

And it’s beautiful. In season one she came down for a single person, now in season four she goes up and back to space with and for all of her friends.

She’s more than just an awesome person. She’s a growing, dynamically self-improving one, someone who is able to establish these deep connections with all of these people, who can navigate and bring in optimism as well as pragmatism, who is still in the process of learning, and will only get better at doing what she does - not just by herself, but with her friends, her family.

so now that Iron Fist is out, I just realized how closely the Defenders shows’ release order parallels phase 1 of the MCU:

1. Iron Man/Daredevil S1
Features a hero in a bright red suit, received with enormous immediate success

2. The Incredible Hulk/Jessica Jones S1
Hero whose normal appearance really hides the power they possess. Just wants to be left alone tbh. No costume or armour, they’re just themselves.

3. Iron Man 2/Daredevil S2
Bright red suit hero man is back again, to less critical acclaim, but still pretty good.

4. Thor/Luke Cage S1
Hero whose normal appearance clearly shows the enormous physical power he possesses. Serious brother issues because of paternal favouritism.

5. Captain America/Iron Fist S1
Young guy from New York gets in a plane crash in the snow, presumed dead, returns many years later to everyone’s amazement. Training primarily focused on defeating ancient evil cult (since that’s technically what Hydra was originally, inhuman-wise, in the MCU).

6. Avengers/Defenders
Big song and dance number brings our unlikely team of misfits together in New York where they align under a group name that describes what they do for the innocent/general public.

This is definitely my favourite moment from episode 12 because both Victor and Yuuri are just so precious in this?

Look at this beautiful boy who declares he’ll win just so Victor could kiss his medal. He just wanted to retire but how could he when Victor says he failed as a coach? He’ll skate one more year and he’ll win this time ok.

But then as much as I love Victor’s ridiculous puppy eyes (same Victor, same) his answer is just so perfect because honestly, Victor’s main goal was to make Yuuri confident in his skills and to help him get the best score and the whole time after Yuuri beats his record he’s so proud and happy and Yuuri saying he wants to stay is everything he wanted to hear and yet he demands more. 

Victor, how long have you been thinking about competing with Yuuri while still coaching him? Because it looks like he already calculated all the risk and despite he doesn’t hesitate for a second? He’s so in love I can’t handle it and I also love how he puts Yuuri’s medal around his neck as if he was stating that it’s still valid but at the same time he says he wants Yuuri to win more times as he deserves.

Victor knows this is ridiculous, he was the only person ever to be able to do something like that and he was much younger when he started and he still totally looks like he thinks Yuuri could do this. Even when he does that super sweet thing with his face when he winks (I can’t find the gif but you know which one lol) it doesn’t look like his just teasing Yuuri he really is able to believe that at that moment even if he knows how it sounds. And then Yuuri doesn’t say it’s stupid or he could never do it, he says “okay”?!

He’s moved to tears because of how much Victor believes in him and how much Victor wants to do for him so they could stay together and so they could compete on the same ice because Yuuri always wanted that and promising Victor he’ll win for him is the least he can do in return?

Like this is the moment where most of their dreams come true and instead of just celebrating they sit there declaring absurd things to each other because they believe so much in the power of their love I’m so done with them, bye.

I think Jimin knew the pen belonged to Jungkook. But he still chose the essence sample next to yeah next to haha the cotton pad that Jungkook had chosen.

Also, 5 members already revealed their items, only Jin and Jimin’s items left, and of course Jimin didn’t choose his own item because BTS would kick his ass if he did so lol but Jungkook still ask him and acted like he really didn’t know the essence sample was jin’s haha

Hiii, dont you think that when Jimin, jungkook and Jin are together, Jimin tends to forget jk? And jk does the same? It sounds weird but i noticed that on the eat Jin of last year in the hotel room. Jikook didnt interect much, and i dont wanna be one those shippers that diminishes one member for shit like this but, i cant help but think that Jin gets in the way of them, and Jimin its reeally touchy with Jin. Jikook in general don’t interact in front of camera as much anymore. Their Vlives together are rare and they don’t even get to sit beside each other as often in fanmeets these days. There’s always someone accompanying them whenever they’re in a public place. It’s one of the things that makes us feel they’re real for reals. (It’s best that “if” Jikook is real, they keep it under wraps & let the world continue guessing. No matter how much we want them to go official, it’s no one’s decision to make but theirs.)

In my opinion, instead of getting in the way, Jin makes way for Jikook to happen in a soft, domestic (or sometimes teasing) way. It’s because of him that we got to witness a happy family dinner party live

In this Vlive last year, JK wasn’t even invited. He just barged into Jin & Jimin’s broadcast like it was his right (atta boy!). All through that episode, JK was teasing Jimin in every way possible without touching him and Jimin was trying his level best to remain calm (failing lots of time). It was Jin’s misfortune to have his Eat Jin broadcast turned into a lollipop-sucking-eyefucking porn video.

Jimin is touchy with every member. It’s his nature and nothing’s wrong with it. But his attraction and love for JK is on a gravity defying skyrocketing levels. 

Just because Jikook are close to each other, doesn’t mean they would keep staring at each other, holding onto each other, or remain glued to each other 24/7. Who does that? I don’t know one single person who pays attention to their significant others or close relations every single second of their life. In general, we have so many people we care about in different ways. Even if we go hangout with friends and our partners are also there, do we keep holding onto each other like the rest of the world doesn’t matter? If someone does that then it’s pretty rude and disrespectful. 

I’m grateful to Jin that he always invites Jikook to his broadcasts and we at least get to see the both of them onscreen together. Otherwise, we only have stealthy glances and those minor, hidden, subtle moments to count on. These three together make for a great company and it’s always a delight to watch them together.
