Whenever you talk about the Type Of Fan that hate on the prequels, I'm always amused and a little proud, and thankful: I wasn't quite one of those, since I wasn't as invested in Star Wars yet in general, but I did spend a long time thinking they were terrible. But oh my god has my opinion changed, and it makes fandom so much more fun. And honestly? A lot of it is thanks to you and other prequel fans, for making me see and appreciate so much that I didn't before. Because now I friggin' LOVE THEM.
anyway, the point of my last long-winded ask was mostly this: you and a few of your friends here pretty much single-handedly turned me from a prequel hater to someone that unapologetically loves them and will basically die on the “Hayden was brilliant as Anakin” hill. And that is why I always kind of smile when you mention That Type Of Fan. ;)
Wow, well, this is pretty much the best possible kind of message I can receive. Thank you so much for sending this to me!
Someone truly disliking the PT is their business (people do have different tastes! What a concept!) I’m not the kind of fan who’s going to show up at someone’s OT-Only Fan Party or whatever and pitch a fit about how wrong they are, because if it didn’t work for them, it didn’t. But I will admit it hurts my heart a little bit that there are people out there who’ve never even watched the PT because they “heard it was so bad” – or if they do, they go in with only its harshest critics’ voices already in their heads.
It’s one of the reasons I’ve tried – here and with what I do on Snark Wars – to provide an alternate point of view, and one that does not start every sentence with “Well aside from the fact that they were SO DEEPLY FLAWED, blahblahblah THIS ONE PART WAS OK I GUESS…” No: I just enjoyed these movies. I don’t need to provide an apology to strangers that’s 2 pages long “admitting” their faults in order to say that. It’s just Star Wars; it’s not real life. 😄
There are so many things I love about Lucas’ prequel trilogy that are in the actual films. But one thing that I find so interesting about them overall is that it really is like the biggest-budget Crazy Person Pet Project EVER. Lucas made the movies he wanted to make with his characters. They were weird, they were wild and fantastical, they were SO not what so many people expected, and he did it anyways. That’s pretty cool.
(Also the PT gave us Anakin and Obi-Wan and then Lucas had them look like that and like, honestly, what a visionary.) 😉
