this is good for a school book

My absolute favorite scene in Goblet of Fire is when the students sing the school song! It really brought the magic to the movie and I’m so pleased that we were able to witness it! And the fact that one of the bullies, Crabbe, was singing so proudly along made me think that wow—everyone there, good or bad, really does love Hogwarts! However, it only made me sad after, because I could never be a part of it in real life. While still amazing, I just wish they would’ve put that singing scene in the movie! It would’ve made it so much better.

YSBnow caught up with Kat, where she spilled more on her tips to getting fit and staying healthy all year long.

“I love working out,” she tells YSBnow. “It gives me time to think, listen to my favorite music, or read a good book, all while doing something healthy.”

The best part of working out? According to Kat, it’s the fact that there’s some type of exercise designed for anyone’s preferences, like yoga, dancing, gymnastics, soccer, you name it!

"There are so many different ways to exercise, something for everyone,” she explains.

More importantly, she wants YSBnow readers to know that no matter if you’re a fitness pro whose been working out for years OR an athlete who stays active through after-school sports OR a newbie just kickstarting your gym routine, it’s not about how you look on the outside: It’s all about being HEALTHY.

"Fitness is not about looking a certain way or changing your appearance, it’s about how you feel,” she tells YSBnow. “And creating positive energy from the inside out.”

Hi, friends! The school year starts in less than three weeks, and I’m trying to kick it off right with a new DonorsChoose project! If this project is funded, my kiddos will receive 30 mentor texts (those are high quality books that can be used to teach a ton of reading and writing skills, without boring text books). I know y’all all know how important a good book is :)

If you’re interested in helping out by making a (tax deductible) donation, message me and I will share the link!!

ETA: for those of you who don’t know, DonorsChoose is kind of like GoFundMe, only its tax deductible and specifically for public education. Every cent of what the money is going to is listed, including tax and labor! The donated materials belong to the school (and therefore the kids), not me. I teach at a Title I school, and more than 60% of our kids live below the poverty line. Kids in my class will be reading significantly below grade level. Please think about helping them out!

I'm completely enamored with the old school VHS vibe that the snippets have been using. And the 7 minute teaser is just absolutely brilliant. And the fact that Louis is off to another photoshoot today brings the possibility of a coffee table book that much closer. And Louis should just become the face of Stella because, honestly. I am so so pleased with how things have been going and cannot wait for tomorrow!!! The teasers are already stuck on repeat in my head.

So good! I just want to keep this excited, happy vibe going through the whole weekend!

I love the art style of your Valentina piece; you said you were "looking at a lot of 50s lifestyle art with graphic black". I love that art style too! Do you have some artist names I could look up? I never know who does all that gorgeous advert art other than Rockwell and Leyendecker--especially with that use of black, that's my favourite.

oh yeah, absolutely! Leyendecker and Rockwell are absolute masters, but there are a ton of illustrators to look at for later, more graphic mid-century work. A couple favourites of mine include Al Parker:

Jon Whitcomb:

Coby Whitmore:

Earl Oliver Hurst:

Pete Hawley:

…and not entirely of the same school, but Mead Scheaffer is killer at large swaths of black and value grouping throughout a composition:

…ditto that for Tom Lovell:

….and a million other artists that I’m sure I’m forgetting. But hopefully this is a good starting point! And here are some great compendium books to check out as well:

“My older brother was my hero growing up.  Everyone called him ‘Jise.’  He was this hip-hop dude.  People loved him, especially the girls.  Everyone knew when he walked into a room.  I was the opposite.  I blended into the crowd.  I was quiet.  I made straight A’s.  I liked comic books and action figures.  So I always looked up to him.  He was murdered one night in 1989.  Somebody shot him.  I was fifteen at the time, and I just kind of gave up.  I thought our family was curs…ed.  I always had this feeling that I was up next.  So it was like, ‘What’s the point of being good?’  I dropped out of school.  I started hanging out with the wrong crowd.  We started robbing people.  I never actually took anything myself.  I just tagged along for the adrenaline high.  Even at my lowest, part of me was always the same good kid.  I always held down a job.  I wrote poetry.  I kept dream journals.  Whenever we were getting into trouble, my friends would always tease me.  They’d say: ‘This isn’t you, man.  Why are you here?’  Hip-hop saved me.  It gave me a voice.  I started doing open mic nights.  I took all those dream journals and turned them into lyrics.  I joined a group called The Arsonists.  We toured all over Europe.  We pressed a lot of records.  Of course I always held down a second job.  My proudest moment was when they wrote about us in The Source.  My stage name was ‘Jise,’ in honor of my brother.  It was like I’d gotten us both there.”

Lives and Aesthetics of the Signs

Aries: Cannon ball diving into the pool, splashing everyone with water, and laughing. Yells obscenities at other drivers that piss them off. Always gets in trouble for being too loud in class. Will take any dare. Refuses to be told what to do and argues even when wrong. The life of the party.

Taurus: Sitting at the dinner table, eating, while reading a book on local edible plants. Goes for walks and puts random things he finds in his mouth. Will take any eating-related dare. Has tried just about every “strange” food known to man. Isn’t afraid of the “30-second” rule.

Gemini: Makes silly puns. Watches YouTube videos of baby animals and shows them to all of her friends. Full of questions. Constantly raises her hand in class, and can elaborate on a subject for an infinite amount of time. The one to start every conversation and the first to make friends in a new environment. Her laughter sounds like bubbles.

Cancer: Watches Disney movies way too much and probably cries during most of them. Shy. Avoids big responsibilities, often for fear of letting others down. Prefers to stay indoors and at home. Their “happy place” is inside, reading a good book, while wrapped in a cozy blanket on a rainy day. Very good at making up stories. Has vivid dreams and daydreams. Pretty good at baking.

Leo: Spends a lot of money on music festival tickets. Owns an entire shelf of different hair care products. Wears “loud” clothes and accessories to stand out. The friendliest jock you will ever meet. Great taste in the people they surround themselves with; they have no tolerance for bullies. Parties harder than anyone they know, and always posts photos of what they’re doing on social media. Probably invented beer pong.

Virgo: Owns several calendars. Maybe even a label maker. Has a blog about “Planners”. Finds pleasure in ritualistic cleaning and organizing. Great at planning events. Always prepared. Carries everything they think they might need in the purse they take with them everywhere (“Mary Poppins Bag”). Loves to write, and keeps around a dozen half-filled notebooks in her room. Very good at problem solving. Prefers to work alone.

Libra: Messy. Owns at least one exploding bin of art supplies. Creates everything that decorates her room. Verbally comments to appreciate the beauty surrounding her as she sees it. Stares into your eyes when listening to you. Can make up a conversation about anything. Talks constantly until she forgets that she’s still speaking and trails off. Reads people like books, and uses humor to explore boundaries and learn about others. Avoids confrontation. Good at lying. Can’t own a white shirt because she spills everything on it (food, paint).

Scorpio: Perpetual “emo phase”, internally or externally. Rarely talks about themselves. Can walk into a room and immediately understand the intentions and personality of each person in it, just by looking. Hard shell, soft insides. Their eyes are the only ones that light up and shine in gloomy weather. They can stare into your soul. Only sees things in black or white. Usually has great taste in music. Deeply loyal friends and partners to those they trust. Keeps a lot of secrets, both their own and of those they love.

Sagittarius: Fascinated by other cultures. Has or wants to travel to many different countries. Speaks at least three languages. Either deeply spiritual or religious. Ritualistic. Isn’t afraid to try new things. Loves mystery and adventure books. Very independent, and doesnt like feeling trapped. Has some sort of self-expressive medium that allows them to free their wings (art, music, dance, writing). Self-sufficient.

Capricorn: “Work hard, play hard” mentality. Typically very serious in nature. Always seems much more wise and mature than his peers. Has probably tried hard drugs at one point in his life. Firm in practices and beliefs. Good at keeping their word. Has one big obsession/hobby, like playing a certain game, collecting something, or working on something.

Aquarius: Has a very unique sense of humor that others don’t usually understand. Conspiracy theorist. Loves all helpless creatures and wants to protect them from the world. Activist and rebellious humanitarian. Insanely intelligent, but refuses to apply themselves to the school system. Learns very quickly. Good at public speaking. Probably the “class clown”.

Pisces: Stays home on weekends to sleep in. Has a dream diary. Typically pretty creative and may enjoy abstract painting. Musically gifted. Has been told that they “live in another world”. Slips easily into daydreams, and enjoys indulging in the fantasy worlds of books and stories that they read.

I recently read Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat and I fell in love with watching Damen and Laurent fall in love… ;o;

BNHA Headcanons

Just some head canons I have

Midoriya

- Don’t challenge him to any video game. He will. Destroy. You. Does not matter if you’re his best friend. You’re going down, and he’ll smile the entire time.

- Animals?? Love him?? Koda low-key gets excited.

- Pretty good artist. He doesn’t do it a lot, but it’s one thing him and Bakouga have in common. Not that either know. (Thats a lie. Katsuki has seen him draw, but doesn’t comment. He’s a little impressed tbh.)

- As they get older, and he gets more stable with his quirk he just. Picks people up. Randomly. Todoroki in his way? Dat boi in the air and set down before he can blink. Iida ranting too early in the morning? Tossed over the shoulder and thrown on the couch with a very drawn out “shhhhhh”. Shoji cries the first time Izuku does it to him cuz he thought nobody could pick him up anymore. Piggy back rides are a regular thing by third year. Even Momo gets in on it. (They’re all low-key attracted by it, but no one saying shit.)

Bakugou

- Good artist. doodles mostly and doesn’t talk about it.

- very big dog person. Cats are okay- he’d own one, yeah, but dogs are where its at. When he gets one later in life, people are shook by how well trained and affectionate the pupper is.

- Tone deaf. No one takes him to karaoke after the incident.

- He likes?? Kids?? No one was expecting this when they went on a field trip to the elementary school. Kirishima kinda thinks its cuz he regrets what he did to Izuku, and is sorta trying to make up for it.

- When no one is around, he listens to really soft music.

Todoroki

- By third year he is known as The Prankster. He’s gotten too comfortable. Everyone fears the 1st of April. Even Bakouga locks himself in his dorm. (The only ones safe are Izuku and Momo- but they help him in secret.)

- The sass master by second year. “Did you run all the way here?” “No, just briskly walking throws me into cardiac arrest.”

- Really likes small animals. Hamsters? Heck ye. Chinchilla? STOP HIS HEART WILL BURST. (But hes also scared he’ll accidentally hurt them. Sweet boi.)

- Ride or die friend. Will drive at two in the morning to wherever they hell u managed to land yourself at. Probably would help you hide a body too.

- This boy can’t figure out video games to save his life. Prefers chess and crosswords. (But will try to play for Izuku.)

- Surprisingly, he’s that one person always taking pictures. His phone is loaded with selfies of him and and his friends. The only physical evidence that he smiles. He carries a selfie stick around and no one lets him forget it (but he doesn’t understand why its so funny?? he likes taking selfies with his friends. :( )

Kirishima

- Unhealthy obsession with flower crowns. He has like 10 at his dorm that he wears around when they aren’t training. (He made them himself.)

- Rly good at comforting. best hugs. Well, after Shoji. Good listener. 11/10 would have as best friend.

- Really likes fictional books. Especially action filled ones. Bakugou was v surprised when he was laying on his friend’s floor and looked under the bed to find. like. fifty books. They all have rlly colorful covers and outrageous plots, but Kiri will defend them to the ends of the earth.

- fav pass time is to just.. walk. Where is he? probs just walking around the school grounds. Has accidentally stayed out after curfew. Got an earful from Aizawa.

Aizawa

- Makes some bomb ass tea. However, he prefers coffee or cocoa. Midnight regularly makes him brew the staff tea tho.

- Regularly daydreams about being a cat

- His apartment has one (1) picture hanging on the wall. Its of his cat. Mic gave it to him one year as a joke. The blond still cries a little whenever he sees it.

- he writes down and saves weird things his students say. He has enough material to make roughly 3 books filled with quotes. He’s planning to publish them when he retires.

Tokoyami

- Regularly gets attacked by birds. No. Really. It’s an actual problem. Birds are assholes.

- Both of his parents have regular human heads. His birth was very odd. And his dad couldn’t exactly accuse his mom of cheating, ya know? That would just raise so many strange questions.

- He’s not much of an animal person. The irony is not lost to him.

- Prefers hand-held games. He also joins Todo for chess usually. They are pretty evenly matched.

Because we’re more than sisters. We chose each other. We’re best friends.
—  Agatha, The School for Good and Evil #3: The Last Ever After by Soman Chainani

i’m on summer break right now.

relaxing

▸ cleaning out last year’s papers. separate everything into things you may need next year (important papers, prerequisite course papers, etc.) and things to throw out. it feels so so refreshing to get old papers out of the way

▸ going outside. schoolwork sometimes makes it difficult to get outside during the school year so I take advantage of the summer break to get some fresh air and unwind. I like to garden and go for runs / walks. nature makes me very happy.

▸ eating good food. it’s so so great to be able to take the time and enjoy what I eat and try seasonal foods and new things. also: fruit always tastes so much sweeter during the summer + there’s a lot of fruit picking going on so I usually go with friends and family to pick and eat together. and there are usually more vendors that come to farmers markets during the summer so check those out!

▸ catching up on books. during the school year I don’t get time to read a lot so every summer I look forward to going to the library and getting books to read.

▸ visit new places you’ve always wanted to go to. I’m planning on going to a couple cool places downtown with friends + family and there’s a botanical garden in my area that holds fun summer events. you can have fun without it costing you much at all!

learning

▸ skills. try something new, start a new project! I’m going to try and learn something new on the piano and work on a scarf for the winter time.

▸ preview for the upcoming school year. don’t stress about it. go at a relaxed pace and skim through the material a bit. you’ll get a better understanding of the topics and it will be easier to grasp concepts during the school year. Here’s a post I’ve made on summer studies.

▸ learn something you’re interested in. if there is a topic you’re really passionate about or something you really like, learn more about it. I’ve always wanted to know more about the evolution of language so I’ll be reading about that during the summer time.

▸ visit museums. they often have cool and interesting exhibits. if you hear about one you think you would like, go for it!!

▸ writing. if you like that sort of thing. I like writing poems and I’m also working on a story. I feel like my brain is more open during summer break and just works better in general.

reminders

▸ hydration hydration. drink lots of water and try different lemonades and teas.

▸ skin care. sunblock is necessary for healthy skin and you need to put some on so that you don’t get a painful sunburn. also be sure to moisturize your skin during the summer so that it doesn’t dry out. I like to use a ginger cream because it smells wonderful and it’s very light (I don’t like sticky and thick moisturizers).

▸ don’t stress. just relax and go about your day, don’t make a confining schedule because it’s often stressful when you aren’t able to do things exactly at that time and suddenly summer doesn’t feel so relaxing or free anymore. you need to find the balance between being productive and having a day that flows smoothly.

have a lovely summer! -hana from kiyoko-studies
