One small step -- My 10-year journey from a wheelchair to walking
In May, espnW's weekly essay series will focus on new beginnings and changes. This week, Victoria Arlen writes about learning to walk after spending 10 years paralyzed in a wheelchair.

In May, espnW’s weekly essay series will focus on new beginnings and changes.

I was told it couldn’t be done. My dream was impossible. But on March 3, 2016, after spending 10 years in a wheelchair paralyzed from the waist down, I took my first steps without assistance. That was no easy task.

But first, let me take a step back.

When I was 11, I got sick. My back and side ached, so doctors took out my appendix. Then my legs began giving out. My foot dragged. Within two weeks, I lost all feeling and function in my legs. Next, my hands stopped working. I couldn’t control my arms, couldn’t swallow properly or find the right words when I wanted to speak. It was as if someone was slowly shutting down the switches on the circuit board that controlled my body and brain. I was slowly slipping away from my family.

Then everything went dark.

Two years later, I woke up inside a body that could not move. I was locked in. I could hear the conversations going on around me, but I had no way of alerting anyone that I was aware they were there.

It took three years for doctors to diagnose me with two equally rare conditions: Transverse Myelitis and Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis, autoimmune disorders that caused swelling in my brain and spinal cord. I’ve since learned that, had my doctors diagnosed me correctly in 2006, a steroid injection could have prevented all of this. But at the time of my diagnosis, they offered my family little hope. They told them I would be a vegetable for the rest of my life. I heard those conversations.

But my parents believed in me. They set up a hospital room in our house in New Hampshire, and took care of me. My three brothers – I’m a triplet and we have an older brother – talked to me and kept me in the know about what was going on outside of my room. They empowered me to fight and get stronger. They didn’t know I could hear them, but I could.

One month after taking my first steps, I posed for a new ESPN portrait without my wheelchair.

Then, in December 2009, I made eye contact with my mom. Slowly over the next year, I began coming back to life. Raw sounds became words, became sentences. A twitch of my index finger became the wave of my hand. The ability to swallow pudding eventually led to me mowing on a steak. I learned the name Justin Bieber, held my first cell phone and learned what it meant to “poke” someone on Facebook. But despite daily progress, one thing never returned: my legs. I was told the swelling had caused permanent damage to my spinal cord and I would be paralyzed from my belly button down for the rest of my life. Every specialist told me the same thing: “You need to get used to being in a wheelchair.”

I’d already overcome the impossible. I’d woken up and re-learned to live. My idea of what is possible had changed. When my doctors said I would never walk, I didn’t believe them. I knew I wasn’t meant to spend my life in a chair.

Although I believed I would walk again, I knew it would be a long, difficult road littered with challenges I couldn’t foresee. I remember coming home from high school one day crushed because kids were bullying me because of my chair. I had been so happy to return to school and after that day, I didn’t want to go back. As my crying subsided, my parents promised they would do whatever it took to help me to walk again. They kept that promise. They never lost hope.

At some points, hope was the only thing I had. When I began my journey toward walking again, I clung to hope like a life raft. There is a Helen Keller quote that I saved in a journal I’ve kept along this journey. “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” I had hope; I was still working on confidence.

Growing up, I was a water baby. We lived near a lake, had a pool in our backyard and as soon as I was old enough, I joined a swim team. By 10, I was winning local events. As I began to heal from my illness, I came to the sad realization that I would never swim again. I didn’t think I could swim without my legs. But my brothers disagreed, so in 2010 they threw me into our pool. I was terrified. But it was a turning point in my life. It was the “jump” I needed to get back to my life. When I was swimming, I was free from the chair. And to my surprise, I was still good. In the water, I found freedom – and my confidence.

In 2012, at 17, I made the USA Paralympic swim team and competed at the London Games. I brought home three silver medals and a gold in the 100-meter freestyle. I set a world record in the 100-meter free. When I returned home, I was met with quite a bit of fanfare. All of a sudden, my chair and I were thrust into the spotlight. I was invited to speaking engagements and appearances. People recognized me at the grocery store. I began telling my story to television reporters and newspaper writers, becoming a beacon of hope to so many around the world. But I never lost my hope and vision for getting out of that chair.

As I pushed toward my goal of walking, I found the hope I needed at Project Walk, a paralysis recovery center based in San Diego. Through the Dardzinski Method, an activity-based therapy, Project Walk has helped many people dealing with paralysis to regain function and even walk. My mother and I temporarily relocated to San Diego and lived with family so I could train every day. We realized this was the place that could help me, but we didn’t want to live hundreds of miles away from my brothers and dad. So, keeping their promise, my family decided to open the first Project Walk franchise on the East Coast. This way, I could train every day and achieve my goal, while others in my hometown could regain the hope they needed, as well. In 2013, my mother had asked one of my specialists what the possibility was of me ever walking again. He told her, “I wouldn’t mortgage the house.” Well, my parents mortgaged our house and in 2015, they opened Project Walk Boston.

It became my refuge. Despite agonizing frustration, I put in everything I had every day, spending thousands of hours working and fighting for one flicker of a sign that my legs were still alive. For the longest time, I didn’t see even a twitch of movement below my level of injury.

Then, on Nov. 11, 2015, I took a small step. I was strapped into a harness above a treadmill and two trainers worked to move my legs. It had been six years since I “woke up” and my legs had shown no life. Most doctors say if there is no improvement after two years, there will be no improvement. Still, I showed up every day, for up to six hours a day, and worked. That day, one of my trainers noticed a flicker, a small movement from within my right leg. It wasn’t much, but it was all the hope I needed. I harnessed that flicker and fanned the flame. Slowly, I began regaining movement in my legs. As they became stronger, I began sitting less and walking with the aid of forearm crutches and leg braces more frequently.

Five months later, on March 3, 2016, I let go of the crutches and put one foot in front of the other. I haven’t stopped since. I sometimes feel like the Will Ferrell character Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights. Without my chair, “I don’t know what to do with my hands.”

That’s not to say every day is perfect. Walking is still challenging and I still have significant impairment. I wear leg braces, follow a training program for two-to-three hours per day and on the days when my legs feel more paralyzed, I have my chair or crutches on standby. But my struggle is now less visible. Only my trainers, those closest to me and I know the extent of the damage and the effort it takes for me to continue to progress each day. Only they see the thousands of hours of training, 15 different pairs of leg braces, three wheelchairs and all the blood, sweat and tears. Sometimes my recovery and the regimen I have to keep feels like a second job. But it’s all worth it. It’s been 10 years since I was able to look someone in the eye instead of staring at everyone’s butts all day.

Without the chair, there is no obvious evidence of my journey, no wheelchair or pink crutches to explain the past 10 years. They were such a reminder of what had happened to me that with them; I never felt I could truly move on or be free. But standing was scary, too. I was incredibly nervous about announcing this news. I was unsure how people would react to me. But then I realized this is my journey and nobody else’s and maybe it can give hope to people who need it most.

For the past two months, I’ve been finding my new identity and reflecting on a turbulent 10-year journey. I’m 21. I’m in the public eye. My identity to many is that of a girl in a wheelchair, a Paralympic gold medalist, a television personality for ESPN and a survivor. Standing upright felt like drastically changing my hair and then worrying what everyone else would think. I wondered if I would be accepted without my chair. But I needed to be comfortable and at peace with my new identity before I could ask the same from others.

So far, the reaction has been incredible, so many tears and hugs and so much support. It’s been fun surprising my family and friends and giving them a proper hug. I didn’t do this on my own, and I am grateful for everyone who has helped me to this point. Each day, I become more comfortable with my new reality. I thought taking those steps on March 3 would be my finish line. But really, they were only the beginning.

Here’s Why You Need To Feel Bad For Kylie Jenner:

2007>Kylie Jenner (then 9 years old) began appearing in reality TV series Keeping Up With The Kardashians after the rise of older sister Kim’s sex tape.

+In the early seasons, Kylie & sister Kendall appeared briefly, often having short segments on what the two were up to

+Since KUWTK is filmed under multiple camera set ups in the home Kylie was exposed to cameras, fame, and the public very young. In the early seasons of KUWTK, Kylie is often shown trailing behind her older sisters.

Season 1 Episode 1> Kylie is seen dancing on a stripper pole that  Kim bought as gift for someone else.

+You can tell by Kylie’s body language she wants to impress Kim (who is watching and laughing) it seems childlike and innocent.

+Because Kim’s sex tape had surfaced, the family always had a light hearted way of discussing sex - dialogue between them was always open minded.

Season 1 KUWTK (2007)>Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe do a Girls Gone Wild shoot, Kim gets cover of Playboy, Khloe gets DUI, and nude photos of Kourtney leak.

+Kylie was exposed to these things. I doubt she knew the consequences because for the family, money and fame always fixed it, it seemed ok.

+KUWTK always portrayed the family to be very close. Kylie admired her sisters and wanted to emulate them. Kim was seen as a sex symbol.

2007-08>Kylie appears at age appropriate events (MTV, charity campaigns, kids choice awards)

Season 3 KUWTK(2009)>Kris & Bruce’s marriage start showing signs of stress. Bruce gets plastic surgery. Kylie starts experimenting with makeup.

(Above is a picture of Kylie posing from an old Myspace profile)

Season 4, Episode 8: KUWTK (2010)>Kylie starts showing signs of jealousy over Kendall.

+In this episode, then Bruce Jenner says to Kylie “your time will come.” In a very dismissive way. I imagine she felt very inadequate.

Season 5 KUWTK(2010)>Kim receives Botox & openly discusses it with her family. Furthering showing then 13 year old Kylie that procedure is an option.

2011>Tyga performs at Kendall’s birthday bash, probably when he first met Kylie (who was on stage)

+The body language in the video shows Kylie appearing almost star struck over Tyga while sister Kendall just enjoys the moment.

Season 6 KUWTK (2011)>Kylie, then 14, takes shift from “tween” to teen. Scott trying to become her manager.

2011-14>As Kylie gets older the focus becomes more on her personal brand, and is pictured alone more than ever.

In 2013> She was caught stealing Kim’s clothes

2013>Kylie’s clothing line with sister Kendall launches in Pacsun stores worldwide

She and Kendall launch shoe & handbag line for Steve Madden

Sep-Oct 2014>The more people talk about Kylie’s lips the bigger they get

+The bigger her lips get the more the public bash her. Making memes to further bash her changing appearance.

April 13 2015>Kylie tells Grazia magazine that she denies plastic surgery rumors, despite obvious increase.

April 2015>Caitlyn (once Bruce) Jenner comes out as transgender. Kylie and Caitlyn receive praise…but scrutiny too.

>At this point Kylie is undergoing a lot of emotional trauma. Public relationship with older boyfriend, parents split, dad comes out as transgender. As a means to tuck away all of her distress, Kylie probably started focusing solely on her personal appearance. It is easy to get lost in yourself and become obsessed with your appearance, but this often times means someone is hiding emotional suffering.

>The more Kylie’s personal life became unraveled, the more her face changed.

May 2015>Clips for an upcoming KUWTK are released. Kylie admits to having lip fillers.

>Following the release of the clips, plastic surgeons from all over weigh in on what other work Kylie may have received:

August 2015(now)>Kylie will be turning 18 on August 10th, (2 days away from this original blog post date) Whose to say where her transformation will go.

After reading this thread I hope I portrayed Kylie’s life in a relatable way. She is still so very young. I hope to change the narrative.

Marco Antonio Muñiz (born September 16, 1968), better known by his stage name as Marc Anthony, is an American record producer, singer-songwriter, fashion designer, actor and television producer. Anthony is also the top selling tropical salsa artist of all time. The two-time Grammyand four-time Latin Grammy winner has sold more than 12 million albums worldwide. He is best known for his Latin salsa numbers and ballads. Anthony has won numerous awards, and his achievements have been honored through various recognitions. He was the recipient of the 2009 Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Chair’s Award. He also received the “2009 CHCI Chair’s Lifetime Achievement Award” on September 16, 2009.

Marco Antonio Muñiz, known professionally by his stage name Marc Anthony, was born in New York City, to Puerto Rican parents Guillermina, a housewife, and Felipe Muñiz, a musician and hospital lunchroom worker from Guayama, Puerto Rico. Anthony’s parents named him after Mexican singer Marco Antonio Muñiz. Anthony grew up in East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem and El Barrio, and is the youngest of eight surviving children. He was raised Roman Catholic.

Muñiz began his career as a session vocalist for freestyle and Underground New York house music acts. After changing his name to avoid confusion with his namesake, Anthony worked as a songwriter and backing vocalist for pop acts including Menudo and the Latin Rascals. His first album was a freestyle music record, “Rebel”, in 1988 on Bluedog Records. That same year he wrote and produced “Boy I’ve Been Told” for fellow freestyle artist Sa-Fire. Then in 1989, he sang backup vocals for Ann-Marie on the freestyle club hit, “With or Without You” produced by Little Louie Vega and Todd Terry. A year later, 1990, with Little Louie Vega and Todd Terry, Marc wrote and whispered a duet with Chrissy I-eece, called “You Should Know By Now”. In 1992, still working with Todd Terry, he provided vocals for “Love Change” which is on the flip-side of a 12" vinyl released by Elan and The Powermachine titled “Here’s Your Hat”, production of Todd Terry. At the same time, he collaborated with music producer Little Louie Vega, who featured the singer on many another freestyle-flavored club hits “Ride On The Rhythm” and the “When The Night Is Over” album, which featured the Freestyle classic “Time”. In 1992, Vega and Anthony opened for Latin bandleader Tito Puente at New York's Madison Square Garden. After 1992, he changed his style from freestyle to salsa and other Latin styles.

Otra Nota (1993) Anthony was initially reluctant to become a salsa musician and declined an offer to make a salsa album when Ralph Mercado, president of RMM Records, asked him. Anthony was in a taxi when he heard Juan Gabriel’s hit song, “Hasta Que Te Conocí” which influenced him to change his mind and ask Mercado if he could record it as a salsa tune. Inspired by the music of Tito Puente, Hector Lavoe, Rubén Blades and Juan Gabriel, Anthony released his Spanish-language debut, Otra nota, in 1993. Anthony performed at the Radio y Musica Convention hosted by Alfredo Alonso. "Si Tu No Te Fueras", “El Ultimo Beso”, “Palabras Del Alma”, The album also included a cover of Bread’s song, “Make It with You”. Subsequent tours throughout the Americas, including an opening slot for Blades, established Anthony as one of the new stars in salsa. In 1994, he was featured in La India’s album Dicen Que Soy, on the song “Vivir Lo Nuestro”.

His 1995 follow-up, Todo a su tiempo, won Anthony a Billboard award for Hot Tropical Artist of the Year. The album was also nominated for a Grammy with songs like “Te Conozco Bien”, “Hasta Ayer”, “Nadie Como Ella”, “Se Me Sigue Olvidando”, “Te Amare”, and “Llegaste A Mi”. The album has sold more than 800,000 copies and has become established gold in the US and in Puerto Rico.

Anthony’s next Spanish language album, Contra La Coriente, was followed by the television special Marc Anthony: The Concert from Madison Square Garden, broadcast on HBO onValentine’s Day 2000. The special was nominated for Music Special of the Year from TV Guide. The album’s song “Y Hubo Alguien” became his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks Chart and the first by a salsa musician. The album became the first salsa album to enter the English language Billboard 200 chart. After an ongoing battle with RMM, he severed ties with Ralph Mercado and left the label in 1999.

Anthony subsequently recorded the duet “No Me Ames” with Jennifer Lopez on her album On the 6, giving her an assist in her Spanish language crossover attempt.

In 1999, riding the crossover wave of Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin in the Anglophone market, Anthony, working with producers Walter AfanasieffCory RooneyDan Shea, and Rodney Jerkins, released an English-language, self-titled album with the US Top 5 single “I Need to Know”, and the Spanish version, “Dímelo”. His song “You Sang To Me” was featured in Runaway Bride. A dance version was remixed by Dutch producer Rene Van Verseveld. The album debuted at number eight on the Billboard album chart, and six weeks later went platinum; it eventually was certified triple platinum. The song “I Need To Know” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

In June 2004, Anthony released a Latin pop album, Amar Sin Mentiras. The following month, he reintroduced its songs with a danceable salsa rhythm in another album, Valio La Pena. The song “Escapémonos” was a duet with Jennifer Lopez. In the 2005 Latin Grammy Awards, his Amar Sin Mentiras won best Latin Pop Album of The Year, and his Valió La Pena won Best Tropical Album of the Year. Lopez and Anthony performed “Escapémonos” at the 2005 Grammy Awards. In 2001, he debuted another salsa album, Libre, which was certified gold with songs like “Celos”, “Este Loco Que Te Mira”, and “Viviendo”. The album spent 14 weeks at the number-one spot on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. The year after that, he made another English-language album, Mended.

On December 2012, it was announced that Anthony was recording a salsa album alongside with longtime producer Sergio GeorgeVivir Mi Vida, a Spanish adaptation of Khaled’s song “C'est la vie”, was released as the lead single on April 25, 2013. In July 2013, Anthony released 3.0, a salsa album including his song “Vivir Mi Vida”. Since the release, the album has been certified Platinum. In addition to the new album, Anthony announced his Vivir Mi Vida World Tour, and plans to travel across 15 countries on 3 continents. On July 11, 2006, Anthony released Sigo Siendo Yo, a Spanish greatest-hits album. On May 2010 he released Iconos, a tribute to old Latin songs by artists such as José Luis PeralesJuan Gabriel and José José. In 2012, he released a new song called “Cautivo De Este Amor.” In the same year, Anthony was inducted into the Billboard Latin Music Hall of Fame.

Anthony played supporting roles in projects including 1995's Hackers, and 1996's Big Night and The Substitute. He appeared with Rubén Bladesand Puerto Rican pop singer Ednita Nazario in Paul Simon’s 1998 stage musical, The Capeman, which ran for 68 performances. He had a role inMartin Scorsese’s 1999 drama Bringing Out the Dead, and in 2001, opposite Salma Hayek, was in the film In the Time of the Butterflies. In Man On Fire (2004), Anthony, opposite Denzel Washington, played a wealthy businessman who hires a former U.S. Marine to protect his daughter from kidnappers in Mexico City. In 2007, Anthony starred in El Cantante, a biographical drama about the life of salsa music legend Héctor Lavoe, who died in 1993 from AIDS complications. Anthony’s then-wife, Jennifer Lopez, narrated the story and portrayed Lavoe’s wife. The film, released in August 2007, received strong reviews. In 2010, Anthony guest-starred in two episodes of the TNT medical drama “HawthoRNe” as a detective and the title character’s (Jada Pinkett Smith) love interest. He was later named the executive music producer of the show. Anthony worked with ex-wife Lopez and director-choeographer Jamie King in late 2011 on a Latin talent series created by Simon Fuller, called Q'Viva! The Chosen. It follows Lopez and Anthony as they travel across 21 countries to find new talent. In 2012, Anthony guest mentored on Season 2 of The X Factor (U.S. TV series).

Anthony is a Democrat and performed the National Anthem at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Anthony also sang “God Bless America” at Major League Baseball’s All-Star game in New York on July 16, 2013. While Anthony is an American citizen, born and raised in New York of Puerto Rican descent, numerous offensive tweets made the rounds, saying “shouldn’t an American be singing God Bless America?” under the mistaken belief that Anthony is actually from Mexico or Cuba. The Anti-Defamation League spoke out against the offensive tweets.

In 1994, Anthony’s ex-girlfriend Debbie Rosado, a NYC police officer, gave birth to their daughter Ariana.

Marc married former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres on May 9, 2000 in Las Vegas. They have two sons, Cristian Anthony Muñiz (February 5, 2001) who Anthony named after the Mexican singer Cristian Castro, and Ryan Anthony Muñiz (August 16, 2003). There were many problems in the marriage, and the couple separated in early 2002. They later reconciled and renewed their vows in a formal ceremony on December 7, 2002 at San Juan’s Cathedral in Puerto Rico. The rocky marriage came to an end in October 2003 with Dayanara filing for divorce in January 2004. To help in her recovery from the divorce, Dayanara traded her engagement ring for a diamond-encrusted Cartier watch and wrote the book Married to Me: How Committing to Myself Led to Triumph After Divorce.

When his divorce proceedings began, Anthony was spotted with long-time friend Jennifer Lopez. Prior to his first marriage and her second, they had briefly dated. Lopez and Anthony married on June 5, 2004, less than a week after his divorce was finalized. Guests had been invited to an “afternoon party”, unaware they were attending a wedding. Lopez gave birth to their children, twins Emme Maribel Muñiz and Maximillian David Muñiz on February 22, 2008. People (magazine) paid $6 million for the first photos of the twins. In 2009, Anthony and Lopez purchased a stake in the Miami Dolphins. They joined several personalities in buying small stakes in the club, including Gloria and Emilio EstefanVenus and Serena Williams, and Fergie. They bought two houses in Brookville, New York but Anthony and Lopez announced their separation in July 2011, with Anthony filing for divorce on April 9, 2012. Their divorce was finalized on June 18, 2014, with Lopez winning primary custody of the children.

25. A few months later, slap No. 5 is given.

26. Followed immediately by slap No. 6.

 27. In winter 2011, Robin finds out she can never have children.

28. In spring 2012, Lily and Marshall’s son, Marvin, is born.

29. In winter 2012, Barney meets the Mother at a convenience store.

30. And Barney goes home that night to write his final play. He burns his precious playbook.

31. Then, Barney proposes to Robin.

32. In May 2013, on her way to Robin and Barney’s wedding, Lily meets the Mother.

 33. The next day, the Mother picks up Marshall and Marvin on the side of the road.

34. A few hours later, slap No. 7 is given.

35. That night, Ted hears the Mother sing for the first time.

36. And (early) the next morning, Marshall finds out Lily is pregnant with their second child.

37. A few minutes before walking down the aisle, Robin (literally) runs into the Mother.

38. At the beginning of his wedding ceremony, Marshall gives Barney the 8th and final slap.

39. And a few minutes later, Robin and Barney get married.

40. A few hours after the wedding, Ted meets the Mother, whose name is Tracy McConnell.

 41. Three days later, Ted and Tracy have their first kiss.

42. In 2015, they get engaged.

43. A few months later, in the midst of planning their wedding, Ted and Tracy find out they’re pregnant with their first child.

44. And in May 2016, Barney and Robin announced they’ve split up.

45. That same night, it’s revealed Lily is pregnant with her and Marshall’s third child.

46. Since their apartment isn’t big enough for a family of five, Lily and Marshall have to move and the gang finally says goodbye to the apartment.

47. In 2017, Ted and Tracy’s son Luke is born.

48. In 2018, Marshall becomes a judge!

49. In 2020, Barney gets a woman (No. 31) pregnant and has a daughter named Ellie.

50. On a Thursday in 2020, Ted and Tracy get married.

51. And in 2024, Tracy dies after getting sick.

52. In 2030, Ted tells his children the story of how he met their mother.

53. And that same night, he steals a blue french horn for Robin again.

10 Ways to Attract Positive Energy!

1.  Love and accept yourself as you are right now.  Start a list to remind yourself of all your wonderful qualities.  Add to it every day.

E.g.,  I am the most positive person I know.

2.  Free yourself from past resentments and disappointments about who you were yesterday.  Stop engaging in self-blame and guilt for past acts and omissions.  Today is the first day of the rest of your life.  Revel in it.

As Scrooge announced on Christmas morn, “I am not the man I was!”

3.  Let go of any and all resentment you’re hanging onto about everyone and everything else.  Stop looking for reasons to criticize and blame others for their acts and omissions.  Let go of your desire to control others.

The past is gone.  It is what it is, and cannot be changed.  Let it go.

4.  Stop giving your power away.  Use your time, energy, and vitality wisely.  Every time you choose to focus on a negative, you are depleting your reserves rather than re-charging your batteries.

Focus on circulating and re-circulating positive, life-affirming ideas.

5.  Use creative visualization and your imagination to your advantage, not your detriment.  Instead of picturing worst case scenarios, see things as you want them to be.  Visualize yourself doing things in a state of perfect health.

Visualize ideal outcomes and happy endings, not dire consequences.

 6.  Do not speak of your illness, or dis-ease with others.  The more attention you place on what you don’t want in your life, the more energy it absorbs.   Remove your attention from your dis-ease.  Put your focus and attention on the things in your life that make you feel good.

Starve your illness and dis-ease by refusing to dwell on them.

7.  Love is the antidote to fear.  If you appreciate the many blessings in your life, and express gratitude for anything and everything, you begin to flow in  a healing bath (rather than languishing in toxins).  Develop an attitude of gratitude by making a list of all the things you are grateful for, including  increased health and vitality.

Be grateful for the health and well-being coming your way.

8.  Recognize that you have the power to heal yourself.  That healing power flows from the thoughts you think.  Allow positive thoughts to circulate, eliminating stress and boosting your immune system.

There is no such thing as incurable.  Miracles abound.

9.  Be happy.  Appreciate this moment.  Resist nothing.  Love yourself and others.  Be  grateful for small blessings.  Make happiness your number one  priority.  When you remain positive, you summon well-being, and vanquish  illness and dis-ease.

When we exist in a state of happiness, we boost our immune systems and allow our bodies to use energy reserves for healing.

10.  Laugh!  Laugh again!  Watch funny movies and recall memories that make you laugh.  Once you access the joy within, let it expand to fill your entire being, crowding out illness and dis-ease.

Laugh your way back to health.

These strategies work, but you must remember to apply them in your life.  Not once, not twice … EVERY DAY!

They won’t work if you give up, collapse into a heap, revert back to your previous negativity, while whining, It’s too hard.

Of course it’s hard.  But it’s worth it … after all, your health, vitality, and freedom are at stake.

Master your thoughts, master your life.

Catching up with Bruno Mars

With three sold-out Blaisdell Arena shows in the books and their history-making ticket sales now the stuff of legend — all three concerts sold-out in less than two hours — Bruno Mars finally has time to take a deep breath, enjoy his time at home and speak with the local media before heading back out on the next leg of his 14-month Moonshine Jungle Tour next month.

“We saved Hawaii for last,” Mars said Monday afternoon in an unanticipated telephone interview before the final performance of his three-show homestand. The Hawaii dates followed a seven-week swing through Australia, New Zealand and nine countries in Asia. It penciled out as 23 shows in 45 days, followed by a five-day break before Friday’s concert.

“I’ve been so many places in Asia and Australia, places I can’t even spell,” he said, sounding like the same soft-spoken guy we talked with 2010. “It’s great to be back in Hawaii. I want everyone on Oahu to know how proud I am to come from here.

“I haven’t done any press since the Super Bowl (in February), but this is Hawaii.”

In response to a question that would have been asked if he’d had time to talk before the three Blaisdell Arena concerts, Mars acknowledged things have changed since he performed here in support of his multi-platinum debut, “Doo-Wops & Hooligans,” in December 2010.

When asked if there is a place he can go without being recognized and drawing a crowd, he fell silent.

“I like to talk with people,” Mars finally said after a moment of silent thought, adding that these days he has to be careful. When a crowd forms and people get excited, there’s always a chance people will start pushing and shoving.

“I don’t want anybody to get hurt,” he said.

The break in the tour schedule means time with family for Mars and his older brother, Eric Hernandez, a member of The Hooligans from day one and his partner in the years of struggle that preceded Mars’ “overnight success” in 2010. Bruno and Eric’s father, Pete “Dr. Doo Wop” Hernandez, and their uncle, Lawrence Bayot, opened the Blaisdell engagement as members of the Love Notes, but the superstar remarked that he had “more than 220 family here.”

That means there’s a lot of catching up to do. Looking forward to those precious days between Hawaii and the next leg of the tour, Mars said he’d like to write a song for his next album, title yet to be decided.

What does he miss about Hawaii?

“Zippy’s,” he replied instantaneously. “If they ever come to Los Angeles, I want to be there.”

As for that lyric switch he made to “Billionaire” on Friday about wanting to be the cover of MidWeek, “I was just freestyling. I wasn’t thinking about it at the time, but I was on the cover of MidWeek. I think I was four.”

That would have been around 1990, when he was known nationally as The World’s Youngest Elvis. He said those video clips from 25 years ago “haunt” him sometimes, but he’s learned to live with it.

“There I am, two feet tall, with the hair and the glittery gold suit, but that’s where I was back then,” he said. “I grew up listening to Elvis and Jackie Wilson and James Brown and Michael Jackson.”

Any advice for aspiring entertainers, would-be hit-makers and pop stars?

“Be prepared to work hard at whatever it is you want to do.”

Was playing the National Football League’s Super Bowl halftime show for a television audience of more than 115 million people a break-through performance, in terms of reaching people who weren’t aware of the range of his talents as a singer, dancer and musician?

“It ain’t my job to think about that kind of stuff,” said Mars. “I just gotta go out there and give it my all.”

Any truth to those stories that you’re planning to get married?

If he could change something about the music business, Mars said he’d make people leave their recording devices at home before coming out to enjoy the show.

“In the old days, if you went into a show with a video camera to record it, you’d be lucky to leave with your camera,” he said. “Now everybody brings their smart phones and records everything. I’d like people to come to the shows and enjoy them like they did in the old days. I don’t want people to come and then say, ‘I saw it all last night on YouTube.’

“Would I rather perform for a thousand people with cell phones or two people without? Of course I’ll take the thousand, but I wish that they’d come and enjoy the show while its happening. The show is what it’s about. It’s what I love doing, the live thing, the performance, with the audience.”

The third of three Bruno Mars concerts at Blaisdell Arena was suspended on Monday after a disruption during the first song.

The cause of the interruption was not announced, but the concert resumed after approximately 10 people were removed from the audience.

The interruption lasted about 15 minutes.

[2/7] Royal Pairings - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

In 2001, Middleton met Prince William while they were students at the University of St. Andrews. The couple began dating in 2003, although their relationship remained unconfirmed.

In April 2007 Prince William and Middleton split up. The couple decided to break up during a holiday in the Swiss resort of Zermatt. Clarence House declined to comment about the relationship’s end, according to The Times, stating, “We don’t comment on Prince William’s private life”. Newspapers speculated about the reasons for the split, although these reports relied on anonymous sources. Middleton and her family attended the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium, where she and Prince William sat two rows apart. The couple were subsequently seen together in public on a number of occasions and news sources stated that they had “rekindled their relationship”.

Prince William and Catherine Middleton became engaged in October 2010, in Kenya, during a 10-day trip to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to celebrate Prince William’s passing his RAF helicopter search and rescue course. Clarence House announced the engagement on 16 November 2010. Prince William gave Middleton the engagement ring that had belonged to his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. The couple married in Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011, (St. Catherine’s Day) with the day declared a bank holiday in the United Kingdom. Estimates of the global audience for the wedding ranged around 300 million or more, whilst 26 million watched the event live in Britain alone.

On 3 December 2012, St James’s Palace announced that the Duchess was pregnant with her first child. The announcement was made earlier in the pregnancy than is traditional as she had been admitted to King Edward VII’s Hospital Sister Agnes suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness. She stayed in hospital for three days. On 14 January 2013, St James’s Palace announced that the child was due to be born in July 2013, and that the condition of the Duchess was improving. The Duchess was admitted to St Mary’s Hospital in London in the early stages of labour on the morning of 22 July 2013, and gave birth to a boy, weighing 8 pounds 6 ounces (3.80 kg), at 16:24 BST that day. On 24 July 2013, Kensington Palace announced that the baby would be named George Alexander Louis. The Duchess’s second pregnancy was announced on 8 September 2014. The child will be fourth in line to the throne and is expected to be born in April 2015. As with her first pregnancy, the Duchess suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum. (x)

The Roadmap to Taylor Swift's Record-Breaking Week in 6 (Not So Easy) Steps

The singer and her hard-charging label defied the odds by brilliantly influencing everything from fans’ emotions to lowered expectations to hit almost 1.3 million in sales.

Here’s a head-scratcher for the digital era: even though U.S. album sales have plummeted 20 percent since Taylor Swift’s last album, Red, was issued in 2012, the singer scored the best opening week of her career with 1989, moving 1.28 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. With that debut, Swift not only registers the only instant-platinum release of 2014, but bests her last effort by 7.6 percent (the only other album to hit the million mark: Frozen, which has sold 3.5 million units, most of them this year) and beats previous 1989 projections of 750,000 (upped to 900,000 on release day and 1.2 million 48 hours later) by some 500,000 copies. So how did she manage to defy expectations and log the biggest week for an album since 2002, when Eminem's The Eminem Show sold 1.32 million in its second chart week? In a classic Swiftian strategy, the 24-year-old under-promises, over-delivers and then some, while behind the scenes, label Big Machine, and its Universal Music Group support system, drives sales with ruthless focus. Here’s how she beat the odds, all with an aw-shucks smile.

It wasn’t just the CD-only, exclusive-to-Target bonus tracks that drove fans to purchase a copy of 1989during release week (a tactic used for Red and 2010's Speak Now as well). Each disc also offers a set of Polaroid-like photos – five different collections were printed, but consumers don’t know which set they’ll receive – and a unique code that can be used to enter the “1989 Swiftstakes,” where the grand prize (250 in all) is two passes to a meet-and-greet experience with the singer and a concert. The catch? The entry period ended Nov. 2, the final day of 1989’s first tracking week.

Swift’s fans “want a close connection, and she gives it to them consistently,” says one UMG insider who adds that the singer’s engagement with her audience is “the best we’ve ever seen.” During release week, Swift initiated a frenzy of online conversation by releasing 1989 an hour early, making the announcement on Twitter at 11:18 p.m. ET on Oct. 26. The next day, she began an exhaustive campaign that involved retweeting and reblogging fans on Tumblr who posted pictures of themselves holding the album. With it, the Twitter hashtag #taylurking was born, a cheeky way for Swift to let her fans know she was watching. Throughout the week, more than 2 million mentions of “Taylor Swift” were registered on the platform, with online chatter peaking at 70,000 tweets per minute the night of Oct. 26, according to data provided by Twitter. Moreover, adds the Universal executive, Swift’s fans protect her. “They are superinvolved, making sure that other fans don’t get a copy of the album and upload to the Internet.”

Swift launched 1989 with a live stream, but after shaking it off for the first time, it was bye-bye Web, hello terrestrial broadcast media: The MTV Video Music AwardsGood Morning America (twice), The Ellen DeGeneres ShowThe Voice (twice),America’s Top 40 With Ryan Seacrest, Sirius XM Town Hall, Late Show With David LettermanJimmy Kimmel Live! The Talk – even NPR got in on the rollout. “Taylor, her management and the label were as aggressive as an organization can be,” says another UMG insider of her TV and radio blitz. The end result: 58.6 million people potentially reached.

Delaying a new album’s arrival at streaming services to help boost initial sales is a tactic that has served top-name artists well, including Swift. So 1989’s non-streaming status was not a surprise – until a week after release, when Big Machine pulled Swift’s entire catalog from interactive streaming services with an ad-supported, free tier – key among them: Spotify – but kept it at premium-tiers and/or pay-only services Beats Music, Rdio, Rhapsody and Google Play All Access, ensuring higher, subscriber-only royalties.

No stranger to product endorsements and tie-ins, Swift returned to such blue-blooded partners as Diet Coke (her ad features the ultimate hook, dozens of adorable kittens, capped off by a 1989plug) and also teamed up with the ubiquitous Subway for a national promotion. Her album was also carried in supermarket chains including Kroger’s and drug-store chains (Walgreens). And in exchange for the Target exclusives, the country’s second-biggest album retailer responded with a big marketing push.

Seven weeks ago, UMG projected that 1989 would sell 1.1 million units, but that figure was readjusted to 750,000 units about four weeks before its release. It wasn’t for lack of confidence in Swift’s commercial power, but because overall sales have declined so dramatically in 2014 (blame the shrinking download business and the growth of streaming services) many doubted any artist could hit the first-week million mark. Additionally, there were fears that country fans would abandon Swift because she was fully embracing a pop sound. The payoff: a steady climb in projections, eventually matching in seven days what Beyoncé did in 17 with her surprise-released, self-titled effort, one of 2013’s biggest out-the-gate sellers (as an iTunes exclusive, Beyoncé scanned 617,000 albums in three days). The ever-calculating Swift needs no surprise.

Friends: Part 1

This is a phanfic that I kind of got the idea from in that episode of Friends where Rachel finds out that Ross is in love with her.

But anyway, hope you like it!

“Have fun at your birthday party” Dan said as he tugged his coat on. “Sorry I can’t be there, my mom’s been planning this trip for a while” I followed him down the stairs to the door.

“I know. It’s fine” I reassured him. “Besides we don’t have to celebrate on my actual birthday. We can do something when you get home” Dan smiled.

“Right!” he buttoned his coat and then looked around. “Uh, I think I’ve got everything now” he said. I handed him his suitcase.

“I’ll see you in a week!” I said as I leaned in to hug him.

“Yeah” he hugged me back. “See you in a week”
