Some Zuko and Katara fics

(this is especially for yell-allons-y, damonsbonbon and hyperspacemashmallow, hope this helps :D  )

  1. I’ve included lil summaries that may or may not reveal spoilers cuz sometimes the author descriptions don’t do it for me. Warning there, you can skip over these and read only the bolded, italicized author summaries if you so wish.
  2. Generally, if anything has an M rating, you can skip through the explicit stuff.
  3. Anything with  *** are favorite stories of mine right now.
  4. Many of the authors listed have profiles full of other great stories not listed on here, so I have linked all of their profile links as well so you can check those out too :)
  5. Finally, most important for everyone to do, REVIEW THE STORIES! So many awesome authors stop writing because there is no feedback from the readers. I have found that even if an author hasn’t updated in years (I’m talking several), as long as you try to review every chapter letting the writer know what you did and didn’t like about the characterization, plot, and writing itself, it is enough encouragement to get them motivated and updating again. So once again, REVIEW!!!

- The Last Waterbender*** by Haikoui (Rated T, 56k+ words, WIP)

The Southern Raiders found the last waterbender, leaving her mother alive, and took the child with them to the Fire Nation as a prisoner. Zutara AU. The avatar has not been found yet, and Zuko has not been banished yet, either. Rated T (and maybe M at some point… maybe!) for later chapters.

Slow to develop relationship (they’ve just started interacting due to certain circumstances), both learning things, unlearning prejudices and propaganda, very IC, very good OC’s too.  The plot is super interesting as the author manages to include both things from the show as well as their own very original ideas. I like how even though this isn’t  a canon story line, the characters are still IC, something I cannot say for even those who write stories that coordinate with canon. The suspense and surprises are very well thought out, too, as the author has an endless supply of creative villains and an interesting plot. Overall, super awesome.

- Jasmine*** by Yorushike (Rated T, 140k+ words, WIP)

AU, Katara, traveling companion of the Avatar, had always dreamed of the day the war would end, but she had never thought that she would be forced to marry Firelord Zuko, who was said to have killed his own father, for this to happen. Zuko had no other goal than to repent for his sins and bring peace to the world, even if both his allies and enemies feared and hated him. Zutara,

While Katara is travelling with Gaang for training, Chief Hakoda is captured by a cold and distant Fire Lord Zuko, who has killed off his own family to become ruler and is feared by pretty much everyone, even his own citizens. Instead of torturing or killing Hakoda, he asks for Katara’s hand in marriage as a symbol of peace, to which she reluctantly agrees. She finds out things, like he’s actually trying to atone for his sins and those of the Fire Nation, and that he is a genuinely good but tortured man. Everyone is so IC, with a “I’m not deserving of love or anything good, imma just brood over here in this dark corner while trying to heal wounds i’ve inflicted on world” pre-Gaang Zuko and a “STFU, ZUKO, YOU ARE ACTUALLY A BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLY CREATURE AND A PRETTY CHILL GUY WHY DON’T YOU GET YOUR ANGSTY HEAD OUT OF YOUR LILY WHITE BEHIND AND SEE THAT i pet ur face now k frand?motherly Katara. The author also keeps Gaang in character. You will laugh out loud, if not let out one of those ugly laugh snorts every time the whole Gaang is present, especially seeing awkward ass Zuko interacting with them. You will cry at a couple of points in the story (especially one chapter in particular but i’m not telling cuz i’m a cruel person and want your heart completely unprepared for the pain WOOOOOOOOAH HOHOOOOooOooooOo). It is a bit slow at first, but that adds to strong development between Katara and Zuko, as well as setting up a good plot with interesting politics and culture. At this point, shit is going down but you have no idea what it is yet so SUPER SCARY but good yes. Occasional spelling errors, but not super present.

Butterflies and Hurricanes by Rebirth of the Phoenix (Rated T, 103k+ words, Complete)

“You may find yourself capturing hearts that you are forbidden to keep.” She is a servant. He is a Prince. Together they are about to go against everything that keeps the world at peace. Zutara

AU, This one is already pretty popular. Katara is bought taken as little girl to Fire Nation, becomes servant to Mai, later to Royal Family, becomes friendly with Zuko, whole tiime she has little memory of her family, Zuko puts pieces together and they face shit. Pretty IC for the most part (I just wish Katara was a little bit more outspoken but at the same time it was understandable considering her station for a large portion of the story), good OC’s that you’ll like too.

- Fortress *** by SilverLining33  (Rated  T, 69+ words, WIP)

As a child, I was blind to the tragedies of the world. I chose not to understand. I chose not to acknowledge. I chose not to act. But now, things are different. This war has taken everything from me: my home, my family, my freedom. No more waiting for rescue. No more sitting by and relying on hope and faith. It’s time for me to take action. It’s time for me to fight back. AU.

WOW. this story. this story. THIS STORY. ohmygaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhHHhHhHh

I cannot begin to tell you all how great this story is and how much I think you’ll enjoy it too.

AU, Fire Nation has pretty much taken over and colonized the whole world, including the Southern Water Tribe. Covers all that shitty shit that colonized people would go through like unfair and harsh government and brutality. Fetus Katara meets Fetus Zuko, son of mean governor Ozai who rules over South Pole at this point in the story. Shit happens, big stuff too, but I won’t reveal what. Fast forward several years, Ozai has long left with family in tow to Fire Nation, Katara thinks she’s done with them (hehe WRONG). The Water tribe and Katara suffer horribly, she’s left with no family (they’re gone for different important reasons), she’s depressed and filled with anger, has to hide waterbending or risk imprisonment and death, all while dealing with a fire nation soldier who is stationed in the South Pole and has the hots for her (hehe… pun… i’m sorry.) that she can’t stand… and then A LOT OF STUFF HAPPENS SHIT HITS THE FAN OHMYGAHD AND SHE HAS TO  GO SOMEWHERE BECAUSE OF SOMETHING BIG AND I WON’T SAY TOO MUCH BUT BAM, SHE MEETS LIL ASSHOLE KID SHE MET AS A CHILD THAT WAS THE GOVERNOR’S SON ONLY HE IS NOW AN ADULT ASSHOLE AND HAS A SCAR AND I CAN’T SAY ANYTHING ELSE BUT THERE IS MORE THAN THAT GOING ON AT THE SAME TIME TOO.

Basically awesome story. This author obviously took the time to not only research their stuff, but also spent time diving into the characters to portray very raw and realistic emotions and reactions. This gives very awesome, IC people, which is what I want from my fics but don’t always find. To add on to that, even the authors OC’s were well developed. I was surprised by the quality of these characters– even people who appeared for no more than one chapter made a big impact on me and the story. And the plot itself is very nice. The romance isn’t what drives it– there are outside factors like a freaking war and people fighting that move the plot along which adds to the realism. This also throws in the suspense, because while it may be safe for the mean time, there are people on the other side of the world who could be planning some shit.

Anyway, good story. Really, really good story. It has lots of potential and I hope to see it grow to a 200k fic complete with the main seasons covered in ATLA as the author’s interpretation is fun to read.

- Dancing in the Dark by DamageCtrl (Rated T, 64k+ Words, Complete)

AUPWP: Having heard a rumor about two tea servers in the lower tiers of Ba Sing Se, Katara and Toph sneak away go to investigate only to have their suspicions confirmed. ZutaraBlutara

Another pretty popular one. For anyone who likes season 2 Zutara or Blutara, this is for you. It’s pretty cute. Zuko disguises himself as the Blue Spirit to get information on Gaang, Toph and Katara sneak around and find out Zuko and Iroh are working in teashop, Blue Spirit realizes Katara is a freaking idiot at dancing, he gives lessons to her cuz Zuko knows fancy royal dances, she falls in love with Blue Spirit, Zuko falls in love with her, stuff happens, OH NO WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF KATARA FINDS OUT WHO THE BLUE SPIRIT REALLY IS, on top of EVERYTHING else happening??!?1!?! Anyway, cutesy cute fic.

- Time and Time Again*** by Dra323 (Rated T, 36k+ words, WIP)

A sigh of relief barely escaped her lips before rough hands grabbed her body and pushed her back against the tree. Katara screamed and attempted to claw at the body of the person holding her, only to have her hands captured. “Well, doesn’t this seem familiar?” He hissed.

Starts off at Waterbending Scroll episode, goes different direction. Zuko is pretty much the insane, reckless, violent, angsty lil shit we see in Season 1. Katara is super sassy and coolio and tough and if bad stuff happens to her, she doesn’t do any of that stupid “cowering in fear but falls in love with mean guy cuz yay Stockholm Syndrome!” shit, instead she does the “imma be awful to you if you’re awful to me, and the fact that you’re fire nation doesn’t help you at all you asshat little brat.” I like the frustrated, crazy Zuko, I like how smart, sneaky, and resourceful Katara is in this story as well.

Lots of shit happens from the moment Katara is taken to his ship. Right now, where I’m at in the story, they’re on a deserted island and have to depend on each other and Zuko is starting to realize “wow, I’ve been a big asshat to Katara, and she’s my only means of survival right now, I should be nice and appreciate what she has done for me so far”, kinda hinting at the beginning of a redemption arc, while Katara is like “he can go shove a coconut up his ass I’m not messing with that tool ffs I hate his stupid angry ass byyyyye”. Jet has also just been introduced and is as insane as ever, a big wild card right now and no one knows what’s going to happen with this guy walking around.

Right now it’s heading in a very awesome direction, the emotions are there and you will get tense while reading. The action scenes are well written and you’ll be freaking out  when you get to them. I’m hoping that the author will write this as a 200k fic that covers the whole show to the end (and maybe beyond??) because I am liking how the author is writing not only the characters, but their relationship development too. It would be cool to see them interacting to different situations introduced throughout the show. There is the occasional spelling error, but not so obvious that it takes away from the story. Really good though so far, you should definitely check this out.

- In the Same Candlelight by Like a Dove (Rated T, 76+ words, Complete)

In a world where there is no war, Zuko and Katara spend their summers together. Growing up is messy, embarrassing, and at times sad, but they think it might be okay because they have each other. Edited summary.

AU, no war. Aang stopped Fire Nation from messing world up, he’s now a pretty old guy who is still adorable af. Water Tribe siblings and Fire Nation siblings spend vacations with each other and pretty much grow up with each other. More cutesy stuff.

- I Was Not Magnficent by Like a Dove (Rated M, 53k+ words, Complete)

When Zuko first meets the waterbender with the scars, he’s fascinated by her. His fascination quickly turns into something much more. Soon Zuko will have to confront his greatest enemy - himself. AU.

AU, No Aang found from iceberg, Zuko didn’t speak out against general at war meeting and is still a prince in the Fire Nation, Fire Nation has pretty much taken over the whole world with Sozin’s Comet. Because of problems with little rebellions, Fire Nation starts messed up breeding program so they can raise their own earthbenders and waterbenders to enforce Fire Nation rule around world. They finally bring in a scarred waterbender for the program, shit goes down. Pretty good. Zuko is a snotty little dick who you kinda wanna slap (Katara actually does this, so no worries there) but grows into a more honorable guy. Katara is pretty cool too. My only complaint is that I didn’t like how quickly they immediately fell in love with each other. It felt a little rushed considering that they really didn’t confront many obstacles and personal beliefs that would keep them from wanting to suck face, but otherwise pretty cool story.

- Resting in a Raze (Sequel to I Was Not Magnificent) by Like a Dove (Rated M, 24k+ words, WIP)

Zuko and Sokka go searching for a waterbender who has been long lost. Slowly but surely their world begins to erupt around them. Sequel to ‘I Was Not Magnificent’.

To be honest, I haven’t kept up too much with this, but I figured people might want to know that there’s a sequel so BAM here it is

- Tempest in a Teacup*** by AkaVertigo (Rated T, 34k+ words, IDK if it’s supposed to be complete, it felt like there was supposed to be more to me…)

Fate puts Katara in the Fire Nation to grow up in the company of a Dragon, a prince, and a lot of good tea. AU Zutara…of a sort.

I’m pretty sure this is one of the most famous Zutara fics out there. AU, Iroh finds Katara as a little girl, raises her, she and Zuko grow close. This is really beautifully written. It manages to deliver strong emotions, humor, great dialogue, and an overall good plot through gorgeous passages. It’s set up like poetry at times but it is awesome. Pretty good stuff here.

- The Chief and I *** by jassmarie19 (Rated T, 21k+ words, WIP)

100 years after the War started the Fire Nation has managed to add on all of the four nations as Provinces, except the Southern Water Tribe. It is Zuko’s duty to travel to this land of people that shut themselves away from the world at the onset of the War and convince them to surrender. The King and I inspired AU. Rating may change.

This story is super awesome. I’m not gonna lie, the first chapter had me thinking that there wouldn’t be much to expect from the story but I WAS A FOOL AND HAVE SEEN THE ERROR IN MY WAYS. The plot is super cool.  There is much tension between the accomplished asshole Prince Zuko and a proud and sassy Chief Katara. Katara has some struggles she must face before and during the Fire Nation’s unexpected and very much unwanted arrival, such as just wanting her dad and bro home to take over. She and Zuko constantly butt heads as the arrogant (and very ignorant) Zuko tries to force Katara to surrender the Southern Water Tribe to the Fire Nation (or empire, at this point). Where I am right now, it looks like Zuko will be pulling in man power to take over the Water Tribe through force as he is getting frustrated (in more than one way, tbh, which is entertaining cuz Katara is just like GUHhhHhHHHHROSS GET YOUR WEIRD ASS TYRANNICAL SELF AWAY FROM ME). I can’t wait for the next update as shit just went down cuz Zuko is an impulsive dumbass who “doesn’t think things through” so suspense is there and very strong. Definitely worth reading.

- Polar Nights by crystalline talisman (Rated T, 72k+ words, WIP)

In order to arrange a treaty for the long standing war between the Water Tribe and Fire Nation, Prince Zuko is sent to the South Pole to arrange a truce by Fire Lord Lu Ten, where he is greeted by subzero temperatures, sea prunes, and quirky customs. This of course, is a cake walk compared to the revelation he’ll be marrying the stubborn spiritual leader, Katara. AU. Zutara.

Kind of a challenge to the idea of Katara being the one to leave her homeland for a political marriage. This is really entertaining, with spot on characters and interactions, an interesting look at South Water Tribe and Fire Nation cultures, and a fun plot overall. It shouldn’t be so entertaining seeing Zuko have a hard time, but with so many funny components to the many challenges he has to face in order to be seen as “proper husband material”, you can’t help but hope for more. Katara is also very awesome. She is a priestess with a stubborn personality, trying to face her own fate and what is expected of her in her position. She that takes quite a bit of joy out of jostling Zuko around. Fun. They are growing to at least see each other as possible friends where I am at in the story, with the prospect of heading back to the Fire Nation for another ceremonial process there. Humorous with great drama, this one is a pretty great read.

-Water Wench *** by Meeknchic (Rated M, 3k+ words, WIP)

“What is your idea of justice, Prince Zuko?” she asked through the fixed smirk. The woman sauntered closer. “Would you throw me in your dungeon?”

This is such a funny fic. I’m not sure if I should label it as “humor” or cracktastic. Poor Zuko is just trying his hardest and then he has to deal with a dumbass military friend, Chang, (who is bae tbh if he isn’t at first he will be later) and a snarky waterbender that just won’t give him the Avatar. The thing is, she doesn’t know that she’s giving shelter to the master of four elements. Each chapter so far has basically been Zuko’s failed attempts at getting the Avatar, persuading Katara to hand him over, ignoring his attraction for the uninterested Katara, while his stupid ass friend is laughing at Zuko when he is on fire when butt naked (this actually happens). The dialogue is witty and hilarious, the characters are quite on point as far as sticking to their canon selves goes. The author’s main OC (Chang the bae) has so much personality considering that he isn’t in the fic as often as Z and K. Where I am at, Katara has just been apprehended and is pissed.

Anyway, super fun, quick read, so you READ AND FINISH IT WHILE TAKING A SHIT.

-Down in Flames *** by sjdboom (Rated M, 80k+ words, WIP)

As Katara battles to protect the Avatar and restore balance to the world, she struggles to ignore the one major, golden-eyed confliction who keeps getting in her way. Rated M for chapters 22 & 26 ;)

like damn this fic has the best of everything and the things I listed above only scratch the surface. you get a reasonably paced development between Zuko and Katara, you get betrayal, you get a sneaky Zuko with inner turmoil, you get a smart and independent katara, you get a capture where SHE DON’T FALL IN LOVE PLS STOP THIS AWFUL TROPE DON’T DO THIS PLS. you also get an awesome plot that has you hopping all over the world, the Gaang present or working in background of story (you know, like what they would do in their situations, instead of fangirling over z and k…. they gonna do stuff with the war), Katara and Zuko having to face each other and themselves, just so much happens in this fic for how short it is and it is handled so well. I am praying for the next update.

Super awesome, you’ll immediately get hooked.

-Facets*** by balai (Rated T, 61k+ words, WIP)

It was unfathomable. Imagine the rumours, the scandal that would spread at the idea of the Fire Lord sneaking about under the cover of darkness, donning the mask of the Blue Spirit. But he would do it. He knew the risks he took. Still, he would do it for her.

Oh you want a punch to the heart? read this fic then and feel you insides cry. like damn this fic is so good and you will be filled with emotions so no mascara while reading this one. basically post war Zuko and Katara dealing with external and internal forces, growing closer as they overcome many obstacles in efforts to help the world get back on its feet. Very nice.

-The Plan*** by Sisters-From-Hell (Rated T, 53k+ words, WIP)

Katara was captured after trying to save Haru. Now she is a concubine in the Fire Lord’s Palace and she must find a way to save her tribe and the world. AU based on the movie “One Night With the King”

GTFO with all those weird “KAtaara is a concubine to PRinc no FIRE LORD ZUko but they fall into luv <3” shit cuz that is not what would happen and YOU know it and thankfully this author knows it too.

Katara, being Katara, isn’t just gonna sit around all doe eyed while the world goes up in flames (pun), and she gets captured by the Fire Nation while causing shit for the nation. Sent to its capital, about to be given to old creepy guys for “personal use” a certain angel comes to her in the form of a tea loving uncle of the freaking Fire Lord. Iroh is basically a sneaky little shit but you know that’s Iroh and we love him for it. Zuko and Katara meet, it goes BADLY, and they hate each other (at worst) or ignore and look down on each other (at best). Does a pretty good job of subtly acknowledging stuff like the prejudices one would see in a colonizing, warring country, and doesn’t have Katara and Zuko falling in love immediately. There’s an incredible amount of tension and contempt between the two, and when they aren’t making the other’s life shitty, they’re creating plans. For Zuko, to use Katara as a tool for the war to “persuade” the Water Tribes to surrender to Fire Nation rule. With Katara, she takes advantage of living in the palace to soak up every bit of information at her disposal, with the hopes of using it later to give to the resistance groups or to take out the Fire Lord himself. She so far has kept her bending abilities hidden, and she has attracted the eye of certain Fire Nation men that Zuko is to deal with. Right now, it seems like Zuko is beginning to find her attractive (not admitting that to himself, though) and she is literally puking at the thought of being romantic with him, even if it is for her benefit in the long run. Also, a certain tribesman may have just cracked open the iceberg…

Super awesome, definitely should read if you want a break from the never-ending “katara-gets-captured-and-instead-of-working-to-end-war-or-to-acknowledge-and-fight-back-against-oppressive-nation-and-people-that-have-messed-up-her-life-she-gonna-fall-for-a-dude’s-diq-while-he-ignores-years-of-propoganda-and-shitty-parenting-and-decides-he-suddenly-likes-katara-too” stories.

-Fallacy by BloomRay (Rated T, 15k+ words, WIP)

Three years have passed since the Avatar’s defeat and the Fire Nation’s victory in the war. Katara and a handful of survivors have sought refuge amongst the ruins of the Western Air Temple. That is, until someone shows up. A very unwelcome someone, as it so happens. AU.

Not gonna lie, when I first read this, I was like “no”. I didn’t want to see Zuko regress back into his Season 1 personality as it would have been out of character, and I don’t like “Aang died…. okay anyway Zuko and Katara now suck face happy happy ending yes!” stories

This doesn’t do that wow I don’t know why I thought it would thank Jesus that’s not what we readers will have in this story. There were plot twists and major surprises and it’s only the beginning of the story. Very good so far, it has lots of potential.

-The Prophecy by XrhiaX (Rated T, 19k+ words, WIP)

AU. The Avatar lives in chains. The Earth Kingdom has fallen. Prince Zuko is a prisoner within the palace for his traitorous actions. And a Prophecy foretells of how the Last Southern Waterbender pertains to the Fire Nation’s ultimate victory.

To be honest I have no idea what’s happening right now and I mean that in a good way. Basically, you have a different plot running with the idea of Zuko still suffering punishment, but now he has a new “cell mate” (will make sense once you read). There’s still a search for the Avatar, and a confused and pissed Katara is taken to the Fire Nation to live in a gold cage, for reasons she doesn’t know either. There is obviously something keeping her there, as characters like Lu Ten are acting strangely while visiting a lonely Zuko, and there are talks of a prophecy. I can’t wait to see what will happen next, as the author already shows they have something planned with the way they are setting up everything so far. Since it is told from Zuko’s and Katara’s limited points of view, we only see so much, adding to the suspense. Pretty cool fic.

-Aerials*** by Bravada (Rated M, 28k+ words, WIP)

AU. One hundred years ago, the Avatar was killed, and the benders were no more. But now that the Fire Lord has merged with a demon, the Spirits are going to have to set things straight. Zutara, Taang, Sukka.

I love this fic. Zuko and Uncle washed up on SWT shore, taking on aliases to avoid death (confrontation, though, is something they do face and face often). Zuko slowly bonds with STW, in particular the two children of Chief Hakoda. Right when it seems like everything is going well, BAM SHIT GOES DOWN, IDENTITIES EXPOSED, and that’s just the beginning. Where I am right now, Zuko, Katara, Sokka, and Iroh left for the Southern Air Temples in search for people similar to Zuko and Katara. I love how in character everyone is, how fun the dialogues are as they always seem to grow a bit after a conversation, and the writing overall flows well. Every little interaction adds so much to the story. I enjoyed how Zuko grows from awkward and angry to awkward and nice, along with how Katara is strong, but also affectionate. The little events that help them to grow together are super fun and exciting. The other characters so far, such as Hakoda, Iroh, Sokka, and Zhao also make big impressions.

Great, fun read.

-The Spirit’s Beauty: A Fairy Tale of Sorts by NonsensicalLyrics  (Rated T, 28k+ words, Complete)

When Sokka and Aang go snooping around a seemingly abandoned ship only to discover it’s cursed, Katara must sacrifice herself in exchange for the Avatar’s freedom. Based loosely on the traditional fairy tale, “Beauty and the Beast”. Bluetara/Zutara.

This follows pretty closely to the original Disney story while remaining true to ATLA, I was surprised that this could be accomplished and done well. Zuko as the beast is endearing and Katara is pretty cool. I loved the whole mythos set up for the story as it added much to the story without taking away the charm ATLA has. It pretty much works like an episode of ATLA as they immediately go along with the main plot there. Pretty nice stuff.

-Reflections Dire by Jadely (Rated K+, 7k+ words, Complete)

News of the Painted Lady’s return spreads all the way to the Fire Nation capital, birthing festivities among the people. And who could happen to stumble into the middle of it with a keen curiosity other than the unsettled prince Zuko, who decides who decides to take up the face of the Blue Spirit one last time to meet the fabled woman himself. But who is who under the moonlight?

Zuko and Katara have to face their demons. Pretty cool, will make you sad for actual Painted Lady and Blue Spirit. Katara’s and Zuko’s interactions are pretty realistic too. Very nice short read.

-Even So*** by lewilder (Rated T, 7k+ words, Complete)

A hundred years after Avatar Roku stops the Fire Nation’s attempts to take over the world, uprisings begin again in the Fire court. After the battles, the new Fire Lord, Zuko, seeks to reaffirm old alliances and looks for a bride from the Southern Water Tribe. Zutara, AU. Oneshot.

Zuko and Katara marry, Katara is stubborn and won’t learn his language, he is still a shy little sweety anyway, they grow close while learning each others languages and the amount of affection between the two is so sweet but believable and not too much. It kinda follows them throughout their married years together (a little bit before for Katara). Very beautiful, can also read while in bathroom stall so double awesome.

-Beneath the Alder Tree by Harky21 (Rated M, 27k+ words, WIP)

“I’ve experienced many things in my time. I’ve seen storms brew and felt the earth quake. But there’s one thing that I’d only ever heard of in the whistling of the wind and on the dying breaths of men.” Beneath the branches of an alder tree a boy and a girl from enemy clans meet and learn that they may not be as different from each other as they thought. Rated M for later chapters.

Really great, set up almost poetically and from the point of a tree. It may sound weird, but it works so well. Katara and Zuko live in neighboring clans at war with each other, but grow very close through out the years in a field between their homes. The tree is a sort of narrator and I read it for the most part in Gandalf’s voice so there’s that. Super nice story with lots of surprises, tension, and great character growth.

-Burn to Ashes by beanaroony (Rated T, 21k+ words, WIP)

This is what the blood of betrayal tastes like, when its claws dig into your chest and tear at your throat and you palate nothing but sorrow and distrust again and again, again and again. S3 finale AU.

Well if you’re up for more angst cuz you just couldn’t get enough from earlier fics, here is this one for you. While heading over to take down Azula during Sozin’s comet, Zuko turns on Katara, believing it was for the best. They have to deal with much tension as Katara is sooooo done at this point and Zuko, being Zuko, just wanted to help but keeps screwing up instead. While they’re interacting, there’s lots going on in the background, mainly with everyone’s favorite batshit crazy royal, Azula. Pretty good so far. Where I’m at in the story, there is a major build up to something big about to happen so yes suspense is there, too.

If there’s something you guys think I forgot, message me and I’ll see that it’s changed. Have fun :)

i will hopefully have fics for pairings like jinko up sometime too.

if this is love

I finally finished something.  Finally. And it’s really fucking long, which wasn’t meant to happen.  Anyway this plot is ruthlessly pulled from an episode of Freaks & Geeks (though with some obvious changes).  Enjoy!

Title comes from the song “Never Going Home” by Phantogram which is ironic but there you go

Dedicated to my wonderful friend @steven-hairrington who deserves the very best (but hopefully this will do until I manage to pull that off)

“Is your brother still sleeping in the basement?” Steve said in greeting as soon as he sat down across from Nancy.

Nancy frowned, swallowing her bite of sandwich before responding.  “Um, not so much since El came back.  Why?”

Jonathan appeared, setting his tray beside hers and she gave him a small smile before looking back at her boyfriend, who was frowning thoughtfully.

“So that pull-out couch down there is up for grabs?” He continued, and Nancy suddenly guessed where this was going.

“You can’t stay with me, Steve.  My mother would have a conniption fit.” Nancy bit into a strawberry, shaking her head firmly.

Steve’s shoulders slumped, and he gave a long drawn-out sigh.

“You could’ve spent another night on my couch if you hadn’t screwed up yesterday,” Jonathan mumbled from behind his sandwich.  Steve threw him a dirty look, but Nancy just frowned.

By the looks of these test results they’re probably… well I’d give them four weeks along at this point?”

“Four weeks,” Mercy just repeated the words dumbly after Doctor Haberlin.

Ja! Tell the subject congratulations for me,” said Haberlin.

“Thank you,” Mercy said hollowly.

“I mean—thank you for the test results,” said Mercy, “Always glad to have a second opinion.”

Mercy ended the call and rubbed her forehead and glanced down at the test, picked it up and looked at it again. So…this was happening. She took a calming inward breath, then felt eyes on her. She turned to see Hana Song standing stone-still in the bathroom doorway, a pink gum bubble on her lips. She dropped the test and it clattered into the sink. Both stared at each other for a few seconds.

“…How much did you hear?” said Mercy, straightening up.

“Hi, I’m wondering if I could have a word with officer Katsuki?”

Yuuri’s spine went stiff at the sound of that voice. He turned back on a heel before he could be spotted, practically running back to his desk and startling Phichit as he filled out a mountain of paperwork.

“He’s here again,” Yuuri hissed under his breath.

It was too early to think coherently.

Lance wished he had gotten coffee first.

He really wished he had gotten coffee. It was too early to be awake.

But here he was. Awake and sitting in the terminal of an airport with a little old lady, trying to connect to the world-wide web via a worldwide travel book, a lonely man asleep with half an omelet still on his plate, and a pile of gum wrappers that didn’t even get close to making it in the trash can. The airport terminal wasn’t busy by any means, but Lance was still pleasantly surprised at how many people were here at five-fifty in the morning. Here and awake.

At least he wasn’t the only one who was barely able to form thoughts and maneuver himself into a waiting chair, after he had watched a man about twice his age run straight into a pillar in the wall. Earlier, a woman had almost taken a morning dip into the fountains. It was safe to say that these people probably weren’t morning people either.

When was the last time you woke up this early? Middle school? Lance groaned, leaning back into his chair. He rubbed his eyes tiredly and glanced over to where Shiro and the others were snoozing in their chairs. At least he wasn’t the only one suffering at this hour. Lance glanced back up at the time board that lay above their waiting area.

              Flight 201CA has landed.

              Oh yeah.

              Keith was coming home.

After five years of service, Keith was finally coming home for good. No more having to go back. No more training others. No more emergency service. Keith had fulfilled his time in the military, paid many prices for it, and he was finally coming home.

Lance had nearly sobbed at learning that his boyfriend of seven years was going to be coming home. Shiro had actually cried (There were tear marks all over Keith’s letter, but that was okay, Lance wasn’t about to ruin the father’s moment). Everyone was more than a little excited about welcoming Keith home, and soon a welcoming party had gone underway under the supervision of Pidge and Coran. Which was not a good idea.

Shiro and Lance both knew that Keith wouldn’t want a big party, but while Shiro wanted to stop the party and keep everyone from overwhelming Keith, Lance didn’t see the harm in getting Keith out. After all a lot of people had missed him while he was gone. Shiro and Lance had argued for a bit about Keith’s party, but eventually Lance won after insisting that Keith should realize how loved he was.

He’d never seen his boyfriend’s father so awed before.

              Hopefully soon-to-be father-in-law.

The heavy weight of a small box in Lance’s pocket suddenly felt much heavier than ever before. His heart rate speed up and soon enough, any trace of sleep was gone and Lance was wide awake. Unlike his companions. For a split second, Lance was quite jealous of how his friends could sleep through this waiting period. As if the rest of their lives didn’t rest on the sole moment of Keith walking through those gates, ready to determine how their futures would end – oh wait, that only affected him. Right.

To be fair though, none of them even knew what plans Lance had made for when Keith came in today. Not even Shiro, which may or may not have been a good idea. Guess I’ll find out soon. Lance thought nervously as he looked down at his watch for the millionth time this morning.

He was so busy lost in thought and thinking about the impending future, that Lance and the others had failed to notice when people had entered into the waiting area from the gates and were now walking towards them. In fact, none of them noticed until a pair of brown combat boots had stopped in Lance’s line of sight and a voice chuckled.

“Keith!” Of course, Shiro was the first to shoot out of his chair, awake in less than a second (damn, Lance needed to learn how to do that). Lance looked up in time to see the others awakening at a slower pace, but with smiles all around and saw Shiro making a break for his son.

Keith, in his uniform with that especially tight black shirt and those loose cargo pants with two sets of dog tags hanging around his neck, smiled tiredly at his father before dropping his bag to the ground. He easily caught his dad into a hug, standing at an impressive two-inch taller height than Shiro before pulling a surprised Shiro up into the air.

“Dad!” Keith laughed when Shiro gawked. “It’s so good to be home.” Shiro was surprised for only another second before scowling playfully at his son.

“What the hell are they feeding you there, where did my little child go?” He whined before ruffling Keith’s hair (which had finally grown back out to the familiar mullet he used to have). Keith chuckled and set his father on the ground, before the two embraced in a much tighter and more heartfelt hug. Lance and the others could feel their eyes beginning to grow misty as Keith and Shiro practically hung onto each other for several long minutes. All around them people were watching and smiling at the small display, sharing happy comments with one another, to which Keith and the rest of them ignored mainly.

Eventually, Keith and Shiro pulled back, both with wet eyes and bright smiles, as Shiro gently pat Keith on the back.

“I’m so happy you’re home. Shiro whispered before letting go of Keith’s hand.

“I missed you too dad.” The twenty-three-year-old grinned at his dad before turning to Lance and the others. Lance was the first to leap at Keith, jumping right into his arms (Ha, he was still taller than Keith and Shiro) and pressing a full-on kiss right onto Keith’s mouth. Keith blinked in surprise but caught Lance without a struggle and eventually melted into the kiss. The two lovers could hears some clapping and cheers all around them but ignored it in favor or holding on to each other for a few moment’s longer. Lance felt tears dripping down his face and he blushed in embarrassment, though to be fair it had been almost 13 months since he’d last seen his boyfriend in person.

Even Shiro was clapping from behind them. Looks like I’ve gotten dad’s approval after all. Hopefully he won’t try to kill me after today.

When Lance and Keith finally broke apart, Lance rest his forehead against Keith, looking into those beautiful blue eyes he’d memorized after nineteen years.

“Hey babe.” Lance grinned crookedly, drying his eyes while Keith snorted.

“That was quite a greeting Lance.” Keith huffed, but Lance could see the love and amusement in Keith’s eyes as he continued to hold Lance against him. Lance grinned.

“I’m all about the big show stopper babe. Go big or go home.” Lance winked before giving Keith another peck on the lips, who happily closed his eyes at the kiss, and hopped out of Keith’s arm. His heart was hammering like a drum in his chest and the small box in his pocket felt like a giant weight. Nervously he wiped his hands against his jeans.

“I’ve missed you. Kissing your sleeping face on a computer screen just doesn’t measure up to the real deal.” Lance joked, causing Keith to laugh in that adorable way where he sounded like he was too embarrassed to be laughing. It was laugh that always make Lance’s heart stop.

“I’ve missed you too.” Keith said sincerely and brushed some of Lance’s hair out of his eyes. Lance swallowed heavily and his fingers itched for the box in his pocket. This is the perfect moment. Do it now. “Except for when you hog all the blankets. I did not miss that.”

Okay, so maybe not now because that was rude.

Keith laughed at Lance’s pout and Shiro snickered from behind them. Rude.

“Hey don’t hog Keith! Let us say hello!” Pidge finally smacked Lance’s arm and shoved him aside just before Keith was attacked by Hunk and Pidge with everyone else hanging behind them. Keith laughed happily and accepted the hugs and high-fives from everyone. He gently gave Hunk a pat on the back when he started bawling in Keith’s arm. He accepted the manly hug from his grandpa and gave his grandma a kiss on the cheek. Keith accepted Allura’s scolding for making them all worry before hugging her and narrowly avoided a long-winded story about Coran’s time in his youth with young love. From the side, Lance watched this all with loving eyes finding himself falling more and more in love with this man, even after seven years of being together.

Do it now. Now it the perfect chance.

Lance nervously licked his lips, as his hands dug into his pocket. He thumbed the small box in his pocket and eyed Keith.

              Do it.

Lance gripped the box tightly with sweating fingers. Shiro glanced over.

              Do it.

As Lance pulled the box out from his pocket, his heart hammered heavily in his chest and Shiro’s eyes widened.

              DO IT.

“Eat food with me forever?!” Lance had suddenly shot out before Shiro could open his mouth, right in front of Keith (in front of everyone) before taking a knee and thrusting the small box unromantically towards Keith.

              The airport was dead silent.

Keith’s eyes were as wide as the moon and he stared at Lance with his mouth open. The silence etched on as Lance was frozen in horror. Did I just propose like an idiot?! He could hear Pidge and Allura trying to hide their snickers while Hunk was sobbing again. Still Keith said nothing and Lance’s heart shook.

“W-what?” He finally squeaked, and normally Lance would have teased the hell out of him for his tiny mouse voice but he probably was seconds away from passing out.

“Er, um, marry me?” Lance tried again before mentally slapping himself. How was that any more romantic than before? Keith blinked again.

“Is this a joke?” Keith’s face suddenly grew hot and a heavy blush spread over his cheeks. Lance thought it was adorable.

“No! Fuck, I bought a ring and everything see?!” Lance thrust the box back at Keith before realizing that the lid was closed. Oh. Quickly he opened the lid with shaking fingers and presented the ring to Keith.

“What the?” Keith gawked and stared at the silver band with intricate diamonds and stones that represented his birth month. He blinked again, this time feeling hot tears behind his eyes. The ring was stunning. It was hard, simple but it was beautiful too with stones that Keith always mentioned were pretty to Lance. He remembered. It wasn’t too masculine or too feminine. It was perfect.

              Keith was mortified.

“You idiot.” Keith sniffled before gripping Lance’s collar ad hauling him to his feet. Lance swallowed thickly, thinking he had somehow messed up. “You couldn’t wait until we were home?! Or when I wasn’t so tired, I could barely say my own name?!” Keith sniffled again and Lance frowned. Was that a yes?

“Er, are you gonna marry me or not? ‘Cause you’re not making much sense.” Lance laughed nervously and Keith rolled his eyes.

“That’s because it’s six in the fucking morning, and I got two hours of sleep.” Keith rolled his eyes with a snort. “And my stupid boyfriend thought it would be nice to propose to me, while I was dead on my feet, he was exhausted and hungry instead of during a nice quiet dinner or at home.”

“I can, uh, do it over again? If you want?”

“No, give me that goddamn ring. This is perfect.”

Lance blinked once. Twice. Three times before Keith finally pulled him in for a deep loving kiss. There was no battle for dominance, no tongue lashing or desperation. But rather it was full of love, passion and promises for their future.

The airport exploded with the sounds of screaming cheers, sobbing and clapping when Lance and Keith finally pulled away. Lance eagerly pulled off one of Keith’s glove before slipping the ring on his finger. A perfect fit.

Keith and Lance both stared at the ring, with goofy and tired smiles.

“I love you.” Keith whispered, eyes staring into Lance’s and Lance broke into a huge grin.

“I love you too.” The two broke apart when everyone else came rushing towards the newly engaged couple to give their congratulations. Keith happily accepted all hugs from everyone, while Lance did the same. Eventually, Lance felt a familiar metal hand grab his shoulder and his stomach dropped. He turned around to face Shiro, who wore an unreadable expression on his face.

“Shiro, sir, I know I should have asked for your hand in marriage and talked to you first –” Lance babbled nervously.

“You should have.” Shiro said and Lance swallowed. He was then pleasantly surprised when Shiro pulled him into a bone crushing hug. “Thank you for making him so happy. Welcome to the family, Lance and please take care of my son.” Shiro whispered into Lance’s ears and the tears were falling again on Lance’s face. He clutched at the back of Shiro’s jacket before burying his face into the shirt.

“Thank you Shiro. I promise to take care of him for the rest of our lives.”

              “Thank you.”

“I hope you don’t mind that I gave dad my dog tags.” Keith said when he and Lance were finally alone in their house. His eyes continuously wandered back to his ring every few minutes and Lance found that absolutely adorable. Keith might not be the most verbal about his appreciation but Lance wouldn’t be with him otherwise if that was the only reason he’d want to love him.

“Nah, I figured you were going to.” Lance admitted with a smile. He remembered that moment when Shiro and Keith started crying like babies. Shiro’s tags were still resting against Keith’s pale chest, full of new scars.

“I was always going to give them to him. It only felt right.” Keith said softly. “Even when we got together, I knew I was going to give them to him. After everything I put him through.”

“He loves them Keith. He loves you. Don’t worry about anything else.” Lance said quickly before Keith could go into a guilt-filled rant about his time in the military. Keith never regretted his decision but he’d seen how much it had hurt his friends and family. He often took it out on himself for their pain. “I love you, okay. Besides, you’ve given me a much better gift.” Keith frowned.

“You’re gonna be my husband.” Lance grinned and snaked an arm around Keith’s waist. Keith squeaked at the touch and playfully swatted at Lance’s arm. He snorted but allowed Lance to pull him close into another soft kiss.

“Mhm, yeah. I’m excited for our future. But Lance?”

              “Yeah babe?”

“There’s no way I’m going to be Keith McClain. You better get used to Lance Shirogane.”

Sentence prompts (VOLTRON) Prompt #4 (Klance)

Prompt from Anon

This was so much fun to write! Thank you for the prompt!

“When did you fall in love with him?” wide green eyes and a toothy smile, their daughter looked up at Lance and he melted a little.

“Your dad?” he asked.

“Yeah. When did you fall in love with Papa?” she inquired sweetly. Like all children, she had eventually grown a little more curious about her parents and often asked them about what they were like as kids- funny stories of their youths- how they met.

Leaning back into his chair, Lance scratched the back of his neck, “When did I fall in love with him?” he repeats the question, unsure of the answer himself. Honestly, it felt like it had just happened. Now that he was in love it was hard to recall a time when he wasn’t. It felt impossible to even imagine not being in love with Keith. “That is a good question, baby girl,” he brings her into his arms, smiling, “Let me think about that,” and think he did, but he couldn’t figure out an answer.

“Don’t you know?” she asks.

“Well, that is the funny thing about love- sometimes you don’t realize it is there, so it is hard to tell when it got there in the first place,” he says slowly.

“I know when,” arms, strong and familiar, wrapped around Lance’s shoulders, pulling him back a little. Feeling his husband nuzzled into his shoulder, Lance blinked wildly. “It was when aliens crashed down,”

“What?” Lance snorts. “When did that happen?”

Heyyy I'm sorry if you don't do these things but,,,, if you ever have time maybe could you write some more killugon with Ging involved?? Your writing it to good!!

No, its okay!!! I definitely do these things haha

I’m actually not too confident with my Ging but I tried my best ^^; I hope this is okay!

This is canon universe still, the boys are 18 here! This takes place a few days after the last part of this story. Previous parts of the ‘Gon and Killua deal with an intrusive Ging Freecss’ saga: one & two

It was supposed to be a peaceful evening, just him and Killua spending the night out exploring Whale Island like they used to when they were younger- just two kids with stars in their eyes and no understanding of things like spiders and ants and separations that left holes the size of canyons in the center of their chests.

Gon had wanted to go because there was going to be a meteor shower, and it was the first really clear night since they’d arrived here. Killua hadn’t said why he’d agreed to come along besides the undeniable fact that he would follow Gon everywhere and anywhere in the world.

But Gon knew the truth: Killua wanted to get away from Ging for a few hours. And Gon honestly didn’t blame him.

Ging wasn’t…as horrible as Gon had been worried he might be upon meeting Gon’s most important person. But he wasn’t exactly making the visit easy either with the snide remarks and suggestive commentary that left both Killua and Aunt Mito shrieking.

So a change of scenery and some distance would have done some good. If not for Ging somehow magically popping out of the underbrush behind Gon and Killua’s makeshift camp halfway through the night.

“Oh.” Ging straightened as Gon gaped at his father. “Ah. Its you two…”

“Oh, god,” Killua groaned and pressed the heels of his hands to his eyes. His head was currently resting in Gon’s lap, starlight hair pushed off his forehead in a way that was just begging Gon to play with the silky strands.

“Please,” Killua begged. “Please, Gon, tell me I’m hallucinating and that’s not your father over there.”

Gon winced. “I, uh, can’t tell you that, unless I’m hallucinating, too. And I don’t think I am.”

“Then push him off the cliff.”

Ging snorted. “I’m taking it I’m not exactly wanted here?”

“No shit!” Killua spat out and Gon curled his hands in Killua’s hair to keep him from hurling himself at Ging. “Leave! How the hell did you even find us?!”

“If you think you know Whale Island better than I do, you’ve got another thing coming, kid. This place isn’t exactly a secret.”

Then, to Gon’s shock, Ging began to make his way over to their campfire. Gon watched as the older man dropped gracelessly onto the cold ground opposite them, folding his arms and legs immediatley. The disgruntled expression on his face told Gon that Ging would rather be anywhere than here.

So, why was he?

“This is a good place for star gazing,” Ging said in the tense silence.

“…that’s why we came here,” Gon said awkwardly. Killua hadn’t moved an inch away from his current position- Killua was kind of weird in the sense that he wouldn’t get embarrassed around people that irritated him, like Ging- and his thin lips were pressed together tightly. It was obvious he wasn’t going to acknowledge Ging’s presence from here on out.

Gon wasn’t too upset by that. It meant he could keep running his fingers through Killua’s incredibly soft locks without Killua voicing a word of protest. He liked it best when Killua was like this: pliant, easy, subdued. And the pink hue on Killua’s cheeks was more than enough to fill Gon’s chest with a bursting warmth.

Ging didn’t comment on their current pose. Instead, he just said, “Did you know that I used to bring Mito up here?”

Gon blinked. “You did?”

Ging nodded. He squinted up at the sky, saying, “She used to make a big fuss about it, too. She didn’t like going out at night. But she always stopped complaining the second she saw the view.”

“Did you explore Whale Island a lot with Aunt Mito?” Gon asked as he continued to play with Killua’s hair. He could feel his friend slowly relaxing under his touch and Gon couldn’t help the gentle smile that tugged at his lips. Killua’s eyes were closed, so he couldn’t see the look on Gon’s face, but that was okay.

Just being with Killua again was enough. And the fact that they were dating- that Killua belonged to him, that Killua had still chosen Gon after everything that happened, that Killua loved him- made everything ten times better.

“Nah, not too much,” Gon heard Ging said distantly in the background. “She was younger than me. That made it hard for her to do some of the things I would go after. Plus, I was stronger so I went off on my own most of the time. Still, she was pretty upset when I left.”

“Well, duh,” Killua spoke up suddenly, startling the other two. “Saying goodbye to someone you care about is never easy. How did you think she’d react?!”

Ging leaned back on his hands. “I never thought much about it, to be honest.”

“How could you not think about that?!” Killua snapped and Gon’s heart twisted. He knew what goodbye Killua was thinking about, and it wasn’t Ging’s departure with Aunt Mito.

“I just didn’t,” Ging said flatly. “I don’t think about stuff like that. I have myself and what I want to do in life; Mito has her own life, too. We’re different people with different priorities. That doesn’t mean I never thought about her, though.”

Killua seethed quietly. He looked like he was about to say more but Gon pressed his hand over Killua’s fist before he could open his mouth.

Blue eyes met brown. Gon shook his head slightly and Killua deflated with an annoyed huff.

“You’re crazy,” Killua said to Ging. “You do know that, right?”

“If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t be a Freecss,” Ging shot back.

Gon laughed out loud at that as Killua scowled. Trust Ging to be brutally honest.

They spent the rest of the night like that, exchanging banter and random facts about their lives. Ging told them several stories of his and Mito’s adventures while Killua complained about some inconveniences during his travels with Alluka around the world. Gon didn’t say much for the most part. He simply listened to the grin in Killua’s voice, the obnoxious lilt in Ging’s, and kept brushing his hands through Killua’s fluffy locks.

He didn’t remember falling asleep. But when he woke up, eyes bleary from hours-long rest and muscles sore from sitting up all night, Ging was gone.

“Where did he go?” Gon asked as Killua crouched next to the spot where Ging had sat just hours earlier.

“Dunno…oh, wait. There’s a note.”

Gon lurched to his feet and scrambled over to Killua.

Together, they read the words written in scrawly handwriting:

Its been fun. See you two soon.

“There’s no signature,” Gon said.

“Well its not like there’s any doubt who left it, you know?” Killua stretched his arms over his head with a yawn. Gon had to tear his gaze away from the tiny strip of white skin that appeared above Killua’s waistband as Killua’s shirt rode up. “And its Ging we’re talking about, here. Out of all the crap he’s pulled, leaving Whale Island in the middle of the night isn’t the weirdest.”

Gon grinned, cheeks warm from his blush. “True. Last night was fun, though.”

Killua shrugged but Gon could still see the hidden smile in the corner of his mouth. “I guess it wasn’t too bad.”

Happiness bubbled up inside of Gon. He was glad. Killua hadn’t hated Ging in the end, and Ging hadn’t hated Killua. Not that it would’ve mattered much, because he wasn’t going to part from Killua’s side any time soon, but still. It was nice to know that his whole family knew each other now.

“Ready to head back?” Gon asked and held out his hand.

Killua’s eyes softened. He wrapped his fingers around Gon’s and squeezed them lightly.

“Yeah. Let’s go. Maybe your aunt will have lunch made by the time we get back.”

And off they went.

The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree

(AU where Jack and Bitty basically have a meme son and Kent basically adopts a more awkward version of Dex)

Max Bittle Zimmermann is infuriating most of the time. He never seems to get nervous, angry, sad, and always has a stupid smirk on his face. It’s like nothing fazes him into a state of panic. Nothing fazes him into a state of anything. People always say that the only reason he has made it to the NHL is because of the Zimmermann legacy. When the press brings it up, Max doesn’t even show any signs of anger. His famous line, “My Papa was alright, I guess. It’s all relative.” has grown so popular its become a meme. A picture of Jack Zimmermann’s several Stanley Cup wins with the caption: “My Papa was alright, I guess.” He’s the spitting image of Eric Bittle, except for the fact he’s very tall. He’s known as the pretty boy of the NHL and not a lot of people take him seriously. Sometimes that’s warranted, though. Like the famous incident of Max Zimmermann throwing up in the Stanley Cup, because he was hungover from the night before. The most shocking part about that whole situation was that he played like his normal prodigy self.

Grant Parson is a spaz. An intense spaz that worries about everything. When Grant was a first round pick and went straight to Max’s team, it nearly sent him into an epileptic fit. It was just so ironic, Grant couldn’t deal with it. He also grew up with the guy, and Grant knew that Max loved hockey for sure, but it wasn’t his life. It was Grant’s life, though. Max always made fun of Grant’s red hair and said to him on multiple occasions, “You have so many fucking freckles man, like what the fuck is that?”

What is This Feeling part 4

For a good chunk of class neither of the two spoke. They cleared their throat and shuffled papers, but they didn’t look or speak to the other. Jason, Piper, Cecil, and Lou Ellen all noticed something was wrong. There was no bickering coming from their corner of the room, no frustrated growls and snide comments. They were just sitting there, quiet, still, faces hidden. They didn’t have a clue as to what could have happened. Had an argument finally gone too far?

“Uh, listen,” Will tried after a while of turning the words over and over in his head. “About-”

“Don’t,” Nico said, his voice void of emotion, but still harsh. He didn’t elaborate but Will got the idea.

He sighed and slumped in his seat. “Okay, well how do we finish this if we don’t talk?”

“We can talk. Just not about that.” Will rolled his eyes and drummed his fingers on the table. “Stop that,” Nico muttered. Will raised an eyebrow, but considering Nico hadn’t even looked at him, he decided to ignore him. He drummed his fingers a little louder against the desk and watched as Nico’s muscles tensed.

Suddenly a hand was over his, putting incredible strength to stop his fingers. Nico recoiled and his hands went into his hair, still trying to avoid looking at Will. The bell rang for dismissal and Will hovered by his desk. “Well, are we still working on it after school?” he mumbled.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” he answered, collecting his things. “I’ll uh, text you if anything.” He started leaving and Will groaned, agitate beyond belief.

He followed Nico and snatched the strap of his backpack to pull him back. Most kids kept walking, some gave them a look. A few gave surprised gasps and began to whisper. Was Will Solace about to get into a fight with Nico di Angelo? Will Solace, the friendliest boy in school?

Rage prickled along his skin at the way Nico could bring out the worst in him. The way that no matter how hard he tried to be nice, he always ended up in an argument with him. He caught the looks from the people around him and without even looking at Nico’s furious expression, he tugged him down toward the bus ramp exit. “What the hell are you doing?” Nico snapped, yanking away.

“What are you doing?” he asked angrily. “For crying out loud, Nico! We’re almost done with this thing, what does it matter what happened yesterday? You don’t have to act like we- like we-”

“Like we what?” he snarled. “Kissed? Because we did, Solace.”

Will sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Okay, yeah. Whatever. I mean…. Nico, we can pretend it didn’t happen. I know you’re not into guys or-”

“Oh for crying out loud!” he snapped. “I don’t care that you’re a guy! My dad is too drunk to give a damn about who I kiss on my spare time and I don’t really care what people at school think.”

Taking a step back and blinking in confusion Will tried to for a thought. He looked at Nico, sullen and angry, finally looking him in the eyes. “Then… what’s the big deal?” he asked dumbly.

“That it’s you!” he yelled, throwing his arms up in frustration. “I don’t like you! You annoy the hell out of me! You with your preppy clothes and happy smile and friendliness! Everyone likes you! You’re this happy, caring guy that’s nice to everyone and nobody ever says anything bad about you. My God, and it’s annoying! You’re this freaking goody two shoes and you kiss me? I’m your complete opposite and- and-” He looked at Will with his big brown eyes, his hair falling in front of them, making him look stressed and even afraid.

His words died in his throat. He didn’t even know where he was going with that rant. And with Will looking at him with those crystal blue eyes, determined and confused. His lips were parted in surprise at Nico’s lashes, waiting for him to finish.

“Oh, fuck it,” Nico muttered. He pulled him by his collar and pressed his lips against him again, this time kissing him fervidly, desperately. The feelings churning in him didn’t make any sense. He despised this sandy haired perfect golden boy, but at the same time his heart leapt when he saw him, his stomach burst with butterflies when they argued and got so close, he could feel his hot breaths against his face. And every feeling was emphasized when he felt Will kiss him back.

His hands rested on his hips, his fingers dug into his skin, and Nico hated him for making him feel anything besides pure hatred for him. Nico let his hands slide into his hair again, pressed him closer.

When he broke away, he stared into his eyes, which seemed to struggle to focus. “Whoa,” he muttered. “Yeah, I can see how much you hate me,” he said, beginning to smirk.

“Shut up,” Nico said hitting his arm. He was dizzy and warm and he didn’t want to pull away from his arms. “What the hell did you do to me?” he whispered.

Will didn’t answer. He just slid his hand up to Nico’s cheek and tilted his face up to him. “What does this mean? You’re telling me you don’t like me, then you’re kissing me.”

“I don’t know,” he answered, furrowing his eyebrows. “You do annoy me. But you’re the only person who ever stands up to me. You’re the only one who knows about the way my dad gets. You’re the only one that reminds me I can feel anything.”

“I mean if it’s worth anything, you annoy me too.” Surprisingly, Nico laughed. Will smiled and leaned down to kiss him softly this time.

“How many people do you think we’ll surprise?” Nico snorted. Piper had called it long before, and so had Jason. Their ideas had seemed absurd. How could Nico, who was so cold and unamicable, ever feel anything for the blond teenager on the other side of the room who would meet his glare with one of his own?

“Mm, anyone not close to us?” he suggested. “Cecil had suggested it before. But I didn’t take him serious.” He smiled his sunny smile and tilted his head. “So are you coming to my house?”

“Are we actually going to work on that project?” Will shrugged. “Alright,” he laughed.

They sent their time in Will’s room, laying on the floor, staring at the ceiling. Will asked him questions and for the first time, Nico spoke up. He told him about his sister. He told him about the way his stepmother had left and how it had destroyed his father. He told him how badly he wanted to leave and how scared he was to feel anything for anyone.

Will told him about his yearlong attempt to get a higher grade than Nico and his frustration at how hard he had to try while also trying to raise himself at home. He told Nico about his original impression of him, how he had believed that Nico’s stoic expression was just a sign of his control over anyone who was near.

They’d kissed again and again, settling into a certain manner of kissing they both liked. They found new ways to annoy each other and weaknesses like certain tickle spots or touches that made the other’s pupils dilate.

The next day at school, Nico and Will walked together most of the day. A few people caught glances of them holding hands, but only for a second. Then again, it could have been their imagination. There was no way it could have been real. Everyone knew how much those two hated each other.

Nico wasn’t very expressive with Will when there were other people around. He spoke softly and traced patterns on his hand when no one was looking, but that was it. Other than that, there wasn’t much of a change in the way they were with each other. They still managed to bicker over little things, driving each other crazy. Their time separated from each other proved necessary with the way they constantly butted heads.

When they were in their last class, Nico was flipping through papers and Will had taken the liberty of throwing his legs over Nico’s lap. “Here’s the rubric, Neeks.”

“Neeks?” he questioned, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “That’s cute.” Will winked and took the papers from him. “Hey, I was checking something.”

“You’re too slow. Here, you check it off as I name it.” Nico grumbled but let Will name off each paper.

“We’re good,” Nico said. “Good job, partner.” He high fived him and went to put the papers in the bin. He gave the teacher their poster and sat back down next to Will. “I can still go over to your place, right?” Nico asked.

“Yeah,” Will laughed. He took his hand and Nico tensed, looking at their interlocked hands in confusion before relaxing. “You okay?”

“Yeah,” he said. “I’m fine.” He smiled and leaned against him.

“Wait, when did that happen?” someone called. People started looking at them and they both froze. “Called it!” Piper yelled.

“Shut up,” Nico said, covering his face. “Do your work!” Will chuckled and Nico could feel the deep vibrations under him. Cecil and Lou Ellen and Jason and Piper reseated themselves by them and began asking questions. Nico let Will answer, feeling too stressed by the excessive attention to say anything.

In his head he wondered how this would work. How long would it last? Nico didn’t know how to be a boyfriend. He didn’t know how to be affectionate. Especially with Will. He did such a good job at pissing Nico off, he didn’t know how these feelings had surfaced. But they had and they were strong. So strong, it got Nico to talk openly with him and agree to the term “boyfriend.”

But he had no idea what it entailed.

Title: Deck The Halls, Bitches | Part One: A Dominatrix for Christmas

Rated: T for trouble (and mild adult situations and language)

Summary:  One week before Christmas and Lucy realizes she has a problem. In her frustration, she may or may not have told her entire extended family she was bringing a date to Christmas. She lied. Cana’s solution? A Craigslist Ad posted by one Natsu Dragneel. Too much whiskey, crazy family members, and a multitude of awkward situations only serve as obstacles. There will be casualties.

Word Count: 7728

It’s a slow night at the Iron Dragon—which is ironic given the impending holidays. Usually there are more people looking to get wasted before having to visit the relatives and braving snowstorms. Or maybe that’s just Lucy—and Gajeel and Lucy are busy wiping down the counter as the clock ticks passed midnight. Well, Gajeel is wiping down the counter. Lucy is sitting on the bar and chatting with Cana and “shirking her responsibilities” says Gajeel.

Lucy rolls her eyes and tosses her right leg over the left, blatantly ignoring her grumbling coworker and continuing to chat with her tipsy friend on the other side of the bar. Cana’s the only one left here anyway, so it’s not that big of a deal. A slight health code violation, maybe, but unless Cana’s been lying to her for three years and is secretly a health inspector, Lucy doesn’t think there’s anything to worry about.

“So what are you doin’ over the holidays?” Cana slurs, wobbling slightly as she leans back on the legs of her stool. Cana’s eyes narrow in concentration as she takes another shot of vodka, her tongue poking out slightly as she tries to balance on the back two legs.

Wrinkling her nose, Lucy’s lips turn into a frown and she sighs, glaring half-heartedly down at the rag next to her thigh. Her gaze shifts back to Cana, who’s looking at her expectantly while still trying to maintain her balance and not face plant onto the bar. Lucy groans. “Please don’t remind me of break,” she pleads. “I tried to schedule work over Christmas, but Gajeel’s dad wouldn’t let me.” Lucy supposes she’s a little bit ungrateful that she actually has the holidays off work. There are plenty of people who would love to go home and visit their families and take a much needed break.

Lucy is not one of these people. She’d rather be stabbed in the leg than go home for Christmas this year, because a) her family is absolutely bonkers, b) someone is probably going to wind up in the hospital like every other year, and c) she doesn’t have a date. That last one wouldn’t be a problem, except she’s kind of spent the last six months telling everyone she was seeing someone, if only to get her dad off her back.

Fat lot of luck that turned out to be. She’d completely forgotten about that white lie until her father called her in the middle of a shift and Lucy kind of, maybe, accidentally promised that her nonexistent date would be coming home for Christmas. Oops.

Behind her, Gajeel mumbles something unintelligible, but before Lucy can politely demand that he not mumble, Cana lets out an indignant squawk. The bar stool slams back onto all four legs and Cana’s palms slap down on the bar on either side of Lucy’s legs.

“What do you mean you tried to schedule shifts over break,” Cana demands more so than asks. “Are you telling me you want to continue working twelve hour nights shifts during the most hellish time of the year?” Cana looks about ready to leap across the bar and throttle her—which wouldn’t be impossible. Cana’s a very coordinated drunk. Though that probably isn’t something to brag about.

“Of course I don’t,” Lucy huffs, crossing her arms and sending Cana a nasty look, which the brunette promptly ignores. “I would love to take time off. I just don’t want to go home for Christmas.” And scheduling shifts at that time was the only way to get out of doing so. Unfortunately, Gajeel’s dad had to be a nice person and give her time off. Bummer.

Cana looks at her like she’s just sprouted a second head. “Why the hell not?” Cana snaps, eyes narrowing in confusion. She mirrors Lucy’s position, crossing her arms over her chest and glaring.

Lucy huffs, eyes rolling as she slips her legs underneath her to sit cross-legged. She really doesn’t feel the need to explain herself to Cana. They’re friends and all, but Lucy thought they were passed the questioning stage. Then again, it’s probably only fair that Lucy share her family story, since Cana did tell her about the whole Gildarts thing.

She sighs, relenting, and Cana leans forward expectantly. “I don’t want to go home because half of my family is batshit insane and the other half has a stick up their ass,” she says simply, wincing at the onslaught of horrors from Christmas past. Behind her, Gajeel snorts loudly, so Lucy lifts the rag at her side and whips it at him blindly, smirking when she hits her mark.

Cana isn’t as impressed. “And?” she prompts, waving her hands slightly and dragging out the word ever so slowly.

“And what?” Lucy questions, shrugging slightly. That’s all there is to it really. Bad things happen at Christmas when both sides of her family collide. It’s not so bad when they’re kept apart, but when the Heartfilia and Dreyer sides of the family mix all Hell breaks loose and usually there’s fire involved.

To this day, she still finds glitter around her apartment from the Christmas disaster of twenty-eleven.

And this year is going to be the worst one yet, because her Grandfather Makarov, bless him, not only decided to invite the entire family to his home, but also included a plus one in the invitation. As such, everyone and their mother will be bringing a date.
