The Changes You Can't See - a MikaYuu drabble

Yuu feels a little stupid he’s never noticed: Mika can’t sleep.

Naturally, he’d assume Mika would lay down in his room at night, because that’s what you do… when you’re human.

“You seriously never noticed?” Mika watches him incredulously.

Yuu scratches the back of his head, embarrassed. “I never paid it much attention…”

That’s a pretty Yuu thing to do, Mika must decide. He takes the explanation without much more of a fight, sighing a little.

Yuu can hear the ‘incredible" in that tiny puff of air.

He steps next to Mika, leaning against the shabby house wall, and looks out the starry night sky like Mika does. “How does it feel not being able to sleep?” Yuu asks in innocent curiosity.

Mika doesn’t answer. Yuu can feel him becoming stiff.

“… Not human,” He spits the words reluctantly.

Yuu huffs. The answer doesn’t please him, and silence is all that passes between them for a moment.

He thinks it must be lonely… to stand out here every night on his own– like the nights when Yuu would cry as a child. So loudly, apparently, that a soldier would snitch him to Guren and make him check on Yuu.

He wonders, did Mika cry too? Did he cry alone in a room, not getting the image of his family dying out of his head?

Did he have a Guren who came to check on him? Someone who stayed until he fell asleep?

“I can’t sleep,” Yuu lies, the words coming out of nowhere.

He turns to look at Mika, his face as innocent as ever. “Will you stay with me?”

Mika’s eyes grow wide. “You want me to stay with you in your room?”

“I want you to stay with me in my bed.”

Mika blushes. Even in the lacking light, Yuu can see it - feel it - more likely.

He lifts his hand to touch Mika’s cheek, the skin hot, stroking over his cheekbone with his thumb. “Will you?”

Mika glances to the side.

“I guess.”

You’d think it’d be awkward to share a bed, but somehow… both seem to know exactly what to do.

Yuu faces the wall, laying on his side, and Mika casually places an arm around him from behind.

“This feels like something we’d do as children…” Mika mumbles, his voice full of warmth. He’s so close, his breath spills into Yuu’s hair, disturbing it.

Mika adds, “When you were still a crybaby.”

“I wasn’t a crybaby,” Yuu grumbles in protest. The tips of his ears feel hot.

“You were. You’d think I didn’t see with your back turned to me, but I did.”

Yuu grows silent. His brain is slowly connecting the puzzle pieces. “… Is that why you’d come lie next to me?”

There’s a smile in Mika’s voice.

Yuu’s ears grow hotter, and Mika presses a kiss to the back of Yuu’s head.

They don’t say anything for a while. There’s only the sound of them breathing and the beat of their hearts.

“Thank you,” Yuu mumbles eventually.

Mika’s presence always had something soothing. It felt like he wanted to be around Yuu, and Yuu wanted the same. It’s almost like they sought comfort in each other - back then - as they do now.

Mika mumbles back, “I have to thank /you./”

He shuffles closer, holding Yuu a little tighter, like he’s preparing himself to join Yuu in sleep.

Yuu forgets quickly that it’s something that Mika can’t do.

And never will.

Hello! I'm a huge fan of you art and comics, and I really like the figure drawing stuff you've been posting recently. I was wondering if you have a specific method for laying out the gesture for a pose and the proportions at the very beginning of a drawing. I find myself struggling a lot with making sure I have a cool gesture without just losing my anatomy entirely and vice versa and you do a really awesome job at keeping both of those in there! If you have time to share I'd appreciate it!

Hello! Thanks for writing :)

I try to keep the gesture as simple and dynamic as possible, and build the structure and proportions off of it. It took A LOT of trial and error to get to a place where I feel fairly confident in my studies, but I still mess up proportions pretty often and don’t push the gesture enough. When that happens I scrap the drawing, start over, or move on to the next pose.

When I’m working with pen (like the Bodies in Motion studies) it’s a bit different. I don’t want to muddy up the drawing with construction lines, so I do the “gesture drawing” in my head, and go straight for the final line. I still mess ‘em up and have to start over every now and then, but it’s the persistence of doing it almost every day that’s helped me improve.

I’ve attached a couple links to good tips and tutorials for figure drawing, but the biggest thing is observation and persistency. I’ve been taking life drawing classes for almost 15 years, and it’s only in the last few years I feel things have finally clicked. If I were to measure a pile of bad drawings vs successful drawings, the bad pile is astronomically bigger (think fridge height vs. city skyscraper). The biggest thing is to KEEP AT IT!!!

your "where would got7 like to be kissed" post had me giggling like a flustered schoolgirl, i s2g. thank you so much for doing it! the request i have slightly different, though. could you please do where would got7 like to kiss you the most? i know your blog doesn't mainly do got7, but i was just hoping you could make an exception for this request. if you can't, though, i'd completely understand!

sure i can, never ever has been on repeat for me the last couple of days!!
find the where would got7 like to be kissed ver (here)

JB would like kissing your neck the most. It’s a sensual place to begin with, but also he’d like having your hands in his hair and being close enough to hear your voice shake when he grazes his teeth over your skin.

Jinyoung has a natural need to care for others, it doesn’t go away with his significant other, it’s just much softer than it is with his friends. He’d love giving you kisses on the forehead, whether it’s a goodbye kiss as he drops you off at home or a kiss when you’re cuddled up against his arm on the couch, the both of you reading your favorite books side by side.

Jackson loves kissing your thighs, literally don’t argue with me on this. While it is true that Jackson loves kissing you everywhere because he can’t keep his hands to himself around you, he’d love having his head on your lap, turning it and kissing your thigh playfully or you know, when he’s in between your leg and kissing it not so playfully,,,,,,,you get my drift.

Mark is a tease, but like a soft tease so he loves trailing kisses from your wrist up your arm. Treating you delicately, like royalty and then stopping right at the dip of your collar to look up and smile at you. He’d also hold your hand and bring it up so he could kiss your palm aimlessly while you two are out on dates.

Youngjae likes to cuddle and can be a shy boy from time to time so I feel like his ideal is to spoon you from behind and give your back little kisses as he pulls you closer into his arms, but can also hide his face from you in case he feels embarrassed. It’s cute, and  the kisses tickle if your shirt is hanging low or there’s no shirt at all, but it makes Youngjae feel more intimate and happy.

Bambam likes to make out with you. I’m not going to hide it or sugarcoat it, he likes your lips and gets into the habit of staring at them in public and you’ve got to literally snap him out of it. But seriously, this boy will give just about any excuse to lean in and start kissing you, quick pecks and teasing half-kisses that turn into a lot more unless Jinyoung is there to pull you two apart.

Yugyeom is the kind of boyfriend that hugs you from behind and rests his chin in your hair so he’s always giving the top of your head kisses. Like you bend your neck back to look up at him and he’ll lean in to kiss you, but since that’s work you just keep doing whatever it is you’re doing and Yugyeom kisses your hair and plays with it until you have time to give him attention.

Basic income sounds so amazing. I work parttime and where I live it's just enough to pay my rent and bills (split with my boyfriend), buy food and have some fun. We live in a place where rent is cheap, don't own a car and don't feel like we need much, but guess what? If someone came up to me tomorrow and said I could get a basic income every month, I'd still go to work. Because that would be something extra, something I can save or spend on nice things instead of budgeting everything.

This is what study after study has shown, too. All basic income does is take the existential fear of where the next meal is coming from out of the picture for low income people.

Could you explain how to do lighting in landscapes?? I'm thinking specifically of how the heck they do it in Steven Universe. They have beautiful artwork and I'd love to be able to achieve that sort of lighting. Thanks!

Ah well lighting in animation backgrounds are done with the express purpose of guiding the eye to where the animation is going to take place - think of it like setting up spot lighting on a stage!

In fact, in a lot of cases the su team do literally set things up with what are essentially spotlights

Note that all of the characters are in areas where the light is shining. This is done because your eyes are drawn to the areas with the highest contrast, so your eyes jump to the spotlights - and by extension, the characters!

Now if i show you some backgrounds without the characters, can you guess where abouts the characters are on the stage?

Now the thing to understand about the lighting in these backgrounds is that there are some rules and guidelines that inform the colour choices and value ranges.

Scenery is divided into planes, the Foreground, Background, and the Middleground which is generally where the characters are staged.

In outdoor scenery there is also often Deep Space, which is things waaay off in the distance like mountains.

Take a look at this background for example:

This background has all of the different planes, you can flatten them each down into a solid colour

as i mention in the key there, the foreground is generally in contrast to the background and deep space.

If the background is full of cold blues and purples, the foreground is going to be warmer colours like browns and greens.

It’s also going to be on the opposite end of the value range - deep space is usually pale in colour and uses the higher end of the value range, whilst the foreground is usually darker and uses the lower end of the value range.

the colour of the sky is very important to the rest of the colour scheme!
this is because of aerial perspective. It’s a simple enough concept, but it does need a little explaining

This is easiest to understand if you think of a really foggy day - you know how things get really hazy the further out in the fog they get?

This happens on regular days too! It’s just that it needs to be super far away for it to be noticeable.

So, basically, the further away something gets, the less contrast there will be and the colour will become closer to that of the sky.

The reason for this is because of the water in the atmosphere - the sun shines on it and it reflects the colour of the sky, which is particularly noticeable on foggy days due to there being so much water.

most of the time, this means that things in the distance will turn bluer, due to the sky normally being blue.

However! SU regularly takes place at different times of day, so you can see how the colour of the sky and how bright it is changes the aerial perspective

as for actually setting up the lighting, there are some simple rules to follow.

the area of highest contrast is where the viewer is going to look. To understand this better, look at the backgrounds in black and white only:

Your eyes are drawn to Beach Citywalk Fries because there is a stark contrast between the shadows and the spotlight!

It has the highest range of values going all the way through from black to white in the middleground.

The areas your eyes are not drawn to, however, only have a small range of values. The foreground goes from dark grey to black, and the background goes from light grey to white.

Generally, the foreground will be darker than the middleground, and the background will be lighter, whilst the middleground will have a full range of values.

I say generally as this is not always the case, there are lighting situations where the background will be the darkest part of the image

but they’re pretty unusual!

so in summary:

- figure out where you want the viewer to look, that should be the area of highest contrast. That means that there should be strong shadows and strong highlights.

- make use of aerial perspective to add depth to your scenery, the further away something is the less contrast it should have.

- Set your scenes up with the planes in mind, use the most values in the middleground and use opposite values for the foreground and background.

And also, you might want to check out kevindart, ducksofrubber, and ellemichalka,  because they’re the art directors for steven universe! i also believe amandawinterstein and rickycometa are background painters c:

Can you tell us about the heavy demilitarized zone? I'd like to know how you explain it :D

An excellent question.

The demilitarized zone, or DMZ, is the zone 2 kilometers wide on each side of the military demarcation line, which is the true border, as it marks where the front line was when the armistice was signed.

“Demilitarized” is probably not the best term, since the no-man’s land between is littered with landmines and South and I both have military patrols out 24/7. It has also been the place of several…incidents…since the armistice. Most of them involved gunfire. One involved an ax. America started that one. This is where I spend most of my time.

You may have seen pictures of this place. It’s called the Joint Security Area, but I know it as Panmunjom, since that was the name of the village that used to stand here.

The blue huts straddling the border are where any and all negotiations and meetings take place. Tourists on both sides are allowed to enter (never at the same time, of course). If you visit from South’s side, you’re not allowed to touch anything. But if you visit from my side, you can sit at the tables. Please sit at the tables. And touch things. And move them around. And leave them that way so South has to clean it up later…

These buildings are the only place South and I ever talk to each other, barring the occasional World Conference.

And, I suppose, a few words every once in a while when we are standing guard outside, face to face.

I hate having to see his face.

Slytherins (x) are those people who don’t mind fog, they are the feel of salt on your lips and touch of rain on your cheeks. They are the touch of leaves on your fingers when you strove through the woods. They are mist and need of exploring. They are like water: strong, independent, always able to change their form, shape, just like their element. They are the smell of old books which are full of secrets. Reading is for them yet another adventure. They crave knowledge and are keen students but not for the wisdom itself but because they know well how to use it, to achieve their ends. They are the elegant places, classy and gloomy, where you both feel amazed and stunned while at the same time being bit afraid, feeling respect to something that curious. They are mystery, adaptability, adventures all at once, to eventually achieve what they want.

alex wears something like this

without the longass train because my girl is still Practical

this is the palette for the wedding colors (alex picked and maggie wants to make alex happy)

their venue is something small intimate and and outdoor and garden-like, like this

alex walks down the aisle first and escorted by j’onn. she cries when maggie walks down the aisle (escorted by james)

Former The Mouse Baby Center CM again. That place is where lost children would get brought. There were so many parents I'd manage to contact and they were like "yeah, we'll be there after the fireworks." No. This isn't a daycare. We sell baby products and give families a place to rest together. Then there were those who'd show up to get their kids screaming at them for wondering off. How did they get that far without you noticing? They're just kids. Calm down.

Hey- I live ~45 min from Vassar college (&work even closer) I have no idea how one "checks the records" but if you want me to go look & see if she was valedictorian I'd be happy to do so

Aw, thank you! That’s not necessary, but it’s very sweet of you to offer.

Honestly - and this is where I diverge from outlets like @missedinhistory or @askhistorians - this is an example of a place where, to me, that point is not overly important. Let me explain:

RP is me trying to illustrate, with words and pictures, a historical (or occasionally mythical) tale. I am not trying to provide the official record. That’s much better left to the precision of historians, of people who cross all Ts and dot all Is.

My goal is to tell a story, and to make a case that said story should be remembered and celebrated. I know I’m not going to get every detail right. I tried to do so for about two years and drove myself crazy in the process.

In the context of storytelling, saying Sutematsu was valedictorian is shorthand for “she was a very good student” - that’s the information being conveyed. I can just as easily reword to say she got to speak in front of her class at graduation and the same point is conveyed. Whether she was the smartest is largely irrelevant to the point I’m trying to make.

It’s like playing a piece of music and one note is just slightly off, to the point where only a handful of people can pick up on it. It’s like getting someone’s eye color or dominant hand wrong - unless it’s at the crux of their story, I’m sorry to say it’s not getting my full attention. I’ve got too much music to play and I need to keep going.

I understand and respect those details are important to some, and I’m super glad said people exist. They write amazing books with amazing insight, and I attempt to do their work (and their subjects) justice with my summaries and illustrations. It is entirely understandable that said population would care so much and look over my work with such a fine-tooth comb.

Where I take issue is when that level of note-perfect precision is demanded of everyone who’d engage with the material. It is entirely understandable that historians would take umbrage at inaccuracies. Hell, I get furious at bullshit like Braveheart or 300: Rise of an Empire. I even get that some historians can take one or two off notes as grounds to dismiss my entire body of work. I find it a harsh conclusion, but that’s their informed prerogative.

My frustration lies in instances where a historian will declare, to people who cannot themselves hear the off notes, that my work is atonal and worthless - and that by virtue of their training, this conclusion is the only worthwhile one. That getting a minor point wrong puts me on the same footing as Disney’s Pocahontas

To me, it’s a derivation of the Internet’s favorite game, Perfect or Hitler - it’s the game where you’re perfect…. or you’re Hitler. It’s the game where everyone loses.

Anyways, that’s my take on it. Your mileage may vary, and that’s okay. I’m doing my best and that’s all I can do.

Would you be ok with writing some Makoto/Akira headcanons? They're one of my fave couples and I'd like to see them done by one of my fave authors <3

One of your favourite author? you flatter me , but thank you

- The relationship between Makoto and Akira is a sweet one , with both parties both having calmer demeanours. Their relationship is just like the sea; slow , steady and relaxing.

- The couple’s enjoyed dating location would be quiet places like the library , a park or a café , where the two would spend quiet time together , resting on each other’s shoulders.

- Akira thinks that Makoto’s little braided headband is absolutely charming. He enjoys running his fingers over the headband and will constantly compliment her on her cute sense of style.

-  There is a strong bond of trust between the two , where Akira feels comfortable to tell Makoto about his troubles due to her motherly figure. He feels protected under her warmth , and it is likewise for Makoto too.

- During thundery nights , Akira would call Makoto to check up on her , to ask if she was feeling alright ( due to her phobia of dark/thunder ). He would go right over to her place to help her fall asleep if needed ,

- You can really tell that the two are completely in love with the other. From gushing comments to the little actions that they do for one another ( Worrying about their health constantly , Akira sewing a little buchimaru plushies for her.) And if you were to ever bring that up , both parties would be a blushing mess.
