this is a gifset that i wanted to make since the end of the season

anonymous asked:

ur post about fic & racism in the supergirl fandom really got me thinking (especially about my own biases so thank you) but also like, how there’s this incredibly pervasive but subtle new form of racism I haven’t seen b4 in other fandoms? Like on one hand u have this loud condemnation of how racist monel is & how he was a slave owner blabh blah but no corresponding attention given to the existing Black characters. 1/4

I get wlw not wanting to write m/f fic but a lot of the fandom doesn’t reblog (or make) any of the gifsets, they don’t meta for him they don’t call for more screen time for Mehcad. Same for M’gann. SO many posts talking about how awful monel is compare him to Lena and strangely don’t mention the Black female character who also came from an oppressive society to become a hero? And there are like, idk, 4 people? Who write or post wlw fic with M’gann in it? 2/4

Same with Maggie. A huge segment of fandom decided Floriana is white (even tho hollywood clearly won’t cast her in roles for white women) so they use that as an excuse to exclusively stan the very light skinned white wlw. And the way it carries over to the characters, like, okay Flo is white? but Maggie is absolutely treated like a woc in how parts of fandom aggressively ignore her & find ways to demonize her character while overtly supporting lighter skinned characters ¾

And that same part of the fandom doesn’t ever seem to create content for Lucy or Vasquez either. IDK this isn’t something u can probably explore with stats but ur post really got me thinking and it just feels really gross now bc I see all these posts condemning racism but there’s still this extreme perpetuation of privileging white characters at the same time? & I haven’t seen this particular trend in fandom b4 4/4

Oh, anon, this made my day. I have a bunch of notes waiting in a doc to address the whole Mon-El thing with regard to the racist undertones and the rhetoric used by the show to frame his storyline, and I will do my best to write it before the season comes back again, because I genuinely think they tried to aim high and just … missed completely. (But I make no promises because my thesis defense is on Tuesday.)

To your first point re: fandom attitudes – I was surprised in the early half of S2 when so many people came out of the woodwork making posts in the main tag like “wait, why did they get rid of Kara/James??” because, oh right, nobody acted like they cared for almost twelve straight months. If y’all were so okay with this ship, where were you to acknowledge its social significance when it was canon? Where are you now? Why hasn’t there been an outpouring of tweets week after week at the execs and the writers for sidelining an interracial couple in favor of what we’re getting, especially since the storyline literally handwaved away human trafficking and slavery as minor plot points?

Not only that, when there’s unrealized potential for a non-canon ship there is typically an outpouring of fic in response, and while there’s been a statistically significant amount of new Karolsen fic in S2 because it’s pretty easy to top zero percent, the writing there is not keeping pace with any of the other dude-involved pairings.

And you’re right, anon: it is not possible to prove anything with stats. HOWEVER, thanks to the addition of these new characters for S2, I *am* at the point now where it’s possible to see correlation between character race and fan engagement with different pairing choices. And the bias is there, whether it’s in the het pairings, the femslash, or even the m/m pairings. The whole reason I started tracking fic outputs in the first place was that any attempt to have this conversation last year devolved into yelling and finger-pointing because “you have no proof!” that racial bias is a thing. Except, yanno, all the POC who live with it daily saying that it’s a thing. Well, congratulations y’all: your choices leave digital footprints behind that are pretty easy to follow and chart for everyone to see.

This isn’t actually a new problem, by the way – racism and preferencing of white pairing happens a lot, in almost every fandom. The only difference maybe is that I’ve experimented with quantifying it, which is not something that people usually do when they study fandoms or fan behavior.

It pains me to no end that M’gann has been so overlooked, because her story has just as many dark character beats to it as Lena’s, if not more, plus the added bonus of her sharing a sense of “otherness” with Kara in a way that few other people can. And there is no way the disinterest in that pairing isn’t about race, because there are a whole bunch of ships from S1 between white women who’d never even met each other in canon that have more romantic fics than M’gann/anyone.

And the nonsense about Floriana, which I’ll remind everyone again was started by a white girl, had a demonstrable chilling effect on interest in Sanvers as a pairing. Like. I can actually show that on paper. And you’re absolutely right with what you said above, which bears repeating: Maggie is absolutely treated like a woc in how parts of fandom aggressively ignore her & find ways to demonize her character.

There’s also a treatment of Floriana herself that reminds me uncomfortably of how people went out of their way to demonize Naya Rivera’s personal life whenever she reminded the world she was black instead of just “very tan.” And a lot of the rhetoric people are using to talk about Floriana’s racial heritage is almost verbatim the same as what you’ll find on white supremacist discussion boards about Italian people. I’d love to think this is an accident, but I’ve made some people pretty angry for pointing this out in the past, so I suspect it’s at least partially deliberate.

Lucy was another case that drove me insane, for two reasons:

  1. The vast majority of femslash fans flat-out ignored her as a romantic choice even though there were a whole lot of good reasons to ship her with either Kara or Alex, and a whole lot less negative reasons not to. (And it’s not like Supercat was already dominating the scene before Lucy’s character was introduced. That ship only became popular after the movie Carol came out during the winter hiatus of S1.)
  2. People had the same fight last year about whether or not Lucy counted as a WOC and ultimately insisted that the answer was no. But then people kept on ignoring her anyway like somehow dubiously legal boss/employee relationships, potential treason, and incest were more logical bases for attraction.

Also, to the people who have been like “oh yay we could’ve had Dichen as Maggie, a real WOC” like somehow this would have made the fandom love her more – you’re full of shit. If you mean that, why has there been so little fic about Dichen as Roulette? Like, last year there were a whole bunch of shipfics featuring Livewire. There was Kara/Siobhan. And yet … no dark scenarios of Supergirl/Roulette? No Alex ones? There were even a bucketload of those for each Danvers sister + Max Lord, and this fandom isn’t even that into dudes. You’re telling me no one is interested in this kind of hero/villain dynamic with the Asian chick and somehow that’s not also about race?

tl;dr I suspect that a decent chunk of this problem is the result of subconscious bias, but some of it’s not. And what’s really sad about it is that, for all the talk on Tumblr about representation being important, we’re really doing no better as media producers than Hollywood when it comes to race. If anything, we might actually be doing worse.

The future - and it is showing us this loud and clear

This episode was amazing. After flailing and basically shouting all day I am so happy and so excited that I joined tumblr - the quality of posts today has been excellent, both humorous and inciteful and I LOVE YOU ALL :)

I hope its ok I’m going to tag a few great posts in this to reference as I don’t want to go over stuff other people have already meta-d about so excellently!

This episode, titled the future, seems to me to be Dabb basically telling us what he wants for the next part of the show, the “better way” that he wants to take it.

So here are my main bullet points that I will expand on a little below and link those excellent posts to where relevant:

A. Sam

Sam is clearly portrayed again, recurrently as the researcher, the “brains” of the operation (before you say ‘Dean is so clever though!’ I’m just pointing out Sam’s love of the scholarly side of things and how this is where he fits). Sam’s endgame must now be to head up the MoL/hunter network in this respect.

B. Sam and Dean

They work so well as a team here, Sam putting a tracker in Cas’s phone while he’s distracted by Dean, researching v whatever Dean was doing (maybe making a pining mixtape along the lines of “all by myself” and “I miss you” “please come home”, BUT they are shown as different people, with different interests, skills and relationships - with Cas for example, & not codependent. Again hammering this home in this episode. THANK YOU DABB, GLYNN & BERENS.

C. THE RECURRING AND CONSISTENT NARRATIVE OF DESTIEL.

This whole episode is one big love fest. We went from one ‘wow I can’t believe they just did that!’ to the next to the next with hardly enough time for us to catch out breath! WHAT WAS THIS EPISODE?!

OK, so we have :

1. My Romeo & Juliet / Gaze up Trope Balcony Meta.

2. The Mixtape Meta, another EXPLICIT romantic trope by @drsilverfish.

3. The Dean “keep it” parallels, the first one that came to my mind was Arwen (another human+ / eternal being who decided to relinquish immortality couple):

Aragon: this belongs to you.
Arwen: keep it, it was a gift… it is mine to give to whom I will, like my heart.

But also all the other ‘gift’ tropes, the standard romantic trope that when a couple breaks up you return the gifts…. I think Cas wasn’t sure he was going to be forgiven, after Dean’s outburst in the war room, so he goes to return the cassette, but Dean does forgive him nearly instantaneously, which actually makes it even worse that he has to steal the colt straight after…

5. The difference between Sastiel and Destiel again emphasised, more and more this season. I don’t think I even have to detail this, just, basically the whole episode shows this.

6. This magnificent gifset by @magnificent-winged-beast which shows the difference between Dean’s angst at actually watching the colt get destroyed and the potential killing of Cas…

Slight aside - Performing!Dean.

This magnificent gifset that shows Dean’s facade coming down, he doesn’t even attempt to make it sound less ‘gay’ when he tells Sam that Cas came to his room, played him and took the colt from his secret hiding place under his pillow, he even looks down before he says it like he KNOWS how it is going to sound but says it anyway.

source: @yourfavoritedirector.

And Sam doesn’t even flinch. YES THANK YOU DABB, GLYNN & BERENS!

4. SO…WHY is Dean still doing everything he did for Cas during this episode and still defending him to Sam even though he appeared pissed and Cas repeatedly betrayed him?

Well, in 12x12 Cas said “I love you”, clearly understood by Dean (and Sam to be directed at Dean). There was no real reciprocation though from Dean, other than Dean family-zoning him and Sam’s fantastic “we are doing this for you, Cas”.

So regarding Dean, Cas is hurt and believes it isn’t reciprocated. Now Dean is pissed and still using the WE card at every turn, so what is a celestial being to do? Cas assumes this is the end, that there is no hope, he returns the mixed tape. BUT Dean says no keep it, this is NOT the end.

Cas understands that this is therefore not the end, but it is complicated. He explains that he wanted to “come back with a win for you…. for myself”. He wants this for Dean and for himself, this is very important, everything he is doing now and in the future is NOT all about Dean, there is his own agency and morality involved here too.

For Cas, when it comes to it, he wants this reciprocation of his love of course, but right now he has bigger fish to fry and really he wants to protect Sam and Dean and save the world

Now, going back to the “what the hell is wrong with you man?” followed by an awkward silence…. and where Cas then goes to return the gift. Yes, Cas feels that he has said his piece in 12x12 and is rebuffed, but meanwhile Dean is struggling with what Cas has said and everything else that is going on. He has a lot on his plate, not only Cas but his own personal history, his deep seated issues that he is clearly working on this season (see all the performing!Dean facade crumbling meta going around), his issues around his mother, the BMoL, Lucifer, the nephilim…. I mean that is a lot for an emotionally healthy person let a lone DEAN WINCHESTER.

Dean is trying to say / show how he feels he’s just rubbish at it, but he’s getting better!

“We?” “Yes dumbass, WE.” This is his forgiveness. And it is betrayed just moments later. But does this stop him trusting Cas again? NO.

THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. For their dynamic, to show that they still do ultimately trust each other.

EVEN AFTER EVERYTHING DEAN STILL DEFENDS CAS TO SAM!

Oh, and I just need to add how desperate I am for Sam to turn to Dean soon and just say “No, Dean, this is between you and Cas, stop bringing me into this”. PLEASE I SWEAR I WILL BE GOOD! I mean, how repeated, consistent and out of place it was (I mean, not only to shippers, I think anyone would think it was out of place the way it was portrayed in their personal conversation in Dean’s room) - this has got to be addressed, no?!

 5. A better way

So. What does this mean moving forwards?

Well, firstly, I have moved from being 85% sure Destiel would be endgame to about 95% sure. Lets be real. This episode cements this. Whether you like it or not, it’s happening.

So, what is the better way?

Overall, it seems that Dabb wants to move things forwards. And his key points all season are Free Will, breaking from past repressions and negative influences, moving forwards with what the characters choose and want for their endgame and for sure now endgame Destiel.

I have in the past speculated about quite a lot of stuff, some right and some… still to be seen and some not right, but the overall arc speculation that I saw foreshadowed since early season 12 is RIGHT ON TRACK.

Now, the question is will Dabb go backwards and go to the old, standard SPN ways where probably Dean and Cas will be separated, Cas will be wrong again in his trust in the nephilim - it WILL be evil (rehash of s6 and s8) and he will need to be ‘broken’ from the mind control by Dean in a stronger crypt scene etc etc etc.

Or will he move forwards, onto a “better way”? Will we get another s11 ‘happy ending’? Where it appears all good but there is still stuff going on behind the scenes for s13… Or maybe a not so happy ending but that ultimately will be resolved happily?

Maybe the baby has it’s grace removed (so glad this is an option it was driving me insane that they hadn’t mentioned it by now!) OR it’s not evil at all! it’s the ANTI-anti-Christ, it chose Cas because he is Lucifer’s mirror in that he LOVES Humanity. I mean, the whole point of the show is agency, free will and not being forced to follow the result of your parentage / past ….especially this season with Sam and Dean’s arcs….

Maybe human!Cas, potential hunter Daddies, Cas staying at home calling Dean while he’s out on MOTW hunts with Sam being all “Dean there’s poop everywhere, I’m sorry it got on your favourite shirt, but please please come home this is so hard!” “OK babe, don’t worry, we’ll be back tomorrow, the case was a milk run!” when actually Dean nearly died and Sammy saved the day and…. etc because really? what are we supposed to think from that motel scene? With Cas smiling all cute and using the world “righteous” when talking about the kids future guardian?! (and Kelly survives if we are going to be extra nice).

Maybe Lucifer will die / be dealt with and it is the MoL that are the big bad next year…..aiding the overall future arc of TFW as leaders of the MoL/Hunter collaboration (Chuck I hope so).

Or will it be a mix of the two?

Well my money is on that it will be a mix….

DABB IS SHOWING US THE FUTURE Y’ALL. AND THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT.

There are non stop metas in Jon's tag about why J*nsa is endgame. Could you please explain why Jonerys is actually endgame? Just something to counter this irritating stream of J*nsa

Hi anon! I don’t think that people writing meta for their ship is irritating. But I do think Jonerys is endgame. My answer is under the cut because it is absolutely enormous. This took a lot of time but I hope it offers you some reassurance.

i don’t know about you guys, but i was in total awe of oswald’s character development in the last episode. the fact that he went from being completely selfish, hellbent on his own survival, to being willing to DIE for ed is just amazing?? like, i’m still not over it. he was willing to be tortured rather than betray ed, even after EVERYTHING ed admitted to. not only did ed try to kill him (in a very violent, painful, way) but ed admitted to leaving elijah’s remains in a dumpster. (i mean, i think that’s not true, but we all know ed treats corpses badly, so who knows??)

even babs was stunned at oswald’s love for ed. she looks at him like she can’t believe it, and she even has to repeat it back to him. “so you’d rather die than give up the man who tried to kill you?” because this is such a huge deal for oswald, and babs knows that.

oswald was more than willing to let butch shoot ed for “betraying” him in episode 5 (when ed took the money back from the voters). but now? oswald would rather die than see ed hurt, even after everything. i am still so fucking shook over that. it’s such a beautiful thing.

ANYWAY. @colfernygma‘s gifset (here) made me realise something. in season 1, oswald says that love is weakness (“your greatest passion becomes your greatest weakness”) which is an obvious parallel to what ed says in season 2 (”but for you and i, it [love] will always be our most crippling weakness”).

but oswald is now at a point where he doesn’t see love as a weakness. it’s his strength. he was willing to put someone else before himself, and he is now more emotionally “mature” than ed. if you squint, every time oswald talks to ed in episode 14, he’s basically trying to help ed see the truth – that ed does love him, that they need each other, that ed didn’t really love isabella.

he even corrects ed, at one point. ed says “i’ve killed before, oswald,” and oswald says “not like this”. okay, oswald’s making the point that ed loves him, which ed claims to not be true, but COME ON. ed is so obviously conflicted about shooting oswald, it’s not even worth going into here. (but for a beautiful, in-depth analysis of ed’s feelings on the shooting, check out @edngyma’s meta here!) oswald is the more emotionally mature of the two of them, even though ed’s the one in a position of power.

oswald is playing the martyr card really hard in this scene. he’s desperately trying to enlighten ed, to make him see the Truth – that he does love and need oswald. but edward nygma is in so much denial it’s literally tragic. he doesn’t want to see past his anger at what oswald did. he doesn’t want to entertain the possibility that he loves oswald, because he’s too blinded by his own pain at oswald’s betrayal. (again, further proof that oswald is more emotionally mature than ed at this point. oswald was able to see past ed’s betrayal, because he loves him.)

ever since the first season, oswald has been steps ahead of ed, narratively. when ed was a nerdy smol, working at the g.c.p.d., oswald was murdering his way up the criminal ladder. oswald was on his Villain Journey way before ed. oswald really took up the moniker of the penguin at the end of season 1, and ed hasn’t even been called the riddler yet.

and then, in season 2, ed was fanboying over oswald and wanted him to be his murder senpai, because ed was still behind oswald, narratively. ed has always been following oswald’s lead. since getting out of arkham, ed has even dressed like oswald. he’s always been playing catch up.

people have already paralleled ed shooting oswald to oswald pushing fish off the roof in the season 1 finale, so i’m gonna bring that up now. oswald had to kill fish, to fully blossom into a beautiful criminal kingpin in season 2. it was a case of the student becoming the teacher (with a dash of homicide).

oswald has always been ed’s teacher. ed asked to be oswald’s student in season 2. (“i brought you here, in part, because i was hoping you could guide me on this new path.”) and then, after getting out of arkham, oswald gave ed suits, and a home, and a position of power. though ed had become a murderer all by himself, he was still subordinate to oswald. he still looked up to oswald. he even says it (“i continue to be in awe of you oswald”).

in order to fully begin his riddler journey, ed needed to “kill” his mentor, as a symbolic way of letting him go and moving on without him. to edward, oswald has fulfilled his purpose as his teacher. ed has to assert his position as a Badass Villain (in the eyes of babs and tabs and butch) by killing his mentor. like oswald killing fish to show everyone that they shouldn’t mess him with, ed “killed” oswald to prove to the criminal underworld that he’s not someone to be trifled with.

to drag it back to my original point: oswald had already gone through a version of this arc. as with everything, it took ed longer to reach this narrative place. but now he has, and we all know he’s gonna go on to don the ridiculous green suit and bowler hat, and fully embrace the riddler aesthetic.

so, at some point, ed is going to have to come to realisation that love ISN’T a weakness, but a strength. in season 2, when he says “for you and i, it will always be our most crippling weakness”, he’s including oswald in that. “for BOTH OF US love is weakness”. but love is no longer a weakness for oswald. love is a strength.

now it’s ed’s turn to come to that realisation. oswald’s already TOLD him – “you need me, edward nygma. just as i need you. you cannot have one without the other.” oswald and ed are stronger as a team than they are apart. oswald knows this, but ed doesn’t. not yet, anyway.

it makes sense that oswald comes to the realisation that love is actually a strength before ed does. because oswald has always been ahead of ed. this is just a continuation of the pattern that ed and oswald always follow. oswald is, as always, steps ahead of ed.

2x13 “Houses of the Holy” // 5x01 “Sympathy for the Devil”
5x10 “Abandon All Hope” // 5x18 “Point of No Return”
5x22 “Lucifer Rising” // 12x12 “Stuck in the Middle (with You)”

“You’re Chosen…” - Dean Winchester as Michael’s Vessel and the Thing about the Colt

“There was a gun that won the west. There was a man among the best. The fastest gun or man alive. A lightning bolt when he shot that Colt.”

- Lucifer in 12x12 “Stuck in the Middle (with You)

So after this episode I just felt the need to make a gifset on Dean’s ties to Michael as well as the Colt, because in this week’s episode both of these themes were directly brought together by the visual of Mary retrieving the Colt from a safe hidden behind the famous painting of Michael striking down Lucifer. And while I have little faith that the show will truly let Dean play an integral role as the one who is Michael’s vessel and should be perfectly able to wield the lance to get rid of Lucifer once and for all and rather think the possession allusions surrounding Mary may frame her possibly being the one heavily involved here , I keep holding on to a tiny bit of hope that probably is ridiculous to hold on to. But what can I say? Dean picking up the lance and taking it with him at least left room for possibility.

John and Mary’s A+ parenting

If season 12 has shown us anything, it’s how very similar John and Mary actually are. Here are some of the most obvious instances:

1. Not taking it for valid/not being happy about their son’s rightful anger and/or hurt and trying to forbid it:

“You’re right. Although I’m not too crazy about this new tone of yours, you’re right.” - John to Dean (1x21), after Dean calls him out on the fact that they were never able to reach him when they needed him. Because it’s completely unreasonable for Dean to feel angry and deeply hurt that John didn’t bother picking up the phone when Dean was dying.

“Do not give me the face.” - Mary to Dean (12x13), when he rightfully looks at her in utter disappointment and betrayal after her confession. Dean didn’t even say anything yet, but apparently he’s not even allowed to look at her in a certain way to express his feelings.

2. Looking pleased and proud when their son is catering to their every need, while he puts himself and his own choices/wishes last:

John’s speech to Dean in the hospital (2x01) and his elated smile while he talks about how proud he is of Dean for taking care of Sammy and their whole family his entire life, sacrificing his own childhood in the process. And then basically telling him to continue to do so.

Mary looking so delighted and pleased (12x14) when Dean tells her that she can make her own choices and his feelings on them don’t matter.

3. Forcing one of their children into the position of having to choose between their parent or brother, and thus causing a rift in their relationship:

John’s parentification of Dean and making him responsible for Sam’s well-being, while at the same time brainwashing him into following his orders which more often than not had nothing to do with Sam’s best interests. Thus putting Dean into the impossible position of making both of them happy with his actions (basically all their childhood and season 1).

Mary trying to convince Dean to talk to her and agree with her on working with the BMoL and when it doesn’t work, contacting Sam even though she knows that Dean is completely against it. Thus playing/manipulating them against each other and forcing Sam into the situation to pick between his mom and his brother (12x14).

4. Lamenting about what they want for their children, instead of asking them what they actually want/need.

“I want to stop losing people we love. I want you to go to school, I want Dean to have a home. I want….I want Mary alive. It’s just….I just want this to be over.” - John to Sam (1x21). It would have been in John’s power to give them at least some of these things. He could have encouraged Sam to go to college and he could have given Dean a stable home while growing up. Nobody forced him to drag his children around the country and letting them live in shitty motel rooms, when they needed exactly the opposite. But his thirst for revenge and his guilt were stronger than his need to provide some safety and support for his children.

“We’ve got a real shot here. A world without monsters. A world where you and Dean don’t have to hunt, where you can have normal lives. (…) You were going to school, to college. (…) That’s why I’m doing this. That is what I’m fighting for.” - Mary to Sam (12x14). A lovely thought, sure. But does she ever ask if that’s even what they want anymore? Sam tells her that he chose this life. He’s been content with his life and hunting during the last two seasons and at peace with himself like we’ve never seen before. Dean even told her in the very first episode after she came back that this is their life and that they’re doing something good and that it’s worth it. They’ve grown up and their lives may not be what Mary envisioned, but her desire to change the status quo comes from her own needs and guilt and nowhere else.

5. Abandoning their sons when they need them and only showing up when they feel like it/need something.

John leaving them alone for days/weeks in shitty motel rooms when they were only children. John not being accessible for them, when they desperately tried to contact him (1x09, 1x12). John deciding they’re better off on their own (1x16). John leaving Dean to rot in jail and when Dean ended up at Sonny’s place instead, taking him away when he needed him with no regard to what was going on in Dean’s life at this point (9x07). To name a few instances.

Mary leaving (12x03), when Dean and Sam were so excited and happy about getting a chance to know her and be a family. Leaving, despite Sam having told her just before that having her here fills in the biggest blank in his life (12x02). Leaving, despite the way Dean physically recoils from her when she tries to touch him because she’s hurting him so deeply by doing it (12x03). And then staying away from them, barely making any effort to get to know them, and only reaching out to them when she needs something from them (12x12, 12x13, 12x14).

6. Not being a mom/dad first.

“I stopped being your father and I became your drill sergeant.” - John to Sam (1x20). John was always “Sir” first. He was their drill sergeant, as he himself puts it. He expected blind obedience, instead of offering guidance and support. He didn’t even bother celebrating birthdays or holidays with his children.

“I am your mother, but I’m not just a mom. And you are not a child.” - Mary to Dean (12x13), after he asks her to try and be their mom for once. He never asked her to be “just a mom”. But he asked her, quite rightfully, to put them first for once. To think about how it’s been for them. And to have her throw those ugly words “You are not a child” in his face in response, when that’s exactly what his life has been like ever since he was four years old, was the worst thing to witness. Also - because I mentioned it for John, too - Christmas and Dean’s birthday have come and gone since Mary is back and considering the way Dean is being so openly disappointed about the lack of time she’s spent with them, I doubt she was there for either of those days.

I’m sure there are even more examples, but my heart hurts too much right now thinking about this. Maybe I’ll add things later (Mary is still around to provide more evidence after all).

I would have loved to make a gifset of all these instances, but sadly I haven’t got enough skill. If anyone wants to make one based on this post I’d be eternally grateful!

13x01 - Episode Review - Part 2

“Nougat Winchester” and narrative mirrors in 13x01

It has taken me forever to finish this part of my review to the extent that we have already had another episode before I finished it! But rather than curse my inability to focus I’m gonna press on and complete this before I start my 13x02 review.

Ah Jack, Jack our little nougat Jack. The way the fandom has embraced you is very touching. The internet screams of “PROTECT HIM” certainly show that Alexander Calvert has done an exceptional job of “pulling a Misha” and making us fall in love with him by the end of his first scene. I was not expecting that one bit.

I’ll be honest and say that over the hiatus I haven’t paid too much attention to him. I did read some of the meta and speculation that @tinkdw and others put out there, but it was never really something I focused my thoughts on. I figured he would be another character that would test the team free will dynamic and would be a good avenue for the writers to comment on the concepts of nature vs nurture. I remember reading some speculation once the episode titles first came out about “The Scorpion and the Frog” and anyone who knows that story knows very well that the title itself foreshadows Jack going darkside – to his own potential destruction. (The scorpion, in carrying out its own “nature” and stinging the frog that carried it – not only doomed the frog, but doomed itself as well.)

Jack has officially won me over though. He was a charming innocent and funny character, and I think his interactions with Clark brought a lot of light to an otherwise terribly angsty and painfully heart breaking episode. (#bringbackClark2k17)

But what really blew me away was how both Jack AND Clark were such OBVIOUS mirrors for Dean and Cas and to a lesser extent to Sam. It amused me to no end. Therefore this review will focus on those mirrors, and what they mean.

Long post under the cut

Dabb vs cars

Surprisingly, not the next round in my ongoing, bitter feud about his continuity problems. A “I come in peace” study on parking.

I watched 10x09 today and I did the usual OTP “aw they’re so far apart” sad heart feeling at the shot of them all outside Sharkey’s.

No, not Dean n Cas.

The Impala and Pimpmobile.

Anyway it got me thinking about in that moment it represented pretty well how Dean and Cas were doing with each other. Of course there isn’t room to park beside Cas’s car, so Dean goes and parks on the other side of the door, leaving this big gap between them, bigger because there’s a parking mark thingy Cas is about to trip over before the shot abruptly ends. (I hope Misha was okay.) The cars have a clear line of sight to each other, but there’s just something so unutterably sad about there being no way for them to park side by side, per Cas’s parking, and Dean putting that extra space between them. (Also so they can go in the door… I’d say unobstructed but the longer I watch the gif the more I become convinced there’s footage out there of Misha ruining the impression of Cas’s reserved dignity…)

In the context of season 10, where Destiel was at right then was the first time they’d seen each other since 10x03, when Dean cleared his bed for Cas like, thanks for saving me from myself pls make yourself comfy, and Cas freaked out and gabbled some stuff about work and Hannah and such and told Dean to rest up, then fled the scene. Dean is pissed off Cas called for help over trying to deal with Claire (and it kind of looks like making excuses of busywork to not come home, when you flee with an apparently important mission and it turns out you’re wandering around trying to earn back brownie points with your vessel’s daughter, having randomly and abruptly swapped onto a personal mission without telling Dean a word of it) and in general the car placement amused me by seeming to echo how they were doing.

Being me, obviously thinking about that made me start thinking about Dabb, cars, and his old Carver era patterns. He got the one per season (two if we were lucky) Deep Emotional DeanCas Talk, to give us a real, solid moment to show how they were truly doing. 8x08, 9x10, 9x22, 10x09, and 11x10 spring to mind though obviously in other episodes he wrote with them they also still shared some pretty epic emotional moments or there were other strong Destiel things. However he is the one who gave us Cas’s original car, and two of these instances are directly before the Big Talk to tide things over and give us the emotional background for later. I figured some thoughts about some notable Dabb car stuff would be a nice thing to do. After my amused nostalgia run through Carver era moments, I’ve included Dabb era in general and picked out some other moments.

9x10 is the start of all this, once Cas finally gets some wheels of his own. The most interesting set piece barely involves any driving, but is the first time the Impala and Continental are parked beside each other. Like, RIGHT beside. Like, Dean n Cas should be this close to each other all the time. Cas’s car is a step ahead (I mean, I assume so he could get out the door). All episode Dean n Cas are a beautiful emotionally supportive unit, but Dean can’t cope with this, and so he gets in his car and leaves, pulling away from the closeness he’s offered from his family, the thing with the cars being exactly what he did when he walked away from them on the bridge too. I mean, that’s fairly obvious, I’m just amused after I went back to look, HOW closely the two cars were parked, like they wanted Cas’s car in that shot, next to Dean’s, and they’d force the most unrealistic parking job ever when there’s all that unused space around them, to get all the random details into the shot they needed. As a bonus, Dean had to have been the one to park the Impala so close blocking Cas’s car in. Unconscious desire to be so close to him and to keep him? He’s still recovering from asking him to leave.

(I know the Impala and Continental shared space in several end of season 9 episodes but not 9x22 as far as I recall in the earlier parts, and the Worst Dabb Vs Cars Fuckery Of Them All occurs in the final driving moment of that episode, just putting Cas IN the Impala for the drive home despite the fact his car ends up the Bunker at the start of 9x23… That’s a symbolic gesture of what he was trying to convey in the moment of Cas sitting in the back of the car but for the sake of talking about how they park together, useless. I feel like in 9x18 it’s just a reminder Cas HAS the car, and the show doesn’t do anything useful with it to represent Cas…)

Onto 11x10, and honestly my favourite of Dabb’s Dean n Cas chatting scenes because it’s technically pretty superfluous except for the fact he really really wanted a final DeanCas chat before Cas got Casifered, and so he made one heck of a driving continuity snarl to wrangle it. Obviously Cas followed Dean’s longing to his spot because how else… Anyway, he parks a long long way off. In season 11 he’s feeling very distanced from Dean by his anxiety and trauma. This is the epitome of the “I came as soon as you called” behaviour, with Cas dropping everything to come help Dean, and romantic blurring into focus walk aside, the long shot shows us beautifully that Cas is hesitant to approach, and maintaining the distance with Dean. After all the season 10 and early 11 drama between them, including several rounds of mind controlled punch ups, they’re fragile and miserable, and Cas’s last interaction with Dean on screen was an angry and frustrating one. Cas himself bridges the distance betwen them but his car waiting off in the background suggests his reservations, and the rest of the episode spells out everything, before he chooses to do something he thinks will help move their cars closer, as it were.

Entering Dabb era proper, in 12x02 we see Cas’s new truck (still with hay) and Dean pulling up to it. Obviously they’ve got their mission to save Sam, the jokes about Mary being brought along to chaperone their date, etc. But since the car conversation in 11x23 the ball has been in Dean’s court to approach Cas, and I would assume the mythical instance of mixtape giving is somewhere between 12x01 and 12x19; the point is, here, as the first 2 episodes of season 12 in general showed (and Dean in 12x22 confirmed talking about how happy he was to have Cas and Mary back in the same breath), Dean approaches Cas, parking right behind his truck, as a symbol of the confidence and comfort they have now. They work great as a team in this part of the season, although Cas has been standing around by his lonely parked truck waiting for most of the episode up to that point, and is forced to continue standing by the truck for most of the rest of the episode.

12x12 Cas is still in the “I’ll just wait here then” mode, hanging out at their designated meeting place as Sam, Dean, Mary and Wally arrive in a convoy and park on the other side of this parking lot, so he has to come to join them (Dean rotating on the spot as he does so… heh, I love that moment.) By the middle of season 12 Cas has run away to find Lucifer, echoing 10x03’s parting, and also killed for them and invited cosmic consequences, and in 12x10 given a firm well-communicated emotional talk to help him feel included and loved, and yet he also leaves to search for Kelly some more, echoing other times he’s gone off to do a side project and been very much on the outside. Once again he’s waiting for them to catch up, and Dean seems to breeze by him - and there’s so many other people with them (and part of why he left in 12x03 was to give Sam and Dean space with Mary, exclusing himself from the family). In the diner scene Cas has the whole waitress thing to deal with, with Dean acting up around so many people with conflicting needs to perform. Cas has been waiting for an incredibly long time, but if you ever needed a more firm “the ball is in your court” it’s the “I love you” at the end of the episode.

12x19 also has a important “where the cars are placed” sequence, which you could really do with a whole gifset of, but of course the Impala is there because Kelly stole it, and it’s been left off to the side by them; likewise Sam and Dean are left to the side by them as they drive off. Sam and Dean placed the truck before they did that and took it back (and all the stuff about Cas and Dean and fixing the truck in the episode is a whole ‘nother thing)… From this angle it looks ominously like the park in which Dean found Mary, with the lights behind the trees going on - of course night has just fallen rather than the sun coming up, and Cas is driving away from the light. As Dean walked Mary into their lives, newly resurrected, Cas drives out of their lives >.> Between all the stealing cars and rushing into save Cas, the gap between them as they’re parked is obvious and as a result of the circumstances. They’re apart because there’s too much going on, Kelly made off with Cas in the car, and Sam and Dean were helpless chasing after them. The distance and swapping around of cars and using them as part of the chaos is very effective. Cas calmly takes possesion of his truck again, freshly fixed by Dean, but drives off with Kelly. In 12x23 they steal some stock Destiel phrases to exchange, and it’s touching the truck which opens the rift. I had a nose around the outdoors scenes and couldn’t spot Cas’s truck and the Impala even on the same side of the building, and honestly am kind of confused about where the truck went. Not, as I said, that I’m trying to continue the feud with this post. But I mean.

*clears throat*

I’m just saying he ruined the continuity in 12x01 for 12x02 by doing the exact same thing as 9x22 by just not using Cas’s truck when it would make sense to take as many vehicles as they can get their hands on so they could split up… Obviously all the many set pieces to do with cars worked best/could only work if there was just the Impala but it’s all style over function again… So in 12x02 to let Cas split up to help they add an extra day to let him get the truck so he can follow leads and do the legwork, and Mary and Dean end up back at the Bunker, immediately falling back into old static patterns when it would have made so much sense to just have them in a motel NEARBY instead of abandoning their hot trail on finding Sam so Mary could shower… He handed them that excuse on a platter and killed the urgency and Dean n Cas were split up all episode when they could have been at least local-ish to each other and maybe had that phonecall in person and and and… shh Lizzy

ok since i literally never shut up about how much i love youngmin i just wanted to talk about my last gifset aka the scene where youngmin gives dongbin a pep talk right after practicing in front of boa. i could talk about everything regarding boys & girls team but i’m gonna focus on this specific moment because it speaks so much about his personality and shows us a little bit of how wonderful he is !!!

everyone here knows that youngmin is always working behind the scenes to help out the other kids and this instance right here is the best example of that. the boys went to sit down in the back and it was another group’s turn to practice so none of the cameras or attention should’ve been on them but that’s how genuine he is; he never intended for people to see or hear his encouragement for dongbin in the first place. he wasn’t doing it bc he wanted to look good in front of the camera, he was doing it for the sake of his team member and his team member only. he wasn’t making a big fuss out of it and he wasn’t trying to prove how nice of a person he was. his compassion for the other boys on this show is simply so genuine.

when youngmin talked about how nervous he was, he wasn’t comparing his situation to dongbin’s. even tho he was a bnm trainee who had a lot of burden and pressure, he wasn’t using it as a way to guilt dongbin. he didn’t mean “oh you shouldn’t be nervous, i’m the one who has more pressure and more consequences, etc.” or anything that made dongbin feel inferior; in fact, he was sharing his worries with dongbin to make him realize that they were both the same. he was letting dongbin know that he understood how nervous he was bc he felt the same way too, that it was natural for them to be nervous and they shouldn’t be ashamed of it. here he was acting as an older figure by reassuring dongbin that even tho they’re nervous, they can still do this.

another important thing that youngmin does is that he doesn’t blame dongbin for his lack of rapping skills. yes, everyone knows that dongbin’s rapping skills are not up to par and that he’s struggling, but he never outright criticizes him for not being able to do something. instead he addressed dongbin’s fear of failing onstage bc his confidence is what really makes or breaks his performance. when youngmin points out to dongbin that he has performed well before and that he can do it again, he’s reminding him of his value and how successful he can (and will) be. not only does that help dongbin gain some more self-esteem, it shows how much he cares about him to remember his past achievements when they weren’t even on the same team.

the tone youngmin uses might seem intimidating at first bc he’s talking so fast and firmly but when you pair it with his hand gestures and body posture, you can definitely tell that he’s just concerned and wants to be able to help ease dongbin’s troubled mind. he gives dongbin his full attention and even takes his hand into his for support. he never breaks eye contact and the fist bump he initiates at the end makes it clear to dongbin that he is not angry with him and that he is not blaming him in the slightest. youngmin knows how to communicate with others well, especially with those younger than him since he has a younger brother at home, and it really helps him establish the trust and bond between him and his team members as both a mentor and a friend who wants the best for him. i don’t know how dongbin views youngmin but compared to how his previous team treated him when they were picking the center, i hope he was able to see how much youngmin truly cared for him and wanted him to improve with his own ability.

anyways that’s all i wanted to say about this, or all i remember right now anyways i just really love youngmin a lot and the way he treats other people on the show is really inspiring he’s truly an angel a gift to the world and i love him so much ;;;

Can you finish your thoughts on Shaw/Root/TM from the tags on that gifset? Please???? :)

y’all should know better than to encourage me to ramble about things. i have zero concept of being brief or concise. so here you go.

This is an expansion of some meta i wrote in some tags about Root’s character development as pertaining to her relationship with the Machine and Shaw. So I don’t have to repeat it every other sentence, a lot of this is headcanon…as in my opinions…you’re completely allowed to disagree and have your own headcanon, that’s the beauty of fandom:

As a kid, Root was already a smug little computer whiz before Hanna got killed, if not already a hacker then definitely heading down that path. Root’s always been arrogant and I imagine she thought she was too good for the horrible little town she was stuck in. On top of that there was whatever situation was going on with her mother…that’s open to interpretation of course, but it was said that she hung out in the library to avoid going home. Hanna and computers were the best things Root had going on in her life. Computers were easier to understand and deal with than humans and let her enact a measure of control over something in a world where she felt trapped and not in control. Especially after Hanna died.

I think root already liked bending and breaking the rules, feeling superior to people who didn’t, but when all the rules of the ‘civilized’ world failed her the night Hanna was taken she realized that rules only applied to you if you let them. Rules weren’t real. They were part of humans’ bad code and a thing to be exploited. Computers, of course, do have rules and logic that they can’t disobey. If a computer isn’t doing what it’s supposed to do than somewhere along the line a human messed up…either wrote bad code or made bad hardware, etc. The universe and humans and emotions are a giant chaotic mess without rhyme or reason, but computers are perfect, logical.

The thing about Root though is she very much is human and has so many of the traits she sees as flaws…I think that’s part of the reason for her wildly shifting self-value. She has an enormous emotional capacity that she’s struggled to keep in check and funneled only into anger for most of her life, so when her emotions do come out it’s like opening a floodgate. But before the Machine and Shaw she compartmentalized all of that, locked it away, didn’t allow herself to feel anything she considered weak. She cared about Hanna and then she lost her and that hurt horribly. Therefore, in Root logic, if she doesn’t care about people, she can’t get hurt. One of the reasons her emotions and mannerisms often come off as over the top and child-like is because she never allowed herself to learn to regulate them.

Then the Machine enters the picture. One of the many things Root’s been locking away is loneliness. I think from later seasons it’s fairly apparent that she’s a deeply lonely person even if she spent most of her life writing that off as a weakness. But if humans are bad code and weak than she can never really allow herself to care about them or let them in. But the Machine isn’t human. She sees the Machine not only as an inherently more worthy form of life, but as someone she can finally allow herself to care for.

Root’s face lights up whenever the Machine talks to her and that’s definitely partly her deification of her, but it’s also because she loves her, as a god and the friend she always wanted. When she doesn’t find TM at the end of God Mode it completely breaks her and she shuts down and goes away inside her head because she’s lost something again and it hurts horribly and she doesn’t know how to deal with that. And when the Machine chooses to talk to her it’s everything she’d always hoped for.

But the Machine isn’t exactly what she’d imagined. TM won’t let her kill and sets her up to help save humanity. Root starts out being somewhat amused but indulgent of the no kill rule (’even this guy?’), and probably doesn’t mind the saving humanity bit since she sees it as the Machine helping to make humanity better and also gives her a feeling of importance…because TM values her enough to ask her to do this.

Around this time, Shaw becomes another factor in Root’s life. I don’t see Root as having had any real meaningful relationships in her life, and I don’t think she immediately falls head over heels for Shaw…instant chemistry, yes..instant love, no. I do think TM sees potential there though either before or during Mors Praematura. At that point Root cares about what the Machine thinks/wants and won’t kill people because she cares about TM’s wishes, but she still doesn’t care about people. Perhaps TM saw Shaw as a person Root could care about. Also, even though this is a meta post about Root I’d like to say that TM probably also thought Root would be good for Shaw…it was never just about one or the other of them; it was always about both of them together.

Fast forward to Aletheia. Shaw goes back to look for Root. I’ve probably mentioned this in a ton of other posts but I strongly believe that was the first time someone had done something like that for her (the end of mors praematura doesn’t exactly count). It was an indication that a human cared for her and for once she doesn’t see that as a negative or a thing to be exploited.

That brings us to the episode I wrote the original meta tags about…Root Path. The whole episode is TM smacking her in the head to try and explain that her actions have cascading consequences and end up hurting multiple people. This isn’t something Root has generally thought about or given a shit about before, but TM is telling her and she loves TM and doesn’t want to disappoint her. Her whole ‘how badly did you have to break it’ speech is about her not understanding how a being that was supposed to be above human weaknesses is telling her that humans are important. And while TM can drill this into her head over and over it doesn’t click until she realizes she’s fallen for Shaw. I think that the end of root path is when she starts accepting that.

Root needed both of TM and Shaw to get where she ended up. I don’t think she ever genuinely likes people, and she continues to treat most people in a condescending fashion, but she can’t make the sweeping generalization that humans == bad code now because Shaw isn’t bad code so that statement is no longer always true. And that opens up a lot of possibilities. TM got Root to a point where she could admit to care for another human and Shaw was the human she could care for and who cared for her. All three of them are very much tied up on each other’s character arcs which is one of the reasons I thought it was such a shame we never got to see Shaw and TM interact over the course of the story.

One last comment…I’ve seen discussions of whether Shaw or TM is more important to Root and I personally don’t find this a useful question to ask. Both of them are so damn integral to her life that she’s devastated at the idea of losing either. They are both immeasurably important to her and being forced to put a value on one over the other would be deeply upsetting for her and ultimately pointless. It is possible to have more than one thing that you care for without it lessening the importance of either.

Hope that was what you were after, anon!

anonymous asked:

Kat what are you thoughts about Bellarke canon next season, how you think is gonna go and when first half or second half. for me is gonna be in midseason finale or soon than that.

Hey Anon!

I go back and forth on this a bit, honestly. I keep my spec pretty vague as far as pinning things down to specific episodes since thats not how my brain works, but I definitely think we’ll get canon romantic Bellarke next season, and the midseason finale seems likely right now to me as well. I think that once Bellamy and Clarke reunite, they are going to have a lot to sort through emotionally (he thought she was DEAD for 6 years….DEADDDD), but we have to remember that Clarke never gave up hope that he was alive. She talked to him every day for 2199 days, dammit. If that’s not love, what the hell is??

Consider this: if they hadn’t been separated, I really do think that we would have gotten an overt love confession in 413. Character-wise, we didn’t for at least 2 reasons:

1. Clarke thought she was going to die. You can see it in her face in the Head & Heart scene. She thought she was a goner, and there’s no way she would burden Bellamy with that only to leave him. She was solely focused on his wellbeing, and the survival of the rest of Spacekru.

2. Bellamy literally could not accept the fact that she wouldn’t make it, doesn’t even allow himself to consider that. He’s in deep denial about the reality of their situation because he loves Clarke so damn much. He thinks if they make it to the ring, they all make it to the ring, Clarke included. He thought they would have 5 years of relative peace together and ANYWAY NOW MY HEART HURTS.

Side note: they are both SO GONE for each other. Their lives and happiness have been so wrapped up in each other for so long. They are each other’s person. They are each other’s rock. Anytime someone mentions the possibility one of them might not make it for any variety of pressing and probable reasons, the other one SHUTS IT THE FUCK DOWN. There are so many good gifsets that make this parallel so well, it just kills me every time.

Anyway, back to the s5 reunion…I do think the show is gonna draw it out a bit as far as the romantic stuff goes. Not too long, and not because the feelings aren’t there, but because when have we ever had it easy? Plus, it’s the nature of the genre: shit happens, and romance isn’t the main plot, even though Clarke and Bellamy’s relationship is obviously central to the story. There are so many plot reasons that could keep them apart for a bit (more physically than emotionally, but that too). Given what we know about s5 so far, the plot is going to be jam packed and develop at breakneck speed.

I’m a little worried about that, not gonna lie, because s3 and s4 both suffered from trying to pack too much plot in, at the detriment of character development. BUT even with that concern, I still believe Bellarke will be canon by the end of 5a, even if they get separated again at that point or some other plot contrivance intervenes to keep them apart. It could be the prisoner ship, it could be the situation with the bunker, it could be other grounders, it could be Cadogan?? (seriously I need more on that storyline), it could be Madi in trouble, it could be anything. Maybe Pauna survived Praimfaya and is out for blood (ok that one is fully a joke). Bellarke might have a love confession and then have to split up for a minute…or maybe it just looks like they do and they leave us hanging over the break between 5a and 5b DONT YELL AT ME ITS NOT WHAT I WANT but you know the writers love to make us suffer. And they do it so well.

IS THIS HIATUS OVER YET????

Since we’re at the end and I’ve never really been a part of a fandom before I wanted to take a moment because I have too many feelings.

Shoutout to each and every one of my followers first and foremost. Thank you all for taking an interest in my blog; I never dreamed I’d have so many of you :)

anonymous asked:

Hi! Ive been really confused about the whole Dean Cas relationship. Like I know Dean cares for Cas deeply but it's no where near what Cas has done for Dean(giving up everything he has) So like am I not noticing something here or like is their dynamic like that?

I don’t think relationships should be measured by what one gives up for the other. I think it’s something the show accidentally imparts with all the dramatic self-sacrifice but it’s something the show has also been trying to dismantle since season 8, with the plot thread of showing the codependency between Sam and Dean as unhealthy instead of something to glorify, and attempting to move them to a healthier place with more people to rely on and less dependence on each other to the point of ceasing to function when the other is dead.

I’m sorry to keep going back to @superspecpod but maybe it’s just because it’s out loud meta so the words stick in my head differently, but I’m remembering them talking in the most recent (”super lost plotlines” or something) about how Cas would want to see Dean sacrifice for him in a way for the narrative to show us Dean cares as much for Cas as he does for Sam, and as Cas does for him. But at the same time really really don’t want it for Dean’s sake because it will be putting him in a really bad place, regressing his dependent tendencies back again but putting them on Cas instead of Sam, and just be another character development mountain to climb.

I think it’s also weird that the way the show has been telling it, things swing around about how much we think one or the other loves more desperately than the other - I remember reading season 8 meta that was deeply upset or addressing deep upset that Dean seemed to love Cas enormously but Cas wouldn’t reciprocate and was there a chance Cas would EVER seem to love Dean as much as Dean loves him?

I also think that as of 12x19 the show is officially starting to convey that Cas’s give it all up for Dean over and over pattern is just as bad for him as Dean’s similar problem with sacrificing for Sam, so the fact Cas keeps on doing it is a problem he needs help with not a way that he gestures he loves Dean so much more.

Any thoughts/theories on who Savitar might be, in light of the "Once and Future Flash" episode? I'm hearing people suspect it might be Eddie, which could be cool. And that fits in with the whole "Barry ruined my life" thing and also 2024 Killer Frost's comments that Barry would be "so surprised" when he found out. But I also feel like if that was the case Caitlin would have been more confused/suspicious towards him instead of just immediately giving in like she did at the end of the episode?

I’ve talked a lot about my theories and the various ones I’ve heard, weighing the possibilities, but maybe I should have it all in one place, so here we go.

Who Savitar might be (in descending order of likelihood).

1. Barry Allen

This is my favorite theory.

Maybe it’s a Barry who becomes so twisted by the death of Iris that he makes a time remnant who becomes Savitar somehow. Maybe it’s the version of Barry that was destroyed by Barry changing the timeline so many times, and he’s been caught in the speedforce going mad all this time, re-witnessing his mother’s death.

Who knows? Not me. But I can see it from how this season has gone, with it being about consequences to Barry’s time travel. And Caitlin knows enough about time travel and time remnants to put that together quick, upon seeing Savitar’s identity. Like I mentioned somewhere else, her reaction could’ve been a “this version of you is as twisted as I am as Killer Frost” - a mutual understanding of what they’ve both become.

This theory also makes the most sense from Savitar’s “it’s me or you” thing with Iris. Maybe Barry needs to become so twisted and broken to become Savitar, and Iris has to die in order for that to happen.

2. Eddie Thawne

This would warrant some surprise from Killer Frost, given that Eddie was pretty dead last we checked. She wasn’t quite confused enough for this, maybe?

But note that Eddie died within a time loop, right? The only reason he killed himself is because Eobard time travelled. No Eddie procreating, no Eobard to travel back in time and cause Eddie to ultimately kill himself. The speedforce shelters that timeline (Eobard’s original timeline) to prevent a world-collapsing paradoxical time loop, but we don’t really know if that means Eddie just stays dead, or if he’s maybe been stuck in the speedforce or caught in a time loop going mad?

It also plays into the “you’ll never guess” thing they’ve got going, but fit with it being someone who knows the team / has been watching them, has a personal connection to Iris. Idk, this gifset had some interesting points/parallels for it.

3. Cobalt Blue / Malcolm Thawne / Barry’s evil twin

This one is out of the comics but I’m a fan of this theory. Separated twins at birth, a twin who thinks Barry took “everything” from him by having the life that he was supposed to have but never got to, raised by the Thawnes and not the Allens. It seems unlikely to me that they’d actually play it out this way, but some Cobalt Blue reference or tie-in wouldn’t really surprise me.

Anyway, @ladyofpride and @prouvairablehulk have made an interesting case for this.

4. Ronnie Raymond

So people are suggesting this one I think because of the Killer Frost tie-in? And maybe because it’s sort of unclear what the heck happened to Ronnie’s body when he was sucked into the singularity. Maybe he wasn’t crushed by gravity and maybe he didn’t get chucked out as a corpse onto Earth 2. Maybe he just got lost in the speedforce, sucked in like Roscoe (Turbine) in the New 52.

I kind of dig this theory on a few fronts, including that it would be a genuine twist, fit with the comics in that weird way, and sort of have a strange tie-in with how Julian was Savitar’s avatar and was falling for Caitlin all season. But, I do believe if this were true, Killer Frost’s reaction to seeing him would’ve included more shock and awe and joy?

5. Iris West

This is a new theory I’ve seen floating around. It’s neat, placing the “it’s you or me, Iris” thing in an entirely new light. Iris doesn’t die, she becomes Savitar. Or I mean, she does die, and thus becomes Savitar.

I feel that Killer Frost’s reaction at the end of 3x19 would actually fit with it being Iris, to be totally honest, but I still think it’s ultimately a little unlikely. That being said, the seasonal big bad being a woman? Into it. And it would be an unexpected twist. What better to ruin Barry than the woman he loves becoming the one who ruins him?

6. Another speedster: Jay Garrick, Wally West, Jesse Quick, Eliza Harmon

Mostly Wally and Jay, but I think these are all at least a little plausible, right? Jay is stuck in the speedforce right now though, so it would have to be a Jay from a different time. Wally is an interesting theory to me… Savitar took a shining to Wally and used him, got close to him, imprisoned him and the speedforce didn’t want to let Wally go.

Also, it would but a neat spin on 2024!Wally. Wally goes after Savitar, Savitar breaks his back and does something to him, and Wally becomes permanently catatonic? Maybe he’s catatonic due to becoming Savitar? I know it’s convoluted and silly and unlikely, but hell, this show handwaves a lot.

Jesse seems unlikely but she’s a speedster so? Same with Trajectory – she was destroyed by the speedforce after all. Maybe Velocity made her one with the speedforce. It’s silly and I doubt it, but hey, I’m being thorough.

7. Leonard Snart

I don’t think this is likely, but some people think Occulus!Len might’ve become the God of Speed. @literallyflashtrash suggested it as a crack theory but it’s taken off since then, and others have thought it up independently as well. I think we all just miss Snart. It’s okay guys, I miss him too.

8. Humanized!Grodd

“I am the future, Flash…” - Grodd, New 52. Enough Said.

9. Patty Spivot

@terrie01‘s joke but hell, at this point, I won’t even be surprised. Throw us all for a loop, writers.

10. A random hot dude because KF is thirsty

Someone joked about this and I 100% approve. “you’re gonna be sooo suprised… that Savitar is someone you haven’t even met!”

11. Edward Clarriss / The Rival

The dude had a big enough ego, right? Was created by Flashpoint. Maybe Savitar is somehow a remnant of him, and that’s part of why he killed Clarriss when he was done with him? It’s not like Zoom didn’t pull the same move with killing his remnant, and this show loves its parallels.

12. (Grown up) Sara Diggle

Barry erased her existence from the timeline. If I were her, I would want revenge too. Obviously not likely, but damn does he deserve this coming back to bite him.

Dear Skamily,

This is going to be long, sappy and generally weird, but I needed to say it.

Since this season, and with it the whole show, is coming to an end in less than 24 hours I want to say thank you.

I began participating in this fandom on tumblr sometime during january or february this year, after finishing all three of the already existing seasons, and my first impression was that you were a small and cozy fandom filled with creative, talented and nice people. I saw amazing fanfiction, drabbles, gifsets and edits everywhere, and I still do. While there is, of course, a bad half in every fandom, I haven’t seen much of that half in the Skamily. Pretty much all I’ve seen has been kind, smart and talented young people who all somehow happened to fall in love with this little tv show from Norway. And I’m incredibly grateful they did, because through this family I’ve gotten to know many amazing people that I never would have gotten in touch with if the fandom didn’t exist. I’ve learned a lot through the Skamily, and you’ve shown me new ways to view the world, especially when it comes to social justice. You’ve been able to criticize the problematic aspects of Skam no matter how much you love it, but you’ve also always been available for theorizing, discussing both the canon and headcanons, and screaming about shipping and how lovely the actors are in your ask boxes. And I love you for all of this. This season may not have been the ending we hoped for, but you’ve been absolutely wonderful through it all, and I am so, so grateful for that.

Skam has impacted us all in many ways. We’ve seen ourselves in the characters, we’ve been able to relate to their experiences. I personally saw myself coming out to my best friend (and former crush) in the clip where Isak comes out to Jonas. And I know I’m not the only one who feels that way about certain clips and/or characters. That kind of impact is hard to let go of, but letting go of the people you’ve bonded with through that experience is even harder. I hate knowing that the end of Skam as a show will be the beginning of the end of this wonderful fandom, and I hope it will last for at least a couple of years after this. I don’t want it to end, even though discussing already existing canon material is never the same thing as discussing a season while it’s still being updated.

Like I said, there are many amazing people in this fandom, and I’d like to tag some of them.

Firstly, there’s Mikki ( @skamfairy), Ciara ( @littlespooneven ) and Hel ( @evenerikkealene ). You were some of the first Skam blogs I followed and where I went to scream about the show back when I was new to the fandom and didn’t have a Skam blog of my own yet. You’re all lovely people, incredibly nice, and I’m so happy I found your blogs. Ciara; thank you so much for the advice you’ve given me when I’ve come to your inbox with my many problems. You’re so kind and patient. Thank you. And Hel, you’re so kind, seeing you on my dash makes me genuinely happy. And you’re absolutely stunning. I know I’ve already told you so multiple times but I really mean it. Mikki; I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know you a bit better through the Discord chat, and you’re so, so wonderful, cute, brave and funny. The fact that you remembered me still amazes me, to be honest. And I can’t wait to write the mall au with you!

Then there’s @tarjeisandvik, who I somehow managed to (accidentally?) start following before I was actually active in the fandom, but I’m so glad I did. You make some of the most amazing gifsets in the whole fandom, and you provide us all with such great content. There’s also @tiptopevak, who is so, so nice and has been making a timeline of season 4 so the rest of us can easily find it all in one place. Thank you so much for that!

And there’s @monstermonstre, who is a really sweet and smart person who is one of the most aware people I know when it comes to social issues. They’re also responsible for the Skamily chat on Discord, which has been an absolutely incredible experience for me.

Speaking of which, members of the Discord chat; I don’t know all of your tumblr urls, but you’ve all been incredibly important to me. You’ve always been up for discussing clips, theories, headcanons and metas and for getting excited over characters and pairings. But you’ve also been there for me when I’ve needed someone to talk to about sexuality, mental health or just my life in general, and to teach me all about birth control (looking at you Alyssa). As a teenager who doesn’t have any older siblings this has been very important, because sometimes all I need is talking to someone who is older than me but not the age of my parents, and you’ve been that someone to me multiple times. You’ve also been available whenever I’ve just wanted to talk about random things in my life or in the rest of the world, and you’ve taught me a lot about mental illness and islam, among other things, which I’m so, so incredibly grateful for.

Then of course there’s the wonderful people at @skamenglish. I’ve already sent you guys a few asks from my main (geekyyoungblood), but basically; thank you. Without your work this fandom wouldn’t have existed. And there’s @skamwlwnet, giving more attention to the many lovely wlw ships of this fandom. You’re doing holy work; keep it up.

Finally, Skamily, I’m going to say this once again; thank you. Thank you for being one of, if not the most wonderful, supportive, kind, creative, talented, smart and mature fandoms I’ve ever been lucky enough to be a part of. You’ve honestly helped shaping me as a person, and I hope I’ll be able to spend as many more years with you as possible. Alt er love! <3

So Tw 6a wrapped, I'm betting you, like most of us, didn't watch. But based off what you've seen around Tumblr what so you think their version of Tabula Rasa? ;)

Haha, I actually did watch it! I don’t think I’m going to continue through the next half though, unless I see some seriously glowing reviews and killer gifsets making the rounds. There’s only so many times I’ll let myself be disappointed by potentially awesome storylines and characters being bungled and butchered, and apparently four years of it is my limit. Better late than never, right?

But what do I think? I think it really showed how much they’ve been leaning on Stiles/DOB more and more, and they had no idea what to do without him there. I mean, he was in three episodes, and the episodes he wasn’t in felt like filler until the next episode he was in.

I think it would’ve been way cooler if they started the season after Stiles had already been taken, so there’s a couple episodes where they just don’t mention him at all, focus on Scott and Lydia and college talks, Scott still really focusing on school, working with Deaton since he wants to be a vet, but maybe struggling with managing the pack. Which makes zero sense because he’s always managed it alone, he should have this down by now, right? This isn’t new, he never had help with this.

But then start having them all do things without realizing it, like Scott keeps mindlessly showing up at an empty locker out of habit until Lydia notices, or Malia buys an extra apple every day at lunch but doesn’t know why, or some shit like that. Hell, bring in Finstock for a quick lacrosse practice and have him yell “Stilinski!” in frustration and then look at his clipboard in confusion before correcting himself. They kind of started doing this, but it only lasted like half an episode

(They do that a lot; they introduce really cool ideas and then get distracted and never take them past a very quick skim on the surface–werewolves in WWII? How do you mention that and never go into how that worked in the Allied armies? Or if werewolves met on the battlefield? Or how hunters factored in? Or if they had their own secret squads, or if Hitler was doing the Red Skull thing and experimenting? You know he would’ve!)

Anyway, start without Stiles, and then bring in flashbacks of him as they find inconsistencies in their memories, or find stuff that was his, and slowly unravel up to the moment he was taken. I think shooting happy scenes where he’s with his friends and dad for them to remember throughout the season would’ve been a much better use of their time with DOB than having him sit in an infinite train station twiddling his thumbs.

Actually, just don’t show where he is at all, it would’ve been so much more threatening if they hadn’t! I stopped being concerned about who got taken because nothing really…happened to them. They sat in a train station indefinitely. Oooo, scary, like I haven’t done that every time I rode Amtrak.

Also doing it like that would’ve taken more of the focus off of Stiles and put it back onto the characters actually on screen and how they react to remembering all these moments, how the world changes around them, how it changes them as people, because like it or not, Stiles does kind of connect everyone together, or at least the core cast. Not so much the Junior Squad, but they shouldn’t be the focus anyway.

Scott should be the focus.

The Teen Wolf.

Who had no discernible arc this season beyond missing Stiles and being Lydia’s muscle while she ran around doing banshee things that somehow still don’t explain what a banshee does in the show.

Also, why show the other banshee with her creepy dead son if Lydia wasn’t also going to have to face a similar situation? I was expecting her to be forced to choose between Stiles or the town, and from there they could’ve written him off the show, or have them continue trying to get him back through the next half, but while still remembering him and actually growing as characters at the same time.

That would’ve been fucking sweet, actually. He’s within reach and then tells Lydia to let him go to save the town, but then the episode ends with Scott looking determined and all, “We’re not losing Stiles again. We’re getting him back.”

Then DOB can go shoot his movies and come back for the final few episodes of the show, and Stiles can be super impressed with the fantastic leader Scott has become while having to stand on his own without his best friend there. And then when they part for college (or both stay in California since the show’s ending anyway!) it would be with Stiles feeling like the town won’t fall apart without him.

That part also bothered me. The season opened with Stiles convinced that they have to solve everything all the time, and that the entire town will burn without them–which it kind of did, he said as much when he got back–to just saying “fuck it, you’ve got it, here’s a car and a bat, peace out.”

This got longer than I intended.

Basically, the season was all around pretty bad, poorly written, didn’t hold together, made zero sense, and also ignored all of the characters on screen in favor of a character twiddling his thumbs in a train station.

Can you do a primer on julien/pl? I'd love to write fic about them, but I just know bits of pieces from your hcs. But they're both so big and soft????

Hey! So when I started writing we’re not here to take part (we’re here to take over), I didn’t think PL/Julien would be more than a one-off pairing that I’d write once for fun, so it’s been thrilling to find that people are interested in them!

So there honestly isn’t much interaction between the two of them, I’m sad to say. They’re friends, and they’ve been teammates a few times, but the part about them together is gonna be fairly short, sorry! I’d love to tell you about them anyway, bc I love them. I’m so sorry for how long this is. This isn’t a primer, this is an essay with pictures.

Happy 20th, Stargate SG-1

I was thinking about whether or not I should write something, or if I should simply keep on reblogging amazing gifsets and tributes for a little while before going to bed and calling it a day.

But it kept nagging me, and I can’t stand the thought of letting this go without at least having said something. Can’t let this day just slip by.

Of course I had to write something.

It’s not every day one of your favorite shows turns 20.

It’s hard for me to pick an absolute favorite show, but I think I’ve got it down to two. Doctor Who is pretty obvious, and most people I know wouldn’t be surprised. I think Stargate SG-1 would actually be a bit weirder for them to hear. But it’s the truth. This gem of a science-fiction action series is one of my favorite shows of all time.

I don’t remember when I first started to watch Stargate. It’s one of those shows that was always on tv when I was a child. Or at least it feels like that (it still does. Literally every time I turn on the right channel, it’s there). I’m 21, so I wasn’t there from its inception. But my dad was. And he LOVES Stargate.

I actually think that he showed me the movie first. We both share a love of science fiction (I probably got it from him), and I remember seeing that very very early (we’re talking maybe 6 or 7 years old). I think the subtitle was Danish.

Anyway, my dad usually sat watching reruns, or occasionally the new season, of Stargate SG1 late in the evenings in our living room. I don’t remember why, but I started sneaking down, hiding behind a bookcase, and trying to watch the show along with him. Of course, I was soon discovered, and he asked me to watch it with him.

It became a Thing. Every other night, I would go down, make some sandwiches (and sometimes there’d be candy!) and pour a glass of milk and sit down in the sofa and watch Stargate SG1. I didn’t really watch it chronologically at first. I popped in whenever I was at my dad’s place and he’d explain to me if anything important had happened. The only moment out of these that I remember clearly enough was when I one day asked “Wait, what happened to Daniel? Who’s the new guy?” and found out that Daniel had died a few episodes prior. My heart was crushed! (I warmed to Jonas though).

Of course, he came back. Because Daniel always comes back. (Lucky me, to finally find a favorite who always comes back.)

(Seriously though, Daniel was my first fictional crush. Which I’ve never gotten over.)

After a while, my dad started buying the DVDs, and we instead sat down and watched the show chronologically, which I’ve done many times over since. On my own, trying to get friends into it, trying to get my sister to watch it (which took time), etc. We also started watching Stargate Atlantis together, which was on tv on Fridays. Sci-fi Fridays. Even if I later have watched the show over and over, it was still Our Thing.

Which might seem odd to many, but it was very important to me. I’ve had a bit of a complicated relationship with my dad, to say the least. Sometimes I doubt if he’s capable of having an uncomplicated relationship with people (than again, who can do that?). But anyway, those Stargate evenings were, most of the time, a break from that. From arguments, from awkwardness, from temper tantrums. They were just there. And that was so important to me.

Now I’ve talked about one aspect of why this show is my favorite, and it’s a highly subjective reason at that. But it’s one reason of many, even if its very personally important.

I grew up with this show, and through that, I’ve grown up with these characters. More than any other show I’ve ever watched, it feels like I know these characters. They do feel like friends to me, as clichéd as that sounds. Friends and family. Their journeys, friendships and struggles means so much to me, because I’ve connected to them all throughout my life. And I think there are some absolutely wonderful characters on this show.

I think Stargate sets itself apart from other similar sci-fi shows. I mean, it’s not the most diverse (though Sam is an AMAZING female character for this sort of thing). It’s not always the most well-written. But it has such heart. It’s a militaristic show, sure, but at its heart, it’s about friendship and family and learning. It’s a militaristic sci-fi show that has such high hopes for humanity, and for the cooperation between peoples and species. Daniel’s idealism is treated as naive sometimes, but it’s also treated as exactly that - ideal. It has a core message that’s about being kind, about how humanity can learn new things, search for knowledge, and that it is what sets us apart. I love those kind of uplifting stories. And the actors and crew members behind this show put so much effort into it, and it shows. Sam Carter wouldn’t be half the amazing character she is without Amanda Tapping. Teal’c wouldn’t have his charm without Chris Judge.

And of course, the show doesn’t take itself seriously at all. I mean, yes, it can get serious, that’s not what I meant. But it has no problem mocking itself, making fun of itself, playing with expected tropes, playing with stereotypes. It knows so well how to have fun with what it is. It’s self-aware. It wants to make you laugh and it succeeds because they’re laughing along with you. And when it gets serious, you know its because they’ve really earned it. O’Neill has made me laugh and O’Neill has made me cry, and it always felt just as genuin.

It’s not perfect, but in the end, it does what I think sci-fi does best, and that’s trying to tell us something about ourselves. It told me many things about myself, I know that. And it spawned wonderful spin-offs and audio dramas and books and comics and a fanbase that’s still going strong ten years after the show’s cancellation. Fans who are amazing and kind and who get such a warm welcome from the fantastic actors behind it.

So, this has been my rambling about why this silly 10 season sci-fi show means so much to me, and yet I feel like I haven’t been able to say even half of the reasons it matters to me. Gotta save that for another time then. I’ve gotten enough sappiness for today. But I can’t help it, I love this show. I love the fans. I love the actors and the spin-offs (don’t know what to think about Origins yet, unsure about the era, but I’m excited for new Stargate stuff, always!).

Got to finish of by saying that my heart has probably never beat as fast as those two days about a year apart when I got to talk to two of those actors who’s meant so much to me throughout my life, and my face has probably never been so red and I’ve probably never mumbled and rambled as much. But they were super graceful and amazing people, dealing with me, and I love them all the more for it. (My face is just a huge smile in these pictures and it looks WEIRD but I have to deal with it and I will still treasure them SO MUCH)

Thank you, Stargate SG-1. Happy 20th anniversary.

“I’m not going to swear an oath I can’t uphold. Talk about my father if you want, tell me that’s the attitude that got him killed. But when enough people make false promises, words stop meaning anything. Then there are no more answers, only better and better lies. And lies won’t help us in this fight.“ ---- This is from 07x07 when he openly told Cersei he swore an oath to Dany (or something like that). I found this quote in a gifset on my dash, and it really confused me. (1)

(2) How could this quote play into the Undercover Jon theory?

Thanks so much for the ask!  Just to clarify the perspective from which I’m answering your question, I believe that by the time Jon said this to Cersei during the Dragonpit scene, he had started misleading Daenerys about the extent of his loyalty to and affections for her.  At the end of episode 6, his attitude toward her turned on a dime from frustrated, annoyed, and relieved to leave her behind (“With all due respect, Your Grace, I’m a king. I don’t need your permission to leave.”) to loving, apologetic, and attentive (“Dany,” “My Queen,” “I’d bend the knee, but…”).  I have to believe that was deliberate.  Jon had just witnessed the scope of the havoc the dragons could wreak, and he wanted to ensure that their wrath would be directed against the White Walkers, not against the North and his family.  Daenerys’s mercurial behavior and very untrustworthy temper made him prone to question any assurance she made that she would help him, especially an assurance made at the height of emotion, so he decided at that point (in my opinion) to use Daenerys’s affections for him to ensure her loyalty, hence his fawning behavior in the ship’s cabin.  His primary motivation is and always has been to defeat the White Walkers; but after the wight hunt, he became convinced that to do that he would need Daenerys and her surviving dragons on his side.  He’ll do almost anything to achieve the second purpose, since it directly serves the first.  Therefore, he’s more than willing to tell her whatever she wants to hear, even if he doesn’t trust, love, or admire her as claims he does.

Cue the Dragonpit scene.  When Cersei gives Jon and Daenerys the terms of her truce, he has two choices:
