Patton smiled as he slipped out of his apartment, using the fire escape to take him to the roof.
“Show Stopper!” He cheered seeing his superpowered companion waiting for him on the roof, “Sorry I’m late I was taking a bit of a cat nap!”
Roman groans and shook his head, “I still do not get why you dressed as a cat when your powers aren’t related to animals.”
“I like cats!” He grinned spreading his arms in a playful manner, “So are we on fur brunch tomorrow?”
“Of course,” he pauses, “but I do hope you won’t bring your puns.”
“No purromises!” He grins, “So where’s Brain Storm? He is meeting us tonight right?”
“Yes!” Calls a voice from behind Patton, causing him to turn, “Sorry I’m late.”
Logan reaches their roof, looking slightly ruffled.
“Are you okay?” questions Roman, coming closer to check on him.
“Yes, yes,” dismisses the blue and black clad hero, “Sorry there was a mugger on my way over here and I couldn’t just let him go.”
“So I take it you weren’t home then?” Ask Patton, coming over to his still recovering teammate.
“No I was finishing up a paper and lost track of time. I changed before leaving the campus.”
“So what I’m hearing is you didn’t eat anything before coming out here.” States Patton, examining the paws on his finger-less gloves.
“I actually thought of that,” grins Logan, pulling a granola bar out of his utility belt.
“You are such a nerd,” laughs Roman, shaking his head, “Let’s go we are wasting moonlight!”
“How are we wasting moon lig- Hey don’t leave me!” Shouts Logan as he starts running after his two laughing friends.
Virgil groaned as another fist met with his stomach, hearing a hissed too slow from whatever asshole resided in his head. He knows realistically it’s his own voice, but that doesn’t mean he likes it, it just-
All the air is knocked out of him again, and his vision swims. He knows he needs to get out of this, it would be easy, but his head is swimming and focusing on one specific place is really hard, and besides does he really want to get out of it?
“Hey!” He hears shouted, making his ears ring, “No one picks on my baby brother but us!”
Oh shit, his brothers. “You done fucked up,” he muttered to his assailant, right before they get tackled off of him.
“What did I tell you about running off Runt?” implores Devin, helping him up, “Why didn’t you get away?”
Because I didn’t want to, an unhelpful part of his mind supplies, “He caught me off guard, I didn’t think to get him off me, I won’t be so stupid next time. ” Yeah, next time you’ll let them succeed in breaking you and let your brothers go on a rampage through the city.
He can hear Aaron finish up with the lesser villain that had attacked him.
“You better not be,” Aaron grumbles, hitting him on the back, “I hate saving your ass. You always put us behind, we have things to do.”
“Thanks guys,” he mutters, ducking his head because it’s expected.
“Just be better,” snaps Aaron, stalking off, “C’mon we have a job to do.”
“Ignore him,” Devin says, wrapping an arm around Virgil to help him follow along, “Alpha’s just in a bad mood cause we lost you and we lost time.”
Virgil nods, accepting his brother’s help. He allows his mind to drift, thinking back to when he couldn’t have his brothers help, back when their dad wasn’t in jail. It had only been about two years ago when Devin started treating him like an asset rather than a liability. It had taken Virgil saving Devin’s life for Aaron to realize he had value. After that they had allowed themselves to love their runt of a brother, he was no longer their dad’s favorite, and he was useful. But, it didn’t stop him from flinching or cowering away from them when they got mad at him.
He knew that ultimately their dad would have to be saved from jail, but a big part of him didn’t want to be around to see it. His dad was horrible, and he knew that, he just didn’t know how to escape this life asides from dying.
“Hey Runt,” asks Devin, nudging him a little, “You aren’t dying or anything are you? You’re normally quiet but not this quiet.”
“‘M good,” he sighs, “Won’t feel it till tomorrow, you know how it works.”
His brother sighed but didn’t press. They both know a side effect of his powers was that after the initial blow most of his pain didn’t come through for hours.
“Will you be able to do the job?” huffs his brother, getting fed up, “You froze, got hurt and now you’re trying to brush it off and it could get us hurt or killed.”
Wouldn’t that be lucky? Taunts the dark part of his mind, “I can do it, if not I will teleport home okay? Stop nagging me,” he says, moving out from underneath his brother’s arm.
“Will you two shut up!” Yells his oldest brother, spinning around on them, “Beta if the Runt couldn’t do it he wouldn’t be here. We are only six jobs away from having the funds to get him into the prison to get dad and neither of you are ruining this! SO shut up and pay attention.”
Virgil hunches his shoulders and nods, not meeting his brother’s eyes.
“Sorry Alpha,” Mutters Devin, going to walk beside him, leaving Virgil following from behind.
It doesn’t take them long to find the building they’re supposed to be stealing from.
“Alright.” Aaron says after they all reach the top of the adjacent building, “Runt do you remember the layout.”
“Yes,” he sighs, gazing over the building from their vantage points, “I will teleport in, get it out within a fifteen minute time frame and then bring it to you and you and Beta will transport it where it needs to go.”
“At least you have a good memory,” mumbles Aaron before he clears his throat, “Almost correct, because of that scuffle you only have ten were the cameras will be down. You know what to do if anything goes wrong?”
“Use the com,” he says, turning around to look at his brothers, “Can I go now?”
“Not so fast!” Cries a red clad hero from across the rooftop.
“Oh not this fucker again,” groans Devin.
“When will you three learn to not commit crimes?” Asks Show Stopper, making his way towards them.
Virgil can feel the hair on his arms raising and he knows something isn’t right, where were Show Stoppers partners?
“Guys? Where-” His question is cut off as someone places their hand over his mouth and yanks him away from his siblings.
He freezes in fear as he realizes him and his attacker had pulled him over the edge of the building, leaving them hanging over the edge.
He hears Aaron scream, “Give him back!” before the terror sets in and Virgil starts to fight weakly against his capture.
“Hey, hey, hey,” he recognizes the voice as Lion Heart, the cat themed hero partner of Show Stopper, “I know you don’t want to fight. Let me get you out of here?”
Virgil stops all movement, signifying he won’t fight anymore.
He squeezes his eyes shut as they start descending the building, Lion Hearts hand moving away from his mouth, “Le-let me.” He stammers out before visualizing the ground.
He hears Lion Heart gasp as they suddenly fall on the ground, “Well isn’t that neat!”
Virgil eyes him warily, feeling kind of weak from teleporting them both down.
He tries to pull his wrist away from the other man, “Aren’t we supposed to be enemies?”
“Yes!” the cat themed hero says cheerily, not loosening the ironclad grip he has on Virgil’s arm, “Which is why I know if I let go you’ll teleport away.”
Virgil narrows his eyes, but stops trying to yank his arm out of the other man’s grasp, “So what now? Take me to jail?”
“Oh no!” cries the flamboyant man, “I know you don’t want to do this.”
“You said that already,” hisses Virgil, looking up at the building anxiously, hoping his brothers are okay.
“Yeah I did! You see I’m an empath, I can read emotions when I touch people, which means I know you don’t wanna do this, and I have to ask before I even think of what to do with you, why do you do what you do if you don’t want to?”
“It’s what I got,” he shrugged, not sure why he was telling this hero about himself, but he felt oddly calm, “My brothers need me, this is all I’ve ever done. What choice do I have?”
“You could be a hero?” ventures Lion Heart, a hopeful look on his face.
“Yeah right,” he says shaking his head, trying to dispel the hope building in his chest, “I’m not a hero.”
“You could be,” repeats Lion Heart before letting go of his wrist, “I can feel the hope in you. But, I think we’ve disrupted you all long enough. I’ll let you go this time, think about what I said. If you wanna come talk I always do a solo paw-trol on Tuesdays! Keep in touch kitten!”
With that the cat-themed hero saunters down the alley chuckling at his own pun, leaving Virgil sitting there shell shocked.
“Di-did he just call me kitten?” mumbles Virgil, before deciding to go find his brothers.
