this book is so good i cried reading it

LGBT book list

Hey! I’m the anonymous who sent you an ask earlier about having an LGBT book list. I don’t have tumblr, hence the message :) So I’ve broken it into two major categories, and tried to include books from as many different genres as possible, so that there’s a wide variety for people to choose from.

Books whose major characters are LGBT and/or have LGBT themes:

Basically anything by David Levithan (YA)

If I Was Your Girl: Meredith Russo (YA)

Symptoms of Being Human: Jeff Garvin (YA)

The Perks of Being a Wallflower: Stephen Chbosky (YA)

Carry On: Rainbow Rowell (YA)

The Art of Being Normal: Lisa Williamson (YA)

Gena/Finn, Not Otherwise Specified: Hannah Moskowitz (YA)

This is Where it Ends: Marieke Nijkamp (YA)

Tonight the Streets Are Ours: Leila Sales (YA)

The books in this part of the list have characters that are LGBT, but play only minor roles, or you don’t know about it until late in the book etc.

Okay, I think that’s all I have for now, though I know I am missing a lot of books. This is a good start though for people looking for something to read. I’ve read all of these except for the last list, so any questions or recommendations, I am happy to provide. Also, I’m always up for chatting with a fellow johnlocker. The only friend I have who watches Sherlock is firmly in the ‘Sherlock is asexual, but if he loved anyone it would be Molly’ camp >_< Anyway, I love your blog. Keep up the great work. Cheers!

Wowee! Thanks for the fabulous list, Kami! I hope this will help out all of my followers looking for some literature!! :)

Eliza Recommends Pt 5

Ah February. The month of love. The month of brilliant fics. The month of omg that was way too short how is it already March?! If February actually had a normal amount of days I wouldn’t be late for this, but I digress…

Bucky x Reader

  • Barnes’ Books // Series // This series makes me happy and brings me hope. Highly recommend giving it a read.

  • Worth The Wait // Series // Bruh go read it! Be prepared for angst. I cried. Gotta love a good cry tho. Such feels, much talent.

  • Blind Date // Fluff // Laughed so hard my face hurt. I’m still not over it. Secretly hoping for a part two. Not so secretly obsessed with this fic.

@drowsybucky (it won’t let me tag you sorry!)

Steve x Reader

  • This story cracks me up every time I read it so obviously it has to go here.

“Why do we smile? Why do we laugh? Why do we feel alone? Why are we sad and confused? Why do we read poetry? Why do we cry when we see a painting? Why is there a riot in the heart when we love? Why do we feel shame? What is that thing in the pit of your stomach called desire?

The Song Of Achilles, by Madeline Miller. You will cry, you will smile, you’ll cry again, you’ll smile sadly, then you’ll bawl like a baby. Honestly this book is amazing, it’s beautifully written, and it has two incredibly rare things; canonically LGBT main characters and a centaur. READ IT.

The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood. Hahaha imagine a dystopian world where women were seen simply as vessels for babies…wouldn’t that be horrible….sure glad that hasn’t happened…..

The Gospel Of Loki, by Joanne Harris. It’s Loki’s autobiography of how he destroyed the world and was a cheeky handsome little shit. Need I say any more?

Romeo And Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Honestly I’m usually not one to read plays but I loved this. Mercutio is the best minor character ever, and it’s genuinely so beautiful to read (even if you’re not into love stories).

Prince Of Shadows, by Rachel Caine. It follows the same storyline as Romeo and Juliet but it’s from Benvolio’s point of view and it’s so good omg. Also Mercutio is the best minor character ever (did I already mention that?).

Blind Beauty, by KM Peyton. Okay so you know that one girl in your class who was always obsessed with horses? That’s me. I got this book when I was 9 and I still love it 7 years later. Even if you’re not a horse person, you’ll love this book. The main character is a strong independent badass girl who wants to be a jockey, her step dad’s evil, her horse is practically a donkey, and it’s so good. I cried.

Born To Run, by Michael Morpurgo. Technically a kid’s book, I read it when I was 6 and I never forgave any of the people who let me read it because it broke my heart. I still love it tbh.

Not Bad For A Bad Lad, by Michael Morpurgo. Okay it’s another kid’s book, and it’s just a short story, but like I said I was the horse girl and it was my favourite when I was little.

A Tyranny Of Petticoats, by Jessica Spotswood. Do you like short stories? Do you like historical fiction? Do you like badass female leads? Do you like diverse characters? READ THIS BOOK NOW

anonymous asked:

Quick question, how do you make the reader cry?

It varies from person to person, so don’t be disappointed if not enough people are crying! Different things “get” to different people, and that’s something you can’t help.

I will say this. The cheap, 100% successful but I’ll-never-forgive-you way to make me cry is to kill off a pet. The Handmaiden’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is serious and thought-provoking and honestly sad throughout, but the worst part was when one of the characters had to kill the family cat. A cat that loved them and trusted them… I’m tearing up just thinking about it. :(

Other than killing animals, a few things should help out, though…

Form an emotional connection

A lot of times, people cry when someone they care about is hurt. If you help readers form an emotional connection to your characters, it’s a lot more devastating when something tragic happens.

The exact HOW of that connection is more tricky. Your readers have unique tastes when it comes to characters, so making a character that everyone falls in love with is really hard, if not impossible. So don’t stress too much. You can’t force it. If you just focus on building your characters as unique, complex individuals, then the rest will fall into place. Some readers will gravitate toward some characters, and others toward other characters.

Make it unfair, and make your character helpless.

Most readers like having someone to root for. Even if the character stumbles on occasion, when they rise back up, we cheer. But what if they’re beaten down so hard, so brutally, that something breaks inside that character–to the point where they’ll never be the same again? (P.S, this doesn’t have to be a physical “beating”… but just some kind of tragic event)

A lot of people crave that happy ending. They want good to triumph, and evil to fail. It’s justice, it’s karma doing it’s job, it’s what’s “right” and how it should be. So when evil actually wins, it can be tough to swallow.

American movies almost always have that happy ending, at least to some degree–it’s almost expected at this point. But try watching a French drama some time. They can be a LOT more depressing. (In particular, watch “La Haine”… it was so good, and yes, I cried…)

Encourage empathy.

I can’t remember the name of it, but a few years ago I read a book that had me BAWLING only a few chapters in. I cried through basically the entire thing.

Long story short, the character had died and became a guardian angel-type person for one of the living. At the beginning, I didn’t know the character very well yet, but the way he reflected on things was just plain depressing. He made me think about all the people who die young through something unlucky and tragic, and who won’t get to experience all the things they wanted to. He didn’t say it in a self-pitying way, but rather in a reflective and kind of hopeless way that made me think along the same lines as him.

It’s tough to do, but if you can write honestly and openly about serious topics, your reader will take matters seriously and open up in return. It forces them to think about topics that they don’t want to think about. (like mortality)

Other articles about it:

Hope this gives you some ideas! By the way, when a reader tells you that your story made them cry or get a little weepy-eyed… it’s a really wonderful feeling. Writers can be pretty sadistic, huh?

Snuggle [Wonwoo]

more of a drabble right now for this soft, book-loving baby, because I too am a soft book-loving baby and this is why Jeon Wonwoo is my bias

“I don’t think we should light more than this one,” you say as you tilt the candle, holding the lit match to the already charred wick. “I don’t want the apartment to go up in flames for the sake of aesthetic.”

Your boyfriend snorts and you turn, grinning as you watch him shake his head from his perch on the couch. He adjusts the thick-framed glasses on his face, and something in your heart goes soft, the way it always does when Wonwoo wears his glasses instead of contacts – your boyfriend is already devastatingly handsome, but the glasses add a domestic touch that makes him seem so…soft.

Stepping away from the mantle, you approach the couch, snatching your book off the arm before you sit down, curling your legs beneath you. Almost immediately Wonwoo is leaning over to toss a blanket over you, tugging you closer to him. Snuggling into his side, you sigh in contentment.

“Comfortable?” His voice is low, and you lean into him, enjoying the way his arm loops over your shoulder. It isn’t often that he gets to spend any uninterrupted time with you, and even though you’re simply cuddled on the couch with a book, you’re not certain you could be any happier than you are in this moment.

“Absolutely,” you say, “this is perfect.”

Wonwoo hums, head tilting to rest against yours. “Good.”

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet // Becky Chambers

“All you can do, Rosemary - all any of us can do - is work to be something positive instead. That is a choice every sapient must make every day of their life. The universe is what we make of it. It’s up to you to decide what part you will play.”

I’ll skip the screaming that lasted for almost three days after I finished reading and just jump into the review.

This is the type of book that, once read, will spoil all other science fiction for you. It will spoil you, and raise your standards for what the genre can - and should - be. I laughed, I cried, and I tore through the book in three days. I already want to reread it.

*Feel good sci-fi is a rare enough thing these days, and The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet does it so well.
*Excellent world building and excellent, creative alien species that are distinct, unique, and believable.
*Gender, sexual, and racial diversity! And casual acceptance of such! And characters recognizing their prejudices and working to better themselves! This is a kinder universe, and it really shows in these small moments of self-reflective clarity and interspecies relations.
*The book really shines in its structure - like an season arc of an old Star Trek series. It’s made up of smaller, episodic adventures that focus on character interactions and development, a found family on a spaceship traveling the stars together.
*Character-driven plot is one thing, but making all of the characters believable, likeable, and individual is another.

TL:DR The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is everything good science fiction should aspire to be, with likable characters, incredible worldbuilding, and a quick paced plot. There was nothing that I didn’t absolutely love. Highly, highly recommended.

marauders things part 2 ayy 🌚

literally I spent 40 minutes writing some but then tumblr decided to delete them so imma cri so here are some more shitty headcannons that probs don’t make sense but nvm I love doing this lmao 🍍

like so many people asked for a part 2 so here you go, if you haven’t read part one yet it’s somewhere further down my blog (I’m not good at this tumblr thing ok so I don’t know how to link the previous one don’t laugh at me ok) but yano

basically I got the idea for a marauders book shop themed au so I wrote a couples of lines of random drabble and literally could not stop like you cannot expect me not to world build ok so here you go 💩

•when harry makes the quidditch team sirius and James send him a howler which is literally 15 minutes of them both getting really excited like MY SON IS THE YOUNGEST EVER QUIDDITCH PLAYER IN HOGWARTS I AM SO FREAKING PROUD I CANNOT EVEN SAY HI TO PROFFESOR MOONY FOR ME

•sirius, james and peter go to every quidditch match each week without fail and always embarrass the hell out harry every week like OHH HARRY ISNT THAT THAT GINNY GIRL YOU HAVE A CRUSH ON but he is secretly super happy to have such fabulous nerds for his family the tears are real

•jily decide to have another kid but they can’t find the right time to tell Harry so he comes home for the Christmas holidays like wtf mum why r u so huge is that where all my chocolate frogs went

•the baby is born two days before Christmas and it’s a baby girl who they decide to call Florence and the twins are like wtf what is that but everyone else is crying bc she’s so damn cute

•peter is the godfather (remus is the twins’ godfather don’t worry) and Marlene is the godmother and he’s like ayy are we god-married then and she’s just like come over here and kiss me you goofball

•they all have Christmas dinner in the back of the shop and the weasleys and hermoine’s family and the longbottoms come over and Harry is just so damn happy to be with his amazing family and friends that he nearly cries on multiple occasions WHAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE AMIRITE

•he and ginny go into the back room to help wash up and they get stuck under the mistletoe and they kiss at the exact moment that lily and Sirius walk in the door and Sirius is like KEEP IT IN YOUR PANTS HARRY and it’s really awkward but hilarious lmaooo

•they all go caroling around all the nearby houses and it’s just so perfect bc it starts snowing and everyone is so warm and fuzzy inside and love each other so much ummmm brb gonna go cry

•the children go out and have snowball fights around the back of the shop and the adults (not including Sirius and James bc they’re as big a children as any of them and I’ll be damned if they didn’t go out to join in that snowball fight to kick their asses) stay inside drinking cocoa and cooing over Florence bc she’s so cute 💘

idek why this was so Christmas themed when it’s september but yano I’m not complaining 🍍
tell me if you guys want part three ok 👍

Alexander Hamilton x reader

“Y/N there is someone here to see you,” a woman said standing in the door.

You looked up from where you were sitting in your bed and nodded.

“Okay. What’s their name?” you asked. You don’t know many people, so you were surprised that someone would come and see you. Maybe it was part of a program.

“His name is Alexander Hamilton. I’ll send him in,” she said, walking away.

A few minutes later a handsome man walked in, holding a smoothie and a book.

“Good afternoon Y/N. How are you feeling today?” he asked as he sat down in the chair next to your bed.

“I’m fine. I don’t know why I’m here, there’s nothing wrong with me,” you told him as he handed you the smoothie that he had brought.

“I brought this for you,” he told you as you took a drink.

“Oh! It’s mango! My favorite, how did you know?” you asked him smiling, as the flavor hit your tongue.

He looked at you almost sadly.

“I just got a lucky guess, I think,” he told you, giving you a forced smile.

“So what are we going to do?” you asked him.

He brought out the book that he had been carrying when he came in.

“I was going to read to you, if you’d like. I brought this book with me today,” he told you smiling.

You nodded your head vigorously.

“Yes please. I love books and stories,” you told him. He gave you a smile and opened the book.

He seemed to hesitate before starting the reading.

“It had been an extremely windy day when a special girl ran down the streets of her hometown. She had been late to work that day, and her boss was impatient. Then, because she hadn’t been looking, she crashed into a man with dark hair, who was running in the opposite direction of her.

‘Oh my goodness! I’m so sorry about that!’ she cried to the man, almost looking like she was going to cry.

The man had been dazzled by her beauty. She was one of the most beautiful people that he had ever seen, despite being a mess from her rush to work.

‘It’s quite alright. Don’t worry about it, it was entirely my fault.’ he told her.

She gave him a smile and picked up her things.

‘I’m going to be late for work. I’m very sorry again!’ she yelled behind her as she took off.”

“What an interesting way to meet,” you told Alexander. He chuckled and continued.

“That was the first time that the sleepy man meet the love of his life. They ended up bumping into each other a lot more often, and after that they decided to just exchange phone numbers and go out on a date.

One date lead to another and they got married three years later.

They were very happy, they loved each other with their entire beings. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, they supposed.

The wife was in a horrible car accident.”

“What! Oh no!” you cried sadly. How could something like that happen to them! They were so happy together, everything was going right for once.

Alexander gave a bittersweet smile and cleared his throat.

“I think that’s enough for today,” he told you as he picked up his stuff.

“But we didn’t finish the story,” you pouted. He laughed again.

“I’ll try and come back and finish it tomorrow. Does that sound good?”

You nodded eagerly, excited for what would come tomorrow.

“Okay I’ll be back. But you have to remember where we left off okay? Otherwise we’ll have to start all over again,” he told you. You nodded again and he looked back at you once more, before taking off down the hallway.

You didn’t see the tears that were dripping down his face.

“Y/N there is someone here to see you,” a young doctor said from the door.

You looked up from where you were sitting in your bed and nodded.

“Okay. What’s their name?” you asked. You don’t know many people, so you were surprised that someone would come and see you. Maybe it was part of a program.

“His name is Alexander Hamilton. I’ll send him in,” the young doctor said as he walked away.

A few minutes later a handsome man walked in, holding a smoothie and a book.

“Good afternoon Y/N. Would you like to hear a story?”

anonymous asked:

4,7,8,10,13,29,32,31,14,20,27,28 Kentin and Armin uwu

(Sorry for lack of posts recently, I’m dealing with some pretty screwed up drama right now and I’ve been in such a bad mood the past four days omg. Anyway, I added a few numbers for Kentin because some other anons requested a few numbers that weren’t listed so why not kill two birds with one stone right?)

2: If they like reading, and if so their fave book

He doesn’t read often because it’s hard for him to find a book that he really likes. But he does have a favorite, and that would be Gregor the Overlander, the main character is inspiring to him. (guys seriously read the book it’s so amazing omg it’s got like 5 parts and I cried it’s by Suzanne Collins so if you liked the Hunger Games you’ll love this even more in my opinion)

4: Their favorite way to waste time

Kentin likes to either work out or bake. If he has absolutely nothing to do he goes for a run, and if that’s not possible he likes to bake cookies, brownies, cake, etc. He’s also fairly good at decorating cakes!

5: Their favorite type of music

He likes soft music like this, and sometimes he’ll am to the occasional pop song.

7: Their happiest memory

His favorite memory is from military school, he made a really good friend while he was there and they bonded like no other. They kept each other going through all of it and they were there for each other when no one else was. This is his happiest because he finally made a friend that he didn’t feel like was only there because they pitied him or anything.

8: Their most embarrassing moment

In the game it’s mentioned that he got bullied before, so back in middle school or something he got his pants pulled down in front of everybody by this jerk that was constantly pestering him. He’s still planning his revenge.

10: Their best childhood memory

When he was little his dad used to carry him around on his shoulders all the time and run around the house. His dad would also let him put on his military clothes, and he would teach him some cool fighting moves.

13: Their biggest regret

His biggest regret is letting other people take advantage of him and taking what others say too seriously. He still has problems with this but it was really bad before and he just wants to let people know they can just run him over anymore

14. Their biggest fear

The boy is afraid of heights y’all.

16. Their calming techniques

When he’s really nervous about something he likes to isolate himself from everyone else and sit down, taking really deep breaths. He counts to 3 in between every intake. When he’s really pissed off this doesn’t work well so he goes to a gym and finds a punching bag, or he goes for a really long run.

17. How they cope with nightmares

He doesn’t really do anything to make himself feel better, he just kind of lays there and stares at the ceiling until sleep takes over again but if it was that bad then if he can he might just go for a walk, even though it’s like 3 AM

20. If they collect things, if so what

I don’t see Kentin being a collector of anything but if he did he might have been one of those kids that try to collect all the boy scout badges (he was in boy scouts you can’t tell me otherwise)

27. How they sleep

He’s a very touchy person if that makes sense, so he needs to be holding on to something. If you’re with him then he likes to hold you in his arms and spoon, or lay his head on your chest like he’s a little kid. If he’s alone he has a pillow next to him and holds onto that with one arm, while his legs are sprawled out.

28. How they hug

His hugs a very warm and affectionate, no matter who you are. He doesn’t just hug anyone so when he does, it’s the nicest, cuddliest hug ever. He wraps you up in his arms and hold you tight, with his chin at the top of your head. If you’re just a friend, he does the same thing but he doesn’t do the chin thing and he doesn’t hug you as tightly.

29. How they express love

Did this in a previous post~ here.

31: If they found out they only had one day to live

He would spend it with Candy, and his family. And just try his best to keep them in high spirits. Later he’d like make an announcement to anyone who bullied him and tell them off like he’s always wanted to do, letting them know that he’s better than all of them. (I really dislike this number it’s so hard to come up with things for it omg)

32. If they were faced with a genie what they’d use their three wishes for and why

Wish 1. To become more confident in himself, because he hates how insecure he is

Wish 2. To be successful, all he wants to do is live a happy and stable life, and he wants his dad to be proud of him no matter what he chooses to become.

Wish 3. The formula for Nutella, he loves that stuff man.

(I just don’t see him wishing for materialistic things tbh)

4. Their favourite way to waste time

If he’s not playing video games of course, he really finds joy in taking those stupid Quotev quizzes, like “Which character are you?” and he likes making quizzes for the games he plays.

7. Happiest memory

You know what I have no freaking idea man…. I would say when he was adopted but we don’t even know the full story behind that sooo. And that’s also pretty basic… I’ll edit this part later if I think of something

8. Most embarrassing moment

Okay you know what, I didn’t intend for this to be NSFW so sorry if this isn’t what you wanted to read but I whole-heartedly believe that he has been caught more than once jacking it off to some porn site by his mother or brother. His dad just knows to knock from now on but the other two don’t listen.

10. Their best childhood memory

When he was younger he and his brother used to pull pranks on people and switch places. I headcanon Alexy has naturally black hair so this was before he decided dye it, and no one really paid attention to their eye color until their mom found out what they were doing and called them out on their bullshit.

13. Their biggest regret

Hmm, well I don’t really know honestly. Maybe he regrets not going out as much as he should have. They never really spoke about their school before they arrived to Sweet Amoris (or did they, I can’t remember) so maybe he didn’t really have a lot of close friends since he’s like, low-key an introvert? So he just wishes he go out there more I guess.

14. Biggest fear

Low-key afraid of bugs but would never admit it. Also really afraid of losing his twin, I feel like they had separation anxiety when they were younger (me and my younger sis had that too omfg I used to cry whenever she wasn’t with me)

20. If they collect things, if so what?

He likes to collect figurines of characters for his games and shows. He’s probably a walking dead fan so he has all the figures of almost every character.

27. How they sleep

He’s always sprawled out all over his bed, lying on his stomach but occasionally his back. Don’t expect him to cuddle with you all night because he gets extremely hot while he’s sleeping so the most he’ll do is putting his leg on top of yours. He also cannot sleep without a blanket, so if it’s hot he’s the “one leg out” kind of guy.

28. How they hug

His hugs are very tight and welcoming, they make you feel comfortable because it’s just so nice. He kind of lifts you off your feet a little bit just because. They are also unexpected sometimes, like he’ll just run up on you screaming your name and tackle you with a bear hug

29. did this already for all guys~

31.If they only had one day to live how would they spend it?

He would spend the day with his family and really close friends and wouldn’t complain one bit if they forced him to go outside. He’d actually want to go out somewhere this time, to make them happy. He wants to let them know how much he loves them all. “Alexy, I know you hate my clothes but I’m leaving my wardrobe to you, you’ll make good use out of it.” He’d probably try to drag everyone to a comic con if he could.

32. Genie, what would they wish for and why.

Wish 1. To be a professional game tester, because that’s what he does all day anyway so why not make money off of it?

Wish 2. For his brother to become whatever the heck it is he wants to be, he wants his bro to be happy y’all.

Wish 3. For all other kids who are currently in foster care or anything to find really amazing parents who love them no matter what, so they can be happy

So I finished 13 Reasons Why and it was so good, like I’m always apprehensive to watch shows to do with that subject but this was so well done and I loved it! Haven’t cried at a TV show in a long time😭
Even if you haven’t read the book, I would definitely go and watch it!

little things to love about wonwoo
  • middle school dancing machine LMAO

An analysis of the scene in EoS when Aelin hits Manon

I want to talk about the scene in EoS when Aelin hits Manon. I’m starting with the myth of the White Demon/Blackbeak Heir because a brief analysis of Manon’s character will be helpful to understanding why Manon did not fight back or retaliate when she was hit (and also why Rowan and Aedion stood by and let it happen).

Trust me when I say that, I could write essays on Manon’s character and why she does the things she does. But for the sake of wanting to discuss the scene where Aelin hits Manon and why Manon does not defend herself, I’m gonna start with a quick and dirty rundown of Manon. And I’m going to leave a LOT out.

TRIGGER WARNING: I’m going to touch on Manon’s abuse at the hands of her grandmother. I’m not going to delve any further than what we can infer from the abuse that is blatantly obvious in the books. I also want to say that @itach-i has an in depth analysis of Manon’s abuse coming out that will fully explain Manon as a character who had been (emotionally, physically, and sexually) abused. I also want to say that without  @itach-i thoughts on Manon’s abuse, this post never would have happened. I knew Manon had been abused, but the extent to which I had not considered until she pointed it out to me. So thanks!

I would like for you to know that I have not cried over a book since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows until I finished If we were villians a few minutes ago. Words cannot fathom how magnificent I think it is, but all I can say is thank you for all the work you put into it, even if it did make me cry.

I’m thrilled to hear you had such a deep reading experience, and I hope that they were good tears. Thank you so much for reading.
