The 7 Elements of a SCENE

There are few things as soul-crushing in the writing process (at least to me) than getting a bunch of characters in a room with the intention of something happening, then the characters proceed to stand around and stare at each other.

Or worse, look at you like this.

My characters didn’t know why they were there. I didn’t know why they were there either. I had no clue what they were supposed to be doing, so I’d start throwing random instructions at them: “Fight, characters! You guys should fight now! Maybe fighting will make this event have a purpose!” Which inevitably resulted in characters going through the motions of battle for no apparent reason, like they had all lost their minds.

What was the problem? I didn’t know how to write a scene. I didn’t know what a scene was. I had a vague definition that it was something about changing scenery, or just “something happening”.

It’s not. And once I learned what a scene was, my characters got to stop pummeling each other, while wishing they could pummel me.

So what is a scene?

The definition of a scene is kind of like the definition of a story. Story is change, a massive change in the life of your main character. A scene is change too, but much smaller, and part of that huge story change. You couldn’t have the BIG change without these tiny changes. Thus, a scene is not switching scenery. It’s not flipping to a new Character’s POV. It’s one segment of change, which triggers the next change, which triggers the next, which gradually build into sequences, which build into Acts, which build into story.

So what goes into a scene? How does it work?

1. Alternating Charges

If a scene opens positive, it will turn negative by the end. If it opens negative, it will end positive. Simple.

2. Character Goals

Everybody in a scene wants something. If they don’t want anything, they shouldn’t be in the scene. And these characters, with their often opposing goals, are going to employ different tactics on each other to get what they want. Which creates …

3. Escalating Conflict

Conflict is created when one character wants one thing and another wants something else, right? So the characters in the scene are each pushing for something different, each new tactic increasing in determination. And what are these actions called?

4. Beats

The beats of a scene are exchanges of action and reaction. One character does something, another character reacts. All exchanges (beats) are pushing the scene onward, building tension and conflict, until finally …

5. Turns & Revelations

The scene turns. The positive has changed to negative. Something has been discovered. The story has spun in a new direction.

6. Connection to Story Objective

Every scene must be connected to the BIG goal of the story, the main character is taking small actions to reach that big goal. If it isn’t obviously connected to this big plot, it won’t make sense. Your reader won’t know why the heck they’re reading the scene. Which brings us to …

7. Logic & Necessity

Every scene must be necessary. It must be able to be linked with the previous scene. “Because that happened in the previous scene, THIS must happen in this scene.”

So! To see how that all works, let’s break down a scene from Tangled. (Because I used it in the last post to map out how a premise works, and my little writer heart can’t resist symmetry.)

Which scene? The one right after this happens:

Opening Charge: Positive. She’s realized everything.

Rapunzel’s Goal: Rise up against her mother – finally.

Gothel’s Goal: Regain control.

Escalating Conflict: They’re fighting over who controls Rapunzel, and this battle causes them to go from “mother and daughter” to “enemies”. The conflict builds nicely in this scene, causing the story turn.

Connection to Story Objective: Throughout the movie, the big thing Rapunzel wants is freedom, she wants her life to begin, she wants to have a new dream. This is the moment she figures out how to do that; it’s not escaping the tower, it’s escaping Gothel’s control over her.

So! Here’s the scene.

Beat 1

“Rapunzel? Rapunzel, what’s going on up there?”

Ignores her. Still processing the tremendous implications of this revelation.

Beat 2

“Are you alright?"

"I’m the lost princess.” (Dumbfounded. Almost whispering it to herself.)

Beat 3

“Oh, please speak up Rapunzel! You know how I hate the mumbling.” (Bullying.)

“I am the lost princess! Aren’t I?” (Fighting back. She will not be bullied anymore.)

Beat 4

Gothel stares, stunned. She’s rendered temporarily speechless, because her secret’s been revealed finally, and her victim is actually fighting against her.

“Did I mumble, Mother? Or should I even call you that?” (Accusing. Drawing herself up taller. Looking down on Gothel and glaring. She’s seeing her clearly for the first time in her life.)

Beat 5

After a pause, thinking up a tactic. “Oh, Rapunzel, do you even hear yourself? How could you ask such a ridiculous question?” (Laughs. Ridicules. Attempts to make her feel childish, dumb, worthy of being mocked. Tactics which have always worked. She even begins to hug her.)

Rapunzel pushes her. “It was you! It was all you!” (Still accusing and angry, but pain is beginning to show. It’s almost like she’s giving her a chance to explain herself.)

Beat 6

“Everything I did was to protect you.” (And Gothel doesn’t say anything redeeming. She’s holier than thou, regal, bestowing kindness on an ungrateful, stupid child. Trying to control through guilt.)

Rapunzel rams her out of the way.

Beat 7

“Rapunzel!” (Shouting. Now trying anger.)

“I’ve spent my entire life hiding from people who would use me for my power …” (Leaves her.)

Beat 8

"Rapunzel!” (Still trying the anger angle.)

“But I should have been hiding from you.” (Throwing the truth at her.)

Beat 9

“Where will you go? He won’t be there for you.” (She’s tried everything else. It’s time to attack her heart.)

“What did you do to him?” (Fear)

Beat 10

“That criminal is to be hanged for his crimes.” (She’s keeping up the disapproving mother act, but striking her right where it will hurt her most.)

“No.” (She’s stopped. Shrinking in on herself. Staring, horrified. And Gothel thinks she’s won.)

Beat 11

“Now, now.  It’s alright. Listen to me. All of this is as it should be.” She goes to pat Rapunzel’s head, a gesture symbolic of her superiority, her physical, mental, and emotional control over her victim.

Rapunzel grabs Gothel’s wrist. “No! You were wrong about the world. And you were wrong about me! And I will never let you use my hair again!"

Beat 12

Gothel wrenches free, stumbling backwards in shock and anger, breaking the mirror in the process.

Rapunzel walks away. She’s escaped Gothel emotionally now.

Beat 13

"You want me to be the bad guy? Fine. Now I’m the bad guy.” (Well, now emotional control is over. It’s time to start stabbing Rapunzel’s boyfriend.)

This action has no reaction, interestingly. It leaves us hanging, a cliffhanger created with only beats.

Closing Charge: Negative. She’s now a full-fledged villain, the motherly persona shed, and she’s determined to get what she wants whatever the cost.

Turn: It changed from positive to negative,  and now we’ve got a Flynn-stabbing witch to deal with.

Revelation: She’s always been evil. She has always been the bad guy. The motherly act was just that, an act.

Logic & Necessity: This scene fits with the previous scene, and the one that follows.

Though I’ve seen these concepts in many books, the place I first learned about it (and the best resource for scene design in my opinion) is the book Story by Robert McKee. It’s helped me countless times, is one of my favorite books on storytelling, and I highly recommend it if you write anything.

I realize that these definitions were a little vague, so I’ll be explaining things more thoroughly in subsequent posts.

Things I love about each type!! based on multiple personal experiences

ENFJ love: You genuinely care about your family. You’re softies. You have a way of making everyone listen to you and believe you, no matter what. That inspires an inner leader in me, well done. You’re usually great at making friends and meeting new people.

ENFP love: You are energetic when around people you like, which is almost all the time. I see you have a longing to deeply connect with people. You are attracted to people that you want to be, or have qualities you wish you had. You are intelligent, so stop acting dumb. My time spent with you is never wasted, I always learn something, and feel loved. Thanks for the brilliant and accurate compliments btw.

ENTJ love: You are strong. I can say evil and inappropriate things in front of you that would be considered socially strange and you either add on to it or laugh, rather than calling the police or my therapist. You are passionate. You secretly want people to like you instead of just follow you.

ENTP love: We don’t have conversations, we have discussions. It’s beautiful. I’ve never heard you engage in small talk. Your emotions are intense. I love how all you do is argue and debate and invent. I need you in my life.

ESFJ love: You are the most loyal and caring people I’ve ever met. You just want to have fun, and make sure everyone else is having fun. You cry openly, but loathe doing it. Despite what you think, people like you, okay? You are likable. Also, learn to turn your back on people who turn their back on you.

ESFP love: Nothing will stop you. NOTHING. Nobody could survive the way you do. You have endless energy and love. You are deeper than the internet says. You people have inspiring messages, and you’re never done saying yes. Everyone knows your name.

ESTJ love: You’re bluntness inspires me. You are true to yourself. You won’t let things get you down. You are trustworthy. You don’t care about popular society norms. You are crazy and hilarious, your quotes are memorable. Fabulous story tellers. Fucking brave, ruthless, and metal as fuck.

ESTP love: The perfect amount of sadistic. Reliable and loyal. You are strangely seductive and charming. You know what you want. Decisive.

INFJ love: I want to be more like you. I’ve always been drawn to you people. You are incredibly organised. The definition of saying nothing and thinking about everything. You have a likeness for the strange and for the antique. Old souls.

INFP love: Attracted to the fucked up things in the world. Wallow in your own sadness swamp, and don’t want to get me involved. You guys always put others before you. Way too selfless.

INTJ love: The way you think. You make people worried, angry, and laugh without trying. In fact, you have no clue what you do that makes them feel that way. Keep going.

INTP love: You are mental. You have an amazing brain but you don’t train it hard enough. Smarter than people think. Generally funny.

ISFJ love: I love that when you are angry or drunk you guys are always the boss. Great leaders because you see what you’re capable of and cater to people specifically. Will do anything for the people you love, or people who are going through a shitty time.

ISFP love: You live in beautiful spaces. You keep to yourselves. I love that you guys love me. Somehow you see the best in people. You are all secretly emo.

ISTJ love: I actually trust you. If someone tells you something or if you see or hear something you aren’t supposed to, you keep it to yourself even if people hound you for it. A brilliant friend, you won’t lie to them. Interested in things that make you think. Strong moral compass.

ISTP love: Soft, yet hard. Extremely quiet, but when you speak and contribute you make everything better. Problem solvers. Disappears all the time, people don’t question it anymore. Really hard to hate.

“I want to have your baby,” is a particular string of words that is only considered acceptable in a certain number of situations.

Maybe between two lovers getting lost in the moment of their heightened feelings, and somehow the words just slip — that’s probably the most common occurrence of the phrase. Or maybe it’s a night out, alcohol in your system, and the words just sort of spill past your lips to the most ridiculously attractive stranger you’ve ever seen before you can even think to stop them. Even that, can still be considered at least borderline passable usage of the phrase. Hell, even the instance of a teenage girl proclaiming her love for her favorite celebrity with the heavy proclamation is still considered normal for the most part.

These, along with a few far-fetched others, were the only situations you could think of that allowed for the usage of those six words to be passable, yet, here you were, uttering that exact phrase, when you were in absolutely none of them. You weren’t getting caught up in the moment with lust-glazed eyes, you weren’t drunk and spewing nonsense at a bar to some guy, and you most certainly weren’t some star struck teenage girl staring up at her celebrity crush’s poster.

No, you were none of those things.

Instead, you were sitting across from your ex-boyfriend telling him that you wanted to have his baby… Yeah, totally passable usage of the phrase, right?

    • Look at important ideas/vocab
      • Prioritize new vocab because language is most fundamental and important tool in any subject
      • Circle abbreviations and make yourself a key somewhere so you don’t forget what the hell that abbreviations meant
      • Check spelling
    • Rewrite/reorganize notes if necessary
      • Format of ideas is just as important as the concepts themselves, esp. when it comes time for exam review
    • This helps you retain the material so you’ll be ahead next time you walk into class
    • Chance to ID any knowledge gaps that you can ask about for next class
  • Keep up with reading
    • Skim text before lecture or at least main topic sentences
    • Jot down anything don’t understand; if lecture doesn’t clarify, ask the professor
    • After lecture: skim again, outline chapter, make vocab flashcards
    • Highlight similar class and lecture notes
      • will definitely be tested on
    • Review and make study questions
  • Study
    • Disconnect from anything irrelevant to study material: help focus and your GPA
    • Don’t limit studying to the night
      • Study whenever, wherever between classes
        • Variety helps focus and motivation
      • Especially if tired at night and can’t transition between subjects
    • Try to study for a specific subject right before/after the class

The Signs In A Relationship - Extended

Aries: Aries partners are very straight forward, they don’t like playing games, psychologically speaking. When it comes to being playful in the relationship, Aries’ love it! Whether it’s board games, video games, play wrestling that ends in kissing, Aries. Has. To. Win. If they don’t win first time round I can guarantee there will be a round two. Being the first sign, a fire sign no less, debates can get heated but if it’s a debate about something stupid it’s more or less going to end up in an aggressive make out session. Their fiery personality can make them both hard to handle at times and amusingly challenging at others. They love to challenge you, they feel it’s a practical way to help you’s two bond and secure your relationship. Despite the fact that they come across quite headstrong, Aries’ are easy to get riled up which can leave them vulnerable in a way. When angry, Aries’ temper flashes wildly, without warning and is gone as quick as it came. Empathy is not their strong suit but they’ll try their very best when it’s someone they love. They might get a little uncomfortable if you cry in front of them but only because it breaks their heart to see it. Aries’ are all about passion and they love to make their partner smile and laugh. If you’re not giving them the amount of attention or affection they want they can get grouchy until you notice it. All in all, Aries lovers can be hard to handle but an amazing companion to someone who can either cool down their fire or match it.

Taurus: Taurean partners are one of the most steady partners you can get. They like a stable, easy flowing relationship and will do what they can to achieve one. They are incredibly determined and will do what they can to make their relationship as harmonious as possible. Commitment in very important to them and they are very cautious about who they give it to, I mean REALLY cautious about it. Being one of the most sensual signs of the zodiac, Taurus’ fall quickly in lust, even quicker when it’s with someone they truly love. Ruled by Venus, Taurus’ are suckers for romance, whether they show it or not. Candles, romantic dinners, massages etc. appeal to their senses and can break down their emotional barriers. Because they are so committed and ensnared in their relationship, they can get jealous and possessive quite easily. They might not realise it, but it’s because they’re so emotionally invested in their relationships that instincts kick in and they do what they can to keep what’s theirs. When upset, their rage is often compared to that of a bull, their animal. It builds up over time and when released can be lethal. Do. Not. Betray. Their. Trust. They will never let it go and they might find it difficult to trust you again.

Gemini: Gemini’s, like the other air signs desire intellectual stimulation and is quite witty in their charm. Flirting is a game to them and they always win. They can be quite extroverted in their relationship and likes to make it know that you’re together, they’ll take any opportunity to tell their loved ones about you. They can sometimes be caught between being in a good and bad mood, and further more if there is actually something wrong they’ll mostly try to avoid talking about it. Air signs generally find feelings icky and do there best to keep their distance. It’s not anything personal, it’s just one of their principles whether they’re aware of it or not. If you get onto the topic of feelings and emotions, Gems will normally try to talk their way into a different topic or try to make the situation lighter by adding humour or sarcasm, depending on the partner this could be problematic. Gemini’s get bored quite easily and need a partner that’s willing to try new things with them and can give them a constant sense of excitement of some sort. A partner who can intellectually challenge Gemini appeals to them a lot, because they fall in love with peoples minds. They can be quite cunning when it comes to getting what they want, they may not even notice it because it’s their nature but they need someone who can handle this and keep their ass in check before people get hurt. Overall, very much like Aries, Gems can be a handful but they can open doors for you and make you think about things and question yourself, leading to personal development.

Cancer: Cancer’s are naturally the mothers of the zodiac so it’s no surprise that they are one of the most nurturing partners you could have. They will make you chicken soup when your sick and fail at serenading you when you’re sad (probably because you’ll probably end up laughing). This is the sign that will put everything else on hold to care for and ensure the safety of their loved one. They are incredibly intuitive, being able to tell if a person is upset from the slightest gesture. Relationships are very important to Cancer’s and if there’s any disruption it can cause a knock on affect in other areas of their lives. They’re quite sentimental and nostalgic, the type of partners that would keep memorabilia from a first date and cherish it. Cancer’s often find themselves overwhelmed by emotions and can find it almost impossible to make an intellectual decision without letting emotions come into play. This can be problematic and dangerous to both involved in the relationship. Cancerians can be manipulative when they need to be. They are fully aware of their innocent disposition and can use it to their ability when needed. This sign can encourage emotional growth in their partner but needs someone to keep them grounded and help them snap out of it when needed.

Leo: Leo’s are very proud in their relationships and will take any opportunity they can get to show their partner off. One of the most playful signs in the zodiac, these partners guarantee an enthusiastic and spontaneous relationship, they love to surprise. Leo’s look at the world with excitement and love, and just by being in their company, they can show you the most beautiful aspects of the simplest thing. Their optimism and persistence can bring the relationship a long way. They loves to be adored, whether they admit it or not, it lies deep in their soul simply because they have an air of self belief. When alone with their partner, Leo’s are very warm hearted and affectionate. They show you amazing parts of yourself you didn’t even consider because they have an eye for things like that. They recover quickly from set backs so this can be helpful in a compromise based relationship. Leo’s are generally attracted to people with strong personalities, Sometimes Leo’s can be overbearing with their emotions which can leave their partner feeling a little tired but when with someone’s who’s personality can match theirs, they can be handled. Leo’s very rarely change their minds, once they’re set on something - that’s that, but if you can appeal to their emotional side, persuasion is possible, yet still very hard to do. They can sometimes fall victim to false praise in the desire to look good in front of others. With a partner who can match their fire and not take advantage of them, Leo’s love and energy can be harnessed in a positive way.

Virgo: Virgos are one of the most intellectual signs in the zodiac so relationships without mental stimulus won’t last very long. They’re incredibly witty and sarcastic and they use this to be playful with you. A partner who can connect with them intellectually is one that Virgo’s never get bored off. They like to pick peoples brains and to know why you like certain things. Possibly the most organised of the signs, Virgo is able to keep the relationship moving at a steady pace that suits both partners. Virgo’s have a very powerful sex drive although they tend to keep it hidden to those they’re not intimate with and like the other earth signs can be quite sensual. They can be quite tricky when it comes to feeling and emotions. Virgos don’t like feelings because they find them quite messy and often this causes them to feel torn in a relationship, making falling in love bitter sweet for them. They’re very detail oriented and can sometimes nit pick their partner. They can over analyse the relationship and get themselves into a worried state and make them uncomfortable. They don’t like to open up much because if they talk about their feelings it makes them more real after they’ve spent a big amount of time analysing them out of existence. If they open up to you, tread carefully and try not to get too much out of them, they’re opening up to you for a specific reason and if you try to get more, they’ll shut down again and they may never open up to you again. Virgo’s need someone who will connect with them intellectually, provide them with stability, give them space when they need, be there when they want to open up but not push them into it.

Libra: Probably the most idealistic signs when it comes to romantic relationships, Libra’s can sometimes expect too much rom-com scenarios in their relationships but only with the intention of deepening the bond between them and their lover. Libra’s personality was in some way created for love, it is the sign of balance, partnership and judgement. Librans strive to be fair and just in their relationship and desire harmony in their romantic affairs. Libra’s are great at negotiating and can maintain a harmonious atmosphere in the relationship. They are natural flirters but aren’t as crude about it as some of the other signs. They love the idea of love and falling into it which can sometimes leave them vulnerable to those who might play them. Emotionally, like other air signs, they like to step back from feelings apart from when it comes to romantic love. They’re emotions can get intense when dealing with love and although Librans are generally not jealous people, any sort of threat to their relationship can arouse feelings of inadequacy and insecurity. They can sometimes get selfish in their relationship, wanting it to be perfect for them. With the right partner that can roll with their ideas and can be 100% devoted/loyal to them, Libra’s can provide others with a fair, amorous relationship that never gets unromantic.

Scorpio: Scorpio’s are easily the most secretive signs in the zodiac and can be hard to get to know. In public they don’t show much affection other than hand or waist holding, but behind closed doors they can be completely different. Scorpio’s can often feel torn because even though they need an outlet, needing a partner makes Scorpio feel vulnerable and they like to see themselves as emotionally self-sufficient. Dominance and power in a big thing with this sign, they like to be in control of the situation at all times. They never wear their heart on their sleeves. When in a committed relationship they show just how passionate and erotic they are behind their enigmatic exterior. They feel things so deeply in their souls but you may never know unless they choose to let you in - if they do, you should be honoured. They will empathise with your problems internally, normally not letting you know they sometimes feel the same. They expect absolute utmost loyalty and faithfulness as they provide you with nothing less. If you betray or stray from a Scorpio, good luck getting them to trust you again. They never forget or forgive, even if they pretend they do, and it takes forever, if at all, to get their trust back. They can always see into your heart so don’t bother trying to lie to them. Scorpio’s are best know for their out lash - and rightly so! It’s in their nature to use attack as their defence, their partner needs to understand this and be patient with them. They normally lash out because they feel vulnerable on some level. With a partner that can understand their complex emotions and be patient and stable while they figure themselves out, Scorpios can be one of them most of the most compassionate and encouraging partners in the zodiac.

Sagittarius: Sagittarian’s are one of the most freedom-loving signs in the zodiac and can sometimes become uneasy when it comes to settling down. They love new things so sometimes the thought of commitment can be unappealing however, when in love Sagittarius can bring the spice of life to their partner. They love to flirt, and they’re great at it too. While Aries is passionate in their flirting and Leo is playful, Sagittarius’ are incredibly fiery, the type that will challenge you for the hell of it. Travel is a big keyword with Sagittarius’, they can get bored easily and need something (or someone) to keep them on their feet. A very independent sign, they will not take any shit from anyone and will call you out if you’re acting up. They will not tolerate time wasters. Sagittarius’ don’t enjoy thinking about emotions and much less feeling them. They feel that they’re emotions can hinder their ambition and likes to leave them untouched so don’t expect them to frequently get deep into their emotions because chances are they will change the subject on a lighter note. They tend to lie without really noticing it and can sometimes make promises they don’t keep. It’s not that they disregard them purposely, it’s just they might forget in their pursuit of even more new experiences. For this reason, their partner might need to be able to take the things they say with a pinch of salt. With a partner that can keep up the pace and adapt to Sagittarius’ ever changing interests, not drag them down or put pressure on them to commit too soon, Sagittarius’ can show them the world in a whole new light with wondrous opportunity’s.

Capricorn: Like the other earthy signs, Capricorn’s are normally quite reserved in public when with their partner but when alone (varying on how close they are) they can really let loose. They have an unusual sense of humour which can come across as dark to some. When you know them extremely well, you might get the chance to see how much of a wild card Caps can really be. This sign is one of the most reliable in the zodiac and possess incredible strength of character which can handle strong personalities. They’re often described as the “rock” in the relationship, they can keep the other partner grounded without crushing their spirit. They’re very patient when it comes to other and respect their partners wishes as they’d like to be respected in turn. Their relationships tend to last very long and they take their responsibility in the relationship seriously. They have a very cool demeanour until aroused sexually. They tend to be very lusty rather than love-y, because they’re very careful about love. Capricorns panic when they’re not in control of a situation and somewhat lacks the ability to express their emotions properly. When a Capricorn opens up to you, the things they’ll tell you will break your heart and you must treat that information as carefully as you can because it has taken a lot for the Cap to tell you. With a partner that won’t smother them but at the same time commit to the relationship as much as they do, Capricorns can provide a harmonious, steady and fruitful relationship.

Aquarius: Aquarian partners can be very eccentric and hyper when with their partner - in both private and public! This sign will seek equality in the relationship, to be together as a team. They are the sign known for change and growth, this will be the sign that can easily get their relationship to evolve at a healthy pace. This sign values companionship in their romantic relationship, they enjoy the company of those who they can sit with and question society and existence one minute and do the most random, pointless activity with the next simply because it makes them happy. Like the other air signs, Aquarians can some times be idealistic and will try to sneakily get their own way. Although they may seem detached and not very feeling, below the surface lies conflicting, chaotic emotions. For that reason they need stability, especially in a relationship. Intimacy can be awkward for them sometimes because they’re so independent and they find it hard to express the complex emotions they feel despite their verbal intelligence. However they will sit with you and listen to your woes and try to find a solution, they probably won’t delve into their own problems that often and when they do they’ll finish with “but anyway” and then change the subject so to not dwell on them. With an optimistic partner that can respect Aqua’s need for space, can listen to their opinions and not base the whole relationship off of intimacy and physical attraction, Aquarius’ can learn to express themselves and their ideas better and can give their partner a mind opening experience.

Pisces: Pisceans can be tricky when it comes to love, they fall in love with the idea of love like Libras but are wary of it like Scorpios. Incredibly intuitive, they can always tell when their partner is feeling off just by the way they come into the room. They are probably the most understanding sign in the zodiac and won’t push you into talking if you don’t want to (even if it frustrates them a little). When you do decide to talk about it, Pisces’ are excellent listeners and will provide empathy and validation for your feelings. They know how much emotions can affect people, having felt their own so very deeply and make it their priority to take care of their partners emotional needs. Like the air signs, they tend to be infatuated by intellectual stimulus as long as the other person isn’t being snobbish about it. Though they might not show it, words can hurt them a lot and they tend to take things to heart, even if they know it wasn’t intentional. This sign can be prone to guilt and can be manipulated easily enough. However, they’re just as willing to play the game and can manipulate just as well. They adapt to their surroundings a lot so their emotional state in terms of romance can be a reflection on the state of the relationship itself. They tend to drift between merging with their partner and flirting with other possibilities. With a partner who can be patient with them, understand their emotional complexity and keep them grounded whenever they get second thoughts, Pisces’ can lead their partner to inner contentment and show them that if you look hard enough there’s still good left in the world.

PSA about women walking alone at night

Hey, everyone! I was walking home late last night and I just felt like I needed to say some stuff. Yes, it is inspired by true events.

Dudes, let me give you some advice on how to interact with women walking alone late at night. This advice is intended to help you make them feel comfortable and safe from…yeah, you. And also for you to avoid getting your dick kicked into your chest cavity. My females, I’m putting out some tips that I learned from my daddy (who was a cop) that have helped make me feel safer while walking home. (Obviously subject to editing if people have some reliable source they’d like to share that contradicts what I’ve said. It’s about being safe, after all).

My dudes…

If you see a woman walking alone late at night, don’t walk behind her. If you’re going the same way as her, try crossing to the other side of the street, or making it really clear you are not paying any attention to her. If she looks back at you, politely say that you are keeping your distance and wish her a good night. If she stops to let you walk by her, it’s not an insult. It’s for her safety, because she has been trained not to trust men late at night. She is protecting her six, and if you’re a decent guy, you will let her. Don’t ask a woman you see walking late at night for a cigarette, a dollar, or to use her phone. Don’t say shit to her unless it’s to tell her to have a good night and be safe. If you see a woman being harassed, loudly offer to call the police, or just go ahead and do so. Don’t offer to walk her home, because that’s a familiar line and will put her instantly on the defensive. Instead, ask her if you can call her a taxi or contact a friend. If a woman gives you a dirty look when she’s walking home at 2 AM, please don’t call her a bitch. She’s protecting herself, and if you think she has that right, then just take it with an understanding nod, instead of acting like a fucking baby. If you’re a professional driver, don’t follow beside her slowly, like you’re casing her. If she needs a cab, she will make that obvious. If you’re a bouncer, and she is leaving your protection, give her advice on the safest ways to walk. If a woman asks for your help, and you consent to giving it to her, please be respectful of boundaries and make it clear you are not helping her for any reason other than to make sure she is safe.

Women…

Firstly, I know how fucking obnoxious it is to have to tailor your entire life to the sexual urges of predators. I know you just want to say “Screw this” sometimes and go out for a walk because why should you have to stay cooped up? I also know that sometimes, you can’t help it. Sometimes your ride ditches you and you don’t have cab fare. i am not going to lecture you, because you know what you’re doing.

So maybe instead I can give you some things you maybe haven’t thought of before.

1) Take off your high heels. If that grosses you out and you don’t want to carry spare shoes, carry a pair of socks in your purse (or your bra. Come on, they make great hoists) and wear them over your bare feet. I’ve seen those little rubber shoe things too, that look like flats…those are dope.

2) Avoid dark places. Even if it means you have to walk a little out of the way. You need to be able to see everything around your for at least a hundred feet, because a man can clear 100 feet at a dead run, very quickly.

3) Always look around, constantly. Predators want an easy mark, and if you’re paying attention, you cannot be an easy mark.

4) Pass by as many ATM’s as possible and look directly at them. They have continual activity on their cameras, so if you are snatched, the police can document your movements.

5) Only carry cards. If the place you’re going only takes cash, then have a specific amount and no more than that. The idea is to minimize incentives to rob you. If a man approaches you to rob you, and you have nothing to give him, he will likely leave at once, because he is usually nervous and doesn’t want to be identified, so be prepared to empty that bag out on the road and show him you have no valuables.

6) Should you have a weapon? Only if you know how to use them and are willing to do so, otherwise they end up being taken from you and used on you. Long range weapons like pepper spray are better.

7) Don’t talk on your cellphone in the standard way. I know you think that it’s a good idea, but the fact is, it distracts you and holding it can block your line of sight. A man can grab you and smash it and no one can track you. Instead, put it on speaker, tuck it in a pocket, and give constant location updates, if you feel threatened. Or prearrange a text appointment with someone who can call authorities if you don’t reply.

8) No music. Do not be that girl, walking in the dark, with her phone on a loud song to take her mind off the scariness of it. Music draws attention to you and distracts you. It can also mask noises of a confrontation.

9) If a man walks behind you, you have two options. You can put your back to a wall and allow him to pass by you, or you can cross the street. If he follows, find a public place immediately. If this isn’t possible, the fact is, he’s a threat. If it were me, I’d look him right in the eye and make sure he can see that I’m willing to kill. Don’t ignore a threat, and ladies, walking alone at 2 am means every man is a potential threat. Run, if you feel threatened. Who the fuck cares if he isn’t “actually a bad guy” or thinks it’s weird? Just ask yourself, “What if he is a bad guy?”

10) Be willing to drop everything in your hands. If there’s something you don’t want to leave in the street, shove it in your bra or your pocket.

11) There’s a lot of debate about how to deal with an attacker if it does happen. Some say to do what you’re told, and some say to fight like hell. I can’t make that decision for you, but you have to be aware, and try and understand the attacker. Ask questions. If you think they aren’t listening…it’s up to you. Personally, a guy better not try to put his dick in my mouth, because I will bite it the fuck off and see what happens, but thats me. Don’t go with him. If he has a weapon, then he is willing to kill you. So make the choice. If you go with him, you stand a much higher risk of never coming back, because in solitude, with no threat of discovery, he can do whatever he wants. If he wants you to leave where you are, it means that place is safer, so stay in that place.

12) Do learn self defense. If a man can hit you once, he can win. Learn how not to get hit. Learn how to get out of suppression holds. Learn what to do if grabbed from behind.

13) Minimize physical risk. Take off all jewelry, Ponytails are just convenient handles. (I had a friend get grabbed from behind by her ponytail and lifted off the ground, with a knife to her throat. She couldn’t get free because he had all her hair in one hand. Hair is VERY strong. So take your hair down, because if he can only get a handful, you can usually tear free, but if he has all of it, you can’t go anywhere.) Same with loose clothing or clothes with strings. Keys are weapons, rings are weapons. High heeled shoes can kill a man.

14) The cops will not be angry with you if you call them because you feel threatened, and it turns out nothing is wrong. They just won’t. In fact, I can think of at least ten famous cases where a woman called the cops because she was being followed and it turned out the guy was like some horrible rapist or murderer they finally caught.

15) You have the right to defend yourself. Better to be alive and dealing with assault charges than dead in a gutter.

One time I flipped a jogger upside down because he came up behind me really fast while I was walking home from work at midnight. He laid on his back looking up at me like “WTF DID I DO” and I just said to him, “Hey man, I am really sorry, but you scared the shit outta me.” And helped him up.

And you know what? He was totally cool about it. Said he completely understood and asked me what martial art that was. I told him it was Aikido and then offered to pay his cleaning or medical later if he needed it. He shook his head and goes, “No, ma’am, we’re good.” and jogged on.

I’m not telling you that so that you kick every man you see at night in the balls. Men have to walk home at night sometimes, same as us. I’m telling you that because women have been taught they have no right to be fierce. And they absolutely do. It’s better to defend yourself first and ask questions later, to run first and feel silly later, to strip down or button up first and let loose later.

Be safe. Women, be smart. And dudes…don’t take this personally. If you agree that women should be equals, then treat them with respect.

Hey Jude

A/N: This is my really late submission for @percussiongirl2017 ‘s birthday challenge! Hopefully it was worth the wait. I had the prompt, “You can’t tell me how to live my life. You’re not my mother.” & my song is “Hey Jude” – The Beatles. The pairing is Dean x Sister!Reader however there is some Sam in there as well. The reader is the oldest sibling.

Word Count: 2833

Dean x Sister!Reader   Sam x Sister!Reader

“Take care of Sam and Dean.”

That was your motto. You were eight years old when your mother died in the fire that turned your life upside down. You could remember the heat, the fear you felt, and how you had never gripped Dean’s hand or held onto Sammy so tightly then you did that night when you brought them out of the burning house.

Ever since then your father gave you one task, to take care of Sam and Dean. It wasn’t something that was foreign to you; it was something that you had loved helping your mother do. She had always lovingly referred to you as her mini mama because you enjoyed it so much.

So that’s what you did.

Improving your writing

How to Improve your writing

So all of us roleplay here, but how many of you wish to truly improve your skills, gain a better style, learn and drive yourself to be better? I know that’s something I’ve always wanted to do no matter how well I write, I always strive to be better.

One thing to understand is that in roleplaying, there is no end. Even if you meet the end of a thread, it doesn’t end there. There is so much to realize. So in a sense, there is no goal in roleplaying, you are simply here to write and develop. Just like you develop as a person, you are developing your writing AND your character.

Another is to understand that you ARE your character. Let go of yourself, let go of everything you are and dive into your character. Become one with that person, see from there eyes. Don’t take the 3rd person point of view, standing above like god watching his children, join the heart and soul of your character .

How to Write

First and foremost, remember that role playing takes effort, time, and dedication. This shouldn’t, however, make writing any less fun!! But as writers, one thing we are all striving to do is improve, develop, and define our own writing style.

Let’s start with the basics. These are questions and comments you should think about when writing a post.

  • - The time frame. You need to know the date, it will determine what exactly happens to your character and what has happened before.
  • - The Season. This will determine what your character is wearing, what is going on around you, the environment and more.
  • - The Situation. What is going on that day? Is it changing your characters emotions? Could there be conflicts?
  • - The overall attitude. Your characters personality is going to shape how they look. If they are angry, it’s obvious they should appear that way. If they are happy, why are they happy? Write all this in.
  • - The appearance. People can’t read your mind, so state in some way what your character is wearing. How is their hair? Do they have anything odd about them that day?
  • - The Area. Again, people aren’t mind-readers. Describe the area you are in. Is it night or day? Is it wet? is it hot? this goes hand in hand with your season as well.

Please, do not be afraid to get descriptive, get in there, place yourself there and let people see what you have. If you barely give the minimum what you see in your mind the other play can see completely differently.

Do not get this confused with having to write a lot. Word Count is not important. Your beginning post can be pretty lengthy  but do not let this intimidate you. If you give a good basis then the roleplay will become more enticing, allows a story to unfold and you will find yourself addicted to the scene.

Roleplaying Fluidity

So you have reach a point and you don’t know what to do, do you? How do you keep a thread liquidity moving so that you don’t feel stagnant and bored?

  1. Don’t linger in the same spot. This means that you want to reply to what a person has given you but also add a little more to the end. Always go with the Who, What, Where, When, and How. Maybe someone interrupts you? Maybe you move to a new spot and it makes your character think of something? Maybe you find the time is short and suddenly you are late. Always keep a thread moving in some way. This will help you move a thread on for many posts.
  2. Be Flexible. Allow for change, get into things you don’t expect. Don’t be firm on what you think will happen, roleplay is a fluid movement and if you don’t allow yourself to bend then you won’t get anywhere and the post can easily be killed.
  3. Don’t be a dictator. You are not going to control the other person’s character or decisions nor will they to you. Play your character how you see fit for the coming post. So maybe things will end there, or maybe something crazy will happen!
  4. Don’t focus on size. Word counts, the number of paragraphs, this doesn’t mean anything. What is most important is the fact that you give what you receive. If you give very little, do not expect much in return. This is where the effort comes into play. You want to give people something to work with. The more you give the more you receive!
  5. Take a step in their shoes. Become your character. I can’t say this enough, get in their shoes, their body, their mind. Think of all those questions!!! There is so much that can happen within in a five minute period and you should touch base on it all.

I need the FEELS!

You see so many people writing these feelys threads and you want to do one too but you don’t know how?

Feels engulf everything. Happiness, passion, sadness, pain, hurt. These are just a few of those words that can touch on the feelings of people. So how do people cause others to feel such emotions. Like I’ve stated, you must BECOME your character.

Think about these questions. What is their heart saying? What is their mind saying? How do the feel? Are they scared? How are they showing they are scared? Why are they scared? What caused such fear?

These and more will help you develop the emotion and drive of a certain feeling. Dive into the questions, don’t be afraid to think of them and to really feel them.

Connect with your other readers/players. Let them KNOW how you feel. Metaphors and similes make for great ways to connect. Bring to view history that has caused these emotions. Don’t be afraid to get into the meat of the emotions. Just what is drawing out these feelings that could cause such a deep rooted emotion.

But how do I describe?

Description is a major part of the thread, and as I’ve stated above you need it. But just HOW do you describe? The best way to describe anything is to think of the five senses. Many would think this is obvious by thought, but in truth you have to active think on it, not just realize it.

  1. Sight: What are you seeing? What colors, people, trouble,s dangers. This makes up most of what is going on in the roleplay. If you don’t know the set up how can you reply? Set it up.
  2. Hearing: This is probably the second easiest way and usually always in the thread. What do you hear? Any conversations? Fighting? Crying? Is there a crash somewhere. What sounds are around so that someone else can react.
  3. Smell: This is one sense I rarely seen used unless it’s obvious. Think about what is around. The scent of the forest, the smells of the sea, is there food cooking or do you smell something rotten? This will help you better know the role play and what to expect.
  4. Touch: Touch is one that is obvious yet so unused. Just think about everything you touch, from what someone wears to the things around them such as grass and trees. Clothing, armor, there is so much to go about. Uses this sense will make you ‘feel’ it and become more connected to it.
  5. Taste: Taste is probably the hardest sense to try, but if you think about it, you do taste the world around you. It’s not just when eating, but you can also taste things like the dirt in the air, the taste of smog and the stenches. Smell and taste can go hand in hand as your nose is connected to your throat. Expect the detail of the taste.

Be sure to be descriptive, but not OVERLY descriptive. Don’t talk about a flip of your hair for three paragraphs, that’s outrageous. This is known as 'floof’.

Describe the meat, but don’t overcoat it with gravy.

Words, So many words!

Sometimes words and word count can be intimidating. But the beautiful think about this site is there is no demands on how much or how little you can write. This is known as relative word count. You write what you want, but I think it would be respectful to also, like relative word count, to give what you received. This doesn’t mean match word for word, or match count for count.

You should give the quality that you received.

First off, read the post. Don’t think about writing, just read it. Afterward, go back to the top and read the first paragraph and respond to that. Sometimes you can’t respond to the paragraph, and that’s okay. Sometimes when you respond to that paragraph you write two paragraphs. All that matters is that if you can respond, do it.

Ignore how long the post is. Like I said, count isn’t important, its the quality.

When writing, try not to reuse words over and over. Try to expand on them. The thesaurus is a wonderful tool for this. Connect with your audience as well as bring in things they may know.

However, be aware of the word, use the dictionary as well. There is nothing wrong with the word said! or fingers, or anything like that. The theasaurus is a great way to find a variety in a word but you also need to be aware of what that word means. Just because two words are synonoms doesn’t mean they will mean the same thing in your sentence. Don’t be afraid to research up words and expand your plane of knowledge. This is what makes you go from good to excellent.

This is where metaphors and similes are so useful. This allows you to write something that may not actually be in the time period but not expressly state in character.

Being Pro-active, not Re-active.

I GOT A POST!

Awesome! But remember, when you a replying to a thread, you don’t want to just reactive. This style is bad form, being just a reactionary type person. This will definitely kill your thread, causing people to just stare and go 'nope’ cause they have no real reason to reaction.

So what I mean by proactive. You need to actively engage the thread. React to what happens, but push it forward as well. Like I’ve stated above, there are things you should do and reply to, but always give a little nudge at the end of the post.

Now, as it is, I do not mean 'shove’ the thread. This can always kill a thread, sending something so off the wall people are just going to go 'WTF?’.

Don’t be afraid to close the thread if you think its done. You can always start a new thread, a new plotline and more. Some threads can last for only five post, others for twenty, and even more. The joy of roleplaying is you never know what will happen! You don’t have to involve everything in the one thread, so simple react how you need to and move on.

1. TRAVEL ALONE.

Have time to be away from everything. Rediscover your purpose in life by going to places you’ve never been before. Explore new things, experience different cultures, learn new languages and meet different people. Replenish your soul with excitement and exploration. It will create many opportunities for you, and room for improvement and personal growth. Traveling alone will teach you how to become independent and confident.

2. LOOK FOR YOUR TRUE SELF.

This is the perfect time to make your passion your profession. Chase your dreams; follow where your heart wants to go. Do things that make you feel happy. Never settle for good enough, be the best version of yourself. Look for your purpose. Along the way, you will discover things that will clearly define you as a person. Embrace this. And let success flow; everything else will follow.

3. CUT THE CLUTTER.

Choose and keep the right people in your life. Associate with people who you want to be like. You’re not going to imitate them; you will learn from them, grow from them, and discover your true voice. These kinds of people will bring cheerfulness; they will motivate you and remind you that you’re on the right track. Creating a positive environment around you attracts success and it makes your vision clearer. It also creates a healing space that fosters growth that opens a door for opportunity. Everything will become lighter because positivity brings happiness. So never waste a space in your life for a negative vibe.

4. DON’T BE AFRAID TO TAKE RISKS.

If you’re tired of where you are right now, reevaluate your situation. Are you just working to live and survive another day or you want something you will never get tired of doing because you love it? Learn to weigh things around you. Pursue what makes you happy. Risk, in order to see the things on the other side of the bridge. Be brave enough to quit and start anew. Don’t be afraid to stop doing the things that don’t serve your path. Risking redefines your thought processes and it optimizes opportunities. So never be afraid to risk because some of the greatest adventures in your life will come from things you never realized were possible.

5. BALANCE YOUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE.

We only have a 24 hour time period every day, so make every second count. Never waste a moment being unproductive. Master the art of time management. Have time for yourself, to have fun and enjoy things in life. Have time for your family; spend precious moments with people you love. And have time for your professional growth. You have to spend your days wisely.

6. BE GRATEFUL.

Make it a habit of saying “thank you” to people when they do something for you. You don’t know what kind of storm they are experiencing, so become their rainbow. Share your kindest smile. Appreciate them. It looks like a small effort from you, but for them, it completes their day. Never keep positivity within you, share it with everyone you meet.

7. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND CRAZY.

Sometimes, being normal is boring and redundant. You need to stretch out of your comfort zone. Jump, even if you don’t know what lies beyond. Put excitement in your life that you can look back on and laugh hard when you become old.

8. BECOME SOMEONE’S HAPPY PILL.

Drink a shot of happiness every day because the brain works best when you are happy.

9. RENEW YOUR FAITH.

Being an adult means a lot of work and stress. Sometimes, you will lose time and balance for everything, including your personal relationship with God. When things don’t go the way we want to or when all hopes are gone, everything seems to drift away. We keep on questioning and doubting God’s plans for us. Switch it over into praise. Use the situation to rebuild your relationship with Him. God wants you to communicate. The reason why He takes something away from you is because He wants you to discover greater things in store. The best way to renew your faith is to surround yourself with God. Pray a lot.

10. ACCEPT THE FACT THAT THE WORLD IS FILLED WITH HARD TIMES.

Quit complaining. Do not think about things you cannot change. Focus your attention on things you can act upon. Reward yourself when you have done something great. In order to become successful, you must embrace change and motivate yourself. Remember, people won’t love you just because you love them. Think before you commit. Don’t let your thoughts run in your tongue

Summary: After finding Jack, Sam and Dean bring him to the bunker for you to watch him while they are taking care of business.

Words: 1468

Pairing: Jack x Reader

Warnings: None, really. Spoilers for Season 13 at most.

As soon as the Bunker door opened, you looked up. Cleaning and repairing the Bunker while Sam, Dean, and Mary were out to find Castiel and Kelly before Lucifer did. You were sure that “somebody needs to take care of this mess” wasn’t the only reason they wouldn’t let you come along with them.

Dean was the first one to come into view. He looked exhausted, sad. The next person was someone you didn’t know and after him followed Sam. No Mary or Cas.

“Who’s that?” you asked, making all three men look at you, the stranger furrowed his brows.

“Y/N… oh, uh… this is… this is Jack. Lucifer’s son,” Sam explained, trying a smile but you only quirked a brow.

“Lucifer is not my father,” Jack had said, earning a sigh from Dean.

“You’re trying to tell me this grown ass man is Lucifer’s child? Shouldn’t he be a baby?” you only quirked your brow even more.

Bruises On Another (part six)

Prompt: Steve doesn’t know where they come from, and he isn’t exactly sure why they’re there. All he knows is that his body is littered in bruises, and there’s something different about them. They aren’t just bruises, and they certainly didn’t come from a trip in a step or clumsiness. No, Steve knows there’s more behind the marks that litter his body.

THIS IS A SERIES: one - two - three - four - five - six - seven - eight - finale

Pairing: Slow!Burn Steve x Reader, Billy x Reader (it’ll make sense)

Warnings: marks, bruises, pain, physical abuse, force, sexual inclinations, etc. I mean no disrespect to anyone or to upset anyone, this story starts off rough but I can say that things will get better.

A/N: I hope you all enjoy this chapter as much as I enjoyed writing it. Send me a little comment in the ask section or leave it below on what you thought of this chapter. It doesn’t have to be long, I appreciate every single comment I receive and telling me just helps inspire me to write it more frequently.

Oh! And just to be clear, this derives from canon plot. While Nancy still broke up with Steve and the whole Halloween party still happened, the events with the demodog and everything doesn’t- mainly because it wouldn’t fit with how i’d like to take my story. So I hope you all don’t mind.

P.S. This a soulmate AU.

I will NO LONGER be adding anyone to the Tag’s List!

Had you been that obvious? Had everything you’d work so hard to hide been plain as sight to Steve? Not only Steve, but maybe even everyone..?

It felt like the world was closing in on you- ever since this had begun, ever since the abuse had begun and your life was turned upside down you’d made it your goal to never tell anyone. Never let anyone find out. It seemed silly, and you weren’t stupid enough to think this was something you were meant to keep a secret- a father should never hurt his daughter. But your father scared you, everything about him radiated a fear through you that constantly paralyzed you and made you submit.

Whatever he said you followed, no matter what. So when he said never tell anyone, you never did. You’d isolated yourself because of this and you let yourself live in constant turmoil because you were so afraid of your father. And now you found yourself caught in-between lying as you always have or telling the Steve true. Because despite the fear you felt towards your father, there had always been a strong urge to tell someone.

You just wanted someone to trust- someone to help you.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” But of course your father’s eyes were burned in your memory and the power he held behind them would never disappear. You didn’t know what Steve would do if he found out, you didn’t know what would happen if he or anyone else did and that scared you. You bit back the tears that threatened to fall and the words that threatened to spill. Instead you internalized everything you’ve always felt and stared straight into Steve’s eyes, your gaze not wavering. “Seriously, Steve, I have no idea.”

Steve paused and you watched his face fall for a moment. It was almost as if he knew, and Steve just needed you to say the things for it to be confirmed. You’re sure he knew- considering that he held the same bruises that marked your same body and those marks didn’t come from clumsiness. But then suddenly his gaze met yours again and he shook his head; “you didn’t say it.”

“What?”

“You didn’t say your father doesn’t abuse you.” Steve clarified and you felt your heart fall- he wouldn’t give up. “You didn’t answer my question.”

You felt shock run through you and the surprise paralyze any rational thinking. Steve had worked his self around a loophole and you had no idea how to help yourself, because everything he said had been true. You hadn’t answered the question, mainly because you couldn’t. You could lie and work yourself through any tough situation much like this, but you couldn’t utter the words that you weren’t abuse. You’ve never even been able to say it to yourself.

Because you were and you are sure you can’t lie to yourself. Can’t go as far as saying that the things your father did wasn’t abuse.

Your mouth opened and closed, desperate for a answer. You felt your eyes look every-which-way in utter desperation but you found no answer or solution and Steve knew that. “I’m sor- i’m sorry but I can’t-” You moved to turn away, out the door, but Steve caught you before you could. In a midst of panic you fought his grip, desperate to get away- you couldn’t do this. Steve had you so close to the edge, so close to uttering the words you were so afraid of saying and you didn’t know if you’d be able to hold back.

“Let me go!” You screamed out desperately, ignoring the fact that you were still in school. You were blessed at the fact that it was way past the end of the day and anyone who would’ve passed by and seen you in this compromising position would’ve left already. “Steve, please! I can’t- I won’t…”

“What are you so afraid of?” Steve asked aloud and stunning you for a moment, he managed to turn you back around. He wasn’t rough, Steve was nothing like Billy or your father, but he was exactly gentle either as he pressed you against the wall behind you and held you there. You smacked your head against the wall, your eyes crinkling in distress and you felt your heart beat quick. “Y/N, Y/N listen-”

“Please,” you cried, unable to comprehend what he was saying. Your heart was rapidly beating against your chest, and for a moment you forgot it was Steve holding you and rather your father. You couldn’t think straight- “don’t hurt me.”

That seem to sting Steve and you felt his grip loosen until it eventually disappeared overall. Once his hands were no longer gripping your arms, you seemed to snap back into reality and you uncurled from yourself in odd silence. You glanced up at Steve, realizing what you had said in the moment of everything and upon the look on his face, you didn’t know what to think. He seemed just as shocked as you, it was almost as if Steve didn’t know what to think of what you said.

Slumping against the wall, your raised hands fell and you looked to your side with shame. “I’m sorry.”

“I would never…” Steve mumbled, glancing at you. “I would never hurt you- or anyone else.”

“I’m sorry,” you cried out.

“You don’t always have to be sorry.” Steve whispered and his hands reached out grasp your chin, pulling you out of your mind. Meeting his eyes, you found only gentleness. “You don’t need to say sorry for everything.”

You didn’t respond, not right away at least. Instead you stared before you, a distant look in your eyes and you found yourself stuck in your own thoughts. “Yes.” You finally whispered, shaking your head and narrowing your eyes as they watered. You glanced at Steve just as he gazed at you questioningly, and you felt your body un-tense at the look in his eyes. There was so much hurt, as if you’d hurt Steve by implying you were afraid of him. But there was also so much warmth, more warmth you’d ever seen in any man’s eyes. “My father hits me.” It was almost like Steve was compelling you to tell him, but at the same time he wasn’t and you, for the first time, didn’t feel afraid.

The fear of telling someone somehow seemed to disappear.

You couldn’t tear your gaze away from Steve’s and upon your words, his face fell. “Y/N…” He whispered, and Steve took the moment to take a daring step towards you. You didn’t flinch away this time and instead let him reach you, you found yourself caught in the moment. You’d never felt this way about anyone.

Steve reached you and your eyes never left each others. Instead, you felt your hand reaching out towards his jaw, where you touched the fresh bruise your father had inflicted upon you this morning. “And he gave me this.” You whispered, the tears suddenly dissipating and you felt almost serene. “And every other bruise that you have on you…” You met his eye, “he gave me those too.”

You let your hand fall but Steve caught it before it reached your side and gripping it, he brought it up to your faces.

“Why?” You questioned softly, “why are they on you?”

Steve didn’t know why- not yet. But still, he answered; “when I saw you that day last week, I felt something i’ve never felt before about anyone else.” Steve mumbled, his other hand reaching out to let his thumb graze your cheek. “I was sure that Nancy was the one, but there was something about you that told me otherwise. I think I have these bruises for a reason.” Silence echoed and you felt Steve’s face grow nearer to your own. “A reason we can’t ignore.”

It was as if you could feel his lips even though they hadn’t touched your own yet. You felt your eyelids shutting softly in the moment, and Steve’s breath fan over your face. Just as you were about to meet his lips, a voice called out; “Mr. Harrington!” Both you and Steve jumped away from shock and Steve almost immediately left your side, falling beside you as both your eyes fell on Mr. Jones before you.

He looked none too pleased and remembering the compromising position you and Steve had been in- you felt your cheeks burn with embarrassment.

And Ms. Y/L/N.”

Steve coughed and rubbed the back of his neck; “M-Mr. Jones.”

You were too humiliated to say anything, and you watched Mr. Jones shake his head. “School’s over. Please do your personal business elsewhere.” You didn’t think your cheeks could grow any warmer, but sure enough they did and you watched him leave with a sigh, and walk down the hallway. There was a moment of silence before you heard Steve chuckle and your eyes fell on him. You paused, before your own lips turned into a smile, a genuine smile, and you felt yourself laugh softly.

Steve’s face brightened at the sight of you- looking happy. “A smile looks good on you.” He complimented gently.

You smiled brighter, flattered and you turned your head away flustered. But as you did, your eyes found the clock hanging on the school wall and you felt your heart plummet. It was ten minutes before five, and somewhere along the way you’d forgotten all about what would happen if you came home late. Your face paled and you turned to Steve with panic-stricken eyes.

“Y/N?” He questioned, immediately noticing your distress. “What’s wro-”

“I have to go.”

“What?”

You shook your head, turning to the doors and rapidly pushing them open. Though you paused in surprise when you found your father’s car in the parking lot and him standing next to it. The door slammed shut behind you and Steve and upon the noise, your father glanced up and found you. Those eyes pierced you and you found yourself stuck. Your father threw down the cigarette in his mouth, squishing it much like that night on the porch and begun making his way over to you.

You glanced behind you, finding Steve and he almost looked angry. You knew what he was going to do, so panicked, you turned to him. “Don’t do anything,” you whispered in rush. Steve seemed shocked and almost looked as if he was going to argue you with you. “No- If you say anything…” You paused, feeling the fear climb up your own throat. “He’ll kill me.”

Just as Steve opened his mouth to say something your father grabbed ahold of your arm, and you spun to meet him. You could feel your heart pound against your chest and you didn’t meet his eye, looking away. “You’re late.” He growled out. “Come on.” Your father began dragging you and you struggled to keep up with him, nearly tripping over your own feet.

“Hey-”

You turned to Steve, eyes wide as your father paused. Steve took daring steps towards you and you felt like you were going to throw up; “Steve. No.” Steve’s angry eyes left your fathers and met yours. You eyes watered at the concern that traced them and shaking your head, you whispered out; “just leave.”

You didn’t get to say anything else before your father started yanking you forward again. Your eyes stayed on Steve’s for as long as they could before your father shoved you into the passengers seat of his car. Falling into the seat ungracefully, you kept your head down, the tense air making you feel frozen. It was then that your father slammed the car door shut behind him and you heard the sound of the engine start, before you started pulling out.

You glanced at Steve one final time.

anonymous asked:

Hello there; I've been looking through your blog and, as many others say, I just ADORE your art! I was also wondering if you could give me some advice. For quite a few months now I've utterly lost all motivation to draw. I want to go into something with art, so this devastates me, and whenever I try to draw I just get so easily frustrated. I've been an avid artist since I can remember, so for me to suddenly not want to draw for months on end really concerns me. Any suggestions to fix this?

(hi!! apologies for the late reply. i hope this can still be of some help to you despite that!)

i think that’s a feeling every artist struggles with at some point. you love art, you love making art, and it’s immensely frustrating when that suddenly doesn’t work out despite all the effort you’ve been putting in. and then you start to lose motivation, question yourself and everything you’re doing, and it’s a vicious cycle that’s really hard to break out of. so what can we do?

well, here’s a thing. let’s call it the productivity branch.

i feel like my own creative cycles are very seasonal. not in the sense that my creativity depends on the season, but rather that my creativity itself goes through different seasons.

  • spring: new ideas, motivation, productivity still low
  • summer: lots of ideas and very productive
  • autumn: still productive drawing leftover ideas, but new ideas are harder to come by. and then
  • winter: nothing. art-block. lack of ideas, everything-sucks-syndrome, no motivation, the creative part of my brain is basically hibernating

that’s you up there. you’re in a creative winter right now. and without any inspiration or motivation it’ll be hard to find a way to cross that gap over to a new spring (pls bear with the cheesy analogies). and if your cut yourself off from inspirational influence you might start to think that, hey, this isn’t so bad. i mean, who needs spring right? just means you have to do things. be active. yikes. winter’s pretty chill. haha.

but don’t do that. it’ll come around and bite you at some point, because that lack of motivation and activity might start to seep into other parts of your life, not just the creative one, and you don’t want that.

so! when you don’t have ideas and motivation to create, then don’t create. but instead make an effort to inspire yourself. inspiration entails motivation (and vice versa).

  • read books, short stories, poems, science articles, anything
  • go on walks, explore your surroundings, if affordable maybe even go somewhere farther away
  • let people tell you stories
  • listen to new music
  • try things you haven’t done before (deliberately break old habits)
  • go through other people’s inspiration blogs
  • collaborate with a friend
  • get really invested in something, talk to others about it
  • watch movies, animated shorts, documentaries
  • or speedpaintings and art tutorials
  • try different techniques, or new brushes
  • look at art that’s so inspiring that you can’t believe you’re still just sitting there not drawing anything yourself
  • and most importantly, be receptive. take in the world around you, rearrange it in your head, and draw whatever you end up with. that’s the core of what creativity is

think about what you want to achieve. make your friends smile? draw something really cool you can print out and hang up in your room? touch people’s hearts? deliver a message? whatever it is, and however small or inconsequential it might seem, keep it in mind. it’s your light at the end of the tunnel.

if want to keep drawing for the sake of muscle memory while you’re still looking for your inspiration:

  • illustrate your daily activities
  • draw a random shape or find one in a photo (clouds are ideal for this) and turn it into a character or object
  • pick different pictures and combine elements from each of them into one drawing
  • do plain ol’ studies
  • basically don’t try to come up with things completely from scratch. find something to work with and go from there. that will save you the mentally draining task of coming up with a subject, so you can start actively drawing right away

if you still can’t make yourself pick up a pen, make a schedule. train your brain to turn its creative gears at a specific time of the day, make that a habit. do it for pavlov

approach drawing with the awareness that what you create might suck, especially when you’re out of practice, but this doesn’t mean that it will always suck, and it doesn’t mean you suck. if you learn to dissociate your current creative achievements from your worth as a person and your future potential you will get back to work a lot easier, improve faster, and be more resistant to setbacks.

find something that makes it worth the effort of working through the frustration.

you might need to try a lot of different things because everyone copes with this differently, and even when a method worked once that doesn’t mean it always will. so start trying! you can only find inspiration if you start looking for it. 👍
