It was raining.
It rained often in Lestallum now that the eternal night had taken over. Raine could feel her skin crawling as she heard screams in the distance, disembodied howls from daemons that she couldn’t tell were being slain or destroying even more homes. She tugged her cardigan closer to her body, an umbrella clutched in her free hand as she navigated through the crowded streets away from the market.
She’d gone out to try and find some non-perishable foods to store in her pantry since her stock was starting to run low. Her pregnant belly was swollen after nearly seven months, and though she found it uncomfortable to be on her feet so much, Ignis was off assisting the hunters in their efforts to keep the daemon population at bay and was often gone for long stretches at a time.
Raine passed an alley as she made her way up the hill towards the back half of the city where her house stood amongst the others. As she walked by its narrow mouth, she saw something.
A child, huddled by a dumpster, shivering in the cold.
