things for which i am excited

anonymous asked:

This week's big debate seems to be about Cas and humanity. I've read posts that are both excited and upset about how it seems like Cas is eventually going to choose to become human. I was wondering if you had any insight into whether that's a good thing or a bad thing for him, or if he should choose to stay an angel.

Heya! :) I am going to answer this to the best of my ability which is a liiittle bit loopy and over-tired today :P

But yeah I have been scrolling my dash and I am not dead yet so I have seen this discussion going on :D I sort of feel like I haven’t got much to say about it in a way that I haven’t said/agreed with before (so it’s been redundant to weigh in), but like… riiiight back when I was a Fandom Newbie and getting to know the lay of the land and I just got absorbed right into the general fandom consensus at that time among the groups of meta writers I glommed onto…

I mean, because I showed up after 9x18, and then though of course I was around for the following episodes I really started the whole circus of new episode reactions along with everyone, with season 10… between tearing apart the Cas stuff in 9x18 and then the Cas and Hannah stuff in 10x01-3 it just seemed really really obvious where Carver was going with it, and what it meant to Cas? And I mean okay this was 3 (4?) years ago but I also feel like with Cas’s development getting stalled over and over and over except in tangential ways, this was all put on ice like 3 times over before he even got possessed by Lucifer, so the MAJOR work on this was between the last minutes of 8x23 and 10x18 and even then that’s the STORYTELLING of it, and of course Cas himself puts the whole thing on ice as something he has the luxury to think about in 9x09. (Except for the one peanut butter and jelly conversation.)

So in 9x18 the MAJOR thing is that the lyrics “loneliness is a coat you wear” are laid over Cas taking off the coat to mend it (although that’s left out so it’s more like… he takes it off to gather his thoughts on what he’s going to do next, which is even more symbolic and useless in a practical way of why he does it). He then puts the coat back on to greet his army… And in a few episodes Metatron does the “draped yourself in the flag of Heaven” thing, which when 9x18 is all about the subtext and telling us to pay attention, I find a very very straight line to what that meant about him doing similar to 12x19 - using Heaven but not wanting Heaven, and never mind his motivation with Dean (and that being what changes his mind and makes him play Metatron’s game), the way it portrays Heaven as an obligation and a duty to help, but with a loneliness that comes from wearing that coat. He’s walking out into a parking lot full of angels but the lyrics are screaming that he’s without love, and lonely, and the end of the season confirms these choices were the reason.

And in season 10 it gets more personal, and we have Hannah as a counter example. With Daniel in 10x01 who wants to stay on earth and gets what that’s all about we see Cas empathising, but at the end of the episode he goes way deeper than that, talking about human things that upset and startle Hannah. She literally drapes the flag of Heaven over him in 10x02 and smooths it down and accidentally reveals that the plaid of Winchesters is underneath the collar all along, and Cas is sleeping and acting more and more human while sick. She wants to give him his grace back to stop this and he resists… Out of penance and lack of self-worth and knowing he did a heinous thing to steal grace in the first place (again, for Dean, not just to be an angel again but because he needed to survive to warn him about Ezekiel). But symbolically she is trying to make him take the grace and be an angel. Be a leader, the angel the others will rally behind and follow. She represents how all of Heaven feels about him (and 12x19 and 12x15 cover similar ground in what Kelvin says about Cas).

But also in 10x07 it goes deeper with how she feels about humanity - that the human things are forbidden, that love and enjoying sensual pleasures like showers are just *wrong* for angels to experience. She rejects human things entirely as stuff that’s not for her, and nopes out hard. And she is symbolic of angels in general, of Heaven’s desires and feelings in general when she asks him to be a leader.

This is the sort of pressure - innocent of malice but FULL of lack of understanding - that is at odds with what Cas FEELS which is full empathy to wanting to be on earth… an actual understanding and feeling for these human things. He’s in his own body without a shared vessel as 10x09 goes on to confirm, which means he has none of the conflict Hannah does there, and 10x09 paints quite a picture of Cas as wildly unlike all the angels in this way, because it confirms for once and for all he’s alone in there and the Jimmy issue is resolved.

To quickly skip ahead on this side of things, 12x10 shows the same thing but dialled up to a zillion. Instead of Hannah standing in for a clueless family that doesn’t understand and can’t empathise with the different feelings and sense of belonging Cas has, but is still mostly harmless if accidentally intolerant and stifling with their expectations and demands, we have Ishim, who stands in for the worst sort of family experience with intolerance. He’s also in love with a human and that’s the metaphor for violent, self-loathing homophobia I guess, as he kills Lily’s daughter to emotionally sever himself from her, to no avail, and tries to kill Cas for having the same “weakness”. Lashing out with hatred because of the internalised feelings of crossing a taboo line that their society has turned into a harsh rule. Supposedly good reasons are offered with the nephilim thing, but obviously Cas and Dean aren’t gonna have a baby any time soon, so the metaphor unfolds itself as queer through and through once Ishim turns on Dean.

And to walk aaaall the way back DOWN canon, I’m stalled in my rewatch in 4x10 at Anna pacing around talking about how she did the worst thing imaginable and cut out her grace and fell. 4x10 is the first episode to actually explore the nature of angels and lays down some ground rules, like that sex and disobedience are forbidden.

ANNA
Orders are orders. I’m sure I have a death sentence on my head.

PAMELA
Why?

ANNA
I disobeyed… which, for us, is about the worst thing you can do. I fell.

DEAN
Meaning?

PAMELA
She fell to earth, became human.

(I have the transcript open and scrolled down to that part in a tab and have for months… CBA to go find her talking about sex later but I think we all know the stuff she says)

That “worst thing you can do” line feels to me like with retcons from 12x10, that the “sacred oath” may be any sort of angel to human dalliance or connection or desire to BE and to be FREE. The same thing Hannah nopes out of in 10x07 is what Anna had to tear out her grace to experience. Anna having to take her grace back to survive is tragic, especially as it puts her right in the vulnerable firing line of Naomi’s reprogramming. This metaphor is SO much worse with Anna than even Cas, as it’s so simple about her returning to her family as an angel again after making a break to be free and live as a human like she wants, then to be tortured back to the family line and pure obedience, to her eventual death as an unrecognisable killer, a la Cas in 8x17. But without the sympathetic inside view and long arc to explain it or the narrative having any interest in saving her >.> (Hi, I like Anna and am bitter about that whole thing 5eva :P)

Cas in 9x09 also takes back a grace to survive (and this whole arc brings in the clear concept that has been on the backburner since Anna of grace and consciousness as 2 separate things, and grace to an angel being more of its power than its mind, though functionally they seem one and the same when nothing hinky is going on - something else important for human endgame as well as showing ways of removing grace without falling and turning into a human baby)… Again like Anna Cas has little choice when he takes the grace back. He was happy to die human until he learned Sam and Dean were in trouble, and made a horrific choice to help them by stealing grace. After that getting his real grace seemed like the only way to fix him dying of his actions, though he seemed happy to again, the story had other ideas :P (And Mittens wrote something on how Cas has “let himself die” in the way he didn’t in 10x18, where he has to pass through death for change and reaping the character benefits of transitions. (Flyingfish1′s heroine journey meta also comes to mind). Of course by not letting himself die, he’s trapped in the 10x18 > 12x19 holding pattern on his entire life and personal arcs except the ever-worsening depression and self-worth arcs that spring up in the meantime, and the belonging one.)

Anyway it’s all connected, these angels with their connections to humanity, either what they really really want and are denied by fate, or by fate end up experiencing, and really really don’t want. Or in Ishim’s case he really wanted and then because of being an example of a total tool representing institutional prejudices, decided murder was the best way out of his brush with feeling human things. And they all tell us things about Cas from different angles, with different angels (sorry. wordplay was right there.) The long and short of it is that Cas is supposed to be one of those marble statues with no doubts (in 4x10 - *buzzer noise* WRONG *points at 4x07 and “I have doubts”) or that human things are not for them (*points at Cas even bringing up the subject and confusing Hannah about why you’d want to learn them and horrified that Cas seemed to have picked up human cooties by admiring these qualities in the first place*) or indeed that angels in general are massively intolerant to humans and from start to finish it’s a death penalty offence to get tangled up with them or want to be/be one of them. (I know 12x10 is more applicable to the Destiel side of things but the general message about Heaven’s intolerance with “humanity” instead of queerness with all the other examples makes a lot of sense to me.)

Actually I’ve seen the argument a lot that this debate is metaphorical to the trans experience for Cas changing species, even more than the interspecies romance parallel to sexuality metaphors, and I think it is fairly simple to me that this is part of the general queer metaphor applied to Cas as something the angels are intolerant of. 12x10 threw in the Benjamin stuff too and made it a little angel gender studies thing (which Hannah also helped with in 10x17 by reprising her “totally in love with Cas” look in a male vessel and not giving a crap about the change). With Benjamin they said that the angel Cas was closest to there was the one who had a ….. friendship ….. with his vessel. So there’s a lot going on there between that and the “his vessel is a woman, benjamin is an angel” thing) :P

I think, anyway, Anna wanting to be human and getting disowned on pain of death and having to become an angel again, and even then being hunted for daring to not be an angel once, is the closest parallel to what Cas faces. Especially for internalised ideas he had at the time and hadn’t got to unlearn until he was a human.

And I think, additionally to that, he may not have even realised that being human even answered his feeling of not belonging or being different until AFTER it happened. Like, Metatron forced it on him too soon and then everything was non-stop awful and then suddenly he’s had to get grace again (and heading for that flag of heaven metaphor), and only then he gets to reflect on what it felt like, by way of being an angel again looking back on it. It was so brutal and short that he never got a chance to appreciate being human at the time in a way where it would explain to him what he lacks.

By 10x18 he has the family dinner and he takes his coat off for it. Heaven has rejected him, he’s seemingly chosen the Winchesters again, and got his grace back, but he has to go back to the grind, and he doesn’t change his wardrobe, he keeps the coat which is basically performative angel-ness with Winchester plaid underneath.

(Actually about the only time I can think of that angel-ness is used as the queer metaphor and not the other way around is in 9x06 when Cas is playing cis straight human to Nora and Dean shows up yelling about him being an angel at his workplace… I think that’s a very circumstantial metaphor which is more about delightfully queercoding the entire thing than a wider statement… After all, contained within a season where the main arc for Cas is leading a heaven army thing, and ending in “i just want to be an angel” in utter, tragic defeat on the emotional battlefield. Absolutely NOT a statement on what would make Cas feel HAPPY, just useful and numb, per 10x03 and what he says about human pain and how revealing those lines are side by side about what Cas is feeling and how angel is he REALLY, like, deep down in his too-big heart where it matters)

But yeah he just keeps on going after 10x18 and this all kinda drops away, so I think until season 12 basically nothing was really done to mess around with this concept again in a substantial, meaningful way aside from attack dog and similar arcs tangential to this and more about Cas’s state of mind in general (as the same conflict can be applied to Dean when human). It has become more about Cas belonging in the Winchesters as the main thing - 12x19 has Cas being way more upfront about using Kelvin to his face, that he’s only going along with it because his old connections to Heaven are useful, as well as shining a massive spotlight on Cas considering himself a guardian angel as a bad bad thing, which is actively damaging his beloved family relationships and especially upsetting Dean. He would rather protect them from afar, and I think long-term Cas ending up with the Winchesters but as an angel would always be somewhat prone to that sort of thought in an emergency that as a more powerful being he would have to protect them, and a sense of not belonging entirely as another species that can’t quiiite relate no matter how different he is and how much more kinship he feels with humanity even as an angel. I can’t see that as a happy ending, and since 12x19 it feels rather more like it would be not finishing a plotline that is not JUST about this relationship but using it to move the piece on the board about Cas’s human arc forward another step, as his endgame would be not just as human, but also with them, so tying the concepts together isn’t a bad idea, as long as it’s clear this is something in season 9 and 10 Cas came to as a desire without very much contact with them at all, and therefore very much for himself as an understanding of what he is and what he desires.

And, again, I don’t think Cas has great resources for self-reflection on the subject - not just that Metatron had to turn him human briefly to even make him realise he could ever do it, but something like using the belonging with family arc to help speed it along gives him a clear reason and goal for why it works and would feel right for him and to give him the place to self-analyse with motivation. I really don’t like the idea of equating this entirely with Cas’s belonging with the Winchesters arc all on its own, though. It CAN’T just be about that he should be human to be with his human friends/family etc. But I do think that a lot of the work to explain why he identifies with humanity has ALREADY been done and is a solid, existing part of his character already.

In a happy ending even if it all gets told tied up with the Winchesters, I would point to season 9 & 10 to argue that it was not JUST FOR them, but that they were the soft landing for him to make a decision. If he became human he wouldn’t be forcing himself to fit in with them, he would be doing it for himself. I mean, since season 4 he is equated with Anna, protesting loudly he’s nothing like her when even before we meet her he admits to one of the cardinal sins of doubt. He has ALWAYS had a slight leaning towards humanity and clearly described as UNANGELIC traits and feelings. So in this way he’s always FELT different and therefore as it gets expanded and expanded and ends up being a deeply complex metaphor and fascinating way to relate to Cas, it’s clear this is an inherent part of him from the start. The human feelings that Hannah violently nopes out of have been things Cas has tolerated, defined himself by, and felt all along. She’s used to show that Cas hasn’t ever been bothered in the same way, and just uses her leaving as an excuse to delve even deeper into human connections by worrying about Claire, and in the narrative, walking us right into proving he has his own body and no Jimmy, and another way Cas is both unique, and uniquely suited to a human endgame.

I think though that a lot of this is personal and subjective on the arguments going around, and I see this sooo deeply through the old meta I read back in season 9 & 10 which has shaped all my ongoing thoughts I do know I have developed probably my own biases on this. I think Cas would never be happy as an angel in a happy families endgame because the Guardian Angel Cas issue (which was his downfall in season 6, so not a new thing, just re-focused recently) would always play on his mind as it’s shown that he self-sabotages his relationships in order to protect them. I see it like season 4 Sam using his powers to exorcise because it’s an ethical way to get rid of demons quick in a fight without stabbing the innocent meatsuit. In season 5 even knowing aaall the trouble it caused him and that Ruby played off his desire to save people as a GOOD thing to do great evil, he was tempted by the demon blood and regrets/resents not being able to use powers to exorcise the kids. (Obviously before he learns they were all just human all along because that episode is so disturbing >.>)

Even if it went some pretty hinky places (as in the end of season 6 for Cas and the guardian angel mentality, with Crowley as his Ruby, as he uses “i still considered myself the Winchesters’ guardian” as a justification) Sam’s motives were for good originally and he missed the idea of sacrificing his own morality to save people for an objective better good. Cas seeing his powers as making him more powerful, therefore more expendable, less included, and with a personal sense of duty to watch over and protect them, HAVING the powers would only ever be living in temptation to do a 12x19 again. Sam only recovers properly without the powers to tempt him and I feel he’s in a very different place as a person by now… Cas with a human endgame might not get room to grow out of it on screen but by his grace being removed (hopefully and tbh by necessity willingly), he’d have the potential and promise that he would be able to recover in the same way from this toxic mentality. And I consider 12x19 very much doing for Cas and the guardian angel thing what Carver era and 8x01 especially did for the codependency. Just put it all on the table and told us, this is hurting them more than it’s doing good in the world. Let’s look at how it hurts them and why. Let’s aim to fix it and let them move past it.

And even if Cas can start to recover from some broad strokes, like feeling more included, feeling like less of a tool/personal attack dog, he will only have a long term chance at happiness if the temptation is removed at the source, and he will need to UNDERSTAND that too and to vocalise some things about his reasons for watching over them like this LONG before he chooses humanity. And these are very much my personal subjective feelings on why it feels BAD to me that Cas would stay an angel, as it’s right off on another end of the spectrum of why people are arguing they feel bad if he would become human. To me the personal identity stuff right down to complex sexuality and gender metaphors are MAIN TEXT in Cas’s arc due to him being an inherently queer character. The “it feel bad” reaction to me right now is that I feel sad for Cas being an angel around the Winchesters forever because he will always be their guardian angel and that’s BAD for what he WANTS which is just to be a part of the family with no complicated strings attached like his obligation to protect them. So to me I see humanity as the obvious answer to that. But that’s a personal reading of what I hope would happen and why. So my explanation of what I see in the text is one thing and this part is another, if that makes sense?

… I hope any of this makes sense. I apologise for typing so long… I know I said I’ve said it all before but I mean I assume you’re not tag-diving on my blog if you’re just asking me and tbh I wouldn’t know what tag to dive either and they’re *my* tags so I’m not judging ;)

managed to squeeze this print in right before ECCC! my boys <3

Hey pals. Apparently this is a thing that we, as an internet femslash community, need, so it is time for Grouchy Aunt J’s Guide To Fandom Deportment.

1. I know that you really like your favourite actors, especially the ones involved in your fave wlw ships. I totally understand this! They are pretty, and wlw fandom is really fun, and if your ship is also a canon ship then it is super exciting and validating to see yourself reflected in media that you love. I, too, love that feeling and get really passionate about the media that I watch, which is why I am a Fandom Old.

2. The actors in your favourite ships are people. Like, real people, with anxieties and food preferences and sometimes they have weird hair days and some of them are introverted and some of them are extroverted, etc etc etc. When they are acting in your favourite media, they are going to work.

3. Part of an actor’s job these days is to sometimes be around on social media. Sometimes not! If they are kind/friendly/available on social media, that is a fun perk of someone who is going the extra mile for their job. You are not entitled to this.

4. Even if you super like a ship and are really passionate about fandom, there are things it is not alright to do. Actors are people, and when fans start treating them poorly it is unkind and potentially frightening or traumatic. Plus, your behaviour reflects badly on all fans and means that fandom as a whole doesn’t get to have nice things anymore. (Thanks, jerks.)

5. It is never okay to:

  • harass actors on social media because something about their character is interfering with your ship/they’re not supporting your ship enough/they’re supporting the wrong ship too much/their character is problematic/the ship you think their ship is better than is problematic/just whatever please stop it this is not their problem. Tweeting at them will not fix whatever is upsetting you on the show you like, but it is probably pretty hurtful for them and not something they should have to put up with.
  • harass/question actors who are involved in queer ships about their sexuality in public spaces. People’s sexuality is private, and being involved in portraying a queer canon or subtext ship doesn’t give fans the right to know about an actor’s queerness or lack thereof unless they choose to volunteer that.
  • tell actors on social media about any sexual fantasies you may or may not have about them, b/c sexual consent also applies to actors.
  • send actors unsolicited links to/hand bound novellas/lovingly hand-lettered scrolls of fanfiction, especially smutty fanfiction, especially especially if that author is not aware that their fic is getting sent to actors inappropriately.
  • send actors your nsfw fanart about them, or someone else’s nsfw fanart about them, oh my g o d.
  • ask them to read your fanfiction or autograph your fanfiction, damn.

5a. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself: would I, or another a reasonable person, want to see this [insert fanwork of varying levels of nsfw] about a representation of myself/themselves? Most actors are actual people who find this just as upsetting as you might find it, if someone drew fanart of you and then brought it to your workplace.

5b. Yes, I know, there is a certain amount of distance involved in creating fanworks because they are about fictional characters and that storytelling and play is one of the things I love about fandom. But I also never, under any circumstances, would want any of the actors involved in my ships to read my fanfiction because it would be super uncomfortable and that’s the point

6. Also, your favourite actor’s non-actor family and friends are just that: not actors. Don’t bother them. Don’t - hypothetically - stalk them and try to catfish them to get information about your favourite actor. It’s super super not okay and it’s a huge boundary violation.

In conclusion: social media is super great and has changed fandom in a lot of neat ways, but having cool TV and movie actors available to connect with in that way is a privilege, not a right. Let’s all act like we are worthy of it.

Successful People Start Before They Feel Ready

“If you’re working on something important, you’ll never feel ready. A side effect of doing challenging work is that you’re pulled by excitement and pushed by confusion at the same time.” – James Clear

The Start-Up Guy is well underway. I have been working with several businesses, including a very exciting Johannesburg-based business which is launching in the next two months. I am so honoured that they used and continue to use my services.

I’ve noticed a common trait amongst all the guys and girls I’ve been working with recently, and I thought it might be useful to share because I think many other people are experiencing the same thing.

Almost all entrepreneurs don’t know what they’re doing and it’s perfectly okay. In fact, I don’t know of a single one who, at the outset, knew exactly what they needed to do and when to do it. Before your mind does that thing where it jumps to conclusions, let me explain.

A start-up is an experiment, a matter of trial and error. No one can be fully certain about the route it will take. At best, one can have a firm idea of the intended outcome, but whether that transpires is all dependent on the market’s response to your idea (and who really knows what that’ll be? Right?).

Sir Richard Branson has one of the most interesting entrepreneurial stories, for me, because he started many of his companies largely by mistake. He dropped out of school to continue a magazine business he had no idea was going to sustain him. As a way to grow his magazine sales, he started distributing music records made by unknown artists to his readers, and so began the journey of Virgin Records. He started Virgin Airlines after he was delayed by his flight facing maintenance issues before take-off. This guy is the epitome of just getting on with it. This guy is also worth $5 Billion today!

As an entrepreneur and business owner you have to embrace the learning process and continuously learn (by doing). Learn your market, learn your business, and continuously adapt your learnings to suit your market as you go. The entrepreneurs who embrace the learning process and respond to unexpected events in real time are often the ones who do very well.

Without babbling on for too long, the moral of the story is that not knowing what to do is not a good enough reason to not start your business. Passion and a basic idea is enough. Even if you are physically incapable of carrying out certain tasks, outsourcing skills is a thing (like helluurrr, this is why people like me are here). It is no mistake that one of the single most important traits that investors look for in entrepreneurs is passion, especially in the very early stages of a start-up. Not “intelligence.” Not qualifications. Passion (synonymous with commitment/dedication in this regard). A founder who is not passionate about what they are doing will give up when they face the inevitable hurdles of starting a business. Passion is the fuel by which a project goes from start-up to a fully-fledged business.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that you can go and start the next big business with the technical skills of a toddler. I am merely saying that, within reason, you can start a business without the technical know-how, as long as you have the dedication to follow through with the necessary steps. In doing so, be realistic, tread carefully and always consult a professional when you’re thinking about making an expensive decision.

If whilst reading this article you had a certain project or idea in mind, maybe it’s time to pursue it with everything you have. Why aren’t you? That was not a rhetorical question. Like Richard Branson famously said, “screw it. Just get on and do it.” If you are really struggling with how to conceptualise or begin your business, consult me and we can find a solution together.

Once again, thank you for reading.

About The Suffering Game

I’ve seen some folks talk about being exhausted by the structure of The Suffering Game, which I completely get — thematically, it’s meant to exhaust the players. I hoped to toss enough variety into the different challenges to engage everyone, but I can also appreciate how seeing the boys go through so much crap every episode can be a bit tiring for some folks. Without giving too much away, things are very much going to come to a head on the next episode, so to those folks: hang in there!

There’s some narrative stuff happening in The Suffering Game that won’t make sense quite yet, but the earliest inspiration I had for it was as a means of endangering the heroes in a real, tangible way without just hanging the threat of death over their heads. It’s something we’ve struggled with a lot in this show, mostly because of how we play — D&D has lots of rules about health management, about treating Hit Dice like a non-renewable resource mid-adventure. And a lot of that stuff clashes with how we play the game to make a good radio show. As a result, the boys are kind of untouchable, with health pools that may diminish, but never enough (or permanently enough) to be a serious threat. The sacrifices done at the wheel are permanent, and largely non-mechanical, skirting those systems altogether. Again, something that may upset folks who wish we followed those rules a bit more closely — though I hope those folks can understand that this is simply the balance that works for us as a podcast.

The arc was also designed to treat a problem that every D&D campaign I’ve ever participated in or tuned into suffers from — power creep. By this point, the boys are armed enough to be, essentially, demigods. It’s a power I’ve given them freely, but it’s impossible to prevent that creep while still offering them cool carrots and a functional economy, which I’ve tried to inject into the Fantasy Costco and other systems. It’s another really difficult balance, and they’ve taken advantage of it in a way that they’ve become immensely powerful, able to easily handle any problem I throw in their direction. The Wheel was intended to perhaps pull them back down to earth a bit, so to speak, though most of the sacrifices they’ve made have been more narrative rather than mechanical. (Which I’m totally fine with, because again, it’s another way of dealing damage.)

Anyways, I just wanted to get some of my thoughts down, because the last thing I wanted people to think is that I actually harbored some sort of sadistic enjoyment out of just straight-up hurting my players. (That’s a certain archetype of DM that I don’t really understand.) I’ve seen some folks characterize this arc as Saw-like torture porn, which I think is mostly unfair, but I can understand their exhaustion. I’d hoped to move through this arc a bit faster, but as is always the case, things have run a bit long. I really hope you enjoy what happens next, because I am very, very excited to get there.

Talks Machina Highlights: Episode 97
  • Paper pre-stream reads “Easter Egg: Brian Wayne Foster’s home address is inscribed on the set somewhere.”
  • Brian reveals that he’s wearing the shirt with the cross-eyed picture of him that Sam was wearing in the last episode.
  • There is a betta fish on set, and as soon as they zoom in on it, Marisha’s name-card pops up. Brian: “This is a betta fish. The alpha fish we keep behind a paywall.”
  • Keyleth now holds the record for most damage dealt in a single turn (690) and the most damage taken in a single blow (363).
  • Matt kinda hoped that Vex would revive Keyleth and just be like “tell no one this happened.” Everyone adored everything about that moment.
  • Asked about their characters basically becoming demi-gods at this point, Taliesin: “I’m feeling smug about it.” Sam points out that most of VM isn’t particularly mature, so it’s a little worrying that they’re gaining this much power. Matt; “Eh, fortune favors the bold. It’s fine.”
  • Matt hasn’t had a campaign get to the upper levels like this before, so he’s really excited to try some new things in the coming arc. Taliesin has never played at such high levels before, or even heard of someone playing at such high levels.
  • Taliesin figures the most Percy way for Percy to die would be to go into a bar, attempt to threaten everyone, and have everyone turn on him. Sam on the most Taryon way for Taryon to die: pre-Vox Machina, he would go off on a paid hunt and he’d somehow still lose.
  • Brief digression about how to play out death by autoerotic asphyxiation in D&D. As you do.
  • Matt definitely shied away from having players “roll for baby” over the break, since he thought that definitely wasn’t a fair thing to throw at a player based on a dice roll. (“…unless you’re Scanlan”) Matt also mentions that Vax and Keyleth have had conversations about how they’re "probably for the most part an asexual relationship.”
  • Taliesin expands a bit on the fancy ball at Whitestone: “It’s basically a Medieval Times version of Santa’s Village.” Brian: “What would Percy wear to that?” Taliesin: “Cowboy boots and a smile.”
  • Taliesin mentions that Percy and Cassandra are starting to be a little sillier around each other now, trying to remind themselves that it’s all over. The thing they have most in common that VM doesn’t share is being the product of a legacy and learning to find their own way within that legacy.
  • Taliesin has already started a playlist for his character in the next campaign.
  • Matt is gonna start everyone in the next campaign halfway through level 2 so they get to play with their characters a bit before deciding which archetype to go for.
  • Sam has a brief rant about how many planes there are in D&D. “Let’s streamline. Let’s streamline.” Matt: “Sam, I am so excited for the RPG you’re releasing next year.” Sam: “The Three Places.”
  • Matt wasn’t expecting the Shadowfell reveal to come so soon. There was gonna be another reveal down the road that might still play out in the game. Elements of the story may have been accelerated as a result of that bit of player ingenuity.
  • Taliesin’s character was eaten and there was a near-TPK in the Shadowfell the last time a campaign he played in went there. (He and the other dead players had to go back in playing as the mercenaries sent to retrieve their bodies.)
  • Keyleth’s natural 20 when touching the orb back in episode 34 was sort of an example of failure by success, in that it delayed the Shadowfell reveal considerably. At that time, though, she could’ve died from the damage it dealt, or gone unconscious and bled out on the other side. If she had made it through, she wouldn’t have had Plane Shift and would’ve had to find a way back, which would’ve started the Shadowfell stuff early. So they would’ve had to work out their priorities given that the Chroma Conclave attacked shortly thereafter.
  • Matt thought of the scry (reverse-whisper) as a successful test run for maybe pulling out most of the party and isolating players again in the future.
  • Sam talks a bit about how Matt takes the “cartoonish backstories” they make up and turns them into a coherent narrative.
  • They were at Matt’s house digging through his minis trying to figure out where the story was gonna go next. (Brian calls out Matt’s impressive mini-painting skills.)
  • The silencer is a ten-foot bubble of Silence spell that follows Percy around: downside is he can’t hear or say anything while he’s taking those shots. Taliesin is very excited for those potential downsides.
  • Sam had no warning about the kidnapping; he found out when the rest of us did. When she handed Taryon a cream puff, Matt secretly rolled a constitution saving throw for him—it was essentially a delayed Sleep spell.
  • Percy’s chilled out a bit over his anger at Scanlan during the past year.
  • Tary’s started to learn his limitations over the past year—he’s aware of how strong he can be as part of a team, but hasn’t really ventured out on his own yet and is worried about how much of a crutch the money has been for him.

Talks Machine in the Dark:

  • Matt talks about some of the weird and wacky dragons out there in the expanded D&D literature. Sam: “By the way, in my RPG, there’s only one kind of dragon.” Matt really enjoys creating new creatures, so he’s been veering away from the books a little more often.
  • Someone suggests that Tary could multiclass into bard. Sam hadn’t thought about that. Matt points out that Doty’s the one writing the book, so maybe Doty should become a bard. Sam: “Can Doty be a bard?” Matt: “No.”
  • If Percy had the power, would he bring back his dead family? If he thought the consequences would be minimal, sure, but he also has a respect for death. Every time they’ve managed to bring someone back, it was the D&D equivalent of a crash cart, within 24 hours. Percy doesn’t even know where his family’s bodies are. Matt, grinning: “I do.”
  • Matt points out that this is part of why Keyleth is so frightened of higher-level resurrection spells: how do you choose who you can bring back? What gives you that right? What are the moral implications? He also brings back Kerrek’s probing questions about resurrection. Taliesin sums it up beautifully: “It’s dark and twisted and strange once you start pulling it apart.”
  • The hardest character death for Matt was Pike’s death back in the home game—it was the first time for a lot of the players to realize that they’d spent a year and a half with this character and she could still be gone like that. Apparently Ashley came home at 3AM distraught and tried explaining the whole thing to Brian, who knew nothing about D&D at the time and was a little confused. “…you died? At Travis and Laura’s?”
  • Doty can speak primarily because it’s funny, and also because Sam wanted to give Matt something more to do when he plays Doty. There was a lot of discussion over which word it would be. Sam: “It could’ve been Hodor.”
  • Someone asked whether another Battle Royale will come up, and Matt thinks probably before too long, next time they have players away or just need a week off.

lazarusonfire  asked:

hi! just finished acomaf and oh Gods my heart is in ruins. could you pls give some book recommendations as I am trying to survive until May.

Oh my god, c’mere–

We have all been there, and know this - it does not get better. I mean. It does. But at the same times, it really doesn’t. Settle in and learn to love to suffer at the hands of our Liege, Sarah J Maas. Welcome into the folds, friend.

OKAY. BOOKS. Now I am going in blind since I don’t know what you like besides SJM so I’m just gonna throw you a mixed bag:

– Tales of The Otori: This is a trilogy of historical fantasy novels set in a world based on feudal Japan. Let me say that one more time. This fantasy world is based on feudal Japan. It is stunning and gorgeous and earth shatteringly tragic (it has it’s problematic areas, but I still love and recommend it).
– BRANDON SANDERSON: if you are in any way interested in epic fantasy and high fantasy I recommend any and all books by Sanderson. If you’re used to reading YA I would start with the Mistborn trilogy. But my absolute favourite series of his is the Stormlight Archive. He is the Master, the Sensei, the Jedi, the King of unique worldbuilding and foreshadowing and intricate plots. And the humour in his books are always so god damned on point! He has so many series and books to pick from though, go check him out and see if anything catches your eye!
– Graceling: this a lovely little YA fantasy and a very easy and quick read. Could work as a quick palette cleanser if you’re hung up on acomaf (which we all have been lbh).
– Six of Crows: YA fantasy, gorgeous characters and AMAZING dialogue. That’s one of my favourite things with Bardugo’s writing. The rythm and pacing in her dialogues are !!!!!!!! And if you’re looking for diversity (skin colour, gender, religion, sexuality, bodies and disability) - this is your book.
– Nevernight: I have not yet started this book, but I am SO EXCITED TO. It comes with extremely enthusiastic recommendations from my friends and the fanart I’ve seen looks incredible, and the cover art is *HEARTEYES* too.

Good luck getting over the ACOMAF-hangover! x

anonymous asked:

Help! Do you ever have days where you don't want to write or revise but you know you should? What do you do to get through them?

Oh my.

Okay, so this is a thing that happens. Maybe not to everyone, but it happens to me, and when it does it is almost always for one of two reasons. Each of these reasons has a slightly different solution (there is also a third reason, which we may get into in a minute, but it’s more of a crisis than a reason, so mileage may vary).

Reason number one is, I’m easily distracted and full of thoughts and kind of lazy. So if I’m being that, there is only one solution and it is “Brenna, sit down in front of that screen and make a book, it is your JOB.” It usually works—boredom maxes out after about five minutes of staring at my document file and I start working. And there are some secondary tricks too: I work in coffee shops a lot because I like the background noise. I have big headphones that feel good squeezing my head and fill me with a sense of wellbeing. I find a song and listen to it on repeat. I always drink or eat the same thing. I wear a sweater that I like. (I fall into habits very easily and have learned to use this quality to trick myself into working.)

Reason number two, though. Reason two is that sometimes my brain is empty. I’ve been working too much too fast and not refilling my thoughts and now all the fuel is gone and I’m just grinding metal. Sometimes that means I need to not work and do something mindless, like wash dishes or vacuum or repot houseplants or drive or go outside and dig a hole and then fill it back up. Or sometimes it means I need to not work and go read a book or watch a movie or go to a museum and see things other people made when they were expansive and excited and not out of thoughts. And then, once my brain has had enough food and enough rest, I’m ready again.

Both of these reasons for not writing are totally normal (for me) (for you?) but it’s important to be able to tell the difference, because one is solved by powering through, and one is not. Which brings us to the third crisis reason.

Sometimes, I am on a brutal deadline. Sometimes it’s non-negotiable. Sometimes I have pulled two all-nighters in a row and am staring down the barrel of a third, and I know I’d want to work if I could just have a second where I’m NOT working, but that is only a beautiful dream. This is a problem. You know those people who only ever seem to operate at 100% when under extreme duress?  *raises hand* A weird thing happens where I don’t WANT to work anymore, but the overdrive switch has flipped in my brain, and it will do the work until the job is done, whether I want to or not. And trust me, I DON’T. It is like being dragged through a drippy alligatory swamp by a robot—you’re just like “please, robot, stop moving my legs! This was the actual hardest thing for me to figure out a solution for, because:

1) Deadlines are a part of my job, and sometimes they are quite tight, and the work still has to get done anyway.

2) As much as I absolutely hate it, there is another part of me that likes it.

But I know more now than I used to. Back when I was 23 and completely unwise and taking a course overload in grad school while interning and also working 30 hours a week, I was just like “this is how we live a life!” That is not true. Can you hear me in the back? THAT IS NOT TRUE.

But sometimes you still have to do stuff and there’s a lot of it and you also have very little time to do it in. So let me tell you a deadline secret, it is very important: the answer to Brenna’s acute deadline crisis is, drink water, eat almonds, divide each 24-hour cycle into two discrete sections, allowing for one 3-hour sleep cycle and one 4 to 5-hour one. This is because if you are me, you start to feel like you are not allowed to sleep. This is a lie. And in fact, if you don’t sleep, I promise your work won’t be as good. At very best, it will be pretty weird. Also, drink less coffee. You think you need it, but you don’t.

I realize the answer to this question escalated quickly. Probably just focus on points 1 and 2—telling the difference between when your brain is empty and when it’s just dragging its feet. Unless you are a person who is currently living my 23-year-old life. In which case, you are not just allowed to sleep. Dude, you HAVE TO.

HRT
Day #29
05/29/2017

Hey peeps!
It is with much relief that I say I am FINALLY getting over kidney stones 2017. Just when I thought I was better, nope! More stones and 2 surgeries later, here we are! But all is better now. I had my second stint removed yesterday morning and I feel SO much better this morning. I got THE BEST sleep last night, first time in a month! All of this struck right at the beginning of my HRT journey which was really unfortunate, but IT DID NOT CONQUER ME! I stuck with my hormones even through all of the other medication once I got the green light from my doctor. Today is 29 solid consecutive days on HRT and it is definitely showing in my opinion. A picture only says so much, but my skin is getting so soft, it is really nice and makes me smile. It has been difficult separating my emotions because some things I was experiencing were because of the kidney stones or medications they had me on. So, I am excited to really tune into my mental state as I begin finishing my antibiotics and eventually get back to just taking my hormones. I did have a bit of an emotional spell right before Mothers day, but that very well might not have been hormones. I had a lot of stress going on unrelated to why I felt like I was having such intense emotions. Like I said, I am glad to be getting back to just my hormones.

Also, I know it is not Tuesday.
But honestly, whatever.
This shirt is comfy.

Xoxo

After Hours - Lin-Manuel Miranda x Reader

Summary: Based on the prompt: “I have a key to the theatre, and sometimes I go there when I need to think. Apparently so do you.”

There is something very beautiful about a theatre without an audience. It is filled to the brim with potential, all these seats just waiting to be filled, an empty stage that could become an entirely different universe. The lights are dimmed down, and from inside a deserted Richard Rodgers, it is as if the entire world has stopped spinning.

I’m not late, you’re just EARLY. Have some dickkory feels for dickkory week 2017, with a dash of Mar’i because I love her and DC needs to make it HAPPEN.

Dick Grayson experienced life with Kor’iandr in threes.

On his third mission as the Teen Titan’s newly appointed leader, it had been the fateful day that he had met her.

The only word at the time that entered Dick’s mind the minute he’d laid eyes on the powerful warrior woman before him, was stunning. From the shock of her thick, rich, flame red curls to the eerie glow of her bright, flashing green eyes, he’d known he stood no chance.

From the moment she’d kissed him, Richard Grayson was a dead man walking.

Their relationship from that point onwards was a roller coaster ride of tumultuous proportions. More often than not, they were passionate lovers, for how could anyone be anything less around a woman of Starfire’s caliber? However, there were three separate occasions of which they were something more than friends, but not quite a definition of romance.

Three instances where he’d broken her heart, like the menace that he felt he was, for who else but a monster could turn away a creature as lovely as her?

Yet each and every time, Kory’s kindness and forgiveness knew no bounds. She maintained their friendship, loved him thoroughly through the years, regardless if they were involved or not. Her feelings for him never changed, never waned, and he would always have a friend in her, no matter what.

They were always close, and maybe that was why it was so easy to fall back into a relationship with her. Like magnets, they were drawn to one another, unable to function without the other in their lives in some fashion. Kory was more than just a teammate and a lover; she was important to him, and no matter what, that never changed. Lovers came and went between the both of them, but to one another, they were always constant.

It should have been a sign.

Truthfully, he should have seen it coming.

“When this is all over, Dick Grayson, you’re going to marry me,” she’d informed him quite bluntly in the midst of a heated battle.

It came off sounding almost like a threat, but one made in obvious jest to help lighten the seriousness of the situation they were in. An apocalypse usually did bring out any remaining last regrets and secret wishes from the lips of those losing the war, especially in a never-ending battle with the world destroyer, Trigon.

“If you’re proposing to me, Kory, then the answer is yes,” he’d retaliated, not without a cocky grin as he took out yet another of Trigon’s goons single-handedly.

He heard her scoff in between heavy breaths while she expertly dodged attack after attack before blasting her enemies with a furious swipe of her starbolts. “Do not flatter yourself, Nightwing. On Tamaran, marriage proposals are only considered prosperous if they are met in bloodshed!”

Starfire let out a fierce battle cry as she uppercut a demon and sent them flying into the air. Richard punched another in the nose, feeling the cartilage and bones crunch beneath his knuckles. “Looks like plenty of bloodshed to me, Kory.” He wiped at the dried blood smeared under his nose, around his mouth, and along the side of his head, where it matted strands of his ochre coloured hair.

That earned him a gleeful smirk, along with a chuckle of amusement from the warrior princess, who although did appear strained, did not seem to have suffered any wounds at all. “Consider it a done deal, then, Richard. However, if you are truly worthy of being my husband, then you will need to survive this!”

Nightwing brushed his wet hair from his face, the sweat streaming down the sides of his handsome visage due to exertion. “If that isn’t one hell of a motive, I don’t know what is!” He shouted, taking on his infamous stance as he beckoned the swarm of demon spawn to come at him.

However, once Raven helped banish Trigon to another dimension yet again, and the other Titans helped eradicate the remaining vermin, Starfire and Nightwing stood still amidst the lifeless bodies of the creatures they’d slain, and breathed deeply.

It had been a joke, hadn’t it?

Yet, when his eyes met hers, Richard Grayson knew that he was going to marry this battle worn goddess of a woman, and judging by the tug of a smile on her lovely lips, she knew it, too. With a smile so wide it hurt, he then took her hand in his, never more grateful to know that not only would he live, but that he’d spend the remainder of his days with the golden girl of his dreams.

“I believe it is a human custom for you to purchase me a ring?” She grinned, and his heart leapt at the sight of her unabashed, glowing beauty.

She was a mess; her flame-like hair askew, a tangle of vibrant curls and luscious locks. Bits of mortar and rock could be found in her tresses. Her outfit, already so revealing of her golden complexion, was torn and covered in the blood splatters of her enemies. Her face was marred with soot and ash, but still her luminescent eyes glowed, and Richard could lose himself in their green pools for the rest of his life.

Which was what he planned to do.

Together, hand in hand, they walked away from the scene of the battle, giddy and bubbling with the excitement of starting their new life together.

“I suppose this is a bad time to tell you that I am with child…?” Kory suddenly intruded, albeit sheepishly.

And that was how Richard Grayson was defeated; not by an army of demons born from hell, not by Trigon the terrible, but by the mere notion of being a father.

Dick experienced things with Kor’iandr in threes.

On the anniversary of their wedding day, three years later, which also happened to fall on their sweet daughter, Mar’i’s birthday, Kory had given him yet another surprise.

Twins,” she told him gleefully, throwing her arms around his shoulders in a staggering hug. “Can you believe it?! Oh, Richard, on Tamaran, twins are considered a true blessing! A symbol of endless love and happiness!”

She squeezed him tighter, all the while Mar’i ran around them in circles, shouting, “Twins! Twins! Twins!” He’d gotten their daughter a pastel pink balloon to celebrate her birthday, and she dashed about while it trailed behind her, trying hopelessly to keep up with the toddler. Her hair, dark like her father’s but thick and curly like her mother’s, was already well past her shoulders and down the small of her back.

Dick hugged his taller wife tightly, drowning any doubts or lingering feelings of dread with the sheer joy and love he felt for her and his daughter; his new family. He smiled into her hair, the smell of strawberry and vanilla in his nose, and gushed into her ear, “Looks like I’ll be outnumbered if one of them is a girl. Three to one, maybe two? I can’t wait, Kory. I can’t wait to meet them.”

He looked up to kiss her sweetly then, not caring for the strange stares he received from the others in the doctor’s office, as well as the disgusted face Mar’i made in response. She stuck out her tongue and shook her head. “Bleh!”

Maybe three was just their lucky number…

ARC contest (+ a new teaser)

It’s been wildly busy, in the best possible way, and I hope to have some really exciting news soon. I don’t yet. But I hope soon. But for now:

My publisher sent me four ARCs of The Becoming of Noah Shaw. This is exciting and scary—it’s been five years since I’ve had ARCs for a book, and three years between the ending of Mara’s origin story and the beginning of Noah’s…hero journey, let’s call it. If you’ve stuck with my characters for the length of three books, I can’t thank you enough. I wouldn’t be here without you, and I’ve been thinking for months about ways I can thank you for that. I’m still working that out—I owe you all a monumental debt, and figuring out how to repay it isn’t easy. But there is one small thing I can do first, right now, which is to try and make your wait for The Becoming of Noah Shaw a bit shorter.

Since this is a series that I wrote as much for fans of the Mara Dyer trilogy as I did for myself, I decided against giving ARCs away randomly—I want to make sure they go to readers who are as excited about reading the book early as I am about sharing it. If that’s you, here’s what you’ve got to do:

Make something. Create. I’ve got four ARCs to give away, so it seems right that there should be four ways to win it:

1) Make MADNESS art. Draw something inspired by Mara. By Noah. By Jamie or Daniel or anyone or anything in the series. Paint something, sculpt something, draw a cartoon, a comic, graphic design (edits count!), typography–photography counts too! I love bookstagram and the staging of book-related photos, so it would be splendid to see entries like that. You can also do multiples (like comic panels, or anything considered part of one series), to count as one entry.

2) Write something series-inspired. A poem, a short little story (500 words, max), an excerpt of your fanfic; something set in the Dyerverse. (Keep it rated PG-13 to a soft R, though, because my baby brother is probably going to end up judging some of the entries and…awkward).

3) Film something. A fanvid, a trailer, a short film, movie, or even just a video of yourself talking about the books, Booktube-styles. Making videos is hard, but that probably means there will be a less crowded field!

4) Rando! Make a dress out of the pages of one of the books (someone did that once and it was super rad). Make a fannish thingie (creating headers, Tumblr themes, fan mixes, fan sites and communities) get your cosplay on, make some jewellery, show off your fresh MADNESS-related tattoo—really, anything goes (except nudity. Not that).

Here’s how you enter:

You post your entry or a link to your entry via the ‘submit post’ option on Tumblr, or the Ask option, or, if it’s an image or a video, you can post the link to such in the Ask box or, if you feel so inspired, on Twitter. My goal is to honour your hard work by retweeting/reblogging what you send, and then that way, everyone will be able to appreciate your stuff. Just be sure to let me know which category you’re entering in, and don’t post your email address or address-address—I won’t need it unless you win, and since there is SUCH TALENT in this fandom, there will be first/second/third place winners. First place is the signed ARC; second is a signed chapter sampler with the first three chapters (and a handpicked teaser from me); third place is secret snippet of a secret thing that I won’t be sending to anyone but you.

The contest will end on 8/21 and the judging will take place that week, so about two and a half months before the book comes out. If you enter, consider that an agreement not to post spoilers if you win. “KJJGBLJSBGTR^&%E$RDT” and “WTAF????!!!!” posts are cool, though.

Also: this contest IS international. Anyone can enter. And since entries will be posted publicly, and I very much want this to be a fan-led endeavour, likes, shares, RTs, comments and such will be one factor (not the only factor) in judging. I love pretty much every MD thing I see, so it feels fairer to let fans have a say in the winners to make sure I’m not paralysed by indecision.

One super last thing, for real: the ARCs are uncorrected proofs. So uncorrected that there is in fact a chapter missing, which had to be supplemented at the very last minute. I also changed a lot—like, a LOT—between the time the draft was submitted and when it went to magical ARC printing place. This is all to say: if you don’t win one, don’t worry—the final version is the version I meant for everyone to read.

Also, here’s a new snippet/teaser under the jump.

The move from hell

I’m so sorry, there won’t be a post today. I’m trying like hell for Monday, but I am currently homeless, which makes matters difficult.

Some of y'all may have caught that I’m moving. It’s been worse than my most nightmarish projections. I’ve been left to dismantle the overwhelming majority of a 12-year-old community house by myself. 17 rooms of random crap left by random people. It’s very nearly over, but I have recurrent nightmares of finding a second back yard filled with old Burning Man art projects.

I’ll be getting on the entry as soon as humanly possible.

On the upside: I’m really, really close to finalizing details on a book two. I also met with some rad Hollywood people and am in the (very early) stages of discussing an RP TV (or web) series. It’s Hollywood, so nothing happens til it happens, but if I told you the names of who I’ve been talking to, you’d probably get pretty excited. :)

All of which is to say, there may not be much motion visible right now, but things are moving.

(speaking of which, I need to get back to packing. thank you for your patience.)

bernthalls  asked:

Okay, i don't know if you read the leaked spoilers of s7 but jon and dany will have a sex scene. So...You think there's still hope for jonsa in the future? as a jon x sansa shipper im in deep shit and i need your opinion

I did read the leaks and I still believe in Jonsa happening. I don’t know if I’m a fool to believe this, but I won’t lose hope until the very end and not just because it’s my otp, but because D&D gave me the reasons why I still should believe in them ending up together, eventually.

The boatbang is likely to happen and I know it’s disheartening, especially because it sounds very OOC for Jon. But IF it’s going to happen, I hold my faith in the contextualization of the scene. I’m aware fucking is just fucking, but Jon could be doing it for various, different reasons and we still don’t know yet. The leaks gave us little info, there are still missing pieces to give more sense to the plot and maybe one of these missing pieces is the reason why d/j are possibly going to bang.

When I watched ep 1 & 2, I didn’t think immediately about how right the leaks were, but how many things were left out, and above all, how much the context changes the dynamics of one scene. For instance, the leakers depicted Jon as a complete jerk towards Sansa, as he “put her in her place” during the council and I was very scared about what I was going to watch, instead I ended up watching Jon determined and stubborn on his own decisions (as a King should do after a discussion), but totally not “putting Sansa in her place”. They discuss and talk after the council, a scene we knew nothing about, and they were basically two cupcakes confronting each other. Maybe the only rude thing was “How should I be smarter? by listening to you?” which sounded like a dick line, but as I interpreted it, I don’t think Jon meant any offense to her, but more like “you know better than me how to prepare the North against the White Walkers?”, that was the point that was poorly delivered by d&d in that scene. Jon lives in a constant fear no one believes him and maybe even Sansa thinks he’s a fool, but we know Sansa blindly believes him without any proof, unlike a certain Targaryen Queen. That scene was everything! and the reason why I believe the leaks left out so much and have no fucking idea the context of the scenes.

I will never stop speaking about the CONTEXT. It’s so important and it’s the only thing that keeps me hopeful about what will really be this quick boatbang.

As many other Jonsa shippers pointed out, they may fuck, but the Targbowl is coming in S8. D@ny in 7 seasons has come to a place of self-righteousness and has developed a sense of entitlement regarding the Iron Throne, that she won’t like one bit the minute Jon’s true parentage will be revealed to her and her right to the Throne will be undermined by him. Ep. 3, to me, foreshadowed there will be a final clash between them, not coming from Jon obviously, but D@ny herself.

Re: Jon and Sansa, D&D have been constantly given us Cat/Ned parallels throughout the first and second episode of S7. The parallels are HEAVY, blatant and so evident that no one could deny it. The writers are not even trying to be subtle anymore, they just shamelessly show us how Sansa is becoming like her mother, and how much Jon is becoming exactly like Ned. Jon and Sansa have been turning into a new, future version of Cat and Ned, the difference is that they’re still work in progress; they are still building the relationship Cat and Ned had and I strongly believe they will reach that point.

As Cat said to Robb: “Love didn’t just happen to us. We built it slowly, stone by stone, over the years.”

In Jon and Sansa’s case, they’re building a relationship of trust, support and love for each other, as they go through their own disagreements and discussions. It just doesn’t happen to them to agree on everything concerning the North and their home, it doesn’t just happen to them to be on the same page, yet they trust and love each other, learning how to rule together.

Besides, I don’t forget what happened in S6. They might be apart now, but I don’t forget their scenes together in S6 and not even the first 2 eps. of S7. it’s hard to get over that because of j/d fucking and be attracted to each other.

Jon constantly looks and stares at Sansa, as if he’s trying to figure out the woman she’s grown to be and attempting to adjust himself to this new woman that doesn’t resemble one bit the Sansa he remembered back in Winterfell. A brother does not incessantly stares at his own sister like Jon does. It’s too damn weird! Why do d&d zoom in on Jon’s reaction when Sansa speaks? when she touches him? when they’re fighting? Do they really think that’s brotherly? We might say lots of things of them, but they are no fools in their job.

Above all, I could talk about the fight in the tent in S6 where the sexual tension between them almost exploded.

I mean, WHAT WAS THIS??? the director still has to explain to me what the hell they had in mind with this shot, if they weren’t planning to let the sexual tension make it to the screen.

And the forehead kiss in 6x10 with Jon looking at her lips. Again, WHAT WAS THAT FOR? Couldn’t they just shoot a normal forehead kiss between siblings without zooming in on Jon’s face and his eyes falling on his sister’s lips like he wants to devour her mouth???

Many could tell us we’re delusional, because it never meant to be sexual, nor romantic. And that’s ok, I thought I was delusional too a year ago. Maybe it was just Kit and Sophie’s accidental chemistry that made it to the screen and thousands of fans noticed too damn well something was off and weird between these two! But then, we all start overanalyze their scenes in the year gap and we notice e.g. the zooming in on Sansa grabbing Jon’s arm, the light used during their tent scene, the fights they had like an old married couple, the constant looks that Jon throws, Ramsay’s line about Sansa being back in his bed and the close-up on Jon’s face to see his reaction to that.

Most of their scenes had a romantic undertone, and the most incredible thing is that it’s not only us as shippers, but even the media noticed it and they’ve not been subtle about Jon and Sansa becoming a couple in their own reviews.

Then, we have S7 with 2 episodes with them in it.

Sansa grabbing his arm in 7.01 and Jon looking at her like “omg she touched me, keep it cool, Jon. Keep it cool”.

Jon throwing LF against a wall and chocking him for daring to say he loves Sansa.

“I love Sansa. As I loved her mother

In that scene LF teased him with everything he had in his hands about Jon and his past, Jon forced himself to quietly listen to him and shortly responded to him with a “get the fuck out of my life” face. He was ready to leave the crypts without any harm done, but the second Petyr mentioned he loves Sansa, Jon snapped and he snapped when LF pointed out he loves her like Cat, hence on a romantic/sexual level.

And LF was like “wtf just happened?”

There are clueless reviewers who didn’t understand the scene at all, they cannot explain what that scene meant and you know why? because if you don’t have a mind the possibility of Jon and Sansa becoming a romantic couple, you just don’t get it. But it’s clear that Jon has becoming to brew romantic feelings for Sansa to the point of threatening men who admit to love her. I don’t think I could actually fully describe how excited and happy I am about this scene.

Jon has no chill when it comes to Sansa, which is weird seen from a brother pov. A brother worries and wants his sister to be careful, but never rages this way and never makes possessive statements such as “Touch my sister and I’ll kill you myself.”. That was way over any brotherly threat.

Let’s even consider how every single man that has been linked to Sansa seems quite fond to point out to Jon things extremely sexual/romantic about Sansa. WHY??? WHY TO JON OF ALL PEOPLE??

It cannot be just coincidence to write these lines. To me, there’s a bit of foreshadowing of Jon being the one having romantic feelings for Sansa and the one who will consummate the marriage with Sansa.

Are we excepting the Hound doing any comment about Sansa on a sexual/romantic level to Jon when they’re gonna meet? Hell, yes. Or I’ll be disappointed at this point.

Everything points at Jonsa being endgame. We may have them at the very end of the show, but I do believe they will end up together. D&D have done questionable choices over the course of the series, but I know when they throw hints, parallels and reminders of possible future events, they’re not doing it just for fun or to confuse the fans.

J/D is the red herring couple in S7 and maybe S8, that will lead us to the real couple: Jon and Sansa. They are the endgame.

I’m sure that whatever painful events we’re going to see this season, it’s gonna be worth it for the very end.

Signaling Vs. Seeding

Hello everyone! I’ve been meaning to make this post for awhile since I don’t see a lot of distinction between these two things when queerness is discussed in the fandom. They’re sort of used interchangeably when they’re actually wildly different things with wildly different functions. As always, it’s an opinion based on my own experiences, so you’re welcome to take it or leave it, but I haven’t seen anything discussing this particular issue before and it’s something that really bothers me, as it’s harmful and often rooted in homophobia to misconstrue queer signaling as some type of public performance and I see it being done constantly in this fandom.

Also, I use the word “queer” freely in this post as an umbrella term to mean not straight. If that offends you, quit here.
