what was the significance behind 'not anymore, simon'? what was the context? also, what on earth, harry styles??? - becks

Ah, I’ll try to put “Not anymore, Simon!” into a broader context but there was a lot going on then so I forgive me if I don’t get it quite right. Basically, it kicked off a really contentious period of time on the tour. The American leg had closed a couple weeks beforehand with the blatant attack that was the Attitude article and then the response at the Boston show (Harry’s rainbow run/speech and a fan project to create a rainbow with lights around the stadium).

London 1 was… wild. First of all, Simon was in attendance for this show. Briana was flown in there (when she hadn’t gone to any of the American shows at all even though she lives there) and purposefully walked past all the fans to sit in the VIP section. It really was not subtle, it felt like this blatant display of power to put her there.

There was a HUGE pushback from the band that night: The Bears amped things up to a level beyond anything else they’ve ever done, appearing both dressed as brides with a picture of Larry Grayson (a long closeted gay entertainer) signed “Love, Larry” with a spotlight shining on them. We’d been saying before that, “the only way the bears could be more obvious is if they put their names on them” and they did (also, the “Love, Larry” picture was removed midshow, making people wonder if they took things a little too far). The stage was lit up with rainbow lights during Girl Almighty which some people took as a nod to the rainbow light project the fans did for Boston. There was a “Louis is Harry’s Infinity” sign shown on the big screen (kind of a funny coincidence considering how Infinity got used this show!). The set list got changed around to end with Drag Me Down, quite a charged message to end on.

“Not anymore, Simon!” happened when they went to play Night Changes and had “technical difficulties”. It’s been discussed whether the technical difficulties were staged to give them a chance to break out of the usual run of the concert and create a different space where they were got to be themselves, just hanging out with the audience (I remember someone mentioning that Simon hates that sort of time wasting but idk where that rumor came from). After a few false starts, Niall is noodling around playing Infinity on his guitar (which had just been released as a free download two days earlier) and they start singing along. You can watch the video to see for yourself (interestingly, the video with the best view of Louis’ face was promptly removed from YouTube) but Louis leans over to Niall and whispers “No more!”, they laugh, and then after the line “When everybody wants you…” Niall says very clearly: “Not anymore, Simon!”. Then Louis raises his hand and kind of faux apologetically takes credit for that. There was rumor that Simon got up and left after this part of the show. No matter what, it was a shockingly direct Fuck You to him. With everything that happened that night, it really, really felt like it was game on

After this, Briana was consistently brought and made to walk past the fans night after night (who didn’t even take pictures of her at first since no one knew wtf she looked like) during the London shows while the band ignored her existence, except for an unhappy Louis sticker from the Bears. And then he went clubbing and got in a van full of only brunettes (because again, every blonde could be Briana no one could tell and he was not taking that chance) while sick (he was literally papped holding a tissue) to show that she wasn’t here with him and there was no “rekindling” of anything happening like they were trying to sell by her being there. And then a couple weeks later, the Bears came to twitter and started a countdown and the Belfast show was cancelled and… basically London 1 was the start of a much more openly hostile period and “Not anymore, Simon!” is used as the biggest symbol of that.

Chapter 13 - At the End of the Day

Words had not been necessary at the park, which was fine by Finn. He didn’t think he was very good with words, anyway. He much preferred to show people how he felt about them. When Rae had chastised herself for letting Finn do too much for her, he shook his head. Though he sometimes felt tied down and overworked in his position, he didn’t feel he could ever do enough for her. It never felt like work, helping her with the darkroom, or serving her at table. On their walk back to the house, they each glanced over at the other every few seconds. Finn couldn’t say exactly how wide his grin was, but he wouldn’t have been surprised if it actually reached ear to ear. And Rae seemed quite pleased, herself. Neither was doing a particularly brilliant job of hiding how they felt. If they rushed the walk to the park, they made up for it by taking the long, slow way back.

In between glances, Finn struggled to remember what life had been like before this girl had arrived, almost three months ago now. He was sure he must have filled his thoughts with something. Now, there was only room for one thing in his head: Rae.

When they arrived back at the house, they had to part again, like they had after the picnic. Rae smiled at him as she dragged her gaze away, pausing to shake her head before she walked up the stairs to the front door. Finn watched her until the door latched, then closed his eyes to fix the afternoon in his memory, the glint of sun on the water, the dappled shade of the trees, the feel of the breeze on his face, the lilt of Rae’s laughter, the warmth of her hand in his. He wished they had brought Rae’s camera, a photograph of the two of them together would be such a wonderful thing to have. But it wouldn’t make it any more real, he thought.

things are changin’

Alex was leaving in a couple of days and he was getting more nervous as the countdown hit only a few days away. It was happening. He was going to become a lawyer. He couldn’t wait, but at the same time, he was afraid. Alex had a family here, a life here in Camden. While his mother was gone all the time, he didn’t blame her. She was simply trying to get her mind off his father’s death and their divorce.

Sighing, he hugged his mother tightly once more before she left again for a business trip. Alex had plans with Carlie that night. They agreed that if she were to drop him off at the airport, it would just be a mess of tears. So, instead, he decided to go alone and decided to spend as much time with her and her parents before the day arrived. Alex’s room was clean, which was not normal, but he had already packed the necessities. Alex walked next door and knocked on the door; this may be the last time he would be able to do this.

Whoa, whoa, kiddo, just…first’f all, just take a deep breath.  I’m not sayin’ you aren’t calm already, but…trust me, I’ve been there.  It’ll make y’feel better, honest.

Now for th’ issue at hand…Sounds like some real heavy stuff that nobody should have t’deal with.  The people around you aren’t realizin’ that you’re a person all your own, and while you may not be able to convince ‘em, you need t’remember it yourself.  You are your own person, kid.  And cheesy as it sounds…you’re important.

Heck, don’t forget that.  It’ll keep you goin’, believe me.

Fathers…heh, fathers can be real drags sometimes, huh?  And let’s face it—under someone else’s roof, you aren’t always gonna be able t’do whatever you want whenever you want.  That’s just how life is.

But that bein’ said, who has th’ right t’walk all over your dreams, huh?  You’re into swimmin’, right?  Then even if you can’t join this specific swim team, find a way t’keep goin’!  Find a team that’s cheaper, join somethin’ connected t’your school…Heck, make a team’f your own and swim laps around your local pool if you gotta! I know it ain’t always that easy, but once your pop sees you’re dedicated, maybe he’ll finally turn around.

And even if he doesn’t, you’ll be practicin’.  Havin’ fun. Doin’ what you love, even if it’s not exactly the way y’planned it at first.

And maybe all that won’t work out, either. But kid…Listen t’me, okay?

Life’s full of dead-ends sometimes. But dead-ends are not the end, alright?  Just because you’re in a bad place now doesn’t mean you’re gonna be there forever. Things are changin’ all the time.

When those changes get bad, give yourself little things t’look forward to: Seein’ someone y’love, a new episode’f a show you like…Heck, you can even look forward to the next time you’re gonna eat your favorite dessert!

Heh…believe me, I know I do.

But bottom line, kid, you got so much t’live for.  Even when it seems like things have totally hit rock bottom, you gotta stick around t’see ‘em get better, right?

And believe me, I’ve been there, they’re gonna get so much better, no matter how much your mind tells you they won’t.

It may not be in th’ way you expect…

…But if y’just give it some time…

…You’ll find more to live for than you ever imagined.

Man in Black

by Johnny Cash

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there’s a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he’s a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you’d think He’s talking straight to you and me.

Well, we’re doin’ mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin’ cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we’re reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought ‘a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin’ for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen’ that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen’ that we all were on their side.

Well, there’s things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin’ everywhere you go,
But ‘til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You’ll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I’d love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything’s OK,
But I’ll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I’m the Man In Black.

Hey dude. Sounds t’me like you’re in a bit’f a pickle—and uh, not the tasty hamburger kind either! I wish, man.

Dude, trust me, friendship issues can be the worst sometimes.  But hey, don’t give up, bro! There’s a buncha ways to try an’ get things back on track again.

First’f all, you gotta be honest.  I know it can get kinda scary n’ stuff, but here’s the thing: your friend might not even be aware that there’s an issue, dude!  A lot’f people don’t realize they’re neglectin’ someone else or puttin’ across the wrong messages and things like that…And the last thing you want is anyone lashin’ out over a misunderstandin’, y’know, dude?

You’re not causin’ trouble if you just ask t’have a heart-to-heart one day, okay? Remember, honesty is th’ best policy!

Unless, uh, unless you’re Mr. Pines, apparently.  Accordin’ to him, his best policy is “No wallet, no purse, no service!”

Goin’ off of that, make sure you let your friend know that you do care about ‘em, dude!  Sometimes it’s easier when you’re talkin’ in person, but when you have intense conversations online and stuff, readin’ someone’s tone’f voice can get kinda tricky.  Therefore, just be sure to let ‘em know from time to time that you’re not angry—you’re just tryin’ t’set things right!

Also, never be afraid to tell someone you love ‘em.  Heh, it may be just what they need to hear, y’know?

Finally, if all that doesn’t work, sometimes you gotta look at the big picture.  Like, how do you feel after you dudes talk? Friends aren’t supposed to make other friends feel bad, so if you’re feelin’ crummy, it’s, uh, it’s not the greatest sign.

After that heart-to-heart, things should start t’change, even if it’s progressin’ slowly!  But if nothing’s changin’ at all, somethin’ might not be goin’ so great.

I know it’s a little different, but even though I used t’love gettin’ contacted by my dad, his letters always made me feel real bad afterwards.  He may not have realized that he was bein’ neglectful, but either way, things weren’t changin’ for the better, dude.

If you’re feelin’ like that at all, whether it’s with family or friends, it might help to take a little break.

It may hurt a bit at first, bro, but it really gives you both time to think, heal…and maybe even reconnect in th’ future!

Bottom line, though—whatever happens, keep your head up, dude.  You’re worth way too much to ever be replaced, trust me!  Plus, you like, totally deserve t’feel good in your friendships n’ stuff.  I mean, heh, that’s exactly what friends are for after all, dude!

And like I said, don’t be afraid t’be honest, okay?  Dude, believe me, if there’s one thing I know about good friends…

…It’s that they’re usually th’ ones who truly understand.
