The family I’m staying with is fabulously nerdy.
There are maps of Middle Earth on the walls. Inigo Montoya’s famous speech adorns my bedroom door. They quote Star Wars and Star Trek and Galaxy Quest constantly.
And the other day the father and son came home while I was in the living room working on the computer. Five minutes went by without either of them saying anything, and then the son said, out of the blue, “Besides, the Valar aren’t gods. Godlike, sure. Terrible and frightening, absolutely. But not gods.”
And just like that, he and his father were off on a rousing discussion of the Silmarillion while I sat there and reevaluated my life.
