What is the Aila test?
The Aila Test is just a lens for analyzing and criticizing Native women in media ( similar to the Bechdel Test but with it’s own set of rules ) based on the ongoing and overused tropes used for Native characters.
To pass the Aila Test, the story in question must abide by these rules:
1. An Indigenous / Aboriginal woman MUST be the main character…
2. Who DOES NOT fall in love with a white man…
3. And DOES NOT end up raped or murdered at any point in the story.
You’d be surprised how many do not pass this test, but you’d probably be pleasantly surprised with the ones that do!
(And I love your articles, especially the Myths about Pocahontas where you cited the sacred Mattaponi oral history! Thanks for following this blog!)
