Responding to the panic over the confirmation of a fictional same-sex kiss or sexual orientation reveal with “don’t worry! we don’t know this means they’re gay! bisexuals exist! they might not be 100% gay!” masquerades as progressive but is absolutely offensive to both gay and bi people and only benefits homophobes. The people who were upset about seeing Tracer kiss a girl were not bisexuals craving representation, they were straight people trying to make it possible for her to still have a hetero relationship. If you’re saying “bisexuals exist” as a way to comfort people who are upset about two girls or two guys being together, then you aren’t doing bisexuals any favors or combating erasure. You’re throwing both gay and bi people under the bus for the benefit of homophobes’ fragile feelings.
