Resources for Discreet Magic

* not my choice of title

it’s not a big deal but my entire life when i was funny i was sassy. i think about that a lot. about how sometimes my brother would tell the same stories, same inflections, same characters - but he was clever, he was funny. i was just… sassy. my sarcasm and sharp tongue and wit were always whittled down into kind of a bitch. when he was the class clown or a riot or a great guy, i was a problem student who couldn’t shut up, a disruption, an attention whore. i talked less than him. kept the ice to a minimum. pulled the bow of my arrow voice a little shorter than he did. he could step over lines and dance between them with entire rooms laughing. but when i did that, i was kind of full of myself. i was seen as loud, overly dramatic; my humor too dark or too quick or too feminine.

there’s power in making people laugh. it draws you into them. it’s a good thing to feel you’re making someone happy. i watch boys at parties who are so funny and everyone loves him and how they cackle and howl and never worry they’re taking up too much of their audience’s attention. how when i chime in, when i’m just as funny - if not funnier than them - all hell breaks loose. how fast they get vicious to me. how fast they turn their comments onto my personality. how fast they scramble to be the center of attention again: in an instant, the funny stories become snide comments. and i’m quiet again.

sassy girl gets told to sit down. she gets called up to the front of the class because oh, if you’re so smart, why don’t you teach the lesson. sassy girl gets cast as villain in all her musicals, because princesses don’t use the bitterness in their souls. sassy is ugly ursula, is wicked witch, is snide sidekick. sassy girl makes you laugh when you’ve been crying so much you feel sick. sassy girl listens to you while you spill your secrets, knows when to make a joke and when to take thing serious. tell the cuban girl she’s sassy, watch her eyes roll, watch her heat up, use that latin anger that whips in octopus tentacles out of her. she takes everything so seriously. she needs to calm down, practice ladylike, less swears and less blasphemy and less sassy.

my brother easily relates to “funny.” my brother and most boys i know pride themselves on their humor. they know they can throw a comment into the air and have it stick to the wall of their peers, they know even if it doesn’t land, everyone will just cover their ears. it’s not a big deal. it’s just if you have two people in equal situations, like a brother and a sister both with the same shared timing and humor and stories - some even stolen from each other word for word and with exact phrasing - and if one of those people is treated differently, usually something strange is happening. it’s not a big deal. it’s just i don’t really ever hear girls called funny.

Problems with the Witchblr Community

There are some serious fucking problems occurring on this website, like:

  1. Peoples’ grimoires are way too artistic. Like seriously you all need to tag that shit like “hey this may trigger you because this Van Gogh beautifully-crafted art style might blind you and gush your morality with its beauty and cause your perspective of your own grimoire/BOS to wilt like a flower on fire”. I don’t take the time to even update my BOS, never mind decorate it with these gorgeous illustrations.
  2. The quality of pictures are way too high. I don’t know where people are getting all these professional cameras. Like I take pictures with my phone or shitty Samsung and post them, and I know I wouldn’t even reblog that shit, the quality is way too low. This results in a standard of high quality Instagram-worthy pictures that is too high for me to keep up with, y’all need to lower your photography skills.
  3. Peoples’ altars are too perfectly positioned in the sunlight, like bathing in the holiness of the sun or moon and washing any of vestige of mortality away from that spot. This kinda weaves into the photography complaint but basically, y’all stop being so artsy.
  4. Digital sigils are too easily and perfectly displayed. I don’t know how people make those sigils, it’s like an elusive angelic society that just sprinkles down talent and useful spells like falling stars. Seriously y’all need to post a how-to on that shit because I don’t have a tablet and just take pictures of hand-drawn sigils, but even those who post their hand-drawn sigils draw them incredibly better than I draw my sigils.
  5. The witches on this site are way too creative. They’re all thinking of tips and techniques I never thought of before, and it makes everyone else feel dumb because they didn’t think of them first.
  6. Pretty much every witch on this site seems to have a green thumb. They say taking care of plants doesn’t require a green thumb, but I beg to differ because pretty much every plant I own dies. Like I don’t know if it’s because I’m a death witch and am literally radiating death energy, but I can’t keep plants alive for my own life. Green witches gotta share their real secrets, HOW are you keeping your plants alive.
  7. Then there are some problems like elitism, transphobia, homophobia, racism, nazism, blatant disrespect for peoples’ religions and cultures, the hatred with which we argue, and the fear that I’m always being scrutinized and that no matter what I say extreme SJWs will cherry-pick the things I say and misconstrue my argument into something i never said in the first place so i might as well just not even say my opinion on anything which i’m doing right now so i’ll just shut up and continue the joke
  8. The spooky and ethereal Witch Aesthetic™ is too on point. All the hanging herbs and lit candles and smoke from incense are too entrancing and immediately calm my mood and cause me to daydream about the eloquence of the witchy aesthetic. It’s too romanticized. It causes me to enjoy my own craft too much, and I reblog too many of them. We need to cut those down by a bunch.

Just had to get that off my chest.

Tips for Witches Keeping Their Practice Secret

Some of my witchy friends keep their practice secret for various reasons, so here’s a handful of tips for witches trying to do the same!

-Take up an interest in stones/zodiac/plants/etc
-Design your altar inside a shoebox that can easily be closed and hidden away
-Drink lots and lots of tea
-Dress or paint your nails in corresponding colors
-Use a cleansing spray as perfume/air freshener
-Use herbs when you cook for correspondences
-Stir things clockwise
-If you’re not a tea fan, use ingredients in your coffee corresponding with intent/goal for the day (ie cinnamon or mint for luck/prosperity, sugar for a sweet day, etc)
-Take advantage of various mundane tools (cosmic witches can use galaxy themed objects, art witches can use paint water for potions and things, green witches can use a rake as a broom, so on.)
-Cleanse and clean at the same time! Wash negative energy off your floors/dishes, sweep away negativity, etc.)
-Incense is a relatively normal thing nowadays, and candles are always cool. Carve symbols into candles, use incense according to scent to cleanse or whatever
-Draw sigils in places that are difficult to see: purse, wallet, shoes, etc
-Enchant/charm various items you use daily (charm your keys so that they’re difficult to use
-If you don’t mind not speaking aloud, speak spells in your head
-Store your supplies in places where people won’t go, such as under your bed or in the back of your closet.
-If you’re making moon/star/sun water, leave it in a plastic water bottle. Of anyone asks, tell them you’re just a little messy and forgot to put it away or something.
-Make spell jars look like galaxy jars, candle holders, etc and people will be much less suspicious
-If someone asks, tell them sigils are just random doodles/made up language/brand symbol/etc
-Open up your windows as much as possible to let in natural light/fresh air!
-Dress your house will pictures of the moon/planets/stars/patron god/goddess/etc because ~aesthetic~
-Make your grimoire/BoS/whatever you like to call it look like a notebook, document, file, or something else relatively unsuspicious
-Remember that you are a wonderful, qualified witch no matter what type of witchcraft you practice

I honestly love being a witch.

❈ I draw love, comfort, and strength from nature, the elements, deities (if I choose), and spirits.

❈ I have a secret, one that most people don’t know about me.

❈ I understand myself better than I ever had before.

❈ I feel magical, mysterious, and enchanted when I make magic.

❈ I can divine the future, the present, and the past, and find the truth of a situation to guide myself and others.

❈ My familiar is adorable and one of my best friends. Same for my spirit guide.

❈ I can protect myself and those I love from unseen forces.

❈ There is no better feeling than feeling “witchy.”

A Witch’s Guide to Showering:

In today’s busy world, it can be hard to have 5 minutes to yourself to cleanse and ground your energies, but fear not – the shower can be a great place to do this.

When you are underneath the water, you can envision it cleansing you and washing all the negativity from you down the drain. The water can be incredibly refreshing and grounding too. Taking a few minutes to close your eyes and stand under the soothing water and calm your mind and breathing can be really good for you - spiritually, emotionally, physically and mentally.

If the shower uses rainwater, you’ll receive its rejuvenating, protective, inspiring, creativity-boosting - maybe that’s why we have great ideas in the shower ;D - and cleansing energies.

If you’re using town water like me, don’t worry about the water being ‘impure’ or ‘not as natural and spiritually cleansing as rain.’ I like to think of town water as a symbol of unity. After all, hundreds or possibly thousands of people in your town / city use it for everything from cooking and drinking to watering their gardens and washing their clothes and selves. Makes it seem more powerful when you put it in that light, huh? Don’t underestimate it, folks – it’s still water and water is powerful.

As a secret witch, I find the bathroom a good and private place for a few low-key workings. I often wear my favourite, (waterproof) crystal necklace and cleanse it with the water and my own cleansed energies. I also fill empty lip gloss containers with the warm water and add a few little bits and bobs like petals, leaves or even pieces of recently-dried tree sap to make infusions. They can be used later to cleanse small things like crystals, candles or even to anoint yourself. ! Make sure if you do use infusions you do not drink them unless they are fresh and you are certain that the plants you used aren’t dangerous in any way !. Lip gloss containers are great for the secret witch because they are inconspicuous and small enough to slip in your pocket. Just don’t let anyone mistake them for actual lip gloss!

Also, make sure you wash your body in the shower (kind of obvious, but oh well). Remember that physical hygiene and cleansing is just as important as spiritual cleansing, and it’ll help you feel fresh, bright and a million dollars – great for yo’ self-esteem.

Blessed be, lovelies. Hope this gave you a new appreciation of the bathroom!

Soul-Mate AU
Part 1 of my Marked Series on AO3
Note: This is my very first drabble I have officially posted on AO3!! I hope to do longer drabbles like this now along with headcanons, so I would really appreciate the support. Harry and Pansy’s story will be posted next. Thanks so much for always being there to read my stuff! You are all fantastic. x

The first thing Hermione read when she found out she was a witch was a book on soul-mates. It was the one she was drawn to when she faced her first wizarding bookshelf in Flourish and Blotts. She found the theory that wizards had one true love laughable at first, until she let her secret sappy romantic heart take over. It gave her something to look forward to, it gave her hope for a connection she always yearned for.

She had spent most of her life feeling so misunderstood, would this be the answer? Would it really be like finding her other half? What would her mark look like? Would it actually happen, or was it truly just a theory?

It was amazing to her that when you touched your soul-mate for the first time, you went through an excruciatingly painful process. As soon as your skin met, the skin over your heart would be cut into a symbolic mark representing your soul-mate. As years would pass, it would darken with age until it was black. It was supposed to represent that true love never dies, because your mark would never leave. It would become a part of you forever.

Although this phenomena had apparently existed since the beginning of wizard-kind, it was still considered theoretical. It was hard to prove if your mark was real or just a tattoo, because some people would get tattoos to convince others that their relationship was true. It became a way of proving your love to the world, but most people that were truly marked did not share their marks with everyone. It was private, and they liked to keep it a secret with their soul-mate.

Hermione could only conclude that finding your true soul-mate was a rare occurrence, and she hated herself for feeling false hope, but she couldn’t help it. She wanted to find someone that understood her unconditionally, because no one in the muggle-world ever understood her, not even her parents. She learned quickly during her first two years at Hogwarts that most people in the wizarding world didn’t understand her, either. Maybe she was always meant to be misunderstood, but that did not stop Hermione from trying to make contact with as many people as possible. All she had was hope.

Hey, I read you answered questions on witchcraft and I'm just about starting out on being a witch and I'm just kinda lost. How do I find out what kind of a witch I am, for example? And what about room decor, plants, drying herbs, crystals, sigils and others? How do I even start being a witch?Do you have any websites or blogs (or tips?) that could help me out? Thank you ♡ x

Hi there!

You find out what kind of witch you are, by deciding what kind of witchcraft you want to practice. Most people just choose what they want to be, based off what they like, what they feel drawn to, or just what they want to do. [Here] is a list of types of witches that might inspire you / help you get started on finding a type of magic you want to work with first. This list is not extensive, and what you choose you aren’t stuck with forever - you can try other things, combine things, whatever you want to do! Witchcraft is super personal, and it’s all for you, by you. You also don’t need to confine your magic to any singular label; you can choose more than one to work with.

I picked sigil magic to start with, for example, because it seemed easy, and I knew I could draw; it also required very little supplies, and it also honestly seemed the least likely to backfire. xD My craft eventually evolved into eclectic magic, because I began using a bit of everything else (crystals, herbs, candles, etc.) in my magic to get what I needed.

As for room decor, that’s up to you. You don’t need it, though. You don’t need to *look* witchy to *be* witchy. If you need to be on the down low about your magic, you don’t have to draw huge pentacles on your walls or wear all black or anything like that to still have magic work. What makes you a witch or magic user is what’s inside you, not around you (it can help but, you know, not required). But, if you want to make your room look “witchy,” whatever that means to you, go right for it. But I don’t think it will impact your magic in any way. (I don’t view altars / magical work spaces as decor - they are more than just decorations.)

In regards to plants, it’s another case of if you want to. All my herbs I get pre-dried in grocery stores and bulk stores, because I can’t grow plants worth squat. I’ve taken fresh herbs from grocery stores, actually, that’s a lie, but they were already grown, and I just hung them in my window to dry them. If you want to try growing your own herbs, feel free, but it isn’t necessary - pre-dried and store bought have worked perfectly for me for the last two years. (I also don’t know anything about growing herbs or gardening, so you’d need to go elsewhere for those answers.)

Working with crystals and sigils are optional - they can prove beneficial, but if you don’t want to do that, you don’t need to.

Working with *anything* is optional, when you get right down to it - all these things, candles, herbs, crystals, are just amplifiers and focuses for magic. You can perform witchcraft with just your own body, energy, and intent. You just need to know how. (P.S. [energy work] is how.)

Doing your own research will never go amiss, let me tell you that right now. I know it can seem daunting, and you don’t know where to start, but seriously, just a Google search of “witchcraft crystal magic” or “witchcraft sigil magic” can pull up a lot of information and give you more ideas of where to go that you can follow on your own. (I really recommend specifying “witchcraft” when searching on the internet, because you might get a lot of pop culture links that just aren’t relevant, or a variety of other articles that might not be applicable.)

You start being a witch by deciding you want to be a witch. Boom, congratulations, welcome to witchcraft! :D From there, it’s going to be a lot of research. Research will help you determine more about witchcraft in general, and from there you can decide what you want to do with it. Once you have an idea of things you might want to try - working with crystals, herbs, sea magic, etc. - you can do more focused research on those topics.

Once you have an idea of what you want to do, try it out. Give some things a shot and practice. Write down what you try, so if it doesn’t work or things go wrong, you can look back and think “what if I try this instead?.” and then try it. It really is all about experimentation. You will make mistakes, spell may not work - it is something that has happened to us all, and likely will again. Nothing is perfect and neither is magic. Don’t be daunted, though - you are new to it, it will take some time to get the hang of and build your confidence up. Just stay positive, and remember that mistakes are learning experiences, and help define you more as witch. Never give up. The magic is inside you, you just need to find the right way to work with it.

Casting a circle

Casting a circle is a thing many witches do before they preform magick to protect them from any unwanted visitors or energies, it also keeps your powerful magick and energy inside the circle to make your magick stronger.
Please note this is just my method of casting circles not all witches and Wiccan’s do it the same.

1. Sweep away air in your room with a broomstick or using your hands in a sweeping motion
2. Mix water and salt together then sprinkle around yourself in a circle - this represents earth and water elements
3. Burn sage or incense around you in the same circular motion - the burning of this represents fire and the smoke represents air
4. Now lay down your stone, crystals, salt ect. In a circle
5. Call upon your god or goddess you which to watch over you
6. Start at east and point your wand and say “element of air I call upon you to watch over me and this circle”
7. Turn to south and say “element of fire I call upon you to watch over me and this circle”
8. Turn to west and say “element of water I call upon you to watch over me and this circle”
9. Turn to north and say “element of earth I call upon you to watch over me and this circle”
10. Then turn to face east again and this time point your wand up to the sky and say “element of spirit I call upon you to watch over me and he circle”
11. Then you’ve cast your circle! Go ahead now and preform any spells or rituals you wish! Just remember to always close your circle after you are finished

Happy enchanting ✨🌙

So I read this post a while ago about adding your witchy side to your bullet journal and I thought it was such a wonderful idea! (Forgive me, I don’t know where the original post is)
I thought I’d share how I’m using my bullet journal to aid me in my practice!

• Adding tarot & meditation to my habit tracker.
• Keeping track of the moon phases & when full, new & eclipses occur.
• Planning when to cast spells to the corresponding day and/or moon phase.
• Adding witchy supplies to my errand list(or wants & needs lists if you have those).
• Things to research.
• Adding my weekly tarot readings, and I’m going to try shortly recording a daily card I pull for myself with only a couple words or so.

It’s good for secret witches too! I hope this inspires you if you use bullet journals, and maybe it will aid you in your craft as it has in mine✨ We all know life is hectic on its own, and then we have to go and charge our crystals, make moon water & cleanse our homes regularly!

Best of luck my friends🥀

Hey! So 1) I just got around to bottling up my supplies (flower petals, herbs, and one giant thing of salt) and 2) this is the witchy stuff I’ll be bringing to college! The box my friend got me works pretty well as a secret altar, and I’ll bring some extra bottles and jars too. Hopefully they survive the trip up.

I'm a closeted cottage witch any tips✨

Woaaah, baby do I. Of course none of this is necessary to be a witch but fun little things I enjoyed when I lived at home and still some things I love doing because they’re just pleasant!

  • So there’s this app called Viridi, you can get on your phone or computer. Basically, you grow a pot of succulents from seed and other cute stuff like you can name it and choose which plants you want in it. It’s also good for low spoon witches because it only takes a few minutes a day to water it and such!
  • Drink tea or coffee! Coffee is a great morning routine for grounding and you can say a little incantation when stirring in milk or sugar. The same goes for tea you can align the herbs and flavors to whatever properties you need in your life that day.
  • Paint your nails or wear make up that matches your intent. Bonus enchant your make up or jewelry with glamours or protection spells.
    • I’m just going to throw in here that I think bath magic is great and if you can DO IT.
  • When you clean your room cleanse it at the same time. If you’re a fan of cleansing by scent essential oil diffusers are pretty casual as are candles (my parents were always weird about incense).
  • Keep a small notebook or sketchbook with you, you can play it off casually but keep it a grimoire, a place to take notes, or doodle your sigils. I have a small one I take everywhere that’s filled with travel/protection sigils and things I tend to need to know on the fly(but don’t).
  • If you can’t have an altar out in the open you can always make one in a shoe box. Or you can make a side blog to use as an altar.
  • Make a playlist! Songs that you make you feel confident, powerful, and witchy.

I hope this helps a little sweet pea!💞

anonymous asked:

You may have answered this already but do you have tips on how to do witchcraft w limited resources? I have no way to get things like vanilla, or certain spices/herbs and the area I live in doesn't have many of the more common flowers w magical significance (roses for example). I'm also not allowed to light candles or get candles of different colors (But I do light white candles secretly). And ideas?

Honestly I haven’t used vanilla once in my practice. Ingredients that people say are “necessary” may be for them, but that shouldn’t reflect on you or your practices. If you can’t get it, or even have no reason to use it, don’t bother tbh.

When it comes to things like herbs, it is very easy to find replacements for them regarding correspondences. With vanilla, depending on the properties it has, it could be substituted with something else that also has those associations. It might be slightly different energy-wise, but I wouldn’t think too much so, especially if you don’t think so.

At that point it becomes important to work with what you have. Find out what your area does have, maybe even naturally, then find out what you can do with those things, and go from there.

If you are able, spices and herbs are also available for purchase online. Dollar stores even carry a selection of herbs and spices now (at least, the ones in my area do). Bulk Barns also has a great selection, and super cheap too (I just got good sized bags rock salt, pink Himalayan salt, rubbed sage, and I think mint there for less than $4).

However, you also don’t need herbs if you don’t want them. That is just one area of spellwork, and if you have difficulties accessing herbs, go for something you are able to do / have access to.

As for candles, white is pretty much all purpose. LED candles are also an option. There are even websites that allow for the burning of digital candles that can be used too, and there are also some cell phone apps that offer the same thing - tech magic for the win!

Otherwise, I’d suggest using [energy work] or [sigils], which are both low supply and also really discreet.

Here are some posts that may contain more ideas of things you may be able to do, if you so desire:
