they also did this awesome thing where they pointed out what i left out

Some of these will not apply to many people so pls take them with a grain of salt. Also I’ve been collecting these pretty much for the two years I’ve been in college so it’s not a guide, they’re just… random I guess.

Making friends

Warning - specially tailored for super shy people aka me

  • There’s a thing called the ‘first week window of endless oportunities’. It’s when groups are still forming and everyone’s desperate to make friends. This is the time to put your best self forward (I’m not saying be fake, just a little extra friendly).
  • Leave. Your. Door. Open. Do it. Even if you have a roommate. Best way to make friends the first week.
  • Actually get out of your room. You’re not going to meet many people if you hole up in your room. If you have a tv room or people are watching a movie, I don’t care if you’re not interested in what they’re watching, go.
  • If you have the balls to go to the room nextdoor and introduce yourself then you probably can skip this section by all means do it!
  • But if you don’t, going from door to door asking for help with your laundry takes a lot less courage + you will learn how to do laundry. Asking to borrow something (pencil, hair tie, hair dryer) also works.
  • If you’re staying at a residence hall, ask to sit with people at lunch! Nobody is going to say no, i promise.
  • Similarly if you see someone alone, ask them to have lunch with you!
  • Also if you meet someone you get along with, as soon as you can, ask for their number ‘so you can go to the dinning hall together’.
  • Remember people’s names - it makes people feel like you actually care about them. I know it’s hard but make an effort. Also it just gets annoying when someone asks about your name for the fourth time. Use mnemonics if you have to.
  • Asking what someone’s major is and where they’re from is standard procedure when you meet them but it doesn’t make for an interesting conversation. Think of other questions!
  • Make sure to arrive about 10 min early to your classes. There’ll be very few people and so it’ll be easier to strike up a conversation (actually people will probably talk to you without you having to say anything which is g r e a t)
  • Say yes - as a rule of thumb, your social life should prevail over your academic life the first two weeks. This is the time where you’re not really pressed for time. Say yes to watching movies, say yes to going to lunch, say yes to going to campus events (and even to parties). Obviously don’t do anything that makes you really unconfortable but do try to step out of your comfort zone
  • Make friends with an upper-classman from your same major. Or at least be on speaking terms. Talk to them on Facebook, ask them about your major, just use any random idc excuse to introduce yourself, it doesn’t really matter how you do it.
  • Don’t go home every weekend, even if you live close by. You’ll miss out on the best of campus life and some of the most fun memories with your new friends.

Keeping your old friends

  • If you know you’re going home for the weekend, try to finish most of your assignments/studying and make time to hang out with your friends. Spending time with them is the best way to keep those friendships alive.
  • But! Don’t worry too much if you can’t come home or make time for your friends too often, you just have to make an effort to text them regularly. It will come naturally if it’s your best friend, but don’t forget to set a reminder to text other close friends at least once every two weeks.
  • You may think you don’t care now but you will once you come home for the summer.
  • If any of your friends are staying in your hometown for college, be ready for them to get another friend group. That doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten about you, but don’t be mad if they seem to have a lot more plans that don’t involve you. You can always ask to tag along some time and maybe even become friends with these people!
  • Some people you’ll just lose contact with. Don’t fret it.

Organization

  • Please print out or buy a calendar that has a whole page for each month. With boxes preferably *shameless plug*. You may think you have it all under control but there’s nothing like being able to see all your due dates, hang out plans and laundry days at a glance. (Also js but the pilot frixion are perfect to use on calendars because they’re erasable).
  • There’s so much space under your bed. UTILIZE IT.

Why the SPN mixtape scene from 12x19 is screenwriting gold, and should be taught to the next generations of screenwriters everywhere - analysis

20 seconds. Two lines of dialogue, three gestures, a couple more camera angles. Episode 19, season 12 of a genre TV show “Supernatural”. A single strike of screenwriting and cinematic genius. The mixtape scene.

Robert Berens and Meredith Glynn, I bow before you.

This scene should be used as an example for future screenwriters how you can put maximum of meaning into minimal time and dialogue. Should be analyzed and taught at universities everywhere, how to achieve the most using the least. How to write for TV, where you only have less than an hour to built something spectacular.

WOW.

Let’s just peel off all the layers of these 20 seconds of footage and these 13 words. 13 WORDS.

(Cas knocks, Dean doesn’t say anything. Cas opens the door, apologizes for disturbing Dean in his room, and then takes a cassette tape out of his left inside coat pocket, and puts it on the desk, while tapping the label on it that says “Deans (sic!) top 13 Zepp traxx”.)

Cas: Um, I just wanted to return this.

Dean: It’s a gift. You keep those.

13 tracks. 13 words. The future. So number thirteen is important for the future. I mean, are you trying to tell us something here, writers?

(Dean takes the tape, oustreches his arm, and gives it back to Cas. We see Cas’ hand grabbing the tape, and taking it back.)

That tiny scene is ENORMOUS from the perspective of the narrative and the characterization. Let’s see what we can get out of it. (Prepare yourself: it’s gonna be long. Damn, how much meta can you write based on 20 seconds of television and two lines of dialogue?) (Hint: A lot.)

7 Reasons Why

So…. I am currently watching the new tv show “13 Reasons Why” and my mind decided to make a tragically-beautiful connection tooooo can you guess what?? YUP LANCE!! So here are my thoughts once again… hope you enjoy and feel free to comment any other ideas!!
*NOTE* I’m lowkey crying as I’m writing this. My heart isn’t okay. I’m not okay, okay?? *MORE NOTES* So this came out kinda different than the show/book but i hope yall kinda get the idea

  • Lance was dead. Had committed suicide to be exact. And he left his story behind.
  • The tapes appeared from nowhere. No one knew where they came from or where they disappeared to. No one knew that the tapes contained so much in such a small amount of time. No one knew that these tapes would become an ugly part of them.
  • “Hello space pals and gals. Lance McClain (KINDA LOVE THIS LAST NAME) here. Live and in stereo.”
  • Lance starts off by explaining his “7 Reasons Why” (hahaha get it? Cuz he’s the seventh wheel?? *cries*) he committed suicide and his two rules.
    • “Rule number one. You must listen to the tapes. I’m not gonna lie. This is going to be hard to do but you MUST LISTEN.”
    • “Rule number two. When you are done, you must leave them where you found them. And if you, oh lets say, decide to throw them away, tsk tsk tsk…. bad things will happen.”
  • “First and foremost, our mighty and heroic leader, Shiro.”
    • “I wasn’t good enought to be praised by you.” Lance explains that Shiro was a good leader, a great leader one might say. Unreplacable, “unlike me.” So why was it that he never told Lance “great job” or “thanks for the help.” Why did he alway care so much for Keith? Told him “great job out there” and patted him on the back after every battle. Why did he always take his side even when he was in the wrong? Why did he treat Pidge like a little sister? Always taking care of them and making sure they were getting enough sleep. Always being so nice and caring to both. “You were always my hero but why did you not act like it?” He never payed attention when Lance didnt get enough sleep or didnt eat or was sick. Always making him work and train. Always pointing out his flaws without helping him improve them. “Why, Shiro, did you not care for me?”
  • “Can you guess our number two?? Well, I’ll give you a hint. It’s not me this time. *laughs* First time being number two, our excellent number one paladin, Keith!”
    • “Keith my man, I loved you.” (Klangst? WHY TF NOT?!?) Lance always loved Keith, always looked up to him too. He loved to joke around with him, loved to rile him up, loved to bicker with him because thats how he got to talk to him. He knew that they were playing around so why did it hurt so much? “Why Keith, did you always tell me I wasn’t good enough?” Always telling him to leave you alone, always “you’re annoying me” and never “please stay.” Keith always reminded Lance that he was never good enough, never up to his level, never realizing how lance felt. But how could Lance blame him? However, sometimes Keith, you, took it to far to the point where my heart was too broken to put back together. “I’ve always loved you but you made it so easy to hate you, too.”
  • “My favorite green paladin, my little space sister (female pronouns for this), my gaming buddy, Pidge.”
    • “Pidge, did you even ever realize that I saw you as my sister?” Lance saw his little sister in Pidge. He always, like Shiro, did his best to make sure they stayed healthy. He was always fussing over her eating and sleeping habits. So why did she never appreciate him? “Pidge, you never even said thanks you.” Lance just wanted to be a brother to her. So why did she make him a disposable replacement for her missing brother? Always using him when necessary and then throwing him away when it got too much for her? “Leave me alone Lance. Im working.” Pidge sometimes said really hurtful comments to Lance and she never let him help her because why would she let someone “annoying” help? In, reality Pidge was his sister but according to Pidge, “You are not my brother, Lance. Matt is.”
  • “Hunk, my precious beautiful friend. You did nothing wrong but you also did nothing at all.”
    • “Where to start?” Hunk had always been Lance’s best friend but after Voltron things changed. “I noticed that you and Pidge would hang out together, without me.” Lance just wants to be part of their group again. He tried so hard so join, to contribute, to help. But all he got was “you’re distracting us.” Although they didn’t hang out as much, Hunk was the first one to realize that something was wrong with Lance. “You left me alone.” Hunk saw him getting worse and changing throughout the days. He saw but didn’t do anything. “Hunk, why did you not do anything, if you noticed?” Lance wondered why Hunk left him by himself, why he didn’t try to reach out to him, why he didn’t invite him over, why didn’t he? “You could have helped but you didn’t.”
  • “Our beautiful space princess who will save the universe without moi, Allura.”
    • “Sometimes, your pushing for perfection was too much, not just for me but for everyone.” Lance always felt like the odd one out. Everyone was good at something but he never had a “thing” and Allura’s nagging didn’t help. “Keep up Lance!” Keep up with Keith in the training stimulator. Keep up with Pidge’s new machinery. Keep up with Shiro’s battle plans. Keep up with Hunk’s nee inventions. Keep up. “Again.” No matter how hard Lance tried, Allura was never satisfied. Never complementing him, never saying “good job,” never letting him rest, never telling he was good enough. “Why, Allura, did you never see how hard I was trying?”
  • “Lets talk about our seventh wheel, our number one *snickers* sharpshooter, Me! Lance!”
    • “In my opinion, I was the number one at fault for this occurrence.” Lance hated himself. He hated himself for feeling jealous, angry, sad, homesick, depressed. “I just wanted to be like the rest of you all.” Lance wanted to be as good as Keith and as strong as Shiro. He wanted to be as nice and comforting as Hunk. Wanted to be as smart as Pidge and as powerful as Allura. “I wish I wasn’t so selfish.” Lance thought he was selfish. He wished to get “thanks you’s” from the rest. Wished he get praised from Shiro and Allura. Wished Keith would feel the same way. Wished he was home with his famiy. He wished and wished and he hated it. “I wished I was home.”
  • “My favorite alien, Coran, the one who took care of me and who noticed me struggling. Yes, he tried to help but I guess it wasn’t enough since I’m dead now.”
    • “You let me walk away.” Coran tried helping Lance in his own way. But how could an alien understand some Earthly emotions? “We talked but sometimes it was just you talking.” Coran tried to get Lance to open up to him but failed. He always cut off Lance with his own stories so he never let Lance say what was bothering him. “Coran, you were like an uncle to me.” Coran reminded Lance of his uncle and it kinda hurt him. He was constantly reminded of his family whenever he was with Coran. This made his emotions even worse when he talked to Coran because sometimes Coran didn’t understand him. The day Lance died, Coran had told him to just “move on.” Lance just got up and left but he secretly hoped that Coran would come after him. He didn’t. “You wanted me to move on from this and I did.”
  • “I’m sorry.”

I’ve seen a lot of ideas about humans being on alien ships, and most are like “because of [whatever reason], it would be good if ships had one human on board” and there are a lot of stories that say that there’s only one human on the alien ship. But I don’t think that’s a good idea?? A lot of people have a hard time being a foreign exchange student a country where they don’t speak the language; I don’t think most humans could handle being the only human on an alien ship???? For various reasons, like loneliness/medical issues/etc. Being on an alien ship sounds awesome, but they wouldn’t have any support.

Maybe aliens don’t understand THAT; “Despite being capable enough on their own, humans have to come in groups of 2+ for some reason.”

“Let the humans choose their own groups; their social systems are much more complex, and despite their famous ability to socialize with just about any other species, if two humans ‘don’t get along’, meaning that they cause each other to have unfavorable emotions and occasionally will not cooperate, the result is negative for both the humans and the crew that they reside in.”

Maybe something like this?

The first time humans and the recently-contacted alien species “X”, the first to form an alliance with humans, attempt to team up, everyone realizes that they need to learn more about each other. They decide that should should be a simple exchange of personnel; these crewmen would work simple jobs on each other’s ships and interact with the crew in order to learn more about each other and how to successfully communicate. Both humans and Xs desperately want this to succeed. But, hearing rumors of the humans’ prowess, the X want to minimize any possible casualties, so they suggest that they exchange just one person each at the start; one X heads to the human command ship, and one human heads to the X’s.

Everything begins successfully.

The X on board the human ship is a model worker. It observes, asks questions, and when it doesn’t understand something, many humans surround and brainstorm ideas on how to explain things to it. Throwing out ideas left and right “It’s a bit like seeing color, but it’s invisible, and through the nose-” “No you idiot, it’s like those feel-auras it was talking about, but the nose is the sensory organ for it-” and eventually the X understands. In turn, when contributing ideas not easily understood by humans, it finds that many take this as a challenge, and will not stop bothering the X until they are sure that they understand. But with or without the aid of its new crewmates, the X never seems distressed that it can’t understand or be understood by others.

The human crew quickly notices that the X has not contacted its main ship, or for that matter, anyone else.

“Have you tried talking to your ship?”

“There was no need to try, I already know it won’t work because of conflicting signals.”

“Well, did you need to? Talk to your friends or family or anything? I’m sure I can rig something up if you need to.”

“I have no need to communicate with anyone as of now. Any information that will eventually need to be communicated will be included in my report to the High Command.”

“No, but did you WANT to talk to anyone? Like your family or something, so they know you’re okay? And I mean, I’m sure you must want to talk about how weird we humans are and stuff, right?”

“My family will be notified of my status when I return to the High Command. And all data I gather on humans will be included in my report.”

The X, despite being so far away from home and surrounded by pushy humans, does not seem homesick or lonely at all.

On the X’s ship, the human is enthusiastic and excited to learn new things at first. After all, they’re learning about and interacting with ALIENS; it’s freaking awesome. But it doesn’t take too long for the novelty to wear off and the human to realize that they are truly alone. No one else speaks a human language, or is physically capable of doing so. While translation technology makes communication possible, linguistic differences make both exact or truly accurate translations impossible, so it’s not the same as being able to have a simple chat with friends. And chatting with friends doesn’t come easily; technology between the ships is not compatible, and any communication signals from the human’s own communication device are cancelled out by signals from the Xs’ ship.

The human becomes isolated from all other humans, on board a ship of 200 Xs.

Any difficulty communicating is eventually pushed aside and ignored but the Xs; if the human can’t communicate an idea, and the Xs don’t get it, what can they do? They do not need to understand the human or have the human understand them in order to do their jobs, so there is no point in trying. They understand that this project is important to the alliance, but do not understand how important communication is to humans.

The human has no help from others; several humans asking the same questions might get the idea that communicating certain ideas are important. But there is also no one who could understand them, no one to brainstorm ideas with:

“Now, how do we explain the concept of smell to a species from a planet where no organism has a nose?”

“Oh! My cousin was born without a sense of smell, and we sort of explained things like…”

Any problems communicating human ideas, or understanding X ideas, they face alone.

On that note, the human finds it difficult to to relate with any of the Xs. Xs can socialize fine between each other, but their standards for camaraderie is much different than that of humans. Humans are famous for their ability to empathize with any species, but it is not a two-way street, leaving the human caring about their new ship-mates with little care for themselves in return. They do not put more effort in helping the human understand, nor do they go out of their way to interact with the human outside of work situations. The human knows that it is not the fault of the Xs, that this is just the way Xs are, but they can’t help but begin to feel unappreciated, unwanted, and depressed.

Having long-since passed simple homesickness and culture shock, the human just wants desperately to talk to another human. It wouldn’t have to be anyone from the same country, or someone from the same field of work, or heck, even someone who spoke the same language. Even humans who can’t understand each other’s words can have get an idea from hand gestures, and historically, people who speak different languages that live in proximity to each other develop new dialects or learn to understand each others spoken language to communicate. Even with an age gap, they’ve lived during some of the same world events; they could find something to relate to each other. Another human would understand how strange X biology is compared to human biology, right? Another human could make jokes, laugh at the new, awesome, and weird things that they encounter. Another human could confirm that their feelings were real, right?

Humans are biologically engineered for socialization after all. Their species survived and evolved over hundreds of thousands of years because of their social nature. Xs understand this, and have heard that humans occasionally might have special needs like extraneous physical contact, but do not understand the implications. That this made humans biologically dependent on socialization for survival. That humans’ mental, emotional, and eventually even physical states can deteriorate without affection from friends and family.

And so the human gets ill.

Not quite used to human physicality in general or variation in physicality between individuals, and after hearing the legendary stories of humans surviving seemingly impossible situations, the Xs work their human crewmate hard. The human, already emotionally exhausted from isolation, easily gets physically exhausted. They contract an illness not unlike the common cold, though it couldn’t be given that their current location does not have any traces of the virus. With proper rest, and maybe more chances to chat with some friends back on the command ship, would help the human immensely. But the human, in their emotional and physical distress, can not communicate the idea that yes, humans can recover from illness like this without 5 different medicines. That talking to loved ones, or someone, anyone, would do more than just make them happy but give them the emotional will to make them physically well. There are no other humans around to explain human medical issues, or to provide a cool cloth for their fever, or to talk to while they’re sick in bed and unable to work, or…

The Xs change course and modify their signals in order to send a message to the human command ship and inform them that the human has fallen ill. Afraid of retaliation and wanting to ensure good faith, they request a strategy, asking what needs to be done in this situation. The human ship responds; the X on their ship has recently fallen ill as well. Xs do not have the hardy immune system that humans do, and while precautions were taken, it still caught a cold. The decision to return the crewmates to their home ships is made. The information that they managed to gather during their exchange this time will be used for a more successful future exchange and other interactions in the future.

The X suggests to their commanders more precautions regarding illnesses, and also advises any future volunteers to talk as much as possible to the other humans; they love interaction, learning, and teaching.

The human suggests that a special channel be created for easy communication, and makes only one demand; it doesn’t matter what the other species demands, don’t you dare let anyone go alone, ever again.

Au where Lance really can't stand his real last name. So he faked paper for the grasion with last name McLain?

I’m so sorry for the lateness of this! This prompt was given to me a long, long time ago and I just only got the um…inspiration to write this? I’m so sorry!

A little bit crossover to KHR since I made this into a MafiaAU of sorts. Note that most or all the things mentioned here (aside from the names they are not mine) are purely from my imagination and should not be taken with any ounce of seriousness.

Lance loved his family with all his heart, never question him about this or you will find yourself with a bullet stuck to any part of your body. What he didn’t appreciate was the part of the society he was born in. more specifically, the dark part of the society he was born in.

The Salazar Family was one of the best known Mafia family in the underworld. Who would not heard of them when they were one of the allies of the strongest Mafia, the Vongola? Being allied with the Vongola also meant that they were associates with the Chiavarone, Simon, Giglio Nero, and Millefiore just to name some of the big names. There was never a peaceful day for Lance for everyday was either spent on training or learning the ways of the world and how to survive in it.

The only lucky thing that Lance could consider was that he was not the eldest, thus exempting him from being the next heir for the family. It was unfair to be happy about this, especially that it was his reluctant older brother who got stuck in that position, but the part that wanted to be free weighed more in Lance’s heart. So at the age of 16th, Lance made a proposition and have the full support of the Vongola Decimo. The Salazar’s Don was a bit reluctant to agree in erasing Lance’s existence in the Mafia world (and that Lance was one of their best strategists) but just one look in his son’s eyes, one full of hope and passion in achieving his dreams, the Don gave his blessings also.

So Lance Salazar, third son of Don Salazar, became Lance McClain, an ordinary boy living with an ordinary family.

Forging documents and family background was just a piece of cake in the underworld and in no time, Lance was already attending the Garrison where he hoped his dreams to be a pilot as an ordinary guy would come true.

Of course there were times where his Mafia side got to the surface and times where he wished he could just contact the family and disposed someone for him. But because he ‘cut all his ties’ with the Mafia it also meant that he had no right to contact them anymore (though sometimes one or two men of his father will come to check up on him.). Why did he want to hire a hitman to eliminate someone? Well, there was this guy called Iverson who seemed to make it his life goal to make Lance’s life as miserable as possible. Always pointing out his flaws and implying that all the documents proving his intelligence were all fake/forge.

He could easily kill Iverson now that he thought about it. He was trained to do such things after all ever since he learned how to do complex Math and covering up the evidences was like slicing an apple with a sharp knife. But then the reason he left the world he was initially born in was to escape all the bloodshed. Only heaven knows how much of those bloods were caused by him even if most of them were all in the act of self-defense.

So he tried his best not to let those words of depreciation got stuck in his head (but most time he believed some of it.)

Then the next impulse to hire a hitman was when Lance started to get compared to a genius student named Keith.

Out of curiosity, Lance checked out this Keith guy. Yeah, he was an awesome pilot and combat but that was the only things that Keith was good at, at least that was how Lance saw it. He was never good at socializing and could not really hide his intention despite having a poker face. Keith would be a dead guy if left alone in the underworld.

Lance wanted to show how smart he was but Iverson already put a lot of bad words in his name resulting for no one to take him seriously. If he did something jaw dropping then majority would just accuse him of cheating because ‘hey, this is Lance! No way he did all of that in his own!’.  Being called as Keith’s replacement was not the most flattering words his ears could hear also.

Being caught in an intergalactic war and stuck in a castle with three and a half humans (Keith was half-Galra after all), two Alteans, space mice, and five sentient robotic lions was just like being trapped inside the Mafia world all over again.

Physical training, strategy making, forming alliances, Lance was tempted to call Voltron as space Mafia. He didn’t know if it already registered in the mind of others but they now have blood in their hands. It didn’t matter if it was an enemy they were killing. Life was life and they were not different to other soldiers of war.

Great, now Lance has human blood and alien blood staining his hands.

He thought about this every day.

Until one day, a sudden fact entered Lance’s mind that ended up with him laughing hysterically during breakfast. Everyone was looking at him like he had lost his mind (he probably had a long time ago).

“Lance, buddy, are you okay?” Hunk was about half way from standing up before Lance waved at him to indicate that he was fine.

“Don’t worry, Hunk. I just…pft! Ahahaha!”

Now Shiro was the one with worry creeping on his face. Was Lance having a breakdown? Was the war they were suddenly thrust in now taking its toll in their Blue Paladin’s mind?

“Lance, I need you to take deep breathes and talk to us.” It was hard but Shiro needed to ensure the health of his teammates even if he was being a hypocrite right now.

“Nah, I’m fine, Shiro. I just remembered something.”

“And that is…?” Lance didn’t know who asked that but he happily answered.

“Iverson is dead meat. Actually, he will be lucky if they will allow him to have a quick death. But knowing my family, I am sure they will torture him first.” Lance resumed eating his breakfast with a bright smile and as if he didn’t said something deeply disturbing.

“Wait, what?” Keith narrowed his eyes, “What do you mean by that.”

“Mullet boy, never cross my family.” That was the only answer Lance gave and it did not satisfy the curiosity of his teammates.

Sure, Lance was not a Salazar anymore and that his surname was now McClain. It didn’t mean though that he was already cast out by those he shared with the same flesh and blood.

After all, blood was thicker than water most of the time.

I don’t really know if I did the prompt some justice (>_<)

It irks me when people say that Dany is nothing without her dragons. GRRM described her as a warrior Queen some years ago. He compared her to Nymeria the warrior queen from Dorne. I can't find the source but I do remember reading it. I wonder how Martin feels when people try to deminish one of his favorite characters? He must take some offense or something.

Hey anon,

I’m sure GRRM is used to it by now, but I think he probably laughs to himself when people are so off about one of his characters.

Regarding Dany, her dragons are in a way a symbolic representation of her own power. People who say she’s nothing without her dragons don’t understand the character and quite frankly have a really shitty memory. Her dragons did not make her strong enough to survive and get the respect of Drogo, or to cross the Red Waste, or to come up with the entire plan to sack Astapor without anyone’s help, or her plan to make Yunkai put down their swords with minimum bloodshed. He dragons are not what inspires her people or keeps them loyal to her, it’s her and fight to free the slaves and to treat them like people.

It’s funny that you mentioned Nymeria because I was discussing with a friend the many similarities Dany shares with her. GRRM has compared Dany to Nymeria (who is Dany’s ancester from her great-great-grandfathers marriage to Mariah Martell) on a couple of occasions. Here is one

In particular, given that Nymeria was a warrior-queen, is there a certain amazon tradition?

“The Rhoynar did impact Dorne in a number of ways, some of which will be revealed in later books. Women definitely have more rights in Dorne, but I would not call it an “Amazon” tradition, necessarily. Nymeria had more in common with someone like Daenerys or Joan d'Arc than with Brienne or Xena the Warrior Princess.”

I found this fantastic comparison between Dany and Nymeria, I’ll quote my favorite parts but you can find the discussion here: (The bolded are quotes from the books.)

The refugee, the nomad, the woman wearing the literal skirt and metaphorical pants

“In the songs, Nymeria is said to have been a witch and a warrior; neither of these claims is true. Though she did not bear arms in battle, she led her soldiers on many battlefields, commanding them with cunning and skill.”

Dany is doing the exact same thing. She’s a warlord that’s not a warrior. And yes, you can be a warlord with absolutely no skill at arms, else Dany wouldn’t be called Aegon the Conqueror with teats.

Now let’s skim over Nymeria’s general history as it applies to Dany so far.

“Only Princess Nymeria of Ny Sar spoke against him. “This is a war we cannot hope to win,” she warned, but the other princes shouted her down and pledged their swords to Garin.”

In AGOT, Viserys is dreaming his fool dreams about re-taking Westeros with Dothraki. Dany knows better. She’s also somewhat skeptical of the Dothraki taking Westeros from the start, mostly thanks to Jorah Mormont educating her.

“The same fate awaited her own city, she saw.”

Nymeria runs for it after Valyria massacres the Rhoyanar men. After Drogo dies, Dany hatches her invaluable dragons. She’s also left with few Dothraki, and she has to flee from various Khals (on top of her constant running from Robert).

“Nymeria’s voyage was long and terrible.”

The difficulty of the Red Waste corresponds to this. Then, Nymeria had her Odyssey: Rhoyne -> Basilisk Isles -> jungles of Sothoryos -> Isle of Naath -> Summer Isles (Isle of Women). She couldn’t stay in any of these places, because~

“(…) arrived at Yeen to find that every man, woman, and child in that haunted, ruined city had vanished overnight.”

Haunted (to the eye) ruins, like the House of the Undying?

“The sullen wet heat oppressed their spirits, and swarms of stinging flies spread one disease after another (…)”

and

“On Naath, the Isle of Butterflies, the peaceful people gave them welcome, but the god that protects that strange land began to strike down the newcomers by the score with a nameless mortal illness”

Illness, like the Bloody Flux outbreak? Also, Missandei - one of Dany’s main helpers - is a friendly girl from Naath Dany finds somewhere at the halfway point of her journey.

“Basilisk Isles (…) only to fall afoul of the corsair kings (…) carrying off hundreds into slavery.”

and

“new towns on Basilisk Point were raided by slavers,”

Well, what do you know, Dany’s slave liberation campaign isn’t working out so well. In fact, seemingly half of the slaving Essos is sending armies against her in ADWD - Yunkai, Qarth, New Ghis, Tolos, Elyria, Volantis, the Harpies within Meereen itself.

“In the Summer Isles (…) its thin stony soil yielded little food, and many starved.”

As Dany approached Meereen, the slavers put the land around it to torch to starve her out. She still took the city, but many of her people are nonetheless starving.

“The battered, tattered remainder of the ten thousand ships sailed west with Princess Nymeria. This time she made for Westeros.”

Dany at the end of ADWD:

“Meereen was not her home, and never would be. It was a city of strange men with strange gods and stranger hair, of slavers wrapped in fringed tokars, where grace was earned through whoring, butchery was art, and dog was a delicacy. Meereen would always be the Harpy’s city, and Daenerys could not be a harpy.

Never, said the grass, in the gruff tones of Jorah Mormont. You were warned, Your Grace. Let this city be, I said. Your war is in Westeros, I told you.”

The once and future queen

Back to Nymeria and why I think Dany will do well in Westeros~

“Dry, desolate, and thinly peopled, Dorne at this time was a poor land where a score of quarrelsome lords and petty kings warred endlessly over every river, stream, well, and scrap of fertile land.”

Wet, desolate and overflowing with corpses, at the end of ADWD Westeros is a fucked-up continent where a score of quarrelsome lords and petty kings war endlessly over everything. Euron, Tommen, Aegon, Stannis, KINGINDANORF? are just the Kings we have. (Does the Night King count?)

“Most of these Dornish lords viewed the Rhoynar as unwelcome interlopers, invaders with queer foreign ways and strange gods, who should be driven back into the sea whence they’d come.”

Yeah, Dany will have barbarians, slaves (you think Westerosi can notice they have no collars?), the infamous Imp, dragons, a trail of burning enemies behind her. She won’t get warm reception from most.

And they lived happily ever after

Well, probably not. I don’t see how GRRM will keep Dany on Nymeria’s track without breaking his tone.

“Though she married twice more (first to the aged Lord Uller of Hellholt, and later to the dashing Ser Davos Dayne of Starfall, the Sword of the Morning), Nymeria herself remained the unquestioned ruler of Dorne for almost twenty-seven years, her husbands serving only as counselors and consorts.”

I suppose that in a certain way, Mors can also work as Drogo, old Lord Uller as lame King Hizdahr, and the Sword of the Morning as… Jon NOT DARKSTAR, because I refuse to contemplate the possibility of Darkstar (she already did Bad Boy Daario). The husbands as consorts works for Hizadhr, and whomever her prophesized 3rd husband is, Dany will be leading in her own right - Drogon, Dracarys! helps there.

“She survived a dozen attempts upon her life, put down two rebellions, and threw back two invasions by the Storm King Durran the Third and one by King Greydon of the Reach.”

Dany already survived at least 4-5 attempts on her life - AGOT wineseller, ACOK manticore and arguably Undying, ASOS Titan’s Bastard, ADWD Poizdar do Loqust. I also don’t see Stannis bending to Dany, same for Tyrells who’ll stay with Tommen Lannister. Other possibilities for revolting kingdoms are Dorne (the irony!) and Iron Islands.

That was pretty awesome, there are more quote at the link if you want to read all the parallels between these awesome women.

I will add one thing regarding Nymeria’s 3 husbands vs. Dany’s 3 husbands.

Nymeria’s first husband (Mors Martell) came from a people who are famed for their horses (Dorne), Dany’s first husband came from a people famed for their horses (Dothraki).

Nymeria’s second husband came from Hellholt (Lord Uller), which is symbolized by a sort of fiery yin-yang thing, it’s half this and half that, it’s divided basically. Dany’s second husband was symbolized by the Harpy, half woman, and half bird.

Finally, Nymeria’s third and final husband was Ser Davos Dayne the Sword of the Morning, I do wonder if the Sword of the Morning will play a role in the books as it has been mentioned a lot. And whether Jon will use it or not. Jon does have a connection to an actual Sword of the Morning in Author Dayne. And of course, there is the whole War for Dawn thing going one.

Sorry, I hijacked your asked but yeah, Dany doesn’t need to wield a sword to be kickass, just look at her very kickass ancestor Nymeris.

It was a summer Saturday night in Queens. The mid-July air was warm and humid. Large skyscrapers and constant traffic only helped to increase the stickiness in the air. There was a minor heatwave going through the area. During the night however, without the sun’s relentless beams of light shining down on the asphalt roads, the temperature dropped just enough to make the weather bearable. Just barely though.

This particular night, you were mindlessly spinning around in your desk chair. Scattered all along the surface of your desk were some random notes for an essay that was due by the upcoming Friday. There wasn’t much of a rush to get the thing finished, but you liked to get things done in advanced anyway. Nonetheless, you still found yourself avoiding the essay like it was the plague. You weren’t normally like this. You normally could pump out at least a mediocre paper in maybe a day, but tonight your mind was not having it.

Something was keeping you restless and alert. You weren’t entirely positive what though. Nothing out of the ordinary happened today. You woke up, you ate some food, and you watched some Netflix; everything seemed normal. You racked your brain to try and think of anything that could have possibly caused this random tension, but nothing came up. Sighing, you stopped spinning around in your chair (you were starting to get dizzy) and just stared at your bedroom ceiling. Eventually, you started to calm down.

It was dark in your room. The only light source was your tiny desk lamp that didn’t really illuminate much. You had your window open to try and feign the heat that was stuck in your apartment. Or rather your parent’s apartment, but they were away on some long business trip and left you to your own devices for the week. Stupid mistake, really. The open window didn’t help at all though. All it did was allow the humid outside air to mix with the stiff apartment air. The result was a mixture of stale and oppressive. The only reason you didn’t close the window was because of how purely lazy you were. You were here and the window as there. No matter the distance, it was always too far. So, needless to say, you were not very comfortable.

You glanced back at your notes and made a sour face. At this rate, you were more likely to close the damn window than finish the essay. You finally conceded and sat up a bit to switch off the light. Your room went from dimly lit to almost completely dark. The only source of light now was the faint glow of the city’s shops, cars and street vendors. You closed your eyes and sat in the dark for a while. There was something peaceful about just sitting there and listening to the sounds of the car horns and the clamor of the people. It was all so familiar and calming. You had grown up your entire life in this city. There was no place you’d rather live than here. You were so lost in these thoughts that you failed to hear the subtle movement of someone entering through your open window.

You were just about to drift off to sleep when you heard a loud thump and a muffled groan from behind you. You jumped instantly out of your chair, ran to turn the overhead light on, and quickly grabbed the nearest thing to you to use as a weapon. That item just so happened to be your Millennium Falcon Bluetooth speaker that you got for Christmas one year. You knew it was geeky, but you didn’t really care what others thought about it. You found it to be awesome, and so did your best friend Peter Parker. Not that his opinion mattered any more than everyone else’s. Obviously.

You held the speaker up, ready to swing at whomever had come into your room, and looked down to see a body laying face down on your hardwood floors. When you saw who it was you froze in your spot and your jaw dropped.

SasuSaku best explained

“ People constantly say Sasuke never changed or treated her well and act like she just took his abuse constantly and never stood up for herself. She was legitimately preparing to kill him at one point. And right here when finally, after everything they’ve been through, all the tears, everything she’s done and grown through because of her love for him, he apologizes to her. And she breaks down because she knows it’s sincere. But she tells him “you should be, you damn idiot”. If you think Part 1 Sakura or even first arc of Shippuden Sakura would’ve EVER said that to him you’re wrong. That’s growth. She sees him as a person and an equal not an unattainable prince she dreams about and obsesses over. Sasuke grew as well! He learned the truth about his family, he flip flopped on his life’s philosophy over and over again, and he finally had his huge confrontation with Naruto they always wanted. In the end, he married her. Which to me means he sees her as a person and an equal now as well. Whereas when they were kids he found her constant idolizing and affection towards him annoying and had to be cruel to her because she’d interpret anything else as an invitation to join him on his path of self-destruction. It’s actually a really well-developed and mutually respectful relationship if you’re mature enough to notice how they both had to change perspectives and reevaluate the other’s place in their lives in order to make it work.“

This.

This is describes their relationship completely, I don’t think anyone could have put it any better than this.

By the way, before I start admiring just how amazing this is, this is a YouTube comment I saw, I didn’t even know that someone could manage to describe their relationship in one easy paragraph, well I have, but at least not with a hate comment following it.

Before people even begin to try to say, “Well Sarada isn’t Sakura’s daughter,” please look at this:

This is at the very end of Naruto Gaiden, where Karin confirms that Sarada is not Karin’s daughter, she’s Sakura’s daughter. Even Kishimoto explained this. Even if it doesn’t end up being brought up in the animated version of Naruto Gaiden, it’s still cannon that Sarada Uchiha is Sakura’s daughter. Kishimoto even pointed out that he had purposefully tried to give them similar facial features and he tried to give them similar personalities with only a little bit of Sauke’s mixed in (even though she seems to be a perfect mix of both her parents).

Now that we’ve got that confirmed, let’s talk about this.

Firstly, why are people acting as if Sasuke left for no reason whatsover?? This is why he left:

Sasuke isn’t leaving the village because he just decided:

“Well, lol I don’t want to raise my child or have anything to do with my wife so I gtg”

This guy left because he actually ended up feeling immense guilt for what he did. He feels guilty because all Naruto, Sakura, and even Kakashi showed him was love and he returned the favor with pure hatred. Yet, none of them ever stopped believing that they could set him on the right path. Even when everyone else did. All of them still hanged in there until the very end. Just because Sasuke didn’t yell or get angry like Naruto, or cry or punch something like Sakura, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have feelings.

He just tries to keep a calm exterior, but you can’t convince me that their hasn’t been any character growth their since Shonen Jump or the beginning of Shippuden. Because there was lots of it with Sasuke. Just because it wasn’t as visible as it was with all the other characters in the series doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen.

Now, for those who dislike SasuSaku, I don’t blame you the ship was written sort of vaguely, we never really got to learn exactly how Sasuke felt. But Sasuke himself is a very vague person, and he’s come a long way with that. Even though he’s still fairly vague about how he feels.. But Sasuke and Sakura have a different type of love, it’s not going to be as straightforward as NaruHina, InoSai or ShikaTema. Honestly even BoruSara is more straightforward than this one and it isn’t even cannon. But they still love each other, those shallow, niave people in the fandom who probably barely even know what love is, or have never experienced it (in a romantic way) probably may not understand, but their are some of us who do.

Also, even if you dislike the ship, why constantly complain about it? Let people ship what they want to ship. I don’t necessarily ship ShikaTema (despite the fact that I love them both and Shikadai) but I don’t go on full-on rants about how I hate it. What’s done is done, Kishimoto wrote the series the way he wanted to, and that’s the most professional thing he could’ve done. What you can rant about is if you don’t like something in Boruto. You probably will not have too much effect (especially being a Western fan), but Kishimoto isn’t done writing Boruto, if there is something you want to prevent then it’s not too late to prevent it.

We probably can never bring Neji or Jiriya back, we can’t change Sakura’s character, we can’t take back what Sasuke did, we can’t watch Naruto’s parents be the most awesome grandparents in history, we can’t see Tsunade finally get together with Jiriya. Even though Kishimoto is more than likely going to write this how he wants, stop dwelling on Shonen Jump and Shippuden, what we should do is let Kishimoto know what we liked and disliked in episodes, if we like characters or not, if we think this serious has been good so far. Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t mystically travel back in time and rewrite the whole entire series, (we’ve seen what’s come of that, *cough* TTG/PGG *cough*) if you’re in the fandom again, you’re in, if you’re out, you’re out, but you can’t keep holding everything back because you’re mad at how Naruto and Hinata got married or you don’t like that Tsunade became Hokage. It’s over, it’s done.

Not only that, people keep using the ship as an excuse to bash Sakura’s character since she’s no longer “useless” like she was in the first place (even though, personally, I never thought of her as useless) so they’re mad at her for still loving Sasuke. They’re also mad because she thought of Naruto as a brother instead of a guy she wanted to date.

I know this sounds cliche, but you don’t have control over who you fall in love with. I’m sure after Sasuke did what he did Sakura wanted to love Naruto, or anyone else besides Sasuke at least, but she was always focused on trying to lead him in the right direction, just as Naruto was. Then she had to prepare herself to kill the guy she has loved all almost all her life at one point, and although he did so many things wrong she still can’t do it, because it’s hard to bring yourself to kill someone that you love:

And as the comment stated, Sasuke grew as a person. He’s no longer the boy yearning for revenge, he’s now determined to protect every single thing he loves. Just like Naruto, Sasuke doesn’t really have a chance to spend time with his family because he wants to protect anyone at any cost. Now, I’m not saying Sasuke deserves father of the year award for neglecting his family although it is accidental, but Naruto doesn’t either.

Even after all this time:

They they’re still determined to prevent anyone to feel the pain and loneliness they felt all their childhoods, that’s why they’re always protecting the village. To stop it before it comes, and to try to let those people know that they still have at least the smallest bit of comfort.

And as the comment states, as the series progresses Sakura learns that Sasuke isn’t her perfect, enchanting, prince charming. That he has flaws, just like anyone else. Back is Part I she’d always speak highly of him, she’d always compare him to Naruto in the most negative way and she only seemed to ever care about Sasuke and nothing more. But as Part I progressed she began seeing him as an equal. That’s why she was determined to become as strong as Naruto and Sasuke, so that she could establish that not only to them and everyone else, but within herself.

If it weren’t for Sakura, who kept loving him throughout everything, he probably wouldn’t have cared about her feelings, but Sakura’s feelings actually moved him. He tried to show her that he didn’t care so she’d stopped loving him, because he didn’t know why or how she could love someone like him. That’s why he wanted to make her think he was legitimately trying to kill her, he wanted convince her and himself that he didn’t care. But he actually did care.

I get that it isn’t easy to understand, but these two love each other, it isn’t just one-sided, and we’ll probably see more evidence as the Next Gen series continues:

(If you have any argument or any sort of disagreement, and you don’t think you can comment without talking rudely I won’t reply or anything, I’ll just delete your comment, reblog or whatever, no matter how long it is, that is only if you don’t come in a respectful manner, if you do then I’ll probably respond or just let you comment it or something)

Yesterday I saw an anti ironpanther post on my dash and surprise, surprise, spite is a very good motivator for me to start writing again. So have some courting, and arc reactor issues and getting together, since that is what @ir0nshield asked for. Watch out for the cut since this is almost 3k words long.

Dealing with T’Challa after the whole mess with the Accords was easier than Tony would have thought.

Sure, T’Challa, and T’Chaka before him, had been for the Accords in the first place, but T’Challa was also housing the rogue Avengers and Tony wasn’t sure what to expect from him.

But T’Challa was nothing if not polite, and Tony tried to be the same in return. After all, T’Challa was a big force behind the Accords and Tony could need him in his corner if Ross suddenly decided that Tony belonged into the raft as well.

Tony was rubbing at the skin around the arc reactor, the cold always made it hurt, when T’Challa entered the conference room.

“Mr. Stark,” he greeted Tony and Tony almost flinched.

“Let’s stick to Tony, Mr. Stark was my father, King T’Challa,” he said and T’Challa thoughtfully tilted his head.

“Only if you can forget the king,” he gave back and Tony huffed.

“Nothing easier as that, Mufasa.” Tony wasn’t sure if the Lion King was a thing over in Wakanda, but going by the tilt to T’Challa’s mouth it definitely was.

“I think I am more Simba than Mufasa, wouldn’t you agree,” T’Challa said and proved Tony right.

“If you say so, Simba,” Tony replied with a smile and then stilled when T’Challa’s gaze fell onto his chest.

“Is it still hurting from the injury?” he asked and Tony forced himself to lower his hand.

He never liked it when the attention was on the arc reactor.

“Maybe. It just hurts sometimes,” he gave back, not willing to tell T’Challa that it was the injury and the cold and the reactor in general. He didn’t need to know that.

T’Challa obviously noticed Tony’s hesitation in talking about the reactor and thankfully dropped the matter.

They were talking about Rhodey and his recovery when the other members of the Accords came in and from then on it was only business with them.

I hummed to myself as I sweeped the floor clear of the dust. I moved all of the dirt to a small pile which I would pick up later.

No matter how your heart is grieving…If you keep on believing…The dream that you wish will come true…” I sang to myself. My mother taught me this song before she passed. She told me that whenever times were tough or if I was feeling down, that I should sing this song.

I was finishing up when suddenly, Stepmother’s cat, Lucifer, jumped out of nowhere and pounced on the pile of dust. He ran around a few times, scattering what I’d just cleaned. The cat even turned to look at me with what, I swear, looked like a smug look in his eye.

anonymous asked:

hi!! i know you said you were answering witchy asks so heres what ive got. im a really new witch, ive been interested in it for a few months now and have veeery slowly started trying to figure out what types of magic i can do / enjoy. i know research is the way to become more aware of magic and how to do it, but im never sure what good sources are or what are good articles to read for baby witches. if you have any, id be really thankful! thanks for considering even if you say no <3

Okay, so, instead of recommending you articles and stuff, I’m gonna talk a bit about critical thinking in magic, and using our discernment, because I don’t think it gets talked about a lot.

So the thing is, first off, there are a lot of sources out there, as we know. Some are awesome, some are hit and miss, and some are just…bad. But how can we tell them apart, and how can I know as a beginner what to avoid?

Well, the first thing you want to do is find your source of information. Pick an article. Read it all the way through. Now, how do you feel about what you read? Did it make sense, or were you left confused on a lot of points? Did it *seem* reasonable? Was there anything that didn’t sit right, or made you feel uncomfortable or unsure of yourself?

As magic users, we are taught our instincts are very important, and generally good to follow in regards to magic; I’d say the same can be said for researching magic as well. Of course, it’s not to be totally relied on every time, but it can definitely give you an idea of things you may want to stay away from if it doesn’t sit right with you. Not only is the information accuracy important, but whether you are comfortable utilizing it too! our boundaries in magic are just as important.

Paying attention to any sort of comments or reviews on sources is great too. There are some problematic sources out there, and we do talk about that sort of thing on Tumblr. There can still be useful things found in bad resources, however; you just need to know the problem areas to avoid so you can sift through it to find anything that may be useful to you.

Problem areas:

  • using the terms witchcraft / Wicca / pagan interchangeably
  • religious exclusion (saying one religion is better than another)
  • elitism (“real witches only do *this*” ; “you are only a real witch if you are *this*” ; etc.)
  • cultural appropriation
    • chakras
    • smudging
    • spirit animals
    • animal totems
    • Voodoo / voudou
  • racism
  • anti-LGBT
  • use of slurs
    • g*psy is a big one
  • claiming Wicca as an ancient religion / oldest religion
  • outdated information (can be a problem to some)

This is just what I can think of right now, and is by no means a complete list. If you find something that you wonder if that’s really okay, or gives you a bad gut feeling, stay away from it, or try to look into it a bit more and see what you can find.

[List of Closed Cultures]

Some find that a lack of sources can be a problem, and that is definitely the case with published authors. Online, however, you are more than likely going to find personal experiences, and we can’t really source our own experiences and methods besides to ourselves. Not everyone references the posts they used for herb correspondences, or what method they used for their sigils. Generally you will want to know sources for more about the information of the practice (its history and usage over time, magic users in the past, etc.), because that area is really fuzzy and there’s lots of misinformation on that.

In regards to telling information accuracy - this can be a bit harder nowadays, since we know that magic is unique to each that practices it, and so you may even sometimes see conflicting information on the same topics! Definitely very confusing from the start. I think it is important to keep in mind different views and methods are possible as you research. However, I still recommend that you cross reference.

If you are reading through something, and you wish to check its accuracy, Google it. For example, if someone mentions the properties of rue, and you want to see if that’s really how it’s used commonly, search it up. (This isn’t just applicable to Google, but any other reference materials you may have, Google is just the easiest for accessibility.) Check a few other resources, see what they have to say on the topic. Do they line up for the most part? Where are the differences? Do you have any personal feelings on the topic yet?

Sometimes just experience is enough to tell whether something is legit or bogus. Say you find a spell, and it looks kinda meh, but you don’t really know for sure if it’s any good for you - give it a test run. Learning and discovering for yourself can be just as important and have as big an impact on your craft as anything else. This may have a higher level of risk to it than other methods of research, but sometimes we gotta…

I think that’s really what witchcraft is all about - because all the research in the world isn’t really helpful if you don’t do anything about it. Your experiences may vary based on what you read, and that’s fine, but you’ll never know how it may really work for you unless you try it out for yourself. And I mean, of course you should be doing it in a safe way, but hopefully you know the importance of performing your actions safely in magic and the benefits of protective methods.

Honestly, discernment is something that is experienced and learned that way - trial and error do really help a lot for each of us to find out if this particular thing is any good for us - and just because it may be legit for one person, doesn’t mean it is for you. That is why it’s great to do the research, but you also need to back it up with the physical actions of trying it out too.

Now, this is by not means extensive or complete, it’s just what I can think of at this time.

I’m gonna give you some resources as well, just to be sure.

All of the posts I would recommend would be from Tumblr, since that is where my main arch of experience comes from. However, you can definitely Google your own articles and take a look-see through them, see what sounds feasible to you, if anything makes you feel weird, and cross reference it to a couple other references.

If you can do books, here are some that other have recommended.

I hope this helps you! If I can think of anything else to add in the future, I may do that, but off the top of my head, this is what I’ve got. I have a huge post on how to do witchy research in my drafts, but it is still gonna stay there for a bit, particularly because I have no time and energy for it right now, lol. But I hope this gives you some ideas! :D

“Hey Buckster,” You greet Bucky Barnes as you enter the kitchen of the Avenger’s tower one morning.

“Hello,” He says, his signature frown on his face at your nick name for him as he looks up from the paper he was reading.

“It supposed to be warmer today, I’m going for a walk around the park, would you like to come with me?” Going to grab your favorite mug for your coffee, you found that it was on the highest shelf. Cursing whoever emptied the dishwasher last, you attempted to stand on your tip toes to reach it, but couldn’t. “Buckster, will you do me a favor and grab my mug for me?” He nodded, moving over to you and reaching the cub with ease. “Thank you. So, what do you say about the walk.”

“No thank you,” He said simply before returning to his breakfast and paper.

Every morning you planned something to do, walk, attending to your flower garden on the top level of the tower, or Sundays and Wednesdays it was the farmer’s market, sometimes it was to read outside, other times a run, anything that you could invite Bucky along to. You had been doing it since about a week after he arrived, which was about three months ago, now. Every morning you ate breakfast at the same time as him, and every morning you’d ask if he wanted to do something with you, and every morning he would say ‘no, thank you.’ Then, every morning you would sit down and talk to him, well, at him, while you both ate or drank coffee.

“I know Clint calls me hot-head for the pun, but it just doesn’t make sense, I am a relatively calm person, I think.” You rant to a non-responsive Bucky about the nickname that Clint gave you. Being an Enhanced with the ability to summon and control fire it came the opportunity for a multitude of puns, all of which the team would take advantage of. You enjoyed the joking for the most part but sometimes it made you a bit upset because you were self-conscious about your enhancement, feeling that fire was far too destructive of an element for yourself. “Anyways, have a good day Buckster.” Hoping off the stool at the breakfast bar, you rinsed out your mug and put it in the drying rack just as Sam and Steve walked in from their morning run.

“Goodness, it’s hot.” Sam commented, both of them with sweat stains down their shirts.

“Don’t worry, I’m leaving.” You tease, waving as you walk out the door. You swore you heard a stifled chuckle from Bucky.

“Good morning, Bucko,” You grin at Bucky the next day, walking into the kitchen and making your way to the cabinets as usual, “How was your yesterday?”

“Fine.” He responded shortly, glancing up from the paper.

“Damn it, who the hell keeps putting my mug on the tallest shelf?” You mutter as you attempt to grab your mug again on your very tip toes. Before you could turn around to grab a chair, you felt the presence of someone right behind you and saw a metal arm reach out in front of you and grab the mug for you. “Thank you,” You grinned up at him as you took it from his hand once he held it out for you. “I’m going to the farmer’s market today, I was thinking about getting some fresh flowers to brighten up the place in here and possibly some veggies, wanna come with?” With a fluttering in your stomach at how close he was standing to you, you took another shot in the dark, prepared for disappointment.

             “Sure,” Bucky nodded once.

A look of surprise washed over your face for a moment but it was quickly replaced with a grin so bright it rivaled the sun. “Awesome! We can go after breakfast?” You ask, practically jumping with excitement. He nods, a corner of his lip quirking up in what you believe to be a smile.

After you practically shot gun your cup of coffee you quickly change out of your pajamas and grab your bag, you meet Bucky back in the kitchen. You spend most of the walk to the park where the farmer’s market was in comfortable silence. “What is your favorite type of flower?” You ask as you near the tents and spot the flower stand.

“I don’t know,” Was all the answer you got, but you smiled anyways, mentally picking out the type of flower you were going to get for him.

You hummed to yourself as you stood in front of the buckets of beautiful plants, finger held to your lip in thought as you decided which types would be best where in the tower. “Do you like these for the kitchen?” You ask, pointing to a particular type and looking to Bucky and only receiving a shrug in response, “Yeah, you’re right, they won’t work, far too flippant.” Looking around for a more appropriate bouquet you miss the smile that graces his lips at your comment. After choosing what you felt to be a sufficient number of flowers you gathered them up in your arms and paid the vendor.

It wasn’t hard to notice the stares that you were getting, of course you would be recognized, you were part of the Avengers. But every time Bucky got noticeably uncomfortable with people’s heads turning to look at you, you redirected the conversation to take his mind off of it.

“Would you like some help carrying those?” He asked after noticing you struggling to balance all of the floral arrangements as you picked out vegetables.

“Oh heavens, yes please.” You sigh in relief and smile as you hand over about half of them. When your hands brush each other you see his eyes flick to look at you but you just keep your attention on the flowers, not wanting to make him think that it wasn’t okay. You realize afterward that this is the first time you’ve ever touched him.

“Why do you like flower so much? You always talk about them when you ask me to come with you here, and your garden.” Bucky speaks up as you begin walking back to the tower.

“Well, I suppose it has to do with what I feel fire is, which is annihilation and destruction, so I like something that’s the opposite of that. I like to surround myself with life and growth because maybe it’ll cancel out in the long run.” You try to sound nonchalant as you admit something you had never said aloud, let alone to anyone else. Bucky stays silent, but you know that in his silence there is understanding.

“I picked these out for you.” You say quickly after you return to the tower and set all the purchases down and holding out a grouping of daffodils. “Daffodils symbolize rebirth and new beginnings, just as we, The Avengers, are for you.” You left out the other specific things those flowers also meant.

“Thank you, Y/N.” He tried his best to smile at you as he watched you carefully arranges the flowers in vases and put them in various places around the tower. He noticed he was the only person who got his own personal bouquet.

“FRIDAY?” Asks as he lays flat on his back in his bed, unable to fall asleep.

“Yes, Mr. Barnes?” The AI answers back.

“Look up Daffodil flower meaning,” He stated, before quickly adding a “please” at the end. While he did have to use technology a bit in his years working for Hydra, he was still confused as to how to navigate the world-wide web, so he mostly turned to FRIDAY to answer his questions.

“Daffodils symbolize chivalry, rebirth, and since they are the first flower to boom in spring, they are considered symbolize the end of winter.” FRIDAY answers back smoothly. Bucky smiles at this, it was perfect. He knew that Y/N knew enough about flowers to know the full meaning. His heart swelled with happiness and affection, she specifically chose ones that not only meant rebirth, as she had defined them, but ones that specifically marked the end of winter, and gave them to him. But he was drawn from these thoughts when the AI’s Irish lilt filled the silence of his room once again, “To a lesser degree they are known as the flower of unrequited love.” Bucky’s heart beat sped up at this and his head swam. Had Y/N meant it that way? If he were to think she just didn’t know, he would be contradicting his earlier thought of that she knew flowers and their meanings well. “Is there anything else I can do for you, Mr. Barnes?”

“No, thank you.” He croaks out. He lay there for the rest of the night, thoughts running too fast to let him find peaceful sleep.

Bucky didn’t realize he had fallen asleep until he woke up. Late, much to his dissatisfaction. It was only about half an hour later than when he normally woke up. Walking quickly down the hall he cursed to himself, he liked to be in the kitchen before you so he could see you scuffle in, wish him good morning in your far-too-chipper-for-how-early-it-was voice, and invite him to whatever it was you were doing that day, and more recently, help you grab your mug from the top shelf of the cabinets.

As he neared the kitchen he heard the sound of glass shattering followed immediately by a loud thud and an ‘oof’. Running into the room, he finds you on the floor, seemingly haven fallen off the counter, mug broken.

“Hey there, Buck-aroni, mind giving a girl a hand?” You groan, trying to push yourself up.

Bucky moves to your side to help you, “You’re bleeding,” He comments when he sees that the shattered mug had left ceramic bits sticking out of the side of your arm and leg as he pulls you to your feet. So preoccupied with worry, he fails to see the blush spreading across your cheeks at the close contact.

“Oh great,” You mutter, hissing in pain as you attempt to pull a particularly large shard from your thigh.

“I can help, I’ll go get a first aid kit.” When Bucky returned, first aid box in hand, you were sitting on a stool and attempting to pull more pieces. “Stop that.” He ordered softly, moving your hand away so he could begin pulling them out more carefully with the tweezers.

“That was my favorite mug.” You huff between curses as he began carefully working on cleaning you up, “I was trying to get it from the top shelf so I climbed on the counter, but it was wet and I slipped.”

“Why didn’t you grab a chair or wait for me to get it for you?” He glances up at you, guilt settling in his stomach.

“I was too lazy to get a chair and I didn’t want to hassle you. Plus you might have been sleeping in.” You shrug.

“Good morning Inferno, Frosty- oh god what happened here?” Tony asks as he enters the kitchen to fill his mug. You doubt he slept, based on the caffeine-wired look and dark circles under his eyes.

“I fell,” You say with a roll of your eyes. You hated your title, and everyone knew that. Being an enhanced, you came from Hydra, a different branch than Bucky, so you hadn’t crossed paths at all. You joined the Avengers a few months before he did, and right away you had expressed your dislike of your name.

“Oh right, sorry about that. Say, why don’t you like Inferno again?” Tony asked, leaning against the counter.

“An Inferno is defined as huge, out of control, fire, or simply, as Hell, because I was designed to reign hell down upon Hydra’s enemies. I don’t want to be Hell.” You replied simply, though there was an edge to your tone.

Bucky glanced up at you, this being the first time you had ever explained your hatred of your title, and your reasoning resonated deep with him.

“Well, how about we come up with a new one for you.” Tony shrugged, sipping his coffee.

“What are we coming up with a new one of?” Steve asked as he entered the kitchen after his morning run with Sam. He raised a questioning eyebrow at Bucky crouched in front of you, gauze in hand.

“I couldnt reach my mug so I stood on the counter to get it and slipped getting off and broke it, thus why I have mug shards in my arm and leg.” You answer his unspoken question, thinking it was directed at why you were hurt rather than the true meaning of as to why Bucky was the one helping you. Little did you know, when Steve and Bucky were alone, you were pretty much all Bucky could talk about. Yesterday, Steve swore the only things that came out of his best friend’s mouth were about your trip to the farmer’s market and how happy he was you gave him flowers. “But Tony suggested we come up with a new like code name for me, since I despise Inferno so much.”

“That’s a great idea! How about Blaze? That sounds cool?” Steve offered, grabbing food from the fridge.

You shook your head, wincing slightly as Bucky cleaned a larger cut. “That makes me sound like I’m a stoner or something.”

“Stoner?” Steve frowns in confusion and you just shake your head to say ‘you don’t wanna know.’

“Combustion?” Tony suggests thoughtfully, “Flaming flammable person? Magma?”

“What about Phoenix?” Bucky asks suddenly, looking up as he wraps the final cut with a Band-Aid. “This is your new life, rising from the ashes of what Hydra made you,”

“I love it.” You grin, nodding, “That’s perfect.”

Bucky smiles slightly, and Steve nods in approval of it as well, all while Tony walks away muttering about three people in the Avengers now with bird-related names.

“I was going to go work in the garden this morning but seeing as it hurts to move and I have a mission coming up and need to heal, I think I’m going to watch a movie. Want to join me, Buck-aroni?” You ask as you push yourself off the bench gingerly.

“Yeah,” He nods once, and you smile in response before leaving to go pick out a movie in the other room.

             “Buck-aroni?” Steve asks, smirking.

“Steve.” Bucky warns, shooting his friend a good-natured glare.

“I think it’s cute, the nicknames,” His best friend shrugs in response, “I’m glad to see you’re finally taking her up on her offers to spend time with you.”

             “What do you mean?”

“Every morning without fail she asks you to do something, no matter how many times you turn it down, you got to like someone to do that. We’ve all seen it, so don’t even deny it, so she obviously wants to spend time with you, and I’m glad you started doing it.” Steve shrugs, taking a bite of the toast he made.

Before Bucky could response his attention is pulled away by you calling his name to join you in the movie room.

“Good Morning, Buckaroo,” You wave at him before going to the cupboard to steal someone else’s mug for the day until you went to the store to get a new one.

This morning Bucky had made sure to be there before you, a small box with a ribbon in hand.

“I have something for you,” He avoided making eye contact and he seemed nervous, which made you frown. As he held out the box, you took it carefully.

“Bucky, you didn’t have to get me anything.” You say as you carefully untie the ribbon and open the box. Inside was a new mug, covered in vintage style flowers. “Oh, this is wonderful, thank you!” Setting the cup down you move across the table to pull him into a tight hug. Bucky stiffens at first but then wraps his arms around your waist.

“Am I interrupting something?” Sam says teasingly as he enters the room, Steve not far behind him.

“Oh no, Bucky just got me a new mug because I broke mine yesterday, isn’t is pretty?” You pull away from Bucky and hold up the mug. While you admiring the details of the flowers you missed the knowing smirks that Steve and Sam shot Bucky, and the blush that rose to his cheeks in response.

“Oh, Buckaroo, I’m working in the garden today and could use some help, want to join me?” You ask over your shoulder, pouring yourself a coffee.

             “Of course.”

You quickly pulled out your phone to snap a picture of the moment. You and Bucky had just finished weeding and potting new plants in your garden and were gearing up to head back inside, but the picture perfect moment was too much to pass up. His hair was pulled up with a hair band, a flower tucked behind his ear from when you placed it there earlier, dirt smeared on his face, and neon pink gardening gloves on his hands.

“Smile!” You command with a laugh, holding up your phone. He didn’t have enough time to think of what he was doing before he flashed you a dazzling smile that made your heart flutter.

‘Well, I have my new wallpaper.’ You think to yourself as you grin down at your phone.

“Steven Grant Rogers, stop putting my mug on the top shelf! Unlike you, I am a short person who can’t reach it!” You yell as you walk into the kitchen that night and find Steve emptying the dish washer.

“I don’t put your mug on the top shelf, I always put it on the bottom.” He puts his hands up as if in surrender before pointing to your mug. And sure enough, it was on the bottom shelf of the cupboard.

“Then how does it get to the top shelf every morning?” You frown, crossing your arms.

“I was on a mission a few days ago and someone else emptied it, maybe they did.” He shrugs before returning to putting the dishes away.

Opening a screen located inside the island, you try to remember the first day it was on the top shelf. “FRIDAY, pull of video of the kitchen from four nights ago, fast forward.” Steve comes and stands beside you as you watch the playback of the night sped up. “Normal speed.” You order as you watch Bucky come on screen and begin putting the dishes away, and sure enough, puts your mug on the top shelf. “What a little shit, I asked him to get it down for me the next morning and he didn’t even tell me he was the one who did it.” you mutter with a shake of you head.

“But I was here the next day, and I put it on the bottom shelf.” Steve prompts, putting the pieces together as to what was going on.

“FRIDAY, go to the next night, fast forward,” You say, watching intently as people whiz quickly on the screen, including Steve putting the dishes away, as he said. Leaning against the counter, you and Steve waited as the foot traffic stopped and the lights went off, “I don’t understand, how did it-“ but you were cut short when the lights turned back on around 2am, and Bucky walked in, opened the cupboard, and put your mug on the top shelf. “Pause, please.” You ask FRIDAY and the picture stops. “Why would he do that?” Frowning, you ask the question more to yourself than to Steve. “Go to 24 hours later please,” And at the same time the next night, you saw Bucky come in and move your mug yet again. “I don’t understand.”

“Well, you said you asked him for help the first day, right?”

“Yeah and the next day I was just going to grab a stool but he grabbed it for me before I could.” Frowning in thought, you dismiss FRIDAY and close the screen.

“It could be because he liked helping you?” Steve offered, hoping you’d pick up on what was happening. You were smart, just oblivious sometimes. “That was the day he went to the farmer’s market with you, right? It could be that that gave him an excuse to be by you? You could ask him about it.”

“Could be.” You nod, staring to understand what was going on. “I’ll ask him about it.”

And by ask you meant wait until 2am and catch him in the act.

At around 1:45 you crept softly into the kitchen, keeping the lights off so Bucky wouldn’t think anything was out of the ordinary. Waiting in the darkness, you felt your heartbeat pick up with nerves. What if Steve was wrong? But why else would Bucky move your mug every day? When you heard footsteps approaching, you panicked and scurried softly away, staying low and peaking around the corner as Bucky entered the kitchen. You knew it was weird to spy, but you didn’t have the courage to confront him. You figured, tomorrow morning, you will quickly try to get the cup yourself without him interfering, and if he does, you’ll stay up the next night and confront him for sure.

“Good morning, Bucky!” You try to sound as normal as possible as you stroll into the kitchen.

“No nickname this morning?” He asks, a small amused smile on his lips that makes your heart swell with happiness.

“To be honest I’m running out of them. I thought about Buckaboo but that just sounds weird.” You laugh when he scrunches up his nose at the nickname, “See?” You tease as you open up the cupboard and prepare yourself to jump on the counter again. After making sure it was dry this time, of course. Putting your hands on the counter, you jump up, but as soon as your feet leave the ground you feel two strong hands on your waist, lifting you to reach your mug. After you clasped onto your mug tightly, he lowered you back to the ground. “Thank you,” You murmured, turning around to face him.

“Of course,” Bucky smiled, lingering in front of you for a moment before returning to his spot at the breakfast bar. After pouring your coffee and adding the amount of sugar you like, you took your place next to him, falling into your usual routine of talking at him. Though, today, he talked back, looked up from the paper, made eye contact, added comments here and there. You didn’t think you had been happier in years.

“I was thinking about going for a walk this morning, would you like to join me?” Bucky asks softly during a lull in conversation, turning the tables. You can tell he’s nervous by the way he’s fidgeting and avoiding eye contact, but his words are smooth, probably from rehearing it repeatedly.

“I’d love to, Bucky.” You grin.

You walked along the streets until you reached a small park. Collectively, you decided to sit on a bench and people watch for a bit, enjoying the nice weather.

“Bucky,” You say after a moment and he turns to look at you, “You do know there’s a video camera in the kitchen, right?” Watching as his face goes void of color and he starts to stammer something out but you just smile softly and hold up your hand to stop him. “Just tell me why, I want to understand.”

He takes a deep breath, looking down at his hands as he tries to formulate the right thing to say. “Every morning you always ask me to do something, anything, with you, to show, what I think and hope is, your affection. Or at least that you aren’t afraid of me, and enjoy my company. I guess I was looking for my own version of that to show you the same things.”

Scooting over on the bench you wrap your arms around him and pull him into a tight hug, “Thank you,”

“I looked up the full meaning of daffodils too, by the way.” He says as you pull away, and it was your turn for your face to go pale.

“I knew you shared the same sentiment about your title as I did, so I figured a flower that marked the end of winter would be appropriate.” You quickly tried to cover your tracks, hoping that was all that came up when he searched the meaning.

“It’s not unrequited.” He says simply, ignoring your explanation.

“it isn’t?” You choke out, you voice small as you look at him.

“It isn’t.” A large and genuine smile graces his lips, “Thank you for not giving up on me every time I turned you down for your morning activities.”

“Of course,” A bashful blush rises to your cheeks as you glance between his eyes and his smile.

“Can I kiss you?” He asks softly, and when you nod he closes the distance between you two, pressing a soft and sweet kiss to your lips.

[Extended ending]

“What the hell is this?” Natasha throws a tabloid magazine down on the table in front of you and Bucky as you drink your morning coffee together the next day.

You pick up the magazine and study the front page with your boyfriend. There was a picture of you two kissing in the park plastered across the front and smaller photos of your morning walks and farmer’s market visit scattered in the corners, headline reading “INFERNO AND WINTER SOLDIER COUPLE NAME: TEMPERATE?”

“Temperate, I dig it.” You nod, tossing the magazine back at the other woman and turning to Bucky, “What do you think?”

“I feel like Sam personally called them to give them that idea.” He chuckles with a shake of his head.

“I meant what the hell as in why didn’t you tell me you were together!” Natasha scolded you with her hands on her hips.

Let’s face it, we bookworms tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves, when it comes to our reading, because we’re weird like that, but in a good way. And, the truth is that reading should always be fun. Guilt free. ALL THE FUN SO MUCH OF THE FUN BECAUSE WORDS ON PAGES *insert screech* You know what I’m talking about. So I thought that compiling a list of the reasons that bookworms feel guilty and why they should just stop would be a great idea

  1. Not reaching our Goodreads challenge/lowering our goal for the year

In the past few years, the Goodreads challenge has become a staple of measuring achievement when it comes to reading. It has become insanely popular and it’s honestly such a good tool to keep track of everything you’re reading. But it also adds an immense amount of pressure. I’ve been there. When December rolls around and you see that you’re to the Goodreads challenge what Pluto is to being a planet in the Solar System (a.k.a. not even close; also VIVA LA PLUTO because Pluto deserved better smh), the panic sets in. You’re left with two options: lowering your goal or not finishing the challenge. Both make you feel like crap. But honestly, life makes us feel like crap far too many times, thank you very much, so let’s not let reading add to the ever growing pile of crap, am I right?

There’s no reason to feel guilty. If you read one book that year, you’re still a bookworm and it’s still a HUGE achievement. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t reach your challenge. It’s just a stupid tracking tool on the internet, it’s not something to measure your worth as a reader or as a person. You’re still awesome, even if you read just a page. Even one page counts. We’re busy, school and work get in the way 99% of the times. Unexpected life events occur. Shit happens. It’s normal and it’s expected, because life is fun and all that jazz.

Also, may I suggest a great idea: set your goal to one book for the year. Boom! Pressure off. You’ll still be able to see what books you read, how many pages and all that jazz, with the bonus that you don’t feel like hyperventilating every time you open your Goodreads account

  2. Not finishing books (the dreaded DNF)

Let me tell you something right off the bat: life is too short to waste on books that you’re not enjoying. Yes, I know, if you’re like me, you die a little on the inside every time you are at that point where you want to scream at the book you’re reading: BUT WHY ARE YOU NOT GOOD WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME WHO DID I OFFEND IN A PREVIOUS LIFE FML FML. It’s a reality. But let’s face it: you’re not going to enjoy every single book you pick up. It’s just not written in the stars. Which is why it’s perfectly acceptable to just…stop reading it. Put it down. Hug a kitten. Contemplate the universe. Leave it be. Maybe pick it up at a later time, maybe not. But don’t feel guilty. You didn’t disappoint the book, yourself, the book gods or literature as a whole. It just wasn’t meant to be and you should never force yourself to read a book you’re not enjoying. In my case, every time I force myself to keep going with a book I’m not enjoying, I tent to end up in The-Thing-That-Should-Not-Be-Named a.k.a. the Book Slump™. Just…no.

  3. Not reading classics

80% of the classics I’ve read have bored me to tears. I mean. I want me some dragons, magic and lost princesses. There are no such things in most classics (a huge oversight on the part of the writers, but I’m not pointing fingers). I’ve stumbled upon some that I really enjoyed, but too few to really make me actively pursue reading classics. The trouble is that a lot of people cringe so badly when you tell them that you don’t read classics.

“So yeah, I don’t really read or like classics”
“OMG HOW DARE YOU I AM OFFENDED”
“Um, I just..don’t really enjoy them/relate to the stories/want to live while I’m reading them”
“BLASPHEMY. SACRILEGE. BEGONE HEATHEN. SHAAAAME”

Whenever people react like this, it puts me off reading classics even more, because I hate judgy people. But I digress. My point is, the amount of classics that you read or don’t read doesn’t indicate how “good” of a reader you are (fyi, there are no good or bad readers imo). It’s just indicative of the genres you enjoy reading. That is all. People who read classics aren’t THE BEST BOOKWORMS™. They’re just people. Like you.

  4. Rereading books

I will shout this from the rooftops: I LOVE REREADING BOOKS. It’s something so refreshing and comfortable to go back to a book universe you fell in love with. To revisit favourite characters and go on adventures with them again. I reread at least a few books every year. Last year, I actively tried to reread at least one book each month. It was so much fun!

Rereading books can get you out of The Slump™. Rereading books is an excellent alternative for when you can’t afford to buy new books because stupid life costs money booooo. Rereading can be so insightful, because you notice so many things you missed on your first (or second, or third or…you get my drift) read. Rereading can be a whole new experience years after reading that book for the first time. Rereading a certain book can be the best for you at a certain time, because everything is familiar and safe. Rereading is absolutely no reason to feel guilty – people usually say they’re wasting time when they’re rereading (um, no), missing out on new releases (they’ll still be there a week later when you finish rereading your favourite book thank you very much), they fear not liking it as much the second time around (fine, I’ll give you this, it’s a possibility, BUT I ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE). Long story short: reread more books 2k17.

  5. Neglecting books because life

We’re bookworms, yes. But we’re also People Who Need To Live and Function in Society. What does this mean? That we sometimes don’t have that much time to read (I know, it’s just so rude). Days may pass when we don’t read at all. Weeks. Sometimes months. Years? (all my college years were spent reading almost academic books exclusively; it was a dark time in my life). But that’s okay. There’s no reason to feel guilty for doing our best to live out lives. Doing that sometimes implies giving up certain things, because we simply don’t have the time or energy to do them. That doesn’t make us bad people or bad readers. Your books will still be waiting for you when you have the time to devote them your full attention. Books don’t judge.

Surprisingly or not, this is just part one. I have many feelings about this particular topic, because I really really want people to read books guilt free. And live the bookworm life to the fullest

I’d love to hear your thoughts on these points. And if there was ever a time you felt guilty for something book related

Happy reading, bookish people <3

An Unconventional Hiveswap Dev Team Interview

Hey, it’s Cohen. Ash, our Associate Producer who usually runs these, is at E3 this week, so I’m doing the introduction. There was also a weird Affable Karkat vibe when he was answering this own questions, so I rewrote them a little. Here goes:

Obviously people sorta know you if they’ve been reading these interviews, but for the sake of the thing: What’s your name, and what do you do on the Hiveswap team?

Hello there! My name is Ash Paulsen, and I’m the Associate Producer on Hiveswap. As a producer, my basic role on the project is to help organize and sync up each department’s workflow while also facilitating effective interdepartmental communication. In layman’s terms: it’s my job to make everyone else’s jobs easier and do all the “in-between” stuff to help bring the game to the finish line, and that means I do whatever needs doing – which can vary from day to day!

How’d you get your start on Hiveswap?

This is actually a surprisingly straightforward story. Basically, What Pumpkin was looking to fill a producer position on Hiveswap, and luckily they were pointed in my direction by a mutual friend and colleague. So What Pumpkin then reached out to me via email, and I happened to be looking to take the next step in my career at the time. I then began a brief trial period as a part-time producer on Hiveswap to ascertain if the position would be an ideal fit for me. After a while, I was very graciously welcomed into the What Pumpkin family as a full-time producer – I must have impressed them somewhere along the way, and I’m happy I did!

Yeah, absolutely. Having a dedicated person for the work you’ve been doing has made my life easier. You’ve got some experience in 2D animation and video game production specifically, right?

My first production-related job came by way of Nickelodeon Animation several years ago, where I worked for about a year and a half as a Production Assistant on the Butch Hartman cartoons The Fairly OddParents! and T.U.F.F. Puppy. (Prior to that, I’d been working as a Game Master at Nexon – the developer of MapleStory – so this was a huge jump!) I later left Nickelodeon for a full-time position as the Senior Editor at UDON Entertainment, a publisher and art collective specializing in video game and anime art books. Somewhere along the way, I ended up taking on a second gig as an Associate Producer at ShiftyLook, where I got to help make super cool webcomics and web cartoons out of old-school, dormant Bandai Namco Games IPs, such as Bravoman and Wonder Momo.

It was that ShiftyLook job that reminded me just how much I loved producing and wanted to get back into it, so I put some feelers out there and when I was lucky enough to have What Pumpkin come knocking, I was ready to seize the opportunity!

Do you have any advice for someone looking to get into production? I don’t mean me, of course–it wasn’t until we brought you on that I realized how much production work I’d been doing as a matter of necessity, and I don’t want to go back to that life–but just, y’know. Tips and tricks for any aspiring producers.

In terms of advice for launching into a production career, I would say that a self-starter mentality and an honest willingness to take on pretty much any task – no matter how boring or menial – are key. I find that’s the best way to let people know you’re a team player and, in turn, get noticed! If something needs doing, just step up and do it! If you don’t know how to do it, ask questions, but do it nonetheless.

Yeah, including, when you’re not at E3, running these interviews. Speaking of, do you have any favorite games?

For someone who plays as many video games as I do – I’ve been an avid gamer since the original Super Mario Bros. captured my heart when I was just five years old – this is a surprisingly easy answer! My favorite game of all time is Chrono Trigger, a Super Nintendo JRPG you’ve probably heard of once or twice. That game is the total package: a gripping story, memorable characters, killer battle system, legendary soundtrack, and some of the Super Nintendo’s very best graphics. I think my favorite thing about Chrono Trigger is that the narrative can be as complex or as light as you want it to be; if you want to enjoy it as a simple time-traveling romp, you can do that and it’s great. But if you want to read between the lines and really dive into the lore where things get pretty dark and sophisticated, you can play it that way too and it’s even better in my opinion. It’s a game you can enjoy on your own terms, and for that reason and so many more, I just adore CT. My second and third favorites behind that are Okami and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

I just recently finished the Switch versions of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Blaster Master Zero, and Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, and right now I’m playing Horizon: Zero Dawn and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Looking ahead, I am unbelievably, ridiculously hyped for Sonic Mania and Kingdom Hearts III!

Do you pull any inspiration from those for your production work on Hiveswap?

Not in particular… I can’t think of much crossover between gaming and production work, either in terms of the skills required or really at all. I suppose there’s some tenuous connection between, like, turn-based strategy RPGs and project management, but even that’s reaching a bit.

Besides, working on Hiveswap is its own form of inspiration: I have the privilege of working with a team of wildly talented, creative folks on a daily basis, and when you’re surrounded by that much awesome every day, it’s hard not to be inspired to work harder and smarter!

Since this is a remote team, we’ve had people describe their workstations, which has been fun. What’s yours like?

I don’t really have a particular workstation, if that makes sense. Mine is mostly the kind of work that can be done anywhere as long as I have my laptop (I run with a MacBook Pro) and an Internet connection, so my workstation is generally wherever I want or need to be that day. Oftentimes that means a local coffee shop because I don’t fancy staying cooped up in my apartment alone every day, but if I have a full day of meetings I’ll usually stay home. The same ambient noise I go to coffee shops to enjoy tends to become a major liability when people are trying to hear you in a Google Hangout or Skype meeting!

Yeah, I can confirm that, having been in those meetings before you started staying home for them. What about music? Do you like to listen to anything while you’re working?

I constantly listen to music while I work – lots and lots of video game music! Game music has been my jam since I started burning line-out recordings of sound test menus to CDRs as a kid. (Not even kidding. The ‘90s, baby!) Usually it’s upbeat, driving chiptune anthems like the sort you hear in Mega Man games and other retro platformers like Shovel Knight, but I also love orchestral VGM like Final Fantasy  soundtracks. In fact, Yoko Shimomura – composer of the Kingdom Hearts games, among so many others – is my favorite musician of all time! I also listen to original chip music and a ton of EDM (electronic dance music, which encompasses so many other sub-genres) as well. I’ll give anything a chance, really!

Anything else you want to say to fans?

I’m genuinely appreciative of and humbled by the opportunity to leave my stamp on a universe as singularly compelling and bizarre as Homestuck. Despite my being a relative newcomer to the project and the wider Homestuck community, bringing Hiveswap to the finish line in a form that delivers on your expectations means the world to me and I take my role in that process very seriously. I’m really, really happy to be here!

Is there anywhere people can see more of your work?

As I touched on briefly earlier, I’m one of the GameXplain crew! If you’ve not heard of us, we’re a Nintendo-focused YouTube channel closing in on 800,000 (!) subscribers, though we also cover PlayStation and Xbox titles when time allows. You can find a link to our channel right here, where you’ll hear me yapping away in all sorts of discussions, previews, reviews, news updates, and more!

We’ll have Ash and the regular format back next week.

i can promise you that.

Pairing(s): Tom Holland x Reader, Peter Parker x Reader

Warnings: mentions of death, slight swearing

Summary: Reader is an actress who is cast in the second Spiderman film. While filming, Reader’s boyfriend admits some harsh news right before an emotional scene between Peter and Reader’s character. Tom notices that something is wrong and eventually comforts and cheers her up. This is somewhat platonic but can really be taken any way. Mostly angst but some really cute fluff

Notes: In light of the new Spiderman movie that is coming out in like, two days, here’s a little thing that I’ve been thinking of. I might do a small follow up one shot if you guys want! Feedback is super appreciated, too. Enjoyyy!

I’ve got my swim trunks, and my flippie-floppies

for @legividivici, hope you like it!! <3 (ao3)

The last place Clarke expected to run into anyone she knows is the literal middle of the ocean, but the cruise ship has barely left port before she spots a familiar head of tousled curls ahead of her in the crowd.

She loses sight of him before she can get a good look, so she chalks it up to her imagination. It’s entirely possible that Bellamy is on the same cruise she is– they did, after all, both just graduate, and therefore have the same budget and scheduling constraints– but she tells herself it probably isn’t him. And that even if it is him, it’s not like they’re going to run into each other.

So of course the next day she’s on one of the decks by the pool when a shadow falls over her and his voice says, “Is this chair taken?”

Clarke pushes her sunglasses up on top of her head and wrinkles her nose at him.

“I don’t know, I my tiara really ought to have a chair of its own.”

Bellamy smirks and sits on the edge of the chair, not moving her stuff– not yet– but settling in to bicker with her. As is their custom.

She and Bellamy were RAs in the same dorm two years ago, and they had differing ideas at first about how hands-on they needed to be with their freshmen. Despite the way they picked at each other, by the end of the year they’d become reluctant allies, his calling her ‘Princess’ taking on less of a sneer and more of a teasing edge, her comebacks laced with a smile. They had each other’s backs.

But she didn’t re-up her RA contract for her senior year, and he did, and they’re not the type of friends to outright admit they miss each other, so she hasn’t seen nearly as much of him in the past couple of semesters as she would like.

“You here with Wells?”

“And Raven,” she nods. “I was saving those seats for them, but I’m pretty sure they ditched me to have tiny cabin sex.”

“O and Lincoln ditched me pretty fast too. I think they’ve all forfeited their right to a saved seat,” he grins, passing her bag back to her. The way he lounges back in the chair, skin already browning, wind ruffling his hair, he looks like something straight out of an ad. Or Clarke’s fantasies. Either one, really.

Just because she used to think he was a Class-A dick (which he is, but not in the way she thought. In the fun way.) doesn’t mean she’s never noticed how great his hands are, or how he’s got perfect hair for pulling, or how there’s probably more than one way to wipe a smirk off his face.

“Sure, make yourself at home,” she grumbles. He grins at her and pulls his shirt off, which is– honestly just so unfair.

“Don’t mind if I do.”

All Our Secrets Laid Bare (Part Three)

Pairing: Peter Parker x reader

Prompt: A couple of weeks have passed  since Peter and the reader had their little “fight.” Neither of them have yet to talk to one another though. Something has to be done about it, and Michelle is the one to make sure of that.

Warnings: None

Word Count: 3,311

Notes: Sorry for any grammatical mistakes. I know that I said in the last part that I wanted to stretch out this story and make it more realistic, but then I realized while writing this part that I kind of want to move on from this imagine. So this part is a bit rushed and I apologize.
Anyway, enjoy!

Part One / Part Two

It’s had been two weeks (twelve days, twenty hours, and forty-two minutes, to be exact, but who was counting?) since that fateful night on the rooftop. Almost two whole weeks without any sort of contact from your ex-best friend, Peter Parker. You thought that you were handling it well enough though. Sure, you spent most of your after school and evening time alone, in your parentless apartment, wondering what fun things you could be doing with Peter, and regretting that night with a passion, but you had some things to distract you as well. Television was a great distraction; Netflix was a real life-saver. There was also cooking. Being left home alone while your parents were away for business was enough of a semi-regular occurrence that you managed to pick up a few culinary skills over the years. You could make a damn good chicken parmesan. There was also Michelle, aka M.J.

After that first day, when Michelle came to comfort you in the school’s bathrooms, she and you had started to become really good friends. You both figured out that you had a lot of the same interests, as well as the same classes. So every school day, you had the chance to hang out with her and grow your friendship even more. It was nice having someone to talk to during a time like this. Not having Peter around made you seem like the loneliness person in the world. Michelle was no Peter, no one could match what Peter was to you, but she was a really awesome friend nonetheless. She was a great listener and had some quality conversions up her sleeve. There was something about her that just made you want to trust her.

That said, the two of you weren’t really at the “come over and spend time at my apartment” stage of the friendship. The two of you talked over the weekends, but those conversations were usually short and cut off. Michelle would always ask when you would talk to Peter again, to which you typically (and playfully) ignored her from that point on. You understood that she was trying to be nice, and just wanted the two of you to make up, but every time you even thought about talking to Peter, you would convince yourself that you weren’t ready rather than imagine a scenario where the two of you talked like mature adults. Progress was being made though. After several days, you were at the point where you could actually look at the boy and not burst into tears. You even smiled at him while passing in the hallway one day. You were getting better, but you weren’t quite there yet. Or maybe you were and you just were too afraid to do anything. You told yourself it was the former.
