A Taste of the Oscars

The biggest night of Hollywood is right around the corner. Who can resist an evening spent watching the stars on parade?  We love to invite our friends to put on celeb-inspired finery and gather round to watch Oscars.  But what to offer a crowd of hungry pop culture junkies?

In honor of ABC’s hit TV show, The Taste, we’ve put together a mouthwatering menu to celebrate each of this year’s Best Picture nominees:

Because Argo is a story of Canadian courage, we suggest wowing your guests with a plate of poutine. A traditional Quebecois late-night dish, poutine is french fries decadently covered  in cheese and gravy.

Les Miserables

Our hero, Jean Valjean, or prisoner 24601, is jailed for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister’s hungry children.  Bread plays an iconic role in this historical drama centering around the French Revolution. So what is more appropriate than breaking a hot, crusty baguette among friends?

Django Unchained

The fantastically blood-soaked Quentin Tarantino masterpiece, Django Unchained, is enough to make anyone’s head spin.  The movie features a dinner scene at Calvin Candie’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) plantation.  This bourbon cocktail, named Candyland, after Calvin Candie’s infamous home, will be the highlight of the evening.

As its title character is notorious for being a light eater, food plays a small role in the 2012 motion picture Lincoln.  Still, the man liked apples and what’s more American than the classic apple pie?  It’s the perfect something sweet to offer your guests at the end of the night.

Will you watch the Oscars this Sunday?

The Taste and suck offs

Yet another good season. The chefs didn’t seem quite into as the previous season, but this holiday episode was energetic.

They have a new competition where the two chefs that suck that day have a suck off! They go head to head creating a competing dish in this suck off while being personally mentored by one of the judges. There is only one winner!

Happiest Friday: It's National Margarita Day

The classic margarita has three ingredients:

Lime juice
Triple Se

A purist eschews ice, alternate flavors, and even the salted (or sugared) rim. But a margarita is like a good cheese pizza: the fun is in the add-ons.

So first we’ll show you the basics, then kick it up a notch with some options:

Of course, like all classics, the Margarita has many iterations that go in and out of style.  So what’s a high-spirited fashionista to do? Look no further than the Prickly Pear Margarita for a cocktail as on-trend as your bag.

The perfect happy hour accessory, the Prickly Pear Margarita hails from the Southwest where the Prickly Pear cactus has long been a food staple for the Native American tribes there.  In fact, in the 1500’s a Spanish explorer reported Native American tribes celebrating the harvest of the Prickly Pear with festivities similar to Mardis Gras.  Finally, the cocktail comes in such sublime shade of pink that it almost looks too good to drink! …Almost.

Sound too sweet to you? Get your fierce on with this recipe ripped from the menu of NYC’s hottest margarita spot: Barrio Chino. Famous for it’s Grapefruit Juice and Habanero Margarita, we searched the interwebs high and low to discover the much-coveted recipe.

Spice it up: Grapefruit & Habanero Margarita

Watching your figure? Unfortunately, the margarita can quickly become a high-calorie indulgence. Adding juice and simple syrups causes the sugar content to spike. But don’t worry, dieting divas! You don’t have to sit out of the party. There are enough tasty, low-calorie margaritas to go around.  We especially love this Slim and Sparkling Lemon Lime Margarita which features flavored sparkling water, so you can have all the zesty flavor without the guilt.

So tell us, will you be celebrating National Margarita Day? Which libation will you enjoy?
