there were like thousands of girls

This post was triggered by something that @roachpatrol said over here about the expectation for girls to be sweet and clean and harmless:

Holy shit, if I was eight years younger and wandering into fandom for the first time, I can guarantee that the culture right now would’ve fucked me up and ground me down and taken away all my healthy outlets.

Picture: you are a girl at the tender young age of mumbledyteen. Up until this point you have been taught that all dark thoughts are literally hand-delivered into your head by the devil, and that the only correct method of dealing with negativity is to ignore them and pray harder. Concentrate on what is good and righteous and pure to the exclusion of all else, this is how you be a good person.

You are also a fully-functioning human being, one who can feel stressed or lonely or angry or any number of bad things. Mostly, with emotions that are still working themselves out, you feel this rumbling, white-hot white noise under everything, all the time. Sometimes it rolls in like a thunderstorm and everything else gets drowned out, and sometimes it’s only quietly muttering in the distance. Either way it’s always there, and the sound shreds uncomfortably at the inside of your brain.

When you were younger, before you were in charge of your own media consumption, your brain would shred up a myriad of saccharine stories to try and match the noise of the shredder in your head. Bad things happening, people getting hurt, characters trapped in unhealthy relationships of all kinds.

Fanfiction, the product of a hundred thousand other mumbledyteens whose brains are all screaming the same way, makes something in your brain go ping

Unfortunately, if the planet had ever been united on any single message, it was probably that no matter how you feel: 1) your feelings weren’t unique 2) they didn’t matter 3) they didn’t matter because they weren’t unique, they were shared among millions of hysterical, worthless teenaged girls just like you.

Fandom was confirmation of the first, but (with some hiccups along the way) outright rejection of the last two. Fuck you, our feelings do matter, and this is a story just for us.

A disclaimer: these aren’t good stories, otherwise they wouldn’t have to be defended. Their flavor of topic is not within societally acceptable bounds. Fictional characters have sex and get tortured and raped and abused, but their screaming harmonizes with the pitch of the shredder when it’s burrowing deepest.

As a teenager I never thought that my feelings were important enough to deal with, but these stories let me look at them sideways. Audience catharsis is the whole point of tragedy, after all.

And hell, these days I’m a happy, healthy adult who barely even has the urge to go looking for whump fic when I’ve had a bad week. I’m not going to forget just how much bad stuff that fic helped me air out, though, not ever. (Not to mention that thanks to all of those abuse!fics, I can recognize an unhealthy relationship at 500 paces, even if the fictional abuse was depicted as something loving and romantic. Abusers in real life don’t go around with helpful warning tags on their sleeves anyway.)

But holy shit, can you imagine if I’d found fandom as it is today.

Yes, your church is right, your family is right. Horrible things in stories are only there because they were written by horrible people, and they’re only popular because horrible people read them. The very concepts they address corrupt everything they touch.

That shredder in your head, the one that takes innocent cartoons but then shits out sadness and mayhem? That’s disgusting, you’re disgusting. How dare you think about minors having underaged sex, you minor? How dare you consider another person getting hurt? Your feelings don’t matter, they aren’t unique, they’re shared with all kinds of worthless shitbags just like you.

Every ounce of what you read and write and enjoy is going to be weighed for sin and tested for purity. You know, just like the rest of your life, except this time there’s no deity who’s handing out second chances.

Maybe that’s what bothers me most about all of this. It’s the same petty fandom bullshit as always, but “you’re wrong for liking a ship because IT WILL NEVER BE CANON” is a hell of a lot easier to laugh off when you’re young than “you’re wrong for liking a ship because YOU’RE AN ABUSIVE PEDOPHILE AND IF SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS IT’S YOUR FAULT FOR PERPETUATING IT.”

My fault, my bad thoughts, no outlet for any of them. The message to repress all the bad things so I can look like a good person, but my brain is so full of unprocessed shit that it’s solidified. Nobody actually saved any real children, but my brain sure is getting a second dose of fucked-up.

Are the people getting attacked going to be okay, will they be able to go and address their braingremlins somewhere else? I’d also ask if the people doing the attacking are okay, with all of the denial and repression they must deal with, but it seems like they’ve got venting pretty well handled by taking it out on strangers.

Hey, c’mon, calm down friends. I bet I’ve read a story that’s got a character screaming at just the same pitch you are.

It helps to read one of those and harmonize your voices, I promise.

pidge: keith i have a gay problem and need the help of a gay who is more experienced

keith: ok. what is it?

pidge: i like this girl but there’s no way she likes me back and i dunno what to do about it

keith: nothing. absolutely nothing. you do nothing, and then you do your best to ignore it but it’s just eating at you and it’s so hard to pretend it’s not there so then you watch ten thousand heteronormative hallmark movies but eventually you start getting daydreams about how great your life would be if you actually were dating and how much fun you’d have doing the cheesiest coupley stuff and you aren’t even paying attention to the hallmark movies anymore they’re just lights and sounds in the background of your daydreams but we’re in space so you don’t even have the hallmark movies so you just go straight to the daydreams and you get this idea in your head that if you two date you’ll finally be a happy functional person and you won’t have any more problems ever and you know that’s not true but you still wanna believe it anyway and now the crush is getting bigger and bigger and you’re even more of a mess and you talk to your friend about it since he says he’s always there if you need someone to listen so you think that’ll help a little bit but it turns out it doesn’t because your friend is an asshole and says “well why don’t you just tell him?” but if i could tell him then this wouldn’t. be a problem, shiro!

keith: (breathing heavily)

pidge:

pidge:

pidge: actually i think i’m gonna go to lance

keith: …good plan.

pretty fucked up that straight girls are allowed to go on and on about how hot their friends are and say ‘im straight but i’d fuck that female celebrity’ and call each other 'my wife’ and shit and nobody bats an eye but the second a lesbian even mentions that one (1) guy is attractive a demonic choir of ten thousand hetero voices rings out from the depths of hell saying 'i thought you were gay????’ like……chill it’s honestly not that deep lmao

i am holding hands with a girl at the pet store. i love how her voice changes when she speaks to different animals. round and bubbly for the angelfish, high and breathy for the calico kittens, sonorous and slithery for the python. she loves them all, even the great hairy tarantula that makes me cringe.

i am holding hands with this girl whose halo of hair glows banana yellow under the heat lamps in the reptile section, who offers her index finger to teething kittens. she asks “can’t we have one?” in the voice she uses for only me. a voice i can’t describe without using her name, but i imagine joan of arc heard something similar the day she picked up a sword. she is still holding my hand, and i feel like i’d sink into cartoon quicksand if i let go. so i don’t.

“are you two… together?”

this is not unfamiliar, but the woman’s voice, the voice she has chosen, is angrily acidic. this woman has laced her tone with arsenic, without even a passive aggressive teaspoon of sugar to hide her poison. she inhales, puffing herself up like a frightened lizard before her final words.

“there are children here, you know.”

in the future, i think of a thousand things to say. we were children too. two girls holding hands after school. two girls holding hands at the movie theatre, two girls in a booth at tony’s pizza, two girls sharing awkward first kisses after two solo cups of wine in someone else’s backyard. two girls holding kittens at a pet store on a saturday afternoon.

i know now that they see us through funhouse mirrors: distorted, disturbed, our monstrous bodies taking too much space, spoiling innocent spaces with our imposing sexualities. our innocence never ours to begin with.

even with this, there is nowhere i would rather be than holding hands with her in a pet store, with her voice like rain on a hot day, her peach lips blowing kisses for fish, her grip tightening as if to say “i dare you to take this away from me.”

Being Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Daughter...
  • Lin would cry the day you were born but he would also brag a lot.
  • He’d shower you with gifts but he was also careful not to overdo it
  • Chances are, (depending on your age and whatever year you’d picture this for) you’d be friends with a lot of the Hamilton cast/ and or their kids
  • There’s no doubt about it you’d be a freestyling genius much like him and musically talented.
  • And Lin would be so proud of this
  • Lin’s heart would melt every time you called him ‘dad’
  • He is probably one of the most caring, sweetest, and involved father out there.
  • And if your mother wasn’t in the picture, Lin would be sure to work to fill in her shoes.
  • He would attend all your school events and extra curriculars too.
  • On mother’s day he would plan a brunch inviting his sister and mother over making sure you knew you weren’t alone when it came to the amount of females in your life.
  • Whenever he goes to Richard Rodgers Theatre or goes to work for whatever project he’s working on he is constantly pulling his phone out to show his fellow coworkers pictures of you
  • He can’t help it
  • But one thing is for sure, Lin would make sure you knew how strong of a woman you were. Being a strong activist for equal rights Lin knew how easy it was for girls in today’s society to feel weak and defeated by the powerful and he never wanted you to experience that. So he would make post-it notes and stick them in your lunchbox, on your mirror, and anywhere he could find with sayings such as…
  • “I am woman hear me roar!”
“Though she be but little, she is fierce!”
“A strong woman looks fear in the eye and gives it but a wink.”
“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.”
  • And because your father is one of the most encouraging and inspiring figures in the world, not only in tweets but reality as well, he excels at giving the best, most needed pep talks when you’re down in the dumps.
  • Lin had you speaking Spanish as soon as you said your first word
  • Lin would practically document your entire life. He liked taping you and taking pictures while you were doing casual activities such as coloring, singing, dancing, playing with your dolls, running around the house, etc.
  • Tobillo basically being your best friend
  • That dog follows you wherever you go
  • Lin has thousands of videos from when you were learning to walk, practically waddling around and Tobillo was right on your heel the entire time following you.
  • The whole Hamilton cast would be obsessed with you
  • Especially Phillipa
  • That girl loved you as if you were her own
  • And if you were old enough, you would join the Schuyler Sisters in their inbetween shows closet talk.
  • Sleep overs at Jasmine and Anthony’s while your dad is out of town
  • And they would absolutely LOVE having you over
  • You made them want to have kids that much more and Anthony loved taking you to the movies and Jasmine loved taking you out shopping
  • Speaking of shopping, Renee, Jasmine, and Phillipa are always spoiling you with the newest trends and what nots.
  • The Hamilton cast would be like another family to you
  • Always running around backstage with Groffsauce, who usually was assign babysitting duty.
  • The Schuyler sisters- as well as Leslie teaching you how to harmonize
  • Daveed loved helping you with your freestyling
  • You and him always got in heated battles- in good spirits of course
  • Playing childish games during intermission and between shows with Oak, Daveed, and Anthony.
  • Trying to braid your dad’s hair during his Hamilton days
  • Let’s be real, Lin would dedicate Dear Theodosia to you
  • And during Stay Alive (reprise) and It’s Quiet Uptown he had genuine tears pinching at his eyes as he fathomed the thought of losing you
  • But Lin would always run to you and spin you around every night after shows
  • The two of you would walk hand and hand together home and Lin would sing you to sleep every night
  • He’d love making you breakfast and basking in that domestic life
  • I could see him making some of the best pancakes in the world
  • And one morning when you were little, you convinced him to let you have a sip of his coffee
  • “Daddy, what’s that black stuff in there.”
    “It’s called coffee, bebé.”
    “Can I try some?”
“Uh, I don’t think so, Y/n. You wouldn’t like it.”
    “Please, papi.”
    “Oh alright.”
  • Like he predicted, you hated it. The liquid burned your throat and young little you cried at the bitterness for at least a minute which broke Lin’s heart.
  • Lin would be the type of parent that would love to show you off to family and friends but when it came to posting pictures of you on social media, he usually made sure your face was covered, just to keep an element of privacy in his life.
  • But he does love tweeting stories about you or cute things that you do
  • Your childhood years would be a little hectic. Lin probably wouldn’t be around as much as he wants with filming, acting, composing and all but he would make an effort of a lifetime to be as involved as possible.
  • By your late teens you had already seen much of the world but that didn’t mean you were bored by any mean. Adventure was in your soul.
  • Lin would spend a lot of time with you during his time working with the film Moana. He liked to come to you to find inspiration.
  • Family trips to Disney World and Land
  • Lin is constantly trying to help you with his homework
  • “You know I was a teacher.”
  • Coming to him when you start learning about the American Revolution
  • “Well I mean you came to right person. I did write an entire musical about this stuff. Just use the album for a reference, it’s mostly accurate.”
  • Walking into your house one day after school infuriated as you set your pop quiz on the Schuyler Sisters in front of him, a large 9/10 circled with red pen.
  • “And I quote, I’m the oldest and the wittiest… My father has no sons… dad you cost me a perfect score! Why did you lie in the lyrics, I thought you said I could trust them!”
“I’m sorry I forgot they had other siblings!”
  • Similar to your father, you swore like a sailor
  • Which also meant you were constantly getting scolded and death glares from your father who claims “He didn’t raise you to speak like that.” Even though you both know he did.
  • But honestly I could see Lin being into girl drama. Like when he picks you up from school and sees an annoyed look on your face he’d just shake his head and say,
  • “Spill the tea, honey. I’m ready!”
  • And on your bad days after dropping you off at home after school, Lin would drive to the nearest DQ and Chick-Fil-A and movie store returning home with gifts in toll.
  • He was one of the only people in the world you trusted enough to tell everything too
  • Dad jokes, so many dad jokes.
  • “Dad I’m thirsty. Do we have any-“
“Hi thirsty nice to meet you I’m Lin-Manuel.”
  • Being very close with your grandparents
  • Your grandpa teaching you how to cook
  • Your grandma would spoil you tbh
  • Girl talk with your Aunt Luz
  • Your dad would be really big on making sure you knew and understood the importance of equality and treating others with respect.
  • Weekly meals at their place where your grandpa is also telling tales
  • “You know pequeño, when your father was your age I couldn’t get him to shut up!”
    “Papi-“
“He was always doing his rapping, talking fast and never making sense but he had passion just like yourself so don’t you ever give up on yourself carino. If your father did he would not be where he is today- and neither would you.”
    “Thank you abuelo.”
  • And when you finally do make it, doing whatever or being wherever that may be, you’ll have Lin’s as well as the rest of your families support because Lin knows exactly what it feels like to have millions of people doubt you and laugh at you for doing the unexpected so his support will never run out.
  • When Lin finds out you have a passion for writing and composing, he immediately takes you with him for a daddy daughter date to the studio.
  • He pretends to be out of ideas for a song and you play along knowing it would be a lot less painful to take the easy path.
  • “Well there are a few different projects I’ve been working on lately. They aren’t too good… pretty shitty-“
    “Y/n.”
“Sorry… but uh, you can have a look I suppose.”
  • Becoming a co writer beside your dad on his next project
  • Going on walks and hikes together with Tobillo
  • But for real though Lin would be insanely protective over you
  • Like when it comes to you Lin always needs to know where you are and constantly has eyes on you
  • When you got your first boyfriend/girlfriend Lin would FLIP
  • You’d suddenly become a player in the game ’21 questions’ or more like 101 questions when it came to your dad
  • He demanded meeting your significant other and no matter the gender, he held his strong demeanor and hardly cracked a smile- well until he saw how happy you looked in their presence.
  • But eventually he’d come to term with it. Although he would always see you as his little girl, he knew you had to spread your wings and he was not about to hold you back from doing so.
  • And when you finally land a lead role on an upcoming Broadway show, Lin is ecstatic.
  • Every day he calls you to ask how rehearsals are going partly because he’s interested and excited for you but also because he remembers his restless days and nights where he’d come home so stressed he’d forget to eat for days. He didn’t want to see you go through the hardships he did.
  • Ironically enough the new production is held, opening night, in the same old theater you grew up in, Richard Rodgers. Home sweet home.
  • And on opening night you can guarantee your father is sitting front row with four bouquets of various flowers surrounded by all your family and friends as well as a handful of the original and new Hamilton cast.
  • And he would cry. A lot.
  • But he would also be that dad that right before the show starts, as the lights are dimming, he stands up and shouts,
  • “Go Y/n!”
  • His proud dad tweets would be never ending that night
  • After the production he was sure to be the first backstage and the first to hug you.
  • “You did it, you did it! I’m so proud of you, mi ángel. Congratulations!”
  • You’d be lying to yourself if you said your dad didn’t have a surprise party planned for after the play because he did.
  • Not to be a downer but there would be days where Lin would cry himself to sleep thinking he hasn’t done enough, or given you the life you deserve. He worked himself far too hard to make sure you had everything you could ever need and knew you were loved, but sometimes he couldn’t help but fear the worst.
  • Although at times he can be overbearing, you wouldn’t want it anyway else.

This was so fun to write oh my lord, hope you enjoyed!

Ruin my chances at my dream job, will you? Please, let me return the favor.
(long story. tl;dr at the end)

I am a nurse. When I was in nursing school, I loved my rotation through ICU and wanted nothing more than to be an ICU nurse, because I eventually wanted to become a nurse anesthetist (ICU experience is required for anesthesia school). My first job after graduation was not in ICU, but after 10 months as a nurse, I was offered a position in a Multi-system ICU. It was a training program for new nurses and I was told I would get 16 weeks of training. Fantastic! I was so excited! Then right before I started, I was told, oops, no, you actually only get 6 weeks of training. Um, okay, kind of concerned that that’s not enough time, but I’m going to try my best. I was somewhat apprehensive, but still excited. Until I met my preceptor.

This girl was undoubtedly intelligent and knew her job, but she was so mean to me that I was regularly having near-panic attacks in the few weeks I worked there. She would send huge emails to the educator about how much I sucked, and would ream me out in front of other staff and patients (one time one of the other nurses had to intervene). The other girl who started the program at the same time as me even said how awful my preceptor was being to me. She was also arrogant as fuck, and always bragged about shit, like how her fiancé (who was a practicing nurse anesthetist and made a lot of money) paid all this money for her engagement ring, and paid all this money for his surprise proposal, and how once they were married and had kids if she wanted a thousand dollar baby stroller, that’s what he was going to buy her, and how her wedding was going to be so big and fancy and expensive and perfect. And she was one of those people who was “super Christian,” and was fake nice and passive aggressive when talking to you that it starts to make you wonder if you’re crazy for seeing the vile in them. I hated her with the fire of a thousand burning suns.

Foreign

Plot: Jimin always thought his traditional Korean girlfriend was perfect – that was, until he realized how beautiful foreigners could be.

Pairing: Idol!Park Jimin x Backup Dancer!Reader

Genre: Angst, Fluff

Notes: I based this off of every single MTL I have seen of BTS dating a girl of a different race or a girl of color – Jimin always seems to be one of the people who were least likely to date one. I definitely do not think that Jimin is this ignorant in any way. This is only a work of fiction. This is for all the international beauties! 2,536 Words

“Oppa, I’m missing you so much!”

“I’m missing you too, my love. Don’t worry, I’ll be back in a few days, okay?”

One of the worst parts about tour was leaving lovers behind. For Jimin, it wasn’t only his lover, it was his home. He enjoyed tour, performing for all of the ARMYs around the world, going on stage; but he wasn’t a huge fan of being in a foreign country. He didn’t know English that well, and he wasn’t fond of being in a place where he couldn’t understand anything.

“I know,” The soft voice of his significant other brought pink to his cheeks. “Call me when your rehearsal is over.”

“I will, I love you,” He glanced at the leader of his band, who was calling him over.

“I love you too.”

With that, he had ended the call with a sigh, and headed over to his band. It hadn’t even been a few minutes since he cut the call, and he was already missing her – a thought he had experienced after each long-distance conversation with his lover. The short male shook his head and got his head back in the game, his eyes going up to meet a group of people dressed in black.

“This is your dance crew for this city,” The manager announced to the band. “Not all of them know Korean, so if you have an queries, just talk to Jihoon. He is the leader.”

“We understand.”

Once that brief introduction was done, they were all left to their own devices for a few minutes, whilst the leader of the dance team talked to the leader of the band. Jimin had let himself scan over the people he would be working with; not that he would talk to them, he was just curious and bored. Most of them had masks on – no one had really caught his eyes, except for one person.

Maggie Stiefvater talks 'All the Crooked Saints,' and here's a first look at the cover

Maggie Stiefvater may have concluded the Raven Cycle just last year, but the author already has a new stand-alone YA novel hitting shelves later this year.

The book, titled All the Crooked Saints, takes place in the 1960s in Bicho Raro, Colorado and follows the lives of three members of the Soria family-each of whom is searching for their own miracle. There’s Beatriz, who appears to lack feelings but wants to study her mind; Daniel, the “Saint” of Bicho Raro, a miracle worker for everyone but himself; and Joaquin (a.k.a. Diablo Diablo), who runs a pirate radio station at night.

Adding to the mystery (and magic) of the book is the book’s intriguing cover-which EW is pleased to reveal exclusively below.

“There are owls in the book because owls are a very scientific creature that gets credited with a lot of magical superstitions,” Stiefvater tells EW. “There are roses in the book because roses are a very magical flower that take a lot of science to truly understand. Put that together and well - as the kids say, that’s it. That’s the book.”

With Stiefvater’s latest novel set to hit stores on Oct. 10, EW caught up with the bestselling author to find out more about what’s in store for readers, her process, and of course, her upcoming Ronan Lynch trilogy.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: All three of your characters are looking for a miracle. What do miracles, or the idea of miracles mean to them?
MAGGIE STIEFVATER: Miracles! Miracles! Miracles! This book is full of them. I was taught by nuns for the first dozen years of my life, and so I was raised with a pantheon of peculiar saints: decapitated saints who carried their own severed head through the streets of cities, saints who exorcised demons from the bottoms of milk pails, saints who flew unexpectedly.

The Soria family are saints as well, and the miracle they perform for pilgrims to Bicho Raro is as strange as most miracles are: They can make the darkness inside you visible. Once the pilgrims see their inner darkness face to face, it’s up to them to perform another miracle on themselves: banishing the darkness for good. It can be a tricky business to vanquish your inner demons, even once you know what they are, but the Sorias are forbidden to help with this part. They’ve all been told that if a Soria interferes with the second miracle, it will bring out their own darkness, and a saint’s darkness, so the story goes, is a most potent and dangerous thing.

The three cousins in the story all have their own relationship with the family miracles: Daniel, the current acting Saint of Bicho Raro, wants to help the pilgrims overcome their darkness through holiness and empathy. Beatriz, on the other hand, would prefer if the Sorias approached the miracle from a more logical and scientific place. And Joaquin is less interested in miracles and more interested in broadcasting rock & roll from a pirate radio station in the back of a battered box truck.

How did you come up with the name “Bicho Raro”?
I’d just finished writing the rather heavy final installment of the Raven Cycle, and I thought it would be nice to switch things up with something playful and - dare I say it? “Feel good”? Does that sound like a Stiefvater novel to you?

So I tried to be as playful in my language as I could. I figured if my words were frolicking, readers might too. “Bicho raro” (“rare bug”) is just a little way to speak fondly about odd people, like “strange bird” or “odd duck.” It’s less about the Soria family themselves and more about the varied pilgrims who come to Bicho Raro.

What inspired the novel’s setting?
Three years ago, I convinced Scholastic that instead of flying to all of my tour events for Sinner, the companion book to the Shiver trilogy, I would instead drive my 1973 Camaro to them. Seven thousand miles, coast to coast, just an American girl in a muscle car, seeing the breadbasket of our fine country while hawking a novel about burned-out werewolves - nothing could go wrong.

Spoiler: Everything went wrong. I spent my time evenly divided between meeting readers and repairing the Camaro by the side of the road.

At one point, the brakes went out (for the second time), and I coasted into an auto repair shop in Del Norte, Colorado. The sun was white, the air was dust, and the mountains were sharp as hell all around. While I waited for the mechanic to take a look at my brake lines, the receptionist told me tall tales and ghost stories about straight-arrow desert roads and demons dancing in the dust and strangers appearing in the night.

I thought to myself: This is where my next novel takes place.

What made you decide to set All the Crooked Saints in the 60s? Is there something in the history of Colorado at that time that speaks to you?
Music! Music! Music! When I was growing up in the 80s, my father always had the radio set to the Golden Oldies - I didn’t realize, in fact, that it wasn’t contemporary music. I thought Del Shannon and Patsy Cline and the Byrds were everyone’s current groove. Even after I discovered differently, it didn’t matter; that music had become the sound of my childhood. There’s something about 60s music and the 60s in general that I think pairs perfectly with a novel about the teen experience - 60s America was going through an adolescence in a lot of ways, and it was a time of mystical joy, innocence lost, increasingly uncomfortable self-awareness of the limitations of tradition, and colorful agitation for change, all of it emotional and urgent. If that’s not a description of being a teen, I don’t know what is.

I’ve been dying to write a novel steeped with the music of that time for about five years now, and for this one, it made sense. I had an incredibly grand and self-indulgent time listening to the music Joaquin and Beatriz spin in their covert broadcasts.

Your work has always been infused with aspects of magical realism. What would you say are some of your influences?
Magic! Magic! Magic! For this book in particular, Isabel Allende, Gabriel Garca Mrquez, Erick Setiawan, Ali Shaw, and maybe even John Irving - I have read a lot of wonderful magic realism and wry, intimate family stories over the last decade, and Saints is my affectionate nod to them. It was also informed by movies, though - I really wanted to capture the mood of films like Big Fish, Chocolat, and Amlie. That whimsy and magic and nostalgia. These are strange, hard times that we’re living in, and I wanted to write about magic - I always do - but I also felt like I wanted to leave readers with something that made them happy, hopeful, and excited about all the odd miracles that exist in the world and in themselves.

Of course, I have to ask one question about the upcoming Ronan trilogy. Is there anything you could tease about it?
Insert, Stiefvater said, an enigmatic smile here.

All the Crooked Saints will be available for purchase on Oct. 10.

Danish Bronze Age elite buried in fancy woolly hats and shawls, 3,500-year-old graves reveal

High-status Bronze Age Danes wore intricate wool clothes that were made hundreds if not thousands of miles away, to show how well-travelled and wealthy they were. The first wide-scale study of wool clothes from the period has revealed how this elite class began to emerge in the 2nd millennium BCE.

The most famous of the elite western Danes is one known as Egtved Girl. She was between 16 and 18 years old when she died in 1370 BCE. She was buried wearing a tunic and skirt, a large bronze belt plate decorated with spirals, a delicate earring, a comb and a dagger.

This finely made outfit was preserved, like many others in the region, thanks to the unique conditions created in her burial mound. A layer of iron that was deposited around the oak coffin she was buried in helped to create an oxygen-free and acidic environment around the body. …It’s finally over. Pariah is back in the sarcophagus of forever sleep, the town is out of the Ghost Zone and all the ghosts are back in their own lairs. He’s so exhausted not even his Ghost Sense could wake him from his slumber.

Even if the ghosts were inside his room watching.

for the tropes! maybe a matchmaker au?

[put a fanfic trope in my inbox and I’ll describe the fic I’d write!]

OKAY BUT HOW CAN I DO THIS WITHOUT MAKING SHITTY THE MATCHMAKER.

Shitty knows a lot and he knows he knows it. So when the illustrious Jack Zimmermann comes into his “relationship clinic,” Shitty has a thousand pieces of advice for him. First of all, Jack should learn to enjoy himself a little. Nobody wants to date a boy who’s not into having fun. Loosen up. And learn how to make conversation. And maybe learn to flatter a little. Shitty will fix him up with a nice girl, but Shitty’s going to recommend his favorite dating coach, Eric Bittle, to give Jack some lessons on how to treat a lady.

Eric Bittle has a thousand words of advice for Jack as well. They do a mock date, and Eric says things like “Okay, Jack, right now I’m eyeing my phone about to send a text to my best friend telling her to rescue me.” “Jack, I’m stifling a yawn and starting to look at the cute guy in the booth behind us.” “Mr. Zimmermann, that is the sort of thing that would make some girls walk out.”

Jack’s frustrated. Shitty fixes him up with a girl named Samantha, and Jack finds that Eric’s admonishments were scarily accurate. They break down the date later. Eric assures him that he’s not a hopeless case, that he gave it a good honest try, and that’s more than a lot of guys will even give.

Next lesson with Eric. Technique. Literally, how to eat and drink. How to dance. Eric’s as small as some girls, so he gives Jack a dance lesson. Jack’s never enjoyed dancing before, but holding Eric by the waist and guiding him around the dance floor is fun. Fun, due in no small part to the sparkle in Eric’s eyes.

Shitty matches him up with a girl named Camilla. This one goes a lot better. They talk sports, which is great, and Jack pretty much succeeds at the whole technique thing. But the thing is, Jack’s not feeling it. It’s one thing to perform well, but it’s another to have it feel like a performance. He doesn’t have the same rapport with Camilla as he does with Eric. It doesnt feel right.

Shitty frowns at this. “Brah, can I ask you a question?” he says to Jack. “Are you into men?”

Jack shakes his head fiercely. “It has to be a woman,” he says. “It has to. I’m in the NHL.”

Shitty looks at him for a long moment, opens his mouth to speak, and then sighs. “All right,” he says. “You’re the client.”

Third lesson with Eric devolves into a conversation on expectations and feelings. “How will I know when it’s the right person?” Jack asks.

“Oh, honey. You’ll know,” Eric says. “She’ll be easy to talk to. You’ll want to spend more time with her. You won’t want the night to end.”

Jack doesn’t know about that, but he does know that he doesn’t want this lesson to end. Ever.

Jack returns to Shitty and tells him he needs a girl who’s easy to talk to. Shitty frowns and says, “Okay, all right. I don’t usually do this, but I’m gonna set you up with a close personal friend of mine. Larissa’s low-key, she’s smart, she’s interesting… she might be perfect for you. Sound good?”

She does sound good, and Jack’s actually finding he’s somewhat excited for this date. And Larissa is easy to talk to. Better yet, she’s easy to not talk to… the pauses in their conversation are not awkward. Jack definitely feels a connection with her. If there’s a hitch in this date, it’s that Larissa seems to talk about Shitty a little too much.

But when the end of the night comes, and they’re at Larissa’s door – Jack doesn’t want to kiss her. He wants her number, but he wants it so he can text her. Maybe hang out once in a while. But not date. Not kiss, not hold hands with.

Larissa frowns at him. “You’re thinking of someone else,” she says flatly.

And she’s absolutely right.

Jack makes an appointment for a lesson with Eric, and the minute they’re together again, Jack tells him. “I want you,” he says. “I want to date you. No one else.”

Eric’s hesitant, but his eyes are shining. “Oh, Jack, honey,” he says. “That’s not uncommon, for people to think they’ve fallen for their dating coach. It’s an illusion. Because we connected during lessons, it doesn’t mean we really–”

“We really,” Jack says. “I really.”

Eric stares, lost for words. Jack fills in the blanks. “I want to go on dates with you,” he says. “I want to hold hands with you, I want to dance just like we were dancing before. I want to talk to you all night long. I want to wake up next to you. You’re who I was thinking of when I was on those dates. I’m not making this up. It’s for real. You said I’d know…. and I know.”

And now there are tears in Eric’s eyes. “Are… are you sure?”

Jack nods emphatically.

“I– I told myself I was just imagining it,” Eric mumbles. “I told myself, now look here, Eric Richard Bittle, he’s just another client. Another one of the hot messes Shitty works with. Just because he’s doing well at the lessons doesn’t mean–”

Jack shuts him up with a kiss.

Afterward, as they hold each other, Jack says, “You know, Shitty’s a really good matchmaker.”

Eric laughs. “You think?”

“Absolutely.” Jack gives him a grin. “I fell for the very first person he recommended.”

title: five stages of grief

one) denial

When Bellamy wakes up the day After, he doesn’t cry, even though he feels the sadness resting at the hollow of his throat and stinging at his eyes. In his chest, his heart is breaking, and there’s a deep, near-bottomless emptiness, but there’s also hope. The kind that cuts, makes it hard to breathe. She could be out there, he thinks. She could be alive; he hopes, and it is torture. Because she isn’t. He has to accept that. Besides, he thinks bitterly, he has all the time in the world.

You do realize that Ashi is still a teenager and Jack is an old man, right?

Ok, I feel like it’s time to finally settle some of the discourse in the fandom over the Jashi ship

Ashi:

- Is an adult woman, probably around 20 years old

- Jack called her a “woman”, not “a girl”

-  She is mature beyond teenage years

- If she were a minor she definitely wouldn’t have gotten all the sexy/nude scenes she did last episode

- She can make her own decisions as an adult

- Jack helped her find her true self and gave her life a meaningful purpose besides simply being an expendable killing machine

- She obviously cares about Jack

Jack:

- Is technically 75 years old, (thousands of years old if you want to get more technical about it), but neither his physical age nor his psychological age represent a 75 year old

- He is still physically 25 years old, just with more emotional baggage (and as far as mental age goes, mind and body are not completely separate. His brain would still represent that of a 25 year old, still young and developing)

- By the logic of the “age gap” which puts Jack at 75 years old, who tf can he date acceptably then without a massive age gap since he’s an “old man”? Your grandma? That’s not fair to the character

- He was able to forgive Ashi and does seem to care about her

- It IS possible to ship Ashi with the 2001-2004 version of Jack, ya know

- We’ve had evidence that in the presence of Ashi, Jack’s hallucinations become far less aggressive (blue Jack in episode 3 vs in episode 4), or disappear entirely, so she’s positively affecting his mental health

- So much so that she is able to convince Jack out of committing suicide after 50 years of temptation

Shipping Jashi in General:

- It has become clear now that Ashi is an adult woman

- Jack and Ashi have obvious chemistry

- Both have risked their lives protecting each other

- They have saved each other’s lives

- They are a benefit to each other’s mental health

- There is no evidence that Jack is Ashi’s father

- There is no evidence of an abusive relationship (They were enemies in the beginning, and yes, Jack killed her sisters, but it was in self-defense, and Ashi understands that.)

- However you choose to see the age gap is arbitrary, not factual

- Compared to many other ships, like those shipping a young girl with a hundred-year-old vampire or whatever, or shipping Jack with a literal ancient demon, Aku, Jashi is a super unproblematic ship

Conclusion:

Jashi shippers have a very strong base for their ship that has proven to be mutually beneficial and pure. Whether it becomes canon or not, if you personally don’t like the ship for whatever reason, that’s fine, that’s your own opinion and you have a right to it. What you don’t have a right to is to attack the shippers, especially when there’s almost no reasonable argument against the Jashi ship.

Jungkook Scenario: Unexpectedly You.

Request: BadBoy Jungkook (Highschool AU) fluff of where he likes the reader (good girl) and he softens up for her? + Hello there,i dont know if this request will make it or not but if it does,i want to request a fluff College!au with jungkook or yoongi where y/n is a self taught pianist and jungkook or yoongi is a sport major saw y/n when she was performing for the university’s events

Genre: Fluff.

You knew you were nervous, your legs were shaking, your hands were shaking, in your head a thousand thoughts on how everything could go wrong as fast as wind, you knew how important this event was for you, not only because you would be exposing your talent and skill before the whole campus, or because in the crowd there could be a potencial sponsor, you were nervous because this could be the start of something new in your life, whatever that might be.
You had always believed that it was in occasions when people were most afraid to fail, when they were nervous, fearful or hopeful of the outcome of events when life decided to give a turn and then everything wasn’t the same anymore.

For this occasion you had chosen a pretty light but still elegant short dress in white, it had some lace applications that made it look romantic but chic, as for your hair you had let it down with soft curls that were near gone.
The piano had been set on the stage by a group on the music department that volunteered for the logistics of the performers this afternoon, you went there, watching the crowd turning to the stage when they saw someone was getting on it. The festival was outdoors, with a stage being in a central area surrounded by all the stand up commerce of productos made by the students.

The long piano was beautiful, they had polished it until it shone and it reflected your face. The music sheet was already there, but you didn’t need it as you knew this song by heart. You were still nervous, your heart beating faster and your breathing unsteady, but you gave a big inhalation and stretched your hands, focusing on the instrument, the thing you loved most. The piano and the music you could create with it.

Jungkook could say he liked the exhibition festivals, he enjoyed walking around without doing anything in particular watching anything and everything, he also enjoyed all the free things girls would serve him, not that he asked but he wasn’t refusing any either.
Jungkook knew of a certain girl that would give him the biggest ration of chicken wings for free, if he insinuated the slightness thing to her, she was pretty so Jungkook didn’t mind. He was walking only with his friend Taehyung, since Jimin and Hoseok had went who knows where, so they strolled around the perimeter, checking out the stands, if there was anything worth their while.
The sound of the microphone made Jungkook turn for a second, one of the hosts of the event, a communication major must likely, was making the announcement of the next performer.

-A self taught pianist?- Taehyung snorted making Jungkook laugh. -Put those chicken wings on hold, this will be good, and wow- Taehyung whistled when you walked to the piano. -Miss sunshine is fine, but would she blow our tympani?-

Jungkook snickered his eyes examining you. You were indeed pretty, but he had his doubts about that self taught skill. Either way he stopped completely waiting until you started your performance, watching as you stretched your fingers and prepared yourself. You must had long slender fingers, or so they say about pianists.

-Come on- Taehyung pressed getting impatient.

Jungkook nudged at him and shushed. -Shut up man, watch-

The performance started, a low tune at first but then all of the sudden it went faster, almost merrier, making Jungkook wide his eyes.

-Girl can play- Taehyung whispered nodding.

Jungkook nodded but his eyes remained on you, the way your hands moved across that piano, how you were so immersed on your art you had your eyes closed and didn’t notice all the audience staring at you, how you didn’t need to read the music sheet. The movements were grateful and vigorous, gentle but it translated into a strong performance. Jungkook hadn’t even caught your name right when the host announced it but he noted to find our later. Right now he was hypnotized.

Illegal (Part 2)- Park Jimin Racer!AU

Genre: Fluff/ Comedy/ Angst

Pairing: JiminxReader

Word count: 5.000k

Summary: During your staying in your grandmother’s house you meet Jimin and discover the night life that’s beyond the calm appearence of the town.

“Jimin! They are looking for- Oh.” The browned haired guy stopped talking as soon as he noticed the girl kissing his cheek. You must have had a sad expression on your face because he sent you an apologetic smile, and stayed by your side during the whole scene.

You should have known better than to get attached to people by now. You have experienced all this before, and you knew the pain that you had felt, so why risk it all again?

You still were standing still, in the exact same position, looking at them. Jimin, however, had backed away from the girl and was scratching his neck nervously.

“Hey” The boy whispered “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?” You answered. Your voice trembled a bit, much to yours distaste, but you kept a smile on your face anyways.

“Well” Jimin said, clearing his throat “Jungkook, you were saying?”

“Oh, yeah, some people said that they wanted to talk to you. About that stuff” The brown haired guy, whose name was Jungkook, said. The colours drained from Jimin´s face as soon as he finishes talking, and you couldn’t help but to wonder why.

The wind starts to blow stronger and some leaves started to get stuck on your hair. Jimin laughed at your sight and you blushed, looking down at the hem of your dress.

It was quiet among the four of you for a while, the only background noise being some people´s loud cheers and the sound of engines running. You had a thousand questions running through your head right now, about whom that girl was and why she had kissed him. It didn’t make any sense to you. You actually thought that maybe, just maybe, he liked you, but once again, you were wrong.

Jungkook started walking away from you, into the middle of the crowd and waved at Jimin, mentioning for him to follow him. Jimin sent you two a small smile before going after him, leaving you two alone behind.

It continued to be quiet for a while until she spoke up.

“I’m Peyton, by the way.” She smiled nicely at you.

“Y/N. It’s nice meeting you.” You smiled back.

“I know who you are, I have heard a lot about you.” You widen your eyes at her statement, but she didn’t seem to notice, as she continued speaking “He is very handsome, isn’t he?” She pointed at Jimin and you nodded shyly, agreeing with her. She had a sad tone to her voice, like she felt bad or had regretted something that had to do with him.

“He is” You finally answer, playing with your dress. You focus on Jimin for a while, on the way he was smiling at people, and how relaxed he looked in the middle of everyone. He seemed to be very popular around here, adored by all, and you couldn’t help but to think about what he had seen in you to want to get to know you better. There were a ton of interesting people in this town, with life story that could go behind your imagination, yet, he had chosen you, and you were confused by it.

“I still remember the first time he came up to me” She said. You could see that she really cared for him, from the way she talked to the way she looked at him.

You had this feeling that she didn’t knew about the way you felt towards Jimin to be talking about him like that, but again, neither did you.

“I-I got to go, it’s getting late and my grandma must be waiting for me at home.” You said while starting to walk away. You brushed your hair behind your ears and smiled at her, apologetically. Even though you wanted to wait for Jimin and Jungkook to say goodbye to them, you just couldn’t handle the fact of Peyton talking about him like that without feeling a pain in your chest.

“Can’t you just stay for a few more minutes? I love your company!” She pleaded, battling her eyelashes at you. You had to admit that she was a very pretty person, with blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes, no wonder that Jimin liked her.

“I’m sorry but I really have to go. But it was very nice talking to you!” You said and walked away.

It was starting to get a bit cold and you regretted coming out here without bringing a coat with you. You rubbed your hands up and down your arms in hopes of warming yourself up while you thought about what had happened.

The way Jimin talked to you and looked at you, allied to what the green haired boy had said, made you feel like he did, in  fact, cared about you, and if you even dared to say, liked you. However, there was this whole Peyton thing. She was a very sweet girl, and nice too, and from the little talk you had with her you could see that she really liked Jimin. And he seemed to be found of her too, by the way he had reacted to her kiss.

It was at time like this that you would like to have Taehyung around, to just talk this all out. It may not seem like this for other people due to the fact that he is a bit air headed, but he is great at listening and giving advices.

You thought about calling him because you knew that he would pick up – he always stayed up late looking for new animal species on Wikipedia- but it was already late, and you were very tired.

You tried to walk as fast as you could to your grandmother’s house since you hated walking alone, especially at night.

The whole town had so much more to it than you imagined, so much life. It was a beautiful sight now that you think about it, with the lights, the people and the adrenaline.

You knocked on your grandma’s door and prayed that she was still awake, otherwise, you would have to sleep on the little wooden bench that she had on her front porch.

“Y/N? Is that you darling?” A voice said from the living room as you opened the door. She was sitting on the couch in her purple nightgown, watching the late night shows on Food Network.

“Yeah, it’s me, grandma.” You answered.

“So?” She asked, excited “How was it, your date?”

She patted the spot next to her on the couch as if mentioning for you to sit down next to her. The look of tiredness in her eyes seemed to disappear the moment you sat, cross legged, besides her.

“First, it wasn’t a date. And second, everything went just fine.” You said, relaxing your back against the sofa. You didn’t know whether or not you should tell her about the race, since you were almost sure that that wasn’t something they wanted other people to know about. Even if it was your grandfather that had taught him that.

“Whatever you say” She threw her hands in the air as a sign of defeat. “But, did you two kissed?”

“What?! Grandma!” You covered your face in embarrassment.

“What? Did you or not?”

“No!”

“You two are no fun! The first time your grandfather invited me somewhere, he kissed me right on the first minute. I slapped him away, but at least he made a move!”

You lay your head on her shoulders as she patted you lovingly on your head. She runs her wrinkled fingers through your hair and you close your eyes, relaxing at her touch.

“If my dad calls, don’t tell him about Jimin and all of this, me going out and such” You plead “He might get a heart attack if he gets to know that.”

“Okay sweetie”

“Thanks. I don’t want him to get worried unnecessarily.”

The both of you stayed like that for a while, not moving a single muscle. It felt good being next to your grandmother. She and your dad were the only people you allowed yourself to get attached to. And Tae has well, of course.

After your mother left you, your grandma called every day to check up on you. She was there during the whole things, right next to you and your father in case of any of you fell down again. And you were grateful for that.

“It’s getting a bit late, don’t you think?” Your grandmother said pointing at the clock that she had on the living room’s wall.

“Yeah, I’m going to go to bed now. Night grandma” You responded, kissing her cheek.

You get off the sofa and walk up the stairs, towards your bedroom. Changing tor your pyjamas and after brushing your teeth tiredly, you hop inside your bed, adjusting yourself to the covers and your head to your pillow.

“Glad you remembered my existence” Taehyung said into the phone speaker. You were laying flat back on your bed, staring at the ceiling, bored out of your mind when you decided to call him.

“What? Don’t tell me you were missing me already?” You joked.

“Oh, you could tell?” He laughed. You hear the sound of a woman’s voice in the background indicating that he was at his house, probably for his little brother soccer match, otherwise he would be at his apartment playing some random video games. Or Overwatch. That boy was crazy for Overwatch.

“Anyways” You hear him say “How is everything around there? Found someone to replace me yet?”

“I could never replace you, otherwise I wouldn’t have someone to pester me all day”

“Glad to know that” He replied.

“But I’ve met some cool people that I think you would like to be friends with. One of them pestered me so much yesterday that it reminded me of you.” You laugh. It was starting to be a little bit dark inside your room so you decide to get up and open the curtains more.

“Really? You have to introduce that person to me so that we can form an Annoy-Y/N-Association. But really, what is he like?”

“Well, his name is Park Jimin and- “ You start saying but get interrupted right away.

“Wait a minute. “his name”? Is he a boy? What does your grandmother think about that?”

“She loves it, even a little bit too much. She had even asked me if we had kissed yet.” You say.

“Well, and did you?” He pressed. When were you going to learn to keep your mouth shut.

“No, we are just friends. Besides, I think he likes someone else, and that person likes him too.” You say, sitting against the headboard.

“Oh, I’m sorry” He said.

“Don´t be, you didn’t do anything.” You laughed “Now tell me, what have you been up to?”

“You know, the usual. Nothing new ever happens around here. Do you know when you are coming back?” He asked.

“I still don’t know, two months, maybe? I want to make up to my grandmother for all the times I couldn’t visit, you know?”

“Yeah I see” He says and you her some muffling voices in the background” Look, Y/N, I would love to talk to you more but I have to go, my brother is being a pain in my ass. Call me if you need anything, okay? And don’t hesitate!”

“Don’t worry, I will. Bye Tae” You smiled even though you knew that he couldn’t see you.

“Bye Y/N, take care” He says and then hangs up.

You turn your phone off and put it on your jean’s back pocket. You let yourself stand still on the bed for a bit longer than necessary, breathing slowly with your eyes closed, before deciding to get out of your bedroom.

Your grandmother was outside, gardening, wearing a big yellow hat and some gardening gloves. She was watering the roses and cutting some of them out, along with their thorns, so that she could put them in the living room. You sat on the bench that was on the front porch and crossed your legs. You used to sit outside all day back at your home with your mother before she left. She used to tell you some of the small adventures she had lived and about the countries she had visited. Some other times she would invite you to go and help her around in the garden, which always resulted in the two of you getting wet by the hose.

“Oh, you are out here already?” Your grandmother asked, cleaning the sweat of her forehead with her hands.

“Yeah, Taehyung had to end the call so… Do you need any help?” You offer.

“No, no, it’s okay. I can do it.” She said. “But darling could you do me a tiny favour?”

“Yeah”

“Could you go to the kitchen and bring me a glass of water?” You nodded in response. Your grandma starts to hum a song to herself as you got up and walked inside.

It’s around four in the afternoon and the sun is up high. There are a lot of people outside, walking around, and stooping here and there to great her, and some of them actually asked if she needed any help, which she always declined.

You open the fridge and take out a bottle of cold water. Opening one of the cupboards, you take out one glass and fill it up.

By the time you get outside you notice someone talking to your grandma.

“There she is” She says, pointing at you. The minute she steps away from the person, you come face to face with someone very familiar. Park Jimin.

“Hey, I was just asking her about you.” He smiled “I wanted to ask you if you wanted to come and hang out with us.”

“Us?” you asked, confused.

“Yeah, me, Jungkook, Yoongi, Peyton and some others.”

“Oh,” You felt divided. On one hand you wanted to go and hang out with them since it seemed fun and they were very nice people to be around. On the other hand, there was this whole Jimin thing that you were trying to figure out. “I don’t know. My grandma needs me here and-“

“Nonsense” She interrupted. You didn’t even realize she was standing right behind you. “Y/N, you should go, have fun. Don’t worry about me, I‘ll be fine”

She shushed you out of her house with her gardening gloves and next to Jimin, and you couldn’t help but to laugh at her actions. You tried to argue as she did so, but it didn’t work out. Jimin didn’t say anything during the whole scene, as he just stayed back and watched with a big grin on his face.

“Don’t forget to call if you need anything!” She yelled when you and Jimin started to walk away.

“You left me quite worried last night ” He said after a while.

“Why?” You furred your eyebrows in confusion.

“When I went back, I didn’t see you anywhere. I asked Peyton about you and she said that you had already left”

“Oh, that. It was getting late and I got to go to my grandmother’s. And I didn’t tell you anything because I didn’t want to bother you. Besides, I’m a big girl, you know?” You joked.

Unexpectedly, Jimin stopped as grasped your arm with his hand, pulling you back and making you collide with his chest. He slid his hand under your chin and you blushed at the contact. Embarrassed by your reaction, you tear your eyes away from him and focus on the ground.

“Hey” he said, tilting your chin up so that you were looking at his eyes. “Look at me. You would never in a million years, be a burden to me. I care about you, okay? And the idea of you walking around, alone at night, it just… If anything had happened to you I could never forgive myself.”

Your heart started to beat hard against your ribcage and your face became really hot. You have never blushed this hard in your entire life.

“Do you understand?” He asked, his eyes going back and forth between yours. You simply nodded in response, not trusting your voice. “Good”

He stepped away from you and kept walking as if nothing had happened- You, however, stayed still since you were a bit taken aback by his actions, so it took you a while to catch up with him.

“So,” He stated “Did you choose a favourite colour already?”

“I have thought about it” You say.

“You have?” Jimin asked, surprised, and you hummed in response. “So, have you decided on one yet?”

“No” You simply answered, shrugging.

“What do you mean with “no”?” He stopped in front, with his arms stretched out and eyes wide open. The people that were walking pass the two of you were giving Jimin some funny looks, but he stayed still, not bothered by it.

“There are a lot of colours in the world, how do you want me to choose just one? Especially this quick?” You answer, dodging his arms and continuing to walk straight ahead on the sidewalk.

“So, that means that you are still thinking about it?” He ran after you with a hopeful look in his eyes.

His orange hair seemed brighter than the usual under the sunlight and his skin looked more tanned, more beautiful. However there was this thing that he always had and that never changed, his smile.

“Yup.”

“Thank God” He sighed, dramatically, with his hand on his chest.

He took out a pair of round sunglasses and put them on his face. Jimin started to walk closer to you, to the point where he put his arm around your shoulder, making a hint of colour to start taking place on your cheeks.

“Let’s try this again, and I hope that you have an answer to this one. So, Y/N, tell me, do you have a favourite animal?” He said, stretching his arms behind his head and ruffling his hair.

“As a matter of fact, I do.” You stated and stuck your tongue out at him.

“Then tell me woman, you are killing me here.” He said, excited.

“Ducks”

“What?” He asked.

“Ducks are my favourite animals” You repeat.

“See this is what I am talking about. I’m trying to like you, I really am. But you are making that impossible to me.” He groaned.

“What do you mean?” You ask, confused. You had no idea about what you had done wrong. He asked you a question and you simply answered it.

“You like ducks. How can you like ducks?”

“So, let me get this straight. You can’t fully like me because my favourite animals are ducks?” You laughed. He certainly was something else.

“Yeah. Ducks are evil creatures with tiny wings.” He exaggerated.

“No they are not! How can you say that? First of all, they are very cute and adorable. And secondly, you have the same hair colour as their beak, how can you even hate them?”

“Well, for starts, they obviously copied me on that whole hair colour thing. And second, they are not cute, they are tiny deadly weapons!” He said gesticulating everywhere.

“Deadly?” You laughed at his words. “Give me an example, then.”

“Well… I hum… I got attacked by one of them one day.” He said and looked away, embarrassed.

“You what?”

“Don’t make say that again.” He covered his red face in and you couldn’t help but to chuckle at his reaction.

“What did you do for the duck to attack you?”

“That’s the thing, I didn’t do anything!” He said, obviously frustrated “It must have been like “Oh, there is Park Jimin, how about I just peck the soul out of him?”

You couldn’t control yourself anymore. You just started laughing out loud, not caring if anyone would think you were crazy or not. Some tears started to prick free from your eyes and your stomach began to ache. Jimin did, however, start to laugh too, much to your surprise.

You didn’t even know what you two might seem at the moment, but honestly you didn’t care. And neither did he.

“This is it” He announced pointing at the café.

There was a group of people sat outside in some chairs and tiny sofas speaking loudly. There was a metal table in the middle of them and an umbrella shielding them from the sun. The café had a relaxed felling to it with the wooden door and the big windows that decorated its walls.

“Guys, this is Y/N” He said and you smiled at them. You knew some of them, such as Jungkook, the green haired boy and Peyton, but the other faces were unfamiliar to you. She smiled at you and mentioned for you to seat between her and another girl that had pink hair, on the small sofa. Jimin, however, sat on one of the chairs, right in front of you.

“Can you believe her favourite animals are ducks?” He said and you scratched your arm in embarrassment.

“Wait. Did you tell her about “the duck incident”?” Jungkook asked in between laughs. The rest of them started laughing too, as if they were all remembering it. “You should have seen his face, he looked like he had just shit himself! And his scream! He looked like a little girl!”

“Yeah, yeah. Very funny.”Jimin said rolling his eyes. “You can laugh all you want, but it wasn’t you who was being pecked to death.” Jimin responded.

After a while they all got back to chatting. You were expecting to be uncomfortable, since you barely knew anyone besides Jimin, but they were so carefree and friendly to be around that you started to actually enjoy hanging out with them.

“Guys,” A guy interrupted, getting up from his spot. He waved all around to try and catch everybody’s attention while taking his wallet from his back pocket. “I’m going to buy a pack of cigarettes, anyone want one?”

Everyone shook their heads no except for Jimin who was looking at you with a blank expression. His face was unreadable, and you thought that he was probably thinking about what you had said to him the last time he smoked around you.

What about you Jimin, want one?“

“No, thanks Jin. I’m good” He said and smiled, still not tearing his eyes away from yours.

Everybody’s face had the same expression on it. Shock. Like it was the first time he had ever declined a pack of cigarettes. The green haired boy, however, was smiling proudly at him.

“What?” Jimin asked, confused, while looking at their reactions.

“Nothing. It’s just it’s the first time I have ever seen you saying no to a pack of cigarettes. I’m just… shocked, I guess.” Jungkook said, shaking his head.

“What made you change your mind so quickly?” Jin asked. He still hasn’t moved since Jimin said no to him, which had shocked and made him curious at the same time, as well as everyone else.

“Did you know that each cigarette takes away eleven minutes of your life ?” He says, quoting you. “And that’s eleven minutes less that I get to spend with the people I care about.”

He winked at you and you stared at the ground, blushing hard. However, nobody seemed to notice that as they were all looking at them with their eyes wide open. You really wanted to believe in his words, that he cared about you, but you couldn’t seem to fully do that, especially when Peyton was sitting next to you, and you knew he had some kind of feelings for her. Or so it seemed like.

“I’m proud of you man” Jungkook said while patting him on his back.

“Well if you put it that way…” Jin responded, sitting down “I guess there is no pack of cigarettes for me either”

You bitt your bottom lip trying to hold in a smile. You felt proud of him and of everyone else too.

“Hey, what do you say about we play some darts?” The pink haired girl said.

“Sounds good to me” Jungkook answered, getting up.

“Are you kidding me? I just sat down” Jin growled.

Everyone got up and walked inside. The interior of the cafe was the complete opposite that you were expecting. It was big, full of light and of colour as well. There was a counter filled with drinks, glasses and machines on the right side and the rest of the place was filled with little wooden tables and couches. On a little area there was only two sets of darts, which meant that some of you had to wait for their turn.

“Jeon Jungkook, come on then. I’m going to beat your ass” Jimin said while taking his jacket and handing it over to you.

“Ha ha, you are really funny, did you know that?” He said as they walked away in the direction of the first one.

“Y/N, do you mind if I play with her first?” Peyton asked.

“No, go ahead. I will sit for a while.” You smiled at her and sat on the sofa, next to the boy with the green hair.

“Yoongi, my man, I’m going to the bathroom so-”

“That’s some unnecessary information, don’t you think?” He laughed and joined you on the couch.

You two sat back watching the others play in silence until Yoongi spoke up.

“Y/N, do you like Jimin?” He suddenly asked, out of nowhere.

“I what?”

“I asked you if you liked Jimin.” He simply stated.

“Why are you asking me that?” You questioned him. If you didn’t know how to respond to that question to yourself how the heck were you going to answer that to him?

“I have seen the way he looks at you and you looked at him. And there is this whole cigarette thing that left us all a bit taken a back. The others might not have noticed but I saw him looking at you the whole time we were together outside” He ruffled his green hair, still focused on the people who were playing.

“I… I don’t know.” You said. “Maybe.” Normally you would feel very nervous when you were talking about this to someone but Yoongi was such a relaxed person that you got more relaxed yourself. “It doesn’t matter anyways. I know he likes Peyton”

“What do you mean?”

“On the other night, Peyton kissed his cheek at he stepped back, blushing.”

“Do you have a first love Y/N?” He asked.

“Yeah, why?”

“If that person came up to you and kissed your cheek wouldn’t that make you blush? However that wouldn’t make your feelings for Jimin go away, would it?” You played with the hem of your shirt as he talked. You were listening to every word carefully and absorbing each one.

“You are right.”

“Peyton was Jimin’s first love. He liked her a lot but she never really cared about him. But recently, she started noticing him more but he doesn’t reciprocate those feelings for her anymore.”

Oh.

“But, could you make me a favour?” He asked.

“Yeah, I think so.” You took a bit longer to process what he had just said. Was he saying the truth? Did Jimin not have feelings for Peyton? And more importantly, did you actually liked Jimin? It was a whole lot of new information to process.

“Be careful, please. With yourself and with him.” He said and you nodded your head.

“So, what did I miss?” Jin interrupted, sitting next to Yoongi.

“Nothing” He responded. “Surprisingly, Jimin is winning”

You blocked their voices out of your head and focused only on Jimin. He was laughing at something that Jungkook had done, his eyes all wrinkled and his teeth showing. His orange hair was pushed off his forehead with his sunglasses and his arm muscles were showing. He noticed you staring at him and smiled at you, followed by a wink and launch of one arrow.

“That´s not fare!” Jungkook whined while Jimin did his victory dance.

The door suddenly opened which made you cover your eyes with your hands from all the light that was getting in. A group of people came in and closed the door loudly and aggressively behind them. They had an angry expression on their faces, like they were ready to beat someone up.

“Where the hell is Park Jimin?!” One of them yelled.

Oh boy.

Best Friends?

warnings: cursing, fluff, kissing

word count: 1,539

“(Y/N)!” Peter waved his hands rapidly in front of you, “Mrs. Morris is going to flip out on you, you’ve already been caught twice today,” he shook his head at your actions.

You shook your head, laughing at yourself. “Damn it, i just can’t focus today, sorry petey!” You tried to focus on the board, giggling at your actions

You tended to zone out, or rather, truthfully, stare at your best friend, trying to figure out how to tell if he’s interested in you. Peter had been your closest companion just since forever. Forever meaning too long ago to remember exactly when.

Your ogling at Peter still continued through the class, but to your luck, you didn’t get caught.. again.

Mrs. Morris continued spewing on and on about the subject that you had completely let escape your mind,

As the bell rang, Peter stood from your table, pushing in his chair.

“(Y/N), what the hell is up with you today? are you okay, did something happen? you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, i’m just worried,” His face filled with more and more concern with each word, “You never zone out in Morris’ class. Like ever,” he said.

You laughed shaking your head. “I really appreciate your concern, Peter, but i’m okay, I promise!” he raised his eyebrow in response, giving you that “Really?” look.

“Peter, I. am. perfectly. fine!” you said.

The smile that broke out upon his face made you want to kiss him in that very moment. He was the more considerate, adorable boy you’ve ever laid your eyes upon.

Your heart raced in your chest as the two of you discussed your plans for tonight, your daily movie night. It was usually spent on either his or your couch, watching the worst possible movies you guys could think of, just for the good shits and giggles of it all . Though, The Star Wars original trilogy was brought out every so often though, just because it was peters ultimate favorite, as well as yours.

“So my place tonight?” he asked, leaning forward towards you. “May won’t be home, out of town or something. You can spend the night if you want, i’ll take the couch.”

You nodded, grinning at him. “Sure, but i’ll take the couch Pete, it’s your place! i’ll be over at six, im bringin’ the popcorn, extra butter just how you like it!”

“God, extra butter? for me? You’re the best person in the whole damn world, (Y/N)” Peter said, mock excitement etched in his words.

You laughed, then kissed him on the cheek. “Just for you, Petey!”

His eyes widen, and you suddenly begin to realize what you did. You did that. You kissed Peter, fucking, Parker. On the cheek. For no reason.

You walked away, well more like ran, but you managed to take a glance at peter. He had the biggest shit-eating grin you’ve ever seen and his hand was placed on the exact spot where you had kissed him. He looked like the happiest man, but confused man alive.

You finally reached your home after a short walk, and began to search throughout your pantry for the extra buttery popcorn you purchased just for tonight.

The thoughts of the incident went through your head at a million miles a minute. We’re you supposed to act like nothing happened? He obviously looked happy about so, does he like you back??

Sitting the bag on the counter, you reach for your phone to text Peter, but are surprised at the fact he had already texted you.

“hey, (Y/N). you’re still coming over right? i thought we could bring out star wars tonight! :)”

You typed out your response, smiling at his text. He always brought a smile to your face.

“yep! admit it, you just want me for my popcorn.”

“Haha, no. I just want my best friend to come watch movies with me, but.. the popcorn is a bonus too.”

Laying the phone down on the counter, you made your way to your room to change into something much more comfortable than your current clothing as you were wearing jeans, which were the most uncomfortable pants ever compared to your pajama pants.

Before leaving, you sent your mom a text saying you were sleeping over at your friend Amelia’s house tonight. Your mom responded quickly with an okay

You left the house, making your way, walking fast in full on pajamas, and began your short walk to Peter’s.

The kiss was still on your mind with each and every step. Would he mention it? How would you respond if he did? Were you worrying for no reason? The more you thought about it, the more apprehensive you became, so you attempted to distract yourself as you walked

Reaching peters apartment, you knocked three times, followed shortly by Peter opening the door.

If it were anyone else, you would have felt very uncomfortable showing up in your pajamas at six in the evening, but it’s Peter, and he’s in his pajamas anyways.

“I’m afraid i can’t let you in.” He smirked, “Atleast not until you show me you brought the popcorn.”

You raised up the bag up and he dramatically sighed, allowing you to come in.

The two of you plopped down on the couch, and Peter began “A New Hope.” The Main Title began to play, and you didn’t appear to notice that Peter wasn’t paying to the movie at all, his eyes glued to you as you read the words on the screen with such excitement. Even if you’ve seen this movie dozens of times, you always looked beyond happy watching it.

Finally, halfway through the movie peter turned to you.

He nervously looked down, fumbling with hands, “Can I tell you something, (Y/N)?” He glanced up at you, “Something really, really important?”

A thousand thoughts flew through your head. Seeing Peter worried, or nervous made you worried or nervous. “Yes.” Your words were softly spoken.

He shook his head, a faint appearance of a grin on his face. “There’s this girl. This amazing, wonderful, smart, beautiful, hilarious, girl. I could go on and on about her,” He laughed looking down again.

You wanted to cry, you wanted to just curl over in a ball and and sob your heart out. But that wasn’t an option, not now. Peter was your friend, your closest friend, and you can’t force him to like you. Especially since he obviously adored this girl. This girl he hasn’t told you about. So, you tried your best to put on a believable face of happiness.

Peter continued his thoughts after you spoke. “I’ve been trying to talk to her, which i do on a daily basis so i don’t know why i’m acting like it’s so damn hard. I just want to tell her how i feel. But I can’t put into words how she makes me feel.” His eyes met yours, his gaze filled with love. “It’s you, (Y/N).”

“Peter,” You spoke, about to confess that you felt exactly the same, but he cut you off.

“I know, I know. We’re friends, but damn ever since you kissed my cheek today, i couldn’t get my mind off that one day possibly becoming a normal thing. I want to be with you, so much. I’ve tried to tell you so many times, but i couldn’t. I rather have you in my life as a friend over not having you at all, so i’m putting this all on the line telling you this, (Y/N). He returned his gaze to the ground, unable to make eye contact with you.

You grabbed his face, making him look up at you. Making his beautiful, brown eyes meet yours.

“Peter Parker, luckily,” You stroked his cheek gently as you leaned in closer. “I’m hopelessly in love with you.”

In that moment, you felt the most overpowering feeling of what you assumed to be love. You never wanted forget how this felt, this overwhelming feeling of adoration for this boy, your best friend. You wanted to feel like this for the rest of your life, forever. As The wave of affection consumed you, and you slowly leaned in.

You were nervous, and so was peter. The both of you were over the moon in joy that the feelings you felt were reciprocated.

Your lips met, and it felt so goddamn right. He leaned his head to left, and his hands met at your waist, pulling you closer to him, making it nearly impossible to get any closer to him. Your hands ran through his brown hair, the kiss being so full of passion, you felt as if you could do this forever. He deepened the kiss, making it feel like this was a just one giant fairytale kiss. You couldn’t describe exactly how wonderful and ethereal it all felt.

You guys’ began to realize that you needed to pull away, but Peters forehead remained against your own as you slowly opened your eyes.

While Panting, Peter began to speak. “Well in fact, I’m hopelessly in love with you, (Y/N).” He smirked, and you leaned in again.

“Whatever bug boy.”

A painter working on cel from Pinocchio, c. 1939.

The photo source comes with an amazing article worth reading about the female inkers and painters that worked at Disney, and it was written by the niece of inker Reidun “Rae” Medby. Read here [x].

“Preparing the animators’ vision for camera required the inking and painting of thousands of fragile, combustible cels with perfect refinement. During Snow White, it was not at all unusual to see the ‘girls’—as Walt paternalistically referred to them—thin and exhausted, collapsed on the lawn, in the ladies’ lounge, or even under their desks. ‘I’ll be so thankful when Snow White is finished and I can live like a human once again,’ [inker Reidun “Rae” Medby] wrote after she recorded 85 hours in a week. ‘We would work like little slaves and everybody would go to sleep wherever they were,’ said inker Jeanne Lee Keil, one of two left-handers in the department who had to learn everything backward. ‘I saw the moon rise, sun rise, moon rise, sun rise.’ Painter Grace Godino, who would go on to become Rita Hayworth’s studio double, also remembered the long days merging into nights: ‘When I’d take my clothes off, I’d be in the closet, and I couldn’t figure it out: am I going to sleep or am I getting up?’”
