Not a writing question but I was wondering what your opinions on the organization Autism Speaks were.

Ah, thank you for offering us an opportunity to share something very important to us. For those who aren’t aware, there is an organization in the US called “Autism Speaks” which claims to be a charity working to help autistic people. They are not a charity. They are a hate group.

Autism Speaks is not run with the help of any autistic people. It’s run by allistic people who think of autism as a horrible disease that needs to be eradicated. They run propaganda ads talking about autism like a plague which is destroying lives. They compare it to cancer. One of their propaganda videos famously shows a member of their board talking about contemplating killing her autistic child - while the child is in the room listening to her. Their goal is to “cure” autism - to wipe it off the face of the planet. They don’t see autistic people as people, but as tragic burdens to those around them. They want to take care of all the poor moms and dads whose lives were so tragically ruined when they found out their child was autistic. And they support organizations that torture autistic people and call it “therapy”, like the Judge Rotenberg Center.

This is not a charity. They think of us as broken, inhuman monsters who should be expunged from society. They are not helping us - they’re trying to exterminate us.

Their propaganda is a big part of why there is so much misinformation out there about autism and autistic people. The average person is likely to believe their claims that autism is a horrible disease, that the best way to help the people who have it is to cure them and make them “normal”. Especially the parents of autistic children might like the idea of “fixing” their kid.

News flash: We’re not sick. Autism is not a disease. At worst, it can be considered a disorder or disability, depending on your definition of such, but the vast majority of autistic people are perfectly happy being who we are. Our biggest hurdle isn’t some terrible defect in ourselves - it’s the negative attitudes and lack of understanding in those around us, and the expectation that our primary goal in life should be to act less like ourselves and more like the “normal” people who make up the majority (pro tip: there’s really no such thing as normal). Autism cannot be cured, because it’s not an illness. Our brains are hardwired differently than others, and that is a fundamental part of who we are. If you asked me if I would like a cure, I would look at you the same way as if you asked me if I would like to remove the color from my pizza, because it makes the same amount of logical sense.

Imagine if someone asked you if you would like to stop being (insert your nationality here). Like, just completely remove it from yourself. What would that even mean? Removing all your memories and experiences from that country? Erasing your native language and replacing it with another one? How would that even work? That’s the kind of thing that’s being proposed here.

What autistic people need is awareness, education, and sometimes assistance, depending on our individual needs. We dream of a world where seeing a person rocking back and forth gently and not making much eye contact isn’t met with indignation, disgust, or pity, and where our strengths are valued (and we have many!).

It should be noted that recently, Autism Speaks has changed their official platform slightly, supposedly focusing less on a “cure”, but I’m afraid I don’t buy it for a second. Anyone whose goal includes a “cure” at all is not advocating for our rights, and even if they did have a different mission now, the damage is long since done. Many of us may struggle, and many of us may wish there were certain problems we could do away with, but a “cure” is not possible and our goal should not be to eliminate autistic people from the world, especially given how much we contribute to society. Very few autistic people would actually desire a “cure”, even if one were possible.

So what does this have to do with writing? If you’re writing an autistic character who gets help from a charitable organization, do NOT make it Autism Speaks. That’s not what they do. If your character has any interactions with Autism Speaks, it will be more along the lines of being told they are broken and must be fixed, having the people in their lives treat them as less than human (or as deformed or defective) because they have believed the propaganda, being told they have no right to speak for themselves, and possibly suffering abuse and even torture at the hands of those who think they are “helping”.

There are plenty of good charitable organizations to help autistic people with what we actually need. If you want your character to support an organization in your story (or support the organization yourself by giving them positive exposure in your story), try one of these (and a little Google-fu can help you find a local one for you if you don’t live in the US or UK - search terms like “autism advocacy” and make sure it’s run by actual autistic people). We strongly recommend contacting them, letting them know what you’re writing, and asking how you can include them in your story and represent their work accurately:

Another revamp of an older comic!
Not trying to argue whether or not its ethical to use a Powersave (personally I don’t see a huge issue) but a lot of people simply don’t understand what it is and isn’t capable of and its bothersome that so much misinformation spreads

I am so sick of the us v.s. them argument and identity politics I want to be able to talk to a trump supporter or a conservative and explain to them why I feel the way i do and listen to why they feel the way they do so we can communicate and find out why there’s so much hatred and misinformation but we cannot do that because the second you listen to someone from the other side you are a traitor and none of that makes sense I just want things to get better.

so i tried not posting this but there’s sooo much misinformation on losing weight that pretty much borders on disordered eating n honestly you do not need to be so strict with yourself. yes, all the posts that say to lose weight most of it is done in the kitchen are correct. but fuck all those people that are like carbs are evil, fruit will make you gain weight, etc etc. so i’m gonna fix a few misconceptions about healthy living w/ diet and exercise here.

1. your weight is not a good indicator of how healthy you are. say you’re 200 now, right? and you start going to the gym and blah blah gain some muscle and see you’ve slimmed now in certain areas. but you step on the scale and it says 210. muscle weighs more than fat and it’s much better to go based on how you want your body to LOOK and FEEL than a number.

2. don’t do any x diet. and don’t listen to those people that are like you should be eating under like 1500cals a day!! bc they don’t know shit and that’s super unhealthy unless you’re like a 4'9 female. your diet should be mostly whole foods. don’t make it about calories make it about HEALTH. whole grains, more fruit, more veggies, lean meats, etc. eating dessert 5 times a month or having a carbonated drink here and there will not kill you. but drinking juices, pop, etc is a way to gain weight just due to the amount of calories and no nutritional value that are in them. learn how to read a nutritional label. once you start eating more healthfully, you’ll notice how you don’t have cravings anymore bc you’re fuelling your body correctly.

3. eating less will also stunt your gains. you say you’re eating 2 meals a day and not losing? its bc your metabolism is stunted and keeping onto everything you give it. 3 meals a day and 3 snacks is what’s recommended by HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. just make them healthy, typically i eat bananas, apples, clementines, a bagel w nut butter, or bowl of cereal as a snack.

4. when you work out, find something that you like. if you fucking hate running then don’t run. find something else. there’s plenty of ways to exercise and not hate what you’re doing. find something you enjoy. 3 days of cardio is good though if you want to lose (and it’s just good for your heart, too). no motivation to work out solo? join a club.

5. sleep! prioritize getting at least 6 hours of sleep. you’ll feel so much better and it’s super important in exercise recovery.

6. speaking of, recovery days are IMPORTANT! so, so important. your ankle being kind of finicky and you don’t feel 100%? then don’t go for a run. listen to your body.

My heart is breaking for all the victims of Finsbury Park, and for Nabra Hussein here in the US who was found brutally murdered in Virginia yesterday.

My heart goes out to the Muslim communities in the UK and the US who are struggling to make sense of senseless violence and who are facing backlash for world events they had nothing to do with.

My heart remains heavy as I know there will be much misinformation circulated so I ask all of my non-Muslim followers to read carefully, and to truly take a look at how the news about these attacks is presented. There is a huge discrepancy over when a white person commits atrocities than when someone of color does it.

Let’s all work to have sympathy, love, and understanding during these tough times. Sending much love to everyone - I’m thinking of you.

Dream Daddy is very sweet and please don’t let the tumblr discourse bs chase you away.

Obviously if you’re worried you can look into what other people have said, but there is so much blatant misinformation going on right now that it’s ridiculous. If you’re really worried but still curious you can of course look up a playthrough to check for yourself whether you think it’s worth your support, but please don’t think the discourse in the tags is representative of the game itself.

And also please don’t listen to the asshats saying people should just steal the game, to punish the devs, that’s so shitty I can’t even comprehend how people think like that.

If u buy ur cham from a pet store they likely have NO CLUE WHAT THEY”RE ON ABOUT!!!! I’ve learned that these people are VERY misinformed on cham care (Possibly on other reptile/amphibian care too but I’m not sure). PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH!! Don’t just take their word for it!! Research what ur particular cham species’ habitat is like: Temperatures, precipitation, humidity, day length, sunshine exposure….

I’ve been a victim of this misinformation. I’ve been so scared and confused about why he’s been unable to shed properly, and I’m starting to realise that his setup isn’t ideal, thanks to the shitty ‘’expertise’’ from the Cambridge Reptile Center. Luckily my Caspar has been alright for the past 2 years apart from this shedding issue, but other chams may not be as lucky.

I cannot stress this enough!!!! Chameleons are not a simple animal to care for.

DO !!! YOUR !!! RESEARCH !!!!

Caspar is going to be okay. He’s getting a brand new setup over the next few weeks which will be a lot better for him, and I’m going to make sure he’s as happy, healthy, and comfortable as possible. I love him so much and I’m just furious at the Reptile Center for their misinformation, and angry at myself for trusting them. But I’m gonna make things right. I love my lizard so much and I’m gonna make things right for him.

Sorry about the rant but I just needed to let that out. Do your research guys.

Hey there, how are you today? I'd like to ask you a few questions about what you think "happened to sigils on this site." What, in your opinion, happened to sigils on Tumblr? You make this seem like a negative thing - why is that to you? Why does this influence how someone should do their research (as in, not on Tumblr)? I am genuine curious as to your thoughts, not trying to argue or get mad, and would like to potentially start a discussion on this, if you're interested.

Hello @magic-for-the-masses, so before I begin this post I want to be clear that, I am talking about sigils in the Spare and chaos magick context (not as the Golden Dawn or other groups have used sigils, which was more like seals of spirits), many people that use sigils on tumblr use them more or less like a charm or talisman.  What I mean by that is many people on here create a “sigil” and then charging it with an intent, (which is fine), it’s just a charm or a talisman, it is not a sigil and there is a very specific reason why it is not a sigil.
Sigils are made in a variety of ways yes, the creation process varies from person to person, but sigils are always introduced into the sub-conscious mind.  Spare’s idea, was that a sigil, is a monogram of thought and must be planted into the unconscious mind, whether that be from using his death posture, sex/masturbation, meditation, entheogens is up to the person.
Many people don’t believe me when I say this so I am going to put some quotes from famous chaos magick authors and Spare himself explain the mechanisms behind sigils.

“Sigils work because they stimulate the will to work subconsciously, bypassing the mind.  There are three parts to the operation of a sigil. The sigil is constructed, the sigil is lost to the mind, the sigil is charged. In constructing a sigil, the aim is to produce a glyph of desire”, (Liber Null, Peter J Caroll)

“Sigils are images that unconsciously represent your desire. The aim of sigilization is to create an image (usually a symbol of some type) that represents your magical intention. The image is made in such a way that your conscious mind will not make an immediate connection between it and the object of your desire.  Sigils work by exploiting a fundamental difference in the way the conscious and subconscious minds operate. They operate at a point halfway between the conscious and subconscious levels.”  (Basic Sigil Magic, Phillip Cooper)

“Sigils are monograms of thought, for the government of energy (all hereditary crests, monograms, etc., are Sigils and represent the Karmas they govern), relating to Karma; a mathematical means of symbolising desire and giving it form that has the virtue of preventing any thought and association with that particular desire (at the magical time). The desire is thus protected from detection by the Ego, which cannot then restrain or attach the desire to its own transitory images, memories and worries, but allows it free passage to the unconscious.” (the book of pleasure, Austin Osman Spare)

This is why I say if you are just starting out on your journey in the craft tumblr is not a good place to learn from as there is so much misinformation on techniques and history of many different schools and systems of the craft, ESPECIALLY FOR CHAOS MAGICK. And I am not saying this as a angry chaote, as I do not consider myself a chaote, I am saying it as a person who loves to do research on different areas of magick.

As Always

hey this is a shoutout to all cis people who follow my blog bc they’re interested in the trans experience. thanks for educating yourselves and listening and asking questions when you have them. it really means a lot because there is so much misinformation going around from other cis people making assumptions about us. i know some of what i say can sound aggressive sometimes because i get so angry at being treated like a subhuman by so much of society, but thanks for listening and understanding anyways. i appreciate all of you a lot.

Sometimes I get in a really bad head-space over the anti-zoo movement. There is so much misinformation out there, and it also starts to feel like a personal attack on my career. I want so badly to educate people on how zoos do so much good, but when it comes to intense anti-zoo stuff, it's too emotionally overwhelming for me. But I can't let it go either, and I let it eat at me for hours after. Does that ever happen to you, or keepers you know? Do you have any advice?

Alright, there’s a lot to unpack here, but hopefully I can make you and others with similar feelings and struggles feel better.

My number one piece of advice is: it is completely okay to just walk away - from an anti zoo statement, person, etc. When it comes down to the heart of it, we are hardworking underpaid people in a physically and emotionally exhausting career. We do good work every single day. You do not have to single-handedly fight back every yahoo posting “should they really be in cages” or “#EmptyTheTanks” - we would all burn out completely. Defending our field is a team sport. There are many people, including lots of users on tumblr that I interact with, who have the emotional ability and are willing to do the labor to defend zoos/aquariums/etc. under certain circumstances. In my personal life I try to step up when I can to do the same. This is a shared battle. Sometimes you might feel you can have a productive conversation and actually help, sometimes you might be too tired and have to tap out. That is okay. We all have to take care of ourselves first sometimes. It is a real anti-activism tactic to try and flood people with so much to fight against that they burn out and give up. Pick your battles and put yourself first. Because when you DO feel up to it and you are defending zoos to the best of your ability, that will be a much more productive conversation.

The second piece of advice / insight is one that took me years to fully grasp and is still something I have to remind myself of. Most anti-zoo people are vastly misinformed, but will not be convinced by facts that try to inform them. The first half of this statement makes me feel better in a way, because I realize these vehement anti-zoo activists are objecting to things that aren’t even real. Examples are: we take every single one of our animals from the wild (as adults, so they remember the wild and they miss it), we physically torture our animals to force them to do ‘tricks’, we harm or mutilate them for our gain, all of our animals are “sad” and don’t receive any enrichment or stimulus… etc. None of these are true, but I’ve met people who believe every one of those things are 100% real. So when I hear their objections and try to talk to them, I realize hey, my work is actually pretty valid and my animals are living fulfilling lives - they aren’t going through any of these extreme tortures that this person is objecting to in the first place. The second half is disheartening, but becoming more common in all fields of activism (and is a whole different conversation anyways.) Basically, you can link to every article about conservation, show them dozens of species saved by zoos, show them the biggest no-bars-here sprawling zoo exhibit you can think of… and a lot of people will still be more convinced by a single edited photo of a “sad” polar bear lying at the edge of a concrete pool. There’s only so much you can do in that case.

Both of these things add up to: this isn’t a personal attack, because these attacks are based in misinformation and emotion, not any valid critiques of our jobs as zookeepers.

(Hopefully my silly gifs served to make someone smile and not make this seem less valid…okay I’m done…)

i kind of wanna write a sugar daddy au primer because y'all….i am a sugar baby, and the general public just has no concept of how it actually works. i can’t even read sugar daddy au’s because they’re always so unrealistic

MC: You personally sang an OST [for your drama].  How was that?

Park Bo Gum: It’s fascinating to me even now.  When I search my name, the album cover comes up, which makes me really happy.  For a long time, it was something I had wanted to do, and finally, my wish has come true.

MC: Weren’t you preparing to be an idol in the past?

Park Bo Gum: I dreamed of being active as a singer before my debut, so I auditioned.  I like music so much.  However, there are a lot of people who are misinformed. I’ve never been a trainee.  I never lived as a trainee.
