I dislike empty houses posts that say things like “empty first house means you’re introverted and unaware of your identity” or “empty second house means you’re not materialistic”

this is incorrect. If someone had Aries for example on the first house cusp, they tend to be aware of themselves just fine, typically confident in fact. Or Cancer in the 2nd can suggest indulgence and fluctuations with purchases (in other words, materialistic). Having an empty house does not mean anything inherently negative, nor does is implicate an “opposite effect” such as the examples above…

Rulerships play a role in this regard. Using the same examples, sure, someone can have an Aries rising and seem unaware of themselves because perhaps the ruler of their first (mars) is aspecting Neptune (the dissolver) harshly, which means difficulty in self-assertion and thus insecurity of the self. Or Someone can have Cancer in the second house which implies materialism, but have ruler of the second (moon) found in the 8th, which implies someone more concerned with the Unknown and intangible, material purchases with this person would not have as much meaning.
