there are too many characters and i don't know what to tag

Hey Voltron Fandom, what the fuck?

I’m going to get straight to the point, you guys are self-destructive and are going to kill the fandom over your petty arguments and stupid self-entitlement. There hasn’t been a day since the beginning of the fandom that everything has just been peaceful for once (and I’ve been here since it’s birth) You all should be ashamed of yourselves, fighting online and hurting real people over fiction (this is not specifically towards ships btw) And I’m putting my foot down at all of this bullshit and trying to stop it

This is pretty lengthy so everything is under the cut

I don't watch voltron (I plan to but haven't had the time yet), so could you please explain the sheith discourse? Idk anything about any of the characters specifically, but just based on appearances I've always liked that better than klance.

Oh my sweet summer child, I wish you well if you ever decide to brave through this fandom hell. Okay so I’ll sum this up because honestly I do not wish to talk about this discourse anymore.

Everything started shortly after the show aired on Netflix on June 10th. Due to Keith’s and Shiro’s close bond, familiarity with one another and always attempting to protect each other, they became a popular ship. So popular in fact that Josh Keaton, Shiro’s voice actor, acknowledged this on his blog and even coined the name for the ship: sheith.

It didn’t take long until he and Neil Kaplan, Zarkon’s voice actor, started mentioning sheith on their twitters as well. To top it off, Chris Palmer, who directs the show, also made this Shiro drawing with the description “Shiro loves you, baby” and tagged “he is looking at Keith.” Honestly with so many people involved with the show (even if the VAs aren’t directly involved, it was still nice) showing support for the ship, and considering Montgomery and dos Santos who previously worked on The Legend of Korra are producers in Voltron, a lot of people believe they could become canon like Korra and Asami.

Things blew up however when SDCC happened in July. Tim Hedrick, Montgomery and dos Santos who were at the event were asked by a fan about the ages of the characters, since the only clue we had was the DreamWorks’ site saying they’re teenagers. Pidge is 14, Shiro is 25 at most and everyone else is late teens.

However, many fans interpreted it as proof that Shiro is factually 25 and the other three are 17 and claim that Shiro/Paladin ships are pedophilia, wrong, incorrect and a bunch of other nasty things. They use the video as confirmation and refuse each and any other evidence to contrary, even when it comes from the same people that were in the video. Some even attack the voice actors over it, which is why Josh Keaton stopped talking about ships altogether on Twitter. The truth is, most people before and after the video saw and still see Hunk, Keith and Lance as being 18-19 and Shiro as 20-22 at most, not 25 since he doesn’t even look that old.

There is a whole lot more to this story, including but not limited to the fact that the official comic still mentions they’re five teenagers even after the SDCC event, Josh Keaton confirmed on twitter that ages were never brought up during recording and how Hedrick, Montgomery and dos Santos refuse to answer any all questions regarding the ages, and someone found a video prior to the age video where Montgomery talked about Shiro being a student, not an instructor as people against the ship kept mentioning. Recently Pidge’s voice actor also snapchatted about Shiro/Keith and Shiro/Keith/Lance. Last week it was revealed that the garrison where the paladins previously studied at is college like education and a military base as well, meaning they couldn’t be younger than 18.

Tbh the whole thing is a mess, the only thing we know for sure is that the creators themselves apparently never gave this too much thought in the first place because they wanted people to see the characters as being the age they believe them to be. And now they either refuse to talk about it anymore or contradict each other in what they have to say about it, but antis refuse to stop and continue harassing shippers and the ship tags daily with violent threats and name calling.

Incidentally, NYCC is coming up this week and the same three crew members will there. It is speculated that more fans will ask them about the ages and I’m already dreading the next wave of shitstorm coming this friday.

For more about Shiro/Paladin discussions, this post is a good post about it.

You're my best friend

I just got my hair cut and I’m feeling overly emotional, and I don’t know how these two things relate, but here have some sterek.

They have been together for a while now. They just got their first apartment together, and saying that both of them were high on love (for each other) and hope (for a new happy life) would be quite the understatement.

There had been a time when either of them had thought that they could never have the other, that after Derek left they would never find each other again, and they had never even thought possible that one day they could have a place, a home together. And yet, here they were.

They just finished mounting their new bed, and Stiles falls on the bare mattress with a satisfied “oof” Derek following shortly after him.

And it’s then that somehow it hits Stiles. It hits him so hard and so suddenly that he’s so overwhelmed with it that his eyes burn and he wants to yell it at the top of his lungs, but at the same time the emotion is so strong that clogs up his throat, and he can barely manage to speak.

So, he just makes a small noise (all he can muster right now) and rolls over to Derek’s side, throwing one arm over Derek’s body and burying his face into Derek’s neck.

Derek huffs out a surprised laugh, but promptly starts rubbing his back soothingly.

“Derek,” Stiles mumbles, when he finds his voice again.

Derek hums questioningly and Stiles hugs him close, a little bit tighter, before he gets out of his hiding spot and looks up at his boyfriend.

“You’re my best friend.” He says, all intense, earnest and sincere eyes.

Because it’s true. Yes, Scott is the friend he knew longer, they had their high and lows and highs again, and he’s like a brother, but that’s just it, Scott is his brother.

Derek is his best friend.

Derek is the person that he thinks about first when he’s thought of a stupid joke and wants to share it with someone. Derek is the one he looks for when he wants to tell someone about what his favourite character is going through, even if it’s a show or a book that Derek hasn’t watched yet. Derek is the name on his lips when he wants to tell or show someone how he managed to do something, even if it’s just as ordinary and banal as Stiles managing to doodle a real-looking wolf shadow, he knows that even if his first reaction would be to roll his eyes, he’d do so smiling in that warm way that always tell Stiles so many things. Like how loved he is, and how Derek is proud of him, even for the little things. And Derek is the one that he glances up to look at before he even knows why.

And that’s why he hates fighting with him so much, because he’s fighting with his boyfriend and best friend. And really, there’s no one in his life that can match with everything that Derek means to him. Derek is his special person, everyone has their special person, don’t they?

And Derek is Stiles’ person.

And yes, Derek is his boyfriend, and they had already said their ‘I love you’s to each other a long time ago, but Derek is also, and maybe most importantly, Stiles’ best friend too, and Stiles really needs him to know that.

“You’re my best friend,” he repeats, because he needs him to understand.

And of course, because Derek is his everything plus his best friend, smiles small and understanding, before he leans down to kiss him on the corner of his mouth, feather-light and all softness, and whispers “you’re my best friend, too.”

And Stiles knows that Derek understands, because he can see in his eyes that Stiles is his person too.

ok i'm a bit confused on the whole peter is a trans boy thing?? please don't think i'm being rude or anything i'm just curious bc i don't know much ab it. if he were just starting to transition how would his body be so muscular / wouldn't he have to wear a binder ?? esp if he's only 15 i mean teens don't usually get surgery that young do they ?? again i promise i'm not trying to be hateful if i am pls tell me !! i'm just curious (i know it's a hc but still lol)

honestly it’s probably best if you don’t read too deeply into it, because at the end of the day peter parker being trans is just a headcanon

however, it is a headcanon that i’d like to justify further. so;

1) how would his body be so muscular?

trans people, like cis people, have many different body types independent of their age and sex assigned at birth. a muscular 15yo is not unreasonable, even if that character is trans boy / dfab. hell, there are plenty of cis girls who are muscular at that age.

this is Isis Holt. she’s 15.

this is Tessa Barresi. she’s 16.

both of them are teens and have a more arguably “athletic” build than tom holland’s portrayal of spider-man, and neither of them have a super-powered spider bite and/or depo-testosterone to help increase their musculature!

wouldn’t he have to wear a binder ?

this is a common misconception. yes, most trans men do wear binders when they are pre-op. however, it is possible for a trans boy to have no visible chest tissue before undergoing top surgery.

we see peter in civil war while he is presenting as male and is (presumably) 14 or 15 years old. if peter began to ‘medically transition’ before civil war, it is very possible that he would have no breast tissue to speak of!

aside from that, trans youth exist: some as young as five years old. many of them are put on blockers around the ages of 12-15 so they do not undergo natal puberty. here is an article detailing hormone blockers. if peter began identifying as trans even younger in his life and got put on blockers, he would never undergo ‘female’ puberty in the first place!

not to mention, plenty of people who are designated female at birth never grow large breasts.

above is a photo of an adult cis woman with no prominent breast tissue. also, the chances of being flat chested increase amongst lower body-fat percentages. because peter is such a skinny kid, even if he did grow a chest it would likely still be small. plenty of dfab people are flat chested, with or without hormone blockers / surgery.

this is ty turner! he had already finished natal puberty when he came out and started T as a late teenager. even so, he still does not need to bind!!

plus, if peter began testosterone at 14~15 (which is legal in New York with adult consent), his physique would be different.

this is mack beggs. at the time of that photo, he was 17 and approx. 1 year and 4 months on testosterone. he is also pre-op and is still flat-chested.

he’s only 15 i mean teens don’t usually get surgery that young do they?

this is definitely an important point. yes- it is very, very, very unlikely that a trans man will receive surgery at that age. still, it is not outside the realm of possibility. most transmasc people don’t have surgery at that age because:

  • they haven’t developed a chest yet, so surgery is not necessary
  • they started hormones/blockers young and will never need top surgery
  • they don’t have parental support
  • they don’t have the financial means to get top surgery

let me be clear here– it is much more likely that peter was on blockers or just too young to have visible breasts when he transitioned. however, it is still possible that he had top surgery. in the US, it is legal for a minor to have top surgery with the consent of a guardian. Aunt May could’ve given him the greenlight to do it.

and as far as financial obligations go, if peter needed top surgery, do you really think his adopt-a-dad & billionare tony stark would hesitate? he spent millions on peter’s suit! if peter wanted top surgery, tony definitely would’ve shelled out the $6-10k it would’ve cost (and that’s without insurance).

tldr; yes, it’s still possible that peter could be trans.

my personal headcanon is that he started T at 14, but never developed breasts before then because he was such a skinny dude. however, it is also possible that he was on blockers as a kid or that he underwent top surgery! it’s a headcanon that is completely open for interpretation, so have fun with it. i just wanted to lay out some Trans Facts™ over what is technically possible.

have fun!!

@overflowingpassion (it won’t let me tag you, rip). Have some Phichit! There were just so many options for him but I decided to choose scenes that focused on him specifically. Hopefully you enjoy this set!

Phichit, as a character, always feels to me like a breath of fresh air. He’s optimistic and energetic without being in your face about it. He’s supportive without being too pushy and strives towards his own goals without stepping on anyone else’s to get there. He’s able to find the good in any situation and set his bar to be achievable enough for himself to take joy in both their accomplishment as well as the entire journey to get there. I know he gets a lot of love in the fandom but I still can’t help feeling that he is still unappreciated.

I think what we all truly need is the OVA we’ve all been demanding, Phichit on Ice:

soul-rin-natsu  asked:

Can you recommend any klance fics?.

I can definitely recommend lots of klance fics. As in, lots lots. I am not completely sure what you are looking for/what you have already read though, so I’m just gonna list some of my favorite authors with some of my favorite fics.

Quick additional info: there are no explicit fics on here, though some are rated mature. All of the stories have klance as their only ship but since I intended this to be author recs rather than fic recs, I will mention what kinds of other ships appear in other fics.

Now then, here you go, in no particular order:

manamune

- Crossroads (106k): not quite canon verse, not quite AU - check the summary

- Plunged (6k): canon verse, Lance teaches Keith how to swim

Roommates (6k): modern AU, Artist!Keith, Photographer!Lance, exactly what the title says

This author’s writing is amazingly smooth and I particularly enjoy their Keith. Crossroads was my favorite fic for a long, long time until I found some others that were just as good :D [this author also wrote some nsfw and sheith]

magisterpavus

- He Who Fights Monsters (65k): AU, there are dragons

This author has a style of writing that makes you forget that time exists. Like, you read their stories, look up 2 hours later and go “what the hell I only just started reading 5 minutes ago”. Their fics are pretty action-heavy but the romance part never falls short. [they wrote a lot of nsfw, their newest fic is shklance]

mackerelmademedoit

- Entangled (102k): canon verse, Keith and Lance get mind-melded

- Right-hand Man (4k): canon verse, Keith approaches Lance after the end of season 2 to talk about their roles from now on

Amazing characterizations here. I particularly enjoyed the OS because it seemed like something that genuinely could happen like this in canon… sadly I don’t think it will, but one can dream, right :’D Also amazing art! [they wrote some nsfw]

redburn

- it had to be you (9k): modern AU, Keith and Lance are professors, lots of flirting

- Echoes In Your Mind (7k): canon verse, Keith is turning Galra

- let the whole world know (4k): modern AU, soulmates AU

I honestly don’t know why I like this author so much? Probably because they can squeeze an entire story into less than 10k words, complete with character development and appearances from friends etc. I liked many more of their OS but there are just so many, you should check it out for yourself. [they wrote some nsfw and shallura]

varelsen

- Not That Bad (68k): modern AU, socially anxious!Keith, lots and lots of fluff

- just like that (10k): canon verse, Lance struggles with his crush on Keith

this author just? makes reading feel so good? so relaxing?? Their style is focused on conveying emotions and flows really nicely, I strongly recommend to give it a try. [their newest story is nsfw and includes lancelot]

battleshidge (Amiria_Raven)

- Drive Me Crazy (8k): modern AU, lots of flirting and stupid pick-up lines

- Next Level (33k; WIP): modern AU, online gaming, they know each other but they don’t know that they know each other

The style of writing is really, really good and I love how everyone’s friendships get portrayed. The author is also pretty good at writing conflicted emotions. [they wrote some shallura and shidge]

aknightley

- it’s all in my head (8k): canon verse, mind meld

This author is super good with emotions. You always end up feeling what the characters are feeling and I’d definitely recommend going through their other fics as well - once again, there are just so many that I won’t list them all. [they wrote some nsfw and shallura]

lemoninagin

- You Can Fog Up My Windows Anytime (3k): modern AU, all the awkward flirting

Another author that has a fantastic style of writing and portrays the characters really well. Also another author that wrote so many good things that I can’t possibly put them all on here. [they wrote some nsfw, sheith, shklance, shallura- lots of stuff, check the tags]

MilkTeaMiku

- Moonset Deep (50k, WIP): mermaid AU, lance is the mermaid

- The Quiet (40k, WIP): ghost AU, lance is the ghost

- 7 Days Series (pt 1 - 30k, pt 2 - 30k, pt 3 - 4k): canon verse, lance/keith get turned into babies

Amazing writing, plot-orientated. Don’t let that fool you though, the emotions never fall short. [they wrote some shallura, shance and other ships - also their fics aren’t rated. the ones listed are entirely sfw]

Zizzani

- Drive It Like You Mean It (94k): modern AU, street racing AU, it gets pretty intense later

This writer has a really fluent and nice style of writing and they somehow manage to easily let lots of characters interact. Everyone feels extremely in character and nothing feels forced. Also I know nothing about cars and yet their fics belong to my favorites, so give it a try. [they wrote some shallura]

shipstiel

- Of Don Juan And Elvis (3k): modern AU, soulmate AU

- Barbie Girl (2k): modern AU, soulmate AU, continuation

I’m not sure whether it’s just me but no matter what fic of them I read, they always feel– soft. Easy. Something good for in-between. One of their fics (not the ones listed here) has some pretty heavy topics in it and yet I still feel like that. [they wrote some shallura]

Gigapoodle

- A Moment in the Snow (3k): canon verse, Galra!Keith, snowball fights, fluff

- Carpe Diems and Chrysanthemums (14k): modern AU, hanahaki disease, trans Lance, angst with a happy ending

- A Quarter Past Midnight (14k): canon verse, trans Keith, angst with a happy ending

This author is amazing at writing angst. It just always hits you right in the feels. Like damn. I adore their writing so much but ho boy I was too scared to click the one Chara Death fic they wrote. I couldn’t do that to myself, the two longer OS that I listed here already gave me enough feelings. [they wrote some shallura]

Trashness

- Nightmares (15k): canon verse, sleeping together, as in snuggling, fluff

- Costumed Identities (42k): modern AU, cosplay AU, they know each other but they don’t know they know each other

This author writes Keith’s and Lance’s interactions really nicely. They also never fail to make me smile/laugh with their fics, they are all really cute!! Lots of light heartened stuff here.

SKayLanphear

- Running Flat (11k): canon verse, thought sharing, lance is trying to figure out who has the crush on him

- A Commutal Contract (24k, WIP): canon verse, bed sharing

I really really really enjoy this author’s Lance!! He feels incredibly in character and I swear I can see him act in canon just like he does in the fics. Their style of writing is fluent, nice and adapts really well to the situation.

[I also really enjoy witty_name’s and freshia’s fics, both of whom usually put background shallura into their fics though so I couldn’t list them here]

Aaaand that’s it for now! :D If you have a specific length/specific topics/specific ratings in mind for what you want to read, feel free to send another message!! You can also visit the fic rec tag on my blog, maybe you’ll find something else there.

/EDIT: now there is a part two with some other of my favorite fics

Hi, if you don't mind me asking, what other instances of things unsaid play a role in Gon and Killua's friendship?

Alright let’s talk a little about Gon and Killua’s unique dynamic.

So much of Gon and Killua’s relationship is built on less words and more action and unspoken understanding—or like I’d said in the tags, more about what’s unsaid than what’s said—and I think it’s one of the things that makes their dynamic so interesting. The way the two boys communicate and understand each other is seriously fascinating sometimes.

Tag List Revamp

So - my tag lists are getting to the point where they are a little out of control. And since I’m coming up on 2,000 followers (seriously, holy shit) I figured it was a good time to clean it up a bit.

Below you’ll find my current lists.

To stay on the list, all you need to do is like this post.

Pretty simple, right? If you want to stay, just like it… if you’re already on a list and would like an adjustment, let me know. Asks are best, but I’ll keep an eye on this post so replies here are okay too.

anonymous asked:

can u perhaps give me ur thoughts on fans' theory about juvia being gray's second choice. i've seen loads of posts saying that gray had feelings for lucy but stepped down bc he saw her chemistry with natsu. but i don't think that's the case, gray was attracted to lucy bc of her looks. juvia on the other hand, i am confindently positive that he is attracted to her as a whole; her personalities, her looks, her everything and her in general. juvia was never his second choice, juvia IS his choice.

Well, I have to applaud you, anon. You pretty much nailed it, and I agree with you. I’ve said this before, but Gray has always been portrayed as a normal guy who finds attractive girls attractive. If Lucy was his first choice, then what is Erza, or Virgo, or the cute waitresses at the guild? Because he clearly had an attraction to all of them and has shown at least as much “interest” in them, as he has canonically shown in Lucy.

Gray seemed to have a crush on Erza when she entered the guild, he called Virgo cute, and he was blushing over the waitresses new uniforms when they came back from the Tower of Heaven. Lucy is a beautiful girl, so I’m sure Gray thought so, too.

Mashima basically showed us Gray is just a character who finds attractive girls attractive. Nothing more, nothing less.

I also feel like this headcanon is simply built off of fans love for Lucy. So, if Lucy is your favorite girl, the more guys who like her, the merrier. She still gets her choice of guy, but doesn’t it feel good to have lots of characters interested in Lucy? Doesn’t that show how awesome she is? And I get that feeling. As a Juvia fan, I loved that Lyon loved her. It was nice and fun when that actual love triangle was in play. But, the difference is, that love triangle was supported by the manga. While the Natsu, Lucy, and Gray one doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

To say Gray decided he couldn’t go for Lucy, because of Natsu’s feelings? Shounen is not that subtle. Mashima would have shown us Gray having such a revelation. Even a slight one would have sufficed. But we have NEVER seen Gray take notice of Natsu’s relationship with Lucy. Not once. Likewise, and even more importantly, we have never seen Gray fall in love with Lucy. So, you can have the headcanon, but it’s not supported by one piece of manga evidence, and that’s a fact.

Mashima has only ever shown Gray to have romantic development with one girl. That girl was Juvia. That IS supported with manga evidence. A LOT of it. And the above headcanon is trying to undermine the importance of that fact.

Imagine if people started saying Lucy was a second choice for Natsu because Lisanna died? If she hadn’t, he’d have probably ended up with her, because their relationship seemed very similar to his and Lucy’s before she got swept off to Edolas. And even Gildarts seemed to think she was a big deal to him.

But, as a Nalu shipper, I don’t think that’s true, because Lisanna came back, and that didn’t alter or harm Natsu’s relationship with Lucy, and if anything, Lisanna encouraged Lucy to stick close to Natsu.

But, saying that Lucy was Natsu’s second choice is just as undermining as saying Juvia was Gray’s. And there’s no doubt, it would piss people off royally. Especially if such a theory was tagged as nalu.

IMO, Gray is a very strong-willed character. If he had wanted to pursue Lucy, I honestly see nothing to stop him from doing so. Many of us are still not even sure of Natsu’s feelings, but Gray knew? All that time ago? Without Mashima showing us he knew, and showing us him making that conscious decision to back off of Lucy? Please.

IMO Gray never pursued Lucy for the same reasons he never seemed to have any previous romantic relationships. Because his feelings never progressed to that point until Juvia, thanks to the development he had with her, and because of the type of person she is. She was overt in her feelings. She showed him care, and understanding, and patience, and most importantly, she helped heal him through the pain and guilt and fear that has been holding him back from embracing anyone the way he’s prepared to embrace Juvia.

And we know the above is a fact, because we’ve been taken through that development step-by-step. Mashima took the time to show it to us, because it was important. He showed us Gray growing past things, and opening up because of Juvia.

So, how could he have liked Lucy to the extent of needing to “back off for Natsu’s sake” when he was too closed off at that point to have those kinds of serious feelings for anyone? And not one shred of manga evidence proves otherwise.

He LOVES Juvia. And the manga has shown us he’s never been in love before, until Juvia., because she is the only one Mashima has shown us Gray falling in love with. She was the one who made the ice mage feel WARM. She’s the one who’s NOT a friend. She was the one he died for on more than one occasion. She’s the first person he thought of when speaking of what he wanted to do when the war was over. And she’s the one he promised an answer to.

So, it would be nice if people stopped trying desperately to undermine Gray’s feelings and development with Juvia. The manga doesn’t support those Natsu x Lucy x Gray headcanons. It’s as simple as that.

anonymous asked:

i'm sorry it why do you ship junkrat with mei?? if you haven't noticed or actually played overwatch, you'd know that mei hates junkrat, they despise each other and they're total opposites. and no, opposites don't always attract.

Ladies and Gentleman, we have a first!

In the two or so years I’ve had this blog, I’ve never had an antagonistic anon before. Then again, I only ever started branching out into non-Soul Eater things in September, so maybe this is just what happens when you start to create content for bigger fandoms?

First things first: If you don’t like the content I post, I suggest that you either unfollow my blog or use blacklist to block the tags for content you don’t like. Your Tumblr experience is curated by you. I’ll tag my content to help you blacklist topics you wish to avoid, but it’s ultimately up to each user to take the necessary steps to tailor their dashboard.

Secondly, in sending me a rude ask, you have given me an excuse to talk about a favorite ship of mine. So buckle up, we’ve got a long post incoming!

Why ship Junkrat and Mei? Why ship any two characters?

Take a gander at this post by @chaoticlivi. It’s a pretty exhaustive list of reasons people get invested in the relationship between any two characters. They span from aesthetic and visual tastes (these two look great together!) to more in depth, thematic ones (their relationship embodies a theme I care about). Basically, there are many many reasons to love a ship, and canon rarely has much to do with it.

In general, canon is a box of scraps. This is especially true for Overwatch, which despite its exhaustive lore leaves many holes in character stories and relationships. Nothing in the game itself (which I do play often, btw) is ‘canon.’ The voicelines you hear haven’t actually happened. They are meant to give us insight into the characters, their histories, and their relationships, but you can’t quote them as something Mei or Junkrat have actually said.

In-game content is also in flux. As more shorts and comics come out, as the actual Overwatch lore grows, the game evolves too. It’s possible what’s canon within the game now will change later on.

What I’m saying is, you can point at two voicelines and wave around words like ‘hate’ until you are blue in the face, but that won’t 1) make it canon that Junkrat and Mei will be at odds forever or 2) make me any less likely to ship them.

Now that I’ve got the “shipping doesn’t need a canon basis and Overwatch shipping is a crapshoot built on nearly nothing anyway” part done, I can actually talk about Mei and Junkrat.

But none of that shit matters in this post. What DOES matter is Jamie Campbell Bower’s similarity Draco Malfoy in some of your fics-or ones you’ve read yourself. Jamie as Marlowe is THE reason to watch the show. Seriously. Watch a scene with him and tell me you’re not aroused af. He is the perfect combination of flamboyant, androgynous and flippant all rolled up into one delicious package. I read so many fics you guys post, and most of the time this is how I imagine Draco being. And I mean that as a huge compliment to all of you. Your Draco’s all have so many facets to their personalities that none of them ever feel 2 dimensional. And that goes for illustrations too (I’m looking at you, boo! @fae-voritensfw <3) So if you have already seen some of this show or plan on it I would fucking LOVE to hear your opinion’s on Christopher Marlowe’s character. And if you know any friends of your on tumblr that like the show please tag them so we can all talk about it. Because no one in my real life watches this. And I’m terribly lonely. It’s fine.

I wanted to draw Grimmjow with long hair. Also Ichihime as soldiers… or rather a princess that can protect the soldier back. Took a lot of liberties with the armour please don’t try to make sense of them!  (ichihime only version of this post)

I have some personal notes for Grimm’s Alternative Versions under the ReadMore, but as far as the other pics go, there’s not much to say. Hope you like it anyway.

hufflepuffkira  asked:

hey Giulia!! I was wondering if you had any writing advice/tips? As you well know I'm a huge fan of your writing and I aspire to reach your level of talent aha. I apologize if I've already asked for your advice before too, you absolutely don't have to answer again if I have! (I love love your new theme btw!!)

This is so flattering Cosi omg thank you. I’ll try to put together some of my favorite posts that i often check while writing and maybe add some more.

  • here’s some general writing tips by @wellsjahasghost that i find extremely useful.
  • @rongasm wrote so many writing tips as well so you should definitely check out her writing stuff tag. This “How to develop/come up with a good plot” post helped me out a lot. Also i agree on every point of this post about what attracts me the most in a fic.
  • @danielzharman‘s writing tag include tips of every kind, if you either wanna write a fic or a novel, you can find some very helpful for your vocabulary, plot and general information for descriptions.

when i write i always check these ones in particular:

  1.   “how to translate emotions into written body language”
  2. “57 senses to use in your writing”
  3. “words to use more often + words instead of ‘said’ + words instead of ‘looks’ + showing emotions and feelings”  (this is more for non-native english speakers maybe?)
  • Personally, being english not my first language i always struggle with finding synonyms  and i’m always afraid of feeling repetitive with my expressions, so WIDEN YOUR VOCABULARY and always REREAD your sentences, read them out loud to see if they do sound natural and fluent, as well as your dialogues.
  • FIND A BETA, cause they really save your ass and even if your grammar is somehow perfect you’ll always need someone to cheer you up and that roots for you. Your beta is not only the one who corrects your work, but is someone you can count on when you need a good advice or even just an opinion about your writing. It’s not just a “writing/professional” relationship, strictly bound to your fic. ( ps. @youaretoosmart@stilesprefers-screamers ily)
  • PUNCTUATION is!! important!! You can tell me the best story ever with good characters and development but i can’t really follow it if paragraphs are commas-free and capital letters are optional.
  • COHERENCE, both for grammar and plot. Aka:
  1. don’t mix the tenses up. If you start with the present tense, stick with it and vice versa. (Unless you’re writing in present and have to do a flashback or something)
  2. as for the plot: always be careful about the dates and the socio-cultural background. For ex. if you’re setting your story post-college, you have to consider colleges in USA last four years. Or the fact that In USA you use different scales of measurement etc…
  • Also, when i read a fic, i have this small pad where i note all the expressions or words i either don’t understand or i find inspiring. There, i write down also some brainstormings for my fics whenever something inspires me, which can happen with movies, literature, tv shows… whatever. FIND INSPIRATION in everything you do: hobbies, places etc…just, pay attention to it, you know.
  • FOR MULTICHAPTERS you can deal with it as you like it but personally, i like to have everything scheduled. So for example for Quietus i’ve done the same process Rachel and Maggie did for Rainflower and made a two-lines plot for each chapter, set up the povs and basically wrote some key-words. I used Google Sheets.
  • if you have friends who are writers as well, DON’T BE AFRAID OF ASKING FOR OPINIONS, granted of course that you gotta be willing to accept constructive critics too (as Jade said). For my own experience, writers are very supportive with each other yikes.

i think … that’s it? Also because the others’ posts are really detailed and i don’t think i have much more to add on it.

Hopefully it can be enough, & for any advice or anything i’m always here to talk xx

anonymous asked:

do you have any advice about getting your fics read a lot / popular / out there when you don't have a lot of followers on tumblr and ao3?

I started writing umfb with only a handful of followers on both tumblr and AO3 and none of them being YOI fans so trust me when I say it’s perfectly possible to get popular fics even if you have no basis to work from. Although honestly it’s a combination of your own writing, the preferences of the fandom and luck that dictates what gets popular and what doesn’t.

First things first, you want to make what you write appealing to people to make them want to read it. Think about what someone is going to see on A03 when they look at your fic and if that’s going to make them want to click on it. Tag well, don’t put too many or people wont bother to read them all but tag all the things in your fic that people in fandom want to read so it’s easily searchable for people looking for specific things. Looking at the popular tags page of AO3 can help with this. Also, tag your triggers! If your story has anything potentially triggering like rape, major character death etc then tag them. Those tags are there for a reason and it’s very bad fandom practice not to warn people about potentially triggering material.

Next, think about your summary. It needs to draw attention, people want to know what they’re getting into when they read a fic so don’t make it super vague or people wont bother but leave an air of mystery about the story to draw people in. Just enough information to make it clear what the story is about but enough intrigue to make people want to click on your story (summaries are the hardest part of writing for me so this can be a very difficult one!). Also, don’t degrade yourself in the summary or the tags. If you say something like ‘this sucks but read it anyway’ or ‘I suck at summaries but it’s good I promise’ or even ‘my first ever fanfic’, it’ll put people off straight away. It makes you not sound confident in your work and if you’re not confident in it then other people wont be either.

Once you’ve got your front page worked out, let’s think about the fic itself. The first thing that that will immediately make me exit out of a fic is no paragraph breaks. You need to present the story well so it’s easy to read or the likelihood is that people wont bother. Also, your first paragraph is really, really important. Your first line even more so. Think about what someone who has never read you fic before will see when they start reading and if it is gripping enough to make them stay. Your first line should hook the reader in and your first paragraph should make them want to know more. If it’s boring them might click out and go onto something else. There’s no set rules for what your first paragraph needs to be about but if you’re giving an in depth description of a character’s clothing or telling the reader all about the colour of their hair people might get bored and not bother to read further. Make it snappy, make it interesting, make people want to know more.

The rest of your first chapter (assuming we are talking about multichapters here) can be whatever you want to be but remember that you want people to subscribe. There is nothing wrong with short chapters but something has to happen in your first chapter to make people care enough to be willing to wait for the next part. It doesn’t need to be anything big or game changing but there needs to be some element of suspense at the end to make people want to know what happens next. If the entire first chapter is just world building and nothing happens to any of the characters or the plot doesn’t move at all, some people might be put off. However, a lot of this depends on the quality of the writing, some writers can pull of something completely against everything I’ve just said and that’s brilliant. But as a general rule of thumb for getting started this is what I’ve seen to work more often than not.

Finally, post at a good time. I’m not the best person to ask about posting times but if you google the best time to post on AO3 some people have come up with really good summaries of when the traffic is high or not. Sometimes posting in high traffic is good because there are more readers, sometimes it’s bad because your fic might get lots in the flood. Honestly it’s all just a gamble.

Apart from that, the rest is pretty much up to you and the quality of your writing, fandom preferences and luck. If you write a popular trope more people will read it as opposed to something niche. It doesn’t mean your writing is any less quality but sometimes people just don’t want to read about certain things even if you want to write about them and there’s nothing you can do to change that. And the other part is luck. I’ve read some truly fantastic fics in previous fandoms that have very little recognition and some ones that I personally dislike but everyone else seems to love. Luck does play a huge part in whether your fic gets read or not, it’s just an unfortunate fact of fandom.

And finally, this is not going to be helpful advice for YOI since it is now very established but if your main goal is popularity, write fast and write early. The newer a fandom is the more interest there is and the less fics are out there so the more people will read what there already is. I started writing umfb when YOI was still coming out because interest was very high and there were no rivals fics out there yet which meant I could write for a popular trope that currently had no competition. The bigger a fandom is, the harder it is to get recognized. That is absolutely not saying that you shouldn’t write for big fandoms! Every fic is a gift and there is no such thing as too much fanfic, especially when there is long waits between official content being produced. But don’t beat yourself up if your fic isn’t as popular as the big fics out there on the first page. I guarantee you most of them will have been started being written early on in the fandom  which means those writers were writing in completely different circumstances than you. Plus popularity is entirely subjective. Although it’s going to sound completely ironic coming from me, I’ve never actually been in a fandom where my favourite fic is the most popular one. Everyone likes different things, everyone writes about different things and even if your fic isn’t the most popular one out there it doesn’t mean that people wont love it. Just write what you want to write and remember, there is no-one who can write your fic like you can!

People talk about only relating to characters who look like you or are the same gender or whatnot as you.

I kinda find it funny because in many cases it’s not exactly true.

I’m a woman but many characters I look up to, find comfort in, and relate to are men. No matter how many female characters are in a show, I might still relate to a male character because of his personality or life history. That doesn’t mean the lady characters are wrong or bad characters, it just means that there is something about this male character that I find relateable.

For example, there’s Lt. Commander Data from Star Trek: TNG. He’s an Android who wishes to be human and acts in similiar ways to many autistic people because he is an Android. As a woman with autism, I can relate to how he acts. I’ve done some stuff that’s similiar to what Data has done (and received second-hand embarrassment watching him do it lol). Data wants to be human so badly and tries his hardest to act like a human. His friends encourage him. That’s similiar to how I want to be more “normal” in the area of socializing.

Another example is Dr. Banner from the Avengers. Even though it has been demonstrated that Black Widow has self-esteem issues (which I also struggle with), my favorite character and the one I find most relateable is Dr. Banner/Hulk.

The lines “In case you needed to kill me, but you can’t! I know! I tried!… I got low. I didn’t see an end, so I put a bullet in my mouth… and the other guy spit it out!” almost had me start crying when I first heard it.

I have been struggling with suicidal ideation since I was 9, and at age 12, I tried to kill myself. I felt so low and overcome with self-hatred (as well as at times thinking I was a monster) that I just wanted to end it. When I heard Banner say that line, I knew that he had experienced it too. He was so scared of his Hulk side. I am scared of my anxiety because when it takes over I can’t always been brought back down, kinda like Hulk. And similiarities don’t end there, Natasha can calm Bruce down when he’s Hulk. Guess who is able to calm me down when I am freaking out? My boyfriend. To me, he was the most relateable character not only because of our similiar history with suicide but how he acts.

So basically what I’m saying is, don’t fucking say that people are only able to relate to characters of their same gender, race, ethnicity, etc. It’s not true for everyone. And if the only reason you like a character is because of one of those traits then you are extremely boring.

Any guidelines/rules or tips you could give me for making an OC with DID? I don't want to be stereotypical or offensive, and I want to be as accurate as possible!

I (and we) totally appreciate that! Doing thorough research, especially by reading the many accounts of people who publicly share their stories, will be of great help. Some YouTubers (Autumn Asphodel, Multiplicity and Me) and some blogs (like The We in Me) could be great places to start. You’re also welcome to check out the #DIDchat tag on twitter to read experiences of real people living with DID. It’s a weekly chat, but the hashtag can be viewed at any time!

Also, if you want a good feeling of what it’s like to live with DID, I’d recommend watching the show Sense8. It’s not actually about DID, but it’s basically exactly what living with DID is like lol.

But, let’s see, if I were to help you write this disorder into “a” character, here’s what I’d suggest:

  1. Understand why DID forms: Simply (and subjectively) put, DID forms when a child under the age of nine experiences repeated trauma that they cannot handle. They detach from it (dissociation) and when this dissociation isn’t enough, their brain literally creates a family–more than one person–to handle the trauma. Think of your character not as an individual, but a family or team that was built to handle circumstances an individual couldn’t handle alone. DID is an adaptive and creative disorder.

  2. When writing a character with DID, you’re not just writing one character. People with DID aren’t a person with alters–many of us consider ourselves and our alters to all be equal. One may appear most often, but that doesn’t mean we’re more of a person.

  3. Create complex backstories, worldviews, and motivations for each alter. Alters are full identities, meaning each one sees and experiences the world in a unique way. Essentially, create each alter into a whole individual person (with their innate “role” having to do with the trauma their whole system faced). Just like how a character’s experiences inform their personality, an alter’s experiences do the same. Keep in mind that alters can have different physical abilities and experiences too (i.e. different strengths, one having a mobility condition, one being blind, etc).

  4. Understand when each other will take over. Since they are multiple people, but all share one body, it’s common to fight for time out in the world. For self-expression, to be ourselves, and so on. Think about which characters are comfortable not revealing themselves, and if some feel the need to. Think about when they will take turns being up front (both accidentally and intentionally).

  5. Don’t focus solely on alters. Because people with DID are trauma survivors, we basically all have PTSD (most often Complex PTSD). Look into those symptoms and figure out what each individual alter will have as their most prominent symptoms, which ones distress them the most, and which can they handle well. Also, describe the complexities of dissociation, amnesia, and other symptoms with DID.

  6. Understand the alter’s role, but don’t stereotype them. (And gosh, please no murderous alters! Or if you have a violent one, have them be sympathetic and violent because they needed to in order to survive, since that’s the real story behind violent alters.) I’ll give an example of a stereotype versus reality below.

  7. Don’t make DID too obvious to the people who know the character (presuming they’re not “out”). Although sometimes it’s obvious that a person has more than one identity, it’s often a very subtle disorder. It more often appears as mood swings (like alters who tend to feel different moods more often–though remember that each alter can feel every emotion, they don’t represent single emotions unless they are fragments, but that’s more rare and probably too hard to get into in writing). As well as appearing as memory loss.

  8. Capture the issues people with DID face. Acceptance, stereotypes, stigma, being presumed to be dangerous, not being believed by mental health professionals, not having physical disorders taken seriously, and so on.

  9. Pay attention to the internal relationship dynamics. Communication is key for those of us with DID, we have to get to know each other, understand each other, and support each other if we want to live harmoniously. A good exercise might be to imagine (after writing all the alters’ basic character traits) them all stuck in a room together. How would they treat each other? What relationships would they have?

  10. Don’t forget the embarrassment of suddenly having someone comment on a private thought of yours. Alters, since we all share the same head, will sometimes chime in at really awkward moments. Even though we’re not all present at the same time, we are sometimes present at inopportune times.

And here are some personal examples corresponding to these above points that might help get your creative juices flowing! (All what I’m willing to share, so some might be vague, and heads up for abuse mentions.)

  1. For three of us, here’s how we all sort of formed. I think I, Arien, was around first. I’m generally compassionate, trusting, and try to heal others (even those that hurt me). When I was abused too painfully, more than I could handle, Bael came into being. He’s more sexual (basically adapted to get off on being abused) and he’s masochistic. When we were then asked to do morally questionable things by our abuser, Sion stepped in. He was colder and more detached, and didn’t have the same issues with morality as the rest of us. See how some of us formed to step into a situation the others couldn’t handle, or didn’t have the skills to? (Sense8 btw, gives a really good subjective portrayal of what this feels like.)

  2. Don’t really have anything to add to this point. Though, you might want to write one alter that’s hesitant to realize they are a we. I was initially scared I’d lose my sense of self when I was admitting I wasn’t alone in this body.

  3. Some examples of our differences: Bael is very good at drawing anatomy and understanding lines and angles when drawing. I’m a softer, more curvy, artist. I’m better at coloring. Sion likes overcast, rain, and wintery weather, whereas I get depressed and moody in the winter. Bael doesn’t like Indian food (besides chicken curry) but I LOVE Indian food. I have a mild mobility disability, Bael is very rarely disabled at all (he’s pretty strong, except for when our body as a whole gets sick). Ava is afraid of water, the rest of us love it.

  4. An example of intentionally taking over: Bael wants to talk during therapy, so on our walk there, he turns on his playlist and the music helps him come forward and feel grounded.

An example of accidentally taking over: During past abuse, I’d be abused and it would be intensely painful, then I’d just black out (not pass out, but no longer remember anything). Bael was taking over during that time. Sometimes we accidentally switch without amnesia. Like in therapy I was once talking about Bael and then Bael was like “wait…I think I’m here now” to our therapist.

  5. For context, I remember about 10% or less of my life. And I miss casual things too. Like my apartment is cleaned or messier and I don’t remember doing it. I’m half way to a destination and then realize that I’m halfway there (like not remembering how I got to the half way point). Recently, a friend texted to confirm we were meeting in an hour, and I had no recollection of us ever setting up a time to meet at all (despite it being in texts when I looked back and such). PTSD and other symptoms are things you can look up, I think they’d be easier to write. Also, sometimes we jump when we look in the mirror. Like we don’t recognize ourself (depending on who’s fronting) and it startles us.

  6. Okay! Stereotype versus reality. Sion (tentatively) said I can use him. He’s what’s sometimes called a “persecutor alter,” alters who tend to take after their abuser and sometimes will hurt the system or others. If you were to write a persecutor as a typically abusive, one-dimensional person, it would be stereotyping them. But, if I were to write someone, based on Sion, I’d describe how much he struggled to accept himself because of the immoral things he was forced to do and chose to do to save himself and us. How he felt that was all he was good at. I’d describe how he thought Bael needed to be hurt when he was stressed, because that’s what Bael described wanting. I’d talk about Sion’s complex desire to protect us, yet also being afraid he’d hurt us. There’s a lot more, but that’s all he’s comfortable with me sharing.

  7. In my own experience, I had one friend who had met a few of us alters and she kept a journal about it. But she thought maybe it was something spiritual. More commonly, I would just have confused friends (before my dx, when I didn’t have an explanation) be angry that I didn’t remember promising or telling something, accuse me of manipulating them. Whereas I literally just wasn’t the identity that had promised something or given a different opinion earlier. A friend also described me changing opinions mid-dialogue. Like “ah, I’ll totally commit to this lease, I feel great about it!” and then “there’s no way I’m going to commit. It’s a bad choice for all these reasons.” It wasn’t me doubting myself (it was multiple selves), but that’s how it looked like to others.

  8. There is SO much stigma around DID (one reason I’m happy to type all this out! To help dismantle that). Look into movies that bug those of us living with it, slurs and microaggressions (”yeah, it was like she had multiple personalities, she was so emotional!!”). How we’re treated as monsters rather than survivors. The fear we face whenever we see a new doctor or go to the hospital and have to decide if we want to say we have DID or not. How we’re left out of conversations about mental illness, abuse, and childhood trauma.

  9. This point’s more on your character development! But, I can say, us alters argue, support each other, comment on each other’s actions, I narrate what we’re doing sometimes (lol). Also, sometimes we’ll get tired of the others being in pain. It takes a lot of energy to always, in the back of your mind, know someone is hurting. (Like our Little will sometimes cry for a day or two and we can all hear it.)

  10. Oh gosh, point ten happens so much! Like I’ll be fantasizing about something then someone will comment on the thought and I’ll be like “auhhlsiudhfliushd” *blushes* xD. It’s even worse if one us fantasizes about another alter LOL. This can also happen with other private thoughts (not so funny ones) like suicide ideation, shame, watching one alter act on an addiction, etc. Also, us alters do feel some of each other’s emotions (like we’re affected by it), although it doesn’t feel like our emotions.

I really hope this helps you and many others write and understand DID! More questions are totally fine, and this post is okay to reblog

(Also hey if you want to pitch into my service dog fundraiser that would be awesome?? :D)

i know its nice being ship friendly and stuff but SOMEONE'S POINTING A GUN AT YOU, THEY HATE LEVIHAN AND THEY'RE GONNA KILL YOU IF YOU DON'T CONVINCE THEM OTHERWISE, YOU GOTTA DEFEND LEVIHAN WITH YOUR LIFE, WHAT'D YOU SAY? GO!

You know, that’s a really weird murderer. Anyway, THIS IS FUN! Honestly, i’d be dead already, because i don’t really care about convincing anyone when it comes to shipping. Before i start, i’m gonna state that ANYTHING I’LL SAY HERE IS BECAUSE I’M FIGHTING FOR MY LIFE, DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONAL, GUYS. These will be pretty much the reasons why i ship them. The first part is a bunch of “objective” reasons (well as objective as it can get, because shipping can’t be a totally objective thing) and the other one is personal, so is up to you when to stop reading this. I apologize in advance for my English.

1)      Levi and Hanji are both really interesting and complex characters. He isn’t just a typical shonen badass guy and she’s not a typical crazy scientist. Levi is actually , from my pov, the most caring and selfless character of all SnK, he literally sacrifices himself over and over for the sake of others. Hanji isn’t just this sweet cheerful character, she has a mesmerizing willpower, nothing can stop her.

2)      They complement each other amazingly. They are both strong and smart, but in different ways. Any virtue that Levi doesn’t have, Hanji has it. Every flaw that Hanji has, Levi doesn’t. And they share two really important virtues, which are the foundation of any healthy relationship: they are both so loyal and passionate. They are literally willing to give up their lives for the people they love.

3)      THEIR INTERACTIONS ARE SO FUN TO READ/WATCH. You just know that, whenever they are together, something great is going to happen. There’s something refreshing about them, about their bickering, about the way they work together, about the way they care about each other so deeply.

4)      I think nobody can understand them more than each other. They have experienced similar things as soldiers, they have lost people they love countless times. I bet they could be sharing each other stories all night long, reminiscing all of those good times with Moblit, Erwin and their old squads.

5)      Okay, i won’t force my ship to anyone, but since i’m fighting for my life here, i’ll say i think there are actual canon hints for Levihan. Like the “Levi bathes Hanji” thing, the “we tell each other everything” thing (don’t u dare telling me Hanji clearly said they’re just friends, cuz isn’t that what every Levihan shipper has as a headcanon? The idea of them not admitting their true feelings and say “we’re just friends” ‘cause they’re both awkward dorks), their interaction in ACWNR, their interaction in Shingeki! Chuugakkou, and the “Levihan is similar to Eremika” thing. It’s up to you, random killer, to decide if that means romance or not.

6)      I hate to fangirl here, but HAVE U SEEN THEM? They are both beautiful and would have babies as beautiful and brilliant as them. What a blessing. I love drawing them so much because their character design is gorgeous. Levi with his cold colors and Hanji with the warm colors, they even complement each other in that aspect.

7)      The Levihan fandom is amazing. Besides the fact that there’s no drama and everyone is so kind, I’m pretty sure this is the ship with the funniest fan art. Even the most serious person would smirk even a little bit while scrolling through the Levihan tag. I mean, we’re all about the laughs. All of the other ships usually focus on the classic romantic stuff (i say “classic” , because from my pov there’s nothing more romantic than the OTP having fun ❤). With Levihan, you’ll get from the most intense fan art to the most ridiculous headcanon, it’s so much fun. Some Levihan artists are pretty well known among non Levihan shippers because of that same reason, like @alemanriq, @trash-god or @drinkyourfuckingmilk . I mean, really, if you’re feeling down and need to cheer up a bit, they’re the way to go.

One of the main arguments people have against Levihan is that they’re too different, so it wouldn’t work. They even go as far as saying that Levi doesn’t really care that much about Hanji. My first response is that both Hanji and Levi are highly misunderstood characters. We don’t have to let our personal experience makes us decide what is love and what isn’t. We all show our love in very different ways.

Now heres my second argument to that idea and this is gonna get personal. If you don’t wanna read about my life, skip this.

Why do you think there is this accusation against Sam that's he is selfish in the fandom? I have so many people say this and I don't get it.

I’ve seen a fair bit of it, too, in certain corners of fandom, and even general fans have some ideas about Sam that aren’t really accurate.

It starts in the first episode, and it doesn’t get better from there—because, well… SPN is a show about hunting. It’s specifically a show about the Winchesters hunting together. (Understandably, anyone who resists the ~noble profession~ of hunting is viewed with suspicion.) More than that, it’s a show that, for a number of reasons (the foremost being the first two seasons’ need to keep Sam mysterious and emotionally distant from viewers to heighten the tension of “will he or won’t he turn evil because of these strange psychic powers?”) made sure viewers cared for Sam as much as they were cautious of him.

It was a masterful storytelling decision. The tension was high. But Sam’s emotions, because of that (and they were perfectly understandable emotional responses) were often cast as wrong or excessive.

So, even aside from all that, we have Dean… in the first episode, appealing to Sam to help him find their missing father. Sam is the skeptic while Dean is the emotional appeal. Unfortunately, many people tend to eat those emotional appeals right up.

So while it’s canon that John preeeeeetty much disowned Sam for wanting to go to college and it’s also canon that Sam always felt impure (8.21) and spent a lot of time alone and out of the loop and wondering if his father and brother were dead (11.19)… People listen to Dean’s words to Sam in 1.11 and take them at face value.

Dean’s words, just in case anyone needs a refresher: You’re a selfish bastard, you know that? You just do whatever you want. Don’t care what anybody thinks. (But people don’t remember the conversation they both had later… or any of the “after-conversations” when Dean has cooled down from his emotional high and recognizes and verbally acknowledges that his accusations were unfair. Admittedly, that happened more often in the early seasons… the later seasons have almost none of it, which leaves the story kinda skewed.)

Dean is a fascinating character and Jensen is a talented actor, and it’s easy for viewers to take the events of the show at face value and to not do the necessary legwork it takes to realize that, while Dean’s feelings are entirely understandable and it’s more than okay for him to feel angry and betrayed…it doesn’t make his feelings true. It feels to him like Sam betrayed him and left the family, but the facts are that the separation was only permanent because Sam was told never to come back if he left.

And that’s only one case of many.

It doesn’t help that the show often displays a narrative bias that exalts and affirms Dean’s perspective. (Dean’s response to Sam “not looking for him,” Dean’s response to Sam’s reaction to the forced Gadreel possession, Dean’s response to Sam’s visions in s11—and on and on and on it goes. Those are only examples from recent seasons, but I could cite a number of examples before and after them.)

Dean often makes assumptions based on faulty or shaky information (or simple gut instinct or bias) but the narrative supports his skepticism and condemns Sam’s faith, making Sam look at best foolish and naive and at worst selfish and unfeeling.

In short: Sam is perceived as selfish by a number of fans because it takes more effort to understand his story since, while it’s there, it’s rarely the focus, and his reasonable appeals simply don’t have the emotional weight of Dean’s impassioned speeches.

As an introvert and someone who strongly connects with Sam’s ways of expressing himself, I find Sam’s story and perspective to be extremely obvious. Through conversations with a number of fans of the show, though, I’ve come to realize that it’s not universally the case.

I don't know if you have already answered this one, but I would like to ask about outlining a series. I'm trying to write a novel series, but I don't know how to have an effective outline for it. I have seen many tutorials on outlining a novel but not a series. Any advise you could give me would be appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for asking, and thanks for following my blog <3 :)  I do try to answer every question I get in the inbox, either with my own advice or with resources from people with better knowledge.  And I probably need to create a masterpost/FAQ to help people navigate my posts in the future >.<

So I’ve only written one series (technically a trilogy) and it was not of full-length novels, but I did have an outline method that might help you.  I’m a crazy-hard planner so if it’s a bit too thorough for your tastes, you can winnow it down to what suits you:

  1. Start with the first book.  Remember, if you don’t have the first book, you don’t have any books.  Really devote time to creating complex characters, an engaging and in-depth plot, and a solid setting that complements it.  You won’t really be able to outline anything else until this is done – because no matter how well-laid your plans are, the story will turn out different by the time it’s done.  That’s mainly because you’re discovering the characters in that first story, which makes everything tentative.
  2. Once you’re about halfway through, develop the ending.  By halfway through the story, you’ve got a solid cast of characters, a defined plot, and plenty of decisions left to make.  You probably only have a vague idea of how you want the first book to end – so now is the time to stop and plan the ending.  Make sure you’ve got a satisfactory finale that leaves an opening for the next book, but brings the plot to some sort of satisfactory conclusion nonetheless.
  3. Once you’ve got the ending, define the point of your series.  Is it plot-driven or character-driven?  If it’s plot-driven, what is the final point in the plot that you wish to achieve (e.g. the Hunger Games trilogy encompassed Katniss’s enemyship with President Snow)?  If it’s character-driven, how do you want the characters to evolve by the end of the series (e.g. Friends was about six young adult friends figuring out their lives and supporting each other UNTIL they found family, stability, and new support systems)?  This definition will help you to develop everything in between.
  4. Write a loose few paragraphs on what you definitely want in the stories.  Plot twists, character developments, big scenes – put it all in there.  Brainstorm a bit until you have plenty of story fodder, and then play with the order a bit.  Group together things that complement each other or are similar in theme/timing.  If there are holes, take the flexible subplots (e.g. a romance arc) and fit them in there.  It’s basically like going to the grocery store, grabbing 50 ingredients, and then rationing them out to make 5 delicious, whole meals.  Take your ingredients and make 3+ separate, full plots.
  5. Outline each story individually (or at least the next two for now).  This will be where you do the final shifting, getting things in order and seeing if they make good stories.  Some things will fit together and make for a compelling whole project – and from my experience, I’d guess you’ll wind up with a few extra plots/subplots/plot bunnies that don’t find a home.  Do the hard thing and cut them out.  If they don’t fit in any story, and they’re not enough to make their own story, they’re just a necessary casualty.
  6. Adjust as necessary.  As you develop characters and plots, things may change.  You may find that some subplots don’t fit with the theme of a certain book.  You may wind up cutting more and bringing back stuff you previously cut out.  When in this process, make sure you don’t delete any ideas.  Ever.  Anything might make a reappearance.  A series means you have a lot of space to fill with only a basic idea, so anything could be the difference between a bunch of books and a true series.
  7. Don’t get attached to anything especially the ending.  No matter how wonderful you think your ending is, by the time you actually get there, the odds are good that it’ll change completely.  Plans are great, but they’re never followed 100%.  Don’t get so attached to certain ideas that you’ll bend the true story – the best story – into knots trying to keep your favorite ideas in there.

That’s the best I could remember from my time writing a series.  In point #5 I left a link to my outline tag, with different reblogs of outlining techniques for your individual stories.  Outlining is so different for every writer, so I figured that’d be your best bet.

I hope this helps!  This is just my method, and there are thousands of other methods out there.  If you still need help or have other questions, my inbox is always open! :]  Good luck!
