Yes, everybody I know there are no links! Tumblr updated one day and they just disappeared! Sadly, this was a great master post but that’s the end of that!

I can’t stop thinking about an AU in which Glanni and Robbie are brothers and Íþróttaálfurinn and Sportacus are brothers so I’m gonna write it all out here:

Glanni makes fun of Robbie’s “ridiculous” hair and Robbie always responds by bringing up the “Richy Rich” outfit.

No one mentions Íþróttaálfurinn’s goatee phase for fear of retaliation. Robbie made that mistake once and all of his cake mysteriously turned to carrot cake for a week and his microwave reeked of fish until he gave in and replaced it. Never again.

Ziggy is afraid of Íþróttaálfurinn and Sportacus has often responded to his crystal only to find his brother trying to take Ziggy’s candy away and limit intake to once a week.

Glanni surprisingly doesn’t cause too much trouble in LazyTown. He won’t admit it, but he’s kind of afraid of Íþróttaálfurinn. He trusts Sportacus to handle Robbie but he always keeps a sharp eye on Glanni. When he does decide on a scheme, however, it usually takes a while to fix everything he’s ruined. One time, Íþróttaálfurinn left town for a while to help out in BusyCity and Glanni managed to shroud the town in nighttime for a week. No one could figure out what time it was and ended up either oversleeping or undersleeping because all of the clocks disappeared with the sun. Robbie got tired of all of the yawning and whining and fixed it before Íþróttaálfurinn even got back. No one’s really sure how Glanni did it or how Robbie fixed it.

Íþróttaálfurinn pushes the kids a little too much sometimes and Robbie gets fed up with it and throws his arms up in the air exasperatedly. “They’re just children! You can’t expect them never to make mistakes! They’re not hurting anyone by being a little lazy every now and then!”

Sometimes Robbie and Glanni give the kids makeovers. Glanni teaches the kids how to walk in heels. There’s a fashion show at some point, Robbie vs Glanni, and Robbie uses Stephanie, Pixel, and Sportacus as his models (no one is sure how he convinced Sportacus) while Glanni uses Stingy, Trixie, and Ziggy. They both have their complications with Sportacus struggling to simply walk down the catwalk and Ziggy’s lack of restraint when it comes to sticky, messy candy, but no one is able to come up with a clear winner. Robbie and Glanni argue about the results for weeks.

Glanni tries to convince himself he doesn’t care about the residents of LazyTown but they’ve been genuinely nice to him and he grows fond of them. He particularly likes Trixie and Stingy.

Glanni makes fun of Robbie for having a huge, obvious crush on Sportacus and Robbie indignantly mutters that his thing for Íþróttaálfurinn isn’t exactly subtle, either. They both avoid their respective elves for exactly two days before the kids get frustrated and force them to talk to each other. Robbie and Sportacus seem a lot closer afterwards, often brushing shoulders and whispering together. Glanni and Íþróttaálfurinn are more obvious since Glanni is fond of pet names and isn’t shy about PDA (though nothing graphic because the town is mostly children. anything like that is behind closed doors)

Glanni switches to wearing black skinny jeans and a long sleeved sweater instead of his catsuit but he keeps the heels.

Sometimes Glanni refers to Íþróttaálfurinn as “Thing 1” and Sportacus as “Thing 2” because they look so similar.

Sportacus and Íþróttaálfurinn sometimes compete with each other to see who is the best at a particular activity. On one such occasion, they walked on their hands for almost the entire day. Neither one of them would give up.
I just have a lot of ideas about their interactions and all the shenanigans they’d get up to.

grapplebug  asked:

Just wanted to say that I appreciate you posting your thoughts on pixel art here. How do you feel about games that don't adhere to pixel grids? I'm talking about when you see pixels sliding along a screen at sub-pixel measurements in contemporary pixel games. I personally feel that sticking to a rigid pixel grid actually masks the fact that we're, ultimately, just pushing coloured squares around. Your thoughts?

i’m surprised that people are enjoying me talking out of my ass as much as they are but like, if it helps, it helps

anyway: i have a lot of problems with mixels.

the first problem is that they’re something that came around with the advent of modern pixel art but now i mean that in like an extremely literal sense, in that you literally could not do mixed pixel sizes (especially smaller mixed pixel sizes) on original hardware. pixels were already the smallest unit available and it wasnt until like the snes that people started to stretch sprites to be larger and even then it didn’t really even become mainstream until the gba

but really like this isn’t the heart of the issue. it’s almost more like a pixel purism thing but even then like, i don’t really adhere that tight to that kind of philosophy. it’s really more important that whatever you make looks good

which leads me to the second problem: mixels look like shit

or very specifically mixels look like some sort of bug; like the sprite isn’t being drawn right and the system the game is using to scale up small art is acting up or something. it’s a big inconsistency that makes you question the way the game is being conveyed to you instead of what the game is trying to convey and it’s distracting but not in a way that makes you think ‘maybe the game is trying to tell me something’ as much as it tells you ‘maybe someone fucked up’. so you’re right; sticking to a rigid grid helps the player not notice that they’re playing a video game, because the pattern that they’ve established as consistent hasn’t been broken, and they can concentrate on the task at hand

but there’s actually a weird twist to this i’ve found and it’s that you can’t make pixels smaller but you can make them bigger

as long as the baseline pixel size doesn’t change and as long as the scaling size is a round number (or you’re scaling the sprite via nearest neighbor or something) you haven’t broken the scaling ‘rules’ youve set for yourself. which is almost a technicality

it’s kindof like how lego and duplo are compatible (cause duplos are exactly twice the size of legos) but legos and megablocks arent (cause megablocks are like 0.95x or some shit) (and are horrible), basically. it’s not exactly optimal but it’ll do in a pinch, like if you just need to get the art out

just don’t mix up your baselines and you should be fine

so uh I haven’t touched this blog for a while but I wanted to describe the most terrifying experience of my fucking life that happened while playing Subnautica

few clarifications: I last played this game like, September 2016. IT HAS UPDATED SIGNIFICANTLY SINCE THEN. I also decided to play it on “creative mode” aka “invincible fun time mode” because I just wanted to ~have fun and explore the new stuff~, you know?

So, I haven’t kept up with the updates. The story bit of the game has bulked up significantly since I last played, and there’s much more direction now if you want it, which is nice; the icons are all cleaned up and such, a lot more stuff is textured, the cyclops can apparently be lit on fire, yada yada. I went ‘sploring and found a couple new faces, an electric eel type boy and a warp warp man. (Ultimate goal is to go up and scan a reaper but I am still???? too scared??? i literally cannot take any damage in this mode but the deep and ancient part of me that remembers being prey on the serengeti says DONT)

(subnautica is very good at VAGUE ANXIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL FEAR while also being very lovely to look at, and really grinds deep into the gray matter of Terror of the Deep, it’s very very good and I hatelove it)

anyway I started taking screenshots of the koosh zone while exploring/picking up samples for my soon-to-be-ultimate-creature-zoo, because this game can be very pretty

anyway after digging around a bit i discovered a TRENCH. i did not screenshot the trench because i did not realize i was about to have to fight for my very existence on this good earth.

did i enter the trench? of course I entered the fucking trench. there’s no crush damage in this mode and the game told me there was some sort of Big Energy Signature nearby. Down I went.

….and went. For 6000 meters. NOTHING. Except a kind of shelf at one point that I went and got under. (this minor detail is going to be crucial)

anyway at 6km i decided fuck it, i’ve held down on the s key for like 5 minutes, if i’m gonna plumb these depths i need to come back with my big boy sub. so i went back up. got to 3000 meters.

hey remember that little shelf i went under well turns out it was a ROCK CEILING 3000 METERS DEEP and i had gotten so turned around in the plumbing process that I couldnt fucking find the way out, it was all barren rock ceiling, no way back up even when i searched around and around and probably criscrossed my own path trying to map out featureless rock, i was boned as heck

OR…. WAS I….

said my own thoughts, because i happened to have in my possession a TERRAFORMER and as all good subnautica boys and girls know that thing can dig big ol holes in rock.

so… trapped 3000 meters below solid rock… i did what any sensible extrastellar refugee would do and decided to TUNNEL MY WAY BACK UP

leaving my trusty seamoth behind, i began to tunnel…. about 2000 meters through solid rock, in complete blackness, clicking frantically in the darkness, probably crying

(listen, i had some good eggs and scans in my inventory and i didn’t want to LOSE them by resetting, you gotta understand)

about 1km from the surface, i finally encounter open water!! i’ve done it!! i thought, foolishly, to myself. i brought out my seaglide and began to zoom up only to find

1. this was not open water

2. this was a cave

3. this was a giant cave filled with lava

4. subnautica has LAVA CAVES NOW???

5. the game was perhaps not totally sure about my method of getting INTO said lava cave, and didn’t seem prepared with some of the textures

by the way, IN ADDITION TO IT BEING A GIANT LAVA CAVE, there were like… structures down there?? which again I was not prepared for because I have not played this game in like 6 months?? but the textures wouldn’t load?? so I just got these really scary ominous unknown pieces of architecture that i was in no way prepared for and had no idea how they were supposed to look?? and everything was red?????

also because the textures weren’t loaded it was extremely difficult to tell what you could pass through and what you couldn’t, so i was basically ping ponging through invisible walls and wanting to cry because i tunneled 2000 meters thru solid rock and i was gonna die in badly rendered hell anyway

did i mention also, the noises

did i mention that there were a lot of VERY DISTRESSING SOUND EFFECTS IN THIS CAVE

and then, through the invisible walls, i saw the friend who was making them!!!

it’s hard to tell from this screenshot but that is a VERY. LARGE. BOY. TOO LARGE.

at this point ya boy koryos was basically like ready 2 ascend from this mortal plane. what is going on. WHAT AM I LOOKING AT. VERY DISTRESSED. ALSO WHATS THT THING IN THE CORNER

ok so i stopped trying to penetrate the invisible walls eventually and tried to burrow my way out again except APPARENTLY you cant burrow through LAVA which was STUPID anyway i was still very trapped

but i explored a bit and found……. this??

insert fuel crystal???

this mystery device bore all the hallmark of a Lazy Concept Sci Fi Warp Gate which was exciting to me because by god i was ready to be anywhere but there, in hell. but i didnt have a “fuel crystal” and it definitely wasn’t part of the game back in the center. But no problem!! This is creative mode!! I can just build a base down in hell!! A hell base!! Where I can craft anything I want!!!

so i made a base and a fabricator but uhhhhhhhhhhh there was no “fuel crystal” on the item list. so at this point it had been like an hour of desperate sweaty anxiety and i was like fuck it, i’ll console command it in, i just need…… freedom…… (without losing any of those good good scans)

anyway i looked it up and got the ~oddly pixelated crystal~, which powered up the warp

please… just take me somewhere that’s not red… that’s all i ask……

anyway i believe i accidentally stumbled on some plot because i found a “control room” set to deactivate the “weapon” but a tentacle boy didn’t want to “deactivate” it because i was “““infected”““

mind you im still fucking… 69 m under the water…. 69 huh? i just noticed that in the screenshot nice

anyway to make a long story short after getting lost about ten more times i FINALLY found an exit to the neon labyrinth and nearly cried when i saw my bud warp warp man outside

now that i was outside i could finally appreciate the fact that this shit was dope as hell, look at how cool that is, I LOVE MYSTICAL RUINS AND SHIT LIKE THIS

also it was connected to an island???? i thought subnautica was all about not having land???? anyway let’s just drop a beacon for later i need to get back to my fucking base and lie down to contemplate the ether for 6 hours

and so i survived the incident in which i was never in any actual peril, both in a real and virtual sense, but was still very distraught and very sweaty about, 10/10 would recommend subnautica to a friend

anyway i went on tumblr to soothe myself afterwards which was a MISTAKE because the monteray bay aquarium reminded me that there is no escape from the eldritch horrors of the ocean

anonymous asked:

To be honest I don't know anything about making a game, despite the fact that someday I really want to make one myself. Where do you go to buy game creating programs like RPGmaker or something like such? What are the best websites or programs to download while making a game? (This might be a stupid question lol) Is there game makers you can download to make a 3d platform?

Some of this is covered in my FAQ buddy if you haven’t read it yet!  No worries, I’m pretty sure you can’t see it on mobile, so I’ll just answer you here. c:

Where do you go to buy game creating programs like RPGmaker or something like such?

From the Official Site, Steam, or Humble Bundle (which gives you a steam key).  Steam has a general category of game development software you can check out as well.

What are the best websites or programs to download while making a game?

For RPG Maker in particular:

  • - one of the oldest communities on the web.  Full of nerds & tutorials that can answer all your questions you have.
  • Any RPG maker forum or site to be honest
  • Game Character Hub if you’re interested in XP, VX, or VX Ace and don’t sprite that well
  • The manual that comes with the editor
  • Google.  What?  Have a problem, type it in!

If I’m spriting, I’ll have Pinterest open as well for reference pictures (that’s how I roll).

General Programs:

  • Music Editors - here’s a list of Free to Use ones if you don’t have money or are cheap like me.  If you don’t feel like learning how to make music or need some sound effects, check out my music tag for some sweet free sounds to use for your projects!
  • Image Editor/Art Programs - Photoshop, Clip Studio,, all good things to have open, especially if you’re making parallax maps (maps that are one big background image rather than made up of small tiles).  Free ones include, Krita, Gravit Designer, Fire Alpaca, Medibang Paint, and Gimp (if you hate yourself).  If you don’t want to or can’t make your own graphics, check out these groovy free to use graphics here.
  • Pixel Art Programs - If you like having your pixel art separate from your regular art program/image editor, get yourself a pixel art program to work with.  Aesprite & Graphics Gale are popular choices, but there’s many tools that specialize in pixel art you can grab.

Is there game makers you can download to make a 3d platform?

Yes, here’s some of them!

(This might be a stupid question lol)

This blog was built to accommodate first time questions my dude.  There’s really no stupid questions when you’re starting out making games - you just don’t know :0   The only stupid questions we have are shitpost.  :p

Hey, can I just ask how you get the lineless style when coloring your art? I mean, I don't really understand how you color your stuff in the first place... I'm trying so hard but I'm just having a rough one making it work so I'm asking around a little to see if I can figure it out. :/

I’m totally gonna go overboard with this but ohwelllll<3
I made this tutorial a while ago and I realize now that it’s not very clear about some things, so let’s try this again!

Start with line-art! I draw it in red because I won’t be using that colour anywhere else on the drawing, so I’ll be really easy to see throughout the whole process.

If you’re starting from a scanned picture, open up another layer above it and draw your lines again on that, so you have a layer that’s just nice clean lines. After I’m done I double the layer, just so the lines are easier to work with. (right click on the layer, hit ‘duplicate layer’, then rightclick again and hit ‘merge down’)

I usually make sure the details (lines are are going to be inside and coloured differently, like the ones coloured black here) are at least twice as thick as the others.

Then, lock your layer! That makes sure you don’t end up drawing anything more/erasing things, and you’ll need to have it locked after you colour, so why not!

Now, time for colour! Make a new layer underneath your lines, and have at it! I usually colour a few things on each layer, but make sure it’s bits that don’t touch. That way I don’t have to worry about overlapping or going outside the lines as much.

For things that are going to be white, like his shirt and teeth, I do them in another colour, then lock the layer and go over it with white. When the layer is locked, nothing on it can be erased and nothing can be added, so all you’re doing is changing the colour. That’s the secret for colouring the lines and making them ~disappear~, but we’ll get to that in a bit!

Don’t be afraid to use as many layers as you need to, they’re your best friends when it comes to colouring. When you’re done your colours, it’s time for the magic to happen!

Go back up to your lines layer and, while it’s still locked, start going over you lines to correspond with the rest of your colouring! Once you start with one colour it should start to make sense, don’t worry.

If it helps, this is what your lines layer looks like without the colour layers, just for more clarification.

Once you’re done all your lines, there’s probably going to be a few pixels that are the wrong colour, because colouring isn’t an exact science and you’re bound to go out of the lines in a few spots

For those, I make another layer above my lines and just cover ‘em up with my brush tool, easy peasy.

And that’s pretty much it!

Then you can add whatever background you want on a layer underneath it all, and you’re all set!

If you have any questions or if anything is horribly unclear, don’t be afraid to ask! Otherwise, I hope this helps! :D

Hello fandom guru! With the recent news that Tumblr has failed to meet Yahoo's expectations and has just been devalued by nearly $250million, should fandom be worried? The WSJ article on it has Yahoo stating about there are gonna be changes to try to make it profitable. Is it possible it means making it less fandom friendly, since fandom and business profits don't usually go well? Having gone through the LJ and delicious drama, I'm nervous. Should I be?

(The news in question, which you should all be aware of: Yahoo Writes Down the Value of Tumblr by $230 million)

Hi, anon! I was gonna make a post about this anyway, so I appreciate the question! But even more, I appreciate you thinking about these issues, because as a culture, we need to be thinking about these issues, as you well know. My answer basically falls along two lines of thought, so here they are.

1. Owning what we build

I keep thinking about this idea of ownership and profit in terms of fandom creating its own infrastructure. To me, fandom as a whole has suffered a bit because we’re currently relying largely on for-profit structures with WYSIWYG interfaces to build our communities. (I say as I type this directly into Tumblr’s wysiwyg interface.) I’m not saying that we should return to the dark ages of mailing lists and internet forums, but I think culturally and communally we lose something by not having to go in and physically build the spaces we inhabit. We’re looking at a generation of fans who have mostly grown up on Tumblr and Wattpad and expect these pre-made hosting spaces to just kind of be here forever—and to be cool about hosting fanworks and fan communities.

Whereas those of us who’ve been around forever know from experience that listservs can vanish overnight, web hosts and server owners can kick you off and delete your website, corporations can and will attempt to delete your communities because they think you write and draw illegal material, businesses can fold and collapse and leave you with years of fandom infrastructure completely demolished.

I think that it’s dangerous to be fully disconnected from the backend, from the code. The main reason I even learned more than basic code way back when is that LJ’s early codebase sucked and was tinkerable with, and you couldn’t really participate effectively in the community unless you also learned how to physically build the community, whether it was by creating your own LJ style, making your own icons or theme, making your own LJ comms, or whatever. Like, I learned how to use Photoshop because I had to use it to make perfectly square 100x100 icons with a 1 pixel border. And I learned the value of tagging and curating because Delicious allowed us to basically build an entire fandom community around self-curated fic recs. And then there’s the AO3, which has essentially been hand-coded from the ground up by female-dominated fandom out of the principle that we need to own the damn servers because owning them ourselves is the only way to guarantee longevity.

That can’t be said enough: owning and yes, even building, our own community spaces is the only way to guarantee longevity. If anyone who actually lived through Strikethrough and Boldthrough and LJ in general, much less the nightmare of Delicious shutting down, actually came to Tumblr with the idea that it would be our shiny new forever fandom home, I would be very surprised. But we’ve all been really content to just be here without seriously looking for alternatives and backups. And meanwhile, ask any Tumblr user under, idk, 16 or so, what the next fandom blogging and discussion platform will be after Tumblr, and I’m not sure they’d have any more of an answer than I do.

2. Valuing female-dominated fandom spaces

It’s not like Reddit hasn’t been going through this same question of how to monetize its huge userbase, but the huge difference is that Reddit essentially already owns itself. Its community members chip in to help it keep running both infrastructure-wise and financially. Its male-dominated spaces are vastly more likely to have adults who want to hop in and get their hands dirty keeping the ship running, rather than jumping ship to go somewhere else. There were plenty of doomsday predictions about Reddit last year that came to nothing because at the end of the day, the community a) is willing to fight for its survival and b) has a major stake in the direction of the website by virtue of having built the Reddit community on a model of volunteerism, hand in hand with its management.

Tumblr’s userbase, on the other hand, essentially joined a ready-made platform that was already operating under a start-up model. The goal of Tumblr has always been to be a profitable business, so instead of viewing its users as the reason it exists, Tumblr sees its userbase as a byproduct of its existence. And I think we see that reflected in the lack of respect Tumblr users get (especially compared to Reddit’s users, who are typically revered in new media as some kind of pinnacle community of the Internet). Even though Tumblr’s userbase is the wealthiest demographic of any social media platform, it’s been repeatedly derided by industry experts as a site for tweens and dumb memes and not a source of revenue potential. In part, Tumblr’s business problems are due to the social devaluation of female-dominated communities and activities—which is literally translating to an economic devaluation.

But half the problem, IMO, is that the businesses who understand Tumblr culture are smart enough to know that they can successfully engage Tumblr users without spending a bunch of money because the whole site is free, and the things Tumblr users value about the site are things smart and savvy businesses & people (like Mic, Dennys, Buzzfeed, Grimes, etc) can tap into without spending any ad dollars. Whereas the advertisers who spend a lot of money trying to reach Tumblr through traditional banner ads are out of touch and don’t seem to have a clue what Tumblr users value. And why should they? Outside of Tumblr, things like an amazing reblog chain or gorgeous fanart or discussions about diversity aren’t seen as cultural capital. As a community and a culture, we can’t expect our work to be viewed as “profitable” work.

The takeaway:

For me, the takeaway is that if we want to maintain social media communities around fandom in the future, we either have to figure out ways to build our own communities ourselves, or ways to talk about fandom that increases the visibility of fandom culture and increases respect for it among the mainstream, so that investors of potential social media platforms realize the value of what they’re investing in. This is something that so far Wattpad has been able to do really well, so it’s definitely something that’s possible. But Wattpad also evolved its business policies by building its services around its userbase, which Tumblr has never really done.

Does that make sense? Sorry for the long reply, but obviously this is kind of a big deal. :)

The lime green Game Boy Color clunks to the floor, narrowly missing Grantaire’s foot, and he blinks. Huh. He hadn’t expected to find that in the bread bin. He’s not even sure why he has a bread bin.

Then again, he’s moved house several times in the last few years, and this is the first place big enough that he’s actually unpacking the boxes he’d packed up, instead of stuffing them under the bed, so his memory is rather hazy as to what is stored where.

I don't want to tell anything that doesn't have to do with the blog exactly, but I am making a pixel adventure game and I need some help. The concept and characters are mostly sorted out, but do you now any tips on how to animate/make pixel art? And is it possible you have suggestions on game mechanics for retro-games? Sorry if you don't want to hear this. Thank you for your patience, Have a wonderful day!

Making graphics for your games

How to make pixel art is a very broad question. If you’re starting from zero and you want to do it/learn yourself, it’ll take time. If that’s your desire, I made this getting started prototype. It’s a rough version of what you’ll find at early stages of my game Pixel Art Academy and can give you a foot in the door.

From there on, a great link to other tutorials is @pixelartus‘ guide over here.

But you might not really want to go down that way necessarily, if your goal is just to make a game (I assume you’re also coding it?). You have a couple of options:

1. Use ‘programer art’ as long as possible, meaning mockup graphics you throw together in 5 minutes. I use this a lot:

You can make a lot of gameplay that way. When you know your game is onto something great (in playable form), it will be easier to convince an artist to work on it.

Here is an example from one of my undergrad students. After he was done with his project, I called a friend (Blodyavenger) to consider doing art for him before the game went up to the App Store.

As you can see, he did a great job and took the game to the next level. He did it as a pay it forward kind of thing. And sure enough, when Blodyavenger needed some character art, I helped him out in return.

As you can see, humble beginnings can bring you far.

2. Instead of crappy or geometric placeholders you can use free resources. @pixelprospector (who is behind the wonderful Pixelartus mentioned above) has cataloged some of the resources for you. Check them out.

In addition to free ones, you can always find indie artists who sell packs of items for you to use. It’s not a big expense (around $10) and you’re helping a fellow developer out too. Here’s for example Blodyavenger’s stuff.

Another artist I recently started following and supporting on Patreon is David Masia a.k.a. @kronbits. Here’s his page of resources, some free, some around $5. Again, a nice guy to support. Examples of his work:

These can give your games a nice polished look, but you’ll probably soon run into situations where you won’t find just the right asset you’re looking for. So you’ll have to mix it with mockups and coder art eventually.

Retro game mechanics

This is a tougher one for me to answer, despite my nickname. I’m personally fan of going for unseen gameplay mechanics; for starting at zero assumptions and building up from your theme/what you want to say (see my thoughts on this).

It might not be true objectively, but that’s the spirit I (nostalgically) attribute to 80s when everything was new territory to explore. In reality, at least on home computers, there was a lot of copying gameplay from arcades as that was the holy grail at the time. But then again, that just means the arcades were the one innovating. So I personally like to keep to that ideal, design from zero, at least for core gameplay. But on the other hand I can’t resist to make a text adventure in the 21st century because I freeking love the aesthetic and idea (you can type anything?!?).

Advice would be to go and play old games. Load up MAME and go at it. I would particularly suggest to pick something you remember enjoying most. Then ask yourself, why is that, what makes them tick. Wolfire has a great series of videos that give you a good example of how to dissect a game for its gameplay element.

(I just realized that in some sense, the games he goes over are retro—Gish is 12 years old by now.)

Use your analytical skills to understand the various components: goals, controls, risk/reward … But most of all, make something that fires your passion. Retrogaming is all about returning to the emotions we felt at the time. Playing new games that have the retro spirit plays on the same note, but gives it freshness.

Not sure if this second question was also meant to be specific to adventure games, but if it was, here are two of my suggestions of great adventure games to look into (maybe read reviews on them or watch some let’s plays):

Redhawk / Kwah! (ZX Spectrum)

Quite ahead of its time, it had an innovative way to present the action by mimicking comic book panels, a great connection since the game was about a superhero. Radically different presentation styles is something we don’t experiment so much with these days.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

My all time favorite adventure game that is pure gold all-throughout, but what I admire the most is that it had 3 pretty different ways to play through the storyline. Talk about replayability. I felt the game was pretty logical, no super insane item combinations. It held true to Indiana Jones character, focused on that and reaped benefits. So picking a strong narrative is what I’d get out of this one.

Before this gets too long, since I don’t know exactly what direction would help you most, I will leave you with this video by the awesome RetroAhoy. He has one of the best documentary styles on YouTube (to my knowledge) and his video on the history of games goes over the iconic titles that all introduce some sort of mechanic or trait that made them stand out. See if it inspires you or directs your search. Good luck!

Hey look, a bunch of little pixel Gladers! (Plus Brenda, because I absolutely love her UvU)
I REALLY loved “The Maze Runner” trilogy, and seeing the movie made me want to do artsy thing for it (plus I promised awkwardteaparty I’d finish these like a week ago).

TAKE NOTE: Most of these are straight from the movie, and all of them have the same clothes as the characters from the movie, but some have headcannon hair styles. Examples would be Newt and Gally, so please keep that in mind before you say something about it, thank you.

Ok, so from left to right, we have Thomas, Minho, Newt, Aldy, Gally, Ben, Jeff, Winston, Chuck, Zart, Frypan, Teresa, and Brenda.

Feel free to use these for your blog, but I do ask that you keep my signature on them or at least credit me, I worked really hard on these you guys.

Also, here’s a few ships that I absolutely love, I’ll put them under the cut.

Hi! I love your blog!! I have a question... I came across the post where you were talking about the panel where Erwin opens up to Levi about everything, and I mean, I'm new to the SNK fandom on Tumblr, so I don't really know where everyone else is, so I'm sorry for bothering you, but my question is, how is Levi going to help Erwin? I mean, Levi can kick some major ass and that could get them to the basement. Is that what you mean? Helping him find those answers is what will help him?

Oh please! This is not a bother at all! In fact, I should be thanking you for allowing me to use this 540 pixel wide platform to gush about something I feel very strongly about.

I believe you’re referring to this post where I make some conjecture about the series of panels that includes this:

I’m in the minority here, but it made me feel hopeful. We know Erwin has been carrying massive amounts of guilt on his shoulders. He feels responsible for the deaths of hundreds of soldiers and thinks he’s been lying to his friends about his motivations and objectives. When he reflected on that, it was Levi’s face he saw.

So here is Erwin opening up to Levi about some of this. Just think -  this is Erwin’s deep dark secret. This is what keeps him lying awake at night. And if he’s sharing even a fraction of this with Levi, if he’s coming clean about even a portion of it, it’s a wonderful thing. Talking about our problems with a friend is often the first step in healing.

What’s more, for all this fandom talks about Levi being awkward and terrible at conversation, he’s actually quite talented. Levi has been known to give one hell of a pep talk. And at this moment, Erwin could use one. That’s the sort of help Erwin needs. That’s the sort of help Levi can provide.

Levi has dealt brilliantly with Hange, Armin and Jean when they had personal crisis. He’s also amazing at quickly and accurately reading situations (Dimo Reeves for instance). Levi and Erwin have been friends for more than five years. There is no way Levi is unaware that Erwin is struggling emotionally with something. There’s no way Levi won’t do everything he can to help.

So yes, I’m happy about this. Like I said, it’s all conjecture at this point, but I’m hoping when the raws drop and we see what comes next, Erwin is getting the encouragement he needs to move forward.
