Forgive me, Romione shippers, for I have sinned...
I love Romione’s kiss in the last book, but I don’t actually like the kiss scene between Ron and Hermione in the Deathly Hallows Part 2 film.
What I liked about the kiss in the book is that Hermione kissed Ron because he had finally come round to the idea that house-elves should not be treated as servants. Ron had matured so much that Hermione’s feelings for him couldn’t contain themselves any more. Also, they were in the middle of a battle, and nerves were running high. They thought they could die at any minute, and didn’t want to hold off being with each-other any longer.
In the film, they kiss because they both got soaked by the spirit within Hufflepuffs cup, and they suddenly decided to kiss. Granted, they did show a lot of scenes before this where Ron was more like his book counterpart than the movie version that Rupert Grint wasn’t allowed to flesh out, but I wanted Ron to be like this throughout the series, not just in the last few films. The kiss comes across as awkward (which, if you look at the behind-the-scenes anecdotes, it so was) and slightly uncomfortable.
I’m no expert—I’m hearing and my understanding of American Sign Language is extremely limited—so please feel free to correct/add on to this! But I was just really struck by (and loved!) Elisa’s “F U” to Strickland in the above scene, which was featured at the end of the newly-released Red Band trailer for The Shape of Water.
Here, Elisa is literally signing “F” and “U” from the ASL alphabet, but what makes this so striking is that, by doing so, she’s not exactly speaking ASL—she’s fingerspelling English.
ASL is a completely separate language from spoken/written English, and fingerspelling is pretty much only used if there are no ASL equivalents for what needs to be conveyed, such as in the case of names. (In fact, when I was learning ASL, my teacher waited a while before teaching us the alphabet because she didn’t want us fingerspelling English instead of actually trying to sign!)
So the fact that Elisa uses fingerspelling here, when there are other ways in ASL to convey the idea of “fuck you,” says a lot. It says even more when you consider how she’s fingerspelling, since her fingerspelling here is not how a deaf person/someone who speaks ASL would typically fingerspell.
‘Cause fingerspelling? It’s fast. Extremely fast. Each letter flows smoothly into the next. When you fingerspell, it should be an incredibly fluid motion.
But here? That’s 110% not the case. Elisa is slow and measured. She holds out each letter nice and long. It’s the kinda way you’d fingerspell to someone learning ASL—and actually, my teacher would say to not even do that. If you slow down so much for them all the time, they’ll never be able to keep up with real ASL!
So, this scene? This scene with Elisa fingerspelling something that doesn’t need to be fingerspelled, in an incredible, deliberate, slower-than-college-WiFi pace? Well, Elisa is doing more than just dissing Strickland—she’s absolutely taunting him. She’s saying, “I’m speaking your language. I dare you to understand me.”
And she knows that he won’t. She’s speaking crystal clearly, no stuttering, no hesitance, no nothing, and Strickland can’t even be damned to attempt the basicASL alphabet because he would never, ever try to understand anything different from him.
And Elisa knows this and completely, totally rubs it in his bigoted face.
while i AM excited for all the cool and interesting interactions with various characters that we will be getting in the adaptation, i really don’t think anything will be able to top this scene being made into physical fruition:
“Ah, sorry, I’m not much of a dancer.” Prompto mumbled to his feet after he once again stepped on the prince of Lucis’ toes. “Could have fooled me,” Noctis smiled warmly, pulling Prompto closer, “Do they not have balls in Niflheim?” Prompto paused, his face falling slightly as he lowered his gaze to the floor “Well…ah, no. Not really.”
Insomnia welcomes Niflheim into their kingdom will a ball, and although Noctis usually hates any kind of social event, surprisingly this one has become a little more interesting. Another scene I had in mind for my Niflheim prince Prompto AU. I’m planning on drawing a few more things because I’ve received so much encouragement, I hope y’all like angst, cause thats where this AU is headed.
I’m gonna assume, based on all the tweets flooding my tl, that Thomas just hit 2M on YT. It’s cool to see and actually kinda surreal. Cause seeing him climb his way to the top with Vine and now him branching out to YouTube?? It’s just..so crazy to see how far he’s come. Like. Seriously. You guys. From finding him on Vine with 20k to seeing him hit million after million and now 2M on YouTube? It’s just so..wow! And I know Thomas isn’t a numbers guy, which is one of the things I really love about him, but seeing him at this point after all these years just makes my heart swell. And like. All the people he’s helped and inspired in some way shape or form and seeing all of them do the same for each other?? It’s just a beautiful thing. Seriously. I love it and this community so much! And I hope people see that this fandom is a direct reflection of the kind of person Thomas is! I’m rambling. But I just gotta say how super proud I am and how much I love my handsome, talented gay friend! 🌈💜🏳️🌈
And I think we all know that Thomas wouldn’t be where he is now without the help from all of his equally, if not more so, talented friends helping him out with all of his videos!! Every single one of them deserve the same amount of love and recognition as Thomas! They’re all amazing and incredible people! 💕
